So, I've never liked the idea of plot armor. It feels like a lazy way out, from a writing perspective. It gets so much worse, however, when it's used in video games, particularly where antagonists (I hesitate to call them all villains) are concerned. We see it so often these days. I recently played through the Mass Effect legendary collection, and the character Kai Leng is a huge offender in this regard. He's not even the worst, but he's fresh in my memory right now, so it sticks in my craw, as my grandmother used to say. So many times, not only did I beat him, but without his ridiculous plot armor, I would've killed him outright. And I wasn't allowed to. Playing through starfield right now and I'm seeing it here as well, although I don't want to elaborate. Just, it's there. And I hate it.
I know. I know it's hard to write not only a good story but an interesting way for a villain that needs to still be alive at the end more and more ways to survive encounters with the hero. I get it. But damn it, that is what I want. I want more creativity when it comes to these scenarios. And I promise you, I will show so much appreciation for that creativity. I'll never shut up about how good of a job you did. I swear I will. I'll shower you with praise. I'll kiss you square on the mouth. Whatever will make this a reality.

Am i the only one who doesn't get what Wen sees in uncle Jim 😭 Don't get me wrong i love the show, and i LOVE Heart and Liming, and i quite like Wen's character too, but Jim is just so cold and grumpy and never smiles and i just don't get why Wen is so obsessed with him, like sure the story with his ex is sad but like Heart has a way more traumatic backstory but he's not an ass to people, or Liming whose parents literally left him with an uncle that only fights with him is not half as bitter... I just wish they would have made Jim a bit more likable, or at least relatable like Alan. Sorry for ranting, just needed to get that off my chest 😂

like for one you’re just wrong. on multiple accounts. for one, jim DOES smile. evidence:
isn’t it beautiful? but i get what you mean, it’s not often we get a jim smile. but the man also has a shitton on his plate! he can barely pay his bills, has the diner (which is his LIVELIHOOD) threatening to be shut down, and he has a kid he has to take care of on top of all that. a kid that’s not even his own, mind you.
and when you say he’s an ass to people, you mean when he chose not to pay his car insurance and instead bought leng a gold necklace to use for praew’s dowry? you mean when he refused to use gaipa’s feelings for him to his advantage and returned the title deed because of it, despite the fact he COULD have gotten a loan out of it and saved his business? you mean when he didn’t hesitate to let wen stay with him after he moved out of alan’s despite the fact that jim had made it clear from the beginning he didn’t want complicated and yet wen continued to be persistent in fitting himself into jim’s life while KNOWING he was still living with his possessive ex? no, you’re right. he’s so cold and uncaring and doesn’t give a fuck about the people around him. clearly.
as for li ming and jim, i’ve already made a post about this, but everything jim does in terms of li ming is his attempts at protecting him. i’m not saying he’s going about everything in the right way, lord knows he’s not, but NO character in this show does. like i said, wen continued to pursue jim despite the fact that he hadn’t completely cut things off with alan. alan chose to confront them both at the worst possible time because he was fueled by jealousy and anger, he pushed wen and tried to go for jim, too. li ming continues to go behind jim’s back and put himself at risk of pissing off people much more powerful than him. leng and praew are starting a family they didn’t originally plan for without a lot of money. the only characters you can argue haven’t don’t anything wrong are heart and gaipa!
the point is. this show is great because the characters are real people. they’re messy, they do the wrong thing, they hurt the people they love. but at the end of the day, they love each other and are there for each other. that’s the whole point! and jim isn’t any different just because you don’t find him likable enough.

This is gonna be a rant post, so don't mind me
Was legit scrolling through TikTok, watching some actors have fun and shit but the comment section literally makes me want to yeet these bl fans off the app and outside so they can touch some fucking grass.
Yes, this is about OhmNanon. Look, I get it, we'll always miss it and treasure what we HAD, but the levels some people go to, to just mention Ohm on one of Nanon's tiktoks, that mind you...have literally NOTHING to do with Ohm, and basically demanding them to get back together just makes me steam. I don't mean to sound harsh but GET OVER IT. This is fucking why things turned out the way they did and their so called "fans" need to get over themselves and stop trying to force them together. Ohm is literally happy with Leng and I support them. Nanon is happy with acting in non bl dramas and focusing on his singing career, which I support as well.
The two are legit happier when they're not forced together for our selfish wants. And the same goes with Gemini and Fourth as well.
On one of Gem's tiktoks, who had a really pretty girl he did his song with, doing a dance with him, people kept being rude to her and demanding he be with Fourth instead. Are they legit TRYING to make another OhmNanon situation happen because I swear, if they keep it up, that could/can and would/will happen.

The best friend and I played a bunch of Mass Effect 3 over the last few weeks! The things I remember most clearly are Thessia, Leviathan, Sanctuary, Horizon, the Citadel DLC, and the initial return to [redacted].
Long ramble about all of it:
My best friend had me choose the companions for the run to the temple on Thessia, and naturally I chose our beloved Liara and problematic fave Javik. I wasn't glad to see it fall (quite the contrary), but it seemed a bit apropos that the asari leadership's various choices wrt the war came back to bite them. Still, it was really sad, esp since it's the only time we really saw it and Liara was really upset.
...all the more because we brought Javik and he kept interrupting her explanations to be like "all your religious beliefs are gifts we gave to your people's ancestors before they figured out writing." It was a lot for her, but I did feel a touch of annoyance at what seemed a bit of an unspoken assumption that this might happen to other people's homes, but not hers. Very asari, to be sure. And I like it as a subtle aspect of her character—not a criticism of the game there, just a sidenote, I guess.
Kai Leng showing up was just ... /sigh. I don't really get what his deal is beyond being Cerberus and hating Shepard a lot for some unknown reason. Eventually we do see the past!Illusive Man comparing him to Shepard (in a positive way!), so maybe it's something to do with that, idk. He feels pretty underwritten to me compared to the rest of the major cast, who are generally super vivid (I mean, I love background characters like Westmoreland!). So I'm just irritated when he shows up and disrupts interesting things.
The Leviathan DLC was a really good horror episode taken in its own right, but as part of the wider game, I'm not sure. I kind of ... didn't want to know more about the Reapers? The sequence was fantastic (especially down in the bottom of the sea!), yet the less mysterious the Reapers get, the less engaged I am by them. Whatever the hell is going on with Cerberus and the Illusive Man is a lot more compelling to me at this point.
Speaking of whom, Sanctuary was just what the fuck?! from beginning to end. I've always been suspicious of the whispers about it, but I didn't guess that they were transforming refugees into husks to experiment on, you know? Damn. Miranda was not exaggerating about her father's callousness even a little.
Speaking of Miranda, she is probably at the top of my problematic ME characters list, and ... look. Okay. I know the mechanics of the game suggest she's straight. To me she has the most intense bi energy of just about any human in the game. I love (female) Shepard/Liara, a lot, but I just feel like there's a ton of UST between our Shepard and Miranda, all the more by the end of the Citadel DLC. I'll just leave that there.
After that, it was extremely cathartic to wreck the Cerberus base on Horizon with EDI. No gods no masters <3
And then we got to finally kill Kai Leng for good. Asshole. Blahblah, more villain monologues from the younger-looking Illusive Man (/suspicion). I suspect he's in cahoots with Harbinger or something and thinks he's actually the one in control.
Then there was the Citadel DLC, which I've heard a lot of great things about. Early on, I wasn't actually sure I'd like it as much as other people do—self-referential humor and stakes-lowering banter are not to my taste in general, and there were several times in the earlier parts that it didn't quite work for me (not because it was bad, but I just don't like that kind of thing by and large). I did laugh at the "I should go" jokes, though!
We did it with Wrex-Liara and then Garrus-Liara, which felt very apropos to the storyline, since the whole deal with the clone is that she has all of Shepard's technical skills but overlooks the importance of Shepard as team player and friend. And Wrex, Garrus, and Liara specifically go way back with Shepard.
When the clone was going on her villain rants about how she has everything Shepard did, she can do everything Shepard can, I was like "but she can't do everything Liara and Garrus can ... oh. This is about the power of friendship!" And it was, in a really charming way.
I did think Brooks was suspect as hell the whole time, so that was validating.
The clone's obsession with being The Real Shepard and having the grand mystique and galactic stature and all of that did highlight something interesting to me. I'd read an argument that ME1 is actually the best ME game, and one of the reasons in that argument is that ME1 Shepard is ... cool, but not nearly the superstar legend she becomes later on.
And Shepard's super special awesome greatness is hammered in a lot through ME2&3. I'm not sure that's actually worse than being scrappier, in terms of some artistic merit kind of thing, but the DLC is so reliant on Shepard's mystique that it got me thinking again about how easily this could become really annoying.
Like, I've loved many special or chosen male characters, but the idea of male badass Shepard seems just incredibly tedious to me. I'm not sure I could buy into this except with the pretty specific scenario we have of a lesbian Shepard who came up through a hard childhood on the streets of Earth.
Anyway, I absolutely adored the end of the clone arc (Garrus and Liara pulling the real Shepard up ;_;) and then the entire rest of the DLC, except the pull-up thing with James (very tiresome mechanically and he's my least fave of the ME3 squad). Miranda and Jack semi-reconciling was really adorable and I loved all the bizarre inter-character dynamics at the party. Also, Traynor winning against an asari named Polgara made me cackle. And my absolute most hated from ME2, Zaeed, was kind of delightful. Zaeed vs The Claw was just ... jafdkk;jadfjk;a
And Glyph's little bowtie! Incredible all around.
Oh, and the little date with Liara was super sweet. I loved that it stopped where it did, just that image of them embracing. It's great.
It was nice to see them seriously together even later, of course. And we got back to Earth! I was incredibly tired at that point, so my main thought was that the imagery of the united galactic fleet was essentially what The Rise of Skywalker tried and failed to do, but it was fantastic here, especially after everything we've done to get (almost) everyone together. (We did basically tell the salarians to go fuck themselves wrt the genophage.)
London looks suitably dreadful and we'd just gone around and talked to Anderson and then essentially everyone. Pretty much everyone continually brought up how awesome Shepard is, again, which reinforced my sense that this could be really annoying but is very nice for lesbian Shepard, and in any case, it feels like it's going somewhere now. We'll see where exactly that is!

I'm not someone who makes friends easily!!! Like. I just. Never really learned how to do that??? So I have maybe a handful of homies I know will be around when shit sucks. And you're one of 'em! Like, I know you've been processing your own stuff over the last few years. You're so resilient... you're so down to earth. Really, I don't ~vibe~ with people often but you are definitely one of the bright spots in my internet life. I just love you as a friend so much and want you to know that. You are handling your shit the best way you can and I know it's tough, but you're still such a wonderful lil Ben.
I'm glad you let me rant and rave about shit, too. Like. Gossip bad but we all drink the tea, and I enjoy hearing ur perspective on things. You think things thru and don't just buy into what someone says for the sake of it.

Even if I don't agree with your rants, I always atleast understand where you're coming from; I think there's a lot of ways our brains function similarly, and so it's easy to talk to you about things, especially if I need to check if I'm being rational about something I'm upset about haha
I know we haven't really struck our "thing" with RP yet -- maybe Shane and Elliott will be that -- but I'm glad we still stuck around eachother as friends (I supposed we have Raive to thank for that!), and you've been such a good supportive pillar in my internet life since Leng died and my whole life fell apart, and I want you to know I love and appreciate you for that.
-- A lot of people especially from the Resi fandom did not stick around after Leng's passing, and so the ones who did are precious to me.

I have to go with the Mass Effect and Mass Effect Andromeda fandom - mostly because I found some incredible friends in this fandom, and I think I really grew as a writer. I love the fic and gift exchanges, and I love how happy people are to help each other.
15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
I have a not so secret love of Kai Leng x femShep, especially super dark fics where he's obsessed with her, stalks her, and essentially cannot stop himself from tormenting her to get attention from her. I could reads fics about them and their messed up relationship for ever! You just know they'd hate fuck eventually and it would be very very hot.
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
Just one? Lol. I suppose I'm most proud of Through A Mirror Darkly, my Subject Zero Kaidan fic. The idea started out because of a fic I read where Kaidan essentially stayed at JumpZero and got super messed up and turned evil, and then I saw LeFlay's art of a SZ Kaidan and ... I just had to write something. I love the idea of a bad and brooding Kaidan who isn't evil ... but comes close.
40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?
Hmm, writing summaries? I'm so bad at that and I always struggle. Other than that, I struggle to cut down on words and not be so purple prose-ish and overly wordy.
45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?
Oh gosh. That's hard. Possibly it's Snowed In by @tlcinbflo or a short Shega oneshot by @juleshawke that I've lost the name of, but which completely inspired my love of Shega.
51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
I love my friends who write fic and how creative they are. So that's my gushing. I genuinely have so many talented friends who write.
Buuut I dislike this weird puritanical view that seems to have risen up in fandoms and tumblr that writers must believe in and condone the things they write about, no matter how bad they are. It's such a stupid way to think and it's very harmful.

Very unpopular opinion but I’m finding jimwen to be the most boring part of mlc, they’re both mad annoying atm. Like Jim saying “you’re already poor and now you wanna be gay too?” To li meng. First of all pot calling the kettle black, second of all wtaf I understand he’s trying to prevent heart break of whatever but actually I don’t understand he’s being a dick stfu. I find heart and li Ming and Alan to be so much more interesting and I’m only watching the show for them atp and kaipa. It’s a pity cause I was really looking forward to them but maybe it’s too early to completely disregard them 🤔👁️👁️

I thought everyone felt this way LMAO. for me the best part of the show is really the family dynamic between everyone around jim, but jimwen are fucking boring. wen is trying way too hard FOR A MAN, like... side eye 😒 as for jim saying that fucking shit to li ming, I almost jumped the gun but for now I'm withholding the rant that almost spurted right out of my mouth bc idk why I have a feeling like the scene is actually gonna play differently, but if it doesn't I'll deffo commit murder bc HOW are u gonna perpetuate the same oppression that you're facing onto your nephew??? I'll probably explode lol <3 li ming & heart, though? literally slay so fucking hard, one of the best side ships EVER, I'd literally die for them, they're so wholesome & unproblematic ;_; I love gaipa & feel so bad for him but also the dude will be fine, I just hope he gets a bf eventually bc he deserves it. also I wanna see more of leng & praew tbh, I feel like they're underdeveloped & need to steal some screentime from jimwen kocijduisijxudhs! as for alan, I think he's an asshole in his own rights but also feel bad for him, also obviously I adore first so I want more of him on my screen <3 about you saying it's too early to disregard jimwen, bestie we're 3/4 through the show LMAO. I really don't know how they could get any better :')))
