Explore The Great Outdoors
Tumblr media
Every day is a good day when its being spent in the Desolation Wilderness. The outdoor photo above is the march up the trail to Lake Aloha (heading up to it from Heather and Susie Lakes located just to the East of Lake Aloha and lower in elevation).
Lake Aloha
Here's the expansive view across the lake. You can't make it out, but to give some perspective, South Lake Tahoe sits in the far distance (under the "thunderhead" cumulonimbus cloud to the left in the photo). Trust me, pictures don't do this open space justice.

Hikers And Backpackers - Be Prepared!
If you've never been here before, it's a place you want to go. Whether you are a backpacker looking to stay overnight or a day hiker wanting to explore, rugged beauty will be found throughout the Desolation Wilderness in the expansive Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Keep in mind, if you haven't spent much time in the outdoors, these hikes can be moderate in intensity, so make sure you are prepared.
Water and snacks are a must. Bring close you can peel off and quickly throw back on.
Temperatures vary throughout the year and the one constant is that the weather is always changing. Afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence during the summer (which can lead to strong winds, thunder, lightning, hail, and brief heavy rains).
It's not likely you'll find yourself getting snowed on during the summer months (when the trails are typically fully open and accessible after the spring snow melt), but these elevations are pushing 7,000 - 10,000 feet plus, so it can never be ruled out. By all means, you'll run into patches of snow. Fun for the kids as they don't expect to get treated to a snowball fight during the summer!
Backpacking With Your Companion!
Going with your best companion is a must too, but make sure the trails are dog friendly. Bring plenty of food and water for them too.
Even though water is everywhere (you don't need to worry about treating their water like we need to do ours!), there are desolate areas along these trails where you'll find they need a drink on the longer, hotter, days.

Best Backpacking Shoe
For the best footwear, I transitioned from traditional hiking boots to the Altra Lone Peak. It's labeled as a "running shoe", but I use them for day hikes and backpacking.
The open toe box lends towards a wider shoe up at our toes. Don't think it makes a big difference? It does! No more bruised pinky toe because your toes are so scrunched in that narrow hiking boot you've been wearing.
They're so light weight they relieve stress on your legs too, so there's more fuel in the tank when you get to where you're going and you feel better when you get there. I'm 48, so I feel it from time to time!
They grip. There's a ton of loose chunk rock in the Desolation Wilderness, along with a lot of granite slab, so the inner sole rock guard blunts the sharp edges with each step and the grippiness keeps you on your feet.
They're not waterproof and that's actually a feature! They don't trap water on your feet like a traditional waterproof hiking shoe will after you miscalculated the stream crossing and got water in them, so your feet don't stay waterlogged. They dry out remarkably quick, so with the right pair of wicking socks, there's no need to shy away or worry about any water you encounter. It's truly unreal and was totally unexpected.
Tumblr media
The only "slight" negative with these backpacking shoes is that you don't get the ankle support found in high top hiking boots, so there are times you feel like you're going to slip out of your shoes. This is mostly mental. However, if you don't have strong ankles, work these new hiking boots in. Make the long treks in your traditional hiking boots and trade off to these for your day excursions. The Altra's break in quickly, but you want to make sure you can handle the change.
Again, there's more than a lot to like about Altra's hiking shoe! They've made all the difference in the world for me and I'm glad I learned about them after stumbling across Jessica "Dixie" Mills online.
To find out more about her backpacking journeys check out her blog at Homemade Wanderlust - she's got a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things backpacking and has through-hiked the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), CDT (Continental Divide Trail), and the Appalachian Trail (just to name a few of her major accomplishments).
Cheers to exploring Lake Aloha and the great outdoors. It does wonders for the mind and body, so get out there!

poisoned mercury | bad reputation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ii. bad reputation by joan jett & the blackhearts
a/n: andddd we're at chb! reader is mean to luke lol. vaping, smoking, mentions of addiction. crumbs of clarisse x chris!
series masterlist | previous | next
“kid, you really need to look at the bright side,” your dad said, taking a sip of his diet coke. “you get to summer in montauk for free. no paying rent, no worrying about what to eat, the world is your oyster.”
“i don’t understand why i have to spend the entire summer here,” you glared at him, close to ripping your hair out.
“you’re smarter than that,” he replied, placing his can down on his table. he kicked back in his chair, letting his sandal-covered feet prop up on his desk. his aloha shirt wrinkled as he placed his arms crossed behind his head. he was taking his camp manager role too seriously. “you got put on probation by your field hockey coach.”
your eyes narrowed, “and?”
“... for punching a teammate.”
“who deserved it!” you argued, huffing as you sat on the seat across from him. if there wasn’t a desk separating you from your dad, you were sure you would’ve strangled him with the camp necklace around his neck. “i promised you i’d be on my best behavior, but no. you decided that i needed to be glued to camp all summer.”
“listen,” he leaned over on his desk, “the girl probably deserved it, but you still got kicked out from summer conditioning, kid– from the top field hockey team in the country! not everyone gets to attend unc but you did and you fucked that opportunity, so until you can prove to me that you have your shit together, you’re stuck in montauk.”
“gods, you’re ridiculous!” you howled, getting up from your seat. “i hate you.”
“love you!” he called out, chuckling to himself. you got your dramatic flair from him so he couldn’t fault you too much for your reaction. he probably would’ve reacted way worse if he was in your position.
“yeah, yeah,” you yelled back, already out of his office. “love ya, too.”
you walked out into the campgrounds, still huffing and puffing at your interaction with your dad. groups of children and teenagers were checking in for the summer. it amazed you how popular camp half blood became over the years. your dad wanted to create a summer camp for aspiring musicians and creatives to meet others and learn from professionals. he already had the network for it given that he used to be a hot-shot producer in the mid-nineties until he fell into his addiction.
your dad never talked much about those dark moments in his life, and not many people knew about it, but he was happy to tell you about what came after it; meeting your mom, falling in love, and having you. his sobriety became his top priority when you were born, after you and your mom, of course. camp half blood started out as a dream your dad had when you were still a child, unsure of what you were passionate about, and he hoped you’d fall in love with music the same way he did. right before you turned four, he opened camp half blood. he said he wanted to have the place up and running and established by the time you were old enough to join. but alas, when you turned six and still had no musical or creative bone in your body, your dad’s hopes of having a musical protégé as a daughter were shattered.
he bounced back from it though when he saw how passionate you were about field hockey. the second you picked up a stick, he saw your eyes brighten and he knew it was lights out from then on. he attended all of your games, bought you the best gear for the sport, and supported you in any way he could. you were thankful for that, for him, but you also knew that he probably would’ve preferred a kid he could talk music with. you saw it when he bragged about the new artists he signed to olympus records or when he talked about the kids at camp half blood.
you took a sharp right turn at the corner of the dining hall, making a beeline to the secret spot by the lake that you stumbled across when you were fourteen. it was the place you retreated to whenever you and your dad fought while you were at camp. fights and arguments between you two happened often. your mom said it was because you were too similar for your own good. it was true. you and your dad were both stubborn, hot-headed, and unable to accept when you were wrong, but it also meant that you and your dad understood each other on a level that not many father-daughter duos did.
even though you refused to tell him–or anyone for that matter– why the altercation with your teammate happened, your dad was on your side. he always was.
you sat on the worn out bench, years of weather damage evident on the wood, taking out your cherry ice vape from your pocket. it was a vice you picked up in college. you weren’t proud of it, and it definitely started affecting your ability to play, but the stress of being a student-athlete, plus all the commotion with your probation started to get to you.
you stared out into the view, appreciating the way the trees framed the lake in a picturesque way. camp half blood was beautiful; nature everywhere, there was utter silence except for the sound of water and birds chirping when you got far enough away from the noise and chatter of the campers, and the weather in the summer months was perfect. you let the smoke escape your lips, watching as the cloud dissipated into the air.
“oh, my bad. i didn’t realize someone would be out here.”
you turned around to see a boy, an unlit cigarette hanging from the corner of his lips. he wore a black, tight-fitting t-shirt and gray sweatpants. there was a silver chain hanging around his neck with a pendant tucked underneath his shirt. his tussled curls peeked under his backwards yankees cap.
“spot’s taken,” you said, facing the view once more. you took a deep breath, sliding your vape in the pocket of the hoodie you wore. “go somewhere else.”
“that thing’s gonna kill you, y’know.” either the boy didn’t hear you or he didn’t care enough to listen because he slid on the bench next to you, taking out a lighter for his cigarette. he closed his eyes, letting the nicotine into his system, “that has like chemicals and shit.”
you scoffed, “like your cig is any better.”
“i know what i’m putting in my body,” he shrugged. he motioned aimlessly in your direction, “you don’t know what’s in there. it hasn’t been around long enough for us to know the long term effects.”
“‘m not planning to be doing this long term.”
“sure,” he smiled at you, unconvinced. “i’m luke.”
you stared at his outstretched hand, shaking your head, “i’m not interested.”
“i was just trying to be polite.”
“if you want to be polite, find another spot to smoke.”
luke eyed you, undeterred by your hostility. he leaned back on the bench, taking another puff, “nah, i’m good right here.”
you took out your vape again knowing that you’ll need it to get through this conversation. the two of you sat in silence as you both smoked, letting the smell of the cigarette mix in with the artificial cherry scent. you tried your best to ignore the boy beside you, but it was hard to when he was so close to you. the bench seemed much larger when you were fourteen, when you were alone as its only occupier.
“so five star, tough day?”
“what did you call me?”
“five star,” luke nodded to your hoodie, flicking off the ashes on his cigarette. “your unc field hockey hoodie? like five star recruit.”
you looked down at your sweater, completely forgetting that you were wearing your team merchandise. you tugged on the collar awkwardly, suddenly feeling like you were exposed. “oh.”
“so, tough day?”
you glared at him, “what makes you say that?”
“well, for starters, it’s the first day of camp and you’re by yourself away from where all the fun shit is happening, smoking a fucking– what is that? strawberry?”
“cherry ice,” you corrected.
“cherry ice vape,” luke continued, “and you’re biting my head off for trying to start a conversation.”
“maybe i’m having a bad day because a boy disrupted my me-time and decided to start a fucking conversation when i obviously want to be alone.”
luke chuckled, pointing to the cigarette between his fingers, “relax, i’ll get out of your hair after this one.”
“don’t make it a habit.”
“what? smoking?” he asked, a boyish smile on his face. “already a habit of mine.”
“interupting my me-time,” you replied, blowing out rings with the smoke in your mouth. “i don’t care what you do to your body.”
“should we exchange numbers and coordinate when we’ll be using the spot?”
you rolled your eyes at the teasing tone of his voice. this guy just doesn’t quit, “no, because you won’t be coming back here.”
“i dunno,” luke looked out into the lake, a soft smile on his face. “i like it here. it’s pretty.”
“i was here first.” you weren’t backing down. this was your spot. your secret spot, at that. not many campers ventured this far out into the woods, too afraid to get caught by their counselors and get in trouble, or too scared to get lost in the maze of trees.
“sharing is caring, y’know,” his tone was playful.
you looked at him, no emotion on your features. you studied his face, furrowing your eyebrows like you were trying to place him. he looked familiar like you’d seen his face before. his eyes were big and brown, innocent looking compared to the smirk on his lips. a scar ran down the side of his face, subtle, but noticeable if you looked hard enough. it was slightly discolored compared to the rest of his face. his jaw sharp and cheekbones defined, with beginnings of a summer blush dusted across the bridge of his nose and the high points of his face. behind his ear, a small tattoo of the number “4” was hidden under his curls. his ears were pierced, two, small diamond studs on each earlobe.
you’d seen him before, but you just couldn’t remember where and when for the life of you.
you blinked, “i don’t like to share.”
he threw the butt of his cigarette on the floor, gently stomping out the remnants of it with the tip of his converse convered feet, “noted.”
you watched as he got up, keeping his promise of leaving you alone after one cigarette. the smirk on his face remained as he turned to face you before he left, “see you around, five star.”
you made an noncommittal noise, not missing the sound of a deep rumble from his chest as he laughed at your dismissal. you watched him disappear into the trees, noting how his back flexed under his tight shirt as he cleared a path to avoid ducking under stray branches.
you waited around twenty minutes before getting up to leave. you didn’t want to risk running into luke again, just in case he got lost on his way back. you were not going to lead him back to the safety of camp. if he got lost after trying to take over your spot, then so be it. that wasn’t your problem.
as you entered the main campgrounds, you saw clarisse, a teammate of yours, who also got put on probation for coming to your defense, leaning against a tree trunk by the registration table. she needed a summer job and housing since she wasn’t allowed to come to practices and live on campus during her probation period, and you were quick to recommend her to your dad to be a camp counselor for the summer. thankfully, your dad was kind enough to say yes. at least you wouldn’t be alone all summer.
you walked over to her, smiling kindly at the young kids you ran into on the way, excited out of their minds to be away from home for the next few months. “what’s up, la rue?”
she smacked your arm, “why didn’t you tell me?”
“ow,” you winced, clutching your upper arm. the girl was strong. there were many moments where you were thankful that you played for the same team. you did not want to be the poor girl who stood in clarisse’s way when she was in the zone. “tell you what?”
“poisoned mercury!” she hissed, crossing her arms over her chest, “why didn’t you tell me they were gonna be here this summer?”
“oh,” you rolled your eyes, “i didn’t think it was a big deal.”
“not everyone grew up around celebrities, y/n,” clarisse reminded you, shaking her head. “sometimes, i forget that you did. you don’t talk about it as much as i would if i grew up like you.”
“yeah, well, it’s not all glitz and glamor, to be honest.”
you thought about your last relationship– a boy from california that you met during one of your dad’s work trips. it was a whirlwind summer romance that ended in a lot of heartbreak and a promise to yourself that you would never, ever date another musician again. your dad did try to warn you about him, subtly, of course, since he knew better than to butt into a teenage girl’s relationship. the boy had been begging your dad for a record deal for ages and he thought that by dating you, he’d get one step closer to his goal. your dad dangled the possibility of a record deal in front of him like a carrot, his own personal entertainment since he saw right through the boy, and ended up blacklisting him from the industry after he broke your heart.
a little extreme? sure, but it wasn’t like he was that talented anyway. you still cringe when you remember his terrible rendition of “grenade” by bruno mars.
“do you know when they get here?” clarisse asked, snapping you out of your thoughts.
“i dunno, don’t care,” you shrugged, “when did you become such a huge fan?”
“since i saw how hot their bassist is,” she laughed, a twinkle of mischief in her eyes. “seriously, y/n, chris rodriguez is fine.”
“enough, there are kids around,” you shoved her playfully, laughing as you motioned for her to follow you into the cabin you were staying in. “i didn’t know they were gonna be here, actually.”
“your dad didn’t tell you?”
“i’ve been on a strict ‘no talking, unless it’s yelling’ rule with my dad the past few months,” you explained, entering your room and closing the door behind you. your bags were messily thrown across the floor, bed unmade, and walls empty. you didn’t get around to decorating and putting things in their place before you gave your dad a piece of your mind. “and i refused to accept that i would be staying here all summer.”
“it’s not that bad so far,” she moved your training bag from your bed, sitting on it, “the kids are adorable little music nerds. i don’t think they’ll cause too much trouble.”
“for your sake, ares cabin head counselor, i really hope they don’t,” you teased, beginning to put your things away. “i’m not worried about the kids, actually. it’s more of the people our age that i’m worried about. musicians can be such dicks.”
“true,” she agreed, “do you remember the kid who acted like he was hot shit when he performed at the fall concert at unc?”
“yes!” you let out a belly laugh, “the one who shamelessly flirted with lena?”
clarisse nodded, falling on your bed in a fit of laughter, “then ran away when he saw charlie.”
“i mean charlie is a scary-looking dude,” you commented, taking off your hoodie and stuffing it into one of the drawers. you fixed the camp half blood shirt you wore under it, “big ass linebacker.”
“but the biggest teddy bear.”
“the biggest,” you grinned, thinking about your friends back on campus. you already missed them and your crazy, late-night adventures in your college town. you and clarisse met charlie the summer before your freshman year at unc during athlete orientation. he shyly asked if he could sit next to you and clarisse in the back row, not wanting to block the view for people behind him if he were to sit in the front. he was a timid guy for someone who could probably bulldoze you and clarisse without breaking a sweat.
he introduced you to his girlfriend, silena, when the school year started, and the four of you became inseparable ever since. you were glad you found a friend group in college, one that you could trust and depend on.
“and this is the cabin where you all will be staying.”
you looked back at clarisse, eyes widening as you heard your dad’s voice in the living room of the cabin. he didn’t tell you that someone other than clarisse was going to be staying in the cabin with you.
“there are six rooms in total. one master and five others. there are three bathrooms. one’s in the master and the other two are out here. this is the living room and the small kitchen is down the hall,” he continued to explain, “my daughter has dibs on the master bedroom, though, so tough luck for you guys.”
“i didn’t know you had a daughter, mr. d.” it was a boy’s voice.
“yeah, i do, y/n,” your dad said. you can practically hear the smile in his voice. “she doesn’t like the limelight so i don’t bring her up too much. i’ll introduce you guys to her when i see her.”
“chris, put that down!” another voice. this time it was a woman. she sounded older, and tired, like she’d said that phrase a million times before. “sorry about them, mr. d. they may all be of age, but i swear it still feels like they’re kids.”
your dad laughed, “trust me, i get it, may. my little girl is turning 19 soon, but she’d give her 12-year-old self a run for her money.”
“i call this room!”
“travis, you can’t just call dibs on rooms when the rest of us haven’t gotten a chance to take a look around.”
“you snooze, you lose, rodriguez.”
clarisse jolted from your bed, jaw hanging as she put the puzzle pieces together. she pointed at the door, whispering, “is that poisoned mercury?”
your dad was in the middle of a conversation with the woman, may, when you opened your bedroom door to investigate. he was nodding along to what she was saying, taking mental notes of her words. you walked towards them, giving may a polite smile when she noticed you coming their way.
“speak of the devil,” your dad clapped his hands, placing a hand on your back to guide you into the conversation. “may, this is my daughter, y/n. y/n, this is may castellan, poisoned mercury’s manager.”
you held out your hand, “nice to meet you.”
“oh god, a teenager with manners,” she exhaled, immediately accepting your handshake, “pleasure to meet you.”
“you know we can still hear you, right, mama c?” a boy with curly hair peeked his head out from the room beside clarisse’s. he was wearing a white tank top, his tanned skin adorned with patchwork tattoos on full display. he had a pearl necklace around his neck, a charm of the band’s logo resting between his collarbones. he had a wide smile as if he wore his emotions proudly on his face. “these walls are thin.”
“you were supposed to hear me, chris,” she replied, rolling her eyes jokingly.
you tilted your head, analyzing the boy. you understood what clarisse meant. he wasn’t your type, but he was definitely hers. she always did like the golden retriever type. you raised your arm, giving him a small wave, “hey, i’m y/n.”
“it’s the famous y/n!” you turned around at the sound of your name to see a boy with dark hair and a vintage iron maiden shirt on. he was leaning against his doorframe, toned arms flexed as he stuffed his hands in his front pockets. “travis.”
another boy, looking eerily similar to travis popped his head out his door at the sounds of introductions. you cocked an eyebrow, “are you guys tw–”
the boy shook his head, stating “no we’re not,” at the same time as travis nodded, “yes we are.”
you looked at may for help. she shook her head, throwing a pointed look at travis, “they are not. travis is older than connor by a year.”
“which one of you fuckers stole my charger?”
you froze in your spot. you knew that voice. your mind started connecting the dots then– luke castellan, lead singer of poisoned mercury. you’d seen pictures of him on your twitter timeline from both your friends from college and from home. he seemed to be the topic of conversation every week because there was a new thing to write about. his wild rockstar adventures were a crowd favorite.
you once heard that he had a pet monkey that he bought with his first check from their album sales, but tmz reported it so it wasn’t the most reliable source. the last article you saw about luke was titled “leaving a trail of broken hearts: luke castellan’s extensive dating history and how they ended.” typical.
“oh, luke, i want you to meet my daughter,” your dad beamed, none the wiser. he placed his hands on your shoulders, twisting your body to face the boy.
you pursed your lips, biting the inside of your cheek. so much for him getting lost.
“five star, nice to see you again,” luke’s eyes lit up, the corner of his lips quirking up in a smile, “looks like we’re roommates.”

Hi! 👋🏻 I loved your bad batch fic with Hunter!
May I request one Hunter x reader please?
Something along the lines of angst and ends in fluff? She does something stupid on a mission or something that she believes risked all of them. She's all sad and angry at herself, nearly in tears. Shes convinced herself everyone is mad and disappointed in her, especially Hunter. Hunter comes and finds her. Hunter asks why she hasn't been talking to him. She says "Idk, you're angry with me ." But he says "I'm definitely not." Then "You should be." Then he comforts her.
I heard an audio like this on tiktok and I just cried 😭 but I know it would work so well for a fic.
Here's a bouquet of flowers 💐
Aloha! 😊
I'm not sure if I got this right, but I did something 😅
Hunter x Fem!Reader - One-Shot - Skipping Stones
Tumblr media
Angsty/Comfort/Fluff/Strong Language
____________________
"You had a job! One job and you blew it! The mission is fucked," Crosshair growls. His words cut deep; you're embarrassed enough as it is. You avoid his gaze, unable to meet it. Wrecker growls, "Calm down, Crosshair". Crosshair throws his arms in the air. "The mission is blown, that means we don't get paid". Echo says calmly but sternly, "This kind of thing happens occasionally, to all of us, calm down, give her a break" Tech adjusts his goggles and says, "Unforeseen things happen now and then, no need to get worked up" You are grateful for the intercession of others, but something is unsettling you. Crosshair continues to grumble, but Hunter doesn't say a word, he seems so brooding, it's almost worse than if he had reprimanded you. You search his gaze, but he is lost in thought. You finally withdraw from the others. You don't join dinner, nor do you join the others in general. "Does anyone know where she went?" asks Hunter finally, after not seeing you for hours. Wrecker tells him that he saw you leave the landing site and head for the lake nearby. Hunter sets out to find you and finds you sitting on the shore, watching you throw small stones into the water, watching them make small waves until the surface of the water calms down again.
Your thoughts are racing, playing what happened in your minds eye again and again. Gritting your teeth, feeling the sting of held back tears behind your eyes and the bridge of your nose.
He can sense the restlessness in you. You don't hear Hunter coming, and flinch in fright when he addresses you. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. What are you doing out here by yourself all this time?" he asks, sitting down next to you on the grass by the lake shore. You suppress the sigh that automatically wants to cross your lips. "After I failed so magnificently today, and you didn't even look at me afterward, I thought maybe I should get out of your way." Hunter looks at you from the side, startled. You return his gaze and say, "You have every right to be angry."
He frowns, his expression softening a lot as he answers, "I'm not mad at all, at least not at you. It was unfortunate circumstances that led to this situation, it could have happened to any of us. Yes, I was a bit absent-minded after the mission, because in my mind I was trying to find a way to explain to our client what happened. It had nothing to do with you." "Crosshair doesn't see it that way. Maybe you should be angry." Hunter snorts and laughs softly, "Since when do you give a womp rat's ass about what Crosshair says? Didn't you say the other day that when our Sniper opens his mouth, all that comes out is sarcasm and venom?" You roll your eyes. "I'm just saying that to tease him, actually he and I get along fine. But today he was really pissed, and I can't even blame him." Hunter moves closer, gently puts an arm around you and kisses your temple. "He'll calm down. None of us are really mad at you, and certainly not me, sweetheart. Like I said, this could have happened to any of us, don't worry, love." He rummages through the rocks on the shore beside him, picks one up and says, "And now I'll show you how to do it right"
You blink, surprised about the sudden change of topic. Deftly, Hunter takes a swing and skips the flat stone over the surface of the water, at least five times. "How do you do that?" you ask, surprised. He grins at you, stands up and helps you to your feet as well.
"I'll show you if you promise to stop pouting and come back to the shuttle with me afterward". You look at him, hesitant, as he holds your gaze with his, testing and hoping. "I don't know..." Hunter kisses your cheek and whispers, "Come on, sweetie, do me this favor." With a sigh and a lopsided smile, you finally give in. Hunter grins with satisfaction. He picks up a flat stone and places it in your hand. "First of all, the stone needs to be as flat as possible". Hunter shows you the angle and posture, guiding your hand and arm. But you drop the stone back into the grass and lean into his arms. Hunter laughs softly, "You seem unfocused to me" and wraps his arms around you, kissing your neck. The touch of his warm lips, tingles under your skin. You sigh in relief, just enjoying his closeness and the warmth of his body against yours. "Are you okay again?" he asks gently, leaning his cheek against yours. "I'm fine" "Are you sure?" You smile and say, "Pretty sure".

Regarding my heading down an unfinished road... I found it on Google Street View.
So these are from a year ago.
Tumblr media
This is the lane I drove down.
Tumblr media
And this is the section where I realized, "Oh shit, I ain't supposed to drive here."
I used generative fill to update these images to what they looked like on the day of embarrassment.
Tumblr media
Looking back, there were a few cones. But all of the "do not enter" signs were gone and I think it would be perfectly reasonable to assume you could drive here. I think other people may have avoided it because they drive in this area regularly. I drive maybe once or twice a month.
And here is what the dead end looked like with a year of construction progress.
Tumblr media
(It is scary how close generative fill matched this to my memory of it.)
I was really confused when I got to this point. I wasn't sure if I should try backing up or turning. I thought the gravel was okay to drive on, so I pulled forward and started a u-turn. But there was a sharp drop-off from the road to the gravel section I couldn't see and that was very jarring. And the gravel was not fit for driving on. So I kicked up a ton of dust and passers-by were all "WTF are you doing?"
Hell, I was like "WTF are you doing?"
I have a feeling this memory will join a few other embarrassing moments that pop into my head right before I try to fall asleep.
It wasn't my fault, but yeah, I hate driving around here.
It feels like the highway construction in this area is endless. It's been going on for years and it never feels like any progress is being made.
They closed off 3 highway exits for streets that contain a lot of local businesses. One of them leads straight to Ferguson. And if you don't know to exit onto a side road ahead of these areas, you'll just pass them by. So people from out of town who might be looking for a place to eat or shop could easily drive past these areas.
I feel sad for my community. Big franchises are closing up shop. There is no pizza place that directly delivers to my area. When your last pizza place closes up, that's when you know your community is in trouble.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anyone around here wants pizza delivered you have to spend a ton to have it DoorDash'd in from another area.
And it all started with a "white flight" epidemic. They even made a documentary about it called Spanish Lake (my township). There was a failed housing project nearby and a lot of poor Black folks started moving to Spanish Lake afterward. Then some scummy real estate people took advantage and it all snowballed from there...
"The 1990s saw a mass exodus of the white population, spurred on by blockbusting, a practice some U.S. real estate agents use to encourage white property owners to sell their houses quickly at a loss, implying the African-Americans moving into their neighborhood will depress their property values."
Apparently blockbusting is the new red lining.
The "controversy" section on Wikipedia sums up the movie pretty well.
Tumblr media
I started following a Facebook page dedicated to Spanish Lake, thinking it would be other folks in my community. I thought maybe I could get to know my neighbors.
Instead, it is all of the white people who moved away reminiscing about how great Spanish Lake used to be.
Tumblr media
People in this group are trying really hard not to say the quiet part out loud.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riff raff?
Scot, I think you dropped this...
Tumblr media
I grew up here. I still live here. I love my house and my street. There are some areas that could really use some help, but if you live here, you know the few small pockets to stay away from. I have no issue walking up and down my street at night without fear.
They also mourn the loss of the businesses that closed because they abandoned the area.
There is the mall which will be officially demolished soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, yes, it is the spooky mall from that viral video.
youtube
There was the movie theater... at the mall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was the Aloha Roller Rink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which now looks like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the burger joint.
Tumblr media
The pizza place.
Tumblr media
And the other pizza place.

Saullo's was okay.
Angelo's in the next town over is better. And still in business!

What was I talking about?
Oh, yeah. Don't drive down unfinished roads!

Hi Zoe! I hope you’re doing well and thank you for taking the time to read this. I was thinking, what if a similar situation happened like in ‘the crossing’ where fem reader gets stuck hanging on the ledge (could be for a different reason that they are hanging there) and they can’t swim? And for a bit more drama, almost drown but their Batcher s/o saves them? Thanks again for taking time to read this! 🙏
Aloha!
A nice idea! Let me see what I can do with that 😊

________________________
The mine that Cid bought is a disaster. Ipsium is difficult to mine here, and not exactly in large quantities. You are determined to be helpful, leave the others behind and find a niche where you can find and mine high quality Ipsium. However, you have to climb over a deep abyss which's end you can't see, to do your work.
________________________
Crosshair
"There you are. What are you doing?"
You roll your eyes but ask him with a smile, "What does it look like I'm doing, sweetie?"
He looks at you, seeing you propped up against the walls in awkward posture, working over a pit.
"Looking like a suicide attempt," he says dryly, looking down into the depths that eventually fade into blackness, not revealing its contents, "Come out of there."
"I know what I'm doing," you say stubbornly, reapplying your tool.
"I don't care, I want you to get out of there", he growls impatiently, and is already about to climb into the alcove with you.
A little annoyed, you say, "I'm almost done, Cross."
You shift your weight a little to look at him as he climbs toward you. As you do, a small piece of rock gives way under your right foot. You jerkily lose your footing and fall into the darkness, passing his hastily, in panic, outstretched hand.
Tumblr media
His heart makes an unpleasant leap as you fall into the depths with a scream just past his fingers. "Fucking hell!" he exclaims as he leaps after you at the same moment, heart racing wildly. Crosshair's thoughts flip over at the speed of light in the seconds it takes him to fall, expecting to hit hard rock and break all his bones, or even land on your corpse, but instead icy spring water suddenly envelops him, an underground river in a cave system. The current is incredibly strong, and he is immediately swept along. He rolls up to protect his body from possible collisions with rocks. He has his eyes open, but he can't see anything, it's all so impenetrable black, only now and then a light seems to come from somewhere that he can't place. Crosshair remembers that you can't swim, so even if the river calmed down at one point, you would probably drown if he didn't find you, the thought sets his mind on fire. With an undertow, he suddenly descends, the river emptying into a small underground lake. Hastily he struggles to the surface, coughs and looks around urgently. The cave he has landed in is riddled with fluorescent crystals that bathe the room in a ghostly, pale blue light. Then he hears someone fidgeting in the water, turns to the soundscape and just sees you go under. Crosshair doesn't think, he quickly dives in your direction, gets a hold of you and struggles with you back to the surface and finally to shore.
You cough violently, trying to get the water out of your lungs. He helps you turn onto your side and holds you gently, his hands still shaky from the waning adrenaline. When you stop coughing, he says sternly, "Why can't you listen to me for once?" "It wasn't my fault, you distracted me," you protest. He rolls his eyes. "Oh please." "Yes you did" He turns you around to face him again and looks at you piercingly. "Guilt aside, how do you feel? Are you hurt?" You think for a moment and finally say, "Shaky, but unhurt, I think". With a sigh, he leans his forehead against yours. "You're going to give me a heart attack someday".
Wrecker
He is scared to the bone and terrified of the depths he is looking into as he looks down.
"You really shouldn't be climbing around here, my dear."
"I'm almost done," you say focused, handing him another tube you've filled with Ipsium.
Wrecker accepts it and stows it away carefully, then watches you again, frowning nervously.
"At least let me get a rope to secure you with, just in case".
You sigh softly and say, "Wrecker, sweetie, I'll be done in a minute".
He sighs as well and says seriously, "That really makes me nervous to see you doing gymnastics there"
"I'm not doing gymnastics, I'm mining Ipsium" you correct him laughing softly.
"You know what I mean," he grumbles unwillingly.
"This is the last one," you say, handing him another tube.
Wrecker tucks it away and says with relief, "Good, then give me your hand, so I can-"
He interrupts himself as you suddenly slip and disappear from his sight with a scream before he can reach his arm out to you. Wrecker's chest tightens, he squeezes himself into the small alcove and looks down. Everything inside of him is struggling in wild panic, and yet he jumps after you, not knowing what awaits him down there.
Tumblr media
You are in panic as the cold water closes around you, but even worse is the suction that the current has. Resistance is futile, you are swept away with the water masses, again and again your head is underwater, no matter how much you pedal and try to resist the suction. You swallow water while fighting against drowning.
It's like a horror roller coaster ride, with the continuous fear of death and the masses of water pulling you along like a toy ball. Then you plunge once more into the depths and the torrent of water no longer tears at you, but you struggle to the surface in panic. In your mind, you curse never having learned to swim.
The shore is not far away and yet it is much too far for you, as you have no idea how to reach it. Then you hear a scream and someone else falls into the small lake you are in.
You cough and try to call his name, but you keep swallowing water. Still, he spots you and as his strong hands reach for you, a wave of relief washes over you, causing you to burst into tears.
Wrecker pulls you to shore, you see him in the light of the glowing crystals in the cave you landed in. He takes off his helmet and drops it, grabbing your face and talking soothingly to you.
It takes a moment for you to calm down in his arms and cough up the water.
"Are you hurt?" you hear him ask gently.
Shakily, you answer, "I don't think so."
He squeezes you lovingly, softly with relief, and says, "Let's never do that again."
Echo
"Do you really think this is a good idea?" he asks critically when he spots you in the alcove.
You fill the next tube and say, "This ipsium is much purer than what we found in the other mine."
Echo frowns and says, "But it's much more dangerous to mine. You've seen that there's a deep abyss below you?"
"Yes, I'm aware of that, Echo."
He sighs and accepts the next tube from you.
"I don't like this, I should do this".
You look at him and say softly, "Echo, this is even more dangerous for you and your prosthetics than it is for me"
He grumbles softly to himself, but doesn't contradict you.
As you hand him another tube, he says impatiently, "Okay, that's more than enough, now get out of there"
With a sigh and a roll of your eyes, you finally give in to him, hand him your tools and begin to turn in the alcove to climb out, careful not to fall. Echo immediately reaches out and grabs your wrist as soon as you are within reach. The timing is perfect, because at the same moment you slip on the rock and lose your footing.
Echo immediately drops backwards to pull you towards him with his weight. You land above him with your heart pounding, his hand still tight around your wrist. You both breathe heavily, startled.
Then his eyes narrow critically as you look at each other.
"I told you it was dangerous, if I hadn't been there you would have fallen," he grumbles.
You're still all startled, the echo of the shock still in your bones, so you don't answer him right away.
"I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been there," he says a little softer when he sees the look on your face.
You collect yourself and finally say nudgily, "We have the Ipsium, don't we?"
He sighs and lowers his head back.
"You are missing the point here."
You kiss his chin and he looks back at you.
"You're going to be my downfall one day, one way or another" Echo says with a wry smile.
"Don't say such dark things," you reply, kissing his chin again.
AC: I left out the water in Echo's part because I wasn't sure how well Echo could swim with the prosthetics.
Hunter
"Why am I not surprised?"
You hear Hunter's voice and look cautiously over your shoulder in his direction. He looks critically at your position in the small alcove above the abyss. You can tell he doesn't like what he sees. He seems worried.
You smile, unperturbed, and tell him, "Don't worry, I'm almost done."
He sighs softly and says, "Okay, but be careful."
"I always am," you say lightly, cheerfully.
You are so happy that you can contribute something to your mission. But Hunter raises his eyebrows critically at your comment and says, "Oh yeah?"
You laugh softly and ask, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Again you hear Hunter sigh, then he says, "Nothing, sweetie, just be careful."
You fill the last tube, handing him the tube as well as your tools before you set about climbing back. He has climbed halfway into the alcove to help you as you lose your footing as one of the rocks crumbles beneath your feet. You slump down, Hunter getting hold of the sleeve of your jacket, but not your arm. The fabric tears noisily and you still fall.
Heart racing, Hunter stares in disbelief for a second or two at the torn piece of fabric in his clenched hand in panic. Then he looks down into the blackness where you have disappeared screaming and are now silent.
Tumblr media
Thoughts are racing through your head, and yet none of them form properly as you fight in absolute panic against the icy masses of water that are sweeping you along. Again and again you swallow water, get it into your nose, into your lungs. Your head keeps coming up above the water, but you don't get a chance to catch your breath, because the next moment you're being pulled down again by the current.
Then you fall, and there's this feeling in your stomach as if you're on a roller coaster going downhill, or miss a step while climbing stairs, before you hit the surface of the water again and sink into it.
You struggle to the surface in a panic, your legs are so tense they feel like they are cramping. You can barely keep your face above the water, wriggling, coughing and unable to think clearly.
Then you feel something wrapping around the middle of your body. A new wave of panic rises in you. You are not familiar with this planet, you are somewhere deep in a river in a cave system, who knows what lives down here. The memory of your first encounter with a Dianoga is still very vivid in your mind. You begin to scream and wriggle, trying to free yourself.
It takes you a moment to hear Hunter's voice.
"Easy, love, easy."
You hyperventilate, shaking in his grip, trying to clear your head, and only very slowly does the realization sink in that you are about to be rescued. You start to cry as he pulls you ashore.
"It's okay, sweetheart, you're safe, it's going to be okay," he says gently, finally pulling you out of the water.
Hunter takes off the helmet and sets it down on the ground next to you, then he bends over you kneeling next to you, takes off his gloves and gently strokes your face.
"Hey, it's me, everything's fine, we made it through".
When you finally calm down, he says in gentle admonition, "I told you to be careful."
You blink looking at him, ashamed, but also grateful and still completely lost for words. You fall around his neck and cling to him, eliciting a surprised, "Oh?!" from him.
Hunter gently wraps his arms around you, kisses your cheek, and says with a soft, quiet laugh, "You didn't think I was just going to let you disappear like that."
Tech
"I appreciate your efforts, but you're taking quite a risk," he says critically, taking a closer look at your position as you squat there in the alcove above the chasm, mining Ipsium.
"I'll be careful," you assure him, "Besides, I'm almost done, my beloved."
He smiles, he loves it when you call him that, warmth rises in his cheeks every time. But his face immediately turns serious again.
"Please just don't fall"
"Are you really that worried about me?" you ask, amused.
Tech adjusts his goggles with his index finger while still keeping an eye on you and says, "First and foremost, yes. But secondly, I'd have to jump in after you if you fell, we don't know what's down there, so I'm not necessarily eager to do that."
You frown in surprise.
"You'd jump after me?"
"Of course," Tech says without hesitation.
You smile at him, "My hero."
Tech blinks a little shyly to the side, and you can see his ears turn red.
"Anytime, my dear" he finally says, a bit bashfully.
You finally hand him the last tube with a smile then the tool before you set about climbing out of the alcove when a piece of the rock unexpectedly breaks away from under you, and you fall down with a jolt.
Tech rushes forward, still trying to grab you, but his hand narrowly misses yours. He doesn't think for long, as he said before, he jumps right after you, even though all his organs seem to knot up at the same moment.
Tumblr media
It's so cold, so dark, and you're completely helpless in the torrent of water. Panic floods your mind like the water overflows your body. You fight hard against drowning, against the current, but it seems futile.
It seems to take an eternity and yet, all of a sudden, you fall. You are still in the water, but there is no current anymore. Panic-stricken, you struggle to the surface of the water and try to hold yourself up.
It's not quite so dark anymore, the cave you landed in is riddled with glowing crystals. Actually a very beautiful sight, but right now you have absolutely no eyes for it, you just don't want to drown.
"Hold still," you suddenly hear Tech's voice and against your panic, you do exactly what he says, trusting him without hesitation.
You feel his arm around you, and the next moment you are pulled by him to the shore of the underground lake. You shiver all over, not only because you are wet, and it is cold down here, but also because the adrenaline is starting to wear off.
Hearing Tech coughing next to you, you look at him.
"I'm sorry," you say meekly.
He moves closer to you, puts an arm around you, and drops beside you, exhausted.
"It's okay," he says a little breathlessly, "We're still alive, my love."
You blink, look at him and say, deeply moved, "You really jumped in after me".
Tech nods slowly.
"Of course. Why would I say that if I wasn't willing to do it?"
You say quietly, "That's still two different things for most"
"Not for me," he says with conviction.
You smile gratefully at him, full of deep affection for this wonderful man.
"I love you," you say softly.
You see his cheeks blush slightly before he says softly, "I love you too," and his lips touch yours.

what are some of your favorite gay bars/clubs in Orlando?
Barbarella (formerly i-bar [formerly Independent Bar {formerly Barbarella}]) was the best fun dive dance bar. Famously taglined “the bar for people who don’t like people,” they had themed nights that played different genres, like Mac and Cheese Wednesday that played cheesy 90’s music, New Wave Saturdays, Heavy Metal Fridays. It was dope.
Aku Aku tiki bar will fuck you up with how good and strong their drinks are. Ask for the Tiger Fucker. They’ll hate you, but you’ll thank me later.
Guesthouse. Chill spot, great for all inclusive gatherings. Easy going.
Mathers. Super swanky, antique-filled speakeasy. THE BEST AROUND THE HOLIDAYS.
Cocktails & Screams. Fun Halloween/Spooky themed bar. Go for a cabaret night.
Will’s Pub. Famous grunge venue and dive for punks.
Aloha Beautiful. Sunday Karaoke is dope and the tiki drinks are pretty great.
Hammered Lamb. Best local hangout and a fun spot for a casual Sunday brunch, or after work drink. Get the frozé, and treat yourself to a rum floater.
Stardust Lounge (not to be confused with Stardust Coffee). Go for dirty bingo — the best I ever won was a straight p0rn dvd and I’m still bitter about it.
The Stubborn Mule. Great restaurant for any occasion, but their brunch is decadent. Mules are pretty great and it’s THE spot on Sunday.
World of Beer. Hear me out, you’re there for the great staff, and to sit outside and watch the eye candy as they run around Lake Eola. You’ll also thank me later.
District Dive. The place to be on Friday nights (as well as the adjoined Southern Nights and Southern Craft). Dive is just good for actually talking to people if you’re at any of the 3.
The Wellborn. Ok, so this place is nice as hell. It shouldn’t be in Orlando but it somehow is. Just overall great place.
Savoy. If you want to experience gay Orlando history, Savoy is the place. Don’t get the poppers from the popper vending machine.
Also, some of these are Gay bars, and others are bars that are LGBTQ friendly. In reality, Orlando is just very gay and we’re slowly taking over the city.
