can we just talk about how august is one of the most well-written antagonist characters in modern media? he’s done some unforgivable things but you still see him as human. he’s not just an evil person to make the storyline more interesting, he’s so much more complex than that. from a writer’s perspective i absolutely love his character and his storyline so much. also props to malte gårdinger for playing him so well. wow. just. wow.

August getting the crown was a way to punish him for everything he's done
Since season 1 they have been repeating the same phrase "the crown is a privilege, not a punishment", Wille always felt the crown was a punishment while for August it was a privilege, when he still could not fully understand what it really meant to have it.
August had idealized the crown and Wille's life. Wille had his parents, he had Erik as a brother and he had the crown; In August's eyes, Wille had it all, but the reality was that Wille's life was much more complicated and stressful than August believed.
In his last conversation with Vincent and Nils, when August tells them that he is Wille's spare, his friends tell him something like "that's actually a bad thing, being just his cousin you enjoyed the privileges of being related to the royal family without the responsibilities, pressures, obligations, etc. This is going to be better for us because we are your friends and we can enjoy the privileges of being 'the friend of' but you are now going to have the entire burden of the title on your shoulders."
This is when the series shows us that that phrase that they had been telling us since season 1 was not true since the crown is a punishment.
Everything August believed the crown was was fantasy and idealization but the reality of what it means to be the crown prince is much more complex and harsh.
Wille managed to be free by leaving the crown and in a way imprisoning August. He could not report him to the police and have him go to jail for the crime he committed, but he could arrest him with that title and condemn him to an unhappy life.
Now Wille is free but August is not

if i had a nickel for every time i've audibly gasped upon hearing the words "it will pass" spoken during a breakup, i would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice

Speaking as of March 17, the day before 3.06 drops, I don't see August's arc in 3.01 to 3.05 as a redemption arc. Yeah, he's done one more genuinely nice thing in his life than before S3: for his third years, walking back from the homophobic sexual degradation that he experienced in his own initiation as a first year. Go him.
That's a good thing he's done, no question. But he still organized terrifying initiations (even if they weren't quite as bad as his own), he still got booze from Simon for the initiation party that he'd never had any intention of paying for.
August also allowed his lawyer to make that outrageous statement in 3.01 denying that the video was defamatory. The only reason he's not in jail awaiting trial on CP charges is because he has money and connections to make his criminal act disappear. That's not original, about the money and connections, but I forget who said it first. @unfortunate17 or @billfarrah , maybe... He was also smug rather than penitent while everybody was signing the paperwork.
Also, August persists in walking all over Sara's boundaries. He visits her at Micke's without warning, and doesn't apologize for the position he put her in. He uses that Conversation to remind her that she and he have similar dads, except Micke is alive and Carl Johan is dead. He's trying to play on Sara's sympathy. Even though the whole reason she feels she has to live with Micke is because of august's past bad actions.
And he repeatedly defies her wishes about not wanting to read his first year letter. He follows her out to the dumpster and insists on reading it to her to tug on her heartstrings. Even after she was clear she didn't want to read it and gave it back to him.
Now, was August being manipulative in S3 on purpose? No. But he and Sara aren't an example of a healthy relationship just because in S3 Wilhelm and Simon have an unhealthy relationship. I know I shouldn't use the word healthy, but at the moment I can't think of a suitable synonym.
So yeah, now he's done exactly two nice things in his life that we know of:
Buying Sara for Rousseau
Dialling back the sexual intimidation on the Forest Ridge initiations when he was a third year. Although the initiations August presided over were no walk in the park, so let's not give him too much credit.
I'm not saying he's a soulless monster. He's only 18 going on 19, he has time to improve before we write him off altogether. But he has STILL never apologized to Simon and Wilhelm for the sexual violation he inflicted on them. As soon as the NDA was safely signed, his own bad actions regarding the video were in August's rear view mirror.
So yeah, he listened to Boris and he tried to do a nice thing or two. But he’s still August.

August's story is not "good boy turned bad at Hillerska" but something so much more complicated.
I've been thinking a lot about August and the revelations in S3. About how Erik and co played an even bigger role in his indoctrination and development into a toxic mess of a young man than I had imagined - but how it's also important to remember that didn't happen in a vacuum.
Tumblr media
The new information doesn't cancel out the old, it just completes it.
August will have still grown up in the highly patriarchal, misogynist, elitist system of the aristocracy, with a very specific view of the world and his place in it. Idolising his father, whose tux he is fittingly wearing when he gets "awarded" the bad boy trophy. A man who taught him by example that death was preferable to failure - and seemingly turned him against his mother, as we could infer from S1E3. A mother who then essentially dumped him off at Hillerska after his father's death and left him feeling like the only woman in his life failed to support them both.
It's precisely these kinds of views, values and experiences from his early life that will have primed him for the culture of abuse at Hillerska (which his father will have also attended back in the day). Made him so desperate for the older boys' approval, vulnerable to their abuse, and susceptible to the awful patterns they impressed upon him. Erik and the others' part in messing him up is horrible and bigger than we thought, but that doesn't cancel out his parents' part any more than his own victimhood excuses his victimisation of others. He's got many intersecting and partially overlapping cycles to break, and I really hope we see him take more steps down that road on Monday.
I may write a longer meta post on him after the finale. For now, though, I'm just going to engage in some shameless self-promo and point to my old analysis post with more thoughts on his upbringing and worldview as well as the backstory one-shot I wrote in the run-up to S3. (It's set two and a half years before his arrival at Hillerska and focuses on his father's horrible influence, as well as his parents' marriage as a possible model for his seemingly contradicting views of women and romance. It remains compatible with canon apart from a few details - please check the tags for content warnings, though).

e6 predictions (they get more unhinged the further you go)
lake scene is NOT the final scene or a breakup scene
the wilmon car scene is the last scene

felice and sara will start to be friends again (during the neon party?)
hillerska closes down
fredrika and stella are temporarily pissed at felice for the closure
wilmon will get a “let’s stay together, we love each other and we can try to make it work” endgame
saraugust won’t be endgame

vincent and august are on not-so-great terms at the end of the show
the first year’s letters to their future selves come back into play
as per usual ludvig does nothing significant or useful to help wille or the plot
wille looks into a mirror and gives himself a tiny smile

simon writes/sings a song for wille for his real birthday present
wille learns the truth about where his orange sweater really went
by some miracle there is enough time in the episode for simon to go see boris himself

someone accidentally starts a fire during the neon party
august and vincent try to throw punches at each other during the table scene
marcus shows up at graduation for whatever reason and malin kicks him out

I keep thinking about August posting the video. When we now know that he is quite possibly queer himself, it shouldn't make sense. But we also know that that initiation was fucking traumatizing for him. He must have been hazed so badly for that. So my thoughts are he internalized the homophobia, and he was taught that liking men and being elite didn't go together. So Wille having sex with a boy meant he wasn't fit to be a leader. This was what August was taught.
And also, do you remember him saying to Sara: "Wille has everything!" when asked why he posted the video? Maybe it wasn't just the monarchy, Wille also got act on being queer!
AND Wille got to be popular and be liked, even when he didn't even try.
Maybe August genuinly wanted to help Wille when he arrived, by teaching him everything that he had needed to learn to be accepted. That it was important to follow the rules and accept the hierarchy, and it was important who you hung out with. But then Wille didn't need August's advice, those rules for getting through Hillerska didn't apply to Wilhelm. And on top of that he got to like men without being hazed for it.
He had everything August had ever wanted. And then he threatened/tried to take away everything August had fought so, so hard to achieve: his friends, his status and his safety.
Just to be clear: I am not excusing what he did, because that is not possible. I am only trying to make sense of it all, exploring what might have been going on in his head to make that decision.

No but S3 Ep1 of Young Royals is going to be so funny. Linda is sooo behind. Like Simon isn’t talking to Sara??? And Sara called the police to report a crime??? And she’s trying to make things right??? But Linda still doesn’t know what happened?? And Sara was dating August so that’s why?? And also the Crown Prince just came out to the entire country on live television ??? And mentioned Simon while he did it??? So there’s a bunch of drama there happening too???
And apparently Sara owns Felice’s horse from school now??? Her children have so much happening she’s gonna have to do so much catching up

"It's been a month since Young Royals officially ended and, if you're like me, you're still sobbing over that beautiful finale and missing Prince Wilhelm, Simon, and the entire squad from Hillerska (and Bjärstadt).
Don't worry, I've got some royally good YA book recs for your favourite characters from YOUNG ROYALS that you can add to your TBR to fill the space we're all missing after watching this fantastic series."

It is too funny to me that Wille heard Simon say “didn’t you guys make the rules” talking about the third years eating first and then decided “well if Simon doesn’t like this rule and I can undermine Augusts power I just HAVE to cause some problems” and only thought it over for, like, 3 seconds

I’ve seen too many people defending August. Sure, I feel bad for him too, but in what world does what happened to him at the initiation become a reason for him to record and then leak an explicit video of his underaged cousin? His actions had nothing to do with his trauma and everything to do with jealousy. He knew what he was doing was wrong and he never received any consequences or even APOLOGIZED until the very last second. He deserved what he got.
