Since season 3 of The Witcher Netflix comes out tomorrow...here are some of my concerns on adaptation from this season onward. Potential spoilers for the future seasons and definite spoilers for the books. Long post ahead.
The Hansa's Dynamic
I am so worried about how the Hansa is going to be handled in the show. Like shaking in my boots terrified. The showrunners already really messed up Dandelion & Geralt's dynamic...and that's one of the easier dynamics present in the Hansa imo. The dynamic is already going to be screwy because Cahir is a middle aged man and not a petulant teenager if he's present in the Hansa at all (though I think he will be since Emhyr called him and Fringilla out at the end of s2).
Emhyr as a Character
Speaking of Emhyr...I think they might attempt to give him a redemption arc, and I cannot emphasize how bad of an idea that is. They're going to retcon the whole "wanting to impregnate Ciri" bit, which I have mixed feelings on. Like yes, on one hand that's fucking gross but on the other hand, that bit is in there to show how fucked up Emhyr is and why Geralt needs to get to Ciri so quickly; it adds a sense of urgency to the Hansa's travels. If I see Emhyr sympathizers on my dash after this season I will lose my fucking mind.
Milva's Pregnancy & Related Scenes
I suspect that Milva's pregnancy is going to be cut entirely or play up the rest of the Hansa's concern for her as a weird "men think they can control women's bodies" thing which Milva will have to fight with them about so the show can be appropriately pro-choice without exploring any of the pro-choice nuance the books bring up. I can just see Regis talking to the guys about it being turned into a "the father deserves a say in a woman's choice to abort" scenario instead of the "I will give this woman her abortion regardless of what you all think about that (and I've made that VERY clear) but I think she's making this choice because she believes you all will abandon her/not support her if she wants to keep this baby and someone needs to make sure that she knows that won't happen" scenario that it actually is. This is also plays into my concerns about the Hansa's dynamic as changing that scene changes it irreparably.
Characterizing Nilfgaard as a Nation
Right now I feel like the show could go one of two ways 1) Nilfgaard is wrong in everything it does or 2) Nilfgaard is right in everything it does (if Emhyr gets a redemption arc). The show has already made a show of the Northern Realms' racism, which is book accurate mind you, but I fear this will translate to a sort of "Nilfgaard is the better nation as its less racist" scenario. While Nilfgaard is better in that aspect and a few others, it is still a militant slave nation. Nilfgaard and the Northern Realms both have their evils and their virtues; that's a big point in the books and the games. Neither nation is 100% good or 100% bad - they're just nations. I don't think the show will be able to handle that kind of nuance.
Jaskier & Radovid...
Apparently, Radovid is supposed to be one of Jask's love interests this season. Radovid is a massive racist, a war criminal, and a teenager. I'm sure all of that's going to be retconned but for fuck's sake just make a new character if you're going to age up and completely change the personality and insanity of an existing one. Important note: I am 1000% in support of queer Jask. I have never shipped that man with a woman in my life (even in the books and games) but for the love of God why did his LI have to be fucking RADOVID??
Mistle & the Rats
If they make Ciri and Mistle a love story, I am going to be disappointed but not surprised. Let me be clear: Mistle is a rapist and an abuser. I suspect they will change that to shoehorn in a queer relationship (even though Triss and Philippa are RIGHT THERE if they want a semi-canon wlw couple). The Rats as a whole are definitely going to be made into more robinhood-like characters because God forbid a main character like Ciri is morally grey or does questionable/bad things.
Geralt's Disability
If this season ends with the Vilgefortz and Geralt fight, as I suspect it might, Geralt will be disabled permanently by the end of this season. The dryads do not fix it. Magic does not fix it. Geralt becomes disabled and stays disabled. His disability becomes a hindrance during the books and the reader actively sees him grapple with the fallout of this. I do not trust this show to handle that - especially with how much more closed off Geralt is in the show compared to the books. If I had to guess, Geralt's disability will be handwaved away or mentioned in passing and never actually shown to impact him which is not cool.

Jaskier/Dandelion Propaganda:
you know the answer
He sings, he's overly dramatic and he's fruity af
literally a bard and 💅
Jaskier says he was made to make music, to put himself in others' shoes to write epic tales of what it feels to live and love. He is an extravagant diva with fabulous dress sense, a sunshine personality and plenty of wit. His love of the witcher, Geralt of Rivia, and his "lovely bottom" is enough to make Jaskier go down in history.
Everything about him, his songs, his voice, his jokes, his rings and necklaces, clothes, his mere presence!!!!!
he travels around and plays the lute and fucks everyone that looks at him and wears outrageous outfits
canonically bi! <3
More propaganda!

On the topic of book scenes that were changed, one of them that interests me is the scene where it seems Geralt and Yen have died in The Last Wish. In the book, the mayor of the town starts to go on about how it’s so sad that Geralt died but don’t worry they’ll build him a statue. This greatly angers Dandelion and he yells at the mayor. In the show, Jaskier is the one who’s like “This is so sad, but don’t worry I’ll write the greatest ballad for Geralt!”. The complete change of the personality of the same character is what interests me. I love reading your analysis, so I was wondering if you have any thoughts on this. I know the change was probably for comedy purposes and that this is pretty insignificant, but to me, Dandelion’s reaction in the book just really screamed such a deep love for Geralt so I found the change a bit disappointing.
The Last Wish vs Bottle Appetites - Dandelion's reaction to Geralt's 'death'
Hi Nonny! Thanks for the ask. You sent this to me so very long ago, you may have completely moved on. BUT I figure if you aren't still interested, someone who follows me might be, so here I go:
Your ask is about a compare/contrast the book vs TWN scene where Geralt is presumed dead, and we’re comparing how Jaskier(Dandelion) react to his possible death, and how much emotional weight the scene is given.
I'll start by summarizing, but just a note: Dandelion does something in the books that I don't know how to interpret and maybe you (or anyone reading) can give their thoughts.
Ok, we’ll start with the show.
Bottled Appetites
In the show, the mayor and town dignitaries are not in the scene where Jaskier thinks Geralt is dead. It is just him and Chireadan looking at the building. Things are quiet, and Jaskier assumes they are dead.
"Are you sure they were up there? This can't be happening. This can't be happening."
I gotta say, Joey Batey, sells the emotion here. He has the most expressive eyes. He could do just about anything with any material, I think.
"Why did Geralt go in there, it doesn't make any sense...to save a mad fucking witch, why?"
It cuts away to Geralt and Yen. When it comes back to Jaskier, he is on his knees, assuming they are dead. Here is what he says:
"What am I supposed to do now, hm? It wasn't supposed to go this way. I'm going to write you the best song, so that everyone remembers who you were, what we did, everything we saw. And I will sing it, for the rest of my days. "
That is what you means as far as it seeming like he's giving up rather quickly. As he speaks, most of the camera work is on Chireadan, who goes to actually look whether they are dead. Chireadan stands in front of the window. At the end of his speaking part, the camera is back on Jaskier for the punchline.
"He always said I had the most wonderful singing voice."
And that’s the jokey joke. It references the b plot of Geralt feeling bad that he called Jaskier’s voice a ‘pie with no filling’. When Jaskier is hurt, Geralt says that he doesn’t want that to be the last thing Jaskier remembers.
Clearly, that would not be the last thing Jaskier remembers, because he will just change it to suit himself. It's a little of the ol’ Dandelion impenetrable ego performance.
And that is the 'piercing' of the dramatic moment you referenced.
But then Chireadan comes back.
"They're alive."
And Jaskier is like...
"Bollocks."
They go look in the window together, and see them having sex. Chireadan pulls Jaskier away.
The Last Wish
In the books, it's quite a different set up.
Dandelion is with the Mayor (Neville) and Priest of Rinde (Krepp), while Geralt fights with Yen in the building.
The reason for this reflects what I think is the biggest difference between the two stories-Yen.
Much like in the show, Yen did send Geralt to beat up the townspeople who are against her. (the tone is quite different, and the show doesn’t show it, but the basics are the same)
However, Yen does not want Geralt to get into legal trouble on her account, so she sends Dandelion back through a portal, and asks him to use his last wish to help Geralt.
Dandelion drops back through the portal.
“Innocent!” yelled the poet in a clear melodious tenor, sitting on the floor and looking around, his eyes vague. “Innocent! The witcher is innocent! I wish you to believe it!”
So now Dandelion is with the mayor and the priest, and Geralt goes to help Yen against Dandelion’s advice. Like in the show, Dandelion advises against it.
“Geralt,” said Dandelion, ‘you’ve gone stark raving mad! Keep away from that bloody strangler!”
And look, he has a point. He’s basically like, she is choosing this. She wants to do this. She used us both against our will. She is powerful and terrifying (the subtext being, why would she need you. If she’s dead set on this shit, then let her do it)
But of course Geralt goes. He is already falling for Yen. I think in the books it’s more clear as to why. But that’s sort of beside the point of this post. (At some point I want to do a compare/contrast Yenralt.)
But anywho. In the books, Dandelion is with the mayor, the priest, and Chireadan and they are watching the building from a safe distance.
Dandelion is distraught.
“What’s happening there!” Dandelion, clinging to the wall, strained his neck, trying to see in the downpour. “Tell me what is happening there, damnit!”
Then as the house begins to fall,
“Why did Geralt have to go in there?” groaned Dandelion. What the hell for? Why did he insist on saving that witch? Why? Chireadan, do you understand?”
Of course, Chireadan is in love with Yen, so he understand perfectly.
Then, Dandelion is terrified Geralt will die. He is upset, he is wailing.
“Are they both going to die?” wailed Dandelion. “How come, Krepp why? After all, the witcher--Why by all perfidious and unexpected plagues, isn’t he escaping? Why? What’s keeping him? Why doesn’t he leave the bloody witch to her fate and run away? It’s senseless...It’s suicide. And plain idiocy!”
The mayor is not so distraught.
“It’s his job, after all,” interrupted Neville. “The witcher is saving my town...if he chases the demon away, I’ll reward him handsomely...”
Then Dandelion cuts him off.
Dandelion snatched the hat decorated with the heron feather from his head, spat into it, threw it in the mud and trampled it, spitting out words in various languages as he did.
Now, I believe that spitting in one’s hat is considered something for good luck, and in some cultures is meant to ward off evil spirits. Dandelion looks down on superstition as is quite explicitly atheist, yet he resorts to it the minute he’s desperate on Geralt’s behalf.
(If I am reading that correctly. It could also be an expression of antipathy for Neville for all I know. Maybe someone else can comment, I'm just guessing)
And then Dandelion realizes something. They explained to him that Geralt actually has the wishes, but then it dawns on him that Geralt could use it to save himself.
“But he’s...” he groaned suddenly, “still got one wish in reserve. He could save both her, and himself! Mr. Krepp!”
The priest explains how difficult that would be. Then the house ‘explodes’ and the djinn escapes. The mayor and the owner of the house rejoice. The owner of the house has previously said that he has good insurance, so he says ‘what a wonderful ruin’. Dandelion is not so happy. In fact he is distraught, understandably. He sees that the house has fallen and he is afraid they are dead.
“Dammit, dammit!” hollered Dandelion...”it’s shattered the entire house! Nobody could survive that! Nobody I tell you!”
The mayor jumps straight to the same conclusion, but it significantly happier about it.
The witcher, Geralt of Rivia, has sacrificed himself for the town,” mayor Nevills said ceremoniously. “We won’t forget him. We’ll revere him. We’ll think of a statue...”
Dandelion does not react well to this. This is the part you were referencing.
Dandelion shook a piece of wicker matting bound with clay from his shoulder, brushed his jerkin free of lumps of rain-dampened plaster, looked at the mayor and, in a few well-chosen words, expressed his opinion about sacrifice, reverence, memory, and all the statues in the world.
I kind of wish the book had spelled out exactly what he said because I think it would have been amazing. But Dandelion tears him a new asshole and tells him where he can put the statue. We just don't get to hear the exact words.
Then it grows quiet. Dandelion is still afraid they are dead, but decides to go look to make sure.
By all the gods,” muttered Dandelion, “what silence...they’re dead I tell you. Either they’ve killed each other, or my djinn’s finished them off.”
Notice he still calls it 'my djinn', I think because he found it. He clearly is ready to blame himself. But then they go take a look at the ruins. They start to hear noises.
“Yennefer’s alive,” said Dandelion suddenly, straining his musical ear. “I heard her moan. There, she moaned again.”
And like in the show, Chireadan looks through a broken window, seeing Geralt and Yen having sex.
“Let’s get out of here,” he said quietly. “Let’s not disturb them.”
Chireadan is heartbroken, because he loves Yen.
Of course Dandelion is curious and doesn’t want to be put off (as always).
“What are they doing,” Dandelion was curious. “Tell me damnit!” The elf smiled very, very sadly. “I don’t like grand words,” he said. “And it is impossible to give it a name without using grand words.”
I think because of the involvement of the mayor, showing the way they see the witcher (useful, but highly expendable) next to Dandelion (that’s my friend, motherfucker) is interesting. I like that Dandelion tears him a new one.
The moment is definitely moved past much more quickly in the show, though to be fair they have a lot less time.
But what does everyone else think? If you’ve got this far, please share your thoughts! Which version of the story do you prefer? And what was the hat spitting all about?

Jaskier, the character's name in the original, Polish version means Buttercup. Editors changed it into Dandelion in English versions because they thought it was too girly. Marigold (the name under the pic) is Jaskier's name in the Czech edition.

First of all, I don't get what so great about jaskier either, there are far better and more fascinating characters, especially in games and books, and lots of them. So my question is: is this only in the show bc I'm not sure if dandelion is popular among the book fans or the gamers. I think characters like Regis, Eskel, Lambert are far more popular and of course Yen and Triss and Ciri are again way more popular and the lodge too.
ooh interesting question!
if you look at ao3 before december 20th, 2019 (air date of s1) there were 586 fics with the witcher book tag, and 1,480 fics with the witcher video games tag.
for comparison, the witcher tv show tag has a whopping 22,144 fics, to this day.
it should also be noted that tw3 was what made the witcher gain popularity worldwide. if you check ao3 stats before the third game, there were only 11 works (and only 3 of those are in english).
the most popular pairings: book - games
Tumblr media Tumblr media
even if you check jaskier's character tag you see there are fics, but not a lot (his character tag has been used 73 times vs geralt's 377 in the books tag)
the fan wars let's be honest, at that point, were yen vs triss (because of the games)
then you compare it to the most written pairings now:
Tumblr media
see how he's involved in practically every pairing? (with of course the very stark difference between geralt/jaskier and yen/geralt, that's more than 18k of fics!!!!)
Tumblr media
he's the second most written about character, after geralt!!! (notice how ciri - the actual main character of the books - is only 6th)
so i would say, yes. the popularity of jaskier is entirely to blame on the netflix show ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

WIP game and sending motivation! 💫 9. What is your favorite dialogue you’ve written so far? 14. What have you been finding frustrating with writing this chapter/fic? | optional because it takes so much time: 20. Share 3 images that would fit to a mood board for this chapter/fic.
!!! Omg what a perfect time for me to talk about this Dijkstra and Jaskier scene in my WIP which is currently titled "funeral shenanigans." This is a story about how Oxenfurt university and town come together to mourn/celebrate the death of the Vice Chancellor.
9. What is your favorite dialogue you’ve written so far? This was the moment he was waiting for. Jaskier handed over the oddly-shaped pouch to Dijkstra. “What’s this?” Dijkstra asked coolly, still unimpressed with Jaskier, but Jaskier wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass him by when he could have a little bit of fun. Jaskier held back his grin and shrugged. “Oh, you know, just something I picked up for you to commemorate today. Go on,” Jaskier urged, pantomiming opening up the pouch. Dijkstra loosened the pouch strings and looked inside. It was a ceramic sculpture featuring the Vice Chancellor bent over a chair, university robes flung up over his hips, hands on his asscheeks and holding himself open. Dijkstra’s lips pursed in thought, and when he glanced at Jaskier, he raised an eyebrow. “The artistic detail is very good, despite being inaccurate,” Dijkstra said, turning the sculpture around for a close examination. “You mean our dearly departed Vice Chancellor didn’t have an asshole large enough to accommodate 8 quills and 2 pencils?” Jaskier asked and mock-gasped.
14. What have you been finding frustrating with writing this chapter/fic? Oh, what’s been frustrating is that I keep getting carried away with the details of a scenario/the setting and I’m going to end up with another 15k story. I have such a hard time narrowing down what goes into a story, and I think this one really should be the 4-8k range but I don't know. I'm so fucking indecisive right now, augh. This WIP starts off with a private university assembly and Jaskier babysitting his students and another professor's students. Everyone is bored and tired and it’s such a long assembly and I have some amazing Jaskier moments in here. Then there’s more of a public funeral/parade for the town, so everyone has an excuse to drink and party, per life at Oxenfurt and that’s where Jaskier meets ups with Dijkstra and Linus Pitt. What’s holding me up is whether or not I want to have the parade turn into a riot to emphasize the growing tensions in Oxenfurt between the university and the residents (town vs gown and all). Or if I should just keep my focus narrowed to how Jaskier is interacting with Dijkstra and when Linus Pitt is calling Jaskier out for spending so much time on the road for the last decade instead of spending more time teaching the next generation of students. I have this whole scene where Jaskier talks with the artist who made the Asshole Quill Holder. It's a scene in which I’m very sweet on because I like seeing how Jaskier interacts with the Oxenfurt community. But yeah, I’m still indecisive about how much mayhem I want to put him through with the parade or parade-turned-riot.
20. Share 3 images that would fit to a mood board for this chapter/fic.
Oh, I don't actually have a specific inspo folder/moodboard for this fic but honestly anytime @kashuan 's Dijkstra art comes up on my dashboard I go fucking wild. Seriously!! Check out all the amazing Dijkstra art!! I love the way kashuan captures Dijkstra's expressions, especially when Dandelion's also in the panel, ahaha.
send me an ask for the current wip meme!

so I just finished the last wish today and wow the difference in the handling of Dol Blathanna in the books vs the netflix show is so shit because in the books Dandelion (Jaskier) specifically leaves the elves out of the ballad vs Jaskier in the show writes them into his ballad and lies about the whole encounter and frames the elves as villains

Book Geralt vs. TWN Geralt
Okay, I always see this discourse about book Geralt being so much happier, kinder to Dandelion/Jaskier, and full of sunshine and rainbows somehow.
I am almost done with Baptism of Fire, and this just... doesn't seem to be the case? I mean, I will say that book Geralt talks more, and he expresses himself more eloquently. But he is super depressed and taciturn, and he yells at Dandelion to shut up like every few pages...?
So where is this discourse coming from? Or am I misinterpreting these things?

like i think he would be incredibly kind, shyer than anyone would expect from either jaskier or geralt, with an incredibly sharp wit and a veritable library of information to draw from, the ability to talk circles around anyone but with more restraint than jaskier's ever been capable of, easily able to drink anyone under the table, and i also think he'd be a huge fucking bitch sometimes in a way that bordered on the cruel. especially when he's still learning himself, and learning how to balance two different styles of thinking in one body.
also like geralt's inherent self loathing vs dandelions self assuredness that he is the absolute most amazing person that's ever lived FIGHT

✨Round 4: Match 6✨
Tumblr media
Tom Bombadil Propaganda:
he literally just sings a little song and resists the power of all evil <3

We know Jaskier is from Lettenhove, but do they ever say where Lettenhove is located? Like what kingdom it's in? I'm wondering how much of a trek it is from there to Oxenfurt
Thanks!
Hi Nonny,
They never say where Lettenhove is. It is possible that it is not a place, but a family name. There was a post here by a Polish fan that I cannot find at the moment who said that this is possible. I am totally ignorant about naming conventions from medieval eras in different cultures so I can’t speak more to that. (But if anyone can find that post pls drop the link and I’ll rb.)
But Lettenhove isn’t specifically stated as a name vs a location in canon. And it is never placed. So, if you wanted to play with the concept of Lettenhove as a kingdom, it would be in the North, because we know for sure Jaskier is a nordling.
But we don’t know anything more specific. There are two dominant fan theories. They are as follows:
1) Lettenhove is in Redania. Jaskier spies for Redania and he claims explicitly that it is out of patriotic duty. Here he is infuriating Djikstra, his employer:
"I am not one of your subordinates." The poet puffed up with pride. "And I don't have to comply with instructions and orders. I help you sometimes but I do so out of my own free will, from patriotic duty, so as not to stand by idly in the face of approaching changes--"
(Blood of Elves, pp199)
So whether that is an accurate representation of his motivations, it does place the kingdom or city of Lettenhove in Redania, which is a whole ass realm containing several cities like Tretogor, Oxenfurt, and Novigrad.
Now, of course Dijkstra dismisses this, saying Dandelion will "spy for anyone who pays you." But that doesn't change the fact (whether you believe Dijkstra or not) that Dandelion claims Redania as a patriotic duty. (I wrote more about Dandelion and Djikstra here)
That is as specific as Dandelion ever gets, so it makes sense to place it there.
2) Lettenhove is in Kerack. Jaskier (Dandelion’s) cousin Ferrant de Lettenhove is a royal instigator in Kerack, a northern kingdom on the coast, just south of Redania and Temería.
That of course implies his family has status in that kingdom and is trusted with an official appointment. Also, when Geralt is arrested there, Ferrant says he will be treated fairly because—
“Julian—I mean Lord Dandelion-vouches for you.” (Season of Storms, pg 59 in e-book)
So, given that his family has status and a government position there, some people place Lettenhove in Kerack, and his comment about Redania and patriotism they see as a broader sense of loyalty to the North. After all, Dandelion does say that he is trying to stand against "approaching changes" by which he means Nilfgaard and imperialism, which affects the entire north. So, you can do what you will with that.
Of course, as we know, we can do anything we want in fic. But those are the canon tidbits if you want to build on them.
