Let's Talk About PingXie: Part 5
A Summary of Common Misconceptions in the Original Work of Daomu Biji
Source: MuzzledIdealist
Please note that this is a repost with an edited MTL. The original text is written by MuzzledIdealist on Weibo. They said it's okay to repost as long as the source is indicated.
It's not entirely about PingXie though, but the original writer put "PingXie" tag for some reason, so I just follow along.
This post is about some misconceptions in Daomu Biji fandom and whether they're canon or not. Daomu Biji is an old and long series, its story has yet to be completed, there are also many theories that are written by the fans, and those may confuse the people who just joined the fandom. So, this post will explain the following topics:
The timeline of Three Days of Silence.
Zhang Qiling was imprisoned in a sanatorium by Zhang Qishan for 20 years.
Wu Xie and Xie Yuchen were childhood sweethearts, and whether Xie Yuchen said he would marry Wu Xie when he was a child (and vice versa).
Wu Xie owes Xie Yuchen 30 billion and whether the debt has been paid off.
Whether Zhang Qiling ever studied abroad with Hei Xiazi in Germany.
Whether there is something like "wake up and go home" between Li Cu and Wu Xie.
Part 1
Someone asked me when the Three Days of Silence happened, which brought back painful memories of my previous attempts to sort out the timeline related to brother and sister-in-law (PingXie)... I still remember that I spent several nights writing a few pages of word documents, but in the end I found that this is fruitless...
Xu Lei has dug so many holes that he can’t even remember what he has written. There are still many discrepancies between his online serialized version and the physical book version. The most obvious thing is that the front part of the earliest serialized version of Tibetan Sea Flower is very different from the physical book.
According to the (online) serialized version, the first time he (Xiaoge) entered Medog (Motuo) to meet Deren was probably in the late 1970s, and the second time he went to Medog to investigate Dong Can’s whereabouts was probably in the late 1980s. However, in the physical book it was changed to the late 1940s when the first time he (Xiaoge) went to Medog to see Deren, and the second time he went to see Dong Can was in the late 1950s. In the (online) serialized version, Chen Xuehan met a man [they used “哥” here, since Xiaoge is often just called "哥" too, I'm not sure who are they referring to, a man named "Zaji" or Xiaoge] in Jila Temple, but this plot was deleted in the physical version, and even the important character "Zaji" was deleted [see more in Tibetan Sea Flower Ch. 4 (MereBear's Translation)]. Judging from the expression of the two versions, the physical book may have deleted some things, resulting in part of the narrative not being as readable as the (online) serialized version. Looking at the timeline, the time in the (online) serialized version is more consistent with the timeline in the follow-up Unknown Story: Queen of the West’s Ghost Banquet, which states: "(Xiao)ge went to Medog in the late 1970s and left Medog just a few days after Wu Xie was born." [See more in Unknown Story: Queen of the West’s Ghost Banquet Part 2 | Part 3 (MereBear's Translation)]
Therefore, if we speculate according to the (online) serialized version, Three Days of Silence happened in the late 1970s (Zhang Qiling entered Medog for the first time and met Lama Deren, and Wu Xie was born in the same year that Zhang Qiling left Medog). If we speculate according to the physical version, Three Days of Silence happened in the late 1940s (Zhang Qiling entered Medog for the first time and met Lama Deren).
Looking at the timeline of the original story, it's even more confusing. The archaeological team was switched, Xie Jiu(ye)'s plan happened to be destroyed by Panma and others. The plots of the two archaeological expeditions at the Zhang Family's Ancient Building and the two groups of people in Xisha and Heavenly Palace on the Clouds are somewhat confusing. In addition, the key nodes of the timeline involve three versions of narratives by Zhang Qiling, Wu Sanxing, and Chen Wenjin, plus Wu Xie’s speculation in the summary chapter, which makes the timeline even more messy. Even if the physical book comes with a timeline of major events, the description is unclear.
Also, "it", the core that controls everything, involved some unspeakable things in the original serialized version (don't ask about this). In order to avoid this problem in subsequent publications, XL added some random things to Zhang Qishan, which caused great contradictions and divisions in the character and positioning of Zhang Qishan.
As soon as the operation is completed, the imagination and rumors come... Regarding the statement that "Zhang Qiling was imprisoned in a sanatorium by Zhang Qishan for 20 years", I have seen it many times, but the fact is that (Xiao)ge was seriously injured and lost his memory in the largest grave robbery in history in 1965. However, after this incident, a group of people headed by Wu Laogou and Huo Xiangu have been supporting and protecting him. The book states that (Xiao)ge entered a sanatorium at some point later, and was indeed transferred out of the sanatorium in 1985. But the book never mentioned who Zhang Qishan imprisoned, nor did it mention the specific time when he (Xiaoge) entered the sanatorium, but what is certain is that he still appeared in Medog in 1977, so "Zhang Qishan imprisoned people" and "20 years" are both pure imagination......
Part 2
Then there are many other rumors. Here are some common ones and clarifications.
1. Are Wu Xie and Xie Yuchen childhood sweethearts?
False. Wu Xie lived in Hangzhou most of the time when he was a child. Only during the Chinese New Year would he go back to his hometown in Changsha with adults to pay New Year greetings. Only then would he have the opportunity to play with children such as Xie Yuchen and Huo Xiuxiu, who are also juniors. Wu Xie went back to his hometown no more than five times, so he met these juniors no more than five times in total.
“When I was a child, I paid New Year's greetings. I remember that we kids often played together, but Wu Xie, you are not so gregarious, you are introverted, and you are from out of town, so you may not be familiar with me, so you don't remember me.” —Xie Yuchen’s original words in the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 26 (Chinese Version)]
“We came to our ancestral village not to reminisce about the past and celebrate the New Year. In fact, from the time I was born to now, I have never returned to my hometown more than once.” —Wu Xie's narration in the New Year chapter that follows the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Extra Chinese New Year Special : Ch. 1.1 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 1 (Chinese Version)
2. When Xie Yuchen was a child, he said he wanted to marry Wu Xie? (And vice versa)
False. It was Huo Xiuxiu who said she wanted to marry Wu Xie, and at that time they were just children under 10 years old, it's a kid's joke.
"Yes, you even forgot about me.” Huo Xiuxiu said from the side, “You can’t even tell who’s real and who’s fake. You’re worse than this Fatty. It’s so upsetting. I even wanted to marry you when I was a child.” —Huo Xiuxiu's original words in the main story. [See more in Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation) | Ch. 26 (Chinese Version)]
Part 3
3. Wu Xie owes Xie Yuchen 30 billion?
False. The fact is that Iron Triangle made a big fuss at the Crescent Hotel and robbed the Ghost Seal. The reason why they were not held accountable was because Mrs. Huo came forward and asked the Huo family to guarantee them. The reason why the Huo family was willing to provide a guarantee was because they wanted Iron Triangle to join in the operation to capture the Lama. So Wu Xie did owe money, but what he owed was the money from the Crescent Hotel's auction of the Ghost Seal, and this debt was guaranteed by the Huo family. Later, people from the Crescent Hotel came to collect the debt, so they asked Xie Yuchen to find Wu Xie and the others to ask for money.
“This son and I are going grave robbing soon.” Granny Huo patted the pattern and said, “I need your help. If you promise, I’ll make sure you don’t have to worry about Crescent Hotel. And there are other big benefits.” —Daomu Biji Vol. 7 Ch. 31 (MereBear's Translation)
“If I leave Beijing, our two families may fight and give a third party a chance. Beijing’s circle is so chaotic that when you made a scene before, Liuli Sun looked to us for an explanation. And the people at the Crescent Hotel are even more troublesome.” Xiao Hua said. “Your asses haven’t been wiped clean. When the Huos are in turmoil, the debts must be repaid together.” —Daomu Biji Vol. 8 Ch. 4 (MereBear's Translation)
「Xiao Hua looked at our feet and then at our walls. Fatty had put up some hanging paintings, but I didn’t know where he had found them. “Actually, people from Crescent Hotel came to ask me to pass on a message to you,” he said.
I looked at Fatty—I hadn’t heard that name for a long time—and said, “You can tell them that I haven’t been in the business recently. They don’t need to be concerned with me.”
“They’re here to collect the debt,” Xiao Hua said. “Do you still remember that you took something from Crescent Hotel without paying? I was your guarantor at that time and now I’ve come to collect.”」
—Daomu Biji Extra: Some of Wu Xie’s Thoughts (MereBear's Translation)
By the way, where did the 30 billion come from:
30 billion is not cash or an exact number, but the valuation of antiques stored in banks around the world by the Xie family. To put forward these antiques, we need a "special one" that can change the graphics according to the time accurately to the second, and correspond to the corresponding database system of those banks. The seal that “cannot be copied” was once hung around Huo Xiuxiu’s neck in Sand Sea, but was later torn off and thrown into the sewer. "As the water washes away, the seal is poured into the depths of the sewer. After 3 months, when the power of the backup battery is exhausted, the seal will stop changing. The wealth valued at nearly 30 billion will become dead and sealed forever in the bank". In short, this 30 billion has nothing to do with Wu Xie's debt.
4. Wu Xie owes this money and has not paid it back?
False. It had been paid off long ago, and Xiao Hua even mistakenly thought that the things that Fatty put in Wu Xie's house to pay the bills were Wu Xie's property and moved them away, so Wu Xie was so poor during Restart period...
「I thought Fatty had some more valuable things, but he said that all of the good things had been moved to Rain Village. On that stormy night, all those things had been regarded as mine and Xiao Hua took them away to settle the accounts (1). Fatty seemed to have a lifetime of bad luck just for knowing me. He went from getting accidental injuries to losing his whole fortune.
I sighed, pinched my brows, and realized that I had to make some money.」
—Restart Ch. 126 (MereBear's Translation)
Later, Xu Lei also replied in the WeChat comment area that the money owed by Wu Xie had been paid off:
「Selected comment: Wu Xie still owes Xiao Hua the Ghost Seal money and hasn’t paid it back yet. How dare he borrow it again?
Xu Lei: It’s done.」
An additional point here is that the Huo family should use their own family credit as a guarantee for the Iron Triangle, and the amount of debt is huge. The Huo family should provide personal insurance rather than property insurance. PICC (People's Insurance Company of China) is divided into general guarantee and joint liability guarantee. Usually fools will choose general guarantee, let alone a smart person like Mrs. Huo, because under this guarantee method, the guarantor enjoys the right of first-suit defense. In layman's terms, the creditor must first apply to enforce the debtor's own property. Only when the debtor runs away and has no money or his own property is not enough to pay off the entire debt, can the creditor require the guarantor to assume the guarantee liability. This means that Crescent Hotel can only ask Wu Xie to pay back the money first. Unless Wu Xie has no money to pay back, he can go to the Huo family. Therefore, Wu Xie went bankrupt and paid off his debts, and the Huo family did not have to pay at all.
Part 4
5. Zhang Qiling and Hei Xiazi studied in Germany together?
False. First of all, it is never mentioned in the book that I have been to Germany. This rumor may have developed from "Zhang Qiling understands German". So, can I speak German?
When (Xiao)ge went to investigate Dong Can's whereabouts, he found a German corpse and a notebook in the snowy mountains. In the notebook, there were things about the ultimate recorded by the Germans. Later, Wu Xie found a note left by the Germans in the jacket draped over (Xiao)ge's statue. From these details, it seems to be inferred that I understand German. However, the Germans have been involved in matters related to the archaeological inversion for a long time, and they have also used each other with the Zhang family. When Wu Xie entered Medog, he also met many Germans and brought his own translator, so it was not difficult to find a German or even a German translator in Medog. It is not ruled out that he does not need to be very proficient in German to communicate with Germans.
Moreover, he is a person who is extremely talented in languages. When he went to investigate Dong Can, he could not understand the conversation of the Tibetan porter and could not understand the word "ultimate" written in Tibetan in his notebook. But later he learned it after staying in Medog for a while, so it is entirely possible that he learned basic German through communicating with Germans in Medog. Does language learning have to be achieved by going abroad? What's more, he didn't even have an ID card at the time, so how could he go to Germany......
Later, Xu Lei even said that (Xiao)ge didn't know German well:
「Xu Lei’s new book live broadcast in October last year (2022)
Host: A friend asked if Xiaoge can speak Northeastern dialect?
Xu Lei: Then he can definitely speak it. Xiaoge can also speak English.
Host: Does he speak German, too?
Xu Lei: Ah? (Shocked, why didn’t I know about this?)
Host: A friend said below that Xiaoge can also speak German, so you are writing a book for Sanshu (NPSS), but Xiaoge doesn't speak German.
Xu Lei: (Laughing awkwardly) Yeah, yeah.
Host: (Laughing awkwardly) If you have a mouth, you can speak.
Xu Lei: Well... that's possible, maybe a little bit, but it's that kind of... uh... then I can say that I can do it a little bit.
Host: Xiaoge can also speak zongzi language.
Xu Lei: Yes, actually it is called insect language, which simulates the sound of insects to test whether there are very dangerous insects in the corpse.」
6. Did Li Cu say "Wake up, we're going home" to Wu Xie in Sand Sea? [IIrc it should be the other way around but it has the same point though]
False. The only time this sentence appears in the entire Daomu Biji series is in Daomu Biji Vol. 8, when Wu Xie and Pangzi went to the Zhang family's Ancient Building to save Xiaoge. When Wu Xie saw the ancient building and saw his brother dying, he thought he was dead. He instantly felt that the world had collapsed, his body felt despair one step ahead of his consciousness, and he patted (Xiao)ge's face in a state of despair and said, "Wake up, go home."
So how did the rumor come to be that Li Cu also said such things to Wu Xie? Since I haven't watched any movies and TV series related to Daomu Biji, I searched for a long time and found out that this is the plot of the Sha Hai (Tomb of the Sea) web series, which was rumored to be the original content, and coupled with the spread of the yx (marketing) account, it became a rumor that everyone said. Personally, I hope that the book and the drama can be separated, at least not to spread unfounded rumors as the content of the original work (the novel).
My thought:
It was posted in December 2023, so I think it's still relevant. I don't know if anyone would be interested in this matter but I think it's pretty interesting, so I couldn't help but repost it here (^~^;)ゞ
Thanks for reading! (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

the dmbj fandom is a pretty small fandom all things considered, and as much as there are a couple of active dmbj fandom spaces out there to choose from to engage with it, sometimes it's hard to find one that talks about what you specifically want to talk about, and it can be a bit of an isolating experience depending on what it is you're looking for
so i thought i'd make this post not so much to promote (even if that's kind of what this is doing anyway) but more to let people know that the changbai mountain discord server also exists as one of those active spaces in case anyone is wandering around wondering what their options are
for full transparency, i'm one of the mods in it so my take is going to be biased BUT. it's pretty active despite being small, so i thought it couldn't hurt to make the larger fandom aware of it and what the general vibes are if you will
none of these topics are exclusive as it's very much a "dmbj in general" type of server but:
- as far as ship go, probably a solid 90% of what's talked about is pingxie or heihua (slightly more pingxie just because that happens to be the blorbos of most of the members), so if that's your thing then there's a lot of that
- there's also a lot of talk about the books and meta about them since a lot of the current members are reading them at different paces (myself included), but everyone in the server has seen the dramas and movies and are happy to talk about them as well (we have conjuring curse/misty creed believers pspsp)
- as far as characters go the focus of discussions is heavily on the main cast, so the iron triangle, xiao hua, hei xiazi, and huo xiuxiu, but again, it's not an exclusive rule or anything, just the general preference
as it's a small server it's overall pretty cozy, but because of that it's also not a public server, so if any of this sounds like something you'd be interested in, feel free to dm! always happy to welcome new people!

2023 ao3 wrapped
last year @programmedradly and i asked each other some questions, rather than try to field the entire thing. so we did the same thing this year! and here are my answers. i had a wild little annus mirabilis and somehow posted more work than i ever have before, so there was lots to choose from.
3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
tragically, one of my dead doves: the wu xie/li cu fic “you bear your scars, you've done your time.” no one reads it because it's an age-gap pairing, and it's inherently tragic (post-sha hai fucked-up wu xie). it has 17 whole kudos and it fought for every one. but like a lot of my badwrong pairings, it's honestly some of my best writing. i wrote it fast and the action scenes are solid, the dialogue is good and even funny, and the sex scenes are miserable and scorching. oh well, they can put it in my norton critical edition after i'm dead lol.
5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?
readers seemed to like the pingxie kissing fic, which was funny to me because it's literally just…kissing. (i wanted to put in plot and/or sex but mumble was very stern with me: “this is a KISSING fic.”) i guess we all are still battered by canon and just want wu xie dozing by the carp pool and getting kissed.
6. Favorite title you used?
“the subtle fire," with its title from the calamus poems by walt whitman; all its subheadings are from whitman too. sadly otherwise this was the year of taylor, and i exhausted midnights and all the vault tracks. new year's resolution: moratorium on fic titles from tay.
8. Pairing you wrote the most for this year?
somehow there were 18 dmbj fics. 😳 pingxie won out with 9 fics, followed by 6 heihua fics and then a smattering of rare pairs (not to say dead doves lol). there were 5 under the skin fics; at this point i post one of those like every two damm weeks because i'm down that bad.
10. What work was the quickest to write?
probably either of my drabbles—a little rpf prose poem for zhu yilong/unnamed photographer (still my most beloved pairing) or shen wei smoking a cigarette and zhao yunlan being horrified (and a little turned on).
11. What work took you the longest to write?
without a doubt, the 31k guardian fic i just posted. i got freaked out by its complexity and dropped it for a year, and then had to TOIL over all the canon details, because i didn't remember ANYTHING apparently (zhang shi who? fu you? li qian? what?). it took for fucking EVER to finish and i will NEVER write such a plotty monster again. the worst part was when ma gui randomly said, “oh there's a fifth hallow” at which point i was like “there's a WHAT NOW.” ironically that turned out to be the title. i hate characters that TALK and SAY SHIT.
15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?
the pingxie epic 😭 i'm not sure if i even can ever finish it because it involves google searches like “recent tomb discoveries china” and “can you survive c4 explosion.” also it'll be another dead dove because it starts with wu xie divorcing bai haotian, and the iron triangle being broken up. and that's just the beginning. everyone will hate it, and instead read cute fics about liu sang being a fox, probably.
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
it's gotta be du cheng from under the skin. he embodies what is turning into my favorite character archetype, Big Dumb Hot Cop. so butch. so loyal. so stupid. just a blast to narrate. wu xie and hei xiazi have similar idiot energy but are also paradoxically very intelligent so that's more challenging. (writing xiaoge's dialogue is difficult as fuck. he can't just say "wu xie" ALL the time.)
28. Favorite work you wrote this year?
possibly, after everything, the end (for me) of the zhu yilong/unnamed photographer series. other people may keep adding to it but i needed to let them go. they exist in such a liminal unsettled never-together bittersweet place for me and i felt grateful to have spent time with them, as weird as that is to say. i'll always love unnamed photographer, and his aesthetic yearning. MY ONE RPF SHIP THAT WENT CANON. 😭
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
indulging myself and submitting a few:
Even Huos had to sleep sometime, or hang upside down, or whatever it was they did to restore themselves. [x]
Once he has him flat on his back again, with breathtaking pragmatism Shen Yi drips lube all over him, sinks down on him and then rides him so hard Du Cheng sees not just stars but entire constellations. [x]
Xiaoge kissed his hair. "Hold still," he said, and Wu Xie could do that, no problem. He fell asleep that way, curled against Xiaoge’s naked skin, and dreamed he was watching Xiaoge plant moss in the moss garden, in impossible colors: turquoise, bright orange. A richly saturated luminous violet. [x]
Xiazi added so much condensed milk to Xie Yuchen’s coffee that he finally had to arrest his hand forcibly. “Stop trying to give me diabetes.” Xiazi’s smile was worse than the cloying milk. “It’s to match the sweetness in your soul, my little flower." “Oh my god,” said Xie Yuchen faintly, as Geya listened, to all appearances visibly entertained. “What do you want? Because I assume you want something. Money? Work? Is this a hostage situation?” Xiazi just smiled harder, but at least he put the milk down, in favor of giving Xie Yuchen another pain au chocolat. “Why does he get all the pastry?” Geya said, sounding disappointed. “It’s to build his strength,” Hei Xiazi told him, and the patently, horribly uxorious look on Xiazi’s face made Xie Yuchen want to hit someone.) [x]
Xiao Hua manages to bite back a tart comment about how challenging it is to keep looking younger than forty when one’s companion will never look any older. It takes more than expensive rose hip and argan oil and ceramides; it takes never skipping the gym, and always skipping dessert. It means going to bed at nine-thirty when he’d rather stay up reading, and above all it means not letting Hei Xiazi know about any of these little maneuvers, lest it not seem effortless. [x]
As Wu Xie started enthusiastically laying out the details—and why was he awake at this miserable hour?—Hei Xiazi pulled the pillow away from his face and started gently hitting Xie Yuchen with it. “Wu Xie, let me call you back later,” he said, arresting the pillow’s movement with one hand. “I have something I have to deal with here.” “Sure,” said Wu Xie, cheerful. Then: “I bought Pangzi an espresso machine, and he taught me how to use it! Xiaoge’s not here, I wish he’d come home. I had five cups! You should take Hei Xiazi with you, just in case things get complicated. They might. Get complicated, I mean. I'll tell you all about it. When will you call me?” Xie Yuchen fought not to laugh. “After sunrise, probably. Drink some water. And tell Pangzi I’m going to kill him.” [x]
Su Wan seems lost in thought for a minute. “I always thought maybe one day I would like guys, but I don’t.” Li Cu elbows him. “What about Hei-ye?” Su Wan looks horrified. “Yali, no! What a thought!” “Okay, okay,” says Li Cu, and drunkenly tousles his hair. “Calm down.” Yang Hao puts out his hand for the bottle. “Hei-ye is pretty cool, though,” he says, which is high praise from him. It’s true. They sit without saying anything for a moment, in silent contemplation of Hei Xiazi’s inarguable coolness. [x]
The things about you that other people find unsettling, those have somehow never bothered Wu Xie. You’re spooky, Hei Xiazi told you frankly, once. I am too, but I drown it out by talking. You’re so silent, our little Yaba Zhang. People are afraid of you. Xiazi had been right, and you knew it. But Wu Xie has never been afraid of you, not even once. You think about the first time you came back from behind the gate, how furious and desperate he’d been to know why you hadn’t come straight back to him. Demanding answers, wanting to know why you went, what you saw. And you remember gazing back at him, still mute with the magnitude of it. He could never have understood, but no one could, not even Wu Xie whose intelligence shone as clearly as an aura around him, glowing, burnished—still innocent, still young enough to be passionate. Whereas even at the time you felt every single one of your hundred years lying on you like a burden, like fallen trees pressing you into the loam, the moss, the muck. [x]
He’s still half-asleep, is the only thing that could possibly explain why Zhao Yunlan ducks under some low-slung branches and strolls right up to the water’s edge only to see Shen Wei, stripped naked, hip-deep in a pool of still clear water, combing through his unbraided hair with his fingers. Why is this a surprise. What was he thinking. And above all, why is he still walking towards him on automatic, as if drawn toward him, as if not caring whether Shen Wei would see him or stop— Shen Wei startles and looks up, motion arrested. He’s bent at the waist, rinsing bits of dirt and bracken from his hair, skin glowing like wet marble, and Zhao Yunlan suddenly wants him so badly he couldn’t make a fist if he had to. Shen Wei smiles, and Zhao Yunlan will never get enough of that smile, artless and full-hearted. All he can do is smile back, helplessly. [x]

8 Shows to Get to Know Me
thank you for tagging me josi @wanderlust-in-my-soul ♥ am always happy to talk about shows that are important to me~
(tried to write these down in order from oldest to newest! meaning: when they came into my life and changed me)
I. Merlin (2008-2012)
one of the first shows i ever watched from a streaming site (aka illegally online haha), tho i did start watching it while it was airing on our tv. i adore the atmosphere, the world, the characters, and the whole journey throughout all five seasons. it feels whole. the fandom here is also amazing, even if i mostly watch it from afar ♥
II. Theory of Love (2019)
am not really sure when exactly i watched this for the first time, but i have vague memories of the last ep or the special ep only having just aired. it was one of my first introductions to bls - to good and more thoughtful bls - and i loved it with my whole chest. after rewatching it a year ago, i can still say it’s one of those shows that has rearranged something permanently in me.
III. Sense8 (2015-2018)
the show that feels like it was made for me. it’s just so full of things i love: fantasy, mysteries, action, character bonds, found family, love, acceptance, understanding, and even psychological themes. i love each of the characters very dearly and enjoyed all of their relationships with each other. i also loved what this show did with intimacy, both the emotional and physical kind, by showing how it can be a source of great comfort.
IV. The Untamed (2019)
my first ever cdrama that opened up a whole new world for me. it became one of my first ever big hyperfixations, one of my great loves. it let me dive into the world of other cdramas and so even more great shows. and it brought me to many new things and ppl here on tumblr after leading me into editing and so to the mdzs network ♥
V. The Lost Tomb 2 / Explore With The Note (2019)
i cannot really pack dmbj into only one show bc each of the adaptations has given me something to chew on, but tlt2 is always my baby. it is the show that made me love pingxie, the show that made me insane about their story, and the show i would die for. it gave me serious brainrot for such a long time, and even if it’s not the best one of the adaptations, it’s still very, very dear to me.
VI. You’re My Glory (2021)
i never thought a romance show would get to me but this one did in so many ways. it taught me some precious lessons and i think it changed how i see accomplishments, dreams, and working hard to reach personal goals. it gave me hope and strength, and it just made me believe in love that is comfortable and adjusts to your needs.
VII. Bad Buddy (2021)
the show that changed me about a year ago. the show that somehow opened up a lock inside of me, that allowed me to feel new things, that comforted me and understood me. idk if any bl can ever feel as much home as bb does. little did i know that when i started watching this silly bl during the christmas it was still airing, it would consume me, heart and soul, and then lead me here, wrapped up in this bl world.
VIII. Vice Versa (2022)
if there’s one show to define me right now, to define me for the past year, it’s vice versa. it’s everything to me in every sense. it’s a show i go to when i want to cry, or smile, or feel warm, or happy, or sad, or delighted, or comforted, or loved. it’s a show that feels like a hug, a show that heals me in all the ways i need to be healed. it means so much to me. and it doesn’t hurt that it’s still one of the most beautiful bls i’ve ever seen ♥ (i could write essays of vv, tho at the same time it feels like the jane austen quote, “if i loved you less, i might be able to talk about it more”)
some honorary mentions:
The Long Ballad (2021), Not Me (2021), My Country: The New Age (2019), The Blood of Youth (2022), and 3 Will Be Free (2019)

To a starship, what is home?

Excerpt:
When the gate opened, it bloomed like a flower. Empty space was suddenly anything but, alive with energy that unfurled from a pinpoint and spread to stain the blackness with brilliant light. It was a riot of color; azure shading to bruiselike gold and bronze, then spilling over into purple and the ultraviolet-and-beyond that Wu Xie’s helmet told him was there, so bright that the automatic faceplate shading began to shield his view. He gave an impatient override and the spreading shadow leached away: nothing to come between him and what he had come so far to see. The wealthiest in the galaxy would have paid a planet’s value for this sight, but Wu Xie was looking, not at the wormhole, but for what he could see against it, dwarfed by the vastness of the riotous display. The moments stretched eternal: one heartbeat. Two. Sleek and graceful, delicate and deadly, through the iris of the gate flowed the most beautiful starship in the universe.
Author’s commentary (minor fic spoilers):
Ahhh, the everlasting aroace dilemma: do you want to bond with the sentient spaceship, or you do want to be the sentient spaceship?
This idea came together from @thelaithlyworm‘s prompts in this and previous fic exchanges, and once it had bitten me it would not let go.  I’ve always adored stories about sentient spaceships and their bonds with others, so this is strongly influenced by many different fictional universes even though it is not strictly based on any one of them.  There’s just something about the vast differences of scale and time and experience and personality still finding a meeting point that is intensely important to those involved that parallels oddly well to the PingXie dynamic.
As always, one of the most fun things about an AU is translating canon events and characters to a new universe.  Jumping back and forth between timelines can be a little jarring, but it’s an effective narrative way to cherrypick just the bits you want to play with!  I was especially surprised - in a good but melancholy sort of way - how well A Ning’s fate tied in.  Wreck-diving for tomb-raiding as such a natural substitution, and the adventures-in-translation snippet was just too fun to toss in there.  I’m afraid that I wasn’t able to come up with a solid story for the overall Why of the whole bronze gate plotline before I REALLLLY had to finish this up for the deadline, so I had to settle for NPSS style mysteriousness and hope it doesn’t show too badly.
I especially loved sneaking Hei Xiazi in as a junk-heap of a starship that should never have been sentient in the first place. While Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling’s relationship in this verse may be purely a meeting of minds and souls, we do not want to talk about the hinky stuff that Hei Xiazi and Xiao Hua get up to.
The auction scene may or may not have been somewhat inspired by the end of Galaxy Quest.  I’m not telling.

hello! since i haven't read the dmbj novels yet (i've only watched the shows and the rest i know through fandom osmosis like all of us atp lol) i've been wondering. correct me if i'm wrong, but i've seen you mentioning that at one point wu xie actually realizes to some extent that his feelings about xiaoge are romantic and i'm curious about when? is this in the restart novel or did i miss something major in reboot? i got the impression from others that while npss is as close to saying pingxie is canon as you can get without outright saying it, it's still not a thing in the books technically speaking so if that's not the case i'm really curious
Hi!! <3 Haha what do you mean "without outright saying it", what else is there to say? lol
The rest I know through fandom osmosis.. lmao I felt that. Thats how it started for me too, now I fell somewhere too deep in some junkie pit xD
The moment I was talking about is when Wu Xie started having as he mentioned several dreams about Xiaoge taking a role of his husband life partner in some customs, and how pictures of these were "romantic" to him. That was the first time he used this word to describe it and was like "why why did this word appear in my head". Again it doesn't mean that before that in the books there were no hints to that or that he wasn't in love with him for some time already by then, just meaning that it was the first time his brain caught up to his heart and he finally "admitted" it to himself for what it is. (Bc to me in good love stories you can't pinpoint the exact moment someone falls in love, only the exact moment they accept it as a fact and their brain settles about it xD).
If I remember correctly in some extra bit Wu Xie doesn't remember when these dreams started, only that it was somewhere after Xiaoge left for 10 years. All of Wu Xie's romantic thoughts are dark AS FUCK for some reason (well, like we know why.. all considering, but still lol), but the start of it was when he saw in his dream Xiaoge accompaning him to death, which is what Npss sneakily added to Reboot in that "coma sequence" (thats Wu Xie's romance language lmfao).
And also as much as the books are just not that kind of genre, in my personal opinion, I don't see how they can be considered "technically not a thing" xD. Like yeah, it's not any gooey relationship-y scenes, but they still have their romantic tropes moments, that are way too obvious even without that Wu Xie's speech (like the moment he mentioned it isn't any wow-wow moment, I already knew that xD). Like in the Restart part all of his thoughts about Xiaoge just become to say very.. naked. And quite impossible to interpret in any other way. It's just basically a suffering of a man, who thinks that his feelings can't be returned, not just in general, but also bc of who they are and bc he's dying.
Bc like I've said before to me all the books are split into "getting to know each other" part, "why do I feel that. I don't wanna. what is this?" part, "I know, but I'm too angry and sad rn to process this" part and finally Restart, where he already accepted the fact that he's in love with him, just thinks he can't be with him.
In previous books there are still moments for example like when Xiaoge is looking at him for too long and Wu Xie goes like "oh is there smth on my face?" lol you know those kind of things. Where his turtle brain is just still not there and he doesn't see it in a relationship-y way. After 10 years all his thoughts are like "pls stay with me forever, look at me forever, lets get married, have a nice house somewhere" lmao
There are also lots of notes and traditional stuff and etc throughout the books that are explained by fans that I keep gathering (I dig those, bc its hella fascinating to me how they can do super gay when others don't think much of some moments xD). I feel like I've learned like so many chinese (also tibetan too xD) cultural things, that I haven't even during my MDZS craze. This fandom is pretty crazy (in a great way I mean).
Problem with Reboot (I mean the series) is that I'm still not sure I got everything lmao. Like I do not get how, but it keeps resurfacing and I keep reading all these like "oh...OH.. OHHHH" xDDD (and okay this is not that important, but still no matter how obsessively I'm watching, where the fuck am I supposed to see water packaging with my great -6 sight? lmao). And some stuff is just plain hard cause I just can't catch the "word play".
Besides all the covered up scenes stuff and music, about romantic implications... there's things like when Xiao Bai talks about stars and for example, after Wu Xie tells her about missing Xiaoge it's a throwback to the oldest Chinese legend of the lovers separated by a Milky Way, Vega and Altair, who were deeply in love but only allowed to see each other once a year for one night when one of them is on the verge of dying from grief, and in a tandem with Deneb these two stars form an infamous triangle constellation (I mean, I don't think that leaves much stuff for interpretation really xD). And again peanut scene is also not a peanut scene. There's lots of hidden cuteness there, but the "afterlife" scene just hits different for sure lol.
So anyways even without the "romantic" piece, it's too obvious in the books. But I mean if you REALLY REALLY need this word for some proof, it's there in one place. But then also like why. I mean there's a reason in China they're on the same level (actually above from what I've seen) as all of their other great BLs. Like just cause they din't say I love yous with those particular words (they got better ones) or kissed (yeah yeah breath of life doesn't count lol), doesn't mean they're not as canon. I don't think Npss ever actually was like "its that but not quite that" or being any particulary covert about the nature of their relationships. And that fact that he kinda "didn't mean for them to fall in love, it just naturally happened" is to me the reason why their love story is so iconic now lol.
P.S. also I feel like it's pretty easy to get the moment in the books when you just know. Cause they're both the type of ppl who are "relationships don't interest me at all in this world" (like literally full on zero, no thanks) but then suddenly there's a moment when they're very interested in everything with each other lol. And if with Qiling I mean its obvious that with his past and everything its just pretty impossible to gain his trust or respect in general and to make him fall in love as NPSS said only Wu-Xie-Mr-Extraordinary could, and its all understandable. But Wu Xie's part is just so funny to me bc he treats his feelings like "ok what is this bizarre animal"? xDD

@merinnan in reference to this post and this post.
You want MORE?  I’ll gladly give you more. ;D
So, Xiaoge fits in exactly where he’s always fit in: with the Iron Triangle.  Wu Xie may not be an easy fit with Zhao Yunlan, and Shen Wei and Xiaoge are far too much alike some very specific ways to be entirely easy with each other, but this fic is still sailing the Weilan and Pingxie ships quite decisively.  ^_^  And because both Zhao Yunlan and Xiaoge understand what it’s like to fall for the tender-eyed moppet version of Shen Wei/Wu Xie just to come back and find him... older and a little harder and not quite the same, they kind of... get each other.  It’s unspoken most of the time, but they both love Shen Wei/Wu Xie, and ultimately just want him to be happy.  So, they share.  ^_^
Of course... Xiaoge is NOT used to a Wu Xie who can pick up his sword and use it as well as, if not better than he can.  And Zhao Yunlan is not used to a Shen Wei who can and will knock back a beer after a hard day’s work.  And for the most part, those lines don’t blur and don’t cross, but... sometimes... So, it takes a little getting used to on all their parts.
And sometimes Xiaoge worries, that if Wu Xie doesn’t need him for protection anymore, then what does he need him for?  But Wu Xie is always quick to reassure him that a) he *does* still need him for protection and b) that was NEVER all he needed Xiaoge for to begin with.  But still... sometimes Xiaoge will trail him around... just in case.  Because he *does* talk to Zhao Yunlan, and knows that Shen Wei is not always good about keeping himself out of danger, and that he may need more protecting than he lets on.  So he takes to shadowing Shen Wei when he’s more Shen Wei, just in case he needs help and won’t ask for it.
Chu Shuzhi does *not* approve.
Shen Wei HAS back up.  He doesn’t need Xiaoge for backup.
...until he does.
It’s probably not a major incident on anyone’s scale?  Some Dixingren who can summon venomous insects, maybe.  Or Shen Wei carrying a stack of papers and books so tall he can’t see over them and ends up colliding with a student near the top of a flight of stairs.  Nothing that would have done him irreparable damage, but because Xiaoge is *there*... he takes no damage at all.  And he’s a bit embarrassed, Hei Pao Shi’s lone warrior pride warring with Wu Xie’s starry-eyed “Tuxedo Mask, you came again!” reaction whenever Xiaoge saves him from something, and the calculating look in Chu Shuzhi’s eyes canNOT bode well for him, he knows that, but he doesn’t ask, because he just does not want to know.
From that point on, Xiaoge and Chu Shuzhi get on FAMOUSLY.  They spend a lot of time sitting and brooding in corners or on rooftops, watching over Shen Wei or the SID or the Iron Triangle, and no one can figure out what they even TALK ABOUT, but that’s only because they don’t speak stoic face as well as Shen Wei/Wu Xie does.  And Shen Wei/Wu Xie will NEVER TELL ANYONE what he reads in their faces when they’re “brooding” together, because what’s really going on is they’ve become the Waldorf and Statler of the Guardian/DMBJ world and all the snark is conveyed by minute twitches of lips and eyebrows and they’re having the absolute time of their lives with it.  ;D

Let's say I’m posting this in celebration of another Daomu adaptation airing, albeit this excerpt has nothing to do with Heavenly Palace On The Clouds xD But this has been sitting in my Drafts for way too long. It’s one the most prominent excerpts of the series, so here we go.
Tumblr media
- Excerpt from Daomu Biji: Shi Nian (Ten Years Later) Final Chapter, translated by my-otp-list
"Pangzi came over and handed me a cell phone: "Let's listen to some music. What should we listen to today?"
"What do you have?" I took the phone and swiped across the app to find that his Music list was all elderly’s group dance soundtracks. If we had this on, Xiao Ge probably would step back into the Bronze Gate. That said, I actually felt rather excited.
"Don’t you have some fitting music for our situation?”
"There’s one song that has been quite popular recently. A girl from Banai sent it to me." Pangzi took back the phone and swiped for a long time. Finally, he turned the phone up: "See You Again."
I let it play softly, and the singing wasn’t loud. It was in English. I quietly listened to the song, and Pangzi didn't speak either.
[It's been a long day without you, my friend,
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again.]
Pangzi hummed along, which, in fact, sounded pretty nice. In complete silence, we listened to the song for a long time.
It shouldn’t be that he won’t come out? I sighed, and slowly, Pangzi fell asleep, snoring lightly by my side.
Although I tried to crank all the nerves in my head, I couldn’t help but feel very sleepy while listening to the music.
In the dimness, I saw the Bronze Gate open.
Did I just turn into the Little Match Girl? I thought, then I rubbed my face and opened my eyes.
Sure enough, no one was there.
I knew I couldn’t keep myself awake this way, so I looked at Pangzi and started talking to him.
"The people in that village have this kind of dessert, which is made with glutinous rice and brown sugar. Because they have lots of rain, a special weed called Yuzai ginseng grows in that village. This dessert contains Yuzai ginseng’s petals, which will help retain one’s memory longer. Of course, this is just a local legend."
As I said so, I let out a long yawn and my consciousness began to blur, but I continued to talk. No one knew how long I sat there enduring the sleepiness, but suddenly, in my haziness, someone slowly sat down next to me.
I hesitated for a moment and titled my head to look over, and the other person also tilted his head to look at me.
Pangzi gradually woke up and looked at us.
I saw a familiar face whose indifferent eyes reflected the light of the campfire.
People said that if you forgot a person, the first thing you forgot was his voice. But when his voice rang in my ears, I didn’t feel unfamiliar at all.
"You’ve gotten old." He said.
The music was still flowing, in this place that was closest to Hell.
Pangzi stood up and hooked his arm over Men You Ping’s shoulders, causing him to stagger: "How can we compare with Xiao Ge? Finally you’re out!”
Men You Ping swayed left and right.
I pulled down my sleeve to cover the scars on my arm and stood up.
He smiled at me, and I picked up the bag: "Let's go."
We simply just,
hadn’t seen each other for a long time.
[I’m at the North Sea, you’re at the South Sea
The letters I send flying through the sky won’t reach your hands.
A glass of wine and peach plums, in the wind of spring
Amid this rain through the nights, for ten years the light will shine.]*
(Ten Years Later, The End)"

Let's Talk About PingXie: Part 3
PingXie Fanfiction Vocabulary
Or "Some Words in PingXie Fanfiction That Can't Be Translated Properly by MTL" XD
Here is a list of words that I found interesting, and occasionally appeared in PingXie fanworks. Some of these words, I couldn't find the exact equivalent in English, so excuse me for the long explanation. My friend helped me but my knowledge is still limited (^~^;)ゞ
It's not a complete list (and kinda random). Please note that they are mostly used in PingXie/DMBJ fandom, I don't know about other fandoms. I may add some more, if I find it again.
【1】 窗户纸 (mtl: window paper) : it's like a trope where they're being so ambiguous and the status of their relationship may not be revealed, but everyone also knows that they are lovers. It's a special connotation of symbolic objects in Chinese culture, refers to two people who have a very deep love but did not confess to each other, their feelings are hidden in the heart. Other people also know that their relationship is similar to lovers but they did not say it. It's like a layer of window paper has not been pierced.
【2】 捅窗户纸 (mtl: pierce the window paper) : it's almost the same as the previous one, but they come to the realization of their feelings and confess to each other. They end up together, become lovers.
【3】 论坛体/直播体 (mtl: forum body/live broadcast body) : something like Social Media AU, but it's often on the forum instead or written in forum style.
【4】 竹马 (mtl: bamboo horse) : a male childhood friend
【5】 校草 (mtl: school grass/school bully) : the most handsome boy in the school
【6】 沙雕 (mtl: sand sculpture) : funny and silly
【7】 骨科 (mtl: orthopedics) : incest
【8】 伪骨科 (mtl: pseudo-orthopedics) : they are brothers but not real siblings
【9】 清水 (mtl: clear water) : no description of s*xual activities
【10】 破镜重圆 (reunited after a broken mirror) : they meet again after separation which is usually not in a good way/unreconciled
【11】 本传 (mtl: biography) : refers to the main story of DMBJ
【12】 杭州名木/杭州著名木头 or 吴邪,杭州一块有名的木头 (mtl: Wu Xie, a famous piece of wood in Hangzhou) : it's like comparing Wu Xie to the wood, because he is being oblivious and insensitive, he doesn't notice that Zhang Qiling loves him haha. There is a meme based on this lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meme source: I forgot where I got it, but there's a watermark in it. The picture on the right is translated using mtl with some corrections, sorry for my poor translation (๑•﹏•)
【13】 铁木真/铁・木・真 (tiě mù zhēn/temujin) : it's not Genghis Khan here, it's a pun or a joke about Wu Xie. It's like the previous one, but added one more element.
"铁" (tl: steel/iron) for "钢铁直男" means he is a straight man of steel
"木" (tl: wood) for "杭州著名木头" means he is the famous wood in Hangzhou
"真" for "天真" Wu Xie's "Tiānzhēn"
【14】白月光 "bái yuèguāng" (mtl: white moonlight) : the first love that can't be forgotten
【15】 吴山四美 "wúshān sì měi" : four beauties of Wushan(ju)—Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, Xie Yuchen, Hei Xiazi
【16】 嫩牛五方 "nèn niú wǔ fāng" : a group of five people—Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, Pangzi, Xie Yuchen, Hei Xiazi
【17】 挨千刀 (mtl: suffer a thousand cuts) : it is used to scold someone, but it is not insulting them. Its tone is more into worried rather than being angry. For example, Wu Xie complains "挨千刀的闷油瓶" in his heart, it sounds like he uses a spoiled tone to show his annoyance.
【18】 醋[瓶] (mtl: vinegar) : jealous [Zhang Qiling]
【19】 墨水[瓶] (mtl: ink) : a slight dark [Zhang Qiling]
【20】 排雷 (mtl: demining) : a setting that you should pay attention before reading, usually it is unacceptable for most people.
【21】 黑金古刀 (mtl: black gold ancient sword/black gold ancient knife) : Xiaoge's sword
【22】 大白狗腿 (mtl: big white dog legs) : Wu Xie's dagger
【23】 发丘指 (mtl: hair mound finger/Faqiu finger) : Zhang Qiling's two long fingers
【24】 哥嫂 : brother and sister-in-law, refers to Zhang Qiling (哥) and Wu Xie (嫂)
【25】 吃软饭 "chī ruǎn fàn" (mtl: eat soft rice) : a slang that means men rely on women to survive
【26】 吃豆腐 (mtl: eating tofu) : something like taking advantage of others, teasing or flirting, etc.
【27】 PA : parody
⚠️ NSFW Terms ⚠️
【28】 脐橙 (mtl: navel orange) : a wordplay of "骑乘" which means r*ding
【29】 水煎 (mtl: boiled water/water decoction) : a word play for "睡奸" which means somn*philia
【30】 Doi : same as ML (from English "do" and "i" from Chinese "Love" (爱 "ài")
【31】 双龙 (mtl: double dragon) : a man gets r*ped by two other men at the same time, in this case, it has the same meaning as "两瓶一邪" (both of the 2 Zhang Qiling, 1 Wu Xie).
【32】 爆炒/炒 (mtl: stir-fry/fried) : erotic content/explicit s*xual content
【33】 QJ : r*pe
【34】 XP : s*xual fetish
【35】 SP : sp*nking

For ask a character - Sha hai era Wu xie
Favourite thing about them: Oh god, hurt baby boy Wu Xie. He is so angry and so pissed off. I love how he will legit do anything for Xiaoge. He would burn the whole world down for Xiaoge. I also love what a shit he is. This is like normal Wu Xie, dialed up to 100 and giving no shits if he comes off nicely. he's not even trying. He's got his goal in mind, and he's gonna get to that goal come hell or high water. He will turn this world into one where Xiaoge can be free of all the bullshit that is making him have to leave Wu Xie all the time. He will make sure Xiaoge never has to leave him again. We call this his 'Mob Boss!Widow!Wu Xie' phase, and as much as I hate that he's hurting so much - I love seeing him be a, no shit's given, mob boss. <3
Least favourite thing about them: That he self-harm's during this time, he hurts him to feel better about all the people he's sacrificing. He never wants to forget them. The scars on his arm, the snake venom that fucked up his sense of smell for any little bit of Xiaoge he can find... I get he wants to fuck over everyone whos been fucking Xiaoge over (*cough*Wangs*cough*) but you don't have to self-harm in the process, bby... :(
Favourite line: I can't remember the exact line, but the one that stands out to me is when he and Li Cu are talking. They get on the subject of Xiaoge, or 'the friend' Wu Xie is waiting for and Li Cu asks him something along the lines of - what if none of this works. What if he has to wait another ten years. Wu Xie, with no hesitation at all, says then he would wait another ten years. Just goes to show the level of love and loyalty that he has for Xiaoge, he would do anything for him. He would wait until the world ended for him, and would never forget. The other line that always gets me, is when he's with Su Nan (I think thats right) and he asks 3 things of her. That he takes his ashes back to Wushanju to be with his family. She goes to Changbai Mountain to meet his friend and tells him 'I can't take you home anymore', and that she come join him in hell if she is killed too. Minus the last one, that was just funny as hell and shows what a shit he is. The other two show how important his family and Xiaoge are to him. Always just makes me go 'awwwwwwwww'. <3
BrOTP: The Iron Triangle, Wu Xie, Xiaoge, and Wang Pangzi! I mean, Wang Pangzi is still 100% his bro, helping out and making sure shit goes right. Plus, with as much as he talks about Xiaoge, or thinks about Xiaoge, the boy might as well be there.
OTP: It's still the amazing Pingxie, even if Xiaoge isn't around... I like all types of pairings, have nothing against them. But, Pingxie is like the OTP of my heart. <3
NOTP: Still don't have one.
Random headcanon: I mean this might be true... but Wu Xie didn't know it was his turn to go into the gate. No one told him, not even Xiaoge. A fact that upset Wu Xie. He cares about Xiaoge so much, and Xiaoge couldn't be honest with him.
Unpopular opinion: Ugh, I don't know if I have any unpopular opinions? Ok, here off the top of my head - I don't think Wu Xie really cares about Li Cu at first. As long as he got what he needed, the boy could be another sacrifice. It wasn't until later when he realized how much Li Cu was like him, that he actually started caring about the kid and tried to make sure he wouldn't end up hurt.
Favourite picture of them:

Wu Xie: Xiao Ge. Come on. Its fine, I swear! This place is sealed up tight today, even Wang Meng got questioned by my uncle’s new security. Poor Wang Meng, our saucepan swordsman extraordinaire. Tho that security check may have been some confusion among the new staff over family names due to the Wang thing rather than actual hyper-vigilance but still! Anyway whoever sent the death threat letter probably wasn’t anyone you know:)
Zhang Qiling: That is less reassuring than you you seem to think it is.
Wu Xie: :(
Zhang Qiling: So the new security is incompetent?
Wu Xie: of course that’s what you got from that. Ugh. Xiao Ge. Everything is FINE. Actually fine. We are all fine. Do you understand me?
Zhang Qiling: I understand the words you have said.
Wu Xie: …okaaay. so you will go to sleep?
Zhang Qiling: Very well.
Wu Xie: thank you.
Wu Xie: wait hang on someone’s knocking on my door
Zhang Qiling: It’s alright, it’s just me.
Wu Xie: wtf
Zhang Qiling: I will go to sleep, like I said. Close to you, to protect you. You will be safe. Better than “fine.”
Wu Xie: …
Zhang Qiling: I have also brought more extra knives to conceal under the bed.
Wu Xie: why is this my life
Wu Xie: wait, MORE—
Note: yes I fully borrowed the whole Pingxie priorities of Wu Xie in Xiao Ge’s phone over Pangzi and adapted it BECAUSE THAT SCENE WAS FUNNY AND I WANTED MORE OF IT

八三夭 《盗墓笔记》 官方主题曲 《所信非神》 That In Which I Believe In Is Not God - ENG SUBS
So this is the first time I've actually properly translated and subtitled a song 😂 I tried to keep to the original wording as much as I could but there are few places where it's kinda vague or where the wording is just too awkward so I went with meaning or my own interpretation of the lyrics instead. 👀
List of Interpretations
1. 与宿命论个主臣 in a word for word translation would be "debating with Fate who is the master and who is the servant" which basically means they're fighting over superiority.
2. 当自己不死之身 is a really interesting one because 当 has 2 different meanings depending on which intonation is being used and this isn't always clear in songs cuz intonations get kinda murky in singing. Anyways, 'dāng' means to pretend whereas 'dàng' means to pawn. Since I interpreted this song as both from Wu Xie's and Xiao Ge's POV I decided to include both potential interpretation in my subtitling. So it can either mean "pawning my immortality" in Xiao Ge's POV or "pretending I have an immortal body" in Wu Xie's case.
Song Overview (Wu Xie's & Xiao Ge's POV):
Ok I read the song as being from BOTH Wu Xie's and Xiao Ge's POV instead of just one but that's my personal interpretation @thosch3i covered most of Wu Xie's POV and my own interpretation of the lyrics are pretty similar so I'll elaborate from there. This is how the song goes for me:
I give you a look with lost innocence of days past and gone that's tucked away in forgetfulness. (This is without question Wu Xie speaking because of the play on words - Tian Zhen)
Let the sound of raindrops gloss over the unsolved questions, let the sharpest blade be sealed away for safekeeping in this instant when life is at its most peaceful (OK, this could be either Wu Xie or Xiao Ge speaking to the other because both of them have a lot of unsolved questions: Wu Xie still doesn't know what happened to his San Shu and Xiao Ge is still looking for answers to his past. Both Xiao Ge and Wu Xie have been referred to as the sharpest blade of the Nine Gates. In Wu Xie's case, it's when he lost his innocence and became 邪帝 in the Sha Hai era. Xiao Ge was shaped to be a weapon ever since he was a baby stolen from his mother so it goes without saying he is the sharpest blade of the Nine Gates. (There's a saying that Wu Xie ended up becoming like Xiao Ge and Li Cu becoming like Wu Xie during his Tian Zhen era which I think is a pretty accurate reading but a discussion for another time.) Basically, regardless of which of them that's speaking they're telling the other to let go of all the questions tormenting them and sealing away the past and the way they've been conditioned to become a weapon for the Nine Gates and just live peacefully in Rain Village from now on - I'm assuming this is post Sha Hai.
My death, my life, it's not up to the ghosts and gods to intervene (Honestly, this can be either Wu Xie or Xiao Ge depending. Both are very stubborn and don't believe in leaving things up to fate.)
a wait of ten years, I've long since stopped smiling, stopped crying, stopped feeling pain, challenging fate to see who is superior (This could be Xiao Ge but I read it as more Wu Xie because of Qin Hao's line in Sha Hai when Hei Ye said "I still feel a bit of pain from time to time" and Wu Xie just straight up said "I've stopped feeling pain a long time ago".)
Pawning my immortality / Pretending I have an immortal body, to leave for you a gateway of life, this life was not in vain. (This is probably my favourite line of the song because is so freakin beautifully written? The reason there's an either or translation for the line I've explained above so we're just gonna do meta here. OK so in Xiao Ge's POV he went to guard the Bronze Gates in Wu Xie's stead to protect him so he could live a happy life. Essentially he is exchanging his immortality for Wu Xie's life because it was initially Wu Xie's fate to guard the Bronze Gates and he'd probably die in the process. Xiao Ge's immortality for Wu Xie having a life of happiness and innocence is worth it to him. He is using his immortality in exchange for a way for Wu Xie to live by going behind those gates. Remember that line: 用我一生换你十年天真无邪 my life in exchange for ten years of your innocence? That's basically what I think they're referring to. The reversed applies. It's Xiao Ge's responsibility to keep the Wang clan in check. Since Xiao Ge sacrificed himself so Wu Xie could live the life he wanted, Wu Xie decided to do the same for Xiao Ge by getting rid of the Wangs completely so Xiao Ge could be free to live the life he wanted when he exited the gates. Wu Xie wasn't trained like Xiao Ge nor did he have an immortal body like the Zhangs or had their self healing and magical qilin blood but he will pretend that he has all of those and take on the Wangs , wiping them out to give Xiao Ge a way out of being used by the Nine Gates again when he exits the gates, giving him a chance to live the life he wants. Even if he knows he could potentially die doing this, it's still worth it to him. Remember that line after Xiao Ge's: 只愿尽我一世无邪换你百载浅笑无忧 emptying all of my entire life's innocence in exchange for a hundred years of your easy smiles and lack of worries? That's what I think the song is referring to.)
Not even for a day in my entire life have I ever believed in ghosts or gods, but I spent ten years believing in one person. Even if the world is too cold, there is still your lingering warmth in my heart, I'll still rush into the journey, no matter how unfathomable the wasteland or perilous the path, never questioning whether it's fortune or calamity. Honestly, in my entire life, I've never believed in gods, only believed in them. (This can be both Xiao Ge and Wu Xie because the only person Xiao Ge believes in is Wu Xie - and Pang Zi. Vice versa, the only person Wu Xie believes in is Xiao Ge - and Pang Zi. None of them believe in fate or ghosts or gods but they believe in each other and only each other. Wu Xie is Xiao Ge's only connection in the world - thus the lingering warmth in my hear bit - and I'm pretty sure Xiao Ge also holds a special spot in Wu Xie's heart during the Sha Hai era when he becomes a hardened man. We see that flash of Tian Zhen softness when he's talking to Li Cu about Xiao Ge and Pang Zi. He even admits at the time that he has an obsession: to pick up Xiao Ge when he exits the Bronze Gates and take him home. Also, PingXie is constantly rushing head first into danger for one another? Even Pang Zi made a comment on this in Ultimate Note after the sword gifting ceremony that when Xiao Ge lost his memories, Wu Xie accompanies him on his journey and helps him look for his lost memories; when Wu Xie is in danger or gets into trouble in his obsessive search for answers and his San Shu, Xiao Ge comes to his rescue. Even in Reunion, Xiao Ge says he'll follow Wu Xie on his journey to Thunder City in search of answers and his San Shu. Neither of them ever question whether it is fortune or calamity that will befall them on these journeys. They'll go through hell fire and high waters for each other regardless of consequences.)
Exchanging gazes, in it are new sprouts of innocence, all old hatred tossed and tucked away in forgetfulness. (Xiao Ge talking about Wu Xie - post Sha Hai, now that Xiao Ge is back and Wu Xie isn't emo anymore, we see a bit of his Tian Zhen coming back, Xiao Ge can probably see it too. The edges aren't gone but there are now some softness growing back. There are new sprouts of innocence in Wu Xie's eyes again.)
But there are still spirits to drink together, and extra cigarettes enough to share, if there's us and the rest of our lives, then it is the greatest of good dreams. That in which I believe in is not a god. Entrusting my life and soul to you with a smile on the wretched battlefield, even the gods of death themselves must submit under the sword, the world has too many uncertainties, only this is the sole surety. But even the sharpest blade is also mere flesh and blood, I wish to give him affection and to let him rest and recuperate. (This can be either Wu Xie or Xiao Ge referring to their retired life in Rain Village that having just us - the iron triangle - as well as the rest of our lives then it's the best dream come true they could wish for. Also, Wu Xie and Xiao Ge's only belief is in each other but neither sees the other as a god. Wu Xie is unarguably human and Wu Xie sees Xiao Ge as human instead of a weapon or a god so it works both ways. Both Wu Xie and Xiao Ge are considered to be the sharpest blades of the Nine Gates with a tendency to go against fate and death. In Xiao Ge's case even death must bow its head under his sword and abide by his rule whereas in Wu Xie's case he himself is the sword so to speak and that he has defied death so many times as well as planned the death of the Wangs that in a way, death is under his control and has to do this bidding. I think it's also referring to the saying 麒麟一笑,阎王绕道;天真一笑,麒麟开道 when the qilin - a.k.a Xiao Ge - smiles even the lord of the underworld will make a detour to avoid his path; a smile of innocence - when Tian Zhen a.k.a Wu Xie smiles - the qilin clears the way. Not sure if this was in the original books or if it's just a comment made by fans online or by NPSS during interviews but it's pretty legit interpretation in my opinion. PingXie is each other's only constant in a world of uncertainties and they see the other as a human, not a god or weapon/blade to be used for the Nine Gates. I think after Sha Hai when Xiao Ge exits the Bronze Gates both are so wounded and scarred that they want to do is to give the other affection and for them to rest and recuperate from what they've suffered in those 10 years and more.)
Even a lifetime as a god, there can also be a moment, a minute of being an ordinary human. (Wu Xie referring to Xiao Ge that even though he has lived as a god for his entire life, there are still brief moments where he too can be an ordinary human. Xiao Ge is just an ordinary human, just like Wu Xie and Pang Zi.)
Anyways, sorry about the long post but that's about it I think. I'll add on if I ever think about anything in the future. Hope this post was helpful 😂

🦄💮Ooooooooor 🌼🐼you can talk a bit more about.....
V. bloodplay. feral xiaoge AU
😬😬
my sweetest loveliest jae ♥ but of course!
tbh i never tire of talking about my feral xiaoge. the flash of his. wolf eyes?? beast eyes??? in tlt2 are just stuck in my mind forever and that is why this fic exists. i wanted to explore his virus and what it does to him bc it seemed to a) affect his memory and b) make him somewhat feral. he is killing all those animals without any goal! he has that random hut full of captured and dead animals or something like that?? it was fascinating. (and my xiaoge does play with dead animals like a wolf pup playing with its pray so)
so the gist is kind of just... xiaoge first figuring out that he obviously lost his memory but that something animalistic was also let loose within him at the same time. then he meets wu xie, almost shoots him, and realizes that he could never do it which leaves him with questions. and then the beast within him gets interested in wu xie bc of this, bc it figures xiaoge out quicker than he does. it keeps wanting to kill ppl around it, keeps thirsting for blood and the feeling of something living dying beneath its hands, and it wants that for wu xie too at first but xiaoge refuses. not wu xie, he teels the beast and the beast gets it. then it starts thinking about other things they could do to this boy and xiaoge is very, very confused.
then the iron triangle kind of reunites (and this also involves xiaoge attacking pangzi and then absolutely despising a-ning bc the xiaoge can remember what a-ning did to wu xie and the beast takes that as permission to slaughter this lady) and they join chen pi ah si's expedition (and the beast remembers this old man, remembers how he stuffed them into a basket and used them as blood zombie bait even if xiaoge doesn't remember this at all). xiaoge follows wu xie bc there's no universe where he wouldn't follow this boy to the changbai mountain. bc he can feel the call of the mountain and he knows he should keep wu xie away from there. that mountain is hungry and it should not eat wu xie.
and then uuh. i only have plans until the end of tlt2 where the cave collapses. bc i wanted that to separate pingxie from the rest of the team. and wu xie is probably hurt and xiaoge takes care of him and it's just. kind of a struggle. bc the smell of wu xie's blood does something to the beast who already has dreams of killing wu xie in several very brutal ways. but then it mixes up with xiaoge's feelings for wu xie and the beast kind of... wants the other things now too. why not somehow mix both, pain and pleasure? blood can be many things, the beast whispers into xiaoge's ear and it's hard to shut it down when wu xie is right there, pretty and vulnerable. and xiaoge fears for wu xie so much bc his beast is so strong compared to his self restraint and. anything could happen, anything could go wrong. (and then i haven't dared to think any further but i keep thinking about xiaoge biting to wu xie's neck like that some way of him owning wu xie hhhh)
oh and also, the bronze gate is the only way to "fix" xiaoge's situation with the beast and get rid of the virus that let the beast loose within him. so he goes there to do that (steps through the gate to calm down so to speak. which is also for wu xie in the end bc this way wu xie is safe). but he comes back quicker than in canon bc i want him to return to wu xie and tell him about it and them to sort out whatever happened in the cave. i want xiaoge to show wu xie he is ok. and then i want xioage to take wu xie the hell away from that horrible gate and mountain. (how does wu xie's canon story and his wish to find his uncle fit into all of this? i have no idea and i don't really care jshfkds)
so that's about it :'D thank you for asking ♥

DMBJ Origins + State of the Union Explained
OK, so it occurs to me that many of you might not know of the humble origins of DMBJ and / or why it is the clusterfuck it is today (because it really is).
All externally linked references will be Chinese, and you’ll need to MTL them.
Origins:
So Xu Lei, or Nanpai Sanshu per his pen name, started DMBJ in 2006 as a fanfiction of another tomb-raiding series - Ghost Blows out the Light or 鬼吹灯 (Gui Chui Deng). Yes! DMBJ was a fanfiction! Which is why, if you’ve read the novels, the quality of work earlier on is rather amateur-ish.
Ghost Blows out the Light featured a trio of main characters  - Hu Bayi, Wang Pangzi, and Shirley Yang. A few interesting similarities to call out (SPOILERS FOR GCD I GUESS):
Wang Pangzi in DMBJ is pretty similar to the Wang Pangzi in GCD
They are a trio of main characters
Shirley Yang, the ‘Xiaoge’ equivalent, if you will, has a family curse
Shirley Yang and the main character, Hu Bayi, end up together
Here’s something I dug up about them.
Development / Divergence:
Keeping in mind that DMBJ was a fanfiction to start off with, it thus should not be too surprising the difference in literary quality between the two works, as well as subsequent divergence in development.
First, let me note - I love DMBJ, and I think the author has done a brilliant job. However, I can definitely also sense the more amateur nature and less... professional authorship associated with DMBJ.
Now - DMBJ began as a fanfiction, but eventually exploded in popularity in ways the author did not expect. He then added his own flavor to it entirely, and it has since diverged into a pretty different work entirely - on style, plot, subsequent character development, etc. I haven’t seen too much concern on plagiarism issues on that front. People seem to have accepted these as two works.
So for all the fanfic authors out there... how well do you plan out your stories? 🤣 And as you’re reading comments and reviews... how often have you tweaked things here and there to adapt to what the readers want? It seems Nanpai Sanshu was in the same boat. Unlike the author of GCD, who was more of a traditionally published author, he was writing something for the readers, so he’d adapt things as he went along based on what others liked.
The good - this is how Pingxie managed to become practically canon.
The bad - there’s a lot of plot holes that were dug and subsequently left unfilled.
Development of Pingxie:
Because of course this deserves its own callout. People joke that Nanpai Sanshu is a BL writer and it’s because... well... he pretty much is at this point. Given the fanfiction and less professional context of authorship, you can see how the development of Pingxie might have come about then. What the fans wanted was more Wu Xie and Xiaoge interactions, and so the author went with it.
Many people call it selling out, and attribute it all to the fact that he wants more money, which might be true. But I think, given how he started out, this may just be how he wanted to write. He wrote for fans to begin with, and so it’s not surprising he continued.
In my other post, I talked about the infamous ‘Ten Year Promise’ quote, which the author provided in an interview that summed up the Pingxie relationship. I haven’t yet gone through the whole interview in proper Chinese, but you definitely get a sense of how casual / direct he can be with the fans (especially fujoshi / Pingxie fans haha).
From the interview and subsequent development, it sounds like Nanpai Sanshu did originally want to end DMBJ on a rather tragic note, with Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling not having quite a happy ending. Wu Xie especially, he noted as having a particularly if not the most tragic of fates.
However, the power of fans have since prompted him to... well... not end it on such a miserable note. And hence the series continues, and the plot holes continue to grow...
And that’s why you might read / see things that don’t make sense. It’s not necessarily fanfiction being inconsistent with canon, or even dramas being inconsistent with canon... at this point, canon itself can be inconsistent with canon. 😭
State of the Union:
Nanpai Sanshu has suffered from depression / anxiety as a result of all this pressure 😞. He’s still writing sporadically, but there are starts and stops, with novels such as Tibetan Sea Flower and Tomb of the Sea both being unfinished. There are tons of plot gaps / holes still, and you can find a summary post of it all here.
He wrote ‘Ten Years Later’ likely as a response to all the demand by fans to have a Pingxie reunion, and in that story, Wu Xie comments that he no longer cares about finding out all the mysteries, that he would also become a person with ‘no past or future’, echoing Xiaoge’s own description of himself. 😊 Aww... but also, it’s Nanpai Sanshu’s way of telling the readers to forget about the mysteries of the Gate and all that. 😅
And now... he seems to be focused on milking the dramas for all they’re worth lol. Understandably, given he’s probably now trapped himself between a rock and a hard place in terms of plot details - he can no longer end Pingxie on a bad note, or really end it at all, but he also has no way forward with all the current plot lines.
