Some Thoughts About... Dead Cells/Return To Castlevania

Long time readers will know that I'm a big, big fan of Castlevania, so I'm coming at this almost exclusively from the Castlevania side and not the Dead Cells side. Dead Cells is... okay. It's just not my kind of game. I can appreciate it for what it is and means to be, but that's not what I'm looking for in a game. I'm mostly not a fan of rogue-likes and I prefer exploration over combat, so yeah, Dead Cells is not meant for me and that's okay. But I do like Castlevania!

To get the Dead Cells bits out of the way first, don't buy the bundle of the game and the DLC together. It was significantly cheaper to buy the standalone game and then buy the CV DLC, so check your store before making any purchases. The thing I appreciate about Dead Cells is the speed it moves at. The game is zippy! But it comes at the cost of an awful camera. There's almost no dead zone for how much you can move your character before the camera starts moving too, so once you're running and moving all about, the camera is really swimmy and unpleasant until you get used to it, and the air combat is particularly bad too. There's also a near constant issue with your character grabbing onto things you don't want them to grab. Try to drop through a block near a wall and they keep pulling themselves back up to the block you just dropped through. So frustrating! The accessibility options are really nice and they give you some great gameplay tweaks. Especially since I'm only here for the Castlevania content, there's a lot you can change to get rid of the filler and some of the grinding. The game also shows you content you can't access because you didn't buy the expansions. You explore your way through an area, find the exit, and... you're not allowed to use it because you didn't buy a specific expansion. It's not like you can just buy it there and access it right away like in a mobile game, so why populate the map with exits in the middle of the game that you can't use? I could understand having the advertisement there at the start or end of a run to push you to make a sale, but getting it in the middle of a run didn't make me want to buy the new stuff, it just frustrated me. Which probably isn't the emotion most conducive to getting people to spend more on DLC. I'm also surprised at just how grindy the game is. Finding new outfits or weapons doesn't unlock them for use. You also have to spend currency once you have the blueprint and some of the costs are nuts. It costs an entire highest difficulty run's worth of cells to unlock a new outfit that's just a color swap of an outfit you already have. It feels like the game should be all about experimenting with different weapons but they cost so much to unlock that the game seems to be working against itself.

The storytelling is also really disappointing. The game throws so much at you with so little explanation of even basic who/whats/wheres that it just seems like stuff... happens. Why did that man attack me? Why did I blow that man up? I dunno! I was exploring and trying to find lore bits but there are so few of them in a particular run and you can get so far into your first runs that it feels really poorly put together. Compare that to the story telling in Rogue Legacy, one of the few rogue-likes I enjoy. Man, I loved the story in Rogue Legacy. It's sparse, but I was so excited to find the little bits and pieces that built everything up and slowly unfolded what was going on behind the scenes as you push deeper into the game. So good! And RL did a great job of tying game mechanics to the story. But in DC, you'll kill named characters before you're introduced to them or know anything about them and it takes multiple play-throughs before it comes together, and even then it's just "I dunno, unexplained time rifts that only affect some people and not others!". I'm also not sure if I'm done with the content of the game and how much I'm missing. It seems like it's just randomly finding lore drops and then I see online somebody mention that different events happen if you use different items or wear a specific outfit in a certain area and then you have to use specific modifiers and then a specific move to access the final area of the game. And then you have to do that again a second time to get the final ending. Also, you have to get DLC to get the actual ending. But now the DLC isn't available anymore. But maybe it's been rolled into the main game now but I don't know because the game doesn't tell you any of this and you get different results from searches because it might be different depending on where you're playing the game. You made the content, I paid for the content, so let's explore that content and not hide it from me. I shouldn't need to follow a guide on a wiki page to see this game I paid for. This doesn't feel like a cohesive package. It feels like a bunch of stuff taped onto a core but with the expectation that you've followed every release and know all the changes before you sit down and try to play.

So on to the important/Castlevania stuff! The game does a really poor job of telling you how to access the CV content. I'd heard from people online about the CV content being certain exits during a run so I was searching for it through my first run and found nothing. Then after your first run, there's an explosion and lava that the game leads you to! But no Castlevania. But then bats fly by! But nothing there... You still have to hunt down the stage exit that leads to the CV content, which I would have missed on my second run because I found a different exit first and if I hadn't seen somebody play it online, I wouldn't have known to skip that exit and find the CV one. This game's UX is bad. Did it just not dawn on anybody that doing a licensing deal with a major IP would bring in new players unfamiliar with the base game so a quick "here's how to access the thing you paid for and care about" would have been good?

You can access the CV music right away but the implementation is pretty disappointing. During the non-CV stages, you get music mostly from Symphony of the Night and that is surprisingly low quality. SotN's soundtrack is great, but I was hoping for more CV 1 and 2 and a little more breadth from the decades this franchise has been around. And it's not a variety of music either. The CV music it applies to that biome is just the song you get. I was expecting more like a jukebox where each biome would have a playlist of songs rather than looping the same one.

The new stages are... okay? They're pretty short and the first one is fairly plain. There are no interesting gimmicks to set it apart from the other normal DC stages. The second stage is also plain but there are several moments where Dracula teleports in and messes with you in some silly ways. It's fun because it doesn't feel like Drac is menacing. He feels like, at best, he's toying with you and at worse, he's just there to knowingly be a dick. There are only the two CV stages but for no apparent reason, you're only allowed to play one per run. They occupy different spots in the route (Death at the beginning of a run and Dracula at the end) so it doesn't make sense why you can't do both. The stages also don't run very well. It took so long to load into Dracula's Castle that I thought the game had locked up and once you're in, the game hangs up when some effects play, like it's loading them in as they happen.

There's nothing special about the enemies. Armor Knights, fishmen, skeletons that throw in an arc, buer, bats, and a harpy. It really took me a while to realize the werewolf was supposed to be a werewolf. No Medusa heads, fleamen, white dragons, or any of the other dozens of recognizable characters. There's a miniboss pulled from CV but it's just the one. You come across other bosses, but they're just objects in the background, the Beheaded makes a quip about them, and that's all. The CV heroes don't look great, but Richter fares the worst. They're so much bigger than the Beheaded, but they retain the faceless look of older CV sprites. That worked because their faces were so tiny on your CRT TV, but now all big and defined, Richter's head is a fleshy void. And for some reason, Shanoa is there to serve as the Collector's role in the CV stages. Weird choice as this thing is almost all SotN-based but then you get a random Shanoa appearance. At least Konami remembers she exists?

The sub-weapons are pretty no-frills takes on the axe, cross, bible, and so on. They included that weird rebound stone one that's rarely ever useful. The main weapons are more interesting, but DC already had whips so the scythe is the only one that stands out (but it's pretty bad against bosses, so I usually drop it by the end of a run).

There's a "Richter Mode" mini-game you can stumble upon, where you play as Richter and the gameplay mechanics are set more like Castlevania's. It's... fine. It's a regular stage that adds the Bone Pillar enemy and you use the high jump and dash relics for Richter's movement upgrades. It looks like an explorable space from the map, but it's really a linear path to the two movement upgrades and then two paths that wind up in the same place. You fight the same mini-boss in the Dead Cells CV stage and then it just ends. The jumping feels really bad so it's not particularly fun and there's nothing there to encourage replaying it. Weirdly enough, they use a different Richter model from the DC content and since it's smaller, it looks so much better.

If you're a Castlevania fan only, this DLC isn't for you. The CV window dressing is nice but it's not going to make you like Dead Cells. If you're a Dead Cells fan already, you may be into it, but you're not getting a lot. Maybe wait for a sale or just look up videos of the boss fights depending on what $10 is worth to you. It's not outstanding and it's light on content, so it's not going to hold you over for the next Castlevania game.

I am not sure if you have already replied because I can't seem to find it. If not, please notify in case you would be interested in posting, there is no pressure or complaints if the answer is not affirmative. Also, I am hoping to read your piece on current issue DD is facing in relation to Nike. I am sure a lot of people enjoy your straight, detailed and analytical thought process and information presentation. A lot of people especially ifans needs to understand the perspective and position an actor or any national level influencer/celebrity is in when they are a citizen of totalitarian regime.

Hello Anon! I sincerely apologise ~ my ask box has been very full, and I answer based on time availability (which isn’t much) and “urgency” of the matter (for example, the recent post on Dangai/WoH skipped the line because it’s current). My whim too, occasionally and admittedly; sometimes I’d like to take a breather and talk about something a little more fannish and fun (like window cleaning robots!) Above all, I prefer giving delayed but responsible, or even no answers over irresponsible ones, given some of the subject matter I touch upon. I’ll ... probably have to write up an ask box policy at some point.

Now, my thoughts about Dd’s current situation ... or maybe, my thoughts about the things around it ...

I should explain where my highly disorganised thoughts this time come from first. I’m a Hong Konger by birth, and I grew up at a time when it was still conventional for Hong Kongers to refer themselves as Chinese, following the tradition of referring to the (believed) origin of one’s paternal family as our own origin. I’ve never, however, sworn allegiance to the Chinese government; the two citizenships I’ve ever held are 1) United Kingdom (Hong Kong was still a British crown colony when I was there), and 2) United States.

The distinction between China, the country, and Chinese government, as the country’s rulership, has therefore always been clear to me. You can love, feel a bond with the country, its people and culture and its 5,000 year old history, without having feeling anything with its 71 years-young government with foreign (soviet) roots. To quote Hamilton: Oceans rise, empires fall, and just the central plains of China alone went through a total of 13 recorded dynasties, during which its border waxed and waned, often splitting what is now Chinese territory into multiple countries under different rulership that sometimes split along ethnic lines—China, in that sense, isn’t even historically a country as we define one today; it’s a piece of land in East Asia where different countries have taken over, risen and fallen. And the major ethnic group, Han, which also includes the vast majority of the current political elite, wasn’t always in control. The Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) was famously built by Mongolians; the Qing dynasty (1636–1912), Manchurians. Beijing, the current capital of China, began its illustrious history as The Capital City for the non-Han based, north-of-central-plain dynasties of Liao and Jin. Liao people were believed to be either Mongolic or Tungusic. Jin people were Tungusic, and would eventually become Manchurians. Xinjiang (新疆), meanwhile, was only under the influence of the ancient Chinese empires sporadically, and its formal conquest / incorporation by a Chinese dynasty didn’t happen until ~ 1760, and by the (Manchurian) Qing dynasty. Its late incorporation is also reflected in its name that means, literally, “New Territory”.

What does this all mean? It means: 1) Loving China =/= loving the Chinese Communist Party; 2) Chinese culture =/= Han culture; especially the Han culture infused with “Core Socialist Values” as defined by the Chinese Communist Party; 3) X dynasty’s territory (where X = one of the ancient Chinese dynasties) =/= What has to be People Republic of China’s territory.

And by writing down these three =/=, which I’d argue are simply conclusions from historical facts and logic, I’ve committed an act of subversion in the eyes of the current Chinese government. Remove the “/” in “=/=“, and you’ve got three of the most important talking points of Chinese propaganda.

The sacred, un-violatable rules the Chinese government tells its people.

Why do I mention them? Because the scrutiny, the attack on Dd read familiar to me, and is probably familiar too to all those who’ve kept even a brief eye on Hong Kong and Taiwanese entertainers who work in China. When a topic that violates one of these propaganda points makes news (for example, the HK protest, Hong Kong/Taiwan Independence), entertainers from Hong Kong / Taiwan—anyone who’ve achieved name recognition—are often placed under immediate scrutiny by Chinese netizens to see whether and when they’ll confirm their loyalty towards the Chinese government. The argument is that only those who display absolute loyalty to the Chinese government deserves to earn China’s money, and the main motivation behind this scrutiny, in this case, is mistrust: Hong Kong, after all, is crawling with British loyalists and rioters according to Chinese propaganda, with separatists who’re conspiring with foreign governments to overthrow the Chinese government; the democratic island nation of Taiwan, meanwhile, is supposedly a rogue child who has escaped its mother (China) ’s arms for the past 70+ years—the child who, by the way, shall be brought to their knees (along with into their mother’s arms) by military intervention. Both places, in other words, are serial violators of =/= 1) and 3), and not to be trusted. If their entertainers fail to affirm their loyalty towards the Chinese government, or if the timing of their patriotic display is perceived as off, vicious accusations—similar to those Dd has endured—will fly, and calls for boycott begin.

Here’s a related observation, while I’m at it ... no one in c-ent is really allowed to keep their political views quiet, even if they’re not particularly well-known. No one can say, politics isn’t for me, it’s too ugly/too complicated/doesn’t fit my image and shove it under the proverbial carpet. Under an authoritarian government, control is exerted via politics, via propaganda that seeps into day-to-day language. It’s an oil slick that taints and swims in even the smallest crevice of life—there’s no where to hide.

And Dd is far more famous than almost all of these HK and Taiwan based entertainers. 表態 — a public announcement of his stance — is the only option left for him when he becomes the centre of a sensitive political issue such as this one. And there’s really only one stance he can take.

In that sense, what happened to Dd isn’t something I’m too worried about—this kind of attack under the guise of a “loyalty check” isn’t new; and the motivation behind the scrutiny of Dd is the safer to-take-down-his-career rather than political mistrust. I believe this storm shall pass soon, as long as his team doesn’t make an unexpected, big mistake. His non-fan fellow country people will probably view him with a more positive light as well: he walked the walk and did what he believed is patriotic — breaking a contract like this is no lip service when in China, performative patriotism is often lip service — reportedly even among the top Chinese Communist Party officials.

If I must find more defence for his stance ... please forgive me, Anon, but I don’t have much more to say than what I said last night, what I said before about China’s access to information—

—because, admittedly, following, talking about this incident is difficult for the Hong Konger in me, even if I’ve expected this kind of incidents from the moment I joined this fandom, even if I’ve expected, as I’ve learned from RL experience, that most people I adore in China will at some point support causes that I deeply disagree with. The online patriotic rally by c-motors and c-turtles under the associated Weibo tag, while impressive and good for Dd, is nonetheless heartbreaking/frightening for me to watch. Why? Because I know this can easily turn into a call to persecute all Hong Kongers involved in the democracy movements sometime in the future. Because I know the rally will probably be as impressive if this has been a call to persecute all Hong Kongers involved in the democracy movements. Frankly, I stopped thinking about Nike as I scrolled through the posts — I was thinking about the now impossibly wide gulf that separates most Chinese and a Hong Konger like myself; I was thinking about why a Gg / Dd performance can trend on Twitter in 10+ countries all over the world but makes almost no noise in Hong Kong or Taiwan, places that should’ve most easily fallen in love with Gg / Dd with their closeness in language and customs.

As it turns out, the closeness has only driven HK and Taiwan away; the closeness only brings them more insight of the beast—the government that looms over, cast a long shadow over everything that lives under it, including Gg and Dd.

I was reminded of the fact that many young Hong Kongers probably see me as a traitor just for being a turtle — young Hong Kongers who are n>1 generation immigrants from China, who never spend years reconciling the conflicting viewpoints, the even more conflicting emotions when it comes to this ... almost irreconcilable difference now in political beliefs north and south of the China-HK border. Unlike the older generations who often have immigrants/refugees from China for immediate, un-severable family, who often don’t have the option to walk away from the conflicts, to simply point to the other side and call it evil.

And here are my even-more-conflicting emotions:

While, over the years, I’ve learned to harbour no ill feelings to the vast majority of supporters of pro-CCP causes—I reserve blame for those who conceal the truth, who’re involved in its policy making, or people who live outside the Firewall and should know better (such as every HK entertainer who’ve expressed support)—I’ve also learned, over the same years, to be fully, painfully aware that every endorsement is still an endorsement for the regime to carry on its ways, and the damage is real, is significant even if the endorsers may not know about the true nature of their endorsements.

A simple thought experiment: the sheer size of China’s population means it can easily control the narrative on English-speaking social media. The Chinese government already has a history of mobilising its people to scale the Great Firewall and spread its propaganda on, for example, Twitter. It has also mobilised fan circles for propaganda purpose. Again, as a thought experiment *only* (ie, SJD!), imagine the Chinese government mobilising Dd’s Weibo supertopic fans to spread misinformation about Xinjiang.

Dd’s supertopic has 5+ million members—all savvy social media users and many skilled in the art of comment control (a collective effort, performed by fans to bury critiques/dissent on message boards); the total number of Uyghurs in Xinjiang is ~12 million, but their communications are heavily scrutinised and they can’t really talk. Just for the sake of argument, we’ll add the ~ 70% pro-democracy HK population to Uyghur’s side: that’s another 5 million, but most of them aren’t good at raging a battle on social media.

Which side will control the narrative in the end?

And so: I understand why Dd’s statement is what it is. I don’t fault him for making it. Still, I can’t in good conscience say to anyone, myself included, that the statement is a personal opinion and doesn’t matter. It matters a lot. His announcement is another stab to the Uyghurs, and the knife is sharp because of Dd’s social influence.

(Today, I saw Dd’s name for the first time in a Hong Kong pro-democracy online news site.)

The statement carried this sentence:

國家尊嚴不容侵犯，堅決維護祖國利益 The dignity of the country is not to be violated; the interest of our motherland is to be resolutely defended. Firstly: it’s character-for-character propaganda language. Secondly: even if we do not consider the labor camps, this is the condition in Xinjiang’s city of Urumqi. Where’s the dignity of the people who’re living there and who’s preventing that from being violated? The interest of the motherland—what kind of motherland answers an allegation of human rights violation with “interest” (利=profit, advantage; 益=benefit)? What kind of motherland has “protects its interest” being synonymous with surveillance and abuse of its own people?

I have a motherland, but it’s not the one in this narrative.

The issues of Xinjiang and the Uyghurs have also become even closer to Hong Kongers since 2019, when the fates of Hong Kongers and the Uyghurs became intricately tied—as dual examples of Chinese government’s human rights violations and indeed, these two populations who previously had very little in common have shown solidarity with each other against all odds. Their connection being this one simple, awful fact: both having what they value most stripped away by the same government—the traditions, religion and culture for the Uyghurs, the promised freedoms and hopes for democracy for Hong Kongers. As an online meme goes: “Today’s Xinjiang; Tomorrow’s Hong Kong” — expressing the fear that Hong Kongers may soon be subjected to the same surveillance as the Uyghurs today, for the same reason of having put up a fight against who they saw as their oppressors (this article offers an objective summary of what led to the 2009 clash between the Uyghurs and the Chinese government, which precipitated the former’s treatment as will-be terrorists today)(Note the role the US played in this.).

As such, I cannot look away from Xinjiang. As such, I cannot look at our two beautiful stars, Gg and Dd, without also seeing the flag with its blood red looming behind with its own five stars—the biggest of them symbolising the Chinese Communist Party.

How do I reconcile all the feelings? As I said, it’s a constant work-in-progress, possibly a lifelong one. Re: Gg and Dd, that’s what I tell myself at the moment: that my being an i-turtle shall not sway my view or silence me on any sociopolitical issues, that my being a fan of anything, anyone shall not mean any other human life is suddenly worth less to me, or its suffering, something I shall suddenly look away from. The moment this becomes true—that I find myself depreciating human lives, or ignoring the pain of others for the sake of my fannish pursuits—that’s when I must leave my fan identity until I find my discipline (I do understand the lure of a happy fandom bubble, and I’m far from immune to it). I’m a person before I’m a fan.

These are the rules of my world.

But...once you express interest over Valentine's Day, he is willing to understand the holiday in your perspective. Perhaps there was something there that he wasn't able to appreciate yet. Perhaps all that he needed was to see things in YOUR perspective.

Is the type to bring you to a romantic date. Candlelit dinner with a bouquet of his homegrown roses? Wouldn't the sight of you be lovely under a star-littered moonlit night? Away from the cacophony of Lamentation. Away from his duties and obligations. Away from the usual restrictions he forced himself to get used to.

"I think I'm beginning to understand its appeal. Valentines, I mean."

At the right moment and at the right mood, you realised that Lucifer was quite the romantic.

He totally didn't mull over the perfect chocolate to give to you WEEKS in advance or anything.

Those tickets for the planetarium that just so happened to be reserved on Valentine's Day? A mere coincidence! You can turn him down if you want! (He would definitely NOT cry over it for days).

Is probably the demon brother who fussed over the occasion the most, especially since he can use it as an excuse to be more honest with his feelings.

LEVIATHAN

Half-dreading and half-excited about Valentine's.

On one hand, it's a disgusting, man-made holiday by capitalistic society. On the other hand...it's a "flag" for so many "RL events": a chance to raise his affection parameters!

Probably played a ton of dating sims as a point of reference to his chocolate making.

...and is genuinely surprised that chocolate making is SO MUCH MORE than stirring the chocolate in a particular direction.

DOGI MAGI* LIED TO HIM!

You mean the type of chocolate won't also change based on the decoration you put on it? What's his hundreds of hours spent romancing Ruka and Kou in Dogi Magi 3 amount to, then?!

It took him a while, but once he got over the starking difference between 2D and reality, he made a pretty decent batch of kyara-choco that he was able to give to you.

...just don't ask how he had come so far. He didn't want to remember it either.

SATAN

Homemade chocolate all the way.

Probably bought some cat shaped moulds in Akuzon a few days before Valentine's.

Is also the type to buy chocolate a lot earlier than Valentine's itself.

Besides it being usually priced cheaper because of the lesser demand, he also wanted to practise on making the chocolate he would give to you so everything would be "perfect" on the day itself.

He prefers his chocolate semi-sweet. Not too bitter and not too sweet.

Makes them into bite-sized pieces with outer shells that wouldn't melt on your fingers so easily. Perfect for book dates!

ASMODEUS

Is the type who would give you the fancy G*diva chocolates at a famous chocolatier

Probably has some sort of fruit or liquor inside. Either way, it's expensive as hell. Anything cheaper than that would spoil the feelings he wanted to convey in his gift for you.

Money is just money. You, however are priceless and irreplaceable.

Also is the type who would give you candy hearts and cute little notes.

"Will you be my Valentine?"

"You're adorable!"

"I love you, MC! Let's spend Valentines again next year, shall we? ♡"

BEELZEBUB

Made some homemade chocolates with Belphie to give to you on Valentine's Day.

It took a lot of willpower not to gobble up the finished batch, but with Belphie there to watch over him, and the anticipation of your reactions was enough for him to hold back.

Is generous with toppings and decorations. It's almost as if he made twice the normal amount of portions so he could share them with you.

He liked the idea of sharing chocolate with you and Belphie on the day itself, spending time with his important people on the day of love.

There are some people too who he'd love to share a few sweets with, but they aren't there anymore. Which is why...he decided that sharing moments like this with the people he cares about while they're still there matters.

BELPHEGOR

Made some chocolates with Beelzebub. He had expected the huge amount of ingredients they will need so he was able to save some portions for the chocolates he would actually make for you.

Beelzebub gobbling up all the chocolate was enough to keep him awake for the entire chocolate making process.

He wasn't really used to making sweets, so he was quite proud to see how well his first attempts to make some for someone else had been.

The fact that you enjoyed them just as much made him only the happier.

Although...he wondered if the three of you would be able to finish every chocolate in one sitting. Just looking at the sheer amount he and Beel made is making him tired.

...oh well. At least it's an excuse to spend more time with you.

hi there, apologies for being unresponsive. i decided to log out of tumblr a few days ago because: 1) i really need to finish the chapter 6 of hdylyst (AND IT'S FINISHED!!), 2) apparently i'm still tired from digiweek and rl stuff, 3) tumblrdom were going for a protest so i figure it's gonna be quiet anyway.

in another news, i got a job.

it's not a company i was hoping for. the industry was far from my interest, although the position is pretty much in line with my background. however, what crushed me the most was the salary—which was off my expectation by 30%.

after giving it some thought (and crying on my bed for the whole night) i decided to just take it. recently, i was treated unfairly during recruitment by a company, so at least this company pays some respect and being professional in the hiring process.

i also came to a conclusion that the salary might not be ideal, but the world itself is not really in an ideal situation right now. some people are struggling to find a job. some people even lost their job. i should be a little grateful that at least someone wants to hire me.

well, if i'm not comfortable of doing this job, i can just resign... right?

anyway, we never know until we try. i almost rejected my first job too because it's not aligned with my background, but i ended up enjoying myself so much. who knows if this will happen again with this job?

also, if this happens to be a bad decision, i have to believe that i still have enough time to fix it. i have to have takuya's mindset on my own fic (that's why i said this fic is very personal to me lol).

aaanyway, the job will start on monday. one of the good things about this job is i can work from home full time during the pandemic (also because my city is on a semi-lockdown), but i still have to go to the office for first-day admins. i'm not sure how busy i will be, but take this post as a heads-up. if i go missing, probably because i'm too busy with the job. if i still spend a lot of my time here, that means my job is very stressful and i need some distraction LMAOOO DON'T JUDGE ME.

He probably wouldn't go to the next one either, anyway, details), Sid and G warming down after an early round win (gotta take that stuff seriously at their age yknow, no one's 23 forever), trading league gossip, Sid starts in on an anecdote 'yeah you remember what Luongo was like in Sochi, when he -' G cuts him off emphatically 'nope' really sounding out the plosive, huffs a laugh so Sid knows he isn't too upset about it. 'shit sorry man, forgot it was your first time'

Sid keeps making jokes until G does actually start getting kinda frustrated, 'is this a thing for you?'

Spoiler alert: it is, they roleplay G being a virgin, maybe even a rookie, maybe with a bit of a hero worship crush on Sid, Sid being the Big Deal Captain who's the first guy to have rookie!Giroux choke on his dick, who gets crazy hot for G white-knuckling the sheets and gasping about how big he is, etc.

Sid's maybe kind of embarrassed after, G even worse off (like yeah they'd been pretending but he'd still begged for it, he'd still made those noises, he'd still -), but they get up the next day and play the next game and it's fine, and when Canada wins gold and they're doing some Q+A thing wearing these huge medals around their necks, and a reporter says 'this question's for Claude, you never been to the Olympics before, right?' G glances at Sid, smirking, before answering 'yeah well there's a first time for everything' and Sid spends the rest of the presser desperately trying not to laugh

Mtkachuk and Draisaitl: so part of my weirdly over-developed mtkachuk headcanon is he's self-conscious about his body for some reason, and this came up in a chat recently so i’m just gonna borrow my thoughts because maybe if i put it out into the universe someone will write it (under a cut because long)(ETA: THIS EVOLVED so warning for dubcon, general filth, bad language etc):

objectively there is nothing [about his body for him to be self conscious about] but What If it was: tits

I would enjoy a fic that explored that maybe. Maybe the other guy is nice about it.... But maybe............... They Are Not

the existing RL dynamic where Leon HATES him and Matthew is just like. Enjoys someone paying attention to him and is kind of amused at Leon’s depth of feeling and maybe also a bit turned on about it. And then Leon stumbles across the knowledge that he’s self-conscious about his body somehow and in his angry insults further stumbles upon the precise focus of said self-consciousness

Are they already fucking when Leon finds this out or does he find out and THEN they hook up, idk

If it's the latter it's because Leon says something about it (blindly) and it's the one thing that makes Matthew fucking SNAP

Like he's been blithely volleying Leon's insults while they circle each other on the ice, maybe doing that dumb upright wrestling thing that players do when they aren't ready to commit, looking like he's laughing at Leon all the while which drives Leon MAD and he's so DISGUSTED at himself for giving a shit about this ASSHOLE, and then Leon spits out something about fuck idk 'can see why you'd want to keep that covered up man, got the same tits as my 10th grade girlfriend' and Matthew LUNGES, not even just for the show of it like he usually fights but really trying to HURT Leon, but so frantic with it that he can't get anything to land

Oh actually they're not on the ice for this because I need Leon to realise that while matthew is indeed genuinely irate he is also FULLY boned up

And Leon is DELIGHTED to finally have something on matthew, to finally have the upper hand. like for once he gets to feel like he's not the one embarrassing himself by being too invested. And as soon as matt realises Leon's noticed - maybe as soon as MATTHEW notices - he scrambles away mortified and sprints the fuck out of dodge

And like Leon would LOVE to take the chance to feel superior, like maybe now he's come out on top for once he can get on with the rest of his life without feeling like he's got a score to settle with some mouthy smirking asshole with shitty hair who plays on a team that doesn't even MATTER, like, Leon WON. Now he can MOVE ON. except he can't stop fucking thinking about it, the hot flush on matt's cheeks, the raw fury making matthew's fingers bite into Leon's flesh and how maybe just for a second, just at the end there, it looked like maybe matthew was gonna cry about it

Anyway blah blah the next time they play each other and Leon tracks Matthew down in the [arena stadium idk] and Matthew tries to brush him off, none of the gleeful chirping he'd normally unleash upon seeing Leon out in the wild, but Leon doesn't let him, pushes and pushes and gets up in his space

Until Matthew shoves at him, drops his water bottle and his keys and his two fucking cellphones (one's for 'business') and gets Leon right in the solar plexus, and it hurts, enough that it makes Leon dizzy for a second and when he blinks back into clarity he's got Matthew against the wall, one of Matthew's arms twisted between them, the other hot in Leon's hand, his pulse so rabbit-fast it feels like humming

They're the same size pretty much, but Matthew's scattered, eyes darting all over, trying to pull free in every direction at once, and Leon's focused. Can channel all his energy towards Matthew, into him, keeping him here

Leon shifts even closer, leans more of his weight, yanks at Matthew's wrist where he was trying to twist it away

'you're gonna let me see them,' he says, face tucked in tight to Matthew's neck. Heat's coming off him like asphalt, humid and syrupy

'the fuck're you talking about,' Matthew grits, still twisting under him, and honestly Leon doesn't know, didn't know he was going to say that until he did, but it's there now, and the certainty of it keeps him in place like a lead weight, like a cliff face Matthew's throwing himself against

'you're gonna show me,' Leon says, 'your pretty fuckin' tits, gonna let me see'

'what - what -' Matthew's chest spasms under Leon like he's laughing, but the sound doesn't come out right, just this tight wet noise from the back of his throat

'yeah,' Leon says, letting his voice loose against the hot skin at Matthew's jaw, 'yeah, get you naked, spread out for me, let me get my hands on them'

Leon's blood never settled from the fight and it's pounding in his ears, thump-thump-thump like the bassline at a club, driving bodies forward, pushing them higher. His hands are sweat damp now but it doesn't matter, Matthew isn't fighting any more, not really, not like he's trying to get away. Squirming under Leon like - like -

'hardly got enough for each hand, huh, but you're gonna let me anyway,' and Matthew jerks so hard under Leon it takes the wind out of him for a second, so he doubles down, puts all his weight into holding matthew against the wall, all his limbs pinned. 'you want me to, right? Want me to look at you, it's all you ever fucking want, can't get enough of it'

If he'd been thinking he'd have braced then, because surely Matthew isn't going to let him keep saying this shit, but Matthew’s shuddering, this rumble that travels over into Leon’s body, and if Leon’s out of breath it’s nothing compared to Matthew, panting rough and raw

'you gonna jerk me off while I feel you up, huh matty? Get your hand on my dick, let me - fuck, let me come on you, come all over your pretty little tits'

Matthew sobs, wet, Leon can feel the tears smearing against his cheek, but he's riding Leon's thigh now, grinding against it like a girl really would. Leon slaps his hand over Matthew's mouth, ignoring the shocked little noise Matthew makes at that because he's being so loud

'fuck, fuck, fuck,' matthew's repeating under his breath, eyes squeezed shut still. He hasn't looked at Leon.

Leon's so hard his balls hurt, and the hand he was holding over Matthew’s mouth is floating awkwardly near his shoulder, damp from Matthew’s tears, from his sweat. He has a powerful urge to move it back, slip his thumb into Matthew’s mouth, make him lick the salt off, but he - it doesn’t feel like he can, now

Matthew blinks open. His eyes are red, and Leon can see his tongue in his open mouth, wet and shiny everywhere.

‘you’re fucked up,’ Matthew says, hoarse. Leon nods, slowly, warily, because. Well, yeah. ‘you’re not gonna...’

He trails off, and Leon isn’t sure - not gonna tell anyone? is that what he was going to say? Leon isn’t, jesus fucking christ is Leon not telling anyone about this, where would he even start - and then Matthew swallows, throat clicking loud in the silence, and when Leon looks at him he lets his eyes trail down, down, past Leon’s face and his torso and... oh, ok. yeah. Leon lowers his hand, slowly, thumb catching on his waistband, still watching Matthew’s eyeline.

‘D’you want me to?’ Leon says, his fingers just edging under. Matthew doesn’t say anything, and then he shrugs, barely. Leon’s not even touching him any more. ‘Yeah. Yeah, you do.’

14 - I’ve been slowly re-posting old stuff when I get around to it, between old archives going offline and the sheer number of hard drives I’ve managed to kill over the years, I’ve lost a lot of the original files for my stuff and going back and putting the HTML back in is tedious so it’s going very slowly, lol

2. What is your total Ao3 word count?

152,149

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Two - Harry Potter and Supernatural. I have a couple of WIPs in other fandoms that I hope I’ll one day finish and post, and those include Captive Prince, Star Trek and Star Wars.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Oh jeeze oh boy *hyperventilates*

Original fandom life me ALWAYS responded to the comments. Then right around the time where I fell off the fandom boat and drowned in RL, someone made a comment to me (on Livejournal) that the only people who responded to comments on their fics were people who were trying to artificially inflate how popular their fic looked - these were the days before AO3 and kudos etc. I have to admit that got in my head a bit and I got very self-conscious about it and wondered if people thought that was what I was doing. Present fandom life me has very good intentions for responding to comments, then gets overwhelmed and doesn’t know what to say, then runs away and panics. That probably sounds nuts. I’m trying to do a better job of responding. I fucking LOVE getting comments, I got one today that made me smile so much and someone really took the time to write it. Long or short, I love them all and I am working on my response stage fright.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I have a Ginny/Pansy fic called Infelicitous Circumstances which is probably the angstiest thing I’ve ever written.

7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

No, I don’t enjoy crossovers as a reader or a writer (and that’s no slight against those who do, it’s just not my bag).

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not recently, I definitely remember getting ‘flamed’, as we used to say back in the olden days, when I was but a little fandom tadpole, but nothing that has lasted in my mind that was really hateful.

I do remember a funny comment I got on a Hermione/Ginny fic for an LJ fest called ‘Arse-A-Thon’ where the commenter gave me a brief lecture for not specifying in my fic that you should not put your fingers into an arse then vagina, or vice versa, without cleaning your hands thoroughly, or else you’ll get an infection, and impressionable people may read my fic about Hermione and Ginny playing with each others arseholes and use it as a how to guide, and the world would be rife with thrush, or something...it was so funny that I do still recall that one quite well.

I recently got a comment that I interpreted to be ‘I didn’t like Draco in this’ and the commenter came back to clarify that they did like the fic but Draco’s behaviour in it made them really annoyed, and I think that’s actually a compliment - I made them feel strong feelings!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, the infrequent kind, lol. If there’s a kink I’m likely to write, it’ll be watersports, but I don’t think I have any particularly kinky trends in my fic. I like to write smut with feelings but I often get carried away with the feelings and don’t spend enough time on the smut.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes but not for ages.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, although a good 15 years ago a friend and I did some planning but we never followed through.

12. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Harry/Draco. I’m in for life.

13. What was the first fandom you write for?

That I posted online, Harry Potter. That I wrote for myself at home as a kid? Star Wars! Or Star Trek, it was one or the other.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I think I really love Poppiholla the most, but I can’t say why. It just makes me feel good.

Hi! For the ask game - "If his lips are silent" :)

Hello anon. Thank-you very much for the ask - that's very kind of you. I wasn't entirely sure which ask game you were referring to - I've been kept away from Tumblr by boring rl things - so let me know if I've got the wrong one.

1. Which scene was your favourite to write in [title of fic]?

The scene in the station, when Jim is hungover, and realising that he probably spilled more to Harvey than he intended :D Harvey's fun to write - because he will scandalise people by saying inappropriate things, but also because he's shrewd, and thoughtful, with a sadness to him. There's a lot of nuance there, and I enjoy writing little details when it comes to him

2. Which part of If His Lips are Silent was hardest to write?

It was initially awkward to put together at all. I tend to think of lines or scenes that I like, instead of a plot. I had the idea of Jim in an old book shop in some decaying part of time, and the notion of him buying books there because the aesthetic of them unconsciously reminded him of Oswald - but that was it. Everything else had to be stitched together.

3. If you could change anything in If His Lips are Silent , what would it be?

It probably doesn't need the final paragraph. The final scene in the office - and the realisations Jim has along the way - makes things clear enough and leaves it on that 'things said and unsaid' theme nicely. I'm not sure now why I felt the need to add it. If I had to hazard a guess, it was probably because I liked the 'both hidden and exposed' bit in this sentence

'When he flicked the bedside lamp off, though, and lay in the dark, both hidden and exposed...'

Reading it back, though, I should have kept the sentence for something else and ditched the paragraph. It feels clunky.

4. Did you make an outline for If His Lips are Silent ? Did you stick to it?

Goodness - not at all :) I never really use outlines - my fics are probably too short to require them. A lot of my time is spent stitching random bits and pieces together. This one wasn't too bad on that front - there wasn't anything too complicated going on. Others were an absolute nightmare.

5. Which scenes did you cut, and which were added in If His Lips are Silent ?

I don't think anything was cut from this one - the idea itself was pretty short and sweet. The paragraph that helped me draw random scenes and details together, giving the fic a centre, was actually a stray paragraph that I'd just written and saved because I liked it:

"If you had asked him, Jim would not have known precisely how to define his relationship with Oswald Cobblepot. In fact, the question would be likely to make him frown, and clench his jaw, and tap his fingers impatiently on his desk. They were not colleagues. It was not as straightforward as snitch and contact, and it wasn’t crooked cop and gangster on the rise, either. Jim still fiercely resisted ‘friends’. Even so, it was not enemies. Even when there had been distance after Falcone’s removal, the space between them had crackled with rage and disappointment and betrayal – but never hatred. Never that."

6. Who was your favourite character to write in If His Lips are Silent ?

Harvey. He can see that the relationship between Jim and Oswald is a little odd, but maybe doesn't entirely twig until that last scene in the office. Harvey is much cleverer than everyone seems to think - he's watchful, and thoughtful, and has an understanding of frailty, and disappointment. It's nice to write someone who is slightly outside the central relationship, an observer.

7. Which came first, the title or the fic?

The fic always comes first for me. I always forget I need a title until Ao3 asks for it, and then spend ages trying to find something I like. I can't remember exactly how I came across the Freud quote, 'If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips', but I thought it worked well for Jim, who might stay tight-lipped, but gives himself away.

8. Which idea came to you first in If His Lips are Silent ?

Jim going into a dusty old book shop and buying books for Oswald. It's odd - I could see all the details of the shop, hear him opening the door. I wonder if writing fic for TV and film leads us to sort of 'see' scenes in that way?

9. What are some facts readers may not know about If His Lips are Silent ?

I think Barbara was originally going to be in it a little more, possibly via flashback if not in-person, but it wasn't working. She didn't really fit here

I think this is where my head canon decided that Gertrud definitely had episodes of mental illness, and that Oswald probably ended up in the role of caregiver quite often as a child.

end of an era

Oh my gosh anon, our waiting is OVER. Patiently, not so patiently yearning… wishing… hoping… dreaming… we have IT.

I gotta talk about it, because of course I do, ahhh! This will be long, sorry…

I got my hands on the OVA this morning, about half an hour before work. I watched it, yelled on Discord and then went to work, practically vibrating the whole day until I could go home and watch it again and write down my thoughts!

Before release I had seen what available video clips and screenshots we had, plus a summary given to me by a Japanese mutual, in somewhat limited English. I was unsure what to expect but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I might! I understand that there’s a lot one can be confused or perhaps even put off by in the OVA but. Well. I enjoy seeing a vulnerable Genos (if like 90 % of the fanfic I’ve written wasn’t an indication lol) so I just ate it all UP. And since I’ve written a fic about him getting amnesia specifically, I was very curious to see how off the mark I was.

I won’t give a proper summary, there’s a good one by Nysh for that. Nor the animation. JC Staff is what JC Staff is. I’m instead going to just… muse and compare and go wild with my own personal headcanons - in that regard, this OVA was excellent, because it does give some hints about what makes Genos tick. Hold on to your butts…

Oh, and need I say that there will be SPOILERS? XD

Before I wrote my own amnesia fic, I did some research. So, what is amnesia? Well, the popular TV show version is one thing, of course RL is another. There are several kinds of amnesia, with different causes and different treatments. But the two main categories are longterm memory loss, where you can’t recall past memories (often up to what caused the amnesia) and short term memory loss, where you have difficulty forming new memories. You can get one or both. In my fic, Genos deals with both. In the OVA, he appears to have longterm memory loss only, as he tries to find Fubuki again to help him defeat the monster (if only he knew Saitama would by far have been a better choice!), so he remembers her. Not to mention at the end, when he’s trying desperately to apologize…

There is no instant cure for amnesia. Emotional support is important, medication (if it’s caused by underlying disease, which it can be) and psychological therapy can also be useful. Saitama is doing the right thing in the OVA by remaining calm and trying to avoid agitating Genos or pushing him to remember.

After he first wakes up, Genos is very lost, he only remembers his name and that he’s a cyborg - but not why! It’s really heartbreaking when you think a little more about it - imagine waking up in a cyborg body and not remembering why/how that happened… We actually discussed that on Discord before we had the OVA, what if he wakes up and doesn’t remember… but nahh, that’d be too dark, right? APPARENTLY NOT.

I can’t explain why Genos would be so heavily influenced by media around him as he is. That’s just made up for the humour… but if I were to try to find an actual in-world explanation, hm… Well, we do know he can be a Drama Boy. We also know he tends to be very standoffish and reserved towards most people, which I think is related to his trauma, in a few ways (he doesn’t want to get close to people due to the risk of once again experiencing the pain of losing them - and spending four years more or less on your own during your late teenage years is not an ideal environment for learning how to socialize…). We also know that when Genos finds something or someone he considers important, he latches on. So you could see it as being part of that, perhaps. Lost and confused he looks for anything that would make some kind of sense, trying to find a sense of direction or idea on whom he might be.

What exactly did you forget? Your quest for revenge or the sale you briefly remember later? Knowing Genos, it could be either…

He reacts in confusion to his body telling him that there’s an elevated energy signature nearby - I LOVED this. I wonder if he saw it as a note on his HUD, or if it’s more ingrained, more subtle. The way he got antsy and couldn’t sit still… it’s like his proximity sensors act as an extra sense, like Spiderman’s spider sense…. An extra sense that’s probably saved his life on more than one occasion.

He takes off, feeling like it’s his body moving, not him. I don’t think his body has an separate will of its own, but I have always hc:ed that he probably has systems that can calculate stuff for him mid-fight - how to move, where to release his weapons and at what strength etc. A little helpful internal computer. It’s a LOT for one little monkey brain to keep track of, so it wouldn’t be crazy to think he has some help with that, I think. And here, I don’t think his body is truly moving on his own without him having any control of it… more like muscle memory? Like there are times where I think I’ve forgotten a password to my work computer if I’ve been away for a week but then I sit down and my fingers remember the typing motions on their own. I imagine it’s something like that. He doesn’t know what to do, so he’s going where his instincts tell him.

Fubuki, ah, ever the scheming one. I enjoyed her showing up and being casual at Sai’s place because that’s how I like to write her in my fics. You can see the exact second when she goes into Business Mode, playing hard to get to lure Genos closer. Too bad she didn’t consider just how much his personality changed too, came on way too strong in the end…

And!!! A couple of times Genos puts his hand in defense, without seeminly knowing why, or doing it intentionally really. Hmmmm where…. have I seen this before…

He jumped when a warning flashed at the corner of his vision. It was his proximity sensors going off, his HUD informed him. On instinct, he ducked down behind the nearest tree. He should go back. Kuseno would keep him safe. But if he moved, the stranger might see him too. Don’t turn your back on an enemy.

His sensors told him the direction and the general size of the approaching being, but he couldn’t actually see it between the tall trees. It was moving very fast. He ducked lower, ferns brushing softly against his cheek. On instinct, he held his palm out in front of him, open and pointed at whatever was approaching him.

I am SO glad that I called this in my fic, it’s a small detail but it adds a lot I think! Raising his palm as a threat is second nature to Genos, even when he doesn’t consciously know why he’s doing it…

It’s interesting that throughout, Genos keeps referring to himself as “boku”, which is usually reserved for a male who is younger than 16 (though there are exceptions - Amai Mask also uses it, probably as part of his charming idol persona). Usually Genos refers to himself as “ore”, which is mostly used by adult men, more informal and can be viewed as disrespectful, depending on circumstance (Genos is not typically respectful towards people, if they are not Kuseno or Saitama). Combined with how meek he is, man… Okay, ONE said that before the mad cyborg attack, Genos’ personality was about the same as it is now. So why is he so different? Well… I don’t think that’s too shocking, really. I mean, if you lost all your memories and sense of self, realized you were a cyborg for some reason???, ended up alone in a weird city, not knowing where you were or what to do, and suddenly people pointed at you asking you to fight a terrifying monster even though you have no idea how to fight… you’d probably be terrified too! I think we can assume his personality change is caused by his amnesia. But we can probably also assume that a Genos who never had his village attacked and never got involved with fighting/being a hero would not grow to be exactly the same as canon, anyway. He’d probably be a rude brat… but yeah. At least a few degrees less aggressive/ready to throw down!

Again with the hand!

A thought I had reading the exchange between the monster and Genos… it reads almost like how you might expect Genos’ meeting with the mad cyborg might have looked like, only in a sad, reverse kind of way. These lines - “I’m not ready yet… I’m not ready to die here… not yet!” - like, dude… that sounds exactly what might have gone through his head back then. Maybe the first inkling of his past returning to him at that second…

He feels something, remembers something, is shocked.. and it comes back… “I cannot win like this!”. And then he remembers Kuseno, and Saitama…

Once more, those lines together: “I’m not ready yet… I’m not ready to die here… not yet! I cannot win like this!”

We’ll probably never get it verified, but I find it very, very likely he used more or less these exact words, or something very similar, after meeting the mad cyborg.

Also, as much as I appreciate the closeness between Genos and Saitama, I AM glad that he remembered Kuseno first - he’s known Kuseno for four years, Saitama for less than 2 months, when this takes place. It’s only right and it fits very well with his character introduction too, where he thought he was dying and his last thought was an apology to Kuseno. A nice nod. I enjoyed that animation sequence a lot too!

When he remembers who he is, Genos feels so bad about his actions but he still can’t deny what he said before… Saitama’s face… omg… Bless them both.He brings Saitama wild/game meat - d'ya figure he bought it or, um… got it for free? I mean, that’s… exactly the kind of creature he fought… maybe he’s learnt Sensei’s ways…

And Saitama is happy he’s back. He cares about Genos! He likes him like he is, as intense and blunt and socially awkward as he is! What a sweet note to end the OVA on!

Dagur/Eret for sure! @taketheshot21 and I used to man that little rowboat alone. By now, I've heard others like them too after reading them as side ship in my story. They're just so unbelievably cute together! Always teasing and challenging, and at least in public, you'll hardly ever get a serious comment from them.

27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?

Neither, to be honest. Sometimes, I get these great epiphanies for titles or summaries and am in awe at my weird mind. But when that doesn't happen, I don't bother too much and just put in something generic.

28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?

Oh, I'd love every bit of fanart for any of my stories and already love the pieces of fanart I got so far. They are so lovely!

But if I could choose? I'd love to see a picture of 'For The Love Of A Princess' from their time of separation. Maybe from the ball, shortly before they get back together or where Astrid blacks out in the ball room. Or from the ride back to the castles, both on Hiccup's horse but careful not to touch each other and with the pain and longing all over their face. Or maybe from later when they're back together and hugging, tight and desperate. Like in the healers' tent after Eret got attacked. 🥰 Or really just any scene that people enjoyed or had strong feelings about.

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

Hmm, I got many lovely comments over time.

I'm always flustered when people are surprised that I'm not a native speaker. (Take this former English teacher who told me to pick another language because English clearly isn’t for me. And you too, family member who told me my English skils aren’t valid because I don’t use them professionally for work like they do (poorly).)

And I'm glad when people tell me that I keep them guessing and they can't predict what happens now. I try to not go the most obvious way, so if that works (not in a 'but that makes no sense!' way), I'm happy.

When Wooseok invited you over to his apartment for a movie night you imagined a quite night of spicy chicken feet, fried chicken and cuddling with your boyfriend underneath a large pile of blankets. You had no idea how anyone found enjoyment watching scary movies, yet you seemed to be the only one in the room who didn't.

You squirm at a particularly gory scene, shutting your eyes tightly as soon as the masked killer makes his appearance from the shadows. You should have seen it coming as the eerie piano music started to get louder and louder, indicating something spooky was about to happen. Wooseok looks at out of the corner of his eye, trying not to smile at how adorable you looked with your hands glued to your face (he didn't enjoy the fact knowing you were scared, but he couldn't help himself).

His arm wraps around you tightly, pulling your closer into his chest. He whispers, "Are you okay?"

You can only nod, unable to tear your eyes away from the screen despite how are you try.

However as soon as one of the characters made a wrong turn, for the nth time, you buried your face into your boyfriend's sweatshirt. The sound of his heartbeat was loud enough to distract you from the screen. You could follow along with the story line as his heart rate sped up and slowed over the next couple of scenes, telling you everything you needed to know.

You were finally starting to feel at peace until Dongpyo screams from his place on the floor, almost throwing the entire bowl of popcorn up into the air. And making you flinch almost completely off the couch.

Wooseok brushes his fingertips through your hair and whispers. "You can go hang out in my room until the movie is over, Y/N."

You shake your head. "No, I want to finish it."

"Are you sure?" he questions, and you know he is giving you that look. The look he gives you when you try to push yourself past your limits. Whether it's about studying or in this case, watching a horror movie.

You give him a reassuring smile. "I can do it."

He laces his fingertips into yours, squeezing them tightly but before he can offer you words of comfort a handful of popcorn ends up all over your laps.

"Can you two lovebirds keep it down? Some of us are trying to watch a movie." Seungyoun quips.

Wooseok knees his friend in the back. "It's not like I can hear anything over Dongpyo's screaming.

The younger boy turns around with his mouth open in disbelief. "I am not screaming."

You can't help but laugh as your boyfriend mimic's the pitch of Dongpyo's yelps, making the subject of his teasing pout, turning around in a huff to focus back on the screen.

By the time the movie finally ends, you are curled up in a ball. Your fingers are locked around your knees, pulling them tightly to your chest after you managed to watch the last 20 minutes without hiding. You were proud of yourself for making it through the film without hiding in Wooseok's room, not that anyone would have cared if you did.

"Should we watch another one?" Seungwoo asks, standing up to stretch his legs.

"I'm down!" Minhee smiles, trying to hold back a yawn. "I just don't think I can watch another scary movie."

The rest of the people in the room sigh in relief, making you feel at ease knowing you weren't the only one who was struggling to get through the last one.

Wooseok's hands were already on the remote, scrolling through a list of happier themed movies. He asks the group. "Does anyone care what I put on?"

They all shook their head, letting your boyfriend make the final decision. You watch as he navigates the search bar, typing in the title of your favorite anime. He smiles at you before clicking play, pressing a chaste kiss to your forehead as the melodic opening credits start to dance across the screen.

It didn't matter how many times you watched this movie, you were still just as enchanted the first time you watched it. The love story was bittersweet, making you ache in your chest until the main characters finally reunited in the last several scenes. You look around to see if anyone noticed you crying, but the boys seemed to have all slowly drifted to sleep. Each of them snoozing soundly, leaving just you and Wooseok awake.

"How are you feeling?" Wooseok checks in on you, making sure you weren't scared from the first movie of the night.

"I think I'll survive." you smile at him.

Your words make him nod. "You better."

"Did I miss it?" Dohyon asks as he wakes up with perfect timing.

"You missed the whole thing." you tell him, watching as the screen turns to black rolling credits.

Everyone around you starts to wake up, standing up from their places on the couch or the floor.

"Thanks for having us over!" Eunsang cheerfully hugs you goodbye, before joining the others at the door.

"Get home safely!" you call out as they tie their shoes, shuffling out one by one until the only people left are you and Wooseok.

You can hear your boyfriend sigh behind you. "They never clean up after themselves."

You turn around to look at the mess of empty popcorn bowls and take out containers, along with several empty candy wrappers.

"I can stay and help." you offer as you make your way towards the mess.

Wooseok stops you, but you wave him off, your hands already full of empty containers. You didn't mind, especially since this was the first chance the two of you had to be alone all night long. And even if you were spending time cleaning, at least it was together.

"Are you going to stay here tonight?" Wooseok asks, trying to mask the hopefulness in his voice.

You shake your head. "I don't think so. I didn't bring a change of clothes."

"Do you have to work tomorrow?" he asks as he starts to wash the popcorn bowls in the sink.

"Not until the afternoon."

"Will you be okay going home alone?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" you ask, unsure what he means. The two of you only lived a few blocks away from each other. You had timed it once and it only took 2 minutes and 43 seconds for you to tie your shoes, walk to Wooseok's and take off your shoes.

The sound of a kitchen cabinet makes you jump out of your skin, and you can't help the yelp that escapes your lips.

Wooseok turns around with a look on his face that proves the point he was trying to make. "Isn't your roommate out of town?"

You chew on your bottom lip. He was right, she was gone for the entire weekend. The thought of sleeping alone in an empty apartment made your skin crawl.

Wooseok puts the last of the dishes on the drying wrack and wipes his hand dry on a kitchen towel before making his way towards where you were standing. He places a gentle hand on your waist, pulling you into his chest. "Stay the night. I'll keep you safe."

"Can I b-worow a shi-rl?" you ask your boyfriend through teeth covered in toothpaste.

He looks at you over the black circular frames of his glasses. "Y/N, I didn't understand a word of that."

You dash into the bathroom, spitting out the rest of the toothpaste in your mouth before rinsing and placing the toothbrush next to Wooseok's.

"Can I borrow a t-shirt?" You repeat yourself, this time a little more clearly.

Wooseok smiles, nodding towards his closet. "Take your pick."

It doesn't take long before you find your favorite shirt of his. The worn out t-shirt he has had since his trainee days had softened over years of repeated use. Probably having been washed hundreds of times after long hours in the practice room. You loved it and made Wooseok promise to never get rid of it despite the fact that there was giant hole in the armpit.

Your boyfriend gently pats your side of the bed, encouraging you to occupy the empty space next to him. He takes off his glasses, setting his phone on the side table before joining you under the sheets.

"Can I turn the lights out?" he asks, reaching towards the light switch.

"Could we maybe turn the closet light on?" you ask with a tinge of embarrassment.

"Are you still scared?" Wooseok teases, but he gets out of bed anyway to turn on the light.

"It's just in case." you tell him as he slides back into bed, turning the rest of the lights off in one swift motion.

"Just in case." he repeats as he wraps his arms around you, pulling you into the safety of his chest and a night full of sweet dreams.

so yes, rl + da road trip! i hope it’s okay that i took a bit to answer this, bc i wanted to ruminate on it for a bit before typing it up. so as y’all know we refer to the summer between s1 and 2 as “cruel summer” (thank u tswift), and similarly we have a code name for the summer between s2 and 3 which is “summer of love.” this is admittedly mainly because of rl, but also because a majority of the characters are in such a better headspace this summer than they were last.

one facet of this summer is that around... july sometime, dylucasher decide they want to take a trip down to virginia beach (or the beaches in that general vicinity) because they want to check out a beach that isnt grey and cold like the ones close to them in ny, and because a trip before their last year of school together seems like a fun and Classic idea. originally they plan it for just the three of them, but somehow riley comes up and all of them agree -- especially dylan -- that it would be way more fun if she came along too. so they try to convince her to come along, which doesn’t take much convincing, it’s more so about figuring out how she’s going to get around cory because if he knew she wanted to go on a like week long trip with her boyfriend (who he doesn’t really trust) and two other boys he would probably have a heart attack.

you know, it would be like “you can’t go on an overnight trip with three boys!!!” “dad, you know dylan and asher. they’re gay. they’ve been dating for three years. they’re GAY. i do not think i’m at ALL at risk in that scenario???” fsdfSDKGDL

so riley devises a plan / cover story that involves like “going to stay with mom” for a few days, maybe a lie about staying over at isa’s or yindra’s for a couple days in there, you know, she lays out the whole lie and then bribes maya to go along with it and help cover her tracks (rl have very inverse influences on one another -- where riley sort of tames lucas and helps calm him and make him less feral, she develops a bit of a rebellious streak from him or just better identifies the nuances of which rules should be followed vs which were meant to be bent or broken..)

the good thing about this road trip is that it’s what truly cements riley’s friendship with dylan and asher. they’ve been toeing the line of friendship for like two years now (as riley said in cruel summer, she regretted not taking the time and establish a friendship with them in sophomore year before everything fell apart), and it’s kind of like it’s bound to happen. riley and asher takes a little more time to grow and develop just because of the kind of person asher is, but on this road trip dylan and riley just Click. like they were basically made to be best friends, dylan is the first person who kind intrinsically Gets riley and they match each other in terms of enthusiasm / personality / brightness. again, a friendship that’s just been Waiting to happen, and this trip really brings that to the forefront.

(on that note, i once joked that when dylan and riley get really into chatting about something and lucas zones out, they start sounding like the villagers in animal crossing to him. like if he stops paying attention for even a second suddenly dyley sound like this. and i stand by that claim.)

as for the trip itself, its not like i have the whole thing perfectly plotted or anything like that, more just... musings and ideas. oh and a playlist, of course i have a playlist. obviously they’re really good about swapping around drivers and sort of organizing their time since they only have a week, and i think it’s mainly funded by dylan’s youtube vlogger coin. asher helps and riley chips in her fair share, but dylan basically covers lucas because obviously he can’t pay but they all want him there. he makes up for this by driving the most even tho the other three insist its not a big deal.

when it comes to sharing space, the quartet of them are pretty good at it. obviously when they stop for the night they just share beds by couple, but it is interesting to think about how different these two relationships are in terms of like... you know, where they’re at. like its super easy for da to share a bed because they basically do that all the time now, but for rl breaking that boundary would be a kind of unspoken big deal and lucas would be so cautious about it. like they spend most of the summer in riley’s car (can’t hang out at her place with cory there and no one is going to lucas’s) and so theyve probably like fallen asleep together there once or twice and maybe napped ONCE at riley’s place when maya and cory were both gone in the 2.5 months they’ve been together, but it’s still... not the same. so at first lucas would be really nervous about it, but after the first couple of nights he’d relax and realize its really not that big a deal -- esp since riley seems pretty confident and comfortable with it. by the end of the week, lucas wakes up in the middle of the night and riley has cuddled up next to him and he’s like... okay MAYBE sharing a bed with someone makes points. perhaps.

one of the nights on the way down the coast, what truly breaks the ice for dylan and riley is that they break out a SMALL amount of alcohol and both get tipsy (which for them is just like. giddy and giggly and very chatty. they’re both happy drunks without a doubt). lucas and asher don’t indulge bc lucas doesn’t trust himself getting intoxicated and asher is just wary of it in general, but they figure dyley can do it as long as they’re both supervising. so dylan and riley talk A LOT that night and truly form their Kindred Spirit bond and also lucasher end up regretting letting them drink bc for like a half an hour dyley do this thing where they just pretend to share secrets with one another. like they theatrically whisper in one another’s ears and look at lucasher while they’re doing it and then start laughing and they’re literally not saying anything Important (like it’s probably like riley being like “psst... i think lucas is... hee hee... lucas is hot”) and then dylan cracking up and agreeing but bc lucasher don’t know what they’re saying they’re like ha ha very funny........... but y’all aren’t talking about us doe right. wait, what did you say. hold on --

a lot of the trip is also based around being in nature and the outdoors, since they don’t get to do much of that day-to-day in manhattan. considering one of their favorite spots to hang out as a group during senior year is at central park, they’re all definitely fresh air outdoorsy kind of people to a degree. so like, stopping at parks, going on hikes, and of course the beach itself. i made an instagram edit of one of said hikes when i was testing a template i made:

naturally, and i swear this happens at least once on a long road trip whether it is with family or friends or any combo of people, but you hit a point where you get irritable and start to get a little sick of one another. i think in this case that mainly starts between lucas and asher, because although they’re Best Friends i think lucas has a knack for finding ways of irritating him. and also lucas probably gets irritated by dylan’s high energy after too much time with no breaks, so he’s also snappy, and as they’re on the way back up to nyc people are spatting at one another or getting snippy over stupid things so riles is like. here’s an idea! how about we split up for the day when we get to philadelphia. this is an excellent idea and none of them are opposed, so when they arrive in philly, dylan and asher split off to go explore the city + historical sites.

what do riley and lucas do? well, riley takes lucas to meet her grandparents, of course.

at first lucas is like ummmmmmm no because he’s SUPER nervous about meeting her family -- the only family he’s met is cory and we know that’s... unideal, and eric, both of whom have a completely different perception of him bc of school and his behavioral record. he’s yet to meet topanga or auggie yet or anything like that -- but riley assures him that her grandparents are chill and she has no doubt she’ll like them. they’re also meeting lucas with a completely blank slate (i.e. no preconceived notions about him like those who work at aaa), so it’s not hard for lucas to make a good impression since he really is like... a good guy. not to mention no way is he snarky or deadpan in situations where he doesn’t feel comfortable or like he has the right lmao, so he’s on his BEST behavior around amy and alan.

the good thing is that alan himself kind of had a similar background and run on the wild side that lucas does (kind of like jack, altho jack was never as troubled as lucas), and so i think he would kind of... inherently Get him. like he’d strike up a conversation with him and at first lucas would be like omg why is this man speaking to me please i’m invisible pretend i’m not here... but after a bit he’d find it’s surprisingly easy to talk to alan. and they’d talk for like an hour and get on pretty well. meanwhile, amy is talking to riley and is like so... let me guess. cory does not know you’re traveling with your boyfriend???? and riley is like... perhaps. maybe don’t tell him? pretty please? and once amy convenes with alan and is like how is he and alan is all “he’s fine, we can approve,” then they agree not to rat riley out.

riley and lucas also climb up into the matthews tree house and take a look around and they comment on how strange it is that cory and eric once used to like, hang out in there and in that house and were once teenagers (lucas: be careful this is humanizing your father too much for me). and i’d think they’d sit up in the treehouse for a little bit and just talk and riley would talk about how nice it must’ve been to grow up in the suburbs like this, and she’s surprised when lucas agrees and he admits he fucking hates living in manhattan. and that kind of prompts this subtle internal thinking in both of them of like hmm well... maybe in the future when things are different and we can make our own rules maybe we’ll move out of the city and into a quieter life... they don’t say any of that out loud, but they’re both thinking it. and at the tail end of that conversation riley kisses lucas which turns into a Really Good Kiss... but then they’re interrupted by amy calling for them to come down for dinner and its kind of like lmao, they’re both a little bashful but in a casual silly way
