jane eyre 2006 fans: in ep 3 toward the beginning, what is your interpretation of the scene with rochester and blanche ingram where she talks about renovating the furniture and he intently asks her "what do you rly want, blanche?"
having rewatched the series more than once, it feels more and more awkward/out of place as an addition - like there were probably deleted scenes or something that got cut out. it just doesnt seem purposeful at all. because before that, we see rochester admitting to having the fortune teller upset blanche - and after that, we see him part ways with the ingrams, giving her mother a death stare. so what did blanche tell him!!!! because i highly doubt she confessed to being a gold digger, and upon further analysis, she just seems annoyed in most of their scenes together and doesn't even seem to be into him at all. it's her mother doing everything.
and upon further consideration i honestly get the vibe that maybe she told him she didnt want to get married at all lol and that may be why rochesters attitude seems more directed at the obnoxious mrs ingram. anyway, blanche's prolonged silence and coyness in that scene is increasingly perplexing to me although i thought nothing of it upon first watch. maybe I'm just overthinking. idk what the director was going for there.
i also notice that aside from two or three snide comments, she really is a normal lady with a horrible mother lol - when everyone freaks out over mason's screaming, she takes initiative in asking what the hell is going on. she's the best female rider in the county supposedly. she shows courage at the ouija game. i don't really buy that 2006 blanche was really that devious or in love with rochester, but just a lady being practical & trying to please her mom. anyway!

I think I'm going to reorganize my books again. I am going to log them. My Dad started logging all his books recently. He has a library (more than a thousand books).
I don't because I tend to go through my books often and sell them if I think I didn't read them after them sitting on my shelf for a while or won't reread them.
I'm not sure how many books I currently have but it's more than a hundred (I have 3 shelves of various sizes mostly full of books). I buy books used most often. I recently sold some of my old books off to the local dealer about a week ago.

the way that in episodes 5 6 and 7 of amc’s interview with the vampire the relationship between louis lestat and claudia is specifically framed and stated like in like a million creative ways maker murderer lover could the children kill the father i put you on this earth I am your maker we’re his slaves it’s an honor just to sleep in masters house and in a gifset of lestat saying “clean up the mess” to his Black family he is literally at this point holding hostage. and actually in fact episodes 1 2 3 4 and the books the show is based on also support and build up to all of this. and the dozens of people on this stupid website were like that’s so girl mom of him and if you said otherwise you got called a gender essentialist bc girls can be evil too or something and then constantly there are posts like "all things can be true at once 🥺🥺🥺 sure louis gets compared to women textually and subtextually five times an episode and lestat is a wifebeater and is also abusive to his mistress and yes he has a mistress but lestat has long hair. sure lestat hunts claudia down in a scene that contains direct reference to slavecatchers of not even a century earlier but he has trauma and she beats him at chess #equality" like imagine constructing a whole argument about how jane eyre and mr rochester are essentially interchangeable in terms of instutituional power "Tony soprano had a bad childhood soooo" its literally nonsensical. can we have some fucking rigor and just common sense about a well written and deliberately constructed piece of media

A Long, Lonely Time (David Webster x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, but when Webster returns to Easy Company, you find it difficult to reckon with the very real possibility of losing him again, maybe even for good.
Note: Gender neutral reader, and no descriptors are used. The draft script of episode 3 provides more background on Webster transferring into Easy Company, which isn’t explained in the show for some reason (a shame because they cut out some pretty great scenes), but I included a handful of the details here. This is based on the fictional portrayals in the HBO miniseries and not the real individuals. Do not interact if you’re under 18, terf or radfem, or post thinspo/ED content.
Word count: 2.5k
Warnings: Hurt/angst with comfort. Mentions of Eugene Jackson’s death. Playing with the timeline of episode 8 a little bit. Probably some other historical inaccuracies. Do not interact if you’re under 18.
Tumblr media
Two days. David Webster had only been back for two days, and you kissed him.
Your crush on him had hibernated in his absence, frozen in a forest with the rest of you. It thawed as soon as you saw him for the first time in months.
The other members of Easy weren’t so quick to warm up to him again. No matter, it just gave you more time to spend with him. You appreciated how from the moment the two of you first bonded over your shared love of literature, he was genuinely interested in your thoughts and opinions, assuaging your fears that you’d be a lackluster companion to the Ivy Leaguer.
He could’ve taken the easy route as others with a privileged background like his had done and allowed his social status to get himself a cushy position. However, he, like Caption Nixon, inexplicably chose the rest of you. Unlike Nixon and yet just as inexplicable, he rejected any promotions. Odd, yet admirable, like when he’d approached Winters in Aldbourne after D-Day, requesting to transfer from Fox to Easy to put his skills as an assistant machine gunner to better use.
None of that mattered to your comrades anymore, but as a medic, you appreciated that he took recovering from being wounded seriously. You told him such, and he smiled, confessing that he had used his stint in the hospital for one selfish indulgence. Later, when the two of you were alone; he pulled a brown paper package from his pack, privately presenting you with a gift he got his hands on for you. Ripping back the wrapping, you beamed when you saw the cover of a brand new ASE copy of The Postman Always Rings Twice.
Your worn copy of Jane Eyre had been waterlogged from the snow and rendered illegible. New books were low priority in the Bois Jacques, so you were left without reading material for longer than you would’ve liked.
The book was the first time in what felt like years you’d received a gift. You had almost forgotten how nice it was, especially something so thoughtful. So you kissed him, impulsively, passionately, threading your fingers through his hair to pull him closer, your other hand gripping the book tightly.
He kissed you back with a tenderness that had long since become foreign to you and felt almost too overwhelming as a result. His lips were soft and warm compared to yours, chapped from weeks of unrelenting cold, but he was undeterred. His hands held your waist, his fingers gently pressing against the skin that’d been exposed as your untucked shirt had ridden up. You shuddered against him, feeling goosebumps rise on your skin–either the cold air, or his touch. Probably both.
Hearing the clamoring of nearby voices, you reluctantly broke the kiss.
“I don’t have anything to give you,” you lamented breathlessly.
His blue eyes seemed to sparkle when he smiled. “I think we’re even.”
“You know,” you began, turning the book over to glance at the synopsis, “all I ever heard when this came out was that it was dirty. Are you trying to tell me something?”
“Books aren’t dirty. It’s embarrassing that Boston even bans them the way they do.”
“Have you read it?”
“I haven’t, but that’s not the point. They’d ban Shakespeare if he were publishing today.”
“I don’t disagree with you,” you said, suppressing an amused smile, “but I only asked because I thought we could read it together, if you don’t mind the company.”
His expression softened. “I’d love that.”
Smiling, you leaned in for another kiss when the door opened, and the two of you jumped away from each other like the other was on fire.
You relaxed when you saw Roe standing in the doorway. He gave you an almost exasperated look, but that was all. For the moment.
“Webster,” Gene said, giving him a nod of acknowledgement before shifting his attention to you. “Will you sort through those supplies Luz got earlier? I gotta check on Lipton.”
“Sure,” you said with a nod. “Thanks again, Web–David, the book’s great.”
He smiled. “Of course.”
You followed Gene out of the room, walking side-by-side down the hallway until you were a decent distance from Webster and out of earshot from anyone who might otherwise eavesdrop. When your best friend stopped in his tracks, you mirrored him, flattering a bit beneath the weight of his disapproving glare.
“Are you crazy?” Gene scolded.
“He gave me a book. It’s not–don’t look at me like that.”
“However wounded he gets, it’s gonna be a lot worse for you.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t know. This ain’t the time or place.”
“There might not be another time or place,” you argued.
He sighed, either conceding to your argument or not finding it worth wasting any more breath over. For how long you’d known him, he could be impossibly difficult to read. “Just be careful, alright?”
Gene brought you to the recently delivered boxes of medical supplies, desperately needed weeks ago. Better late than never. You rifled through bandages and morphine, hands shaking a bit as you tried not to think about who might have still been there if it’d come in sooner. But Webster came back, even though you’d long been convinced you’d never see him again. At least if the worst happened, you wouldn’t have to wonder if your feelings for him were reciprocated.
The worst. You weren’t sure what, out of everything you’d seen the past few months, could have been considered the worst. Slow deaths, blown off limbs, or men whose bodies and psyche were trapped in that place between life and death. But you couldn’t let yourself spiral, not when so many people were relying on you. Hope seemed increasingly hard to find, and if indulging in whatever you had with David gave you the slightest bit more, you’d take it.
As if materializing from your thoughts of him, he walked into the room, silent concern etched in his face.
“There’s a patrol tonight,” he said. “We’re going across the river to bring back prisoners.”
“Who all’s going?” You figured if he was breaking the news to you, he’d be included. A sinking feeling dropped in your stomach when he answered, nevertheless.
“Most of 2nd platoon, except Liebgott and Malarkey.”
“It’s always 2nd platoon,” you muttered. “So you’re going as translator, then?”
He nodded. “The Krauts won’t expect us, at least that’s what they say.”
“I’m still gonna worry,” you said softly. “Just got you back.”
“Comes with the territory, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah, it does.”
“I’ll find you as soon as we’re done,” he promised.
“Can I give you a kiss for good luck?”
“I’ll never say no to that.”
You pressed your lips to his, craving the tenderness he’d given you earlier like it was missing from your veins. You hadn’t realized how much you needed it, soft words and tender touches that made you finally feel something other than numb and tired. Desire that would long remain unfulfilled had settled deep inside of you, and you desperately wished you and David were somewhere, anywhere else.
Holding onto him just as tightly as you were trying to keep your restraint, you went as far as he led you, open-mouthed kisses burning into your skin until a moan escaped your lips, nearly giving the two of you away.
“You’re the most incredible person I’ve ever met,” he said, giving you a quick kiss that felt achingly insufficient for what you wanted from him.
“Wait ‘til you get me in bed,” you joked.
He laughed, caressing your cheek. “I mean it. I’ve never known anyone like you.”
“Shame we had to meet this way, huh? But then we probably would’ve gone the rest of our lives not knowing each other at all.”
“That’d be a real tragedy.”
“You’re telling me.”
Far too soon for your liking, though you weren’t sure how much time had passed in all honesty, he made his leave as the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder and darkness began to fall.
You tried to keep your mind off of the patrol, assure yourself that you were worrying for nothing. Sitting on an empty couch, you finally got a better look at the book he presented you with, not having a chance to before. He’d written on the blank cover page, filled the whole thing and then some.
Beneath your name, carefully written in pencil, an inscription, detailing the longing he felt from your absence, his heart growing fonder of you with each passing day but struggling to assuage the loneliness and doubt that began to coil around it. The sound of your voice, your laughter, so vivid in his dreams that he’d wake up looking for you. He’d taken your friendship for granted, he claimed, but though the two of you met during less than ideal circumstances, getting shot was worth meeting you. Your vision began to blur with tears by the time you reached the end of his confession, ‘I missed you before we ever met, and now that we have, I miss you even more.’
You slammed the book shut, choking out a sob. It wasn’t fair. You’d just gotten him back, and in the blink of an eye you could lose him again, possibly for good. In that moment you understood better than ever why medics were supposed to keep their emotional distance, but the pain in your chest, the salty tears that stung your eyes were all worth it for the brief comfort you had found with him. You’d been so lonely otherwise, constantly surrounded by people but still feeling something missing until he returned.
Your name sounded muffled to the ringing in your ears, until Gene sat next to you, putting his arm around your shoulder.
“Don’t get too stuck in your head. Won’t be able to help no one like that,” Gene said, holding you in the hug. “Don’t think about it.”
“How can I not? It’s all around us–I can’t–”
“Yes, you can. You wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t.”
You let out a shaky breath. “I don’t feel like it sometimes. I feel like I’m just–”
“Just one person and it’s never gonna be enough.”
Something had happened in Bastogne, the last time he went back to the town. He never spoke of it, even when you offered to be an unjudging ear to spill his thoughts to, but you could tell it affected him deeply, even still. Knowing he was speaking from experience was an almost painful comfort.
“Why don’t you get some rest? I’ll be up,” he said.
“You sure?”
He nodded.
When he left, you set the book aside, silently promising yourself that you wouldn’t read it without Webster. If he didn’t return, it’d stay with you, unread until you met your own demise. An unnecessarily dramatic gesture to only yourself, you hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
The following hours found you in and out of sleep, almost unable to discern your erratic dreams with troubling reality. Footsteps and voices muddled together into unintelligible ramblings that you couldn’t help interpret as the worst in your near fugue state. Your worry was laced with frustration at letting the situation cause you so much distress. You were a medic, after all. You were supposed to be prepared for this.
Still, you couldn’t help but feel a momentary wave of relief crash over you when Webster walked into the room.
“Thank god,” you whispered, throwing your arms around him and kissing his cheek.
His embrace was stiff, awkward, and the far away expression on his face gave you pause.
“David, what happened?”
“Jackson’s dead. It was his own grenade. He didn’t wait long enough. It just…”
“Oh my god.”
“He didn’t die right away.”
“Why didn’t someone get me? Maybe I could’ve–”
“By the time Sergeant Martin got Doc Roe it was already too late. There was nothing Doc could do—nothing you could’ve done,” he said quietly, before adding, “I’m glad you didn’t see it.”
“I’ve seen worse by now.”
“Why add onto it?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Me too. That I didn’t write to you, that I didn’t tell you sooner how I felt about you, but it’s no use dwelling on all of that now,” he said. “It can’t change anything, and no matter how sorry we are, it won’t bring Jackson back, or anyone else, for that matter.”
It was settling in, that same bitterness that’d made its home in the bones of your comrades. A taste in your mouth that could be mistaken for blood by anyone else, but you knew it all too well. Your heart ached at seeing it finally get to Webster, too.
“Do you wanna just sit for a while?” you asked.
He nodded. The two of you settled onto the couch, his head in your lap as you ran your fingers through his hair, gently tracing the soft lines that ran across his forehead, betraying that despite his closed eyes, his mind was still racing.
“This isn’t exactly how I wanted to spend the rest of the night with you,” he mumbled after a while, his eyes fluttering open.
“David, it’s alright,” you said, your thumb brushing back and forth across his cheekbone, trying to pull his mind out of the depths you knew too well. “I’m glad just to do this. I’m kind of crazy about you.”
“Kind of?”
“Yeah, just a little bit.”
“What would I have to do to make you a fully-fledged lunatic?”
“Horrible, indecent things that would get me sent home in shame.”
He laughed. “But crazy about me?”
“Absolutely wild.”
He took your hand from his face, kissing your palm before holding it in his.
You weren’t sure when you’d fallen asleep, but you awoke the next morning with an unforgiving crick in your neck, and the thought of the recently delivered aspirin tempted you for a split second before you realized you’d woken up by yourself.
He probably slipped out at some point, returning to his bunk so neither of you would get into any trouble. It didn’t stop you from asking around for him until you finally caught him alone.
“Hey, where’d you run off to?” you asked.
“Sink wants another patrol,” Webster told you, watching cautiously as your hands balled into fists at your side.
You fought back tears of frustration. “Then I wanna go too. I’ll make sure nothing like what happened last night happens again. Where’s Captain Winters? I’ll–”
“Winters is going to tell him a phony story about how we went back but couldn’t get any more prisoners.”
You paused, your brain taking a moment to process the information before you let out a weak laugh in disbelief, the tears that’d welled up in your eyes rolling down your cheeks regardless. Maybe you were delirious. Or sleep deprived. And your neck still hurt. “That man is a fucking saint.”
Webster smiled, putting his arm around you and pressing a kiss to your temple. “He is. Especially since that leaves me free the rest of the night.”
“You know, this handsome guy just gave me a brand new copy of The Postman Always Rings Twice.”
“Sounds like he has good taste.”
You smiled. “Yeah, I’d say so.”

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8
11.49
You were pacing back and forth in your living room waiting for Joel. 11 more minutes and your birthday would be over. You would be disappointed if you didn’t spend your birthday with him. Birthdays were always a thing for you, especially this was your first birthday since you were dating Joel. But on the other side, you were also worried that something bad happened. Which might be the reason why he was late.
*knock on the door*
You ran to your door and opened it.
“Sorry, I’m late.” Joel was panting.
He looked really tired. You knew he came straight to your house right after patrol. He was full of sweat as he didn’t even have the time to take a shower.
“Thank God you’re here. I thought something bad happened to you.” You jumped to hug him.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry.” He hugged you tight. You kissed him.
“I-Ugh-I didn’t have the time to take a shower. I’m dirty.” He put his hand behind his neck.
“I don’t care. What matters is that you’re here with me.” You took his hand and dragged him inside.
“I got you somethin’.” He took off his backpack.
“You got me a present?” Your eyes widened. You loved getting presents.
“Happy birthday, darlin’.” Joel took out something from his bag and gave it to you.
“A book? How did you get it?” You wondered.
“Found it at an abandoned house during patrol. Haven’t seen that one on your bookshelf. Thought you might like it. Heard it was a famous one.”
“Jane Eyre?” You read the title and the summary behind the book.
“Interesting. I love it. Thank you so much, Joel.” You hugged him again and kissed him.
“You really need to stop hugging me now. I’m being self-conscious. I’m smelly.” He chuckled.
You didn’t care what he said. Instead, you moved closer to him and sniffed him like a puppy, teasing him.
“Stop it.” He laughed.
“Wish I could go out and find more books.” You started that conversation again.
“I’ll get you more when I go on patrol.” He sighed.
“But I-” Joel cut you.
“We’re not talking about this again. You know what my answer is. The answer is always no. End of conversation.” His expression changed from happy to angry.
You stayed quiet.
“Are we clear?” He raised his eyebrows.
“Yes.” You replied coldly.
“Repeat it.”
“Clear.” You rolled your eyes.
You didn’t listen to Joel this time. Instead, you found Liam who was responsible for making the patrolling schedules. You asked him about Joel’s and you applied to join. You told him not to tell Joel as you were keeping this as a secret from Joel. You practiced your shooting skills until it was the day of your first patrol.
“Why are you here?” Joel furrowed his brows.
“I’m here for patrol.” You acted dumb.
“What?” He raised his voice.
You avoided his eyes.
“Did you not remember what I told you? How did you even-”
“Well, it’s too late, Joel. I’m here now. I’ve prepared myself. I’ll be fine.” You insisted.
“Fine. Just stick with me. Understand?”
“Yes, sir.”
You and Joel rode the same horse. You put your arms around his waist and rested your head on his back. That day, you went on groups with Joel, Noah, and Sam. Noah was the leader for the day.
“Okay, so we’re gonna split here. I’ll go check north with Joel. Sam, you go south with (y/n). We’ll meet here in 4 hours then we’ll go east and west.” Noah commanded.
“I’m sorry, Noah. But (y/n) needs to go with me. I need to keep my eye on her.” Joel added.
“I’m not a kid, Joel. I’ll go with Sam. We’ll meet you here.” You gestured to Sam to ride the horse with you.
Nothing bad happened while you were patrolling with Sam. You wondered why Joel didn’t allow you to patrol. Was he lying to you? You wondered why he wouldn’t let you see the beautiful nature outside Jackson walls.
“Hi there!” Two men suddenly showed up.
Sam stopped the horse. You grabbed your gun and aimed at them.
“We’re not a threat.” The strangers said.
You and Sam got off the horse and talked to them. You tied the horse at the tree.
“Can we help you?” Sam asked.
“Yes, we’re hungry. We have a group with us and we need something to eat.”
“Well, we don’t have food with us now. But we can get you something.” Sam answered.
“Or we can help you hunt here?” You added as you saw they didn’t look like they had any weapons.
“Sure, thank you so much.”
Sam and you walked in front of them and turned into hunting mode. You had never hunted before so you just followed Sam.
*Sam screamed*
You turned to look and you saw the two men stabbed Sam from behind.
“Sam!” You looked at him as he fell to the ground. You grabbed your gun and aimed at the men.
“Back off!” You shouted.
“Easy, pretty girl. We’re not gonna kill you. We need your friend to fill our stomach. But you.. You’re pretty so you can give something else to us.” The stranger smirked.
“Go! Run! Get Joel and Noah!” Sam shouted.
You hesitated to leave him but you knew you couldn’t fight these two men alone. So you ran. Hoping Sam would still be alive when you got back there with help.
“Get her alive!” The stranger shouted at his friend.
Both of them ran behind you to catch you. You ran as fast as you could. Your friend’s life was on the line and so did yours. You ran and got to your horse.
“Come on! Go!” You yelled at the horse and it ran.
You ran north and you were losing them. It was a bit far until you saw Joel’s and Noah’s figure.
“Joel! Joel!” You shouted.
“Did you hear that?” Noah asked Joel.
“What?” Joel was deaf one ear so he didn’t hear you.
“Joel! Help!” Your horse kept running.
“That’s (y/n)!” Noah looked back.
“Fuck!” Joel panicked.
You finally got to them. You immediately got off the horse and ran to Joel’s embrace.
“What happened? Where’s Sam?” Noah panicked too.
“There’s-there’s some men- He’s hurt- We need to save him!” You screamed.
“Hey, hey. You okay? You hurt? Anythin’?” Joel checked you up and down.
You panted and shook your head. The three of you walked towards the south going back to save Sam.
“Oh my God. It’s them.” You saw the two men running near you.
“Stay behind me.” Joel shoved you behind him and got ready with his rifle. Noah did the same.
“My friend here told me you hurt our friend. Where is he?” Noah pointed his gun to the strangers.
“Easy, easy. We’re just here for the girl. Just give us the pretty girl and we’ll give you back your friend.” One of the strangers tried to bargain.
“Joel…” You pulled Joel’s shirt from the back.
He glanced at you for a second and looked back at the strangers.
“That’s not gonna happen.” He growled.
“What? Is she your daughter or something?” The other men scoffed.
“You better be careful of what you say next.” Joel’s blood boils. His grip on the rifle got tighter.
“All of us are men. I’m sure you know what we need. Especially that pretty girl right there has a fucking sexy body. She’s probably a slut that all of you have fucked. Why don’t you share with us?”
You were shaking. You were scared. You just understood why Joel insisted on you not going out for patrol. You should have listened to him in the first place.
“You want to do this the hard way or the easy way?” Joel’s patience was running out.
“What’s that?” The stranger got cocky.
“I’ll let you go if you apologize to her right now.” Joel gave them an option.
“Or what?” The stranger laughed.
“Or this will be a bloodbath.” Joel gave them a death stare.
“Just apologize, man.” Noah was nervous. He knew what Joel was capable of.
“All of this just for the slut?” The stranger laughed.
*gunshot*
Joel couldn’t hold himself. He shot him at the leg. Noah fought the other guy.
“Apologize!” He yelled at the guy and pressed the wound.
“You’re not gonna kill me.” He was still cocky.
Joel shot him again at the other leg.
“Fine! Fine! I’m sorry!” He cried.
“For what!” Joel yelled at his face.
“Sorry for calling you a slut!” He apologized while looking at you.
You flinched when Joel shot him at the head after he apologized. You were trembling and speechless.
“No!” The other guy cried.
Joel's breathing was heavy and he looked to the other guy that Noah was holding. He shot him dead.
“Joel! What the fuck!” Noah yelled.
“Let’s get Sam. Where is he?” Joel didn’t care he killed them. They were threats.
“He-he-he’s there.” You guided Joel and Noah to Sam.
“Sam!” You ran to him.
“You’re gonna be okay. We’re safe now.” You cradled him.
The four of you went back to Jackson and got Sam help. Then you and Joel went home.
*Joel slammed the door*
You flinched. You were avoiding having conversation with Joel since what happened on patrol.
“What the fuck were you thinkin’?!” Joel yelled at you.
Your hands started to shake. You had never seen him like this before.
“I told you it was dangerous! Why are you being so stubborn!”
“I-I’m sorry.” You stepped back from him. Tears welling in your eyes.
“You’re never going anywhere closer to the gate. Ever! You hear me!” He raised his voice.
You nodded as you wiped your tears from your cheeks.
Joel pinched the bridge of his nose, looked up, closed his eyes, and sighed. He took a deep breath in and out trying to calm himself down. Meanwhile, you were just standing there frozen. You were too scared to move.
“Baby, I-I’m sorry.” He apologized.
You just nodded and kept crying.
“Come here.” He stepped closer to hug you but you instinctively stepped back.
“Hey, hey, I’m sorry. I would never hurt you.” He slowly walked closer and hugged you.
“I just-I don’t want you to get hurt. I’ve lost the people I loved and I don’t want to lose one again. I swear on my life, I will never fall in love again. Not after losing Sarah, Sarah’s mom, Tess. Losing someone I love is the last thing I want to have in this fucked up world. But then I met you. You changed me. You make me believe that there’s still hope. Love. Happiness. I will protect you with my life no matter what happens. I love you more than my life. You should know that.” He stroked your head up and down.
You started sobbing and hyperventilating at his words.
“I love you, too.” You mumbled at his chest.
Joel cupped your cheeks and kissed your forehead. He looked at you through your eyes as his thumb wiped your tears from your cheeks.
“Are we cool now?” His voice was now softer.
You nodded and rested your head on his chest.
The night carried on with you and Joel having make-up sex in your bedroom.
Joel groaned as he fell on top of you catching his breath. He came inside you.
“Did you just cum inside me?” Your hands were resting on his back.
Joel froze for a second.
“You forgot to pull out.” You repeated.
“Shit.” He got up and sat facing you as you propped yourself with your elbow facing him.
“I’m sorry.” He apologized.
“I mean-You gotta have a lot of sex to get pregnant right?” You needed assurance from him.
Having a child and being a mother was always your dream. That was why you chose to teach kids. But this was not how you wanted to have kids. You didn’t want to have kids by mistake. You wanted to have kids when both partners agreed.
“Yeah, yeah. You’re right.” He assured you.
“I’m sorry.” Joel put his hand on his forehead and apologized again.
“It’s okay.”
“You have to tell me if something happens okay?”
“You mean if I get pregnant.” You smirked.
“Yeah, that’s what I meant.”
“Okay.”
To be continued…

More Jane Eyre analysis, this time concerning the Varens family backstory and my theories and opinions on the characters of Adèle and Rochester, as well as their depictions in the 1996 and 2006 adaptations--
In a post I made, I mentioned that Céline Varens (mother of Adèle Varens) was dead, and someone (@thoumpingground, thank you!) replied with how they thought Céline had just ran away with a musician and never actually been pronounced dead. This led me to wonder, because a lot of the criticism and essays I've read repeat the idea that Adèle is an orphan and/or that her mother died, and I myself could have sworn her mother died of consumption or typhus. But no! I went on the Internet Archive and re-read passages about Rochester and the Varens, did a deep reading, and came to other conclusions which totally changed my understanding of these characters. Below I try to untangle and assess this apparently common confusion.
Here are the details I've gathered: 1) Adèle tells Jane only that her mother died, 2) Rochester tells Jane only that Adèle's mother abandoned her. I originally believed that she died after the abandonment, but it seems more likely that 3) Rochester must have told Adèle that her mother died because it was easier than explaining the abandonment. 4) Neither Rochester nor Jane believe that Adèle is his biological child, and no biological father ever claimed her, making Adèle paternally as well as maternally abandoned. 5) After Rochester tells her the story of Adèle, Jane calls Adèle an orphan like herself, not because she believes Adèle's parents are dead, but because she's likening abandonment to orphaning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe that Rochester's probable lie to Adèle is fully in line with his character because the entire plot of the novel largely hinges on his repetitive deceptiveness. His love for toying with the truth, combined with his flair for the dramatic and his passionate feelings of betrayal at the hands of Céline, render it easy to believe that he would've seen Céline's abandonment and infidelity as her being metaphorically "dead" to him. As Rochester often conflates feelings and facts, and continuously blurs the lines between fiction and reality (every other line he's mentioning elves and mermaids), he wouldn't have seen him calling Céline dead as being a complete lie, and this is what makes it more believable to me.
Rochester usually believes his own lies to some extent or is able to justify them. His talent at deception a major attribute (and flaw) of his, as well as something we readers are constantly left to debate the morality of; this is made more complex by most of his lies being understandable or sympathizable, even if sometimes ridiculous. This is what makes him an appealing character.
He imitates a fortune teller on the basis of fortune telling being inherently deceptive anyway (as Jane states). He dons this disguise to break-up with Blanche while uncovering her true motives and protecting her feelings in the process, as well as to try to covertly assess the truth of Jane's feelings and to reveal his own.
He claims to be a bachelor and tries to get remarried because he felt like Bertha had already been metaphorically and spiritually divorced from him a long time ago, if not in actuality. He deceptively hides in Céline's room in order to ascertain what he already knows to be the truth and to convenienly confront her. Céline's larger deception allows him to feel that his own one is justifiable. He also deceives Jane when they first meet by failing to inform her of his identity, but he doesn't assume a false identity, either, complicating this lie as well.
He leads everyone (but most importantly, Jane) to believe he's planning to marry Blanche even after we can tell that he's really planning to marry Jane. This again is a sort of half-lie in his eyes, because he truly did plan on getting remarried to someone.
I also have a theory that Rochester really did plan on marrying Blanche before deciding to propose to Jane, considering that: 1) we're told by Mrs. Fairfax that Rochester and Blanche had flirted before Jane was in the picture; 2) Rochester says that Blanche resembles Bertha, who he said he married because he was attracted to her; 3) it wouldn't make sense that Rochester would go through so much trouble to lead Blanche on solely to make Jane jealous, especially not when we know he had set his sights on Blanche before he knew Jane and prizes constancy in affection above all else; 4) Blanche's character specifically matches that of all his other past lovers (in short, more beautiful on the outside than the inside) which supports the idea that his attraction to her and intention to marry her was actually genuine at first.
In short, all Rochester's lies are omissions or half-truths, always justifiable in his eyes because they're performed to protect himself, or others, or as a method of assessing the truth. He follows an odd set of rules regarding deception, and this is in line with the strong fae/folklore/trickster themes of the novel which many academics have noted. I don't believe he ever deceives carelessly, on a whim, or in order to be purely cruel.
Adèle informs Jane that her mother has gone to heaven, so evidently she has been told so by someone. I also believe his probable lie to Adèle is important because it is more proof that he truly does care about her beneath his reluctance to love her due to her similarity to her mother.
I can imagine Rochester sitting her on his knee and explaining this to her much like he later explains to her in the carrage of his and Jane's elvish, honey-"moon" adventure tale. Despite openly criticizing her and her mother, Rochester still doesn't want Adèle to have abandonment issues, to feel lonely, or to break her heart by ruining the good memories of her mother which she so clearly covets, as seen by her proud presentations of the song, poetry, and dance she says her mother taught her.
I don't know why adaptations haven't banked on these points, since Rochester's relationship with Adèle is one of his most redeeming qualities, even despite his occasional coldness to her. The 1996 version is great because out of all the adaptations I've seen or read about (not all of them because there are a million), it has the most emphasis on Adèle and her relationships.
1996 also keeps the line about her mother going to the Holy Virgin, and we get the impression that she was raised by her mother, whereas in the 2006 BBC adaptation for example, we're shown that Adèle was left to Rochester in her crib, yet Rochester still says Adèle inherited her mother's bad "French" attributes, which from his perspective must be genetic.
All the Rochester's question Adèle's nature v nurture attributes to some extent, but choosing to give Adèle no memories of her mother as the 2006 does kind of changes the Adèle/Céline discourse to being more genetic in basis. In other words, the 2006 focus is more on questioning nature rather than nurture, whereas other versions focus on both, or focus on nurture.
All the Rochester's speculations on Adèle's genetics keeps in line with 19-century anti-French British sentiment, and the increasing Victorian "nature vs nurture" discourse. For 2006 Rochester specifically, this all fits with his interest in biology & nature -- his specimen collection, him helping with Adèle's lessons, his scientist friend, the twin/twin flame theories; all 2006 inventions which clearly have a lot of historical and textual basis. However, in all the versions, it seems Adèle's vanity and "French defects" (as Jane dubs them in the book) whether genetically or socially imbued, exist to emphasize how nurture is just as important as nature.
Bertha Mason and John Reed exist as examples of ill nature overpowering weak nurturing, whereas Jane Eyre and Adèle Varens are examples of undecided nature strengthening in resolve after an upgrade of nurturing. For Jane this was through Bessie, Miss Temple, Helen Burns, and Mrs. Fairfax. For Adèle it was Mrs. Fairfax, Jane, and then Jane sending her to a good school which she says at the end of the book was responsible for turning Adèle into a great person.
But there is also an emphasis on the willpower of Jane and Adèle, as there is for Edward Rochester, who we learn from his account probably had poor nurturing, as he says his father and brother tricked him into marrying Bertha. As an aside: the 1996 version really emphasizes the implication that Rochester's dad and brother sucked, which I agree with, but I think it's also part of the problem of this film making Rochester a little too sympathetic (lol).
It makes sense that in the book Adèle had apparently been old enough to actually remember being socialized by her mother and therefore had been more capable of absorbing her mother's character. Perhaps 2006's approach is more intelligent, as it leaves the theory of nature v nurture more up for debate just like Adèle's parentage is (though Jane and Rochester are decided against his paternity, we have no way of ascertaining it).
I wish we had been able to see or hear more about Céline interacting with Adèle, as it would have explained how Adèle came to love the performing arts and to worship fashionable ladies. In the book, this is essentially her clinging to memories of her mother, which are later replaced by Jane's influence.
Adèle's status as an orphan (if not a literal one, a metaphorical one) is worthy of analysis because it also links her to the (literally) orphaned Jane and Rochester. Their mutual orphanage leads them to bond and form into a found family. Jane blatantly declares this kindredness to Rochester as highlighted above, and I believe Rochester must also feel this connection as shown by his devotion to Adèle, as he explains he took her on because she had no one else in the world (except Sophie maybe, but she couldn't support Adèle alone).

Hey I LOVE your Yugi twins analysis post!! ( not because I like the toxicity/ incest I just think it’s a great analysis of tbhk) and I wanted to ask your opinion on a thing
Toilet Bound Hanako Kun as a series is a Gothic Romance
Tumblr media
I’ve been going insane about because I’m a huge fan of the genre
( some examples: Crimson Peak ( movie), Jane Eyre, Dracula, Rebecca ( novel and movie), The Fall of The House of Usher, etc)
and I’m 100% convinced by now but I need validation
agree or disagree?
Oh! Thank you!! I'm happy to know you liked it :3
Yeah, I don't like incestuous relationships either, but if it's in the story we have to analyze it.
I don't know if this helps you, but here in my country, this anime is within this genre. Even if elsewhere it does not have this classification, the story itself leads to this path.
"How is the Gothic novel characterized? The Gothic novel is an essentially hybrid manifestation, a link between the novelistic and the novel in which an atmosphere of mystery, affliction and terror prevails."
There's a strange duality to the relationships in this series. If I were to ask you if you could name me any JSHK romantic relationships that are TOTALLY HEALTHY, could you name them for me?
Mitsuba x Kou It's not canonically romantic yet, but even before it is, Kou is aggressive and demanding of Mitsuba, not to mention that he puts Mitsuba's wants above his own. Mitsuba, on the other hand, demonstrated a desire for "death together", which Kou tried to do without hesitation. A guy tried to take his own life for someone else, and Mitsuba wanted to trap him in the PP arch along with him.
Aoi x Aoi Akane is extremely possessive, aggressive, jealous and intolerant. When I say intolerant I am referring to anyone who has a romantic interest in Aoi. He doesn't give her the power of choice, he simply decided that she is his. Traces of an EXTREMELY abusive and DANGEROUS relationship, yes, imminent risk of death. Many REAL LIFE cases start like this. Aoi is jealous of Akane's popularity (in terms of friendships), and doesn't think twice before impaling him.
Hanako x Nene It follows a fine line between Aoi x Aoi, the difference is that Hanako is not aggressive, BUT, he is vengeful. We constantly see him punishing Nene when she shows interest in other guys. He makes decisions about her life alone without consulting her and without allowing her to choose what is best for her or not. He is jealous, possessive, insecure and needy. Hanako would be able to kill Nene if he believed it was the best option for her. I don't need to mention the PP arc or the number six arc. Nene is a girl who tends towards disrespect, she flirts with other guys in front of Hanako, even though she is about to enter into a relationship with him.
This is just a SUPERFICIAL summary of the three main ships in the series. They all seem to want to culminate in tragedy, something that fits into the gothic genre.
Besides of course, the relationship between the twins, a mysterious and dark relationship, you can't follow this relationship without thinking that there is "something strange"
If we compare, for example, the relationship between Edward Elric and Alphonse, we see here a healthy and common relationship between brothers, with its ups and downs and with great brotherly love between them. Remembering that Edward's entire journey is dedicated to his younger brother. Ed made a mistake in the past and his younger brother suffered a serious consequence, Ed took responsibility and promised to solve the problem. They are together almost all the time and yet you clearly see that it is a healthy relationship.
Tumblr media
Not in the case of twins. There's a strange ambiguity in what they consider "love", it doesn't feel like sibling love, and it's not ordinary love, it's something more obsessive, more… how can I say… suffocating? There's something I still can't see. It's not just "maybe it's incest" it's something more than that. Maybe one day I will be able to organize my ideas and think more clearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yes, JSHK fits into this genre, it fits into many other things in this genre too, I only focused on relationships because you talked about the twins' relationship.

A List of my Favourite 'Gothic' Media
Last Updated: Nov 1st 2023
My preference to gothic aesthetic is mostly victorian goth. Hence, this is what the list will consist of with some outliers. This is not a list of every good gothic media out there, it’s just the ones I have consumed and truly make me feel like I’ve transported into that world.
This list is very selective and subjective. It doesn't always follow the textbook or culturally accepted meaning of 'goth'. It is mostly about the vibe, aesthetic, feelings and motifs that are associated with a beautiful, melancholic and mystical story.
Feel free to submit me ideas for the list, or add your own in reblogs/comments and I will keep updating this post as I consume more of said media =D
*The titles in italics are not exactly gothic but give the same melancholic, beautiful vibe that draws me to gothic media.

something fun and interesting for me as a fanfic author is being REALLY AWARE of how much of a debt of gratitude/inspiration i owe to the works i love, and being likewise aware of how much they shape the way my own mind forms its thoughts and frameworks.
i got a good response to this particular paragraph in the last update i posted to my current WIP (it’s a Tomarry fic if anyone is interested!):
“An unearthly sound rose to fill the corridor, echoing from the very beams of light surrounding them, a song as beautiful as it was haunting. It set all the fine hairs on Tom’s body to standing and pimpled his skin with gooseflesh. He had never heard anything of the like before, and found that he was utterly transfixed by it. It was almost awful in its sheer goodness, achingly lovely in a way that seemed to stab and tear at Tom. The longer that Tom listened, the more it felt as if he were bleeding inwardly, somewhere he hadn’t imagined it possible for him to sustain a wound and thus had never thought to protect. Tom wanted the song never to stop, to go on forever with him always cradled within it, even as a part of him raged and gnashed and feared, wanting to escape the terrifying, awe-inspiring beauty of it all.”
and i am so aware of exactly where i got the inspiration for all of the best lines!
1. the “awful in its loveliness” line from milton’s paradise lost
“Abashed the Devil stood, and felt how awful goodness is, and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely, saw, and pined His loss."
2. the “stab and tear” line from a letter franz kafka wrote to oskar pollak
“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for?”
3. the “bleeding inwardly” line from mr. rochester in charlotte brontë’s jane eyre
“I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I'm afraid that cord of communion would snap. And I have a notion that I'd take to bleeding inwardly.”
all of my best thoughts and ideas and lines are the byproducts of the ones i’ve read and loved before! and i don’t mind that! it feels wonderful being part of this endless, ancient human conversation
