Ok, pen reviews for my recent jetpens purchases go
• unfortunately they Lied about the pilot G-Tec-C4. Claimed to be really good smooth pen, and the less expensive, non japanese, but exactly the same version of the Hi-Tec-C.
The ink skips through every stroke. I am saving full judgement for when I start a new sketchbook, though I'm not sure if slightly more textured paper will help (my current sketchbook is really smooth paper!). I want it to work out so bad! So many people love this pen (yes, This pen, not its more expensive japanese counterpart)
I'd get any other gel pen, but I love the tiny little point of the G-Tec so much....please god... Anyway I keep trying to use it on every page to test it out but it just keeps skipping, and I bought 2 so its not even a one off, they both skip! Holding out hope that its the paper or the oils from my hand but it has not made it to Main Drawng Utensil status.
Scribbles made with the G-Tec-C4

• Fortunately, they were NOT lying about the Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip pen. This shit rocks. The line variation you can get with it is very good, I'm writing tiny microscopic notes in my sketchbook with the point of the fine tip, and it being a Hard tip is awesome... I love line width variation that comes with brush pens but actual brush pens don't give me that same Control especially when making tiny little lines, and i LOOOOVE control.
I'm waiting until I have more things to buy off of jetpems, so that I can buy more without my order just being like 3 pens. Because thats what the order I'm making this post about was and it felt so wasteful and humiliating. The only "bad thing" I can think of is the ink could be a tiny bit darker, but it's not a Huge difference between my darker inks/pens, it just looks 5% more faded.
Drawings made with Tombow Fudenosuke.
Image provided by jetpens, this is the Hard - Black version, not soft brush.

togglesbloggle: I would also be open to a list for pens as well, if you've got strong feelings about the best pen/paper match.
I started typing a response to this, and then noticed that literally right this instant this link is on the front page of Hacker News. I was going to link to JetPens' guides anyway since they're quite good, and in this case they've saved me even more trouble. Weird bit of synchronicity, that. The only comments I'll add to the above guide are
1) keep in mind that pen bodies and refills are separate concepts, you can find people online who sell nicer bodies than the default plastic ones for all of the refills listed above. My personal go-to non-fountain pen is a Karas Kustom Bolt with a G-2 refill (which is sadly a lot more expensive now, I got it on Kickstarter early backing for half the present cost. But there can be found similar things around the internet for a lot less)
2) that guide doesn't go much into getting started with fountain pens, but they have even more guides for that which I mostly endorse.

For the fanfic asks :) 💔🎶🛠
Thanks so much for asking!
💔 Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?
New Skins and Old Memories was my first Milathos fic, and it’s so sad and bittersweet, but I love it anyway.
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
I do always have music on when I’m writing. I have a handful of albums and playlists I always go to  when in doubt, but I often listen to specific things for whatever I’m working on. For instance, for the Lawrence of Arabia fic I recently posted, I made a playlist of opera duets with men, so lots of Verdi, particularly La forza del destino.
🛠What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?
I love writing by hand. And I love my fancy journals and fountain pens. A friend just sent me a bunch of ink samples, so lately I’ve been using them in my Pilot Petit since it’s a reliable, cheap fountain pen. And the latest notebook I’ve been using a lot is this Kanso notebook from JetPens. But  also love my Lamy Al-Stars and Kaweco Sport pens and I have plenty of Moleskine and Paperblanks journals I use regularly. Because I’m not a great typist, I’ve taken to photographing my writing and using Google Lens to transfer it to Microsoft Word. It has some weird hiccups due to being evolving tech and my sloppy handwriting, but it’s saving me a ton of time.
Thanks again for asking! Folks should feel free to send me more.

Enheduanna, talking to strangers, and the best blue pens
Happy first Friday of November! If you’re in the US, at least most of the US, Daylight Savings Time will be this Sunday. Hopefully though, not for too much longer.
I have a short list for today and as always, I hope that you find something enjoyable for your Friday going into the weekend!
We released a newsletter last Friday, if you would like to check it out, you can do so here.
The mysterious Viking runes found in a landlocked US state - BBC Travel, the title could be mildly misleading as the markings found haven’t been confirmed across the board as being Viking runes. Although, the more I learn of ancient history, the more I think that we vastly underestimate the millions that have come before us. So, in light of that, I would like to be able to agree with Gloria Farley and say that they are indeed Viking runes.
The Best Blue Pens | JetPens, I am of the belief that one can never have enough writing utensils. Especially blue pens. JetPens has put together a great list of some of the best blue pens. My personal favorite is the Zebra Stainless Steel Retractable Ballpoint Pens.
Why We Should Talk to Strangers More - The Atlantic, I have found this to be infinitely true in my own life. When I have had conversations with strangers or strangers have approached me for conversation, it more often than not affected my day in the positive. Even when the lady in Walmart wanted to have a political conversation that was not appropriate for Walmart, I still felt seen and like I was participating in my wider community. If anything, growing up in MS you expect to have at the very least one conversation a day with a stranger. “In the past decade and a half, professors have begun to wonder if interacting with strangers could be good for us too: not as a replacement for close relationships, but as a complement to them. The results of that research have been striking. Again and again, studies have shown that talking with strangers can make us happier, more connected to our communities, mentally sharper, healthier, less lonely, and more trustful and optimistic.”
Michael J. Fox Opens Up About Painful Injuries, Recovery and Kind Acts That Changed His Life (people.com), I find it helpful to see how different people with different experiences and troubles handle their lives. It’s sort of like gathering a toolkit for life. And I really like Michael J. Fox’s perspective.
Enheduanna: The world's first named author - BBC Culture, this is a fascinating story and it brings me immense joy, hopefully it will bring you joy as well.
Here's What's on the Dunkin' Holiday Menu 2022 - Parade: Entertainment, Recipes, Health, Life, Holidays, the holiday drinks are my favorite – from any coffee place. I haven’t had Dunkin’s holiday drinks but their Fall drinks were really good and I am looking forward to trying them out!
Starbucks holiday beverages arrive on Nov. 3, I went November 3rd to have a chestnut praline in a holiday cup. Apparently their holiday tumblers and cups also came out that day and you could accrue extra stars or something to that affect and the line was quite long. But, my two favorite Starbucks baristas were working, and a good barista is 100% where it’s at, so my drink was perfectly made and enjoyable, I had the “Ornament Wonder” cup . And, I found out a “trick” that you may already know about….one reason that drinks can vary so wildly between Starbucks stores-at least the flavored drinks, is that there are specific pumps for specific syrups and flavors and they often are placed incorrectly. Which when placed incorrectly, alters the taste of the drink noticeably.

Stationery Review #2
Going with a more recent purchase, I love the Kokuyo Beetle Tip Dual Color Highlighter!  I picked this one up at Hightide Store DTLA almost entirely for the beetle logo at first. This baby comes with two highlighter colors, the tip resembling the horns of a kabutomushi beetle of course, and makes switching highlighter colors super easy. I like that I can also use both of the tips for a thin double line which is fun for making wavy borders or highlights. They're not super thick tips, so be prepared to possibly double highlight some text depending on the size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also a quick review scan on jetpens tells me that these highlighters in particular are great for fountain pens as it doesn't smear the ink (allowing for a few mins to dry first)! Someone else also pointed out that it saves on pen case space since it's two highlighters in one, which is a big plus for someone who chronically outgrows their pen case super fast. It also comes in some fun soft colors which I might pick up in the future. All in all, cute highlighter!

What do you think of Hobonichi planners? I noticed you had one. They're SO expensive, so I'm wondering why they're so worth the cost? I do like the way they look though...🤔 (this is pet-diary fyi 😁)
Hello! I have a… thing… about planners… so it has taken me a while to reply to this.
I have used Hobonichi Techo A6, Hobonichi Cousin A5 Avec (two 6-month books), and Hobonichi Weeks. They have their differences. I love they way they look, but the only one of these three that I used consistently for at least two months was the Cousin A5 Avec. I’ve since ordered two other planners and given up on them, and am unsure about what I’ll be using for next semester/year.
Why are they worth the cost?
It’s all about the paper. Tomoe River paper is a premium Japanese paper that is much thinner than standard copy paper. It is resistant to a lot of bleeding and feathering, making it great for people who like to use fountain pens, watercolor, calligraphy pens, highlighters, etc. It is smooth as heck and I always want to touch it. The only pen I’ve personally used that bled through was a Copic, which bleeds through everything. The paper is just amazing.
I’ll also mention the features. It lays flat, no matter where you are in the year. The A6 Techo has monthly layouts and a page-per-day. The A5 Cousin has monthly and vertical weekly layouts as well as the page-per-day. The page-per-day feature is something you don’t see in many planners, and the tomoe river paper lets you journal, write notes, paint, or do whatever every day of the year.
The main reason they are expensive is probably that they are imported from Japan, which means you are either ordering online from the Hobonichi website or from a secondary website like JetPens and therefore covering part of the import cost. Why is this worth it? You can get either a Japanese language or English language planner, but the Japanese is cute and fun to use if you’re interested in or learning Japanese. It’s also one of the only ways to get your hands on the paper.
What about a cover?
Covers are not necessary, but are cute and fans collect them like mad. You can order an official Hobonichi cover with your order through the Hobonichi website or JetPens, on Etsy, or through various facebook groups. Or you can just use an A6 or A5 notebook cover! Just search around on youtube for “hobonichi A6 in ____ cover” and you can often find examples of people using other brand covers on their Hobonichi. Otherwise, you can find offbrand covers on Etsy, Aliexpress, etc. For a minimalist cover, I used a Midori A5 Notebook Cover on my Hobonichi A5 Cousin Avec and it fit perfectly, keeping my notebook thin and portable.
Tumblr media
If you want to save money but try them out…
I really suggest looking at Etsy or Facebook Hobonichi BST groups. You can often find a single Avec  book (Jan-Jun / Jul-Dec) in either the A6 or A5 size for lower cost. Some people also sell their lightly used planners if they decide it wasn’t for them. This is also where you’ll find a large community of used and collectible covers.
You can read tons more details comparing all of these planners, and the Weeks version, on the Hobonichi site!

Ink Review: Rikyu-Cha by Sailor
Hey guys! Sorry for the late update but today’s ink of choice is Rikyu-Cha, part of Sailor’s Jentle series which suppose to depict colors from Japan’s season shifting. It was later re-released to as part of Shikiori line on smaller glass bottles.
Tumblr media
Image sketched on Rhodia pad with brush and Wooden Custom Pen with German Bock nib
Sailor is one of the most well know Japanese ink and pen manufacturer from their own line of pens and ink to exclusive inks made for specific department stores such as Bungbox/Bungubox.
Tumblr media
Tested on Rhodia Pad and Borden & Riley Paris Paper for Pens paper.
Tumblr media
Swatch made on Strathmore 300 Smooth Bristol Pad
I managed to get the 50ml bottle when it was on closeout at Jetpens.com ( some other stores such as Anderson Pens are still carrying it at the moment). This ink is now sold as part of the Shikiori line which comes in a 20ml glass bottle instead. What impresses me about the old 50ml bottle compare to the new classy 20ml ones was that it comes with an ink feed that I can fill my pen without any possible accident although 20ml definitely saves me a lot more cubicle spaces. My first impression with this ink (and other Sailor ink I’ve used so far such as Sailor Jentle Sakura-Mori and Sailor Shikiori Shimoyo) is the strong plastic like smell coming from either the bottle or the ink itself. The ink’s color is fantastic as it reminds me of dried tea leave that my grandma likes to brew into drinks in the evening. When diluted it gives a full gamut of brown, dark green and a tinge of blue that would be interesting if you like to do a wash with it.
Drying time: Very Fast (3-5 seconds)
Water resistance: Pretty good (Will fade but still very much readable)
Feathering: None
Bleeding: None
Pricing:
$15-20 (50ml) at Pen Chalet, Anderson Pens and The Nibsmith
$12 (20ml) at Jetpens [Clearance]
(All pricing listed are taken off online information at the moment this post was written and only to be served as reference)
Thoughts
I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews on this ink and the actual product does not disappoint me at all. It flows really nicely on my M size bock nib and maybe next time I will fill this ink on a broad or even flex nib to fully showcase its range of colors.
This week’s color theme is blue and green so stay tuned for the next update!

Ash’s Inktober Art Supply Megalist
a Because Inktober is such a huge event and because it’s relatively new and doesn’t have a huge masterlist of art supply lists associated with it, I have decided to post and maintain a masterlist of art supplies ranging from inks, pens, and sketchbooks to use as well as art supply stores online and other useful hints based off of my own, my friends, and other helpful artists who have given me pointers on this site.
INKS
Author’s Note: Anything called India Ink is waterproof by default most of the time. Shellac based ink tends to have a sheen, though there are exceptions. Most if not all color ink aside from black and white will not be light fast.
Dr. PH Martin’s Black Star India Ink
It is water proof and lightproof and does not contain a sheen like most other illustration inks, which means it won’t have light reflections when you scan or photograph your work. I have used it in dip pens and brushes, and it works well even when diluted with water to create shading effects. It has a rich black tone. Not entirely copic proof.
Koh-I-Noor Water-resistant Inks
These inks are water-proof and ideal to use in dip pens. It isn’t lightfast, at least the color versions aren’t,  but the black and white inks are. Black and white are opaque colors while the other colors (numbering 17 in all) are transparent, similar to watercolors. Unlike a few others on this list, they come in plastic bottles rather than glass.
Yasutomo Black Sumi Ink
It’s a good brush ink, although there are some drawbacks. One would be the fact that if exposed to air long enough it will get thick, as well as the fact that it has a strong scent due to the fact that it does contain various eye and skin irritants, so don’t get any on your hands. It is very waterproof though, and works nicely if you know how to use it. It is not copic proof. It does come in a plastic container. There’s a vermillion color I haven’t used, but looks nice and bright.
Windsor-Newton Inks
Basically the go to for all and any illustration inks you’ll ever worked with. This is the ink you’ll use in art class (at least the art classes I’ve been to). They come in two different sets, though you are most likely to see the first set. They also come in metallic colors, which is a good thing if you want to go fancy. They are waterproof, but not light proof, so care must be taken when displaying them. They come in glass bottles that do not tip over.
Deleter Black 4
The ink for manga artists. It’s not only a rich solid black, it’s also resistant to fading from erasers, as well as being copic/marker proof. Excellent to use with dip pen and brush. Also waterproof, like most Deleter brand inks.
Keimei Manga Pen Ink
Not only is it waterproof and copic proof, it also has a matte finish, excellent for scanner in your work.
PENS
Staedler Pigment Liner
Lightproof, waterproof, and smear proof. Similar to microns, but from what I’ve heard better. It is erasable though on certain surfaces. Does not bleed through and won’t dry out for 18 hours if left uncapped.
Sakura Pigma Microns
Won’t feather, won’t bleed through, and a favorite of many artists. It is not Copic proof however, so try to use them after using copic. I’m not too big of a fan of these, as the think nibs do break if you use them on sharp curves and such.
Marvy Le Pen
This is becoming a surefire favorite of mine. Not only is it quite cheap, it’s also waterproof and copic proof (the permanent pen however, is not copic proof). It has a stronger nib than the Micron and it does comes in a brush tip, unlike a few others.
Windsor-Newton PITT
One of the more famous pens used for illustration, the PITT pen comes in a variety of nib sizes as well as brush pens. They are waterproof, lightfast, and acid free. They are not copic proof however, and should be used after a copic drawing.
Pentel Technica Stylo Pen
I think these pens are servely underrated. Not only are they a cheap alternative to a lot of other pens on this list, they are also waterproof and copic proof. They come in a variety of sizes and excellent with any medium, including watercolors. However you need to watch out as the ball point can get clogged up. I own at least four and they have lasted me for at least a year.
Pentel Color Brush Pen
Waterproof and really neat for those who like using brush pens, these are nice for those who travel around and use ink. It’s technically a brush pen with a reservoir of black ink you can squeeze out. Warning, there’s a few setbacks, as it does take a while to dry if laying in thick amounts of black ink. It is not copic proof, but can be used on top of copics. A good note of caution is not to squeeze too hard as the ink will drip right out. If the ink runs out, you can refill it with your own ink.
Copic Multiliner
If you are using copics, you should definately have a number of these at your disposal. They are waterproof, smearproof, and won’t bleed through paper. The other good part is the fact that they come in a SP version which can be refilled and reused, although they’re more expensive.
Sakura Gelly Roll
The white pens are excellent for making highlights and contrast.
Watercolors and Markers
Copic Markers
Literally the go to markers and my favorite markers to use overall. They come in a wide variety of colors and types and can be refilled. However they are pricey, but I feel like all in all they are worth the extra cash. Many come in pre-made sets in certain color combinations, though I would start in either a blue palette, a red palette or a grey palette to test them out. Like many markers, they will bleed through, and I would use either marker paper or a thick paper to use them on.
Sharpies
Not too much of a fan of these. but they are cheap and found everywhere. They come in a range of sizes and types, but like most markers, they bleed through paper. They are waterproof and fast drying.
Windsor Newton Watercolors
These come in either pans or tubes, but I use a mix of them. The ones I use are cotman, which are the cheaper version and comes in a plastic travel palette kit which can be put in a lot of places. I have added a number of tubes, due to the number of colors avaliable. They have rich and vibrant colors. The pan colors don’t mix as well in my experience, but the tube colors work lovely. The fact that they come in travel kits is the main reason why I put them on here.
M. Graham Watercolors
A professional set of watercolors, and they have super rich colors. They only seem to come in tubes, which aren’t as good for travel.
Ecoline Liquid Watercolors
I wasn’t sure to put these in inks, but given that they are called watercolors, I’m putting them here. They are dye based and bright and come in wide mouth jars. They can also be dluted with water. Unlike any of the watercolors here, you can use them in dip pens and airbrushes.
Sketchbooks
Author Notes: The paper to get is paper that is 100 gsm and up, as anything 100 gsm and up will hold to water better. The higher you get the better the paper will hold to washes and won’t buckle.
Moleskien Cahier Journal
I personally find the whole Moleskien brand pretty expensive, but they are recommended by the Inktober site. However, you’ll need to watch out as ink won’t dry fast and markers will bleed through the paper
Bee Creative Mix Media/Marker
I really like this paper as it’s thick and holds up to watercolors and markers well. It also doesn’t warp as badly as the watercolor version of this sketchbook. It has a thick black cover but it is wirebound so watch out for shoving it into backpacks and bags.
Bee Sketchbooks
These tend to have thicker paper, and good tooth for pen and ink, copics and illustration.
Canson Sketchbooks
A lot of these are good for watercolors and pen and ink, especially the Mix Media Art Book, Artist Series Mix Media, and the field books. The XL series is also great for those looking to save a little for a big bang.
Derwent Sketchbooks
These are a thing, but unfortunately the only one I can find at the moment is one that has premade designs in it.
Online Stores
Oozak
I have used this store in the past and it has some great deals on Copics
Jetpens
A new store I have discovered, it offers a large variety of pens, inks, and nibs
Blick’s
A very famous art store, they do offer gifts in your online purchases and have some good shipment deals
Poses and Reference
Senshi-Stock
Offers a lot of awesome poses, must  be on DevArt to view. They also have a Pateron if you want to support them.
Pose-Maniacs
Rather limited, but good for some poses
Photo Reference for Comic Artists
A site I just discovered which has lots of royalty free pose references ranging from action and everyday to clothing reference
Music
Dark5 Radio
Offers dark syth-techno tunes
Electronic Gems
Some really good tunes here
Artzie Music
Mainly Future Funk and Vaporwave
Walt Ribeiro
Ever wanted to hear “Take on Me” done by an orchestra? This is the place
NOTES
Have at least two erasers at your disposal, one of them should be a kneaded eraser as they lift graphite marks and do not leave a dusty mess.
It’s alright to draw with pencil first
Take breaks to drink water and stretch every 30 minutes or so
It’s good to invest in B nibs and manga art nibs if you plan on using bottled ink. Maru and school points are the best for manga and illustration style.
Round and liner brushes are the best brushes to use for inking lines
You can plan ahead your drawings, sometimes it helps.
Listen to music while drawing helps in getting some ideas.

It has been a while! ( I always seem to say this but its true (’: )
Here I am, making another masterpost in the hopes that this will help every single one of you :) This time, I will be rambling about stationery because I know it is quite a big topic in the studyblr community and i get quite a few asks about it.
I will try to give some links, but you will typically see most things in your local stationery store (hopefully)
** for muji stationery, i did not link the australian website since you can’t buy online for australia :(
Disclaimer: I personally love pens and stationery, so usually most of my pocket money will go towards that as I feel as if it encourages me to study, you don’t need to have a lot of black pens if one is going to be enough. It all depends on the person :)
Study Essentials (simple with some of my personal thoughts):
Black pen
A black pen is a good foundation for writing you  notes, they are plain and simple and can easily be manipulated (highlighted, underlined or annotated with colours to make specific things stand out)
Pens can come in many forms: ballpoint, gel, or ink pens. I smudge with pens but I don’t like the outcome of ballpoints so I choose gel pens.
Some branded gel pens include: Pilot G-2, Zebra Sarasa & Uniball Signo to name a few
There are so many simple black biros at any store that you can get for very cheap!
Red/Coloured pen
I personally think a red pen or coloured pen is essential for marking or to highlight key/other points and annotating
Some cheap coloured pens are the Papermate Inkjoy, other slightly more costly are the Zebra Sarasa ones, the Pilot Juice and the Muji Gel Ink pens
Some brands like Bic and Papermate have a 4 coloured pen so if you did not want to carry 200 pens, you can save room with 1!
Pencil
Wooden or Mechanical pencils???
I like mechanical personally because you don’t need to sharpen them lol, I use the Muji one but I also like the Pentel twist one (kinda expensive but very sturdy)
HB lead is much lighter/harder than 2B :) (2B is softer, and produces more pigment)
There are lots of sizes, the most common being 0.5mm and 0.7mm (0.5 is smaller)
Eraser
Any eraser is fine, I like the Staedtler ones (but they are expensive so I never buy them lol)
I just get the cheap $1 ones from morning glory (very good quality tbh) there is no need to spend so much on an eraser bc it will end up getting lost tbh HAHAHA
Ruler
Many come in 30cm or 15cm, get the size that will fit in your pencil case!
Great help for maths and art!!
White out
There are many types of white out; liquid, tape and even stickers
I personally prefer the tape version because I hate the smell of the liquid and also I always smudge liquid white out, but whatever suits you!
Highlighter
There are many highlighters out there in the market; the mildliners, the sharpie ones, the stabilo ones, there’s a highlighter in every brand tbh
Mildliners are more expensive and aren’t necessary but I really like them for the diverse colour range
A VERY cheap alternative to the mildliners are the Daiso soft markers (LOVE THESE), they have the same shades (less shades though) are only one sided but they give the same effect as the mildliners for a fraction of the price! bless
If you don’t like the bright neon highlighters; try the Daiso soft markers, the pilot frixion erasable pastel range or even the mildliners if you want to splurge:)
Extras that are not necessary but may be useful:
Scissors
Glue stick/Glue Tape
Stapler
Sticky tape
Sharpener (I use mechanical pencils so never need one)
Common Studyblr cult favourites:
Just a warning that even though everyone seems to love these products, it does not mean that you will, try them out at the store and don’t waste your money because you may not like them! (I wasted money buying the staedtler fineliners cries)
Staedtler Fineliners
Stabilo Fineliners
Mildliners
Pilot Juice Pens
Tombow Brush Pens (quite pricy be warned)
Artline Stix Brush markers (I quite like these but make sure you buy the BRUSH markers if you were planning to do brush lettering as I have seen people buy the wrong type, cheap alternatives to the tombows)
Moleskine notebooks
Muji Gel Ink Pens
Stores:
~ = stores I have bought from
* = I have a discount code which you can save 10% off your purchase: ACADEHMIC10 ! there is also free worldwide shipping c:

So, I’ve watched the new interview with Yuzu and the thing I recognize from the video was:
Tumblr media
The Pilot FriXion Ball 4 in White (I believe he’s writing with 0.38 ink):
Tumblr media
No, I am not sponsored by Jetpens.
I swear, Yuzu really loves the Frixon line from Pilot (as expected of Mr. perfectionist.) He’s been using them for a while and the earliest I can tell is from High School. And what’s not to love about this pen line!? You can make mistakes with your pen and erase the ink!
I, myself, also use Frixon pens, which are a saving grace to me because I make a ton of mistakes while writing. PLUS, Pilot manufactures some of my most beloved fountain pens, the Vanishing Point and the Custom 823.

Jeffrey Phillips (aka Jeff the Peff) entered the professional illustration game in his mid-20s, although he’s been drawing ever since his family relocated from India to Australia when he was a young teenager. Back then, he drew to observe the new sites he found himself surrounded by.
It was only in his 20s that Jeff enrolled in a Design and Multimedia course. Now a full-time freelancer, Jeff’s clients include organisations like Aesop, Facebook Australia, Ernst & Young, MYOB Australia, Studio Round and yes, even The Design Files. We asked Jeff to take us through his go-to tools.
The tools i use · Jeffrey Phillips
1. Noodler’s Bulletproof Black Fountain Pen Ink
This is a handcrafted black ink that is archival, fade resistant and water resistant when dry. It is pretty rare to have a waterproof fountain pen ink, so these are quite highly prized and can occasionally become sold out. I keep a bit of a stash to last me through dry times.
I think it’s good to be consistent with the type of ink, especially when you are combining different pens. Different inks fade in different ways. Some fade to a bluish black, others go a bit brown. So if you aren’t consistent, the drawings can start to look a bit funky as they age.
Find it here.
2. Pentel Water Brush
There are loads of brands and styles out there, with different sized tips and so on. Both of mine are filled with water, but the grey one also has a few drops of black fountain pen ink for a nice grey wash.
Find it here.
3. Daler-Rowney Ivory Sketchbooks
These tick every box for me. The hard-cover is great for support, the pages are perforated for easy removal, they have a lovely ivory colour and work really well with my pens and inks. I often try other sketchbooks but these are my mainstay. Unfortunately completely unavailable in Australia, but you can find them on eBay.
Find it here.
4. Namiki Fountain Pen
This one has a 14k gold nib (fancy!) which has a nice amount of flex for creating variable line widths. Gold nibs are great. They give your lines a wonderful wobbly character! Also means you can swap five pens of different widths for a single one.
The Namiki Falcon is a very delicate pen and so probably not recommended for beginners or if you don’t use fountain pens regularly. An ill-timed bump or wrong move will probably permanently ruin the tip. So it can be stressful to use but the lines are AMAZING and worth it. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
5. Lamy Fountain Pen with an EF Nib
This is my main drawing pen. It’s a no bullshit, reliable and versatile pen that has given me years of great drawings. It’s much easier and safer to use than the Namiki Falcon. A great beginner pen actually. I originally meant to get the yellow one and accidentally bought the neon-yellow – but what are you gonna do? I had a second one as a backup but lost it on the NYC Subway. I wonder what it’s up to now. It’s funny when you lose the backup and not the thing you wanted to back up. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
6. Pentel Pocket Brush Pen
This pen must be one of the worlds most popular black ink brush pens. Every illustrator I see on Instagram seems to have one. Even though the black ink cartridges it comes with are great, I have replaced the ink in them with my standard Noodler’s black for consistency. Here it is in action.
Find it here.
7. iPad
I have the 12.9inch iPad Pro second gen. The second-gen version has a slightly higher screen refresh rate than the first gen. If that makes a difference to you. I don’t know if I can tell! It also has 256gb of Memory – I heard that the higher memory allows you to run larger files without impacting performance.
I use it with the Apple Pencil which is great – except the lightning port you charge it from is the same one that the iPad also uses. So god help you if both are flat.
Find it here.

Jeff’s TOP shops, Apps and Tips
Favourite apps related to your practice?
AstroPad Studio – an app that effectively turns your iPad Pro into a Wacom-Style Cintiq tablet, allowing you to draw in Adobe Photoshop on the iPad. At $117AUD per year, it’s not the cheapest app but in terms of the time it saves me it’s worth it.
Best place to shop for gear?
Jetpens for pens and inks. They have almost anything pen-related you can imagine, including great reviews and handy guides.
Most visited websites?
Dropbox, because good backups are life. About a year ago I decided to sync all my working files and folders with Dropbox. It took a couple of weeks to finish uploading but it’s been the best thing I ever did – it syncs everything across multiple locations and keeps previous versions of all files, too. I can generate a link to any file at any time from any device. I also have an external HDD backup just in case.
Xero has changed my life. Having an easy and intuitive accounting system has freed me up to focus on the fun stuff. If I wasn’t using something like Xero, I’d be mentioning Microsoft Excel instead and not in a positive way.
Reddit – fun to browse, but the worst when you have deadlines.
Ozbargain Forums, where people find and share bargains basically – pricing errors, specials, voucher codes etc. and they get voted up/down depending on whether it’s a good deal. It’s really handy to check when you’re shopping around for something. And when you are procrastinating…
Inspiring reference books?
The Personal MBA by Josh Kaufman is hands down the best book I have read about running any kind of practice. It’s very agnostic in terms of what ‘business’ means to the reader, so you bring your own agenda to it and come away with loads of good stuff.
What do you listen to when you work?
Spotify is always on. Otherwise I’m listening to podcasts. I enjoy streaming WNYC, Radio Melbourne, The Economist, or Design Matters with Debbie Millman.
What’s something you wish you’d known before you learnt it the hard way?
Your environment shapes your behaviour in mysterious yet significant ways. Having known the 9-5 grind before starting out as an illustrator, I thought working from home would be the Shang-ri-la of working lifestyles… Hell no!
Even though I had a separate room set up as my work space, I would find myself keeping extremely odd hours, seemingly always in PJ’s, not leaving the house for days, and always feeling guilty that I wasn’t doing enough work.
Now I have a hired a studio space, so I’m required to get up, get dressed and leave the house. It means I get physical activity, social interaction and a dedicated space for work. When I leave that space, it’s play time!
I think this delineation is very important for people who do something for work that they also find fun or pleasurable. The conventional boundaries are blurred, so you need to work out where the line is. Inevitably, it will be different for each person and situation.
Catch Jeff on Instagram, and check out his personal and professional illustration work via his website.
