Tell us ur DUNC thoughts pal! <3
what can I even say about DUNC other than i fucking love it!!! i've been a shameless dick rider for denis villeneuve ever since Sicario, and I went to the cinema to see DUNC and DUNC 2 which. one thing about me is i hate cinemas. i didn't even go to the cinema for scorsese or yorgo lanthimos or top gun 2 so you know it's serious
the visuals are straight up incredible, the casting is peak, the material is handled with a lot of what feels like genuine love and passion, the lady going ham on the arabic yodeling on the OST is a queen, and in general wrt dune fans watching DUNC, I imagine that's how people who like Tolkien felt when Peter Jackson's LOTR came out
i can't wait for the conflict between the matriarchal eugenicists with milking machines and the patriarchal eugenicists with breeding tanks
which is what the books are really about. oh, and i guess the galactic jihad also happens, so that's fun

obsessed with that one small passage from the silmarillion where sauron goes to eönwë for forgiveness and says how some believed he was truly repenting. obsessed with the idea that maybe sauron could have been redeemed.

Hi! I'm bothering you with questions. What's a Tolkien headcanon that makes you chew drywall?
Elrond and Elros did not go with Maedhros and Maglor quietly. They didn't cower in fear and simply hold still while they were scooped up. They were scared for sure. Terrified. But they didn't go quietly. Elros kicked Maedhros in the shin and bit him when Maedhros tried to scoop him up to get a better look, and when Maedhros dropped him in surprise he scrambled for the door as fast as his little legs could carry him. And Elrond would've clawed Maglor's eyes out if it weren't for his helm. They spit and they kicked and they screamed because they knew who these guys were and they'd heard the stories about their uncles and they absolutely thought they were about to die.
And man does it make me absolutely feral. I think all headcannons about Sirion are valid and I love reading everybody else's interpretations, but the idea that Elrond and Elros fought with every inch of their tiny bodies against the last sons of Feanor and actually landed a few hits? That Maedhros got a new scar from Elros that day? I have art planned and in the draft stage for it right and now and someday I will manage to write my own version of kidnap fam, but in my head they didn't go quietly. They thought they were going to die and also even in their young minds they understood that there was an implication that, if the sons of Feanor were here dragging them out of their hiding place -- and their mother hadn't come for them? There was absolutely the understanding that they'd murdered her (even if, in actuality, that's not what happened) and these little six-seven year olds would not stand for it. That's their mom, and they will avenge her, and also? They'll avenge themselves. If the sons of Feanor want to kidnap them or kill them, Elros and Elrond were gonna make it difficult every inch of the way.

omg i just read the “getting caught making out” and was wondering if you could do it with craig’s gang aswell🙈
craigs gang getting caught making out
an: HELLOO!! i am back from vegas, my brother wasted 300 on gambling and i have never been so motivated to kill someone, also i tried wine and.... yeah idk how to feel oh also i am not making jimmy bc like i said idk how to potray him im so sorry :( also like always 16-17
clyde
hes so mad at you rn, how could you!! while he was out in the field sweating his ass off you were on the bleachers talking so gently to a boy.
he looked over to you and the boy had his arm wrapped around you while you laughed at his joke. but thanks to you he played well, out of jealousy and anger. after the game that they won, cheers could be heard and only then did you realize you literally missed your boyfriend's game. so now here you two were beside the bleachers making out, after the game he sulked and you reassured him with a kiss but one thing lead to another and you two are making out.
your back pressed against the metals while his hand hold your head so you don't feel the metal, his other hand cupping your face holding you close, it was slow and wet, he kissed so well you loved it when you maked out with him or kissed him he was always so experienced.
since you two were on the side bleachers that was far away from everything nobody could really see, stan and craig was searching for him because coach wanted to take a team photo for him to display, searching everywhere and giving up sitting on one of the bleacers. "dude where the heck is he" stan groaned leaning backwards on his seat. then they heard small pants
they looked at each other in somewhat shocked "are they doing what i think their doing?" craig said and peeked thinking it was some perv doing nasty shit but it was his dear friend making out with his girlfriend "clyde?" stan called out and you two jumped staring at the other two, stan looked annoyed and sighed loudly "just say yr jealous stan" clyde winked tilting his head to stan "celebrations can wait, coach needs you" craig said and went down pulling him by his clothing basically dragging him "call me babe!" you laughed lightly knowing if you dont call he'd show up infront of your house
tolkien
you loved this moment right here, you and tolkien making out without a care in the world. it started with him asking you to come over, thinking he wanted to play games or something but when you arrived he wasn't there, checking every corner still no tolkien. then you checked the backyard and there he was in a suit standing while holding flowers and behind him a table for two people.
you laughed at the sudden surprise, him coming to you grabbed your hand and kissed it "mlady" you laughed again at the fancy name he gave you. walking to the table "if i knew we were having a dinner date I would've worn something more fancy" , he wanted to go somewhere more fancy but this town is far from fancy so he resorted to the next best thing. he pulled your chair and you sat while he slowly pushed it.
it was the cutest thing ever, you two had a nice time and before you know it you two were making out , it was so romantic his kisses were delicate. he held your waist gently and the other holding your back so you don't fall over from him leaning you downwards trying to be romantic, your hands held his face not breaking the contact. he holds you so dear and making out with him makes you feel like you two are a married couple growing old tgt
but before you could feed onto your delusions even more, you could hear a familiar voice calling out on tolkiens voice, it was his mom and dad. you both quickly broke the kiss and greeted them, tolkien said they weren't gonna come home until tmr but they stopped by to grab something and you thought you were going to be bribed 10 million dollars to break up with him but you saw them converse with smiles on their face.
leaving the house with a "invite her for dinner next time sweetie" you blushed a little "now where did we left off?" he said and pulled you for another kiss
tweek
boy oh boy does he look stressed rn, he is a cash register, waiter and the one making the coffee at the same time . every minute his twitching worsened, you laughed at how cute he was from the glass door, entering with a ding caused by the bell, tweek shouted "welcome to t-tweek bros!" from the counter while making coffee and when he saw who came he smiled so brightly
keeping professional and trying his best to not hug you tightly while crying about the shitty customers he just smiled while waiting for you to order. "just a water babe, dont wanna stress you out more" you smiled and he smiled back making the water and giving it to your table "how long til your shift ends?" you question while drinking your water "ngghh five minutes!" you hummed at the answer and he walked away
his shift finally ended so now here you two were making out in the break rooms, it was suppose to be him complaining abt the customers today but i guess he had other plans, it was sloppy, it seem as though he didnt even want to kiss you. you smiled at how rushed he was and pulled away, your current position is being pinned onto his locker while he cups your face, your hand on his shoulders pushing him. he looked slightly confused on why you pushed him but you flipped him over so he was pinned against the locker you being shorter grabbed his face and tip toeing to kiss him and he just hold your waist not knowing were else to place his hands
when it seemed like it was getting steady and he wasn't twitching as much the doors opened with a bitchy voice followed "tweek your shift ended right? lets pl- the fuck" tweek jumped at the sudden intrusion " argh! this isn't what it looks like! i mean it is! i mean!" you placed your hand on his shoulders and the rest of the boys walked in "damn tweek i didn't know you were kinky like that" kenny said making the others laugh "shut up!" tweek said as you all walked out, they continued to tease tweek abt this for a couple of days (by they i mean cartman and sometimes jimmy) until you forced them to stop, tweek always kiss at home now, specifically your house, hes too nervous someone will disturb you two.
craig
you dont know how it lead to this but uh here you two are in his kitchen making out... i know how though. you came over to hang out with him......maybe you shouldve come a little later bc rn red racer is on and he refuses to talk to you until after red racer is over. that show is sooooooooo boring to you, you can't say that though.
and damn how long is this show on?? its been 20 minutes now and you two are halfway through the episode. attempting to talk to him again he shushes you and says "wait until red racer is over" for the 100th time you sigh knowing you have to wait even though craig knew impatience is one of your strong personalities.
you decide to go to the kitchen to relieve your thrist, opening the fridge literally eyeing it for a drink and opening and closing it hoping a drink will appear. finally you see water right infront of your fucking eyes, you drink some then put it back, closing the fridge and when your about to turn around someone hugged you. the smell of the cologne was easy to identify, craigs dad.
jk its craig , he wouldn't let go even if you tried, "craig." you said sternly in defeat "sorry, red racer is over now what did you want to talk about?" laying his head in your shoulder, his breath on your neck. you sighed and just when you were about to run he flipped you over to the counter, he picked you up by your thighs and placed you on the counter his hand trapping you in "my parents aren't coming home for awhile" he winked "so?" you said in confusion and he just kissed you so yeah now you two are making out
his kisses was lovingly, and sensual... although he doesn't seem experienced he's good at kissing, you put your hand on his shoulders and his hands now on you waist one of them travelling further down to your thigh. as you two were enjoying the moment the door opened, quietly though. you two of course didn't hear it and kept making out and you hear something drop. you two looked over at the door to see almost every boy in the 4thgrade (the relevant ones ofc) butters has dropped his book and was in shock he ran home muttering smthn abt we can only kiss after marriage.
everyone just stood there staring at each other "so are you js gonna stand there?" craig broke the silence "do you want us to come to you then?" cartman said in a sarcastic tone which made craig flip him off "leave" and they left, wow. "isn't that too rude? poor them" you said pitifully looking back at the door. "forget them, your focus is me, where were we hm?" he said as his hands gently pulled you to look in his direction.

Hey!! If you don't mind, Can you do Tolkien, Clyde, and Kyle with a reader who loves to garden and makes flower crowns for their s/o? If you've already done that, then Tolkien, Clyde, and Kyle with a reader who rambles about something they're fixated on without realizing it?
It would be great if you did my request<3!(I have been reading your work for quite some time now and I love your work sm!!)
Token, Clyde, and Kyle with a s/o who likes to make flower crowns💐💐💐💖
Warnings: None
Gender: Neutral
Tumblr media
💜 Token Black 💰
Tumblr media
He knew that you loved gardening, but he never knew that you also make flower crowns until you gave one to him as a gift.
Gotta say, his face is completely red when you put the flower crown onto his head. It's not often you see people being really generous with him and you're just making his day better.
He would also love to make flower crowns with you, his love language is also quality time with the people he really cares about so he wants to spend as much time with you.
Him wearing the flower crown might lead to him getting teased by his friends, but he doesn't pay attention to them and just enjoy the wonderful gift that was given to him by his s/o.
His parents are head-heels over you. They love how you make their son so happy after he spends time with you. You also even have his parents flower crowns as well and they appreciate the gift.
Overall, Token loves your flower crowns!💜💜💜
❤️ Clyde Donovan 🌮
Tumblr media
He will probably brag to everyone no matter what gift he gets from his s/o. But we all know that he is a blushing mess whenever he receives gifts like a flower crown from you.
If he wears that flower crown at school he will be so embarrassed about it, but he will continue to wear it just to make you happy.
If you offer to teach him how to make flower crowns, he will hesitate at first but accepts the offer anyways.
After some time, it seems like Clyde has found something to help him pass his free time and boredom, making flower crowns!
You even see some flower crowns hanging on his wall in his bedroom. (Wow, I guess he really enjoys this a lot)
This boy could careless what others think of him, he's still the same old Clyde except he's now into making flower crowns with you!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
💚 Kyle Broflovski 💐
Tumblr media
Gotta admit, Kyle finds it really cute that you like to make flower crowns, let alone offering one to him.
He would rather not wear one on his head, but he wouldn't mind wearing ones on his neck or wrist.
He will help you make flower crowns as well, but he probably might not be very good at all and his end up looking wonky- he's still trying his best!
He would also be amazed at how well done and organized your garden is if you show it to him. Looking at all those flowers, plants, fruits, etc. That you grew makes Kyle want to stare at your garden all day tbh.
If you actually do manage to get him to wear a flower crown on his head, he would've had to take off his hat in order to wear and he doesn't like that.
*Kyle groans at the fact of his hair showing out while he wears the flower crown*
"Aw come on Kyle, you don't have to take off your hat to wear you silly goose!".
"Hmmph!", Kyle turned away from you with his cheeks being red.
"Angy boi", You giggled at him before pulling him into a warm hug.💚💚💚💚💚💚

More Reading Thoughts: A Shortcut to Mushrooms
"[Frodo] was lying in a bower made by a living tree with branches laced and drooping to the ground; his bed was of fern and grass, deep and soft and strangely fragrant. The sun was shining through the fluttering leaves, which were still green upon the tree." HELLO I WANT A BED LIKE THIS HOLY COW
LOL Pippin like "I would've eaten all the bread and not saved any for you if Sam didn't stop me" 🤣
"I don't want to answer a string of questions while I am eating. I want to think!" "Good heavens! At breakfast?" Have I mentioned that I love Frodo and Pippin—
Frodo sees his kid cousin running in the grass and singing and thinks to himself "🥺 oh I can't possibly take him and Sam into danger with me, look at them"
I love Frodo's entire conversation with Sam here. If I tried to list my favorite lines, I'd be copying the whole thing. Frodo doesn't want to put Sam in danger, because he loves him, but Sam is extremely loyal and willing to walk into hellfire for Frodo, because he loves him. It's just such a sweet exchange that tells you so much about these characters. I'm love them boys.
Also Frodo being surprised that Sam's become so philosophical haha
Frodo: "We'd best get going; we slept late." Pippin: "You mean you slept late." HAVE I MENTIONED—
Frodo: "I'm not going to take the road. I'll cut straight across country to the Ferry." Pippin: "What, can you fly??"
Pippin: "Short cuts make long delays! Besides, I was hoping to stop at the inn for some good beer." Frodo: "Well, that settles it! Short cuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones."
Also Sam stalwartly like "I'll go with you, Mr. Frodo," but also inwardly like ":-C but the beer tho"
And now we return to another hiking section, about which I have very little to say except that Tolkien's description of the natural environments of the Shire is extremely beautiful and I too would want to hike there
And now we interrupt your regularly scheduled pleasant hike for some bone-chilling horror
It's hard to imagine in the modern age—when tornado sirens and jet planes and faulty car brakes all probably make noises not unlike that of a Ringwraith's call—but to hobbits who have never heard a noise louder or more frightening than a thunderclap, a high, sustained, almost industrial screech like this must seem like the most terrifying and otherworldly thing.
(Also nobody tell Pippin about the white bellbird, which has a call like the emergency alert system at a volume comparable to a pneumatic drill)
Pippin: "Oh good, it's Farmer Maggot :-D" Frodo: "OH NO IT'S FARMER MAGGOT D-8"
It's such a shame that we know so little of Frodo's childhood, but the fact that he was a Certified Scoundrel(TM) who was prone to stealing mushrooms and got his butt whooped over it is absolutely hilarious 🤣 How ever did a naughty kid like him become the erudite sweetheart we know and love??
Pippin like "chill bro, he's a mutual friend of mine and Merry's, we're good!" Meanwhile Frodo is sweating buckets LOL
It's so cool that Pippin gets to be the leader in this section. And what a fearless leader he is! Of course he's not in any danger at all, but it just says so much about him that he waltzes down the lane to Farmer Maggot's house without a care in the world while Frodo and Sam are both terrified 🤣
Also I adore Farmer Maggot's hospitality
Sam giving Farmer Maggot the side eye because he whooped Frodo over the mushrooms years ago X-D
"I recollect the time when young Frodo Baggins was one of the worst young rascals of Buckland." I MEAN JUST IMAGINE
Farmer Maggot's story about the Ringwraith is SO GOOD. I love how much courage this round old hobbit has in him.
Farmer Maggot: "Moral of the story, ya never should've gone to Hobbiton. Clearly ya got mixed up with weird people." Sam: >:-C
Also Farmer Maggot cheerfully being like "don't worry, if they come after ya again, I'll deal with 'em for ya!" is so sweet and so ballsy X-D
Also Farmer Maggot is SO FREAKING SMART, and so generous. I think it's Merry who says later that he's got a lot more going on in his head than his genial appearance might let on, and he's right. He can see that Frodo and co. are in trouble, and he immediately offers his help. What a solid dude.
And here we see Frodo's silver tongue at work once again!
"I've been in terror of you and your dogs for over thirty years... It's a pity: for I've missed a good friend."
This line actually made me stop and think, bruh. How many friendships do we miss out on because we let the mistakes of our younger selves dictate our future?? I can think of lots of dumb things I did as a kid, and I'd be so embarrassed to run into the people that I wronged in my stupidity...but who knows? Maybe they're good people. Maybe they'd even be my best friends, if I got over myself. Food for thought.
And speaking of food, I want to have dinner with Farmer Maggot and his family and farm hands X-D
Ohhhh the suspense of the hoof-falls in the foggy lane is SOOO GOOD
WHO'S THAT POKEMON??
IT'S MERRY BRANDYBUCK!!
And his humor is in absolute top form LOLOL
"When it grew foggy I came across and rode up towards Stock to see if you had fallen in any ditches. ... Where did you find them, Mr. Maggot? In your duck-pond?"
HAVE I MENTIONED THAT MERRY IS MY FAVORITE HOBBIT
Also, the fact that Mrs. Maggot packed a basket of mushrooms for Frodo makes me very happy X-D

I know you have kind of commented on this topic in one of your posts, but what do you think of the fact that Tolkien hated Disney and thought of Walt as a "con-artist" (if I remember correctly) because of how much would be changed? Even though I very much love Disney movies, considering how Tolkien studied mythology, folklore and history from other cultures in-depth, particularly those of European background, I do understand why he was not fond Walt's work at all if we view it from his perspective. Other people seem to share a similar sentiment. I ask you because you often analyze Disney movies and their themes quite in-depth. This whole thing is interesting.
Well, I'll preface by saying I'm not much of a Tolkien apologist. I don't connect with him or his mentality as well as I might flatter myself by saying I do C.S. Lewis' mentality. C. S. Lewis had this beautiful way of blending genuine good-faith enjoyment of something and careful, intentional critical thinking. He could be a reasonable analyzer of media, and a childlike consumer of media, at the same time. Don't know if I've mastered that myself, or if I ever will, but I really admire it.
Which is besides the point, sorry! 😂
But Tolkien was different. First off, Tolkien said some things about interpreting the meaning of his own stories that I don't agree with. He keeps insisting he wasn't trying to "say" anything with Lord of the Rings, or infuse it with any particular "meaning." Truth of the matter is, though, that is not true of any good storyteller. What they believe about the world bleeds into what they create, if they're creating genuinely. So Lord of the Rings is about how small decisions matter, doing what you can with what you're given instead of trying to control everything matters—whether Tolkien likes it or not, whether he was always conscious of it or not, that's what his story says.
He also criticized weird things to criticize about Lewis' works. For someone who was Lewis' friend, I don't know how he could've looked at what Lewis was writing and been surprised, or disgruntled, at the hodgepodge of mythology in works like Narnia. I don't know what made him think a "children's story" would feel like anything other than...made for children.
But anyway. All that to say, I don't always agree with Tolkien, or feel like I understand him. His response to Disney movies is just one of those things I don't get. I can speculate, but I don't know.
Like I said, I think he was so used to thinking of fairy tales and literature in a way that is much...higher, and more layered, than how the everyday layman thought of them, that when a Kansas cartoonist started retelling fairytales without any apparent grasp of that layering, it really rubbed him the wrong way.
I guess it would be like if someone came along twenty years from now, pointed at Disney's The Little Mermaid, and said, "look! A cartoon about fish! I'm going to make an TikTok dance about fish and call it 'The Little Mermaid,' and retell it that way!"
First of all we'd be like "IT'S ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN FISH, it's not just an CARTOON, are you BLIND?!" And then secondly we'd probably go, "and what? A TikTok dance?! Are you kidding me? You want to take this beautiful pillar of traditional animation and living color and musical mastery and drag it down to the level of middle school girls flapping their hands around cringily??"
That's probably how Tolkien felt Disney was treating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Because back then, the medium (TikTok dances, animation) was just associated with sort of lowbrow humor and silliness. Walt was still inventing the whole "animated film to be taken seriously" thing. And back then, Tolkien would've seen the comedy characters of the Dwarfs and their character development as very shallow in comparison to the mythos of Dwarfs in literary and oral-tradition history. He had the most background knowledge. So what he was comparing Walt's movies to was, for him, like comparing grape Gatorade to aged Italian Wine.
As far as Disney being a "con artist..." yeah, I think that's a little bit of a stretch. He was definitely selling something, but if you can look at Walt Disney's life and see dollar bill signs, instead of a guy who genuinely made what he liked because he liked it, you don't know much about Walt Disney. He didn't adapt fairy tales because he thought they could make him money. He adapted fairy tales because he adored them, just like he had a train in his backyard because he adored them. Ask his brother Roy how much Walter "Let's Invent Smell-O-Vision and Drop Flowers on the Audience of Fantasia" Disney was thinking about exploiting the public for financial gain.
Like I said, Tolkien was responding to Walt Disney because he was Tolkien, and it would've been like asking a Bird to relate to a Krill. They were way too different to ever understand each other on the level that either of them preferred being understood at.

i know there's some people out there who think that silvergifting, specifically sauron falling in love with celebrimbor, is out of character for him. i'm gonna rant about that a little and talk about why it's not true.
we are told sauron didn't start out as evil. tolkien doesn't believe in inherent evil. and there is something human about sauron, in how much of a perfectionist he is, the way that he grew frustrated with all of the disorder in the world. these were things that he couldn't control, supposedly- but what if he could? he never would've been satisfied just working for aulë, not when all of the imperfections he saw became an obsession for him. and here comes melkor, giving him all of the power he wants to make that dream a reality for him. sauron is said to have "adored" melkor.
these are actual human feelings that real people experience. i have autism, ADHD, OCD, bipolar disorder and multiple anxiety disorders and a lot of the feelings sauron experiences about perfectionism, wanting to have control over things you just can't- these are feelings i deal with every single day!! it's just that sauron, being 1.) one of the ainur and 2.) a villain, takes these feelings to such an extreme that it warps him, and it shows how damaging you can be to yourself if you don't have a good support system, if you don't have people in place who genuinely want to help you and understand you. it's pretty clear to me that sauron is capable of experiencing human emotions, so by extension he is absolutely capable of love.
with these things in mind, it is PERFECTLY in-character for sauron to not only fall in love with celebrimbor but also to feel guilty about torturing and killing him. because celebrimbor is just another one of those things that he can't control, but he loves him. even if he wanted to just be annatar, he couldn't- celebrimbor would find out the truth eventually, and most likely reject him. and he couldn't just abandon all of those plans he sacrificed everything for. he left aulë and betrayed him, left melkor behind after so many years serving him, everything was building up to this moment. sauron was too transformed by all of his experiences and to just give up on everything would be giving up on who he had become. melkor became a part of him. but celebrimbor did too, and that's why it hurts so much. sauron is literally killing off a part of himself when he kills celebrimbor- the part of him that could've become annatar. it's fascinating to think about, what could drive someone to kill the person they love, and even more interesting when it's someone with as much potential for character exploration as sauron.
the rings of power would not have been made without celebrimbor. annatar and celebrimbor worked together in close partnership for 300 years, and the act of subcreation is said to be intimate. celebrimbor is part of the story of the one ring, and there's something special about celebrimbor and sauron's relationship, so much potential to be explored, even if you don't ship them romantically. i'm so tired of people shutting down the possibility of sauron experiencing love and being emotionally vulnerable just because "he's evil". tolkien didn't write a whole essay on sauron's motivations and complexities only for them to be dismissed like that. let's embrace the nuances in tolkien's villains instead of ignoring them.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 1
Tar-Míriel vs Eöl
Tar-Míriel:
The last queen of Númenor, who was forcibly married by her cousin Ar-Pharazôn.
RIGHTFUL QUEEN OF NUMENOR her throne was STOLEN from her and I may have constructed an entire personality for her based mostly on the lacunae where she is NOT described but it's canon-supported, okay! Like - she didn't support Pharazon, she didn't support Sauron, but she didn't ever act on that in any way major enough to make it into the narrative! It's just in the very last possible minute that she does something, trying to climb the Meneltarma to get to the sacred place at the top - and the Meneltarma I'm pretty sure was erupting at the time? So this isn't her trying to get to safety, this is her trying to make it to the holy place before the wave catches her. But it's too late and she's carried off. And I read SO much into that, that the phrasing is specifically "too late she strove to ascend the steep ways of the Meneltarma to the holy place" - I read it as a metaphor for her entire queenship, how she WANTED to oppose Sauron and Pharazon, but their power was overwhelming and she couldn't see a way to succeed. So she waited, and waited, and waited, and watched for an opportunity that never came, and who knows what would have happened if she'd just thrown aside caution and acted? Maybe she would've been killed, and her supporters with her. Probably that's what would have happened. But maybe not! And she will never, never know, because the time slipped by with waiting until suddenly the earth was shaking and the sea was surging over the land, and there was no more time.
Eöl:
Called the Dark Elf. Husband of Aredhel, whom he later killed, and father of Maeglin.
listen i know we’re all mad abt aredhel but eöl makes Some Points abt turgon’s claims of kingship/authority in beleriand and the fact that it’s a Pretty Shitty Move of turgon to be like “welcome to hotel gondolin, you can never leave, so live here or die here, it’s your choice” bc what kind of choice is that at all. the only guy in the silm who’s like “hey by what token do you claim your authority anyway” who Isn’t just trying to maintain their Own claim to kingship. a vote for the dark-elf of nan elmoth is a vote for anarchy <3

Omg y'all, my husband's family had a tradition growing up that when any of them were sick (which was pretty often, since he's one of seven kids), they would watch the 1977 Rankin/Bass Hobbit movie. Their dad really loves Tolkien but was generally not a fan of letting the kids use The Tech (tm), so I think this is the compromise the older kids wrangled from him
I have heard about this movie from him and his siblings, but didn't really know anything about it myself since my parents weren't super into Tolkien, so I got into it with the PJ LOTR movies
ANYWAY so we've been sick all week and James found out that movie's on HBO, so he sat me down and made me watch it as a Time Honored Tradition
And I.
Tumblr media
Bilbo has approximated Leia buns??? I spent an hour and seventeen minutes looking at him, but still have not figured out what is going on with this guy's hair
Tumblr media
They really leaned hard into "there's thorin and uhhhhhhhhhh twelve other dwarves idk their names don't matter." The only ones I could keep straight were fili and kili, since they were blond, and balin and dwalin, because they have like, six-heads and brain wrinkles on their head lol
Tumblr media
James always described Gollum in this movie as a booger, and now I understand why. They also made him blind, which doesn't make a ton of sense in the context of Bilbo using the ring to escape, but imo it's a neat design choice nonetheless
Tumblr media
They really did THIS to thranduil oropherion I am still laughing my ASS off at this. He also spoke with a really shitty, half assed French accent for no discernable reason
Tumblr media
And then there was? Smaug??? Who has laser beams for eyes?? And fur on his back?? And a tiger's face???? And pecs????????
I was too flabbergasted to remember to take more pictures but the conversation right before the battle went like this:
Thorin, Bard, and Thranduil: let's fuck these guys up!!
Gandalf: STOP you fools!!! As we speak there is a FOURTH army of goblins on its way here!!!
Thorin, Bard, and Thranduil:
Thorin: King Thranduil, my dearest friend and greatest ally, I would be honored to join forces with you to defeat this evil
Thranduil: oh mighty king thorin, it would be an honor [I wish I was making this up, if it weren't made in the 70s I would've thought it was a meme]
Also, at the end, bombur shows up in front of Bilbo only to keel over and die, before we cut to Bilbo's conversation with gandalf:
Bilbo: how many of our original thirteen remain??
Gandalf: seven :(
Bilbo: and thorin??
Gandalf: soon, it will be six :((((
No explanation for this or like, explanation of who else they arbitrarily killed off or anything
So anyway, this movie was An Experience (tm) and I wanted to share and also, y'all should watch it if you get the chance bc lol

Why is Tolkien so charitable regarding Frodo's missteps? After all, Tolkien conveniently and entirely blames all of Frodo's missteps regarding his handling of the ring on the ring itself.  "I do not think Frodo's was a moral failure. At the last moment the pressure of the Ring would reach its maximum -- impossible, I should have said, for anyone to resist."- JRR Tolkien. One can't imagine him saying anything remotely like this about the others who tried to take the ring. It's only Frodo's actions that Tolkien excuses by saying that anyone in Frodo's position would have done the same thing.
"One can't imagine him saying anything remotely like this about the others who tried to take the ring."
Hmm, and why not? I think it's hard to speculate on what Tolkien would've said about any other character if they were in Frodo's place, charged with Frodo's specific task.
We also do not know how any other character in Frodo's shoes would have acted; we can only speculate.
What we do know, however, is that of the people who took the Ring or tried to, Frodo and Sam were the only ones who took it without the initial desire to use it to achieve some personal goal (including the goal to simply have it, without even knowing what it was. Examples here are Isildur, Gollum, and Bilbo, who also called the Ring "my precious," which Frodo notably never did, and which I interpret to mean that he never coveted the Ring like Bilbo did).
Sam and Frodo took the Ring in order to conduct it to Mount Doom and destroy it. Arguably, Frodo's intentions at the Council of Elrond were that and only that -- if things changed later, that speaks to the time he interacted closely with the Ring and the proximity to Mordor. Sam also took up the Ring only because he wanted to carry on Frodo's mission, but he only carried it for one or two days, so we don't know what would've happened if he continued to be the Ringbearer.
However, the original intention, the lack of ulterior motive in taking the Ring, and the sheer length of time that Frodo spent resisting the Ring while at the height of its power (both in terms of time and place) are all important, and if there's an answer to your question, this is it.
Also, really, no need for the large font, lol. I can see just fine. :)

so, Greenwood cats.
(hear me out, hear me out)
Norwegian Forest Cats:
larger and more powerful than most domesticated housecats, they're adapted to colder climates, with very thick and long fur. they take 5 years to fully mature. as the name implies, before domestication they occupied Scandinavian forests
Ocelots:
on all fours adults come up to a human's knees. historically, they were sometimes kept as pets by Aztecs and Incans. they take 2 years to fully mature. they're active at twilight and night, and live solitary. they require dense foliage cover, which often means forests
etymology:
while The Hobbit's Mirkwood is not the only instance of the name, Tolkien has admitted its roots to be in early German, Old English, Old Swedish and Old Norse
the Old Norse word for a domestic cat (tom-cat specifically, but isn't it always) is köttr. in terms of lotr-invented animals, Warg is drawn directly from the Old Norse word for wolf, vargr
(side-note: Teldivo was a giant black cat in Tolkien's early development of lotr, later replaced by Sauron, so the idea of Big Version of Real Animal wasn't lost on him)
and what does this all amount to, you ask?
well, that quite neatly for a fantasy world, Greenwood's forests could feasibly be inhabited by large wild-cats known as Kottur.
(as decided by the author of this post, who has a frightenly loose concept of deriving words from others lol)
and with that said, here's a fun fact about Norse tradition: cats were often given as wedding gifts to brides. this was done to honour Freyja, the goddess of love and fertility, whose chariot was pulled by... Norwegian Forest Cats! who would've guessed
also want to add that -- as i've said before but a while ago -- i don't put much stock in elves marrying. they just... live too long for that kind of monogamous commitment. 'til death do us part' doesn't really carry much weight, does it? however, i am willing to say that some elves choose to 'bond' with one another, sort of entertwining their lives without the rather daunting promise of a singular eternity. and yes, polyamoury and divorce. again, they live too damn long for the expectation of one partner in an entire population to be sensical
so to bring this together, here's my concept:
newly bonded Greenwood elves sometimes gift their partners a Kottur kitten, not to be luxuriously treasured pets but to act as hunting companions and protectors. considering Silvans' deep bond with nature, it's plausible, no?
(kittens only, because once Kottur start hitting maturity it becomes nigh impossible to train them)

There's no such future, Sauron!
One of Rings of Power’s great achievements is the layered characterisation of Sauron that perfectly fits with Tolkien’s backstory for him. It’s essentially a tragedy and I get the empathetic perspective on Sauron, but I need to understand how he becomes this evil entity in Lord of the Rings.
So, this is how it ends between Galadriel and Halbrand: she tries to stab Sauron twice and Sauron doesn’t really care. He just doesn’t. He’s a Maia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he also reveals himself as having a pretty short fuse. He’s irascible, feral, unhinged when things don’t work out according to his clever plans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You better not tickle his frail ego or he’ll give you a scare for life. If he likes you, it’s only in your mind, and you wake up just in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I love how Galadriel totally would've stabbed him a third time though she just experienced the futilitiy of it.)
Sauron’s proposal was a mess, and it was a perfect introduction to all that isn’t okay with him:
First of all, it was cruel to use her memory of Finrod, which was a special one, and infantilize Galadriel as a means to his ends. He knows exactly what he’s doing in this situation, while she’s just massively confused, like, completely disoriented. In the forge in Númenor Halbrand said he was sorry about her brother, with teary eyes and all, but now he’s not caring about her grieve anymore. Instead he uses it, because all that interests him is that the Rings are forged. He wants the Rings.
He killed Finrod, did he really think this was going to go over well with Galadriel when he impersonates and completely misrepresents him? For all his wisecracking about diplomacy and human nature in Númenor earlier, he’s really naive or just arrogant to think this warms her heart for him, or maybe he just doesn’t care if it does.
Tumblr media
Then he switches scenery. They’re on the raft and he makes his proposal. Galadriel’s tempted because he looks like the Halbrand again who saved her and she’s into him, but the situation is still scary. She’s got no agency here, except maybe to say ‘yes’. The power balance has shifted. Or rather, balance has evaporated. She’s at his mercy. He’s using his magic powers on her, she didn’t know he had, because until recently this was just moody human Halbrand who can do sword tricks.
The proposal - well, Galadriel owns an impressive dagger she can’t use against him; Sauron however stabs her with words and thoughts which is ultimately more harmful. All he knows about her vulnerabilities, he now uses to corner her, to coax her, to make her alloy with him. It effectively disarms her.
She rejects him - or in the metaphysics of ring-forging: her light rejects to alloy with him because his intentions aren’t pure enough - and just like that volatile Sauron emerges. He doubles down on the humiliating rhetoric, he gets worked up really fast. There’s a monstrous transformation going on with his voice and eyes, so finally, he also looks like the fucker who killed the people she loved and so many more, so she attacks him. It’s useless, but she can’t help it. So he plunges her under water and lets her sink.
Sauron’s reaction is purely emotional, he’s getting carried away, he’s like an ancient emo-kid acting out. But that’s foreboding. He could’ve acted differently even though she attacked him with the dagger. It was clear she wouldn’t be able to stab him. He was in control. He’s much more powerful than her and this was just unnecessary and sadistic to make her think she’s drowning.
You don’t do that to someone you fancy, do you? Make them helpless and scared for their life. There’s something so demeaning in this.
If this is his reaction because she doesn’t immediately grasp he’s a good guy now, then he’s got a long way to go yet. Just for that drowning experience alone, I would totally switch into vengeful dark Galadriel mode from the PJ movies too, if I met him next time. I really want her to go hard on him and pay him back.
Tumblr media
Had he acted differently, would she then have accepted his proposal? He didn’t quite recommend himself as a reliable, genuine fellow, just an imitation of one, so how …?
On the other hand, I think Sauron is infatuated with her and he knows she reciprocated his feelings when he was still Halbrand. He won’t stop trying to bring her to his side and make it as hard for her as possible to be at peace:
Look at me Galadriel! Look at what I’ve done, this is all your fault! I massacre all those people, because you didn’t love me enough.
But it isn’t her fault, it’s his. He’s suspicious for the sole reason that he could’ve gone the way of full rehabilitation. As a Maia in Middle-earth he falls under the jurisidiction of the Valar, but he evades their judgment, and then can’t seem to bear Galadriel’s rejection either - just because she can’t immediately stop being a victim of his past dark doings …
If he’s a gift maker, he reveals himself here as one of those who take their gift back when they aren’t pleased with the recipient. Thus he let’s her drown this time. Nearly. Long way to go for Sauron.
She could become his personal life coach, sure, but there’s a possibility for her and people close to her of getting hurt and/or killed along the way because he’s a fragile toddler inside though being older than sound.
Even if he was a victim himself (of Morgoth), what difference does it make to Galadriel, or Finrod? Heck, even the Orcs he mutilated who were his dependents? Mutilated, traumatized, dead. He’s asking way too much of her in this moment, to forgive and reconcile at the same time, while he himself has dodged the chance to be held accountable and face punishment for the atrocities he’s done, because he fears he’ll be tested for a long time by the gods and it will be a bore.
From the Silmarillion: When Thangorodrim was broken and Morgoth overthrown, Sauron put on his fair hue again and did obeisance to Eönwë, the herald of Manwë, and abjured all his evil deeds. And some hold that this was not at first falsely done, but that Sauron in truth repented, if only out of fear, being dismayed by the fall of Morgoth and the great wrath of the Lords of the West. But it was not within the power of Eönwë to pardon those of his own order, and he commanded Sauron to return to Aman and there receive the judgement of Manwë. Then Sauron was ashamed, and he was unwilling to return in humiliation and to receive from the Valar a sentence, it might be, of long servitude in proof of his good faith; for under Morgoth his power had been great. Therefore when Eönwë departed he hid himself in Middle-earth; and he fell back into evil, for the bonds that Morgoth had laid upon him were very strong.
Sauron will possibly renew his proposal to Galadriel, but the first time made a bad enough impression. His methods of persuasion sucked. I’d love if this was Pride and Prejudice in Middle-earth, but Tolkien’s source material doesn’t leave much room for it. It’s not just that the Dark Lord’s manners are unpleasant and he’s a decent guy underneath. He’s described as being just that - unpleasant:
[…] a re-incarnation of Evil, and a thing lusting for Complete Power – and so consumed ever more fiercely with hate (especially of gods and Elves).

Do you think Sauron is actually capable of loving Galadriel? I ship it, but idk if he could really care about her outside of fan fiction, lol!
Hello anon!
First of all, it doesn't matter whether he actually could or couldn't love her in canon because the fun thing about being a fan and all of this being fake is that you get to interpret it however you want (despite what some people will try to tell you)! So, this is just my personal interpretation of Sauron and Galadriel; everyone is free to see it however they want to. I'm going to apologize for the length in advance, because I am as long-winded as a bagpipe player.
I don't think that Sauron actually loves her. At least, not in the way we think of "love" between two people. At this point in his existence, Sauron has done unspeakably evil things for thousands of years, and I feel like he's been twisted beyond the capability of truly loving anyone.
That being said, I think he admires Galadriel a lot; her strength, her determination, her power, her (temporary) bloodlust. He tells her that she pushed him to heights no one else could have, and he will always be grateful for that. I don't think he's lying to her when he says that; she truly inspires him in ways no one else ever has.
Tolkien even said that when Sauron first encountered her, he knew he'd met his match. That definitely rings true in the show; even more so than in the book material in my opinion. Galadriel is his exact opposite in the light; they're able to understand each other and connect with each other in ways they can't with anyone else. That's what makes them so fascinating!
To me, Sauron seemed pretty upset and even genuinely hurt that she didn't want to join him because of that deep connection that they have. I don't think he ever lied to her or was even really trying to manipulate her until he faked his injury to get to the elves. A lot of people get annoyed that Galadriel didn't sense that he wasn't being genuine like she did in the book material, but I think it's because he was being genuine for the first 7 episodes. As soon as Galadriel sensed he was being fake in Eregion, she acted on it and started looking into the royal family of the Southlands. Before that, she completely believed that he wasn't her enemy because he wasn't; he wasn't the version of Sauron she's been searching for all these years.
However, he is still narcissistic, power-hungry, sadistic, and manipulative or he would've chosen to follow her back into the light instead of plunge headfirst back into darkness. She definitely amuses him, inspires him, and he has great respect for her; he could even have affection for her. But loving her would mean putting her above his own ambitions, his powers, his interests, his needs and wants. As Mairon he could've done this, but never as Sauron. And when he took up the king's pouch again before heading back to Middle-Earth, Sauron is the identity he was choosing.
Galadriel would be his Queen in title alone; I think she'd probably be the head of his armies, similar to the way he used to serve Morgoth. But she would always be subservient to him and his personal desires.
I think one of his attributes is possessiveness, so I'm sure a large part of his anger in episode 8 came from wanting to own her and have all of her attention and loyalty to himself. That on top of the last sliver of Mairon dying in him as his only positive relationship in the last few millennia was sundered.
Both Sauron and Galadriel are at the lowest points of their lives when they meet on the raft, and they inspire each other to take their respective paths that lead them to becoming the iconic entities they are in the Third Age. I absolutely LOVE that! I love that in her darkest moment, Galadriel's worst enemy is the one to give her a semblance of hope again. I love that when Sauron was feeling completely powerless, the woman that vowed to destroy him was the one to build him up again (even if it's ultimately to her own detriment).
Their dynamic is INCREDIBLE and HEARTBREAKING and COSMIC and I am 100% here for it.

D&D is good at the kind of fantasy stories that have old and faded, hand painted covers with the hyper realistic style of art on them.
Epic fantasy with extremely archetypal heroes, where players are larger than life distillations of details into tropes.
So I think it makes sense that people who play DnD are hesitant to try much else.
Other games don't deliver what they're looking for, the designs are fundamentally different.
I think that as indie or just non-wotc designers, we might be reaching out to the wrong demographic. Because the kids I knew when I was still flesh, and even millennials (who were all adults to me at the time); they were constantly building their own games in order to RP.
I only knew what DnD thanks to my mom, because she was a huge Tolkien fan and desperately wanted to play but, (christianity) said no. But the first ttRPG I read was in the back of a Yu-Gi-Oh manga that used (an apparently very) simplified version of THAC0, and the first I ever played was Pathfinder. But I only played it twice.
The rpgs I played, that weren't on a PlayStation, were writing RPs. Made up stuff my friends and I pulled together; that wouldn't work in DnD for various reasons, and a massive RP on a single dying forum.
The game was only still going because the 28/30+ year olds that ran it had been writing together since they were kids. I assumed that was an outlier until I started talking to more weeb elders, comic con vets, survivors of the "yaoi paddle," and the kids they raised and made chill spaces for. But they've been making and playing games besides DnD forever, and from what I could see, would've had a lotta fun with systems that fit the games they were actually trying to play.
