Mikey Goes To Oz
Tumblr media Tumblr media
<Time spent: 49 hours 17 minutes>
When Mikey takes some time away from a loud family squabble he accidentally ends up getting “flushed” down the sewers. This winds up sending him to the colorful land of Oz where he meets a good witch, a wicked witch, a brainless scarecrow, a heartless Tinman, a cowardess lion, and a powerful wizard, all disguised behind very familiar faces.
A canon adjacent spin off set before the season one finale but after they discover Splinter is Lou Jitsu
I wanted to fit each of the boys into their “you’ve had this all along” category. Leo isn’t brainless, in fact he’s pretty clever with a street smart, people reading ability on par with Donnie’s intelligence. Donnie isn’t heartless, he just has a tough time expressing his feelings. They are complex and unalgorithic but he can get just as excited or sad or angry as anyone, as much as he may deny it. Raph isn’t a coward, but being brave sometimes means admitting you’re scared and that you maybe don’t have all the answers. You dont have to be strong all the time and you don’t have to do it by yourself.
In the movie Dorothy’s journey home is also a representation of her running away. The important thing was to remember there were people who cared about her. Mikey is experiencing a similar phenomenon, wanting the escape the bad vibes in the lair. His “you’ve had it all along” is interesting because it is an object, since the Ruby kneepads could’ve taken him home the whole time. And sometimes getting home means going on a journey only to realize you never left.
I put April as Glinda because Glinda appears as a defender of the weak, and I see April in a similar light. Always willing to help and beat someone up if it is so required. Splinter as The Wizard of Oz represents Splinters own willingness to hide behind different personas, his running from the past and the pulling back of the curtain for Mikey in timeline. The Wizard grows through the movie, albeit quickly, and ends up leaving Oz to go home leaving his legacy with the scarecrow, the Tinman, and the lion. In this case the passing of the baton to his sons.
Meanwhile Draxum as the wicked witch felt much more how Mikey sees Draxum at this time in the show, mostly just an antagonistic force who wants something from them. Fun fact: I imagine throughout this dream, Draxum is uninterested in being the wicked witch but is pressed into it via plot. Hence his disinterest in being “melted.”
Additional characters not pictured: Big Mama as the Wicked Witch of the East (those were her Ruby kneepads!!) and Todd as the Mayor of Munchkin Land. If you can think of more, feel free to leave them in the comments or tags.

Mannn I really wish they had done something with Ryan's youtube channel back in S11/12. I would have loved if he kept uploading videos during his travels on the TARDIS (like a video diary), from a corner or a little removed from the action (perhaps so he'd not give away his location/time period to anyone watching, perhaps because The Doctor doesn't want to be caught on camera because that can cause problems).
But since you don't get that many quiet moments travelling with 13 you'd always have stuff happening just out of shot, or out of focus in the back of shot. Graham and Yaz would sometimes be vaguely visible but you'd only ever hear bits of 13's voice.
Because then imagine using that premise to use those youtube videos for
a) little extra previews for new episodes/series (and you'd be able to freeze-frame and try to figure out where Ryan is or who the fam is running away from or whatever)
and
b) you could play with the idea that in-universe Ryan's videos start getting popular, particularly with alien conspiracy groups like in Love and Monsters, who gradually start to notice stuff in Ryan's videos aren't quite right: The logos on the boxes in the massive warehouse Ryan's blogging from don't correspond with any online retailer anyone knows. Or that Ryan seems to be filming from inside buildings he absolutely should not have access to. Or something falls in the background and the gravity somehow seems odd. Some people comment on his videos about this and Ryan tries to play it off as "Ah... one of my friends is really into VFX and likes to edit my videos". But then it really gets crazy after Spyfall part II when his face appears everywhere and Ryan just starts frantically deleting all the comments people leave on his videos. Though some time later he'd upload a video like "my friend is not doing okay and they're hiding something from us but i can't get them to talk, I think we need to stage an intervention" and you'd think it's about Ryan's friend from home but it's just 13 being 13.
and
c) building on this, when Jack catches up with the Fam in Fugitive of the Judoon, it turns out he managed to track the location of the TARDIS down because he's subscribed to Ryan's youtube channel. (of course no one in the back of Ryan's video's has ever referred to the disembodied female voice as "Doctor" so Jack still doesn't realise which person is The Doctor)
and
d) In the run up to Doctor Who Redacted, Ryan's last video gets a comment from one of the Blue Box Files podcast girls asking for an interview and one week later his whole youtube channel disappears

i loveeee being in a fandom where the work of media in question is complete. it's finished. it's done.
we don't have to wait around for the next book or watch as the series gets dragged out and beaten like a dead horse for a neverending amount of cash flow.
the creator had a vision, he stuck to it, he executed it, and now we have "the work"—an established body of canon which we can talk about and discuss, without having to say "unless this gets changed or modified in future installments." there is a set number of short stories, a set number of books. asides from the comments of the author himself said in interviews and opinions remarked upon in essays and other works, there is nothing more we have to be prepared to risk everything on. the story is complete. it has been told. everything we know has already been written down.
i know some, or more likely, most people cannot stand it when there are no new or upcoming additions to the work of a fandom, nothing to "look forward to." but i love it. please don't give me any more, this was more than enough to deal with, i'm still working on this, honestly. rather, what i'm "looking forward to" are interpretations, analysis, and other work from fans from which we can generate—ourselves—ongoing discussions and arguments which will last us forever.
i don't want hype. i want love.

hmm. mulder - harry ambrose parallels actually. i think there's something there. especially if you look at mulder and how he was with lucy householder from oubliette and harry with cora tanetti from season one. and how harry tells his soon to be ex wife, with exhausted bewilderment, i know you don't think i'm trying, but i'm trying so hard all the time.
and yknow. the guilt complex and masochistic tendencies. willingness to fling himself anywhere or lie buried in a box in the ground if it means he might get to the truth and a moment of connection.
something to dig into there maybe

obsessed with how wild the spy romance drama is, 10/10 love your au! loving the hilarity of Karkat Knowing It All to boot. he has to be clawing his walls trying not to say anything but living for the gossip (that he can't tell)
HONESTLYYY like Karkat is very much having a Time. he's the only one who can give them advice and he cant even bitch about it, even to Gamzee. he's gotta keep his mouth shut and just Watch.
which is partially why i ended up deciding that John's gotta be the one to find out all the identities second, because I feel like as Agent Cestus/Rose starts really fucking with the weird polycule/love quintangle/weird gay enemy thing like all the 'troll' girls have with each other(?) he's gonna be about ready to Scream. he's gonna be Incandescent. NONE of these people are surviving the winter. now shut up and sit down Egbert because he's getting out the whiteboard

while bridgerton is classic regency romance, i’m also really partial to mary balogh. her westcott, bedwyn, and survivor’s club series are all really good
I'll admit, I've only read one Bridgerton book. I mostly liked it until the end when she tried to deal with trauma and it felt very clunky and poorly done. It was the second book, with Kate & Anthony, who I... didn't hate like I did in the show 😂
Funnily enough, Mary Balogh wrote the book I just finished. Someone to Love from The Wescott series, and you know what. I actually NEED to talk about this book so I'm using this golden opportunity to ramble and I'm sorry.
I'm gonna preface by saying that besides these two points, I very much enjoyed the plot and was very engaged by it
Let's get this out of the way first: very often I come across issues in romance books where something makes me real uncomfortable. In this one, it was the main dude finding some mystical Chinese man to teach him kung fu and make him all powerful or whatever. Like... YIKES. And this was published in 2016
Now that that's out of the way, the thing I REALLY need to talk about (though much less serious/important).
So the main guy's whole thing is that he's small? Like he gets teased as a kid for looking like a girl and he's weak, blah bah blah. And that doesn't magically go away with some growth spurt, which is kind of nice! I appreciate what the author was trying to do, the male love interest doesn't have to be crazy tall & built to be sexy. Great message! But I think she just... overdid it or something? She just talks about how small he is CONSTANTLY (he's still taller than the female protagonist, so I think this is maybe why it sticks out so much? It's always from the female's POV saying how small he is (but don't worry, he's sexily lean & powerful with his kung fu muscles)). She makes mention of it in seemingly every paragraph as we lead up to the sex scene (which was disappointing and boring and awkward, I have been ruined by fanfic smut). The female protagonist is also described by the man as very stiff/proper/no frills/etc. So by the time we get to the already awkward sex scene, all I can picture is Lord Farquaad with Jaime Lannister hair trying to sensually fuck this girl who just LAYS THERE stiff as a board, and I lost my actual shit and laughed my way through the wedding night scene
*to be fair to this book, I take medical marijuana every night to help me sleep and it uh really does make everything funnier & more ridiculous. some of my best fic ideas & my most rambling tumblr posts are because of it (like now!)
**sorry to anyone who was into show Anthony Bridgerton but dear god was he a misogynistic ass and I stg that actor took the Joey Tribbiani school of smell the fart acting. no I will not be taking any notes

late-hellblazer (pre-milligan) constantine makes me go feral because like. you ever have an omniscient guy who may or may not be Thee judas iscariot tell you "what you have blighted you cannot heal. what you have broken will not mend" and then have to go on living your life after that? what do you do with that? the closest you'll ever get to confirmation of the message drilled into your skull since you were old enough to understand language, from a source whose purpose is to maintain the balance of good and evil in the world, that you are a curse and the only thing you can do well is harm? how do you live with that?
the answer is, he does what he's always done best: puts up the V and says "fuck you, that's bullshit." burns his life at both ends to make things right. heals the blight, even if only by taking it on himself. mends things, even though the effort costs him everything: his memories, his friends, his sister. fuck your curse. fuck your rules. that condemnation will live with him forever, but all he is ever going to do with it is fight it. fix it. mend it.

nothing more insulting than purposefully creating a female character w really small boobs than to have someone draw her having a huge rack btw
don't do that shit
women out here exist with naturally tiny chests and are tired of it being deemed a bad or unappealing thing especially because it is neither bad nor unappealing and also 25% of men [sorry, no research for this on wlw unfortunately] who like women prefer small chests. there is nothing wrong with this as a body type and often when a character is created this way it's (: on (: purpose (: so (: don't (: change (: it (:
