The biggest misstep on the show was never having these two hook up. Lena and Kara are already giving each other heart eyes every time they're in the same room and they had more on screen chemistry together than they did with any of their canonical love interests. (Especially Mon-El. I like his character, but wow did pairing him with Kara not suit either of them at all.)

The second biggest misstep was taking so long for Kara to tell Lena that she was Supergirl. After a while it clearly became about the drama and the reasoning for not telling her - or Lena not figuring it out herself - got stretched ridiculously thin. I do understand that when Kara tells Winn (after knowing him for... two years? at that point) he was the first person she'd ever voluntarily told her secret to since arriving on Earth. It was a big deal for her, even if the show never acknowledges that. (Which it totally should have.) So Kara struggling with telling Lena is totally in character for her. But she learns over and over that she's strongest when her friends are there to support her and she's constantly denying Lena that place in her life which just... doesn't make a lot of narrative sense after a while.

The show's missteps with these two aside, I adore how soft these two can be with each other. They're both such strong people and supportive and kind... and they make each other better. Each pushes the other to rethink their biases and to see things from other perspectives. And they each feel safe with the other, letting down walls and finding comfort in each other.

Kara gives Lena the acceptance she needs to be the Luthor who does the right thing instead of the hateful one. And Lena gives Kara someone who doesn't expect her to be a superhero all the time.
