after stumbling across the treasure trove that is thunder1408 vods from november onwards i will now say that jack has the best pov of november 16th. call me biased but his pov is truly something special. not only in the sense that its fucking hilarious (seriously its so entertaining) but also how much it sets up later parts of his character. for real, other than the glitch that made him fall through the floor that gave us 'jack manifold goes to hell', jacks 2 month break from streaming is the most important thing to happen to his character. because hes been gone for months, throughout the entirety that manberg has existed, hes been left in the dust by absolutely everyone. he has no side to choose because he was never there to get an idea on what each side stands for. the entire stream creates such a weird feeling of solitude i dont know how to describe it lmao. two separate times jack simply types "alone....." into chat and thats the best way the stream can be summed up. nearly every person jack talks to either doesnt take him seriously or basically ignores him. the first thing tubbo does when jack comes up to talk to him is shoot him with arrows and then scolds him for being absent. wilbur straight up forgets his existence and later canon kills him. it just shows so well how abandoned and alone jack feels like simply watching that stream i entirely get how his villain arc came about, he just needed to hit a breaking point. im kinda just rambling at this point but wow jacks character has been so consistent for all these months im so glad that jacks hiatus was able to give us what his character is now. if you ever find the time please watch at least the first half of the stream before it crashed (which takes place mostly before the actual battle) its really entertaining and gives a pretty good insight on how his character is before going full cartoon villain

(Just for time- any name I refer in here is all character unless specified!)
Nah, cause I'm convinced that the vault was 100% a set up and there's so much that is just left unexplained that proves that:
The Elevator
The Polished Blackstone room
The Gold/highly lit stand for the discs
The enderportal
The attachments
The Avenger's Endgame bullshit at the end
Ranboo
(1) - I don't know why, but this was one of the bigger ones to annoy the hell out of me as to why it looked so complicated. Dream- as far as I remember- hasn't had that many creations with such complex machinery/redstone engineering. Even more so to the extent of making an elevator that can function going up and down with a platform big enough to fit multiple people on.
(1) - Not only that, but we never even got to see the inner workings of the redstone itself- it may seem like an unnecessary detail, but as far as I'm aware, not many people are able to make redstone this complex in order to properly function as an elevator (in Minecraft terms). Dream just doesn't seem to fit within that category because- again, as far as I'm aware- the most complicated redstone device he's made has been the doomsday one, and even then, it wasn't even that complicated- nowhere near the level enough to make an entire elevator by himself.
(2) - Maybe it's because of the amount of times I've seen Dream login to the server and how infrequent it had been in the past, but I don't see how Dream could mine up so much Polished Blackstone, especially to use in this specific purpose. Dream doesn't even have many structures to his name, even his own base doesn't even have any materials that could suggest he would need extra Blackstone for. If it had been made out of obsidian, I could believe it considering all that material had been used for walls around L'Manburg. (Plus, it's been confirmed by the CCs that creative mode is barely used as is, so this makes mining this much Blackstone/Polished Backstone make even less sense.)
(2) - I feel like this is strongly indicated with how much Ranboo had been supposedly mining at the time and had a ridiculously low durability on his tool set so often, sure he could be mining for something totally unrelated, but if that were the case- why would he be so "unaware" of why his tools are so low to begin with?
(3) - Now this is where the bullshit meter starts kicking higher. Why would Dream display the real discs so proudly and in such a gaudy manner, especially when it functionally served no purpose? Not even the walls he had around L'Manburg or the obsidian grid were as flashy. Gold floors, bright lights, the portraits of the discs side to side by the very clear escape portal™, hell, they were even positioned to be directly in front of the elevator so that Tommy and Tubbo would first notice them and would try to run for them. AND THERE WERE TWO ENDERCHESTS RIGHT NEXT TO THE PORTALS AND THE DISCS.
(3) - What kind of Saturday cartoon evil villain™ leaves such an obvious flaw, even when taking into account that Dream is supposedly a strategist? What kind of strategic mastermind would leave an interdimentional chest that could potentially have back up gear and various other items to assist his enemies out in the open like that especially next to a portal where they could easily escape? Not even Jack Manifold would make such an oversight like that.
(4) - The placements of the portal and where Dream, Tommy, and Tubbo all stopped off at the end of Dream's grandiose speech were all much to convenient/coincidental. It was like it was choreographed so that when Dream was specifically away for the duo, Punz and whoever else would be able to step in and "separate/rescue" the two from the big bad Dream despite the fact that Dream could've easily killed the two if he really wanted to by being near and crit'ing them out.
(4) - Plus, the portal was already lit. Which leads directly to where they would've been. Again, from a strategic standpoint that makes no god damn sense. Why leave an obvious portal out in the open like this so that your enemies could try and come and find the people you're trying to supposedly kill?
(5) - Oh yeah, but the bullshit alarm is blaring. Albeit with a bit of wavering doubt, I thought that the attachments room was the most solid part of the plan, at least, if we're going with the mindset that Dream's ultimate goal was to take control of attachments, force everyone to be friends/unified again, and achieve his ultimate goal of peace and unity on the server. But as I thought more on it, some of the attachments... Don't make sense for Dream to know.
(5) - How did Dream know about someone having an attachment that was bedrock? How did Dream know about Punz's shulker box? (I know Drista gave it to him and cc!Dream was there for that, but canonically it makes no sense.) Why did Dream specifically think that Enderchest was Ranboo's only primary attachment? How did Dream know about Dogchamp despite Purpled and him never properly meeting in canon?
(5) - Sure Dream could've gone snooping around and managed to find out, but some of these attachments he doesn't even properly know of unless he had to walk up to someone and be like: So hey, what are you emotionally attached to that would make you utterly destroyed when it's gone? :D
(6) - How in the ever loving fuck did everyone manage to get there?
(6) - This one is clear that Punz lead the charge on this one, but why did everyone flat out believe him? Beforehand, everyone was deadset on staying back, regardless if it was on Tommy and Tubbo's word. But Punz? Alone? He managed to convince everyone? Even if they had a neutral opinion on Dream, to go with him to the vault to rescue the two? Nobody questioned how he even knew about where the portal to the vault is, or that it even had a portal? Nobody? Not a single soul? Or how nobody even questioned how Punz knew that Dream had taken the two down there and didn't just send them off into their own exile?
(7) - Ranboo rarely ever metas about the lore. Unlike most CCs in the DSMP, cc!Ranboo has a particular way of making sure that chat doesn't spoil him on plot points going on, so I highly doubt he would "accidentally" recite Dream's speech, word for word, bar for bar in a room he hadn't even been in yet. Nor even was there for (it's heavily hinted that Enderwalk was present during the confrontation instead). Plus, although it was confirmed unintentional by the CCs later on, Ranboo and Dream were both staring at each other, and I don't think it was to keep him in place- considering Enderwalk went to go visit Dream as often as he could before his ban and Enderwalk seemed to be on good terms with Dream even before the whole Doomsday Era.
Nah, the whole confrontation makes no sense, even down to the cherrypicking examples of it all. If it somehow gets confirmed that the confrontation wasn't staged and that Dream was somehow this cocky, I won't make a fuss, but I'm not gonna be entirely too thrilled at the idea.
But contrary to popular belief, I don't think Dream did this with only Punz or Enderwalk, I think those three were the main ones to set up this whole thing, but considering the redstone and the attachments that Dream wasn't supposed to know of. I don't know, but something about that screams like there was one other involved, the question is- who would also help Dream like Punz or Enderwalk too?
This one is an old one, but I absolutely agree. The Disc War finale is, with all due respect, either egregious writing with no character continuity in the slightest, or c!Dream faked the whole thing. It's way too suspicious not to be obvious. That's a banger analysis.

Am feeling very good n happy tonight, actually *shimmies* a couple reasons for that, but just wanted to let y'all in the fandom know you're pog. I hope you're all having good times rn. So here's just a few things I wanna say, just cause I'm feeling it:
Techno and philza fans? Actually so pog. Besides the discourse, y'all are the funniest mfs, I swear. And your vibe is just... comforting, in a lot of cases. Very cosy. I don't think I would be able to survive with the amount of cursed (/lh) stuff I see from y'all, but still, appreciate u <3
How funny is it that there's so much analysis in the fandom.... this is a block game. And we're mostly known for long analyses. It's amazing. Geniunely, all the metas are so fucking rad. Some of you are so eloquent,,,
Also the fking... poems?? And art??? God, it makes me feel emotion like no other. Really, just... so much. And the fics. There's many talented people in this fandom, and I think there's a certain kind of creativity in it that I don't think matches any other fandom in it's vibe. And I can't explain it rn cause ngl, it is night, but.... Very cool 👍
Fuck, Wilbur's character.... how fucking many sides to him there are...... and Tommy's character. And Sam's. And Ranboo's. And Puffy's. And Dream's. And Foolish's. And everyone's. I am holding it gently and putting it under a microscope to dissect........
I love how this fandom has reinvoked my love for minecraft in a whole new way :> of course, I loved it before, and I was into min/eblr before I got into mcyt specifically, but the things that mcyt has introduced to it... Like popularizing the origins mod, and roleplay, and servers more, and just... the community feeling it has added to my expierence with it..... I just appreciate it a lot :>
On that note. This is a very personal one, but.... home home <3 love all of you guys, so much. You geniunely feel like family. Like.... you're the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of what I could define as family. Always there for me. Safe. Kind. Able to laugh with as well as be serious with. Somehow always returns to good vibes. I just... it's crazy to think I wouldn't have found you all Have I not been in the dsmp fandom. Us, the fools, the inniters... we just found each other, and now we're here, and god, how thankful I am for that <3 You're all lovely, care you,,
And to return to actual stuff people outside my circle will know, I just. Appreciate how much fun people in this fandom are having. With the game, with the art, with the writing, with the discussion, with the dumb jokes and memes and trends, with just this.... foundation we've built. I don't think about it that much, but, it really is cool. I hope you're all having fun too. Everyone deserves that, everyone deserves fun, and to feel good. So...
Take good care, yeah? I don't know who will read this, and if I will know them, but just sending forth that people care, and that there is a lot of kindness in this world. You exist, and that's an amazing thing. The nature around you, the people around you, the ideas and stories and culture, it exists, and you're here to experience it. That's kind of really pog. Wish you all less burdens than you're having now, and... sleep well tonight. May your next morning bring you joy 💚
Toodles!!

I know different interpretations of a work are generally enriching and cool... but c!dream villan interpretations is like how to tell me you only watch Tommy without saying you only watch tommy.... which would be fine but its not a great place to be making statements about the whole nature of the dsmp lol
Wild speculation, but sometimes I wonder if like, because the dsmp didn't really start as a narrative, and a lot of fans don't nessecarily enter it expecting a narrative, but then there is one and the fandom is really discourse heavy and everyone is sort of excpeted to have an opinion while maybe not expecting to form one from the begining or not having a ton of experience with narrative in a way that would "expect" them to have an opinion or not take things at face value??, I don't know if I explained that well at all... and I don't really even think thats right nessecarily... but like wow sometimes some of the takes about power and government and villany...
Honestly, it makes sense!!!
I think something interesting is like.... looking at how animatics have shaped the like tone and culture of the fandom essentially. Like, an interesting fact that I didn't really fully grasp until SUPER recently is like...
c!Wilbur out the gate admits he is manipulating c!Tommy. Like his first youtube video on the Dream SMP he admits his goal is to manipulate c!Tommy and people like c!Tommy into helping him achieve a potion ("drug") empire to monopolize on potions because there were a lot of people on the server who like to min-max, which is to put all of your effort into this one specific skill essentially. so like... i know minecraft doesnt have a skill tree but if it did, it would be putting all your points into that one specific branch of a skill tree. So he wanted to exploit the labor of all the TommyInnits to.... maintain a Potion Empire.
THIS IS A LONG POST BC I GOT CARRIED AWAY SO BUCKLE UP
And I don't think a lot of the fandom who joined later on knows this. I certainly didn't until like a week or so ago? Like... I knew c!Wilbur had been manipulative from the start because I'm a mod of (shameless self promo incoming) @dsmpanalysis and we have a lot of different POVs in that mod team and discord and we talk about it really frequently. I joined the fandom as someone who was really big on L'manburg ESPECIALLY crimeboys, and have turned into.... *gestures vaguely to my blog*
And ngl I owe a lot of it to @1-michibiki-1 in terms of c!Dream "Apologism" but all of the mods there have expanded my thoughts and views on the storylines of this narrative.
My application consisted of like largely essays about like... how I think Dream was the villain but he was meant to be the villain because you don't get any insight into his character WHICH.... IS A FAIR ASSUMPTION AT FIRST GLANCE. People are easily villainized when you cannot get a glimpse into their thought process. It's easy to dwindle someone down into this flat character and starting out I knew Dream didn't stream the SMP on purpose.
And I personally came to the conclusion of "Oh! So Dream is supposed to be the villain." However as the story continued and I learned more about what Dream went through I began to realize that... it's more than likely a form of a red herring. My opinions on this were immediately solidified when I watched Ranboo's 2 MIL stream because both Ranboo AND Dream agree on enjoying red herrings.
There have been MANY times were Dream has said that c!Dream is a complex character and he's not a wholly evil guy and there have been times where the narrative has honestly just proved that.
Anyways, what's important though was that... I learned most of this from other people who were more focused on c!Dream rather than myself. Eventually I shifted from c!Tommy to c!Ranboo and c!Techno after c!Tommy betrayed c!Techno and I began to realize.... everything I learned before hopping in wasn't exactly what it seemed.
Part of this is because I'm older, I heavily identify with c!Techno's sense of loyalty and philosophies on government, but I especially identify with the anguish c!Techno voiced in... a lot of lore but especially the lore around Doomsday.
I'm not 16 anymore. I don't always feel wronged by adults, or older people in my case, whenever they absolutely have done something wrong by me, but I do feel wronged by my close friends. I also felt like c!Tommy's sense of loyalty didn't line up with mine after what felt like him constantly flip-flopping and refusing to understand c!Techno's morals on government didn't line up with his.
In short, it was easier to identify with Tommy in these animatics versus in the actual stream content because c!Tommy is played by a 16 year old. I'm not a teenager and my line of thinking doesn't entirely line up with people that age anymore. It's harder to place myself in the same shoes of someone's OC who is played closer to their actual age, because I'm not that age.
Regardless, I was still on the c!Dream is a villain train. I wasn't ever like... c!Dream is repulsive I hate him, but I was like omg hot villain lad go brrr.
Even when the first like... mellohi, panic room, Ranboo lore stream popped up I thought "Oh! c!Ranboo corruption arc?"
And I was excited because I really wanted this shy, nervous character to turn into villain buddies with his good pal c!Dream. I'm a total sucker for villains and corruption arcs and all that good shit.
SO I STARTED GETTING REALLY INTERESTED IN ENDERSMILE. I'VE BEEN ON ENDERSMILE SQUAD OUT THE GATE. NOT THE SAME WAY I AM NOW, BUT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED THEM TO TEAM UP.
So... upon not really keeping up with c!Dream and being relatively??? indifferent? I don't think I started arguments on c!Dream back then, but I might have. But I remember like... starting to participate more whenever c!Dream came up and looking more into Dream's character BUT ESPECIALLY TALKING WITH OUR SERVER'S C!DREAM SPECIALIST MICHI ABOUT DREAM A LOT MORE.
And because Michi has been a watcher since day one and was a DTeam fan rather than a SBI fan, she was able to provide me with more information on how the server worked pre-Tommy but especially pre-Wilbur.
Now, you could definitely argue well Michi probably has clear bias but it made sense to me when I looked back on how the storyline had been constructed and was going along, and everyone in the server talks a lot about our own biases and how we want people to maybe not lean so hard on them. Michi would also provide like anecdotes on what had happened and I'm sure links were probably provided at one point but the point was I felt like Michi had no reason to lie or manipulate how the story was told and if she did, eventually someone would have pointed it out because... Group of like... right now it's around 20 or more analysts but I don't remember how many at the time there were. POINT BEING, WE'VE ALL GOT POINTS TO PROVE AND IN MY EXPERIENCE NOT MANY OF US HAVE BEEN SHY TO PROVE THEM.
So if anyone ever had any differing opinions they would be talked about and we literally had and still have discussions.
REGARDLESS.... I DIDN'T FACT CHECK IN DEPTH BECAUSE I THOUGHT PEER REVIEW WAS ENOUGH WHEN YOU HAVE LIKE HOURS UPON HOURS OF STREAMS TO WATCH.
Anyways. Eventually I started paying closer attention and looking more into c!Dream lore but only recently have I started to triple check before speaking about c!Wilbur lore because I know everyone has biases and while I did trust everyone's thoughts and analysis in the discord, whenever I make essays I typically like it to be largely air tight and if theres a mistake, I want it to be because I forgot not because I just trusted what was said. Plus, I wanted to get down to the specifics of how Wilbur had always started with manipulation on the mind.
SO I WATCHED HIS FIRST VIDEO ON THE DREAM SMP.
AND WHAT I WAS NOT BY ANY MEANS EXPECTING WAS WILBUR TO SAY WORD FOR WORD, VERBATIM,
"SO WHY DON'T I START AN INDUSTRY WHERE I USE THE TOMMYINNITS OF THE WORLD TO WORK FOR ME, TO CREATE THINGS THAT THE MIN-MAXERS OF THE WORLD WILL WANT."
Like... this is in no way an attempt to like hardcore villainize c!Wilbur like everyone does Dream, it's just more so to like REALLY outline how far off a lot of fandom interpretation of c!Wilbur is....
Because of SBI focused animatics.
Now, when I joined I watched A LOT of animatics that really highlighted like... Wilbur being this self-loathing JD-esque, "I destroyed it because I had to because the world was against me because no one loved us, Tommy" type of character. At least... that's what it came across as.
And it definitely highlighted the fact that Tommy was a victim, which he is. He is undoubtedly a victim and no not even any dream apologist can change my mind otherwise. Tommy, despite being an instigator sometimes, didn't deserve the abuse he received.
But these animatics never shown the fact that c!Wilbur started L'manburg as a shady ploy to exploit people like c!Tommy and vilify c!Dream so he could have power.
And that was easy because Dream and Tommy had wars before. They had spars and pranks and here's the plan to take back my disks and here's the plan to out smart the thieving little child etc etc.
And all of the animatics I watched never mentioned this. Neither did the recaps though. The recaps gave the events flat out, there didn't sound like there was bias, and honestly I don't really know if there was rather than like... a lack of nuance. And it's hard to provide a recap with that much nuance in a short period of time for a youtube video, to be perfectly fair.
However, this creates a perfect formula for entirely rewriting the history of a server. c!Wilbur quite literally fucking succeeded TO A META LEVEL. He slandered and ran smear campaigns against Dream and like he even does that with Sapnap in the beginning. But what's crazy is that it transferred over into the meta! Most of this fandom understands Wilbur as a victim of mental illness, and yeah maybe? He definitely wasn't mentally well by the end of pogtopia, but he never started out with honorable intentions. L'manburg was never a victim, only its citizens. The TommyInnits of the world.
I just think it's like... such an interesting case study. Because this is like... an opinion like shared by at least half of the fandom, but the vilifying of c!Dream is shared by MOST of the fandom I would argue. Which is like even more crazy for me because that was c!Wilbur's goal!!!
LIKE I GO INSANE WHEN I THINK OF THIS BECAUSE HIS REACH IS JUST TOO POWERFUL. HE'S NOT EVEN ENTIRELY REAL, JUST A MANIPULATIVE PERSONA OF SOME BRITISH GUY.
And I mean... maybe people who have watched Wilbur's video on the SMP still maintain this idea that Wilbur wasn't always the bad guy, but honestly... I wouldn't be surprised if their introduction was still an animatic. Like bias is hard to check and I'm not going to lie I could have sworn I watched both Wilbur's AND Tommy's video on the SMP in the beginning and yet I STILL was a ride or die for tragic yet on some level still honorable Wilbur and a resilient Tommy.
Like... upon watching Wilbur's first video... possibly again I was surprised because I thought I did watch it like right before I even started watching the streams and yet I was still so invested in c!Wilbur as this tortured anti-hero.
It took 6 months of... not being in an echo chamber, full of multiple different people of different ages, different stream POVS, and people who joined the fandom at different points in time.
IDK IF THIS WAS EVEN ENTIRELY RELEVANT IT JUST FELT TANGENTIALLY RELEVANT AND THIS WAS SOMETHING I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT FOR A HOT MINUTE AFTER LIKE WATCHING WILBUR'S FIRST VIDEO AGAIN.
TLDR;
SBI CENTRIC ANIMATICS HAD A LASTING AFFECT ON THIS FANDOM AS IT'S HARD TO GO BACK AND ACTUALLY CHECK THE NARRATIVE FOR SOLID FACTS FOR YOUR OWN INTERPRETATION BASED ON THE FACT THAT THIS NARRATIVE SPANS OVER HUNDREDS OF HOURS WORTH OF TWITCH STREAMS.

this is an out of left field take (and sorry if you've heard this before) but can i just quickly say how much i dislike the handling of c!ranboo by a large portion of the fandom, specifically his mental health, compared to other characters in dsmp? cc!ranboo is a fucking phenomenal actor and it pains me so much that many people take the complex character he's created and turn him into a uwu baby wump version for the Trauma Porn, which is not great!! but then you compare that to characters such as c!niki, c!jack, c!philza, and c!techno - all of whom react to their own traumas in ways that aren't easily digestible "hurt/comfort recovery fic" prompts, and thus get slaughtered by ooc metas and just plain ableist analysis. i'm very, very worried that when c!ranboo finally does do something that the fan base can't excuse as "c!dream's fault" that they're going to swing from babying his character (which is already very :/) to making it his "villain arc" (hm. hate that phrase a whole lot :))) especially since it's mostly used :))))) in the context :)))))) of c!niki c!jack c!phil and c!techno :))))))))))) or treating him the way much of the fanbase does the previously described characters.
again sorry for this being a long and probably cold take i'm just. Tired of this fandom trend
YOURE RIGHT. YOU GOT IT ALL DOWN RIGHT.
ranboo is Good and Interesting and hes his Own Character not just some dream puppet like. hes not Immune to fucking up and doing wrong and stuff. but so often ppl will act as if his own actions Arent his own? like that dream is such an easy scapegoat for all that is ‘wrong’ with ranboo. so much ‘uwu baby ranboo hes so cute and innocent’ n shit. like nah my mans a lil fucked up ok cmon
back when ranboo First started panicking and speaking to himself and the obsidian box. i Very Much remember all the ‘takes’ bout an ‘insanity arc’ and ‘villain arc’ or that he was fucking ‘going insane’ like..... i Remember. it was kinda brushed aside but I remember that shit.
i dont doubt that like. ppl will go to villainizing him and the whole ableist ‘hes insane now’ type ideas if/when he acts in ways that dont align w the idea of him that ppl put in their own heads. esp w the syndicate i feel. so much is ppl pointing at techno now but what if ranboo starts going all in w the syndicate? what if he does something not entirely ‘morally right’? i feel we Will get that type a treatment jus like you we did w the current syndicate + jack like uy sayin

Oops me and Luc accidentally re-invented a whole fucking 'philosophy of analysis' debate via dreamsmp takes
this was orignally going to be a reply to this and this post, but it got *wildly* out of hand and now it's its own post! But it'll still be written as though i am directly addressing @lucemferto specifically because i,,, don't want to re-write it again <3
I am basically going to explain two opposing frameworks of thinking about analysis because i think it's interesting, if you like... analysis (a lot of us do) and you wanna over think things read on:
So hi! I think we re-invented structuralism vs post-structuralism
I was doing my philosophy reading for once, and came across these concepts and i was like: Hang on a fucking second i recognize this
suddenly a lot of shit clicked into place and i think i get where our repeated disagreement is coming from.
So idk your background, from the way you write and I get the feeeling you probably already know about this? And you probably have a much more complex and nuanced personal view on this as opposed to you being the hardcore structuralist I pretend you are in this post (god knows I'm not die hard post-structuralist in anyway) but for people like me who don't know what this is, imma try to explain it
DO NOT EXPECT THIS TO BE 100% ACCURATE I encountered these ideas yesterday, but I'm going to do my best to explain them and why they're relevant to dsmp.
What is Structuralism:
Structuralism is a way of thinking about text, that values systematic inquiry as a way to find a texts meaning
It’s based on both a psychological and linguistic perspective on storytelling. It looks for features in texts (here text means anything that conveys meaning) that are repeated, looks for patterns in the stories, and then uses these patterns to look at other texts. They’re narrative tools formed out of observation.
So you (Luc) care, not only about how dsmp tells a story on its own terms, but also about how it infers meaning by relying on tropes and conventions prevalent in the cc!s cultures.
You’ve (correctly in my opinion) said that dreamsmp may be unconventionally told but it’s still uses convention , and this is because “These people consume media and narrative, they’ve grown up with it – as do we all. It’s not just part of our psychology, it’s part of our everyday lives” [the post with this quote in]
So when you’re performing narrative analysis, you’re analysing the plot of dsmp as both what it is (what it conforms to, how it conforms) and what it isn’t (what it subverts, what does the subversion mean).
You are dissecting the plot of dsmp and looking at both what the dsmp is saying, and also where it looks like other things, and what those points of comparison tell us about the story.
You use narrative analysis to find the meaning of the text
What is Post-structuralism?
Complicated, like seriously i tried to look more into this and there was so much i simply closed the pdfs /hj It’s kinda like… analysis of analysis… meta analysis, it came about as a response to structuralism, a refutation of the idea you can find ‘a meaning’ of things.
But for this, what I’m focusing on, is the idea that “the critic moves roles from consumer to producer [of meaning]” Terry Eagleton (full citation at the end) and therefore different critics will produce different meanings.
I’m not saying everything single dreamsmp take is correct (that all readings of dsmp are exactly as valid as each other) because that’s not what post-structuralism means, but instead arguing that there is no way to analysis the text without, in someway, constructing it’s meaning.
So when you perform structural narrative analysis on dsmp, you can come to one, correct conclusion. And when I perform the same structural analysis of dsmp, I can come to a different, equally correct, conclusion.
The difference between both, what parts of the text you and I consume (who we watch) and the cultural contexts we consume dsmp within (this can be like, our different political or cultural backgrounds, or even how we interact with fandom), shape how we interpret the text, and these multiple readings are neither more nor less objective than the other (given all other variable controlled for like we both use the actual text not just stuff we made up you get what i mean-)
So I’m arguing that while you may use the tools of narrative analysis, the fact you’re using them while also like, existing in the world and consuming dreamsmp in a specific way, you are simultaneously discovering the narrative structure, creating the narrative structure, and finding its meaning. That you are not simply dissecting the dsmp plot, you’re participating in building its meaning.
And then I’m saying that while this has a lot of merit, it necessarily suppresses the inherent ambiguity of dsmp and in someway places itself as the only true narrative reading of dreamsmp Source for this idea, (page 5, Judith Butler)
THIS IS NOT TO SAY STOP DOING IT. I am instead advocating that there are multiple correct ways of reading dsmp.
Conclusion
So fundamentally we are approaching this wholleee thing from opposing sides. And i'm not gonna say one is better than the other because, idk man i’m just some guy i’m pretty sure people have probably been arguing about this for decades… but it does, to me, help me figure out what we are discussing, and what we’re trying to say?
Like it’s a framework for me to place this discussion within, and after doing research into both parts of this, I think I finally understand what you mean here.
Or at least I hope I do, I could be entirely wrong and it turns out you’re a post-structuralist as well (like you’ve said shit about authorial intent being not the most important thing in the world so honestly who knows maybe it is I who is misreading your posts as structuralist)
This has been super fuckin interesting like, genuinely. Trying to figure out the base hypothesis in your arguments and trying to find the bits that are making it not quite click for me has been really fun and rewarding, and i think i’ve finally got to the bottom of where the disagreements coming from, which is cool!
Imma still read your stuff and I’m sure there will be summit else that peaks my interest but i think I’m finally able to put this thread of reasoning to rest, I get where our fundamental differences in perspectives lie i think.
I've found closure /j

No but genuinely i got into dsmp when tommy does in the prison. I saw the tag 'HE'S DEAD' and people said it was about a fucking minecraft youtuber and i went 'what the fuck' and watched the vod. I was so fucking lost for about 2 weeks, i was reading posts and analysis and metas and kinda following but not really until i started to actually factchecking the stuff people were saying from the vods (tommyvods my beloved, easiest to find and consume) and it's been 4 months and i Know FOR A FACT that i know more about the early goddamn L'manburg and the entire exile arc more than some people who claim to be watching for much more than me. Like sure, lost media sucks and we all mourn them when we lose vods but holy shit the stuff we're constantly argue about aren't at all that hard to find? Most people just jump on to excuse that they are but like you said, you made whole ass playlist of vods, mfs just watch? It's not that hard? You can just speedrun the videos too if you just want to get the gist of it and don't have time but don't just telephone game blatantly untrue shit omg.
i have so much respect for you it’s unreal

Tumblr media
[Censored 1] said: this is really good! but please remember to tag this post with critical tags if youre gonna reblog it, i dont really care to much for dsmp PLOT, so i tend to block tags but… i cant really block it if its not tagged
Tumblr media
[Censored 2] Said: [Censored 1] totally agree with you. I also do not care that much about the plot I just enjoy the fan art and watching people playing minecraft together so please next time try to tag this only for Techno critical instead of Technoblade tag if you can. Sorry to bother.
[End transcription]
I’m censoring the specific usernames here because this post isn’t meant to “call out” anyone in particular, but this mindset is pervasive enough that I need to talk about it. the dream smp fandom has got to understand that tumblr is a public platform and that other people should not be expected to tailor their content for you. it is common courtesy to tag for things that can be triggering or upsetting and it is common courtesy to keep outright hate out of a main character tag. “hate” is a subjective term, but the way I’d define it is mindlessly bashing a content creator or character for the sake of itself. (meaning flat out insulting a character is not on the same level as character analysis that finds that something this character has done was morally wrong, or something like that).
people who aren’t interested in the plot of the series? share spaces with people who Are interested in the plot. it is completely unreasonable to say that someone who inhabits a part of the fandom that you don’t shouldn’t Be Allowed to be seen in the public tags. there is no reason why meta analysis has to be squirreled away. this is a public blogging platform and tags are used to spread posts to other people. telling someone that they shouldn’t be allowed to put their analysis in the main tags is telling someone that what they create shouldn’t be Seen by other people.
the tags exist for everyone in the fandom, that’s what the concept of tags is For. public tags are meant to represent the wide array of everything that belongs to a specific fandom, topic, or interest, while your dashboard is curated by you to suit your personal tastes. people in public tags are not beholden to your personal taste to be allowed to exist, and it’s your job to make sure the content that people post to your dash suits your own taste.
if content isn’t triggering, disrespectful to the creators, or nsfw there is no reason why it shouldn’t be allowed to be in the main tags. there is no reason why the tags should be tailored to the taste to one subset of fans in particular and not any other. it’s reasonable to ask people to tag critical posts if they’re going to put them in main character tags (simply for the fact that some people find them upsetting), it is not reasonable to say that they Can’t Exist in main character tags at all. everyone has to look at posts that they aren’t particularly interested in sometimes, and they scroll past them without saying anything because that is the reasonable thing to do.
none of this is even touching on the people who intentionally spam character critical posts to try to silence people who criticize characters they like, though that’s mainly because I don’t think that’s specifically applicable to the responses that pushed me to finally make this post. but I See that it’s happening and this weird expectation being placed on people who write character meta to bow to people who’re uninterested absolutely facilitates that kind of behavior.

ok so theres been conversation about how the dream smp is homestuck, just a decade later, and even if you hate homestuck, it’s literally the truth.
you can probably find plenty of posts about their similarities, and if you want I can make one, but i want to focus on the potential of the fandom moving to tumblrso the tumblr fandom is on the smaller side right now, but i’m going to paint you a picture and it’s going to be of homestuck’s golden age (which may have been cringe, but they were fun)
so here r cool things from homestuck’s tumblr fandom i miss that could be so easily recreated:
 upd8 tag!
this tag was used whenever the comic got an update, and everyone would liveblog or post about the update like IMMEDIATELY. it was SUPER cool, and i personally really liked it!! it felt like such a neat sense of community to go thru the tag and also refresh every few seconds because everyone was posting so frequently!!
speedy cosplays
the homestuck fandom had a lot of talented cosplayers, including people who would make a 5 minute cosplay immediately after the update of a new character or a characters new form or outfit. they were just REALLY cool and ridiculous sometimes and they would also be in the upd8 tag! i know there are talented cosplayers in the fandom, but they post more on tiktok because it is such a visual app! it’s literally a video app. however, tumblr is a jack of all trades and i just.. it would be cool lmfao
speedy fanart
this goes along with the speedy cosplays in the upd8 tag but dude seeing fanart of an upd8 that JUST happened that day was SO cool. it was so fucking awesome and it jsut made me like so happy sometimes??
 themes & the whistles
ok so themes were so important on tumblr they were like THE COOLEST thing and they used to be my FAVORITE thing because theyre so fun and customizable! i miss like going HAM on my theme and giving it all the bells and whistles like fandom scarves, the little sparkly cursor, finding a neat background and cool pixel art for the sidebar image, and also pixel families!!
fandom scarves
this is brief, and i’m working on making my own dsmpblr scarves, but they were images that would just hang down from your blog! for homestuck there were scalemates (dragon plushies), and banners of your classpects or moon orientation. that may not make sense, but they were personal and cool identity things! i really liked them and it’s why im trying to make some dsmp flag banners!
pixel families
these have gone out of style i guess because no one really has a big central fandom anymore who someone has made pixels of? but in homestuck there was a user @/feastings who made a BUNCH of homestuck pixels and everyone would use them to make a pixel family! essentially, you would make a page on your blog for your pixel family, ask your friends what character they wanted to be, and then hyperlink their blog through the pixel image!!! they were my FAVORITE dude and i miss them SO much because they were just so silly and fun!
 ask blogs!
now ik a lot of people make think these are or were cringe but personally i loved them. ask blogs where when you would make a blog for a character and essentially roleplay as them and have people ask you questions! a lot of artists did this and made funny or angsty comics with other ask blogs! they were super cute and i think it’d be fun to have like a dsmp ask blog community!
community au projects
we already have these and theyre definitely no “new thing” but i feel like it was such a cool community thing in the homestuck fandom. im sure your aware of the song “karkalicious” but it came from a community au called “broadwaystuck” and like, i don’t necessarily know if it was open, but a lot of people in the fandom knew about it and there were a lot of notable fandom members at the helm of it! im pretty sure the end of it was kind of messy, but i still think it was a really interesting thing! there was more than just “broadwaystuck” but im genuinely drawing a blank as broadwaystuck was one of the biggest
big meta
a lot of homestuck meta is... on tumblr. it’s lost to tumblr, because... no one made an archive really and unless you can remember urls it’s not necessarily easy to search for. something cool that the dsmp fandom has that homestuck didn’t though is... we already have an archive! imma self promote here, but @dsmpanalysis (s/o to @appleflavoredkitkats for being the head of it all!) is a whole archive of a lot of our meta! and i think it would be really cool to see how much more we could add! i just... really would like more analysis and theories because theyre SO fun
TLDR; more of the fandom moving to tumblr would be really fun, despite what a lot may think! i know it may be messy but big fandoms like this will always be messy. there are a lot of fun trends i would a) like to see brought back (big theme customizing, fandom scarves, pixel families, ask blogs, and community au projects) and b) could start on tumblr.
im really excited for the communities future and i’m for sure welcoming new tumblr users with open arms. tumblr is a really nice website in terms of functions and it gives communities tons of potential.

Alright, I've been on this website for more than a decade and never learned how to make an introduction post or a sideblog. That wasn't a thing in my time and I'm old. But fuck it.
Hi, I'm Vela and this is my mcyt/dsmp sideblog. I've been lurking around this fandom for months but the hyperfixation has finally won so here we are. I won't say what my main is but you can send a dm and ask. Not promising if I'll tell you but if we're mutuals already, I probably will. Do send dms or asks tho anytime! I don't bite!!! And love to talk!!!! Suck at it tho!!!!!!!!! Also pls use tone indicators if you do, I'm very dumb.
I do use caps and swear a lot and will probably shitpost and ramble A Lot and none of these will be organized unfortunately, just a fair warning. I'll probably do a lot of reblogging and talking in the tags and liveblogging. I usually try to tag things but my main is a multifandom mess so it was mostly for me and might not bother on this blog. Again this is my first sideblog, we'll see how it goes. I'll try to tag trigger warnings when necessary and y'all can ask me to tag specific things but not promising anything. My ADHD brain sucks in general.
I am a shameless inniter 🤪😔✌🏻 and will be posting majorly about my darling boy. Will occasionally have breakdowns about crime boys c! AND cc! . And I'm mostly up-to-date with the british gang/sbi-aligned ccs.
I will be reblogging maybe posting a lot of metas and analysis and I am very critical towards c!emeraldduo and c!dream (doomsday my beloathed) bUT I will definitely tag anything discourse-y with #discourse and #c![name] critical.
DNI if you do serious truthing and/or irl shipping. Any bigots/racists/terfs/truscums/etc are NOT welcome, die in a ditch thanks 🤗. I don't want any political stuff on this blog bc it's not the place but you will be blocked if you send any negative asks, i ain't afraid of that button and got no patience.

I've been thinking about this for a while so here we go
You could call this an AU I guess or a headcannon, but I call it "brain go yes"
So, I saw a post on here by @khizuo saying that "c!Technoblade is consistently rewarded for his actions" and he "has yet to face any major defeat". I agree with this take wholeheartedly and was trying to brainstorm ways of fixing that without changing major parts of the story as a whole. After a little while, I got an idea
The original post stated the easiest way to fix this is for c!Techno to "suffer a canon death and for him to be criticized for his actions on a meta narrative level" However, with the reasons they mentioned before, this isn't very likely to happen because of cc!Techno's reputation as a Youtuber and because season 2 of the SMP decided most of their victories based on who wins PVP Duels, like with Quackity vs Techno or Dream vs Tommy. So, what would be a way to give Techno a narrative "loss" without actually going against anyone?
You kill him.
And then unkill him
Let me explain...
Technoblade thus far has been the only person on the SMP ever to use a Totem of Undying. Totems in Minecraft are known as an "extra life" of sorts. They prevent death using some form of magic, but within the lore of Minecraft as a game, there isn't very much known about them. The basic points are that they were most likely made by Evokers, a subset of illagers that focus more on magic. Killing an evoker in the game drops these Totems.
In Minecraft, this has no adverse effect on the player, giving them status effects such as Fire Resistance, Absorption, and Regeneration. But the rules of Minecraft and the rules of the Dream SMP are different things. So, what if we change how a Totem affects a player. Instead of making them have no drawbacks, we change it so that there is only 1. Using a totem now takes a little bit of your body and your soul, leaving a scar on wherever the Totem chooses and having you feel slightly weaker overall.
But, this still isn't enough to count as a "loss" for Techno. Now he's little bit weaker, but could still probably beat anyone he goes up against in a fight. So, we add a bit more lore to the Totems
As I stated earlier, not much is known about Totems and where they come from or how they work. When you activate a Totem, it pops up on your screen for about 2 seconds and then it goes away. Within those 2 seconds of your screen being almost completely covered, you could still technically move around, but why would you if you couldn't see anything. So, why don't we use this to our advantage?
Evokers in Minecraft have 2 different attacks. The first is their fang attack, where they summon a few fangs to chomp at you from the ground. The second is where they spawn vexes, small ghost-like creatures that can fly through walls and are hard to kill. We're going to focus on the vexes for this. If evokers have the ability to prevent death from occurring, why don't they use this ability for their fallen allies, or even the vexes themselves. These guys already look like ghosts, so it must have failed somehow. Which is why I don't think they can prevent death, I think they can only resurrect those who have already died if they work fast
So, Totems of Undying don't actually stop anyone from dying, they just give life to beings that are already dead, which explains the totem popping up on the screen. It uses it's magic to give another life to those who use it.
So, using all of this information, what if Techno actually did die during his execution? Within those 2 seconds it takes for the magic to work, he went to Limbo.
According to Tommy, time goes faster within Limbo than it does in the SMP. So a day in the SMP is about a month in Limbo. Knowing this, we can say that 2 seconds in the SMP equates to about a minute in Limbo, which in my opinion, is just enough for Techno to situate himself and realize that he is actually dead with Wilbur, only for him to be thrust back into real life by his Totem, reviving him and letting him escape the Butcher Army
Now, after this, you can insert whatever idea you have about what he figured out while being in Limbo and how it affected him. I personally think he would describe Limbo as "cold, but not in a chilly way. Like how you can look at something and say it's cold without having to actually touch it. You can feel the coldness there, but you are sure of its presence" and he would almost immediately notice how it left a small mark on his back. I also think dying lessened the intensity and frequency of his voices, with them being completely gone when he was in Limbo with Wilbur. This gives him not necessarily a loss, but something that would probably eat at him for a bit, knowing he probably couldn't tell Phil because he would worry for both Techno and Wilbur. He could tell Dream when they get locked together in the prison, which would give Dream more motivation to test the capacity of the Revival book and Totems.
