Hi guys it’s been a while since I’ve made one of these but this is Vicki and she owns the ONE and ONLY lesbian bar/ restaurant in Florida, The Lady’s Room, and it’s at risk of closing. She’s tried getting a loan but the banks are refusing despite her good credit. I’ve made a few posts like these that got some great traction, I would love to see Vicki get the support she needs too 🙏🏼
Please consider donating to her GoFundMe!
Currently she’s at $12,203 of her $100k goal (Tuesday April 18, 2023).
Please spread! If you can’t donate atm the next best thing is to boost.
Video transcription under cut
VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION:
Vicki, a butch lesbian, wearing a black jersey sporting rainbow stripes and embroidery reading “love is love” across the left breast, is leaning against a counter with her tattooed arms crossed. A pride flag hangs behind her in what is presumably her bar. The piercings on her face ride the knit of her concerned brow as she speaks. “A month, maybe two, then it’s on the market. I don’t have a choice; I’ve sold all my properties, I’ve emptied my 401k; I’ve tried banks, I’ve tried finance companies…”
“I went in, I said, you know, I wanna take out a loan to invest in my bar, and they said, we can’t do it. Okay, I have 7+ credit score, I own my cars. I own my home… what the Hell.”
“They won’t touch it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a lesbian bar, but that’s what it felt like.”
The caption “We have one month to save Florida’s only lesbian bar!” is overlaid the video for its duration.
End transcription.
(This is the first time I’ve written a video transcription, I tried to keep in mind what I would find helpful but please lmk what I could do better if you have any suggestions)

man I am not ready to go to a lesbian bar. the moment I see a true to god dyke without the barrier of a telephone screen I will salivate so much I will then melt on the sticky floor and that is the last people will see of me. an honorable death nonetheless

In honoring our theme of Renewal for this edition, we wanted to dedicate 10% of all of our proceeds towards saving the last lesbian bar in Florida: The Lady’s Room in Largo. The owner, Vicki Gibson, has been hoping, dreaming, and working to build this space since the 1970s.
As of now, the fundraiser goal of $100,000 needed to keep the bar open has only reached around $40,000 in donations. We, at Beloved, want to honor the spirit of Renewal by contributing what we can from our own sales to keeping brick and mortar lesbian spaces alive. Our hope is to help renew a pre-existing lesbian establishment with our donations. We want to do whatever we can to preserve safe spaces for lesbians, particularly in environments like the American South, where LGBT rights are currently under direct attack. While our sales alone will not be able to raise all the money needed, our hope is that the project itself will be able to help spread word and raise awareness for the preservation of lesbian culture and spaces!
You can learn more donate directly here!

Visited a friend this weekend and went to a lesbian bar for the first time ever last night and it was so fucking fun! One of FIFTEEN left in the entire country. They had an all-king drag show that was super funny and women were making out and grinding on each other on the dance floor left and right. Huge range of patrons from young femme lesbians to a group of old butches that showed up in camo and flannel.
There were two straight couples there (? No idea why) but the energy was such that it was pretty clear that if the dudes got creepy they would be tossed out quick. Most men there were clearly gay and there with their lesbian friends. There were a couple of creepy looking TiMs that hung back and didn’t dance but I’d say the clientele was 95% female and it was incredible.
I went with a straight friend and even she said she had a lot of fun just being able to drink and dance and socialize in a mostly female space. Everyone was super nice and fun and security and bartenders were mostly butch women.
The bar is lesbian-owned by a couple that have been running it since the 90s and they were there last night and super awesome and lesbian-positive, you can tell keeping the space open is a real passion project for them.
Anyways, if you’re ever in Atlanta, check out My Sister’s Room!

TikTok is discussing the concept of Straight Men™️ being problems in Queer Bars and like… wow those comment sections…
I said as a trans man I would never be comfortable going into a lesbian bar because that’s Not Where I Belong and suddenly I was barred from Buffalo Wild Wings (???) because tiktok user 28847392974 decided that it’s a straight bar? And proceeded to harass me about it? Like bro that’s not what we’re talking about? Can you read the room?

The Lady’s Room, the only lesbian bar in the state of Florida, is in need of help so they can stay open. I saw a Tik Tok about it earlier, but I have a much larger following here, so thought I’d share their go fund me. Help keep one of only a handful of lesbian bars left in the USA open!

THE PREMIER LADIES OF THE SFV – PART 2 OF 2
Beverly Shaw (ca. 1910-May 26, 1990) was an American nightclub singer who made a name for herself performing at lesbian venues throughout California in the 1940s and 1950s.  Originally from Los Angeles, she began her career in San Francisco singing torch songs at the lesbian bar Mona’s 440 and the Chi-Chi Club.  During WWII, she drove a taxi by day to support herself and sang as Mona’s headliner at night.
Shaw moved back to Los Angeles in the early 1950s and began singing at such venues as the Flamingo Club in Hollywood and Larry Potter’s Supper Club in Studio City.  In 1957, she and her wife, Betty, took over ownership of Club Laurel, a nightclub located at 12319 Ventura Blvd in Studio City.  Featuring herself as the star attraction, Shaw transformed the club into a popular upscale gay night spot catering to the film community.  She took her style cues from Marlene Dietrich, performing in tailor-made suits and wearing a bow tie.  Patrons were greeted upon entrance with a photograph of herself captioned “Miss Beverly Shaw, Sir!” – a catchphrase she lifted from a Groucho Marx interview with Tallulah Bankhead in which he called her “sir.”  The club’s matchbooks were similarly captioned.
In the late 1950s, Shaw recorded an album entitled “Songs Tailored To Your Taste,” which she released on her own label, “Club Laurel Records.”  After divesting her interest in Club Laurel in 1971, she continued performing at venues throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, including Club Bayou, Linda’s Little Log Cabin, Joani Presents, and the Oxford Inn.  She died of cancer in 1990 at the age of 80.
And what became of Club Laurel?  After Shaw’s departure, it continued under new ownership for a while as “Jay’s Club Laurel.”  During this time it transitioned from a lesbian establishment to a gay male bar and remained as such through 1980, operating under such monikers as “Neworld” (1973-74), “The Frat House” (1974-75), “The Farm House” (1976), and “Boots” (1977-80).  Many mainstream businesses have since occupied 12319 Ventura Blvd.  Most recently it has served as a mattress store, a sweat lodge, and currently a pilates studio – all of which seem fitting uses for a space that originally opened as one of the San Fernando Valley’s first LGBTQ+ establishments!
Patrons of Club Laurel recall Beverly Shaw and the venue fondly:
“It was a real gay club – not just full of caricatures.  It seemed out of its time and place to me.  You saw a lot of movie stars and that made it seem even more unreal.  I guess you could call Beverly Shaw a role model of sorts, but we didn’t have terms like that then.  It gave me the first idea that gays could have a place like that.”
“We couldn’t believe the Club Laurel. It was fabulous. Here was this uptown club unlike anything in the way of a gay club that we had ever seen. You knew right then this was different. It was our first time except for Ptown that we had ever been totally at ease and comfortable in a gay place. You didn’t need to keep one ear checked for breaking glass in a place like Club Laurel. At the time, I remember wondering how she did it or what it cost her.”
