KOTLC characters that I'm still scared of (besides Gisela):

- Luzia Vacker (woman is creepy and definitely knows some suspicious stuff)

- Fallon Vacker - Idk is he's good or bad, but he gives off a potentially creepy vibe and I think he is a source of some suspicious info or knowledge

- Alvar - the fact that he's not dead yet (although he was almost dead last time we saw him) makes me think Shannon is keeping him alive for a reason

(yikes, why are they all Vackers so far?!)

On that note,

- Alden - not because he's been scary so far, but because of all the theorizing that he's going to be a betrayer or double agent (not that I want this to happen; I personally still like Alden and think he's a good character that just doesn't always get it right)

- Trix - we may not fully know what his motives are, but he *is* still with the Neverseen. Plus, he really just seems kind of unstable. (Also, how do you have a name like that and not have some questionable moves up your sleeve?)

- Keefe - I love the boy, but he's traumatized and kind of unstable right now. What's he going to do next? Fight an ogre king? Run off to the human cities? Jump off a bridge? He repeatedly hurts himself and the people he loves, whether he means to or not, and I think he just needs to be shut away in Elwin's house for a good long time of reparenting and therapy.

- Fintan - he's unstable (there's a recurring theme here...) He may not be on board with Gisela and her schemes, but I still expect at least one more big bad, dramatic move from him before the series ends.

- Lady Zillah (Tam's shade mentor) Even Tam said she was creepy. Confirmed creep.

The shadows scare people — keep them in check.

No one will ever like you if you don’t stop being so weird about your abilities.

I hate it. So much.

Did I ask to manifest as a Shade? No. Am I a Shade nonetheless? Also yes. In that case, do I love my ability? More than anything.

Shades might be the next to go. I wasn’t even born when the Pyrokinetic ban was passed — and I don’t think I know any of them. But I can imagine it. The stares, for the ones who are known.

I get those stares too, when a patch of darkness follows me. But if a Flasher lights themself up, no one bats an eye.

What is this elven obsession with light?! It isn’t the only thing in the world — far from it.

After all, when all the stars have burned out, only darkness will remain.

Kotlc theory: Could Elysian be a shade?

We know that shadowflux can turn off abilities in some way because of what happened with Ruy. You know who else can turn off abilities? Elysian.

Building off of this, there has to be an Ancient shade that we don't know of yet, because in order to make illusions you need a flasher and a shade. We know that Luzia and Vespera worked together to make illusions back in the Ancient days, and we know that Luzia is a flasher, but Vespera is not a shade, so there's someone missing from the equation. The only shades mentioned in the entire series (and if I’m forgetting someone please let me know) are Umber, Tam, and Lady Zillah. None of them are ancients, but Elysian definitely is. So if Elysian is a shade, she could be that missing person.

It would also be very interesting if Elysian, the power source, was a shade, since the entire elven world is built around light. Something something light cannot exist without darkness

Well I can get behind it!! I hc oralie as aroace (and her and lady zillah have like never interacted) but that WOULD be an interesting pairing! Harsh shadows with Oralie's softness, they would be very powerful and formidable for sure! I could see them having study dates too

Thank you so much nonsie this is an excellent reminder I can't believe I let this scene slip my mind!!

but like that's the kind of thing I was talking about in my commentary on her character--she cares for people! Her intensity is how she cares for people. She sees Tam and sees a young shade taught to be afraid of his power, afraid of the dark. And she knows she can have a huge impact on his life for the better if she pushes him, if she gets him out of his comfort zone. Caring isn't always gentle or polite. Sometimes when you care for someone you push them harder than they push themselves, sometimes you challenge them and call them out or tell them off. Sometimes loving someone is intense and grueling.

How could Lady Zillah say she cares for other shades if she's not fighting for their reputation? If she's not calling out prejudice when she sees it? if she doesn't teach those drawn to the light that they're undervaluing the dark?

All of that contained in her squeezing Tam's cheeks "much like a grandmother would." She cares so much, and that's why she's intense the way she is because in the world the elves have built there's no other way for her to care. Anything less requires compliance, and compliance in the face of discrimination is not kind or caring.

Tam is under her wing right now, and it is now her responsibility to mentor him and to teach him to value himself. For him to learn that all the things he's heard about light isn't true. it's not everything and he does have a place in their world. he's important and valuable and worth something. He's young and impressionable and has already been outcast. He's defensive and vulnerable.

And Lady Zillah cares so much about him. He is a prodigy, one of the youngest elves to ever manifest (naturally) and one of the strongest shades she's ever seen. Pushing him is how she shows how much she cares, because if she doesn't do everything she can to help him reach his potential and expand the limits of his ability, to help heal his mind from the fear he's taught himself, then how can she say she cares?

Lady Zillah is not this hard, immovable character who's snobby and against normal elven values like she's first presented, she is incredibly devoted to what matters to her, and sometimes that means she needs to be blunt and pushy. I really do hope we get to see more of her
