who were they?

what was the horrible thing that had happened to umber?

why didn't trix leave the neverseen after umber's death?

did they join the neverseen together or separately?

were they a bad match?

how did they meet?

were they banished? or did they leave of their own volition?

did they worry about each other?

was trix ever put off by umber?

did they know each other before they manifested? is that why trix thought highly of umber even after she manifested as a shade?

so many questions . . . would love to hear your thoughts . . . theories . . .

The glimpses we get at their life are truly fascinating--and they do answer some of these questions! According to my skims (and some help from the wiki), it's said Trix joined for Umber, so whether at the same time or after, they were connected--though he was less devoted than her, and he didn't leave because it's what he thinks she would want--but that doesn't mean he'd do anything for them. He still has limits. It's also possible he has nowhere else to go. And he knew her before whatever happened to her, apparently, though we don't know what it is.

I don't have a super strong basis for this, but for some reason I've always thought of whatever happened as something done to her--as in, an active choice someone made, compared to an impartial accident. And since she was a freakishly powerful shade in a world where that's not a good thing, that perhaps it had something to do with that; that maybe she was messing with shadowflux and someone (family, maybe?) saw that and were scared. And so they tried to force her ability/the shadows out of her. So she wouldn't be a shade anymore and would be something "normal" and "better" and stop messing with extreme darkness. But since an ability is an essential part of you that cannot be undone, all it did was hurt and break her. Especially since abilities are centered in the mind and the elven mind is so fragile. And so she's broken (not shattered sanity, this is metaphor) and it's made her spiteful and hateful at the world, making her more devoted, while Trix is more focused on her than the world.

And after what happened, perhaps they fled on their own, or the Neverseen sought them out somehow knowing what had happened and provided an escape into their organization. Perhaps Umber was too broken to do any of it and Trix desperately did it on their behalf, and as Umber healed she became super devoted, and all Trix could do was watch as she became something new and try and stay by her side even though he didn't really want to be there. In my head he's a pretty typical guy his one quirk that led him down this evil path was loving Umber more than everything else.

There is some limited basis for my thinking all this, but again! Not a lot! And I'm not super familiar with their characters, so some things may be contradictory. But this is how they exist in my head at the moment

sorry this is a lot in one ask lol

a) she’s gonna be the piece that connects the Black Swan to the Neverseen. We’ve already seen it in Stellarlune - how she had a pretty realistic motive to join the Neverseen and how she introduced the group to Trix who was also painted in a sympathetic light and also offered more backstory to Umber than just being a horrible killer. Through her, we’re likely going to learn more about other Neverseen members and even possibly redeem some of them.

I also just think she’s cool and I like her story and I hope we get more of her :D

b) well, you know I’m a hardcore sokeefer, and I have reasons for that - and it’s not because I hate Fitz! I think he and Sophie have a chance to repair their relationship - just not a romantic one. He’s unfortunately ruined that, and he’s slowly accepting it. Sophitz was never going to to work, in my eyes. I ship Sokeefe because I genuinely love how their characters bounce off of each other and how they help each other through their darkest moments. They truly know each other, and they help each other evolve.

Now, enough of ships! You asked how I thought about it in the narrative - sorry for getting sidetracked. And, well, I’ve sort of accepted that the romance plot of the books is a major part of the story and it’s actually pretty integral to Sophie’s character growth. She’s a teenager trying to be a normal person when she wasn’t built to be one. Through her relationships, she learns how to trust people in different ways and learns how to take off the rose colored glasses once in a while.

Would I change everything? Well, Flashback is probably my least fav book bc of the romance stuff. I don’t hate everything about the book - I f fact, the parts where it slows down and we get more nuanced character moments are great - but it’s too much for me.

Also, the canon ship names get old after a while :/

c) I doubt we’re gonna get a whole ass overthrow, but the systems are definitely going to be changing by the end of the series. Considering how many secrets about the Ancient Elvin world we’re bound to learn through Elysian, I could 100% see Sophie just going up to the Council and saying “this is fucking wrong.”

d) hmm.

- Jensi needs to be Talentless

- Elysian should be a human/have brown eyes/not be a normal elf

- Fallon and the Vacker Legacy is likely going to be connected to Elysian

- Alvar’s gonna show up only to die in front of Fitz

- Sophie is going to kill somebody

- fork man needs to be humbled

- Prentice probably knows everything that’s going on and likely discovered Elysian
