this year has seen the resurgence of my obsession with fanfic, so it’s probably appropriate for me to take a look back at the fics that stayed with me the most, long after i closed the tab.
this is an incredibly subjective list and i by no means think these fics are better than others. these are just fics that i continue to think about, that i have reread in chase of the feelings i felt when i first read them, or that impacted me in a way that i can’t explain. there’s no real set criteria. there’s no real rhyme or reason. these are just my 22 favorite fics i read in 2022*.
these fics come from multiple fandoms and contain a wide array of genres / tropes. they’re listed in alphabetical order by author. some summaries i cut down due to length.
*these are fics i have read/reread in 2022, they weren't all published in 2022
Check, Please!
Here We Are, Two Strangers by CoffeeStars [rating: explicit | words: 16.4k | read: december] The year in which Kent Parson, famous NHL player and renowned (read: lonely) party animal, reads trashy erotic novels, fails to learn Russian from Alexei’s mom through elaborate contemporary dance, co-adopts a dog, and fucks his way into domesticity and, surprisingly, a functional relationship. .
Better With Time by foryouandbits [rating: mature | words: 118.5k | read: june] Over six years Eric is faced with several difficult life lessons, but there is also joy, laughter, love, and self-discovery. More than anything Eric learns that sometimes in life, you really can only get better with time. .
if life is a movie then you're the best part by goldstandard [rating: explicit | words: 16.1k | read: june] Eric Bittle has one mantra as he relives March 29 over and over again - don’t get hit. If only things were that easy. .
paradigm shift: a triptych by hockeydyke [rating: mature | words: 21.1k | read: november] Halloween will be Bitty and Jack’s first major public appearance as a couple, since Bitty had missed family skate at the beginning of the season because he’d had to attend a little media day of his own for Samwell. So yes, while they’ve both answered plenty of questions since they first kissed at center ice, they haven’t actually done so together yet. The media is going to eat this right up. That’s why this has to be perfect. That's why Bitty has to be perfect. .
maybe i'm waking up by idrilka [rating: mature | words: 157.9k | read: march] It’s almost funny. All he ever wanted was to play hockey, to play in the NHL, to win the Cup. This—Samwell, the team, the Haus—was supposed to be just a detour, but now it feels more like a destination he failed to realize he’s already reached. .
live through this and you won't look back by nighimpossible [rating: teen | words: 4.1k | read: october] The worst part about falling in love with a straight boy is definitely not watching him date girls. No, the worst part about falling in love with a straight boy is that you never even had a shot. .
don't you look charming (here in the eye of a hurricane) by onawingandaswear [rating: teen | words: 9.6k | read: may] In 2009, Jack Zimmermann doesn't just walk away from his future, he packs a bag and runs. .
Happily Ever After, After All by RabbitRunnah [rating: teen | words: 23.8k | read: october] Jack Zimmermann and Eric Bittle have been happily married for years. Or so their kids think. Now that their secret's out, a wedding is in order. .
C'est à ton tour de te laisser parler d'amour by sylviarachel [rating: teen | words: 10.0k | read: july] Sure, Gabriel’s about to meet a two-time Stanley Cup winner who’s also the NHL’s very first out queer player, whose posters he had all over his bedroom walls as a teenager. And also his husband the best-selling cookbook author and YouTube celebrity, who was the first out queer captain of an NCAA men’s hockey team and led his team to a championship. But no need to be intimidated, right? .
No Matter How Small by weneedtotalkaboutsherlock [rating: explicit | words: 125.4k | read: april] "Elliot," Eric says, "this is Jack. Jack, this is Elliot." .
out in the open by wit [rating: teen | words: 35.0k | read: april] One thing is for sure: this isn't what Bitty expected to happen when he first DMed NHL forward Jack Zimmermann. .
How to Blow a Fuck Ton of Meal Points in 1.5 Semesters by YourPalYourBuddy [rating: teen | words: 5.2k | read: november] The cashier stares at the computer screen as they pick up their trays. “Damn,” she says. She glances at Jack and hands his card back. “You’ve got the most meal points I’ve ever seen.” .
Hockey
The Salt King by ladyblahblah [rating: explicit | words: 112.5k | read: september] Sidney dreams, memories of a past life intruding on the one he's living now. But there's no such thing as selkies, and no such thing as a love that lasts across two lifetimes. Until, of course, there is. .
Fastening One Heart to Every Falling Thing by thefourthvine [rating: explicit | words: 51.5k | read: june] Geno can't. Sidney won't. .
King and Lionheart by thehoyden [rating: explicit | words: 56.1k | read: july] Sidney’s wedding day doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. When he’d bothered to imagine it at all, he’d thought of a nice June wedding in Nova Scotia, outdoors with the sun streaming down. He hadn’t imagined this hurried affair on the tarmac on a rainy and unseasonably cool day in early September, a month after his twenty-fifth birthday. .
From Wood and From Ivory by vamm_goda [rating: mature | words: 91.3k | read: september] Sidney's always had a very precise plan for his life: Captain the Seabirds to a championship, make it out of high school, and make it big in the NHL. Then Alex Ovechkin happens. .
Lions in Arms by xihale [rating: mature | words: 4.7k | read: december] “I want to fuck in bathtub full of cash,” Ovi says. “That is entirely unsanitary,” Sidney doesn’t say. .
Attack on Titan
Midwinter by ackermom [rating: teen | words: 59.2k | reread: february] In the deep midwinter, the villagers of Wall Rose gather to celebrate the new year with song, dance, and theatre. The Solstice Stage Festival is a light in the dark for many, and this year, the trainees of the 104th Cadet Corps will take part as a lesson on community relations. For some, the stage offers the spotlight they've always wanted. For others, it's just another way to hide. .
Soul Sisters by ackermom [rating: teen | words: 166.4k | reread: june] "Sororities are for straight girls," Ymir had said. "I could never join a sorority." Then she met the vice president of Zeta Chi. .
And here, I cry by charryklss [rating: general | words: 1.2k | read: january] Reiner reminisces in front of Annie as a friend and as a stranger. Together, they cry. .
Echoes by scioubeez [rating: explicit | words: 108.7k | read: january] "You've been ruining my life ever since I met you." .
Wind in the Sails by vidnyia [rating: teen | words: 60.7k | reread: january] Determined to honour his grandfather's final wish, Armin boards the Ship Sina in search of a new life. However, before his adventure can begin, he must survive the dangers of the ocean during the vessel's two-month journey across the Pacific. Under the disdainful watch of his bunkmate Jean Kirstein, Armin struggles to adapt to life aboard the eccentric ship, beginning to question everything as the wind leads him in a direction he never could have planned for. .
NOTE: technically, my fic reading resurgence started in late october 2021, but since that's only two months i decided to throw those fics in this list. midwinter, soul sisters, and wind in the sails i read in 2021, but i also reread them this year. that's why i'm including them.
there we have it! my favorite 22 fics of 2022. this year has truly gone by in the blink of an eye (it feels like just yesterday i was crying my eyes out over echoes, when really i read that way back in january oh my god), and i can't wait to see what fics 2023 brings.
onto the new year!

Cinnamon Snail
An @omgzineplease fic preview (Zine releases for free June 5th)...
Ships: Eric "Bitty" Bittle/Jack Zimmerman, Larissa "Lardo" Duan/Shitty Knight
Rating: G
Summary:
It's ten years since graduation. While looking after Lardo and Shitty's new bundle of joy, Jack starts to wonder what the rest of his life with Bitty might look like.
(Preview under the cut)
“En kop kaffe og en kanelsnegl, tak,” Shitty said as clearly as he could, hoping his American accent didn’t mangle his Danish. The café he’d taken Lardo to was in the center of Copenhagen, and he was getting by on the smattering of Danish he’d picked up from a month of language app study.
While watching Danish crime dramas during late-night feeds with Timmy, he'd become acutely aware of how one part of Denmark pronounced words varied vastly from the other side of the country. In some ways, it made trying to learn Danish through an app a hit-and-miss exercise.
“Am I right that the translation of ‘kanelsnegl’ is literally ‘cinnamon snail’?” Lardo asked as they finished ordering. They were both having the same, though Lardo would be doctoring her coffee with ample spoons of sugar once it arrived.
“You would be,” Shitty replied with a smile. It was twelve hours and counting since they’d landed in Denmark and as he waited for his cinnamon roll and coffee, Shitty tried to ignore the worry attempting to crawl up the back of his spine.
The trip marked their first prolonged absence from Timmy since he’d been born nine months ago. And Timmy was the first anything that Shitty found he couldn’t be completely chill about. I guess that’s what it means to be a parent, Shitty thought as the coffee bean grinder in the corner kicked into gear. Constantly worrying and hoping for the best.
“How do you think Bitty and Jack are doing?” Lardo asked, pushing back her long black hair. The undercut was fresh and only two days old. It wasn’t that Lardo was vain, Shitty had found in their marriage, it was that she liked meeting her preferred sense of style as closely as possible at all times.
Shitty flashed back to a week prior when pureed carrot and sweet potato had become spattered over the suit jacket he had returned home wearing that day.
“I’m sure they’re doing fine.” Shitty looked at his watch and estimated it was just coming up to four in the morning back in Rhode Island. He tried not to think about the jet lag that was still waiting to hit him.

and because I am itching for the next chapter: Oh My God Check Please
And it’s good, it’s great even. Bombastic, you could say, but Jack isn’t much for loud expressions of joy. But he carries Bittle’s words in his heart like they’re his own hearth-fire, spreading warmth throughout his limbs, carries them as light against the darkness, as stalwart protection against Lardo’s increasingly louder silence.

What's your favorite kind of pie? Or baked good?
Happiest of happy birthdays to Eric "Bitty" Bittle. This little comic is such a joy! I found it via it's website long before it was published physically. Of course I already had the traditionally published books, but when the year 4 kickstarter rolled around, I *had* to back for one of my favorite series! And I'm so glad I did!
Aside from the zines and extra content Madison comic, I think the thing I was most excited to receive was the Fals championship shirt! I'm a casual hockey fan as it is, but I'm always down to support fictional sports teams. Especially when merch is involved and I can confuse the hardcore fans. 😉
As to my favorite kind of pie? Peach. Same goes for cobbler, with the addition of blackberry, as well.

...these were my interesting times!
Another side of the Venice Biennale. 44 days on-site. The sea birds, cafe paradiso, visiting Tintoretto and Bellini, sleeping in a floating city and the hard working people of Venice were my saving grace!

Grazie Giovanni Sanzone! I'm especially happy he wrote about three paintings from "Mutatis Mutandis & The Gadfly" (a large group of works from the swamp - not yet seen).

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Check Please! (Webcomic) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Eric "Bitty" Bittle/Jack Zimmermann, Larissa "Lardo" Duan & Jack Zimmermann Characters: Jack Zimmermann, Eric "Bitty" Bittle, Larissa "Lardo" Duan Additional Tags: Miscommunication, Mutual Pining, jack's a bartender, bitty hit on him and thinks jack didn't notice, (jack did), flirting via flashcards Summary:
Jack has never been accused of being oblivious. At least not recently. He can tell the blond guy on the other side of the bar is hitting on him; it’s something in the curve of his mouth when he says “Vodka lemonade,” in the path his eyes take down Jack’s — admittedly tight — shirt while he runs the guy’s card. It’s even clearer when the guy says, with a hand on his chin and looking right into Jack’s eyes, “Don’t suppose I could get two tall sips of water tonight. Do you think I could?” _______________________
Zimbits from Jack's POV :) From this shitty-check-please-aus prompt: "Jack is the hot but surly bartender at Bitty’s favorite bar. He seems to be immune to Bitty’s flirting, but really just has an excellent poker face and doesn’t want to seem unprofessional"

a million miles away
for @zimbitsweddingofficial and zimbits wedding week day three: after the wedding! a little slice of life from the first morning of jack and bitty’s honeymoon.
this is the last scene of a much longer fic that i'm hoping to publish someday soon when it’s a little more polished, but for now please enjoy this fluff fest!
Jack wakes as the tide is coming in.
Their slice of the world is blissfully quiet that morning. There’s only the sound of the waves crashing outside, the cries of birds circling high above them. Maybe the private beach was a little bit over the top, but—well. Jack’s last name does come with its occasional perks, and he’s determined to let Bitty enjoy them too.
(He’s still waiting for the right time to tell Bitty that he’d like to change it, though. Someday soon. He’s been thinking that Jack Bittle has a pretty nice ring to it.)
Jack takes his time about coming to life, mostly because he’s tired but also just because he can, luxuriating in the feeling of soft sheets against his skin. He intends to take full advantage of the fact that, for the first time in weeks, he has nowhere more pressing to be than in his husband’s arms.
His husband, now. Jack blinks up at the ceiling. He’s still not the best at putting words to feelings, but the quiet drumbeat of his heart names this one for him: joy, joy, joy.
The husband in question is still asleep on Jack’s chest; the rising sun dapples his back, turns his hair to gold. They’ve woken up together hundreds of times, but everything feels new to Jack this morning: the way their legs are tangled together, the warm expanse of Bitty’s bare skin against his, the soft wash of his breathing. Jack appreciates each sensation as it comes, tries to tuck them away for the next time he’s stuck in a lonely hotel room halfway across the country. After years of short weekends and stolen moments, waking up next to Bitty like this is something he knows he’ll never take for granted again.
He lets himself doze off, enjoying the warmth and the quiet. When he wakes for the second time, it’s to Bitty, who’s regarding him with the most unbearably fond smile Jack’s ever seen on the face of a man who’s only half-awake. God, Jack thinks, he’s beautiful; he’s the sun; he’s the porch light left on after dark.
He hums a little when he sees Jack blinking back at him. It’s a deep sound, appreciative. “Good morning,” he says, sleep-soft and slow.
“Bon matin,” Jack replies, smiling. “You been up long?”
Bitty’s eyes are still tired, but they crinkle at the corners when he smiles back. “Only a minute. ‘Bout ready to drop again, to be honest.”
Jack has to agree. He’s not surprised by Bitty’s exhaustion—feels it himself, the grind of these past few weeks, in the pull of his muscles and the gritty ache behind his eyes. He’d be very happy to stay wrapped up in the circle of Bitty’s arms forever and never have to move again.
Luckily, Bitty seems to have the same idea. He curls in close, presses his lips to Jack’s cheek, his nose, the corner of his mouth. They lose themselves in it; ten minutes pass, or maybe an hour, and Jack doesn’t care in the slightest either way.
Finally, though, he huffs out a gentle laugh. “Bits.”
Bitty pulls away to look at him. “Jack.”
“We’re married.”
This time it’s Bitty who laughs, bright and affectionate. “Yeah, we are.”
Jack casts his mind back over last night, over the sequence of events that have led him to the ring on his finger, to this boy and this bed and this golden morning together. He’s a little hungover, but not too much, and there’s a lingering, pleasant burn in his muscles that speaks to a night well-enjoyed. He remembers holding hands on the plane and ordering champagne to the room and laughing a lot, reveling in the quiet magic of being married to each other at last.
“Jack,” Bitty murmurs after a long moment, pulling Jack out of his thoughts.
“Bits.”
“I think we wasted our time with all that lookin’ for a place to go,” he says, and rests his chin on Jack’s chest with a satisfied sigh. “All we really needed was a bed.”
Jack props himself up on his elbows. “Well. We don’t have to get out of it today,” he says. “If you don’t want to.”
“Hmm,” says Bitty, pretending to consider. “Is that a promise?”
Jack has to feign nonchalance as much as he can. This is, he thinks, about to be the best vacation of all time. “Why don’t you come up here and find out?”
Bitty laughs, a breathless sound like the shimmer of sunlight on the water, and then his lips are on Jack’s again, and Jack never wants to let go.
So, at least for today, he promises himself he doesn’t have to.

Just got such joy out of imagining a meeting between Eric Bittle (figure skater turned hockey player, everyone was waiting for him to fail but then he was both competent and lovable, son of a football coach, sometimes pies just appear, has an accent that bewilders everyone around him, friends with a guy with a mustache) and Ted Lasso (American football coach turned soccer football coach, everyone was waiting for him to fail but then he was both competent and lovable, also always baking, has an accent that bewilders everyone around him, has a mustache). Delightful. And after seeing what the sports media did to Jack, Bitty would tear the British media to SHREDS over how they responded to Ted's panic attack, which would be fun to see
