@asongofstarkandtargaryen I have found about a new upcoming horror series, Romancero.
This is the info I have found until now:
The cast of the series will be led by Sasha Cócola (Techo y comida, Los hombres de Paco) and the Serbian actress Elena Matic (Kineski zid, Bon voyage). The little that is known about the synopsis is related to its characters, since they are the ones who will give life to Jordán and Cornelia. He is not a boy and he is not a man and she is a girl whose childhood has been stolen. Turned into some strange teenagers, they decide to change their lives and flee from the desert of southern Spain, pushed by circumstances. In their escape from a cruel Andalusia, as real as it is mythical, they come across demons, witches and blood drinkers.
They are accompanied on this adventure by Belén Cuesta (La trinchera infinita, Paquita Salas, La llamada, Cristo y Rey, La casa de papel, Vis a Vis, El Aviso), Ricardo Gómez (El sustituto, La ruta, Cuéntame cómo pasó, Vivir sin permiso, La Casa entre los cáctus, 1898: Los últimos de Filipinas), Guillermo Toledo (Los favoritos de Midas, Crimen perfecto, 7 vidas, Historias de Lavapiés, Juana La Loca, Black is Beltza), the Argentinian actress Julieta Cardinali (Ecos de un crimen, Maradona: Sueño Bendito, Los ricos no piden permiso, Valentín, Carta a Eva) and Alba Flores (La casa de papel, Las cartas perdidas, El tiempo entre costuras, Vis a Vis, Sagrada familia). In addition, to complete the information about the series, Romancero will be set on locations in Almería and Madrid, two of the cities that host the filming of the fiction, in different natural settings in the province of Almería, while the interiors will be filmed in Madrid.
Jordán and Cornelia are two helpless youngsters on the run from the forces of the law, powerful supernatural creatures, and themselves. The series, which has just started filming, will consist of six episodes of 30 minutes each and its action takes place in a single night.

"With echoes of the famous Romancero Gitano, a poetic work by Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, June 5 of 1898 -  Víznar, Granada, August 18 of 1936), it seems that the references of Romancero will be very different from each other. Comics, Gothic literature, the stories of witches, ghosts and creatures, the poetry of Federico García Lorca or esotericism, all of this in the enveloping setting of a desert and cruel South, where the clichés of rural Spain and more cañí they coexist with supernatural creatures, violence, revenge, redemption and love”, comments the information provided. "We love that Romancero is a horror series with a strong local point of view, an approach that allows us to offer a different and updated vision of our traditions and culture," says María José Rodríguez, Head of Spanish Originals, Amazon Studios. "We want to offer the public unique stories and different voices that resonate and impact. We are convinced that Romancero will not leave anyone indifferent," says Rodríguez.
"We are very happy to work with Fernando Navarro and Tomás Peña on a project as distinctive as Romancero," James Farrell, Head of International Originals, Amazon Studios, told the press. On behalf of THE MEDIAPRO STUDIO, the producer is Laura Fdz. Espeso and Javier Méndez, Fernando Navarro, Alejandro Florez and Maya Maidagan serve as executive producers. Everyone will be looking for the new original Spanish youth horror series that will replace the gap left by El Internado: Las Cumbres in the new Prime Video catalog. Prime Video has announced its upcoming Spanish original series “Romancero,” a fast-paced horror story with supernatural overtones written by the horror author and screenwriter Fernando Navarro (Venus, Verónica) and directed by Manson collective member Tomás Peña, in which It will be his first foray into a fiction production, after directing video clips for artists such as Rosalía, C. Tangana, Katy Perry, Raw Alejandro, Bad Gyal or The Prodigy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I find it very interesting that Romancero Gitano is a source of inspiration for a series, another work of Lorca was adapted some years ago into a film, La Novia (based on the play Bodas de Sangre).
The book is composed of 18 poems: Romance de la luna, luna, Preciosa y el aire, Reyerta, Romance sonámbulo, La monja gitana, La casada infiel, Romance de la pena negra, San Miguel, San Rafael, San Gabriel, Prendimiento de Antoñito el Camborio en el camino de Sevilla, Muerte de Antoñito el Camborio, Muerto de amor, Romance del emplazado, Romance de la Guardia Civil española, Martirio de Santa Olalla, Burla de don Pedro a caballo and Thamar y Amnón.
So, maybe the stories of the characters are inspired on the poems.
It was published in 1928, so maybe the series will be set on the 1920's, although it hasn't been told any concrete period, I don't know if they will through a modern day setting.
Romancero Gitano isn't a horror book but maybe some elements of the poems like metaphors or symbolisms could be taken for some kind of magical elements (and some of the metaphors are a bit strange due to surrealism influences, although surrealism is more a thing from Poeta en Nueva York, writen between the years 1929-30, published in 1940 in Mexico). The other inspiración for the series is Gothic literature, so that would be the source of supernatural elements.
Like, the Romancero book mainly are stories (some of them tragical) about Andalusian Romani people and their culture, and also deals with the marginalization and oppresion suffered by the Romanis because of the Civil Guard (the Spanish Gendarmerie).
Taking a look at the cast for Romancero, Alba Flores is Romani. She's from the Flores family, a famous Andalusian Romani family of artists, in fact Alba's grandmother was the flamenco dancer and singer Lola Flores.
An interesting aspect from Romancero Gitano is that Lorca mixed elements from the literary movements from the early 20th century and the style of poetry from the past, like the "Romancero viejo", that is a collection of anonymous poems from oral tradition from the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages that were later published in books between the 15-16th centuries. Then there's the "Romancero nuevo", that is the total of the writen poetry of known authors since the 16th century (although it's common to focus on the poetry from the 16-17th centuries mainly).
Talking about symbolism, these are the main symbols used by Lorca in Romancero Gitano (although some of them are very common in other of his works):
• Metals (knives, anvils, rings...): the life of Romani people and death.
• Air or wind: tragedy, male eroticism aggressive and violent.
• Mirror: home and sedentary life.
• Water: (in motion) life, (at rest) stagnant passion or death.
• Well: stagnant passion or death
• Horse: unbridled passion that leads to death. It could also mean virility, wild passion or freedom.
• Moon: It is the most used by Lorca, it appears 218 times. Its symbolism depends on how it appears. If it is red it means painful death; black, simply death; big means hope; pointy, has an erotic connotation. I could also mean femininity or sensuality.
• Rooster: sacrifice and destruction of the Romani
• The Civil Guard: they represent authority, therefore symbols of destruction and death over the Romani
• Alcohol: negativity.
• Milk: the natural.
• Wicker rod: lordship, nobility, dignity and elegance of the Romani
•Color green: death. It could also represent love frustration, forbidden desire and male sexual instinct
• Color black: death.
• Color white: life, light.
• Roses: blood
• Rider: omen of death
• Fish: associated with sexuality and dawn
• Blood: sexual instinct and omen of death
I wonder if this symbols will be shown in some kind of way.
For example the symbol of the green color meaning death can be noted in the poem Romance sonámbulo, like in this case the green that is constantly used for descriving the woman or her environment means that is going to die/is dying, and she couldn't meet her lover again. Then there's other symbols like the moon that means death too and the aljibe (a water cistern) is water at rest, so it could also mean death. It could be that the woman got drown in the aljibe, and maybe the civil guards are involved or responsible for her death.
And also metals could be a death symbol, and the eyes of the woman are described as "cold silver", maybe a way of saying that her eyes are grey.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
ella sueña en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Bajo la luna gitana,
las cosas le están mirando
y ella no puede mirarlas.
*
Verde que te quiero verde.
Grandes estrellas de escarcha,
vienen con el pez de sombra
que abre el camino del alba.
La higuera frota su viento
con la lija de sus ramas,
y el monte, gato garduño,
eriza sus pitas agrias.
¿Pero quién vendrá? ¿Y por dónde...?
Ella sigue en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
soñando en la mar amarga.
  *
- Compadre, quiero cambiar
mi caballo por su casa,
mi montura por su espejo,
mi cuchillo por su manta.
Compadre, vengo sangrando,
desde los montes de Cabra.
- Si yo pudiera, mocito,
ese trato se cerraba.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
- Compadre, quiero morir
decentemente en mi cama.
De acero, si puede ser,
con las sábanas de holanda.
¿No ves la herida que tengo
desde el pecho a la garganta?
- Trescientas rosas morenas
lleva tu pechera blanca.
Tu sangre rezuma y huele
alrededor de tu faja.
Pero yo ya no soy yo,
ni mi casa es ya mi casa.
- Dejadme subir al menos
hasta las altas barandas,
dejadme subir, dejadme,
hasta las verdes barandas.
Barandales de la luna
por donde retumba el agua.
  *
Ya suben los dos compadres
hacia las altas barandas.
Dejando un rastro de sangre.
Dejando un rastro de lágrimas.
Temblaban en los tejados
farolillos de hojalata.
Mil panderos de cristal,
herían la madrugada.
  *
Verde que te quiero verde,
verde viento, verdes ramas.
Los dos compadres subieron.
El largo viento, dejaba
en la boca un raro gusto
de hiel, de menta y de albahaca.
- ¡Compadre! ¿Dónde está, dime?
¿Dónde está mi niña amarga?
- ¡Cuántas veces te esperó!
¡Cuántas veces te esperara,
cara fresca, negro pelo,
en esta verde baranda!
*
Sobre el rostro del aljibe
se mecía la gitana.
Verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Un carámbano de luna
la sostiene sobre el agua.
La noche se puso íntima
como una pequeña plaza.
Guardias civiles borrachos,
en la puerta golpeaban.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre la mar.
Y el caballo en la montaña.
Now I'm remembering about symbolisms of Lorca's works that could be hinted in other fictions, although it's more like a theory/headcanon from a certain part of the Emdt fandom here on Tumblr, is that in El Ministerio del tiempo, Julián is the origin of the symbolism green=death. In this post there's the one in which the idea was pointed, although it points something more general, not concretely being a symbol for death, because depending on the work or the context, green can be also a symbol for life, rebeldy and desire for freedom. It might seem a little weird, but I will develop later.
Lorca's character makes his debut in the season 1 finale 1×08, La leyenda del tiempo, set on 1924 (Lorca was 26 years old in 1924, although Ángel Ruiz, the actor who plays Lorca is much older) that clearly shows references or takes themes from some of his works, like the poem Fábula y rueda de los tres amigos from Poeta en Nueva York and the poem La Leyenda del tiempo (the title of the episode comes from this poem) from the play Así que pasen cinco años , but indirectly could be a little from Romancero Gitano.
Like, firstly in the episode it's shown a special connection between Julián and Lorca through dreams, and their shared dreams of the episode depict Maite's death.
Something like the eye colors of an actor may seem something trivial, but yeah, Rodolfo Sancho's eyes are green, although sometimes it can't be appreciated well, although for example there's a close up to Julián's eyes at the end of episode 1×07 Tiempo de Venganza , and Mar Ulldemolins' eyes, the actress who plays as Maite, are also green.
Just by the end of the episode Julián tries to save Maite but he fails, and it resembles a bit the situation of the poem where the traveler is going to meet his lover, but she died and he couldn't do anything to save her. But at the end in the season 4 finale he finally saved her.
Next there's the issue of Lorca's death, and Julián is worried about and wanted to warn Lorca about his death but he didn't do it, so in season 4 he did it, although Lorca accepted his fate.
This is kind of a joke but in the first seasons Julián is the Margaery Tyrell of Emdt, like the ones who get married with them probably will die soon, in one case Renly and Joffrey (+Tommen in GOT) and then Maite and Amelia.
Between Amelia and Julián there was the thing about the fake engagement that started on episode 1×04 so Amelia's mother doesn't annoy her with trying to push her into an arranged marriage, and then what it's known from Amelia's tomb and the photos, the wedding, their daughter and Amelia's death, and in episode 8 they me their grandaughter Silvia (played by Iria del Río, who has participated in some period dramas like La catedral del mar and Las chicas del cable). Although after what happened in the following seasons, that future will never happen.
I was thinking about the Emdt showrunners Javier and Pablo Olivares. Pablo had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the first season of Emdt was his last work (in the last previous years the Olivares brothers worked on period dramas like Isabel or Víctor Ros) and there could be some personal aspects reflected on ths series in some character plots, for example following this theme, there's no cure for ALS and there's the struggle of both brothers towards Pablo's death, from Pablo's perspective, knowing that he's going to die soon, like Amelia visiting her own tomb in the first seasons, knowing she's going to die in 5-4 years, although she didn't knew about the cause of her death (that's a thing for fan theories); Pablo and Javier facing Pablo's future death, reflected in Julián and Lorca, Julián told Lorca that he'll die and Lorca accepts it and Julián deals with it; iI would say that this also could be seen in the Amelia &Julián part, although maybe Julián isn't as much emotionaly involved into it but he cares about Amelia (Julián is more focused on Maite and maybe the thing about knowing that he will allegedly marry, have a daughter and lose someone again it'a a bit hard to process);and there's the last part of Javier mourning his brother, that could be represented in Julián's mouring over Maite's death.
My Regrets
She could feel his hand on her damn knee still.
How bad do you wanna keep this job.
She started feeling like she couldn’t breathe
This bad
Creeping up, and up
How bout this bad.
God she has to get out of here.
This bad, he whispered as he leaned towards her.
What a despicable man George Toledo was. What a despicable despicable human.
As she slapped him and ran off she didn’t know where she was running.
Still didn’t know.
Laura Percy-Bruce prided herself on being a strong, independent, capable women, very few things scared her. Everything went as planned in her live.
And then Lenny ran off to LA, and everything was falling apart and god maybe she needed to find her Aunt Shirley but Shirley couldn’t fix this could she?
Right now tho she was shaking.
The door. The Door. She had to get out of thirty rock and she was never coming back.
She loved this job but she was scared, she couldn’t come back here.
She made it successfully to the elevator when she heard someone yell out.
“Laura?Laura!”
Damnit doors,close. Close. Close.
“ LAURA.”
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
when the elevator doors open she thinks shes escaped Gordon when
“ Laura!”
Shit. Shit.
“ Laura stop, where are you going? Laura? Laura there’s a show in less than thirty minutes” Gordon’s talking fast trying to charm his way out of this just like everything.
“Gordon I can’t do this, I don’t belong here this isn’t what I’m good at” Avoid it, avoid it.
“ Bullshit, you’re too good at this.” He paused realization dawning on his face ” Laura, Laura did, George… did he say something? Do something?”
“ No Gordon No I just” she can’t breathe” God Gordon fine yes, George kissed me, I hit him, I can’t I can’t come back”
“ Laura you mean more to this show, more to me, than George does. Than George ever will. “ She hates to see him pleading, but she can’t give in.
“ Gordon there will be a hundred more George Toledos, I will never escape them. At least if I leave this job” she really considered it” I hold more power over them in the clubs.”
“ Laura, I will fight every single one of those men if you let me, Hedy and I are getting a divorce just stay and we’ll work it all out”
The pause went on just long enough she started to get uncomfortable.
“ you know I can’t, I’m not strong enough I- I have to go back to him.”
His face contorts into a very unreadable expression.
“ Laura you know you can’t, you told me yourself what he’s gotten into, you told me “
“ I told you a lot of things Gordon. I’m sorry. I can’t stay here I don’t belong”
“ Mr. Ford consider this my formal resignation, my regrets. “
And she turned to leave, pushing past him without a care in the world.
Out in the cold nigh she began to cry
The heart break she felt was deeper than in years.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Lenny was back in New York and he was killing.
Standing aside the stage watching him from afar Laura felt happy, or maybe not happy but content.
Suddenly she heard a commotion by the door.
“ no no sir you don’t understand I’m Hedy Ford, my husband is on the Number one TV show in the country and I need to speak to Mrs Percy….. please you just understand we don’t have cash to pay the cover because we just wanna see Laura and leave. “
She could see Hedy know, but suddenly someone behind her pushed through.
“ to hell with this I can literally see her. LAURA. LAURA. “
“ Carr??” Laura shouted back with a start, with a look to her left she noticed lenny staring awkwardly at her, she nodded on to him and made her way to the door.
“ Lonnie it’s cool I know them” she noded to the bouncer
“Hedy. Mike. To what do I owe the pleasure”
Hedy glared at Mike in a way that told her they had decided ahead of time that she was doing the talking.
“ Laura the show wants you back.”
She want in the Defense.
“ Hedy I’m sorry I can’t.”
“ because of Toledo right? Screw that honey. You can not let a man of that low of human compassion and capability ruin you like this. That’s not the women you are. and the truth is by running away you are letting him win. I’m sorry to have to say that but. Laura they show was better with you working on it, it needs you. “
“ Hedy that’s sweet but I can’t be within 30 feet of him without being terrified I just can’t I-“
“ Laura.” Mike cut in” Gordon found out George was holding up his contract, that on top of what happened with you, he’s not gonna have a job tommorow.”
She sighed “ Mike that’s great for progress but I can’t, I just can’t do this”
He got this earnest look in his eyes, “Laura, in twenty four hours it is very likely I will be producing the Gordon ford show and I can’t do that shit alone, there is no one I would rather have in my talent manager chair, with my talent board, then you. If you won’t fo it for the show, or for Gordon, do it for me, your friend and professional partner to coke back”
“ Mike there is no for Gordon I” I glance worriedly at Hedy this got awkward fast.
“ Laura I do not care what you and Gordon are getting up to. We’re getting a divorce. The deal always was we’d get married to make our parents happy but if he found someone he wanted to publicly be with that we’d get divorced, and that happened. “
She stopped and thought for a second, her breathing overly defined. She looked over and Lenny was walking toward the group
And it was odd to her to discover she didn’t feel how she did when Gordon walked toward her. she wasn’t thrilled to see him, there was no light.
“ hey Doll, what’s going on” Lenny smirked.
“ Lenny I-“ was she really doing this” I’m sorry I can’t do this any longer. I’m not happy with any of this. Professionally or Personally, this isn’t going to work out and I can’t keep forcing it”
She can see Carr smirk out of this corner of my eye.
“ Laura baby what are you taking about, you know I can’t do this alone honey” Lenny’s eyes are so wide.
Silence stretches on as she looks at the man who saved her.
“ I’m sorry Lenny, it’s all over”
She’s saving herself this time,
She nods at Mike and follows him and Hedy out of the bar.
MNMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
When she arrived to 30 Rock she relived that they said George was getting canned tommorow, he’s still here.
As if sensing her sudden anxiety Hedy put her hand on my arm.
“ you aren’t alone Laura.”
When we made it to the set she makes it a point to stand between Hedy and Mike and when she catches Toledos eye, her gaze holds firm.
Eventually we go to commercial break and Gordon sees me. He gets out of his chair and crosses the room and simply hugs me, and she holds him back just as tight.
“ Laura I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I should’ve done something more but I”
“ Gordon.”She cuts him off “ it’s okay. I’m okay.” Even more now, she chooses not to add.
He pulls away and holds her by the shoulders, “ I I have to go back on air but, don’t run away? I still owe you a drink” he smirks
“ you might owe me a lot more than that Gordy”
He smiles and as he walks back to his seat
“ George. You’re fired. “
Fin
( hello everyone! This is my first time writing and I know it’s an OC no one has any idea who is but I promise with time more will make sense lol. This is the first time I’ve published anything I’ve written so be kind!! I couldn’t decide which point of view to use so I stuck with third person but let me know if that’s weird?? I hope you enjoy! I’d like to reiterate this is how I see the charecters in my mind and I once again don’t know how drug addiction is so I can’t accurately portray that through Lenny. Also I believe in Girl boss Hedy Ford, and she will continue to be a solid part of Gordon’s life and the show, just in this framework the divorce was easier :) I think Mike is a little OOC but I think in more of my stuff he’s better)
So I finished Riverdale season 1. Not even as wild as Twin Peaks yet. I don't have the best memory but like log lady, the weird casino, the Laura palmer look a like... nothing in riverdale yet that's even That wild.
Riverdale season 1 felt like a less weird but similar vibe to Twin Peaks, especially in presentation, a fairly good murder mystery for teens, nicely paced, and I would say it felt written at least as good as Pretty Little Liars or The Vampire Diaries (of which I found both watchable). Maybe it felt a touch like Twin Peaks (light) meets Glee in the sense of Glee wasn't super realistic and was Over the top but was functionally set in high school. But like... a lot of the Over the top elements of Riverdale season 1 are more like... comic callbacks, movie references, Twin peaks references (like choices to use all older car models rather than modern cars, to have a biker bar and gang that scream Twin Peaks plot and the construction company and maple syrup mill paralleled to the lumber mill and Horne family in Twin peaks, the could've easily been poly relationships among the core friend group a la Laura and her bf and her best friend).
So like? Idk it was fun it was enjoyable.
I'm very curious when Riverdale actually does anything 1 as weird as twin peaks. Because it didn't go that far yet, but it was playing with some similar stuff which I liked.
2 gets anywhere in the realm of as weird as I've heard it does??? I have NO idea how I get here from "semi realistic town at least as real feeling as Twin Peaks" where Archie can move to Chicago and jughead could plausibly visit toledo on a bus, and they can all text and call each other whenever (despite old cars which is The weirdest element so far), to Archie goes to world War 1 (or some war)???
And yeah I heard jingle jangle mentioned already lol and it sounds like a drug name. Which is way less weird and more expected writing for this kinda murder mystery vibe/twin peaks vibe.
I am eager to see how things get absolutely bonkers
This can include providing accessible formats, communication support and assistive technology. These are arranged on an individual basis depending on the impact of the disability on the employee.
Laura Dayan has over 10 years of experience working in higher education disability services. She manages the DS student case management team and leads a large, fast-paced office that determines, implements and monitors academic and campus accommodations while supporting students in resolving access-related concerns.
Antonio Willis-Berry has been with the university for five years and oversees processes related to students living on and around campus. He works closely with staff and students to advance accessible student academic, housing and transportation services while ensuring compliance with the law. He has extensive experience with both community mental health and adult disability services. He has a BA in Music and an MA in Higher Education Administration from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Assistive Technology
The demands of university life, including the reading of high volumes of learning materials and lengthy lectures, require assistive technology to facilitate the satisfactory undertaking of academic tasks by students with disabilities. This specialised equipment addresses difficulties with processing, transmitting, storing and receiving information (Lyner-Cleophas 2019:2) such as poor memory. It also helps with prioritising, planning and executing academic tasks.
Existing literature shows that psychosocial factors can influence the utilisation of assistive technology by students with disabilities. Hemmingsson, Lidstrom and Nygard (2009:468) found that some students abandon the use of their assistive technology because they feel it exposes them as deviant or different.
Other conversion factors include the reluctance of students to accept assistance from staff, as well as a lack of awareness on the availability and use of disability aids. In addition, financial constraints are a deterrent to purchasing specialised assistive technology. For example, an effective reading pen costs around R10 000 and is a financial burden on many DU students (Ndlovu 2021:10).
Accessibility Training
Students with disabilities have access to a wide range of services to help them succeed at university. These services are designed to improve students’ learning experiences and support them in meeting academic challenges. Students can use these services to arrange reasonable accommodations that are tailored to their specific needs.
Disability Support Services collaborates with the University and empowers students who have disabilities to coordinate services and accommodations that enable equal access to education and college life. These services are offered free of charge for all students. Students do not have to disclose a diagnosed disability on their enrolment questionnaire in order to receive assistance from the service.
Ms. Bentley’s company, CAIRE (community, access, inclusion, representation, equity), offers consulting and accessibility audits and training for local businesses and community organizations. The Toledo Museum of Art, Imagination Station and Metroparks Toledo are just a few of the organizations that have worked with her. She has also helped them identify areas for improvement, such as captioning video presentations or providing space for sign language interpreters.
Disability Awareness
Many people with disabilities are able to overcome internalized stereotypes and misconceptions about disability. They often report that the biggest barrier is other people, which is why it’s important to be able to talk openly about disability in professional settings and community forums.
Inclusion is the process of ensuring that people with disabilities are given the same opportunities as others to participate in all aspects of life as students, workers, friends, family members and community members. This includes participating in socially expected activities such as using public resources like transportation and libraries, navigating communities and receiving adequate health care.
NDEAM is an excellent opportunity for companies committed to disability inclusion to reinforce this commitment to their employees. For example, companies can post the NDEAM poster in break rooms and other places that employees frequent to raise awareness about the value of disability inclusion. They can also use the Disability Awareness Guide to increase their basic knowledge of disability, start conversations about how they can be more inclusive, and provide tips on appropriate etiquette when working with people who have disabilities.
Women Dressing Women Costume Exhibit at The Met
Tumblr media
"The Costume Institute's fall 2023 exhibition will explore the creativity and artistic legacy of women fashion designers from The Met’s permanent collection, tracing a lineage of makers from the turn of the twentieth century to the present day by highlighting celebrated designers, new voices, and forgotten histories alike.
Women Dressing Women will feature the work of over seventy womenswear designers, spanning ca. 1910 to today, including French haute couture from houses such as Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Madeleine Vionnet, to American makers like Ann Lowe, Claire McCardell, and Isabel Toledo, along with contemporary designs by Iris van Herpen, Rei Kawakubo, Anifa Mvuemba, and Simone Rocha." - The Met
I love that The Met is doing two different costume exhibits a year now. This one only runs for three months, so obviously I had to go this week. Highlights below!
I remember when they last showed this McQueen piece in 2016 (at the Manus x Machina exhibit) and they’re finally highlighting the back of it, which I love.
So in love with the story behind this design (above).
At first glance, I really hated this one (above) and then after a few minutes it really grew on me, especially considering the fact that it’s a product of its time period.
Above Photo: Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte, autumn/winter 2006-2007
My favourite piece of the whole collection, by far.
And I love that someone had the good sense to put a mirror behind this one so we could see the all of the details.
The exhibit runs now until March 3rd.
FLP POETRY BOOK OF THE DAY: Pacific Pieces by Magdalena Louise Hirt
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/pacific-pieces-by-magdalena-louise-hirt/
Pacific Pieces drifts readers through the beginnings of what an undertaking like crossing the #Pacific #Ocean by #sailboat entails. The sequential poems written by Magdalena Hirt about her family of six and their adventures as they cross the Pacific Ocean is the first in a three-book series. Snug and squeezed into their Westerly 49, Selkie, they emerge from their hurricane hole in Rio Dulce, Guatemala, escape a possible pirate attack off the coast of Honduras, pass through the Panama Canal, experience the Galapagos with Covid, and survive twenty-three days at sea to reach the Marquesas. Poems give detailed bites, moments of moon and stars, terrifying defeat, friendship, love of open water with family, booby bird invasion, equator crossing, fog of Covid, environmental crisis, Dracula sunrises, gothic darkness, perfect breezes, huge swells, endless destinations, and the comfort of mountainous islands.
Magdalena Louise Hirt has a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Toledo and a Master of Letters from the University of Highlands and Islands for Scottish Highland and Islands Literature.
PRAISE FOR Pacific Pieces by Magdalena Louise Hirt
Magdelena Hirt‘s Pacific Pieces builds on her previous chapbooks, creating a rare chronicle of a family’s life at sea. But this is not your usual logbook. “My rhythm is slight bounce / of the hull, motor-push, / current sway, dolphin play, / depth-watcher, lighthouse,” writes Hirt. With this lyric movement of push and sway, caution and play, Pacific Pieces carries us from Guatemala through the Panama Canal, around the Galapagos Islands and finally across the Pacific. There is danger here, on both land and water—from a bout with COVID to a spinnaker down. But the poet and her crew keep faith “in instruments and shipwright / hands,” and, always, in the expanse of sky and water. The abiding theme here is one of presence, and how a life at sea hones the attention to a fine point: “The point? What’s the point? Being now. / Living as the earth lives—in movement.”
–Laura Donnelly, author of Midwest Gothic
“The middle of nowhere is the center of everywhere” is a line from a French Polynesian poem, the closing poem in Maggie Hirt‘s arresting work, Pacific Pieces. After we’ve prevailed one harrowing experience after another in this third chapbook, we most certainly realize what life’s like without, shall we say, any landmarks. We are indeed in the center of everywhere aboard the sailboat that serves as full-time home for her, her husband, and their remarkable children. Describing each member of this family as embodying courage is an understatement. Again and again they encounter the forewarned yet unpredictable: upsurges of tumultuous waves, weather that can change before one can make adequate preparation, risks of tumbling overboard into seas populated by poisonous jellyfish, sharks, any deadly denizen happy to enjoy a flailing limb, of course Covid, and even pirates. Hirt not only takes her turns at the helm, but also fulfills her callings as mother, nurse, cook, and “mate” ready to take over or serve as enabler under any emergency. Somehow she works in the time to compose poems that reveal an artistry that creates the feeling of one event after another in tones, lines, timings, structures, fragments, and rhythms that evoke the experience they/we survive. Stunning is the poise of presence that comes through in each poem’s voice. Read Pacific Pieces with suspense and admiration, wondering through each poem how this family prevails over the pandemic in the Pacific, nowhere and everywhere.
–Jack Ridl, author of Practicing to Walk Like a Heron, named by ForeWords Review as co-recipient of the nation’s finest collection of poetry for 2013.
The sea is life’s rhythm throughout the sequences of poems that shape Pacific Pieces. On these waters “the wind puts the otherworld to sleep,” and “seductive night moves” weave their “pre-dawn secrets.” Those luminous secrets might be the trailing lights of a ghost ship, magical phosphorescence, dwindling stars, or the ladder of the Panama Canal “ushering the next step/ the next world.”
In these fine and ever-alert poems, Maggie Hirt continues her family’s journey, degree-by-degree, around the world. Lifting and falling with the seas, kids clamped in life jackets, a dead bird caught in the sail’s rigging, blue-footed boobies, the Southern Cross, but always “this labyrinth of water…water everywhere, so much blue.” These are substantial, uniquely informed and alert poems.
–Joel Lipman, 2022 Axon Creative Fellow, University of Toledo
