Reader is disappearing into the woods for long hours, then comes back home exhausted. Johanna is getting worried and curious about what reader is doing. Usually, reader would love Johanna to go with her on her walks in the woods, but not this time.

Reader is actually building a tree perch or tree deck (I don't know what it's called, but it looks like the pictures), as a surprise for Johanna's birthday. On Johanna's birthday, reader decorated it with flower bouquets, lanterns, and candles, making it look like a fairy tale setting, with a smile picnic if that makes any sense

"i'm just going for a walk," you call out, letting the door slam behind you. johanna peeked her head out from the kitchen, but saw you were gone and shrugged. she felt a little hurt because usually, you would go for walks with her but she brushed it off and went about her morning routine.

when this habit continued for a couple of weeks, she began to grow upset. you'd walk out the door, planting a kiss on her cheek and waving goodbye and she'd be alone again; moping around the house, she would grumble angrily to herself about how she was going to confront you. then when you return home, cheery and embracing, her face would lighten up and she’d ignore how she was feeling.

then, the hours grew longer and you weren’t returning quite as happily. you made sure to hug her, or kiss her, but your mood was dampened and you were beyond exhausted. johanna began worrying something really bad was wrong; the situation left her conflicted. did she stop you from going out so you wouldn’t be tired? or let you do what you wanted? the idea of losing you scared her immensely, that she sent finnick a letter asking him for help. he came a week later with annie and their son, saying that he would stay until after her birthday party, and help her sort out the problem. the second you were left alone with him, however, you managed to convince him to disappear with you as well.

johanna had never been more concerned. what were you two hiding from her? were you cheating on her with finnick? she shook her head, refusing to let her mind wander down that path. you would never do that to her—could never do that to her. so she’d end up playing with finnick’s son and talk to annie all day until everyone else showed up. katniss and peeta—along with haymitch—rocked up the day before johanna’s birthday, eager to help. while katniss and haymitch gave awful advice (johanna didn’t want to snap at you and demand you tell her what happened), peeta encouraged her to wait a little longer; she wondered if you’d told him something, and now she was nervous about what she was supposedly waiting for.

it wasn’t until you finally disappeared in the early morning of her birthday that she cracked. she followed you, while you crept down the dimly lit trail. you occasionally placed a candle on the ground and lit it, before continuing on your way. it was a little while before you finally stopped in front of a large tree, with a gorgeous wooden deck. she hides behind a tree as you climb up the ladder and began setting up the blanket, placing the food on top and adding a few finishing touches to give it the rustic vibe johanna loved so much.

“you can come up now!” you announce, watching johanna peer out from behind the tree, as she hesitantly approached the ladder. she looks up at you, signalling for her to join you, before swiftly scaling the ladder and kissing you once you’re reunited at the top. “happy birthday, johanna,” you whisper against her lips.

she smiles, her blush prominent now as she realises how embarrassing it was to suspect something was wrong with you, when in reality you’d been working on this for her birthday. “thank you,” she replies, pulling away and sitting down properly. she takes one of the sandwiches you’d prepared and munches down on it. “did you build this all by yourself?”

“i had a little help,” you confess, shrugging your shoulders and plucking a bunch of grapes—before throwing them in your mouth one by one. she can’t contain her snort, rolling her eyes playfully. “the best thing about sharing friends with you, is that they wanted to help me build and prevent you from seeing it prematurely. it was a good idea throwing a party and inviting them all, otherwise i’d never have gotten this done in time.”

johanna smirks, shaking her head, “that explains a few things,” placing her head in your lap as you softly stroke her hair.

“happy birthday, my love,” you whisper, kissing the top of her forehead.

she smiled up at you, “it is when you're here.”

It’s been #1 since the album came out in 2020 because its hauntingly beautiful and about saying goodbye to a partner and asking if they will walk with you down the aisle when it’s your turn to pass as well. Well, its a bit more ambiguous than that but I’m melancholy and always amassing OTP songs sooo…

2. The Bell - Eye of Melian. This band is perfect if you’re a Tolkien nerd, someone who likes film scores, or a skyrim stan. All about time/life and how it moves on no matter what.

3. Pearl Diving - Auri. My favorite band. Whimsical escapism, gloriously benevolent vocals that make me want to dive into the sea and marry a selkie.

4. Hetken tässä kaikes on järkee - Elastinen ft Johanna Kurkela. This one is just fun. And its in finnish — which I’m trying to learn. Also Johanna is so pretty in the music video that i literally start sweating.

5. Hearts Of Old - Altamullan Road. They never got to tour due to the pandemic, but they did get to perform this about a year ago on SuomiLOVE and its hands down my favorite live performance of all time. So sweet and loving, their voices are absolutely heartstopping together and I’m literally getting a passport the minute they tour.

Pls tell me what makes so enjoyable for you?

i think on my first read the story definitely managed to subvert my expectations; the twist and turns caught me off guard (which makes sense for a 13yo i guess but i like to believe that even for more experienced readers the story went ways they didn’t expect). to me the tension that this book creates is just something that draws me in (a tension that is created by an instability you can find in every aspect of the narrative). because the stakes rise—this is not just a story about an arena and 24 kids fighting to the death anymore. it’s about an entire nation and its people now. the internal politics take up much more space, you can see the oppressive system at work much more intimately because you see that it extends into every aspect of life in panem. it’s every and influences everyone. not even the capitol‘s citizen are exempt from experiencing the consequences of it in one way or another. you see how, intentionally or unintentionally, some are complicit in their own oppression while others, just as intentionally or unintentionally, rebel against it. and then you have the ones that actively fight it despite the threat of violence and death. you see how fear and propaganda are used to ensure obedience but it also clearly shows you how this method of control is playing with fire…. because desperate people have nothing to lose. for me, cf manages to but thg into a context that gives these games even more (symbolic) meaning. and ofc tensions also rise BETWEEN and WITHIN characters. the everlark dynamic is especially delicious to me in this book (some of these scenes are like bread and butter to me i‘ll never get over them). haymitch relationship with both peeta and katniss is so interesting ESPECIALLY when you know how he’s essentially betraying them both in different ways for half of the book. i also adore some of the side characters we‘re introduced to (finnick and johanna mean so much to me <333). and when it comes to katniss‘s inner world i think the tension collins creates shines the most. the first person narration lets you experience katniss‘s turmoil in a manner that has you realise how torn she is between different impulses and wishes and hopes and fears. and that makes so much sense given the situations she‘s finds herself in throughout the book. and ngl her reluctance to engage with this revolution and accept the role the rebels have assigned to her makes her such an interesting character to me. it’s so realistic how she deals with this entire situation. and what’s even more tragic is how realistic it is that friends and enemies and strangers alike us her for their own agenda without ever even really think about if that’s something she wants. because they can justify it as being ‘for the greater good’…..

the plot covers so much ground as well, from the victory tour to the quarter quell, and both just adds to add to our understanding of panem as a political entity. to have them back in the games again is exciting as well because technically things shouldn’t be different but they are, and they are not what you expect, which just adds to this feeling of instability that the book as a whole evokes in the reader. and at the same time there are light and funny and sweet moments this book that don’t feel out of place because they still have a space in this world that’s only at the brink of rebellion but not quite there yet. and these moments just make you feel for these characters even more because you want That for them. you want them to be happy and safe but you know that they won’t be because the scale is about to tip one way or another and you Know their situation is precarious.

idk there is just so much There from a textual analysis standpoint as well. it’s hard to explain why i love it so much tbh. i just think it’s really well written and very exciting almost in an anxiety-inducing way because you’re trapped in katniss’s head and she’s being drag in all these different directions by all these different people without really knowing what’s going on. like maybe my reread thread will give you some idea (it’s by far not everything that stood out to me. the post would have to be at least six times as long to come even close. i mean i don’t think i even mentioned some very basic stuff like the overpolicing and police brutality in district 11—a district with a majority of black citizens). there is also my VERY short goodreads review. i wish i could list you all the reasons this book is my favourite in the series but like you probably realised i am struggling to break it down even a little bit.

to start, i think my fav thg character so far is johanna. for reference, i've watched the movies for the first book and catching fire, so that's where i'm gonna base off my answer. i loove johanna so much- her personality is similar to mine and her movie quotes are iconic as well. johanna swearing in her interview!!??! female rage queen. johanna stripping in the elevator!?!?!?! also queen behavior. everything about her is so amazing to me

for my fav scenes & lines, it's def peeta's whole interview (from the first book, pre-arena). "she came here with me" PLEASE MARRY ME AGGHHHHH i love men written by women so much. and then the scene where rue helps katniss to drop the tracker jacker nest (i absolutely adore rue. she is so sweet). that's rlly all i can think of lol

about juliette- i do not get how people find her annoying. first of all, she is so sweet and did not deserve anything that happened to her (which was negative). dude, so many people in her life had viewed her as a monster; her own parents sent her off to an asylum, and constantly told her & acted like she was an insane monster. plus literally everyone stayed away from her and treated her like she was barely a living being, which she started believing. ofc she will be scared to form a bond with anyone and/or trust people because of her past experiences. ofc she had a low self-esteem. she is quite literally a traumatized girl and her personality is very easy to understand. she doesn't deserve the hate she gets

Hi there! I’m so sorry if I’ve taken a while replying! I’m not sure when you sent this ask along, but I’ve been on a tumblr sabbatical until a couple days ago. Thank you so much for sending some love for ATW my way! <333 I have most of the last chapter and epilogue written... gosh, it’s like 43 pages of stuff. In all honesty, when I look at it, I think most of it is total crap because it is cheesy and awkward and riddled with all my usual excesses. As Mark says in Love Actually about his creepy-ass wedding video, “It still needs... a bit of editing.” I’ve also been sitting on it because what I’d really like to do is convert and rework the entire story into an original novella, but life hasn’t given me much time to be able to do that. I dunno. I’ve got some analysis paralysis going on. Anyway, I hate feeling like I have disappointed anyone, and I do want to be able to share with the people who have been supportive and so kind, so here you go... a taste. It might never see the light of day in whatever finished product I do post, but hopefully you enjoy it! Thanks for asking! <3

“So, ah, where are we off to?” she asked, trying to sound casual as she tugged anxiously at the hem of her dress. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed him glance at her hand, a crooked half-smile tugging at his lips. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “What’s so funny?” 

He zipped his bag back up and slipped the strap over his shoulder, shaking his head as his smiled broadened. “Oh, nothing.” 

Sure. More like, ‘Oh, bullshit.’ 

Her eyes became slits so narrow it was a wonder she could see anything at all. She imagined throwing daggers at him—one, then two, aimed right for his heart. Direct hits. He wouldn’t see them coming. “Spit it out, you.” 

He chuckled softly and bit the inside of his cheek, clearly deliberating how to answer. “It’s just... something cute you do when you’re uncomfortable. You do that with your work uniform too, and now this dress—did you want to change into something else? Would it be better for you? Because I definitely don’t mind waiting...” She watched his mouth as he spoke, the way he licked his lower lip as his words trailed off. In the dim lights of the hall his lips were a deep shade of pink, and that lower lip of his was wet—so deliciously wet. So kissably, deliciously, irritatingly wet. “Or is it... because of me?”

The elevator cables groaned as they hoisted the elevator up the shaft, the doors grumbling as they opened to let them on. Neither the cables nor the doors groaned as loudly as Katniss would have liked to. How mortifying that he had noticed that about her. 

She stepped onto the elevator to buy herself some time to answer—exactly two precious seconds to pull her shit together.   

“No… I’m fine,” she began, considering how much to admit. Johanna had already aired some of her dirty laundry without scaring him away, so what was the harm in airing a tiny bit more? 

She leaned against the wall of the elevator, using the handrail to support some of her weight. Peeta stepped in behind her and took a spot against the opposite wall, facing her. 

Katniss sighed. “I mean, you’re right. I’m not comfortable. It's just… I haven’t been on a date in a while.” She pressed the button for the lobby and lied, “It’s not you though, specifically. Per se.” 

But it was him. It was everything about him—his smell, his voice, those eyes of his and the way they were looking at her right now. It was the way her entire body broke out into a fucking Stephen Sondheim number at his slightest touch. If she didn’t care what Peeta thought—if he’d been any of the other guys she’d been set up with over the past several years who had never bothered to call her again after a round of awkward drinks or a stilted conversation over dinner—it wouldn’t matter. But here she was with him, worked up into knots simply being in his company, and all she wanted was for him to think she was a bow. 

She winced, feeling intensely vulnerable, and looked down at her feet, scrambling for several moments to find the words that would make him believe he wasn’t the problem without making herself seem too pathetic in the process. “I could be wearing sweatpants right now and still be like this,” she admitted. “There’s something about first dates, I guess.” She bit her lip and stared at a spot on the floor, at the remnants of a half-dollar sized wad of gum had been scraped off by the building’s superintendent sometime in the last few days. “I’m terrible at them.” 

All of that was true enough. 

“Me too,” he said. 

She looked up at Peeta in surprise, frowning in incomprehension like he’d rattled off a string of binary code to her, a bunch of 0s and 1s that ought to spell out something basic and essential but achieved nothing at all.  

He shrugged, looking a bit abashed. “Well, it’s true.”

She made a soft scoffing sound, incredulity oozing out of every one of her pores. “I find that a little hard to believe.”

The elevator lurched as it approached the ground floor, the doors opening to let them off, but neither of them seemed to notice. 

“To be fair,” Peeta chuckled, “until tonight you found my existence a little hard to believe.”

I'm only 2 episodes shy of finishing Season 3 but I REALLY need to get this out my chest before I continue...

The Forgotten Lake is by far my favourite episode of the season—I'm really positive that this may be (or already is) THE BEST episode of the season (and heck there's still an hour long finale for me to get to but EVEN THEN)

A LOT to unpack in that episode but a Johanna-centric story is categorically one of the best thing to happen to this series and I didn't think they could make us love Johanna more than we already did but my god she is just PERFECT HHHHHH <333 Nothing could've prepared me for getting to see all the sides we've seen of her in this ep from best mum as she always was, to talented artist to survival-horror protagonist I'm losing my mind over how much I adore this woman 🥺

Not with Amy, of course – he means, with Amy in the sense that Amy is in his presence, sitting next to him in the passenger seat, anxiously drumming her nails against the dashboard and checking her watch every twenty-two seconds (not that he’s counting).

(i’ll hold your hands)i really wanted to write some cute plot-less festive fluff! i actually wrote about…40% of it for christmas 2017 but never got around to finishing it until roughly a year later… it was also definitely inspired by johanna’s wonderful festive fic series that she wrote last year because it was so adorable

8. did any real people or events inspire this fic? (call me, maybe)nope! i think i just wanted to challenge myself by writing some pre-show and i just loved the idea of poor jake trying to nagivate the unwanted crush he has on his newest coworker :’)

5. what part was the hardest to write? (there’s no horizon)this whole fic was actually pretty difficult to write because it’s an actual narritivsation of that kiss scene rather than a missing scene, so i had to watch the evidence lock-up kiss like forty times (not that different from a regular day tbh) and try and accurately translate their body language and microexpressions into actual words which was a fun challenge!
