something that I think the “have fun and be yourself” discourse tends to miss is that it’s all very well saying do whatever you want and don’t worry about what people think because the people who judge you aren’t worth your time, but sometimes you choose to act normal because you have a task to do or you’re in a conversation that you care about, and having to stop in the middle for your interlocutor to say bewilderedly “but why did you do that in such a quirky way” would be wasting time and getting off topic. choosing to act normal to avoid that is not being inauthentic out of unhealthy fear of censure. it’s just prudence.

#spoken like someone who didn’t get made fun of by my parents as a child? yeah guilty. I have anxiety but I don’t think people hate me #but babes….I love being normal. I love slipping in and out of situations without leaving any ripples.#it’s like being a spy.#and honestly it’s a way of showing respect to people—recognizing that their time and understanding is as important as your self-expression.#there’s a time and a place for being weird and funny and remarkable #there is also a time and a place for politely following the script #or using clear ordinary language #do you need to feel guilty if this is a skill you have been unable to develop? no of course not.#but it IS a skill and a healthy society (and healthy families) would encourage young people to develop it #the one-sided emphasis on being yourself has utterly failed to keep people from feeling anxious #it has to be balanced by a confidence that you know how to handle yourself in situations!#in which cate tells stories

Ok so I have been stewing this crossover au in my brain nonstop for the past few days and. I am nothing if not committed to the bit, so. Volume cover redraws :)

So the idea is simple! Crossover reincarnation au where ASL is reborn in Spy x Family. They’re each born separately and none of them are born with the same names as their previous lives, and with no way of finding each other, they each find their own thing to do in the world.

Sabo, too used to the dangers of being a spy, eventually finds a cause to devote himself to again, in preventing war from engulfing the country he was reborn in. Ace, drawn to fire as he was in his previous life, used arson as a means to rob rich people for sustenance and survival, and is eventually scouted and hired by Garden as a fire specialist and assassin. And Luffy, though born in perhaps the poorest condition, grows up happily and takes whatever part time jobs he wants to do.

The thing about Sabo is that, as much as he seems like a young man of good repute and high standing within society, everyone in WISE knows that he is a massive nuisance. Nobody knew in the beginning how a child less than half the age of most of their veteran agents could have the same skills and knowledge in their profession. Sabo was— and still is— hyper competent, and by the time WISE figured out just how much of a menace to society he was, it was too late.

Ace forgot for the first few years of his new life that he wasn’t made of fire, and consequently, received multiple accidental burns. This did not deter him, however, from growing up to be a very skilled arsonist, well-practiced in every which way to start a dumpster fire or house fire. As a teenage he would use this often to draw attention as he robbed rich people blind. When he was caught, he was given an ultimatum by Garden: join them and receive payment for starting fires and causing problems under contract, or face the government and authorities for his crimes. Begrudgingly, he joined Garden, but eventually comes to appreciate that he can make substantial money in his element.

Luffy is Luffy. No telepathy or experimentation, no fancy schools, no gimmicks or secret identities. But he has still lived an extremely colorful life in this world, full of fascinating and kind individuals who have helped him grow up healthy and relatively happy. He goes where he is free, and he takes whatever part time jobs he wants in order to make the minimum he needs to survive.

Ace and Sabo find each other first, in their late teens, and neither of them realize that the other remembers their previous life, but both refuse to separate. (Sabo thinks Ace doesn’t remember, because Ace didn’t recognize him. Ace never saw Sabo grow up past 10, however, so he doesn’t recognize older Sabo immediately. By the time he does realize who exactly Sabo is, Sabo has backtracked and pretends to know Ace from a dream, or from somewhere else.)

Sabo’s attachment to Ace, predictably, causes problems between Sabo and WISE, but by then, Sabo is indispensable to the organization, and they make an exception for Sabo to be able to remain with Ace, so long as Ace never finds out what Sabo’s actual job is. Ace, on the other hand, hides his job because he doesn’t want his brother, who he has just found and who does not know Ace well enough yet, to know that he makes a living from killing people.

And they find Luffy sometime afterwards, prior to the beginning of the Spy x Family canon. Luffy figures out, not long after moving in with his brothers, both of his brothers’ secret occupations and the fact that both of them remember their past memories. He thinks it is common knowledge, however, and so he never brings it up.

I love how Twilight both severely underestimates and overestimates Bond's abilities and intelligence. Like one moment he's like

"this dog is so weird he's just a silly little dog guy he's not built for all this attacking stuff maybe it's too much for such a goofy little doggie. why is he grabbing people??? he must not understand me at all hoho. I guess he needs more training heehee"

and then he's like

In the universe of the film, there is ABSOLUTELY a contingent of fans that fervently ship Argylle/Wyatt and have the dominant ship on AO3 and trade elaborate fan theories about their hidden relationship and are convinced they’re meant to be endgame but the publishers won’t allow it. Of course, they go totally BALLISTIC when they learn they’re based on the author and her boyfriend.

this fandom doesn't get dabi tbh. Like outside of the aesthetic, if given half the chance, he would have become a workaholic to rival his dad. Like he'd complain about it more than Enji tho, but he'd still be out there working his ass off.

meet the demowoman! out of all of my female mercs, she is the one who is the most like her male counterpart. the two of them even have the same... ocular difficulties. although hers is on the opposite eye.

interestingly enough, her cheerful, loud, drunk nature is actually a ruse. the demowoman is a spy for the scottish government. after they covered up demoman's slip up with the location of the loch ness monster, the scottish government wanted her to keep an eye on him to make sure that he doesnt mess up again.

however, a wrench was quickly thrown into the demowoman's plans when she met the team's actual spy for the first time. she quickly realised that the spy was actually her adopted child from many decades ago. but like all of the other families that the spy had been in, she had run away from the demowoman as well. all of these years later, the two were reunited with the spy not recognizing her. how could she after "losing an eye", a new haircut, and different personality?

demowoman therefore has a decision to make. rat out the other demoman and destroy the team's composition while possibly revealing her identity to spy, which is something she doesnt want to do. or, she can remain quiet and spend more time with her adoptive daughter, even if its under disguise.
