To be perfectly honest, I found 3.06 a bit of a letdown. All Wilhelm’s problems won’t magically disappear just because he’s abdicating. And I found Kristina’s acquiescence deeply implausible. If someone has acted one way for 17 episodes, it’s tough to believe they’re magically a reformed character in the eighteenth episode.
There were a lot of things I really liked about the episode, don’t get me wrong. But for me, the entire third season didn’t hang together the way the first two seasons did. This last episode felt like such an abrupt tonal transition from the darkness of 3.01 through 3.05.
I loved that the boys (and Sara and Felice) got a happy ending. But I was hoping for….more. This ending didn’t feel entirely earned to me. The first 5 episodes of the season dealt with the downward spiral so well, and then they tried to abruptly bring everything back up again in a single episode.
Apologies if I’m going against the general zeitgeist here. But at this point I’m simultaneously relieved my four faves all got a happy ending, and feeling let down. Because they patched everything up in the space of an hour, and it was a rush.
That said, there were things I thought were spot on. Sara and Felice were note perfect. Nils and Vincent being dismayed about August’s promotion to working royal was great. And Stella and Fredrika being sapphic, but still being classist, snobby bitches. Being queer doesn’t automatically turn someone into a nice person.
But in terms of the central pairing, I’m feeling a bit let down. Like they didn’t quite earn their happy ending and I’m not quite sure it’ll really stick in the long term.

I think one of the main factors in Wille finally breaking the cycle and getting out of the monarchy this season is Kristina’s health going downhill.
In s1, Kristina is presented as this unbreaking monarch and hard mother. She’s mad at Wille for the fight, takes a drastic measure and sends him away, and doesn’t ever break in face of Wille’s pleads to come back home to his family. When Erik dies, she barely breaks, expecting Wille to be as "strong" as she is. And then when the video comes out, when Wille is broken down by it and needs comfort and reassurance, she’s still unbreaking, pushing through and "solving" the problem easily. Kristina is his mother sometimes, especially when things go well, but the first and most important aspect she always puts foreword is that of a strong Queen who takes care of her country.
S2 is in the same vein, but as Wille molds more to her requests as a Queen, we see a bit more her motherly side. She’s still a strong Queen, a ruler who doesn’t back down from threats (Wille going to Instagram and abdicating) and solves those issues. By the end of the series, she was proud of him, showing how she still came on top, how her ways will make someone else be unbreaking, forming her son after her ways. Until the speech.
The speech breaks Kristina, and I think that this in turn breaks Wille’s illusions too. Because how can he, who doesn’t even like the monarchy in the way his mother clearly does, be expected to stay strong and just in front of difficulties and change? How can Wille, be able to do that, when they need some unbreaking version of Crown Prince Wilhelm? How can he survive this institution if his mother can’t? When Wille is already feeling so beaten down by it, and then he’s expected to take on the role in the next year at earliest? Seeing how impossible the role is for someone who was as strong in her convictions and as ruthless in keeping the good image of the crown break down from it gives absolutely no hope to Wille that he could ever have done it himself, unless he were to choose the path where he would decided to kill Wille to only leave place to Crown Prince Wilhelm.
And we saw it this season, Crown Prince Wilhelm is not a nice, caring, just and loving leader. Crown Prince Wilhelm is someone who is forced into a role he doesn’t want and can’t fit in, no matter how hard he tries. Crown Prince Wilhelm is the worst parts of Wille, someone that can’t grow and expand into the beautiful person Wille can be. Crown Prince Wilhelm would become just like his mother, except he is already starting to crumble. But Wille, on the other hand, is who he can be now that he’s decided to come out of there. Now that he’s rejecting that life for himself, if we can even call it a life. Wille is who he can be now that he decided he was more important than an institution that doesn’t care about individuals, that traps them and breaks them without giving them the choice to think if they want this.

I think what my problem with the 'bad parent Kristina' trope is, especially in fics, that it basically becomes synonym with evil Kristina which just isn't accurate. She is a bad parent, yes but she isn't this evil witch set on manipulating and destroying her son's life. You can actually be a good person and be a bad parent, those two things are not mutually exclusive. And you can do a shitty job at parenting but still love your child, there can even be affection and good moments, it's just not enough.
Another example is Micke - he's also not actually an abusive asshole but can be really sweet and he obviously loves and cares about his children very much. He wants them in his life and be there for them but that doesn't stop him from having his own problems and letting his kids down. You can love them but still fail your children. And even though you want what's best for them doesn't mean that you can provide it (in Micke's case) or actually act in their best interests (in Kristina's case).
Micke and Kristina are both very good examples on being good people with their own set of baggage who are bad parents that are trying in their own way but in the end simply can't be there for their children the way they should and sadly only hurt them instead of being the emotionally supporting guide they should be.
And it's okay to accept their complexities without erasing either all of their good or their bad qualities.

Since I’ve been rewatching YR yet again (for research purposes), I just realized something else about this contrast (although this has been pointed out by someone else before, more specifically by @verarin-i-love-i-love-i who created the gifs, but I kind of want to do my take on that):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look how excited Simon is for Wille to meet his mum. Look how warm Wilhelm is, how sweet Linda is…
And then look at how stiff and chilly it is when Simon meets the Queen… how unexcited Wilhelm is for Simon to meet his mum.
I know the circumstances are starkly different: at Parents lunch, Linda didn’t know that Wille and Simon were already a thing, and nothing terrible had happened yet, whereas Simon met the Queen after the video came out, after she told Wille to not be seen with Simon, etc. And I know that neither mum is perfect, I know they both have their shortcomings.
But how would things have realistically played out if the roles were reversed? If it had been Wilhelm introducing Simon to his mum during Parents weekend? If Linda has met Wilhelm for the first time after the video?
I’m guessing not very different.
How different would Kristina’s perception of Simon had been if she had met him before the video? Probably not very different.
How would have Linda’s perception of Wille been different if she had met him just after chaos ensued? Not by much, I bet. (Unless she met him after he denied being in the video, in which case I don't think she would have been very welcoming either).
There’s something there about first impressions and being selective about who has to make the best one, etc… and it’s not even about the two mums in question. It’s about the two people with the most power in each scenario.
Wilhelm might not have been the Crown Prince at that point, but he was always more down-to-earth and presented himself as such. He doesn’t expect people to address him a certain way or act differently around him, and he himself won’t behave in any way that is not his nature. So of course he would sit with Simon’s family and of course he would be nice and polite and smiley to the mother of the boy he likes.
Meanwhile, Kristina cannot put aside her title and protocol for even one second to greet her son’s sort-of-boyfriend, who has just gone through a traumatic experience too, and not come across as standoffish toward a literal child…
(I would still hold on to the theory that maybe she was wary of whether Simon might have been involved in the video for blackmailing purposes or something, but at this point she already knew that August was responsible…)
I know that for Kristina, at this point, Simon became a problem that she thought best to ignore, but that only further alienated her son from her. So not the best strategy…
I don’t know… it just makes me sad that Simon gets to be excited about them meeting, whilst Wille isn't, no matter the circumstances…

ok, so for some reason the german trailer for young royals 3 says that wilhelm has to be able to take over the throne in one year?? oh my god i am WORRIED?? i'm not sure whether it's just a mistranslation to better match the lip movements, but it could also actually occur in the rest of this scene on the show in swedish. that would mean we just haven't seen that part of the scene yet.
nevertheless, if it's NOT just an intentional mistranslation to match the lip movements, that would mean SO MUCH for wille (and simon)??
i believe that scene is a one-on-one conversation between kristina and wilhelm, where we already know they talk about avoiding any more scandals and his future role as the king. i also believe this is the scene where wille tells her "what if i don't want to?" - mentioning his thoughts about abdicating for the first time. now, if this is not a mistranslation, that would mean some sort of 1-year-ultimatum for wille. that would put A LOT of added pressure on him and influence his decision whether to abdicate or not.
the question is then, why would they give him that ultimatum? why does he have to be able to take over the throne in one year? how would wille handle that?? does something happen to kristina or to wilhelm?? what would that mean for wille and simon?? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
note:
the subtitles in the screenshots don't actually exactly match what kristina says here. she says: "Du musst in einem Jahr in der Lage sein, den Thron zu übernehmen."
the correct direct translation into english for that would be: "you have to be able to take over the throne in one year."
(just wanted to point out the difference to avoid confusion)

tbh we don't talk about the depiction of generational trauma in young royals enough. we see kristina lecture wille multiple times on the importance of keeping up an image, and how mistakes reflect on the entire family. erik, while a more positive figure in wille's life and more aware of his brother's anxiety, recites the same thing practically word for word. even when he's teasing wille about having a crush and encouraging him to hang out with simon, erik still tells wille to put on a persona for the rest of the school and mingle. in wille's fight with simon, he blurts out the same bs about his family's reputation etc. etc., but instantly regrets it when he starts to lose simon.
kristina's probably had the speech she teaches to her children drilled into her from a young age, since both she and erik had known from the start that they were the heirs. wille, as the "spare," has more doubts about these values and priorities, shown when he argues that he just wants a normal life in episode one. he actively pushes back against his family's demands right up until erik's death. wille's always idolized and admired his brother, so when the title of crown prince and its responsibilities are passed to him, so is the pressure to adhere to the crown's tradition.
the show does a great job of showing that even though wille really, really wants to break free for simon and for himself, all it takes is one short conversation with his mother from the cycle to drag him right back in. generational trauma is never easy to break free from, much less when you're an anxiety-ridden teenager with the weight of a country on your shoulders, unprocessed grief from losing your brother, and on top of that, the added trauma of just being outed in the worst way possible. kristina even tells him about her own "unfortunate romance" that ended because she was taught to choose the crown over everything else.

There’s an important detail that gets mixed up sometimes about the decision to put August next in line after Wilhelm and I think it’s a very important detail to get right: Kristina was not the one to put August next in line, it was the royal court.
She tells August about the crown’s decision and he says thank you, to which she replies something along the lines of "it’s not my idea" (in the English translation she says "Well, you should know it wasn’t my idea" and in the French translation she says with as much sass as she can, "It wasn’t my idea. Obviously." She then tells him she will stand by her son first and foremost but it is what it is.)
Why is that distinction important? Obviously, it does show that the Queen doesn’t agree with what August did (now, whether it is mostly because of the negative impact on the crown or on her son’s life is questionable, I think it’s a mix of both). Whether she actually stands by her son isn’t the point I want to focus on tho.
No, what’s important is that the Queen wasn’t the one to make that decision. We don’t know how it went, maybe she could have fought harder against the idea, but she does not have that much power to take the decision. And why is that important? Because it is exactly the type of thing Wille will have to deal with as a King. This detail of Kristina telling August —and thus us the public— that she didn’t want to put him in line for the throne but that what she wants doesn’t matter is there to show us that her hands are tied. I am sure she does have some decisional power on certain things, but still. This is an important decision that favours a criminal, and what other things like that have the court done during her reign? And before her? And if what the Queen wants doesn’t matter, which in this case is very reasonable —don’t put a criminal in line for the throne— then what Wille wants does not matter either. Because the royal court does not care.
This is the path that Wille is being led on right now. He will be in Kristina’s place once he is King. Was Kristina always so focused on the crown first family second? Was she once just like Wille, a bit rebellious and wanting what’s right, only for the royal court to mold her into what the Queen they wanted? Because if this is the case, if this is how it went for Kristina… what’s stopping anyone from trying to do this to Wille? And sure, he will have Simon by his side (they are endgame okay, thank you) but realistically, it’s important to note that Wille isn’t immune to this, and that Simon does not want that either. He loves Wilhelm but the royal court already fucked him over many times and it’s been what, 5 months? It could happen to Wille, because the royal court seems to have a lot of power. They already started with Wille.
So this detail is really important yes to show that Kristina stands by her son (although she does loads of questionable things, I have never doubted she loves her son but I have doubted that she stands by Wille first and foremost. we will see next season whether that’s true but it is interesting that she says it when Wille isn’t there to hear it. it makes me think she will try (succeeding is another thing entirely) to stand by him). But most importantly, this detail is there to show us the inner workings of the royal court, of the role and power the Queen/King holds, and show us how it will be for Wille. Of course, Jan-Olof is at the head of the royal court and putting someone with more humanity in that role would probably make the royal court more human, thus changing the monarchy, but yeah. I think it’s interesting and important! Kristina says word for word that it wasn’t her decision and it bugs me when people forget that because it’s important in so many ways that the decision comes from the court.

Any fresh headcannons? They were so good I miss them.
oh man of COURSE i can give you some fresh headcanons!! i’m glad you’ve been loving reading them as much as i love writing them <3
without further ado, pt 6 of wilmon headcanons
wille remains steadfast in thinking that simon is literally the prettiest, hottest, most beautiful person he’s ever seen in his life. the most sure-fire way to get simon to blush is for wille to remind him of this fact. wille also knows that simon doesn’t believe him, and he makes it a life goal to convince simon of how beautiful he is, inside and out
simon has no clue how to take a compliment, so instead of dealing with it, he usually tries to turn the tables around on wille, complimenting him instead. since wille doesn’t know how to handle a compliment any better, they get stuck in a strange yet adorable loop of hyping each other up that usually only ends when someone tells them to shut the hell up already or when one of them changes tactics to kissing instead
after getting back together and taking time to talk everything through, it’s rare that the two of them end up arguing or fighting with each other. they usually have little bickering disagreements and fond “arguing” but never actually fight. on the rare instances that they do, it’s a little bit like an explosive. both of them are stubborn as hell and get petty and give each other the silent treatment, all the while whining to their friends about how much they miss the other. no argument has ever led them to even THINK about breaking up, and they always manage to talk it out, but it’s torture for everyone who knows them if they’re fighting
it takes some time, but kristina does come around to their relationship and the fact that she can't control everything wille does. this comes as she watches how wille eases and grows with simon in his life, and from her finally understanding the points wille was trying to make to her in their arguments. there's still tensions and it's far from perfect, but they yell a lot less and wille feels like his mom is actually listening to him finally
after realizing how much it's helped him, wille convinces simon to also go to therapy. simon thinks it would be weird if he and wille went to the same therapist, though, so he meets with someone online
wille absolutely despises most vegetables but will eat any fruit any day any time. simon wants to gag any time he eats most fruits (except oranges) but will happily munch on veggies
they have board game nights with felice, maddie, rosh, and ayub. simon always hosts said nights at his house and they all work together to make dinner because ayub is really sick of ordering pizza
wille is the cheesy significant other who LOVES to slow dance with his partner. anytime they're alone and there's music playing, there's a good chance of wille pulling simon into his arms and twirling him around while humming the song into simon's ear. simon always pretends to be annoyed and teases wille for being able to dance like this but for having no rhythm if they're at a party, but he secretly loves it when wille gets that look in his eye and starts gently tugging simon up to dance
every time wille is in simon's room he greets all three fish by name and simon's heart goes into overdrive each time. partially because it's just freaking adorable that wille says hi to the fish and also because he knows that wille knows he made those names up on the spot and the fact that he both remembers them and uses them tells simon that that night meant as much to him as it did to simon
even though he quit rowing and wants to never interact with vincent ever again, he's also an aggressively proud boyfriend and will scream that from the rooftops. because of this, simon still goes to every rowing team event to support wille, cheering him on obnoxiously loudly with felice

Kristina is going to be so annoyed in Season 3. For multiple reasons. But can you imagine her finding out that the backup she got in part because her son is dating a working class boy has been dating or at least sleeping with the same working class boy's working class sister?? On top of the Jubilee speech, and the whole drug thing? She's going to have an absolute aneurism.

Kristina loves Wilhelm.
I know you're not wanting to accept that, but it's true. She does love her son. And she never had a problem with Wilhelm liking a boy. Her problem was always the appearance of it all.
Honestly, in my opinion, had Wilhelm not wanted to come out directly after a sex scandal, she probably would have let him. But because his coming out would have been an immediate side effect of a sex tape, she didn't want to risk the image it would paint of their family.
Kristina loves her son. She was worried about how his reputation would suffer.
Had the video never happened, I think Kristina would have come around to the idea of Wilhelm coming out. Of Simon and Wilhelm. But because the video happened, she was not willing to let his reputation or the family's reputation suffer.
