My Lethal White episode 1 recap

After having had a lot of fun recapping episode 2, I went back and did episode 1 as well. It got a bit out of hand and is a loooong post...

Under the cut, because, evidently, there will be ALL THE SPOILERS! 🚨

*SQUEEEEE!!!* THEY’RE BACK!!! 🤗💃🏻🙌🏼 (Yes, I’m still squeeing, although this is a rewatch)

Let’s look at the title sequence, shall we? They’ve added a few new details: There’s the wooden cross from the dell, the White Horse of Uffington and Robin’s Houses of Parliament guest pass. The child from Billy’s memories and the pink blanket. Someone’s already mentioned the ‘whore’ swirling in the coffee cup, and then later we have a fencing icon in the pint. Cool hints. 😎

Cut to tired, head-achy Cormoran at the wedding. Strike has a slightly different haircut, and I wonder: they dye Tom’s hair darker for the role, but he has a glint of natural first grey at the temples that I’ve seen on Tom pre-Strike. How did they keep that? (Sorry about the hair kink digression…☺️)

Pet peeve of mine they carried over from Career of Evil: in the book, Donald Laing slashes Strike’s palm, but it didn’t happen in the series. There was no blood on his hand when he called Robin, and his glove was intact. And yet, Strike has his hand bandaged. I know it’s a silly pet peeve of mine, but stuff like that pulls me out of the moment. And Strike wouldn’t slap on a bandage just for a little bruising. *steps off soap box*

“You look beautiful.” - “And you look terrible.” - “It’s this jacket, needs taking in.” 😂

“I want you back.” - “What?” Augh, the double meaning of it all, Strike’s softness and Robin’s initial uncertainty of what he means. 🥺

When she realizes that Matt deleted Strike’s messages, there’s a tear spilling from her eye, and she quickly wipes it away. 😢 Such good acting. Such a brave girl.

A few of us have already addressed this in the chat: did Matt BLOCK Strike, or delete his calls and messages? Or both? They’re frustratingly unclear about this detail, and it makes a difference in terms of Strike being able to reach her or not. (I’m a continuity nerd, sorry)

Robin looks so beautiful! And so very sad. (Holliday is acting her heart out of this season, can’t say it enough). This is award material, hands-down. 🏆

Her look across the room at Cormoran while they’re eating! And he’s… just been staring at her all through the meal? Good god. These two.

If Cormoran falls asleep before dessert he’s got to be really, REALLY tired.☺️ Poor baby.

We’ve got to work on your fine dining skills, Cormoran darling! It’s very cowboy and rugged, handling cutlery like that, but you would SINK during an aristocracy under-cover op. Maybe the Comte de la Fère is available for a lesson?

The first chords of The Calling’s “Wherever you will go”. Ack. They really went for the original, and as someone who’s always been ridiculously in love with that cheesy song, I AM HERE FOR IT.

(and what a juxtaposition to the little lady with the funny hat bobbing happily next to him, to everyone looking awww and being completely ignorant of the drama that’s playing out. Ugh. I’m dead.)

Matthew moves like someone who’s (painstakingly) learned exactly one (1) dance, and for their wedding only, and why is he even smiling so proudly? They must’ve just had the biggest row in history? Is he really so full of himself?

Even Robin is smiling, although staring longingly at Strike. I bet they did that so Strike would be a little mad at her and want to walk away.

AND HE DOES! 😟 You can just see the “Fuck this” from the book crossing his face as he turns around and leaves. Ack. I’m dead again.

If I could then I would, I’ll go wherever you will go

(Perfectly placed, kudos) 👏🏼

And she runs after him, looking like a fairy-tale princess. Did you see how frigging COLD it must’ve been, judging by her breath?! Poor Holliday must have been freezing to death during the shoot. And then to pull off such a heartbreaking scene…

(Also, the lawn in the park? A shitload of rolled sods. No grass looks this lusciously green in winter, and you can see the edges everywhere. Some landscaper had a field day there!)

“Are you sure?” - “Yeah. I am.” About WHAT, you idiots?! *wrings hands* To her coming back to work, of course, but there’s so much more to their statements. And I’m sure that non-book-readers thought they were about to kiss and elope, but - alas! - we know that’s not going to happen.😔

But at least we get The Hug™️, and it’s everything we hoped for: Robin crying, digging her fingers into his jacket; Cormoran closing his eyes… God help us, we are all DOOMED sailing this ship! 🙈💔

I was a little miffed upon first watching that they faded out of that hug so quickly. That was it? No, it wasn’t, as we now know, and I love, love, love that we’re getting all these extended flashbacks that reveal more and more of what happened to us!

ONE BLOODY YEAR LATER (I still can’t get over that time jump)

Lol at the subcontractor crashing his moped into the cab! It was only briefly mentioned in the book, and turning it into an actual dialogue was a fun idea.😂

And there’s Denise (that IS her, right?), completely uninterested in doing her job. Good grief - Strike and Robin are BAD a picking employees! 🙈

Robin looking not-jealous-at-all at Strike walking off with Lorelei. Ouch.

I like Lorelei, btw. They chose the actress well, and she’s nice and mature. Which doesn’t mean that I’m not secretly flinching every time she kisses Cormoran. It’s just not right.

Billy. Joseph Quinn does an incredible job playing him. 👏🏼 As dangerous as he appears at first, his despair and his efforts at holding himself together are heartbreaking. That battle he wages against his mental illness is on full display, and his scared big eyes are killing me. 🥺

Cormoran is admirably unfazed by Billy’s appearance - is that his Army training kicking in? Robin, though, is shaking but braving it out, recording with her phone although her hands are trembling. Good acting by Holliday.

Good riddance, Denise.

The good ole’ pencil trick. “I didn’t know people still did this.” 😌

I was surprised that Cormoran chose to simply break into the house on Charlemont road. It’s breaking and entering for no good reason. Could’ve been anybody’s home.

He’s not going to- EWW! He’s sitting down on that filthy couch. And plucking hairs from it. EWW!🤢

Robin: “...and some porn.” 😂 Says it as if it’s what they always find. The usual. Men… 🙄

Who’s the guy taking pictures of Cormoran? I seriously don’t remember this from the b- Oh, WAIT! Reporter guy. Patterson. Yeah. Him.

The CORE members are as cliché in their looks as are Chiswell’s upper class folks. It’s all a bit on the nose for my taste, but then clichés are clichés for a reason.

Cormoran needs to work on his disguises. Not fitting in at all with the CORE crowd, age-wise or in his look. No wonder they don’t trust him. He does it better in the books.

Oh Robin. I actually think you need a lot more therapy to work through your shit.

Ah, here we go. Seaborn bacteria. But first, Matt’s got to be a prick again. 🙄

Chiswell with his arrogance and his rudeness and his finger-snapping. *shakes head* I think if Cormoran hadn’t known he could make some serious money with this case, he may have walked out on him.

Btw, the “large” jacket is making Strike look slimmer instead of bigger. 😄 They’re so desperately mentioning Strike’s largeness, as if beating it over our heads could actually make us not see barely-6-foot and slender Tom Burke.

“Couple more potatoes wouldn’t hurt.” And his FACE! 🥰

Glenister is a really good actor. I always listen to the Strike audiobooks that he narrates, and I was worried hearing his voice in the show would be confusing, but it’s not because he sounds so different. Can’t wait for him reading “Troubled Blood” to me! 🎧

Is it a coincidence that Drummond’s art gallery has a painting of a horse in its front window? I think not.

I love that soft blue shirt they put Cormoran in. Makes him look very huggable. *blushes*

“Not sure I would make a convincing goddaughter either.”😂

So in England you can just walk up to a minister’s house and ring the doorbell without any security people stopping you? Interesting.

Chiswell just shutting the door in Cormoran’s face. RUDE.😠

The brown contact lenses. 👀 Okay, they make her look different, but not THAT different. It’s her sudden posh accent that’s the real stunner.

The panic attacks. Holliday plays them so well, I almost feel like I can’t breathe myself. 😧

I was expecting the Houses of Parliament to look a little less like a stuffy basement full of old junk. *ducks*

Barclay! Definitely looking more attractive than his description in the book. And I thought I’d gotten food at understanding Scottish. I haven’t. *turns subtitles on*

Izzy is the only Chiswell offspring who doesn’t make me want to immediately vomit.

“Venetia. Like the blinds.” Oh God. 🙈

Winn is such a creep. 🤮 Poor Robin. GET AWAY FROM HER YOU LEECH!

Of course Matt doesn’t want Robin to wear the Green Dress. Twat.🙄

The house warming party. I always wonder why Robin doesn’t have friends of her own. I have a feeling Matt has something to do with that.

The earrings. So we will see Robin finding out Matt’s cheating on her! I can’t wait for her to rip him a new one! 😈

Robin calls Cormoran - and it’s not Coco but Lorelei who picks up. That’s a smart change from the book. And it makes her the rebound girl. Which she doesn’t deserve, but it is what it is.

“And she bakes.” 🥴 Is it just me wondering how Lorelei got that cake into the tin without ruining the icing?!

Flashback to The Hug™️. God, their faces are so close. Cormoran is so soft. Nnnnhhhggggg.

Enter the plaid shirt. Lumber!Cormoran is a good look on him! 😍

The Armchair of Sadness™️. Of course that’s where the devastating phone call to Robin’s house happens! The disbelief and disappointment on Cormoran’s face is heart rending. 😢💔

@lulacat3 and I have already established the continuity error with Cormoran’s facial injuries suddenly missing when he’s reached the pub. (And they should still be there; he’s still wearing the plaid shirt from that same evening.) If I were the makeup person I would have been deeply regretful of having missed dabbing fake injuries on Tom’s face again.

The Uffington Horse. Robin’s in appropriate Wellingtons, weather jacket and a beanie for their outing. Cormoran is wearing what he always wears, and Tom clearly wishes he had a beanie. At least he gets to wear a t-shirt under his eternally blue shirts this season. REVOLUTION! 😄

Sure. Let’s just go and dig for a corpse with a shovel so conveniently available! Just the two of them - one delicate Robin and one invalid. And then Robin finds the bones after ten seconds of digging. No further comment. 🙄

But I like the change with Cormoran’s leg. As stupidly heroic as he acted in the book, I like it better in the show where he has to acknowledge his handicap and Robin takes charge.

The bones. Dun-dun-DUN!

(Good first episode, although all in all the pacing wasn’t quite right yet, and compared to the book it all felt a bit rushed. I liked episode two better.)

[Please scroll to the end for trigger warnings. It’s potentially important and about Laurent’s uncle in this chapter. Unless you think you won’t be triggered and you don’t like spoilers]

Laurent only got used to sleeping alone after his parents died.

Before that he would fall asleep on the couch in his mother’s arms or in Auguste’s bed with him. Either way he would wake up in his own room and with no recollection of how he ended up there. He’s never had the need – nor he wanted to – learn how to sleep by himself. It was one of his father’s biggest pet peeves, but Auguste always said Laurent shouldn’t pay his father any mind and Laurent really liked to sleep with others by his side. He felt the safest like this.

When his parents got in the accident though, Laurent didn’t have much of a choice anymore. His brother became too busy to let Laurent cuddle him until he was completely asleep.

After his parents’ death, there was only one person apart from Auguste that seemed interested in letting Laurent share a bed – and Laurent didn’t like this one. His uncle was just weird about it at first and he made Laurent feel uncomfortable enough that in the days Laurent was left under his care so Auguste could go out and sort things – either at work or so that he could talk to lawyers about the family money – Laurent would lock himself in his room and pretend he didn’t listen when his uncle knocked at the door or tried to push it open.

There had been this one time when Laurent was worried his uncle might knock the door down and he had to press his pillow over his head until the pounding on the door stopped and his uncle stopped cursing him for keeping the door locked.

After that there was no more sleeping with anyone.

Until his uncle filled a lawsuit claiming Auguste wasn’t fit to take care of Laurent and he should have the custody instead. It must’ve been something his uncle lied about - that got him to win Laurent’s provisory custody. Laurent never learned more than just that.

Auguste sat down with him one afternoon, the day before Laurent was supposed to move in with his uncle’s, to tell Laurent he was doing the best he could but “he screwed up and he wasn’t about to lie and say that there was a chance he could reverse the judge's decision.” The look in Auguste’s face was what kept Laurent from crying himself out. ‘Does that mean they’re going to make me go live with uncle for good?’ Laurent asked regardless of what Auguste just told him.

Auguste's smiled had been sad then, while he ruffled Laurent’s hair and said ‘Probably’.

The night after that was, to this day, the worst in Laurent’s life. He didn’t unpack when he arrived at his uncle’s house. Laurent's room had no door. He decided he would get away even if that was the last thing he did and that much he was sure of.

His uncle said he was going to take a shower – and Laurent supposes he did. He walked without clothes from his room all the way to the bathroom, shamelessly crossing Laurent’s room on his way in a nonchalant way as though it wasn’t the single most disgusting thing Laurent has ever seen.

As soon as Laurent heard the water run, he jumped off his bedroom window. He climbed down the roof using the tiles.

The only thing Laurent took with him was a backpack full of things he stuffed in it in a hurry, the two hundred bucks he’s been saving for a new bike, the clothes he was wearing since the morning and the jacket Auguste undressed and put on Laurent’s shoulders right before Laurent left their home and got into their uncle’s car.

What kept Laurent from going back home was the knowledge he’d be putting Auguste in trouble. He just kept running.

It took almost all of Laurent’s money to get himself bus tickets from Arles to Chasteigne, from Charteigne to Allier, from Allier to Sicyon, from Sicyon to the countryside in Dice. It took the rest of it to find something to eat during those four and a half (nearly five) days on the run.

Then he was completely alone in this ranch and there was no sleeping with anyone anymore ever.

Damen was the one to ruin Laurent’s progress. Damen spoiled him with his company in bed. That warm huge body curled up against Laurent’s own and their fingers intertwined.

Laurent meant to talk to him. To break things up between them, thank him for all the kindness and all the help over the years. Tell him Laurent's saved enough money to start a new life somewhere else – which was partially true, at least. Laurent meant to leave. He did.

It was planned.

But Damen showed up in a great mood, all smiles, celebrating he was assigned the pro-bono case he was promised and he was so, so happy that Laurent couldn’t bring himself to spoil it. Besides, it could be their last time and Laurent wanted to spoil that even less. They could talk a day or two later.

So, when Laurent woke up dead in the night because he felt the sudden empty space in his bed, it was Damen’s fault not Laurent’s. And if it made Laurent’s chest ache more than it rationally should, Damen was to blame too.

“What are you doing?” Laurent heard himself sleepy and rougher than normal.

Damen had his back to Laurent, seated on the ground with a small pile of book to his right. “Did I wake you?”

“Yes,” Laurent hissed.

Damen chuckled. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Laurent fought back a smile, a yawn, his blushing and the twist in the pit of his stomach at the endearment. “What are you doing?” he repeated.

Damen looked over his shoulder to meet Laurent’s gaze. “I needed some water and almost knock these over,” he pointed at the books that had once been on Laurent’s table “Then I just... looked.”

“You’re going through my stuff.”

“Yes,” Damen replied, though it wasn’t a question “I’m sorry. I just wanted to see what you like to read and I,” he took a dreadful breath “I found this.”

Laurent blinked part of the sleepiness away. The small reading lamp that he had on his desk was lit and illuminating faintly the spot where Damen was. Laurent was able to identify the book Damen held – it had a deep scratch on the hard cover and most of its dark blue fainted leaving nothing but a greyish color left. The edges were a little ripped from rubbing and shaking in the backpack Laurent took with him all those years ago and being handled too many times over the course of the very lonely years that followed.

“What happened to your family?” Damen asked in the quiet.

Laurent sat up, more awake now than he should be at this hour. The red numbers of the clock showed a three, a two and an eight. Forcing himself to Damen’s side on the carpet, Laurent folded his legs under him; he also forced his words through gritted teeth “My parents died in a car crash when I was twelve years old,” he got the photo album from Damen’s hands and opened it “This is my mom,” he pointed “This is my dad.”

He shouldn’t be saying. He knew he shouldn’t be saying because he was about to leave. It wasn’t smart to be telling Damen personal things now.

“You take after your mother,” Damen said.

“I do,” he continued anyway “I was closer to her – my father was a complicated man. Or I was. These were taken right after I was born, so they’re not looking their best, but I promise, my mother was the most beautiful woman.”

“I think she looks beautiful in this one. she looks happy.”

This one was a picture of Hennike breastfeeding a new-born Laurent. She held him protectively, smiling down at his too-tiny frame; her hair sticking up in every direction, tied in a knot on the top of her head. Laurent thought she looked beautiful too.

“This one,” Laurent turned the page “They took the day I went to kindergarten for the first time. I cried the whole morning, that’s why my face is so red.”

Damen chuckled and pointed at the picture next to the one Laurent was showing. “And who is this?”

“This is my brother Auguste.” The picture showed a young boy on the verge of puberty. He had golden hair past his shoulders, marked like he just let it down; he was holding a soccer trophy over his head. His smile was giddy and there was a dirt stain on his cheek that matched the ones in his shorts and shirt. His right knee was bleeding.

Laurent had no recollection of that day. By the looks of it, Auguste couldn’t be older than thirteen and if that was the case then Laurent was no older than one. But the energy of the picture and the happiness in Auguste’s face made it feel familiar, like Laurent was there and knew exactly how Auguste’s laughter had sounded the moment the photo was taken.

“Did he die in the accident too?”

“No,” Laurent’s voice was thicker than before “We just lost touch,” when Damen said nothing at that, Laurent added “I ran away. From... my uncle. And him. From the way life was turning out. And we’ve never spoke again.”

Damen nodded. “You never told me how you end up here.”

Laurent really haven’t. He only ever told his story before once, to Egeria when she found him; it had been his device to convince her to let him stay and don’t give his location to the police that was, at that point, looking for him everywhere. It almost didn’t work. Egeria, bless her soul, actually tried to argue with Laurent that at least his brother deserved to know where he ran off to and that Auguste would be sick with worry by now but Laurent was too afraid of what it’d mean to tell Auguste what was happening.

Thinking back now Laurent realizes his desperation and naivety had kept him from seeing things for what they were; had he contacted Auguste like Egeria suggested, Laurent could’ve testified against his uncle, told everyone about his suspicious behavior and perhaps the very fact that he ran away in the first day in his uncle’s care would’ve been enough to convert the custody back to Auguste. Who knows.

Later, when he did try to find Auguste again a few years after, Laurent watched him from a distance, holding a woman’s hand and a baby in his arms, getting out of the house that had once been Laurent’s too. Laurent didn't try to approach. It was the last he saw of Auguste.

“I haven’t,” Laurent finally said; he shut the photo album with a ‘clap’ and placed it back on his table. He guided Damen to the bed and then, after a breath, he started to speak.

Devlog - About combat, or: let’s threaten the player

So here’s the devlog about combat that I was going to write the other week but then the camera one turned out way too long!

And if you thought the camera one was long, boy do I have a surprise for you...

So here’s a fairly long (and a little bit rant-y) write-up of my thought process about to combat or not to combat, and how to raise the stakes in a horror game in order to give more substance to the ‘horror’ part.

*Emphasis on thought process because as the game is still in development, I’m still figuring out the proper mechanics of it all

When we first started making this game, one of the first things that we ended up establishing was that there would be no combat. And looking back I’m not sure why - it just kind of... was. I guess it was to make things easier, but on hindsight we really should have thought that more thoroughly.

So that was the first version of the game that we developed (we had a sort of demo alpha thing done as a student project), but right away there were some glaring issues that needed to be addressed (hence the whole ‘reestructuring of the game’ that I’ve mentioned a few times before). One of the biggest issues weren’t exactly about combat, but rather how to create a tense atmosphere for the player. So follow me down the rabbit hole until I get to the bit about combat!

So. We’re making a horror game, right? And when you’re making a horror game you don’t want the player to feel all safe and happy and calm, you want them to feel tense, to be on edge, and, most importantly, you want to scare the living shit out of them. So how do we go about achieving that?

(No, not jumpscares, you cut that shit out right now)

What I think you should to (emphasis on I and think, as in, personal opinion, and you should, as in, me making this game) is basically make the player feel threatened. You make the player feel scared to enter a room because they don’t know what might be lurking inside. Have a constant threat of something looming over the player’s head everywhere they go. And while that might be an easy concept to grasp, the big issue lies in what exactly that threat is.

(No, not jumpscares! I said stop that!)

So here’s the thing about jumpscares:

They’re not a bad thing... when used in conjunction with other things. Used by itself, it’s just a very cheap way to get a reaction from the player. Sure, a monster popping out of nowhere to scream in your face is going to startle you - but that’s just it. It’s startling the player, not scaring them. If your brother hid in the dark to pop out and scream at you when you come in the room, you’re gonna be startled. And then you’re gonna be angry because that’s just not what normal person should be doing, Peter.

But anyway. A jumpscare is also only really effective the first few handful of times, because after that it loses its power and the player will probably just be going ‘Oh, boo to you too, Mr. Monster’. You need to save up on the jumpscares to only use them when a perfect opportunity arises (like when the tension is at its highest, or when the player is least expecting it and quickly build tension). There are a lot of situations where a jumpscare can come in handy, but it should never be used by itself. If you’re gonna Boo! at the player, Boo! at the player and then do something else along with it.

(Also I have a jumpscare pet peeve when jumpscares make absolutely no sense in-universe. Like, I can understand a monster screaming - monsters are, you could say, prone to shrieking and loud noises, so it makes sense. But when a horror game or movie have a thing pop out with a loud sound, a thing that by all means and laws of physics should make no sound whatsoever, it just grinds my gears so friggin much. Worse yet when the characters react to it! Boo, camera cut! Boo, title card says TUESDAY! Boo, there’s some paint on the wall! Boy what a loud wall!)

But I digress.

So, about the threatening the player bit...

How do we threaten the player to make them feel unsafe? That was the trickiest part to figure out during initial development.

One option is going for the being chased by enemies route. Think something like Outlast or Amnesia, where there’s no combat and you have to run away and hide from monsters to survive. Aaand we kind of just ruled that out. Partly because the map isn’t all that big which might have just ended up with the enemy and player running around in circles, and partly because if you don’t do it properly you might end up with something less threatening, and more troublesome. Like, say, you’re in the middle of completing a puzzle and suddenly an enemy pops out and you have to drop everything to run all the way back to shake them off to finally be able to go back and do what you were trying to do in the first place - that kind of troublesome.

A second option is having combat. Or enemies that appear and that you can deal with in one way or the other. Aaand we also ruled that out and I just don’t know what the friggity frack we were thinking. I was very dumb, essentially. I think I was influenced by this current trend in horror games to have no combat whatsoever, in order to maybe leave the player feeling helpless in the face of danger. And honestly, I should have just taken a long hard look at the horror classics that are influencing this game and realized: the!! friggin!! combat!! it’s there!!! dammit!!

So, no chasing and no combat. What the hell do we do?

Basically I did this thing of trying to make an idea work that clearly does not work but I tried and tried anyway instead of letting it go and it’s basically a really bad thing that I do, and now that I’m finally aware of doing it I’m trying really hard to stop.

Note to self: if an idea isn’t working, let it go! Try something else!

Long story short what we tried to do was this thing where being around an enemy drained your health/sanity/whatever and you needed to escape the room to be safe by pressing a series of quick time events to open the door and leave. It didn’t work.

So there’s combat now! The end!

Well, okay, not really.

So, combat at last.

When I say combat, I don’t mean the action-game-one-man-army kind of combat. I mean the combat that’s of the I-have-a-rusty-pipe-and-will-smack-the-shit-out-of-any-ugly-thing-that-comes-my-way-oh-god-what-the-hell-is-that-maybe-I-should-just-run kind. Think of the first Silent Hill games, the first Resident Evils and even Fatal Frame, where the combat essentially boils down to being a ghost paparazzo.

So, now that we’ve decided on combat, the looming threat that I mentioned before becomes fairly well defined: it’s the possibility of an enemy encounter. You can even play with that expectation, like having one or two fake out scares (just do not overdo - I’m looking at you, scenes of a random cat jumpscaring you out of nowhere), or by pulling the rug out from underneath the player by having an enemy pop out in a seemingly safe area and give them trust issues.

But for the player to dread meeting an enemy means the combat can’t be easy - but it also can’t be frustrating otherwise it just fails as a game mechanic. The player can’t breeze through enemy encounters, each one needs to feel like an actual threat that the player has to deal with (either by killing them or tactically retreating a.k.a. running away please don’t hurt me).

Kind of a side rant: Honestly, if someone asked me what the downfall of the Resident Evil games as a horror series was, I’d probably say it started with the combat. Not all of it, but I’d say a good deal of the blame was there. *Please note I haven’t played either RE7 (as someone who tends to get motion sickness, first person games are things that I avoid) or the RE2 remake (this one I will get as soon as it goes on sale because games are expensive and I got no money).

I mean, I still love RE4 with all my heart and those Regenerators will live on inside my nightmares, but I thought earlier games felt much more tense because the combat in 4 was a lot more action-y than horror-y, though it hadn’t entirely tilted over to the action side... Then 5 came and ruined it all and then 6 came and was like ‘what’s a horror game’ (and I say this as someone who had fun with 6!) and the rest is history.

But it did get me thinking about one thing: the combat mechanics. I found myself frustrated when trying to go back to older Resident Evil games and struggled to deal with the bare bones combat and the clunky tank controls (granted, the latter more than the former), so I started wondering how much of the tension in older games had to do with actual horror, and how much of it was due to the insecurity you get when dealing with awkward controls in a moment of crisis.

So, having figured out that I wanted combat, the question became ‘how to combat’. Or something along those lines. I didn’t want to make things too easy, but I also didn’t want to make the player frustrated.

Here’s the part where I repeat what I said right at the top of this post: as the game is still in development, I’m still figuring out the proper mechanics of it all. So basically I’m just gonna register here what my experiments have been so far, and, like I said in the camera devlog, there are no tank-like controls because those are just a pain to deal with.

So at first I made it so you could only attack after aiming... But then that felt clunky as hell considering this is melee. So I scrapped that idea and made it so you could walk and attack at the same time.

I did keep the aiming part though, but made it optional: you can still walk and attack, but attacking while aiming will deal higher damage.

And in the spirit of keeping the player from just mashing the attack button I’m trying out a little something: Chaining attacks to deal higher damage but also making it so that, should the player press the attack button again too fast, the animation will restart, basically cancelling the previous attack. This would be a nightmare in a fast paced action game but since it’s not, I’m hoping it’ll force the player to be a bit more careful when confronting an enemy without it becoming a frustrating mechanic so, again, it needs more playtesting!

Also enemies can also chain attack you for higher damage!

And that’s basically it! I’m sorry if after all this buildup it ended up being disappointing oops

But considering Observo is going to be a somewhat short game I don’t have the time to develop a complex battle system that’s just not gonna be used a lot in a game with puzzles as the main focus. So that’s it! Thank you so much to anyone who’s still reading this at this point, haha

“No, Chloé. Since Sabrina will be out of town for the rest of the week, you’ll have to pick a different partner for the art project.”

When he was six years old, Nathaniel’s mother had told him that life was about opportunities. Every moment was an opportunity, from the greatest of life’s changes to the smallest of life’s details. Every moment was a choice—a choice of stay or go, a choice of start or stop, a choice of do or don’t. Every choice had its consequences and it was on those consequences that human lives were decided. On those consequences that opportunities were taken.

And it was a simple fact of life, she had told him, that the consequences unknown, the opportunities left untaken, were the ones he would dwell on the most.

Perhaps it was the thought that he was sick of dwelling that brought Nathaniel to take the opportunity presented before him. That brought Nathaniel to raise his hand.

“I’ll do it.”

A general level of friendly chatter had sprouted in the class as students had begun discussing project plans, but conversation eased to halt then. He knew every set of eyes in the room was on him. His eyes were only focused on one.

“No,” she immediately said. She addressed the teacher, but those cold eyes never left him. “Madame Bustier, I’d prefer to do the project on my own.”

He tried not to let his fear show. He tried not to run from that soul-shaking gaze.

“Chloé, that would leave Nathaniel without a partner too. Plus, working with the class artist will be beneficial to your art grade.” In his peripheral, he saw Madame Bustier wave him forward. “Thank you for volunteering, Nathaniel. You can come sit next to Chloé for the rest of class.”

The twitch of her jaw. A look like murder. Then eye contact was broken and in just that split second before she turned to face forward again, Nathaniel swore he saw something more. Something painful.

If he did, it was hidden again by the time he was sitting down next to her. The rest of the class went on with their discussions, though he didn’t miss the glances of Marinette and Nino as they not-so-subtly spectated.

“What the fuck are you doing, Kurtzberg?” Chloé immediately snapped. “What do you want?��

“What’s the matter, Chloé?” he asked absently as he opened his sketch book to a new page. “I thought you’d be happy to have a partner who can do all the work for you.”

Wait. Shit. The words had slipped out almost as if reflex—fighting fire with fire. Except in this case, it was more like fighting a candle with a flamethrower.

Her jaw fell slightly ajar and her brows pinched together in fury. Her eyes though; swimming in her eyes was a splash of genuine hurt.

Chloé pressed her lips together and looked away without another word. She began gathering her supplies and throwing them in her purse. Guilt was an immediate led weight in his stomach and he knew that in his head, he would be kicking himself for many years to come for being rude to his fucking soulmate. Especially when he was actively trying to get closer to her.

“Wait, Chloé, I’m sorry.” He set his hand on her notebook just as she was reaching for it and that fed up look was on him again.

“Look, I don’t know why you wanted to be my partner and I don’t care. You’re right. You can do the project by yourself.” Even though he wasn’t holding the notebook hostage, she made a point to yank it out from under his hand. A moment later, she stood up and the school bell followed her out the door as if on cue.

He scrambled to grab his stuff and rushed out after her. She had a naturally fast walking pace, but she was definitely going faster than usual. “Chloé, wait!” She had already managed to make it to the school’s front door when he caught up to her. “Chloé!”

“Leave me alone, Kurtzberg,” she spat, still not slowing down.

“Wait!” He caught her wrist and the tips of his fingers met the exact mark that had started this all.

She spun to face him. “What!?”

He didn’t let go. He didn’t move. He was paralyzed under that icy gaze and he didn’t think this far and he didn’t know what to say but he needed to say something and, “The first time I ever spoke to you was when I defended Marinette’s floral design against you,” he blurted.

The worst possible combination of confusion and irritation. “So??”

“So…” His heart slammed against the inside walls of his chest and he knew he couldn’t turn back now. “That exact design is tattooed on the back of my left shoulder.”

At first, there was no change in her expression. It was as if her entire being had come to a screeching halt and the only thing her body knew to do was keep breathing. Then the wrinkles in her forehead softened the slightest bit as understanding took confusion’s place. Irritation, however, remained steady.

“Okay, and?”

He blinked. “And? Chloé, we’re—,”

“Soulmates?” she cut him off. “Yeah, I know. Newsflash, Kurtzberg,” she slipped from his grasp and held up her hand, putting his signature on display, “Your art gets spread around the school like wildfire. I’ve known for years.”

Years.

“Why didn’t you—?”

“Tell you? Are you serious? How was I supposed to tell you when you hated me from the start? When I had to watch you date someone else for two years, call someone else your soulmate for two fucking years? How was I supposed to tell you!?”

That cold fury didn’t budge, but now that hint of hurt he had seen earlier was as present as the guilt weighing heavy in his chest. Seeing her then, an avalanche of understanding came crashing down over his head. He doubted the pain he could clearly see now was even half of what she’d been holding inside. He didn’t know. He had no idea. This whole time, his soulmate was in pain because of him and he didn’t know.

“I… I’m sorry,” was all he could think to say but God that didn’t even begin to cover it.

“Yeah,” she said flatly. “Me too.”

With that, she turned to leave, and again, Nathaniel caught her wrist. Heaving a tired sigh of frustration, she faced him once again. “What do you want, Nathaniel?”

He didn’t know, if he was being honest.

In this moment, he wasn’t in love with her. He wasn’t desperately hoping to kiss her, nor did her clear displeasure with his presence make his heart break. His pulse didn’t spike from a look alone and his name on her tongue sounded no different from any other. She was beautiful—he would have to be blind not to see that—but he didn’t find himself sneaking peaks at her during class nor filling his sketchbook with her visage. When he woke in the morning, his first thought wasn’t of her and he didn’t see her face behind closed eyes when he lay down at night.

He didn’t know her favorite color or her favorite song. He couldn’t tell you what her pet peeves were or what tiny joys she found in life. He had no idea if she preferred the books or the movies, the comics or the show. He couldn’t possibly guess what seemingly harmless topic would spark a 10 minute rant, or what activities she secretly loved that she never wanted anyone to know. Did she like pineapple on pizza? Sprinkles on ice cream? Could she walk somewhere without listening to music? Did she take a water bottle with her everywhere? Chapstick? Lip gloss? Did she prefer writing with pen or pencil? Blue or black ink? Coffee or tea? Hot or iced?

He didn’t know. Chloé Bourgeois was, for all intents and purposes, a total and complete stranger. He didn’t even know if she was human.

“I want to know you,” he finally said.

“Why?”

She was listening. Giving him a chance. The anger was fading from her tone and though she sounded tired, for the first time since he saw her tattoo, he felt he might actually have a chance. An opportunity.

His grip on her wrist tightened the slightest bit, as if afraid that if he let go, she would leave and that opportunity would be lost forever. “Because I don’t know about you, but I know that it would be the biggest regret of my life if I never even tried to get to know my soulmate.”

The slight brightening of her eyes. The tiny intake of breath. It was subtle, almost nonexistent, but he didn’t miss it. The reaction to him calling her his soulmate.

“But you hate me,” she argued. He could hear her desire to fight subsiding with every word. “Don’t try to tell me that you don’t, because we both know that isn’t true.”

“Yeah,” he admitted, “I do.” His first impression of her had been awful and what he’d learned from Marinette after that had only made it worse. She was a bully, she was selfish, and with her father being the mayor and the richest man in Paris, she was also untouchable. He had never thought to look any deeper than that, because that was all the reason he’d needed to dislike her. But if she was his soulmate…

He shrugged, giving her the smallest of smiles. “And I’m clearly wrong.”

Chloé didn’t say anything. She stood there, looking back and forth between his eyes with an expression that he could only describe as exhausted and unsure. Eventually, her gaze dropped to where he still held her wrist.

With one last reluctant squeeze, he released her. She cradled the wrist in her other hand and swiped a thumb over the tattoo, staring at it as she thought.

“You’re right,” she finally said, voice low. When she looked up again, her usual air of confidence had returned. “You are wrong.” He couldn’t glean from her expression whether that was good or bad. He swallowed thickly, waiting on her every word. She let out a long breath, and with it, an immense weight seemed to ease off her shoulders. “And I probably am too.”

So…Did that mean…?

She fished her cell phone out of her purse and unlocked it. “Give me your number,” she said as she handed it over.

A flurry of pins and needles washed through him then as sincere blue eyes met his. It was the first time she had ever looked at him like that—ever looked at him with anything but antagonism. It wasn’t a happy look, but it was new. And it wasn’t…cold. Her eyes shined like the first day of spring and he could feel their warmth slowly spreading through him. It was a feat just to look away.

He tried not to let his fingers shake as he typed his information into her phone and handed it back.

“I’ll text you about the art project,” she said, and with one last look over her shoulder, walked away.

Towels Equal Power

[I still need to write that Bellagio (and Vegas) got wrong and right, but one of the things the Bellagio got right is so huge that it needs its own entry.]

Longtime readers will know that one of my biggest pet peeves about going on vacation is when a hotel rations towels. I don't necessarily mean in the bathroom -- most hotels allow you to request more and honestly I use my bathroom towels more than once even on vacay.

The type of towel rationing which is decidedly not luxurious is when each hotel guest is permitted just one beach towel or is expected to use a towel card in order to get a lone towel for the beach or pool. Giving over room number, last name and ID is more like being at the DMV than being at a tropical locale.

I first came across this at Club Med, where you are given a towel card for a single towel. I argued and got an additional one. By the end of that trip I managed to wrangle six towel cards which means if ever in prison I would surely run shit. I have long acquainted towel acquisition with prison rules. Meaning in prison the person who has the cigarettes, drugs, or extra commissary is a boss. You want an extra honey bun, well then you owe me five when your commissary comes in. And bitch you better pay up. But being in prison doesn't remind you of a vacation, right? So any hotel that makes me feel I have to hoard towels and plan out my days of having to secure a prime chair gets a big thumbs down from me.

A single beach towel might be doable if there was another way to save a seat at the pool and beach. But because people get out there at 6am to save a coveted beach seat under a palapa and/or a pool seat under an umbrella one needs to get up super early and place their beach towel on a seat in order to be assured of a spot for the day. But if you want a seat at both the pool and beach you need more than one towel. And that also means you have no towel to wrap around you or use to actually dry off.

Now Club Med isn't what I'd say a luxurious property so I could kind of see why they are rationing towels. (It's not an environmental thing -- plenty of plastic everywhere and unlimited bath towels.)

What ends up happening is that people will take a towel off someone's chair and return it so they get an extra towel card for the following day. And then when you are cardless you have to argue with the towel gestapo to get another.

Either way, not what I'd call a relaxing vacation.

Then more recently Club Med did a huge renovation and started charging more than double for their top-tier rooms in Turks and Caicos. We are talking to the tune of about $550 a night. They got their 4th trident which means they are supposed to be like a five-star resort. Yet the towel issues continued. Thankfully in the VIP rooms you are given two towel cards per person and they are less likely to argue with you if you want an additional towel or two.

Most other places that are considered luxury properties handle the beach towel service as an amenity that is included in your resort fee. I prefer this. They set up your chairs and umbrella at the pool and beach which means you don't have to bother yourself keeping track of towels. They put two or three on each chair for you and are happy to provide more throughout the day as needed or desired. Most resorts i go to charge hefty amenity fees - Gurneys, the Ritz, 1 Hotel all charge them. They tend to run from $25-$40 per day and ensure you get two seats at both the pool or beach. Loews in Miami charges that same amenity fee but then fucks you over on umbrellas at the beach. You get chairs and unlimited beach towels but still need to fork over an additional $25/day for an umbrella. This irks me to no end. [For this overcharge I encourage everyone to take home their famous black and white striped beach towels to compensate.]

My favorite place in the world is the Viceroy Riviera Maya. Just 40 private villas where they indulge your every whim. While super pricey (all inclusive will run you about $1000/day) the best part aside from the personalized chef-prepped unlimited food is that there is no additioanl resort fee, your chairs are waiting for you all made up with four towels each, an umbrella at both the pool and beach. (Add to that they offer chilled hand towels every few hours, wash your sunglasses and flip flops and bring out little treats like frozen fruit and smoothies, and it is paradise!)

At my recent trip to the Bellagio in Vegas I noticed they got something very wrong: while there were hundreds, if not thousands of chairs at the five pools, they'd all be filled by 7:10am. The pool areas opened at 7am -- the elevator wouldn't even go down to the pool area until then -- and people would be running out to snag chairs. There were literally lines at hte elevator at 6:45 with people teeming to be the first in. This ruined the trip for me and others because how the hell wants to be out and about at 7am just to be assured a spot under an umbrella by the pool? (There were tons of other less prime chairs but they were simply on a concrete area with no pool, bathroom area or bar and also didn't have shade from the sun or offered umbrellas.)

But the one thing that Bellagio does right is: UNLIMITED BEACH towels. While they don't set up your seat for you (downer!) you don't even have to give your name or room number to the towel window in order to get any amount you want. Imagine: Towel Nirvana. Clouds of warm, white, fluffy towels as far as the eye can see. You want an extra one for a pillow? No problem. Want to use one to use as a turban around your wet hair? Bingo. Want to fashion a terrycloth gown out of one and dance around the sprinkers? Go for it! Now that is what I call vacation!

At one point seeing that I was up at an ungodly 6am to get a pool seat I asked for a whopping eight towels and set up two chairs in different areas of the pool -- one that gets sun in the morning and shade later and the other which got shade in the morning and sun in late afternoon. I bounced around between both, a sort of vacation from my vacation.

This is a long-winded way of saying very clearly that in the world of luxury vacations, towels equal power.

So imagine my surprise when on the aforementioned recent Vegas vacation, while ensconced in a terry-clad chair in a prime spot, reading Kelly Oxford's memoir I came upon this passage:

The only thing I like better than free frozen grapes delivered to me is icy cool serendipity.

100 Character Questions for Dust

So there was a thing I saw a while back that was supposed to be one of those things where someone sends a number, and you answer a question for it, and instead of doing that, I just went ahead and filled all of them out for my reaper character, Dust, an extremely apathetic hitman for the forces of The Divines and the Abyss who goes after necromancers and undead creatures.

I spent too much time on this. It’s going under the break.

1. What do they smell like?

He smells faintly of lemons and gunsmoke.

2. What is their voice like?

He doesn’t have a voice, and speaks through sign language, writing, or occasionally telepathy if in the presence of a mindreader/psychic.

3. What is their biggest motivator?

He exists almost completely for his job, that of collecting escaped or kidnapped souls and executing necromancers on behalf of the forces of The Divines and The Abyss. He comes to realize that he truly believes the dead should rest in peace, or they should endure whatever torment they’ve earned in the afterlife, and those who disturb them need to be put down.

4. What is their most embarrassing memory?

He has no memory of his life before he became The Reaper, and due to his uncomfortable amounts of apathy toward anything that isn’t his job. He’s basically a supernatural Terminator.

5. How do they deal with/react to pain?

One of the perks of being The Reaper is having an extraordinarily high pain tolerance, to the point where broken limbs are just inconvenient because they keep him from moving properly. However if he takes too much damage, he temporarily fades into a different dimension where he starts to rebuild himself, before reappearing at something he calls a “Sanctuary”, a place that connects him to the mortal plane, and potentially other realms as well. It usually takes him about an hour or so to reform, depending on how messed up he is.

6. What do they like to wear?

Loose hoodies, jeans or sweatpants, sneakers. After he finally starts making friends, they start to encourage him to try finding a better style, and he starts wearing actual outfits that aren’t just lazily put together.

7. Which of their relationships have impacted them most positively?

An angel and demon, who are his connections to The Divines and The Abyss, eventually befriend him and convince him to start acting with more of an identity and personality outside of his job. They offer him advice, and he starts to help them with personal issues that they’re otherwise unable to perform themselves due to certain laws.

8. What’s the weirdest thing they’ve ever eaten?

The first time he tried baking, it didn’t go very well for him. It was especially weird because it was the first time he had tried eating since becoming The Reaper and returning to the mortal realm. He did discover that he actually has a preference for food: lemons.

9. Describe the way that they sleep.

He doesn’t. Instead of sleeping, he reads or practices certain tricks that he feels will help him do his job more efficiently. Later on he starts baking, and learns how to play the cello.

10. What is their favorite food/kind of food?

Anything with lemons, or anything lemon flavored.

11. What do they feel most insecure about?

Nothing that really comes to mind right now.

12. How do they like to dress?

Once he gains a sense of style, he likes to wears grey pants, a black turtleneck, and a black coat.

13. How do they react to feelings of guilt?

Confusion mostly. He doesn’t really know much about being close enough to someone to feel bad if he’s wronged them, and has a sort of blunt logic about all his actions. Though he does try to apologize and understand why what he did hurt them, or why he should feel bad.

14. How do they react to/deal with betrayal?

He’s unsurprised and sort of takes it as a minor inconvenience that he expected. Everyone wants a chance to cheat death afterall.

15. What is their greatest achievement?

Taking down a revenant that had been summoned specifically to slay him, every time he regenerates, thus allowing a prolific Necromancer to work uninterrrupted for an extended period of time. It took a lot of cunning and trickery to take it down, but he managed it.

16. What are they like when they’ve gotten too little sleep?

N/A

17. What are they like when they’re drunk?

N/A

18. What kind of music do they enjoy?

Noir-styled jazz music and piano solos.

19. Are they right or left handed?

Ambidextrous.

20. Fears?

Losing his only friends now that he actually has something he cares about, and failing to live up to the reputation of the previous Reaper.

21. Favorite kind of weather?

Windy nights.

22. Favorite color?

Black and yellow.

23. Do they collect anything?

Non-fiction books, antique weapons, occult texts.

24. Do they prefer either hot or cold weather more?

Cold. He likes having an excuse to wear long coats and scarves and give himself that ominous look of Death waiting with their cloak in the wind.

25. What is their eye color?

He doesn’t have eyes, but his eye-sockets glow with light-blue embers that act as a sort of pupil.

26. What is their race/ethnicity?

His actual body is composed of solidified shadows and smoke that resemble something humanoid, and his head is a skull missing its lower jaw. So, uh, I guess his race is “Grim Reaper”?

27. Hair color?

None.

28. Are they happy where they are currently?

He has friends, a purpose, and a cat. He is content.

29. Are they a morning person?

Can you technically be a morning person if you never sleep?

30. Sunrise or sunset?

Sunset. That’s the time that most Necromancers begin their work, and that means he gets to go to work against them.

31. Are they more messy or more organized?

Organized to a fault.

32. Pet peeves?

Anyone who thinks they can tempt him with knowledge of his previous life, or who call themselves the masters of life and death, and people who make excessively long megalomaniacal speeches.

33. Do they own any objects of significant personal importance?

His pistol that he carries around nearly everywhere. It was his first weapon, and it has the word “Taxes” engraved in the barrel. It was the first clue to his friends that he actually had a personality lurking in that not-so-empty skull of his.

34. Least favorite food?

Blueberries.

35. Least favorite color?

Greenish-brown.

36. Least favorite smell?

Burned lemons or gasoline.

37. When was the last time they cried?

Not since he became The Reaper. He just feels a sort of hollowness now if he ever feels anything close to sad.

38. Were they with anybody the last time they cried?

Nope. Utterly alone.

39. Tell us about one of the times they got injured?

That aforementioned revenant broke his arms and legs and kept him damaged enough to not move, but not regenerate somewhere else. If it weren’t for his Demon contact dragging him out and forcing Dust to claim his mortal home as a sanctuary, he would have been completely boned.

40. Do they have any scars?

Nope.

41. Do they struggle with any mental health issues?

Depression.

42. Do they have any bad habits?

Workaholic, he hyper-focuses on tasks, and isolates himself too much.

43. Why might someone dislike them?

He’s almost too robotic, he’s creepy and silent, he’s literally Death, he’s not very social or good at anything involving social activity, and his humor is very dry since he’s not used to telling jokes or understanding them.

44. Why might someone love them?

He’s studious, loyal to what few friends he has, starts to genuinely care about his purpose and the principles of freedom and rest associated with it, and he’s trying to be better and improve himself outside of just his job. He also never really lies, as he has no reason to most of the time. He’s also nothing if not a professional when it comes to his occupation.

Ahem. He is The Reaper. Who hunts undead. And necromancers. And trapped spirits.

46. Is there anyone they would trust with their lives?

The Angel and Demon who still need names.

Not right now.

Nope.

He’d ignore it, but his friends usually drag him out for something, even if it’s a quiet affair like a trip to a museum or antique store, maybe a restaurant or bakery.

Nope.

N/A.

No idea.

55. What is their zodiac sign?

Apparently it’s “Scorpio”.

Ravenclaw, probably. He doesn’t have the ambition for Slytherin.

Lawful Neutral, later Lawful Good.

Nope.

59. What are their views on death?

Depends on how clean the mirror is. He does believe that souls should be left alone where they are, and the dead should rest in peace, or the damned should endure their punishment until further notice. Anyone who thinks they can rule over Death is sorely mistaken.

60. What is something that they’re sure to laugh at?

He doesn’t really laugh, but he can give the impression of a small smile sometimes.

61. When bored, how do they pass time?

More work, weapon maintenance, target practice, or reading books on new techniques he might incorporate into his own work.

62. Do they enjoy being outside?

It’s too open for him. Too easy to be spotted.

63. Do they have an accent?

He signs, so not really.

64. Upon seeing a slice of chocolate cake, what is their first reaction?

No lemon, no interest.

65. If they knew they were going to die, what would they do/say?

Sigh very heavily and focus on a sanctuary to return to.

Not his thing.

Nope.

Not really, unless it’s something his friends ask him or if it lays souls to rest.

Nope.

He has a fluffy orange cat with a very flat face that he’s named Pluto.

Nope, he’s too apathetic and tired for that.

As patient as Death. God that came out ediger than I intended.

He’s okay at baking, but he’s practicing and getting better.

77. Favorite insult? Do they insult people often?

Doesn’t really insult others at all.

78. How do they act when they’re particularly happy?

He doesn’t show it very well, but he does tend to move a little lighter and allows himself to do some more recreational stuff, like reading a book or practicing his music.

79. What do they do when they learn about other people’s fears?

Remembers it for later.

80. Are they trustworthy?

Unless you’re a necromancer or escaped soul, then yes, you can trust him completely.

81. Do they try to hide their emotions? Are they good at it?

Nope! He’s just very apathetic and not really good at even expressing his emotions.

Another perk of being the Reaper is having very good physical prowess. Something just around an Olympic athlete's level of physique. He’s not the strongest or fastest, but he can at least go for silver and gold most of the time.

83. Are they comfortable with the way they look?

As comfortable as one can be when you have a body that’s literally shadows and a skull.

84. What are some physical features that they find attractive on people?

Nothing really.

85. What kind of personalities do they find attractive?

He just doesn’t really have a type, but he’s quicker to befriend others if they remind him of his Demon and Angel friends.

86. Do they like sweet foods?

Only if it’s lemon flavored.

87. What is their age?

N/A.

88. Are they tall or short or somewhere in between?

Short, somewhere just a hair under 5’3’’

89. Do they wear glasses or contacts?

Neither.

90. Do they consider themselves attractive?

Doesn’t really care.

91. What is their sense of humor like?

Very dry and a little too subtle. He doesn’t make many jokes, but he appreciates gallows humor and some references that he might actually understand. He usually surprises everyone if he ever cracks any kind of joke.

Neutral, or he’s either curious or confused.

93. What kinds of things anger them?

Disrespect toward the dead, anyone who threatens his friends.

94. Outlook on life?

To serve his purpose and find another one that he can choose for himself. He feels like the actual point of life is to live it and earn whatever you do in the afterlife. Wouldn’t have considered that question before he started befriending people.

95. What kind of things make them sad/depressed?

Nothing really, until he’s made aware of just how lonely he actually is. He just kinda forgot what it meant to be anything other than isolated and alone.

96. What is their greatest weakness?

He’s not good with any sort of socializing, and he’s bad at reading people and can be lied to easily. He focuses on his work too much, and ignores the fact that he was once human.

97. What is the greatest strength?

His ability to learn and adapt to any given situation, as well as his perfect memory. He can improvise in just about any situation.

98. Something that they regret?

Ignoring his friends’ invitations and attempts to befriend him for so long.

99. Biggest accomplishment?

Stopping a Lich from ascending to godhood and wiping out his army of undead near single-handedly, but that’s something I’m still tinkering with for the future.

He can be completely silent when he wants to be, and uses that to set up traps to make his job of assassinating undead creatures and necromancers much easier, and sometimes even flashier to spread his reputation and use that to prevent future Necromancers from trying anything.

LAYER ONE : THE OUTSIDE

Name: “Cerigo Sarior, but you won’t find it in any books and few actually use my full name, Hell few actually use my full first name even.”

Eye Color: “Blue, or at least mostly blue. Why do you see some gold in it? I wouldn’t worry about that too much it happens.”

Hair Style/Color: “I am standing right here but fine, if you want me to tell you… why are you writing this down? Whatever, its dark and currently short. It used to be longer but now its not, eventually its going to be longer again and then it will be short. Magic.”

Clothing Style: “Functional. I suppose you could say I like blue but most of the time is not filled with holes and fits is about as far as I think about it.”

48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today?

biggest fear was dying, especially by bombing. keep in mind i grew up in DC post 9/11 and also during the DC sniper era. so like. even living in NW DC which is as nice as it gets i was a paranoid little kid who assumed that people were gonna drop nuclear bombs on us and kill us all. i couldn’t go outside at night by myself cause i couldn’t look for airplanes it was bad

though in general i was just really terrified by death and dying and had a bunch of irrational little habits i HAD to do or else i was Sure I’d Die. eventually i got over it all and generalllllllly don’t have that big fear of death anymore. i guessss the real big Genuine Fear and not anxiety i still keep from that era though is like mass extinction events and shit--like big worldwide epidemics or huge nuclear wars--big shit like that makes me wig out a lot to the point where i can’t watch movies with like huge disease epidemics cause it freaks me out and i can’t pay too much attention to the news or i’ll panic

okay roll call of the squad i can only think of a handful of people i know who’d fit. you, vii, and @andnotwithwisdom are probably the vodka aunts of friends that i’d know. i wouldn’t really peg anyone as a wine mom. if you held me at gun point and i HAD to choose, i feel like @ceruleansage is closest to wine mom or maybe @strewnwithdiamonds

terrible. i live on east coast USA so around october to march it’s Cold. we’ll get random periods of surreal warm weather--as in, 40 degrees one day, 70 the next--and then it’ll drop back down to fucking 20 degrees because the weather here is awful and i hate it the wind hurts my face i hate this place and its cold weather

and while we don’t often get snow we usually get one big snowstorm that fucking drops several feet of white bullshit everywhere

technically my last real hike was with @andnotwithwisdom and i nearly died. we ended up on the appalachian trail, which is basically this several state hiking trail that runs up and down the east coast, entirely on accident. we had to call park services to get directions to escape and ended up in an entirely different park than where we started.

Yes and no... for like the first day of winter when it’s all pretty and pristine but when it get’s to the point of ‘fuck me do i still have toes?’ I’m over it.

4: how do you take your coffee/tea?

I like my coffee with french vanilla creamer and lovingly call it my princess froofroo bullshit drink. On the tea side of things I like herbal without anything added becuase I feel like a fairy drinking flower water.

I love thinking I could, but the only plant I haven’t killed is the one that I keep in my papa’s sunroom where I’m never anywhere near it because everything I touch dies screaming.

I’m all over the place, you can usual tell by my hair tho. Seeing as it sticks straight up on whichever side I sleep on.

Yup, 100% when my friend and I got busted after drinking at her mormon grandmothers house. In retrospect, probably should have done it elsewhere.

At my 13th bday party my friends and I were staying at a house on a golf course and we streaked nude up and down the 18th hole. Till this day I wonder if they had surveillance cameras.

It was a doe deer beanie baby named Whisper. She was that stuffed animal that went everywhere with me. At age 12 I lost her somewhere at my cousins house and am still sad about it till this day. She had one eye and a pink nail polish stain on her chest. Bonus story: my oldest friend @haleygalik had that same beanie baby and gave it to me since I was so upset about losing mine. I still have Whisper 2.0 till this day

Dogs that beg when you try to eat. My dad passed that down to me. I will literally stare a dog straight in the eye and eat slowly. I have this wedding band set that I found when my great grandma jay passed away. I think it was her wedding rings, but I never knew for sure. I wish I knew their story more then anything.

There’s a shop that’s in our town called grump monkey. Its small and kinda modern themed but still comfy.
