Test Drives: Fenty Beauty & Farsáli
Tumblr media
I’m back with a new Test Drives article for May and this one has been a long time coming. I’ve been test driving these products for about a month and feel well equipped to give a thorough review. For today’s review I’ll be covering Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Foundation and Farsáli Unicorn Essence. Both items are products that I bought at Sephora just before bridal market. Anywho, let’s get started.
Tumblr media
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundation in shade 420
I’m certainly not the first to review Fenty Beauty’s game changer foundation, but I’m probably one of the last of the “beauty influencers” to touch it. To be honest, I took a while to get around to buying it for a number of reasons. First, the product was always out of stock whenever I stopped by Sephora. Two, there was so much (well deserved) hype around the brand, that for a while it was hard to tell what was truth and what was people band-wagoning.
And the second point was probably the bigger reason for why I put off testing out this product. I was pleased that Fenty raised the bar for representation and diversity in beauty. But so many of the reviews I read felt more like fan-girling with endless “yaaassss girls” than legit reviews on how the product held up over time. And that’s part of why I decided to not just try the foundation out on one day and write a review. Instead I wanted to see how this product wore over time, and write something thorough. But for the record, I really like this foundation and have been loyally wearing it for a month.
What I liked:
Medium to full coverage: This is ideal for me since I don’t wear full coverage. To give me the sheer, “my skin but better” effect I like, I can just apply the foundation lightly with a damp brush or sponge.
Tumblr media
I don’t look orange! This is a really big deal because often enough a lot of brands load up darker foundations with a ton of red pigment and it ends up making you look really orange. I have a lot of gold tones in my skin, so I don’t need help with that. And more importantly, as the day goes by, it doesn’t oxidize and change shades.
Tumblr media
Set it and forget it. Even if I don’t use a setting spray (which is often), this foundation doesn’t shift throughout the day. The pic above is of the makeup freshly applied while the cover story pic is me over the weekend at the end of the day just before I took my makeup off. And that middle pic is of me after racing around town during bridal market waiting for a show to start—and slightly sweaty. This foundation stays in place and truly does hold up to twelve plus hours of wear.
Weightless. I test out a lot of makeup and have tried my fair share of foundations. While plenty of products are lightweight and don’t feel like a heavy mask, a lot of them aren’t weightless. Now I can’t say how this would perform if you wore it as a full coverage foundation, but in its sheerest form, it’s a truly weightless experience.
What Could Be Better:
Nothing, I really did like everything. And considering that I don’t use a ton of product with every application, the price to value ratio is fantastic.
Farsáli Unicorn Essence
So, if you’ve ever watched an IG or Youtube makeup tutorial and saw someone slather their face in a glittery pink solution before applying makeup, this is that product. Once again, I was a tad skeptical about picking this product up mainly because most of the ways I saw people using it was ridiculously unrealistic. In real life, you’re not going to drip a full dropper’s worth of product on each cheek and your forehead. That’s all being done for video effect. In real life, the full size bottle is $54, so you won’t be wasting it just to be cute for the ‘gram.
I actually didn’t buy the $54 30ml bottle, I opted for the $22 10ml bottle. And I did that mainly because I have a ton of essence and primer options and I knew I wouldn’t work my way through 30ml in a year. Basically, Farsali’s Unicorn Essence pulls double duty as a makeup primer and a moisturizer.
What I Like:
I’m going to be 100% honest, I felt a lot about Farsáli’s Unicorn Essence the same way I did about Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist. It was nice, and it had great benefits, but it wasn’t groundbreaking when compared to some of the other essences and primers that I currently own. E.L.F.’s Antioxidant Booster and Kevyn Aucoin’s Neo-Elixir immediately come to mind.
That being said, I did like that the Unicorn Essence absorbs quickly into your skin and leaves you feeling moisturized and bouncy. And even though it does have a bit of a shimmer in it, it’s not too intense. So, if you wanted to, you could wear it solo and skip the makeup.
What Could Be Better
Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with this product. I just think it’s one of those things that’s become a hyped favorite on IG but might not be quite the game changer that your faves are claiming it is. So, I’m glad I bought the travel size instead of the full size.
My Verdict
Even though I went into this Test Drives article being a skeptic, I have to say that I do like both products. Do I think that both Fenty and Farsáli are so popular because of their hype? Yes. But in the case of Fenty Beauty, that foundation deserves the hype as it offers very real benefits for women of color who might have struggled to find the right color from other brands. In terms of Farsáli, I’m not saying it’s not the best, I just wasn’t blown away.
Check out more Test Drives here.

Recap of Ika’s IG Live February 1, 2019
Ika was in a hyper/happy mood for the most part. Talk then turned to differences between her and Dem and it was a very good, real look into them. She’s just truly a source of light.
She tried to do two lives, but the sound was really off, the speaker was clogged.
From the NYX event the other night, she got two gift bags. If she does a giveaway on her feed like she’s done in the past, she doesn’t get to choose the winner. But she wants to give away one of the bags on her IG live.  She said she hasn’t gone through the gift bag yet because yesterday she was a parent volunteer for Elijah’s school trip, and then last night she took Elijah to a Raptors game because his team played at half time.
One of the bags seems to have more in it, and she goes through that one first. Lots of eye shadow, some foundation, a ton of concealers, a bunch of lip stuff. At this event they had NYX giveaway bags and then they had stations with products, she didn’t know they were allowed to take the stuff that was out.
She drops a concealer and just stares at it all cute, goes to get it, “oop, I’m not wearing pants! I’ll get it later.”
She thinks giveaways like this just feel more sincere, this way it doesn’t feel like people are obligated to follow her, they’re here just because they are.
She says she is so thankful for the support, “ET Canada is almost scared to send anyone else in the states, because they don’t want to be dragged.” She mentions it means so much to her, and she just wants to give back a little bit, “this is literally the least I could do.” She wants to do more giveaways like this, “there’s no point in harboring them, I’m just going to give them away.”
She says she tried to grab another one, but some girl noted that she grabbed one and her boyfriend grabbed one, so she didn’t take a third lmao
They didn’t put out a youtube video, “sometimes there’s outside factors.” She mentions they should record some ahead of time so they can put them out if things come up. “I try so hard to be consistent, but sometimes it doesn’t work.”
Dem is at the gym.
Three people came up to her at the NYX event asking if she was “Dem and Ika”? (she was the only one they went up to). They recognized her from youtube. “I can’t tell you how cool and weird it is when people recognize me outside of BB.” She found it so funny, but it’s something she has to get used to, she loved it, “it’s a weird but good feeling.” She was grabbing wine, and she could tell these two girls were whispering things about her, she introduced herself to someone else and said her name, and once she did the two girls were like “omg it’s Ika!” and then one of them came up to her.
“That makes you feel so good. When it comes to youtube, it’s like your child. You build it, you grow it, you look at the analytics. You’re in charge of the channel and how well it’s supposed to do. But with BB, you’re being yourself, but I don’t feel as if I put in the work, the editors did it, I just reap the rewards. But with youtube, I’ll edit videos for 2-3 hours, it is a lot, a lot of work.”
She says that with youtube, especially if you’re doing it with someone else, it is so much more difficult, so much more fun, but so much more difficult. She says for example, they were supposed to put out a video on Wednesday, but they had a difference in opinion on the quality of content. Ika would rather put out quality content or nothing, Dem would rather put out something than nothing. “Dem’s eye for aesthetics, to me, is not what it is to me.” She didn’t realize on youtube the lighting really changes, and she really cares. “It’s a guy thing.” About the channel, “You guys have to be on the same page about literally everything.” Ika wants to make sure the entire video looks good and is consistent with their brand.
Dem always tells her she’s always beautiful, but Ika doesn’t want to put certain things out. “We’re thinking the same in that we agree on the content, the idea, but what we disagree on is more aesthetics and how she looks.” But then if he says something that’s a little extra, it will put her in a bad mood. “It’s more fun, but more hard.” “We’ve never had more disagreements than we’ve had about youtube. Not like fighting, breaking up. But just disagreements. It’s fine tuning that.” She says she’s not at the stage yet where they can film and pretend everything is okay on film. By the time she feels better now, the lighting is all different. She has looked up if other couples are going through this, but no one talks about it because people then worry about the relationship, she suggested they do a video about that.
“I wouldn’t want to do it alone. It’s more difficult, but more rewarding and more fun.” She notes there is going to be creative differences no matter who you are working with and on what project, whether it’s youtube or anything else.
When her and Dem started youtube, they were using their cell phones, so she doesn’t think she’s picky. They use daylight and her ring light. She does want better lighting so they can film whenever, even if there isn’t daylight. And it’s also tough because they have different skin colors so the lighting doesn’t always look good for both of them, “he’s full on Caucasian! He soaks up all the light, he’s like a nightlight!”
Ika says that Dem is very responsible, when it comes to money and financial management, she talks to him about big purchases, etc. He is conservative, but he doesn’t cheap out on experiences. They’ll go to a parade for example, he has no problem spending a ton of money to go there and experience all the nice things. But then he would say to pack sandwiches to save money. But that other stuff is also part of the experience for her.
In LA, Dem wanted to stay extra days in LA, Ika is looking at nice hotels, and Dem is looking at cheap airbnbs, she wants to meet in the middle. ”This man will find the one that is so ugly.” But it’s part of the experience for her, “but he always wins this argument when it comes to money. He comes off more responsible, because he has more money than I do.” She says they showed up to the Airbnb and it looked like a crime scene. “He said ‘it looked better in the pictures.’ I could have told you that.” The door was broken, you couldn’t lock it. “He acts like we’re so poor.” She said she didn’t want to stay there, “he goes, ‘it’s not ideal.’” They change places because of the door. She told him she would look for her own airbnb, he could stay there. “When I’m in LA, I want to feel like a fucking star!” She notes that everything is paid for when they go to LA, so the only things they’re paying for are the extra days.
“So can you imagine those two people filming a youtube video?”
“We always make decisions as a team, even if he’s paying for something, or I’m paying for something, we make decisions together.” So she said she wanted box lights, she looked them up, was watching videos on them, she didn’t want him doing it cause he’d take forever researching. He suggested they go to Home Depot, got the cheapest garage lights, tried them out at home, then “he decided they weren’t feasible.” Dem doesn’t see that as an issue cause no money was wasted, but time was.
Yesterday she was out all day with Elijah then went to a basketball game, and Elijah is out with a friend today. Dem said when she was out, he was doing research and found other lights. “He ordered LED lights, which are more expensive than box lights. When they come in, I’ll let you know how it goes. We could have had the box lights a week ago if I did what I wanted.”
Dem just walked in. “Hi, Demetres.” Her tone totally changes as if she got busted lol
Dem brought her coconut water. Ika: “Did you get a whole box?” Dem: “…no.” Ika: “That’s something he’ll do, he’ll hide snacks.” Dem: “If I don’t, you’ll drink it all in two days.”
Ika: “Someone just walked in interrupting out live.” Dem: “No, keep going. Live your best life.” They start laughing.

Road Trippin’ is today’s #bcmusicmakeup theme hosted by @caitlynpostsmakeup and myself 🚗🎶 For today’s song I chose the Maceo Plex remix of Chelsea Wolfe’s “The Warden” 😍 My hubs introduced the song to me in a DJ set he mixed a couple years back. That set is our go-to for driving in the car, it’s so good! “The Warden” isn’t necessarily a sing along track lol but there’s something about the chilled out tune that takes me places. If you’re a nervous driver (or backseat driver like me 🤣) chilled out tunes are a must in the car to avoid arguing lollll and this one’s great! 👌 I had a hard time figuring out what look I wanted to do so I’m taking my inspo from a look that beautiful Maria @livinglavidaglam shared with us last week. Go check her out—you’ll love her! 💗 Here’s what’s all on my face 👇 BASE • {PR via @ipsy } @smashboxcosmetics Oil & Shine Control Primer • @rarebeauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation in 250W • {PR via @octoly } @beccacosmetics Ultimate Coverage Longwear Concealer in Birch • {PR via @ipsy } @ciatelondon Extraordinary Translucent Setting Powder CHEEKS • @yensabeauty Sunlit Glow Silk Bronzing Base • @kosas Color &Light Creme in Velvet Melon (High Intensity) EYES • @alamarcosmetics Pero Primero, Primer • {PR via @ipsy } @hudabeautyshop Mauve Obsessions Palette • {PR via @ipsy } @bobbibrown Smokey Eye Mascara • @jordanacosmetics Easy Liner for Eyes in Brown Suede • @kvdveganbeauty Dagger Tattoo Liner BROWS • @itcosmetics Brow Power in Universal Taupe LIPS • @nudestix Gel Color Lip & Cheek Balm in Pulse Oops moment: I created the look in advance and completely forgot to get footage of the look so I don’t think I’ll have a reel up later to showcase the song 🙈 Swipe to listen to a sample, if you’re curious. Do you have a YouTube channel? I would love to watch a fenty beauty review!
Hello! I don’t have a YT account but I can tell you my thoughts on it anyway!
Overall, I think the collection is okay. I’m very picky about the things I put on my face, and some of the products I got I had to return because I didn’t love them. If I’m going to use something everyday I want to love it.
When the collection came out I bought the lipgloss, the MatchStick highlighter in Sinamon, the makeup sponge, the foundation in shade 210, the primer, and the freestyle highlighter duo in Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby. Out of all of these I ended up returning the sponge and I may or may not return the foundation and the MatchStick highlighter. I’ll break down what I liked and didn’t like for each product:
LipglossWhat I liked: the shade is a beautiful dusty rose with gold shimmer, and I’m a weak bitch for that kinda color. It smells really nice and reminds me of something from my childhood but I can’t remember exactly what it is.
What I didn’t like: it’s a little heavy on the lips and I prefer lip products to feel undetectable. After a few hours the color faded away and it just looked like my lips were really really moisturized and shiny.
MatchStick in SinamonWhat I liked: this was an impulse purchase as I never wear any kind of blush or highlighter on my cheeks because I feel like it’ll just emphasize my texture. It’s a gorgeous apricot color and I think it’d look great on medium to dark skin tones.
What I didn’t like: I’m not a fan of dragging a product that comes in a stick or tube across my skin. There’s a bit of resistance/pull to this one, but I’ve heard from temptalia on IG that there are some better MatchSticks in the collection.
FoundationWhat I liked: I’m on the fence on this one, I’m not sure if I’m going to return it or not. It’s definitely a soft matte finish since water is its first ingredient. It covered my discoloration really well and lasted all day.
What I didn’t like: I’m not sure the shade is right for me. In artificial light it looks perfect and seamless but in natural light it looks orange. I know this isn’t supposed to oxidize and the only time I wore it all over my face was when I went to the beach. I have oily skin and the skin around my nose looked very shiny after a few hours.
PrimerWhat I liked: this is the only product from her line that I love. Seriously, this primer is amazing. I returned my Hourglass primer that I’ve used for two years because I love this one so much. It’s cheaper than the Hourglass one and it has more product in it too. It’s slightly scented but it’s not a bad or overbearing scent. I really hate primers that have that silicon texture, like benefit’s porefessional one, but this has a soft texture to it, kinda like lotion. And it makes my makeup last ALL day AND it blurs my pores. I don’t know what kinda shit she put in this primer but it’s magical.
Makeup spongeWhat I liked: this was another impulse purchase. I like that it’s cheaper than the original beauty blender but I use a knockoff one from Walmart anyway so
What I didn’t like: I didn’t use this with the foundation, only my concealer. I don’t know which one is at fault but it didn’t spread my concealer at all. Most of the concealer got sucked up by the sponge and I was left with a patchy mess. I don’t know if it has something to do with the fact that the sponge is latex free but 🤷🏻‍♀️
Highlighter duoWhat I liked: beautiful colors and packaging. I use this as an eyeshadow and it’s very subtle.
What I didn’t like: I wish it was more pigmented, especially since it’s marketed as a highlighter and I feel like highlighters should have a lot of payoff. I think Rihanna was going for a subtler look with these highlighter duos though.
Overall, the collection had it’s ups and downs. I wish it was better quality in product texture and how it feels and interacts with skin. I’m not too disappointed though just because more often than not celebrity owned/endorsed beauty lines are kinda meh. I’m definitely happy about the primer and the 40 shades of foundation, but everything else didn’t live up to my expectations. Still love my bad bitch RihRih tho.

'Tis the season for sunblock , salt spray , fresh cuts , and, oh yeah, the most minimal of makeup looks. Of course, you're plenty welcome to wear whatever makeup aesthetic floats your boat any time of the year, but for us, our goal is to achieve the ultimate no-makeup makeup look à la It girls like Kendall Jenner , Emily Ratajkowski , Chrissy Teigen , Hailey Bieber , the Hadid sisters . That said, even though achieving a minimal makeup look sounds simple enough (and looks barely detectable on IG), any artist behind said looks will tell you they require heftier strategy, work, and products than you might think. Thus, we tapped one of the best makeup celebrity makeup artists in the business, Mary Phillips , to give us the 411 on the signature no-makeup makeup look she personally gifts all the gorgeous peeps listed above with. And yes, there are some tips and misconceptions about no-makeup makeup she wants you to know. For starters, skincare is important, but it's not everything. "I think a big misconception about achieving a minimal makeup look is that people just do their skin and nothing else ," she tells us right off the bat. "Makeup is required, and it's important to include eyes, lips, and cheeks so the look is still balanced ." According to Phillips, less is still definitely more when it comes to the products you're piling (or not piling) on, but strategically adding pops of color all over the face is key in order to give your face dimension and to achieve that covetable "sculpted" makeup MO models like Jenner and Bieber have made their trademark. (Oh, and using multipurpose products is an easy way to achieve a monochromatic, minimal look with the least amount of formulas.) "Take time to experiment with products and see what makes you feel the most confident ," Phillips adds. "Using quality products that you are comfortable with will help you achieve a no-makeup makeup look with ease ." Want more? Here, Phillips shares her six best tips for nailing a perfect no-makeup makeup look along with her simple, 10-step process below. Keep scrolling! "Healthy, hydrated skin is the best place to start for any makeup look, especially a minimal, no-makeup makeup look," Phillips explains first and foremost. "I'm a firm believer in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and drinking plenty of water along with following a skincare regimen to keep skin looking and feeling its best. If your skin is in good shape, you'll need less coverage and your products will go on so much more smoothly." For those who experience redness or are easily prone to sensitivity and irritation, Phillips recommends applying La Mer's The Concentrate ($370) before following it up with a light layer of the brand's cult-loved Crème de La Mer ($175) for optimal nourishment and moisture. "Use a foundation with buildable coverage so you can apply to areas that need more coverage without overdoing the whole face," warns Phillips.  She personally swears by La Mer's Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation ($120) since you can easily buff it into the skin for a lightweight, natural, and radiant finish. "For a seamless no-makeup makeup look, I always recommend using cream-based products that will adhere and blend more naturally into the skin," explains Phillips. "The Nudestix Nudies formula has a great texture for adding natural dimension to the face, and layering both matte and sheen finishes is a great way to achieve a fresh, dimensional glow. Nudestix Nudies Matte Blush & Bronze in Sunkissed ($32) and Nudies Allover Face Color Bronze + Glow in Hey, Honey ($32) is one of my favorite combinations." When you're choosing your makeup and color palette, Phillips recommends choosing natural colors that will complement your skin tone to slightly enhance and define your features. She prefers a "soft and smudgy" application technique, which looks subtler and more believable than hard, more obviously defined lines. Powder—you either love it or hate it, but if you're the former and insist on using it within your makeup routine, Phillips recommends using it sparingly and only on the specific areas you get oily or want more matte. This way, she says, your natural skin can shine through, which is a key fixture of the perfect no-makeup makeup moment. She loves La Mer's Sheer Pressed Powder for effortlessly blurring away imperfections and unwanted shine. "To keep your makeup looking fresh, lightly touch up throughout the day and refresh with a hydrating mist to keep skin dewy and rejuvenated." "I always start a no-makeup makeup application by warming up Crème de La Mer in my hands and applying it to both the face and décolletage." "I then buff the La Mer The Luminous Lifting Cushion Foundation ($120) into the skin with the La Mer Powder Brush. It's so big and dense it's easier to apply, leaving the skin with an airbrushed look while using less product." "For extra coverage, I next apply concealer under the eyes, around the nostrils, and on top of any blemishes that may need extra coverage." "To create a soft contour, I like to apply a cream-based blush-and-bronzing stick with a brush underneath the cheekbones, along the jawline, and around the temples and forehead for warmth and dimension." "Followed by applying this stick with my fingers to highlight areas for a golden, dewy glow!" "Then, I lightly dust sheer pressed powder to any place I don't want shine." "For brows, I'll add definition and fill in any sparse areas with this brow pencil from Senna Cosmetics." "Next, I love to use this long-wearing eye shadow pencil from Nudestix along the lash line to define the eyes. The Taupe shade is my go-to for an effortless, no-makeup makeup look." "Followed with a light coat of Armani's Eyes to Kill Mascara." "Last but not least, I like to use a tinted balm formula on lips for sheer color and hydration. This one is always in my purse!" Test Drives: Kevyn Aucoin, Veil Cosmetics & Bare Minerals
Tumblr media
It’s been a bit since my last Test Drives article and that’s mainly because I’ve been on the road and working like crazy. So, before NYBFW rolls in next week and dominates my life and feeds for the next month, I wanted to get a beauty review out to you guys. In today’s post, I’m highlighting a few products that I received in the last few weeks that I’ve finally had the chance to try. In this Test Drives article, everything was gifted by the brand. I’ll be reviewing concealer from Veil Cosmetics, a gloss/shimmer from Kevyn Aucoin and a foundation from Bare Minerals. Let’s get to it!
Tumblr media
Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face
If you follow me on IG, you know that a few weeks ago the team at Kevyn Aucoin sent me their Glass Glow for face and lips. The colors (featured above from l to r) are Crystal Clear, Spectrum Bronze, and Prism Rose. These are the face tubes which are 1 fluid ounce (30ml) each. So, the concept is, if you love that dewy or rather glossy makeup look, this can give it to you with a hint of shimmer. Glass Glow is a hybrid highlighter and moisturizer product.
What I Like I DO NOT use this product as part of a makeup routine. Full stop—more on why below. I like this product but as a makeup alternative because I use it to mix with my IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Gel facial moisturizer to give myself a bit of a shimmer if I’m going bare faced. So, if you were to catch me on a regular day where I’m home being a mom and have no plans to go to an event or out to eat with the hubs, then yeah, I’m using this product. I also took it with me to Miami late last month and mixed it with my body lotion when I was wearing my bikini so that I could give myself a bronzish look without actually using a body bronzer.
What could be better I was not a fan of this product for makeup. Part of it is, I don’t need help looking shiny. Even though my skin is on the dry side, often when I wear foundation it starts to shine as the day goes by. So, I was hoping this would be like Buxom’s Divine Goddess Gel Cream highlight—but it wasn’t. It was too “glowy” and the shimmer is really sheer. So instead, I just looked greasy.
Veil Cosmetics Complexion Fix in 4G Tan
Tumblr media
I’m always on the hunt for a great concealer that doesn’t cake up or fade out throughout the day. Veil Cosmetics’ Complexion Fix promises to hide bags, dark circles, uneven skin tone, and won’t settle into wrinkles or fine lines.
What I like This is a great concealer, I just got it a few days ago and used it this past week with great results. It’s long lasting and even when you apply, it doesn’t settle into fine lines. I’m also a fan of the applicator featured above. While it takes a bit of twisting to get product to first appear in the brush, it allows for more precise placement. And if you prefer brushes to sponges, you could feasibly use the brush to blend the concealer into your skin. However I used a separate Artis oval brush. I also love how it truly does hide your bags. The very top pic in this post is indoor light with my ring light while the one at the end of this post by my makeup details is outside on my balcony. You can’t see my under eye bags!
What could be better Nothing, this was a winner hands down.
Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Hydrating Foundation Stick SPF 25 in Sienna
Tumblr media
Bare Minerals really doesn’t need an introduction when it comes to foundations. But now they’ve created a foundation stick—which I’ve gotten into more and more since I reviewed that Wet ‘n Wild foundation stick a few months ago. Bare Minerals promises that with consistent use, this stick will improve your skin’s overall hydration.
What I like As opposed to the Bare Minerals concealer I reviewed earlier this year, this is a great product in terms of blendability and ease of use. Rather than using this as a full face foundation, I’ve been using it to contour (more on that below). Like the brand promises, it is hydrating. Although, I would have to wonder if—like my concern with Wet ‘n Wild’s version—this could verge on greasy as the weather gets warmer.
What could be better Ok so, in the pictures in this post, I’m not wearing this shade. Sienna is about one or two shades darker than my winter color and even after a trip to Miami, I haven’t gotten dark enough to wear Sienna. So, I think this will most likely be a summer option once we’re in July or August. This isn’t the fault of the brand as I received this through Influenster and in the qualifier quiz there were tons of pictures to choose from when I selected this color.
My Verdict
This is one of those times where I genuinely liked everything that I reviewed. In a perfect world, I’d get more beauty use out of Kevyn Aucoin’s Glass Glow and I would have picked the right shade for Bare Minerals, but they’re both still great products that I’ve gotten a lot of use out of so far.

And P.S. check out that lippie because it’s a top secret red shade that’s coming soon from yours truly! ^_^

A few months ago, Inglot Cosmetics launched in Jamaica at Fontana Pharmacy. For those of you unfamiliar with Inglot, it is a makeup brand that launched over 30 years ago, specializing in high quality cosmetics with bold colours. Founded by Polish chemist Wojciech Inglot, their products are no available on six continents and in almost 700 locations worldwide. Constantly evolving with makeup trends, they have a wide range of products from lipsticks to foundations to nail polish – you can find it all. Their freedom system allows you to fit all your fave products into reusable palettes consisting of eyeshadows, blushes, powders, lipsticks, concealers, eyebrow products and even cream perfumes! Their price point is mid-range at most so they won’t break your pockets. You can find out more about the brand here.
As a makeup artist, I am no stranger to Inglot. When in SoFlo, I frequent their Aventura Mall location to stock up on my holy grail products such as Duraline and their renown AMC Gel Eyeliner. I was super excited when I met with representatives from Fontana Pharmacy here in Jamaica to be a part of their Inglot Launch. I was even more elated to discover that the prices would be the same across the board as they cost online or from any other Inglot retailers. This meant I could stock up on my must-haves without having to take a trip outside the country or spend extra money on shipping.
To celebrate the launch, myself and several other makeup artists and beauty gurus were invited to do live feeds using or discussing our favourite Inglot products. I teamed up with Fontana’s own MUA (and one of my fave gals) Keneisha Bryan (@iamkend0ll) to do a “Get Ready With Me” on Fontana’s IG Live story. We got to try out all the products to decide what worked for our looks and skin tones.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Fontana was also kind enough to gift me with a goodie bag of Inglot cosmetics to try out, so of course I had to show you guys what I got and give my thoughts on the products I am familiar with. I also picked up a few items which I added to the bag to try out.
Tumblr media
So here’s the breakdown of what I got…
Tumblr media
Makeup Brush 31T ($15)
This angled brush is amazing. I had actually purchased one prior to getting my goodie bag and I am so grateful for a second one. It is so thin and sharp that you can get the perfect wing when using gel eyeliner. I also use it to fill in my eyebrows with my brow pomade because it makes thin, perfect hair-like strokes. Such a must-have!
AMC Eyeliner Gel #77 ($16)
This is my all-time favourite gel eyeliner – hands down! I use nothing else, so I was grateful for a back-up. This liner is waterproof, which makes it great for the waterline as well as the upper lash-line. It is the blackest black liner I have ever used and it dries perfectly matte. It’s super creamy too, making application easy peasy.
AMC Eyeliner Gel #102 ($16)
I used this when I did the IG Live GRWM and I knew I had to own it! This is the perfect turquoise gel liner; looks great on the upper and lower lash-lines for a pop of colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used both gel liners to create this look!
Duraline ($13)
As previously mentioned, this is one of those products that I cannot do without. Duraline is a multi-purpose clear liquid that can be used to intensify any powder product and make it an easy to apply, water-resistant liquid. I use it with pigments and loose shadows or with loose highlighters to intensify my inner corner highlight. However, my favourite way to use this stuff is with my gel eyeliners and ABH Dipbrow Pomade. If you find that your pomade or gel product is drying out, you can add a drop of this to bring it back to life. I cannot live without this product.
Lash Enhancer Mascara ($16)
This super black mascara has a cone-shaped wand that gets into ever crevice of your lashes adding thickness and volume. I like to use this on no-makeup days because it gives me that lash extension look without lash extensions. Speaking of, this mascara is actually suitable for use on lash extensions, so you already know…
HD Perfect Coverup Foundation ($36)
This is actually a new product carried by Fontana that I purchased a couple of weeks ago. It claims to be a full coverage concealer that lasts long and prevents excess shine. I won’t go too deep into this as I’ll have a full review up next week but I’m in the shade #93.
Sparkling Dust FEB #3 ($17)
This was another product I tried and loved during the GRWM, so I was excited to see it in my goodie bag. It is an illuminator for the face, eyes and body. It’s designed to be applied directly on the eyes, or mixed with lip gloss, nail enamel, foundation, moisturizer or duraline to add some dazzle to your look. #3 is a deep, bronzey gold that is beautiful for medium to dark skin tones.
Tumblr media
That glow though!
Makeup Fixer (50ml) ($10)
Let me start out by saying that the price for the full-sized and travel sized sprays are really affordable for a non-drugstore brand. This spray is free of alcohol and parabens that promises to make your makeup long-lasting. I like that it is unscented and alcohol free so it won’t be harsh on your skin (especially for sensitive skin), however I’ve only used it once and I’m still unsure as to if my makeup lasted any longer than usual. I’ll get back to you on that one.
High Gloss Lip Oil 01 ($18)
This is pretty pricey for a lip oil, I’m not gonna lie. However, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been reaching for this daily. It moisturizes my lips (thanks to the alpine apple seed oil, cherry kernel oil, apricot kernel oil, argon oil, jojoba oi, shea butter and vitamin E) without making me look/feel like I just ate fried chicken. It adds the right amount of shine – no greasy mess. I like that it’s clear and unscented, so I can wear it when I’m makeup-free, and I can also use it while doing my makeup to prep my lips for matte lipstick application.
HD Lip Tint Matte #12 ($18)
Despite being told that I can rock the hell out of a red lip, it’s not a colour a reach for often. However, I do love this blue based red, especially now that the holidays are upon us! While it claims to be a full coverage, long-lasting matte lipstick, it needs more than one coat to be opaque on my lips but it does last for quite some time with minimal transfer. The cherry scent is a bit overpowering at first for me but thankfully that goes away once it dries.
I am so glad to see a local pharmacy carry a higher-end cosmetics brand, especially since Fontana is my favourite pharmacy (you’re bound to buck me up at the Kingston store on a daily basis). While their full range of products isn’t currently available, Fontana is continuously expanding – especially with all the space their new cosmetics department has to offer. Fontana currently carries their best sellers including eye products, highlighters, lipsticks, etc. and as previously mentioned, everything is priced in the JMD equivalent of their USD prices. Be sure to stop by and check out the testers when you can!

Test Drives: Tatcha, IT Cosmetics & Sephora Collection
Tumblr media
It’s been a bit since I’ve written a Test Drives article! So, let’s kick off March with a few great finds that I made in the last few weeks. I’m always on the hunt for great dupes, must have moisturizers and effective foundations, and that’s exactly what I’m covering in today’s post. I’ll be reviewing Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mist, IT Cosmetics’ newest release Confidence in a Foundation, and Sephora Collection’s Golden Hour highlight. As usual, I’ll outline whether an item was purchased or gifted. So let’s get to it!
Tumblr media
Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist (purchased)
I picked up this travel friendly version at Sephora while I was in San Francisco because I felt like my skin was getting dry while I was out one day. The premise is that this can help to instantly infuse the skin with moisture thanks to the mist’s natural botanical ingredients. To use, simply shake the bottle, hold it two to three inches from your face and mist. This can be used under makeup or as a refresh throughout the day.
What I liked
This is a truly hydrating spray which evaporates fairly quickly. That’s not to say that you don’t get the moisturizing benefits. It’s more like saying it doesn’t take forever for the mist to absorb into the skin. While this mist has a more natural/essential oil style scent, it’s not offensive. Of course, the small size makes this ideal for traveling.
What could be better
This isn’t so much a complaint as an honest observation. Most people who review this product rave about how it instantly improves the condition of their skin. While I like this product and definitely use it fairly regularly, I can’t say that I get better results using this either as a refresh or pre-makeup step as opposed to some of my other facial mists or even oils that I typically use.
Sephora Collection Golden Hour Highlight in Twilight (purchased)
Tumblr media
This is yet another item I picked up while I was in SF. I can honestly say it was an impulse buy because I saw the purple pan on the gondola and instantly thought it could be a dupe for my personal favorite highlighter, Kevyn Aucoin’s Neo-Limelight in Ibiza.
What I liked
I was right, this is most definitely a dupe for Kevyn Aucoin. In the pic above, you can see that I have two swatches on my wrist. The top swipe is from the upper half of Kevyn Aucoin’s Ibiza pan on the left, and the bottom swipe is from Sephora’s pan on the right. If you say that you can tell a difference on my arm (not in the pan because clearly they look different in the pan), you’re full of it! I’ve always been a fan of Sephora’s powders, and this is no different. This particular highlight is finely milled which means you get minimal fallout. More importantly, you have great color pigmentation with this and don’t need to use a lot of product to get strong color payoff.
And something in particular that I actually prefer with Sephora’s Golden Hour is that the shimmer is uniform rather than an obvious gradient. As much as I love Kevyn Aucoin’s Ibiza, as you see in the pic above, I clearly don’t use the paler half of the pan, mainly because that paler portion can end up making me look frosty. So, technically speaking, half of the pan is wasted on me. In contrast, since Sephora’s version is more uniform, I can use the entire pan—making this a very cost effective product.
What could be better:
Nothing, I really like this product and didn’t find any issues with it.
IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Foundation in Rich Warm (gifted)
Tumblr media
If you followed my IG stories or checked out my IG Beauty Events Highlight, you know that last week I attended IT Cosmetics’ Spring product launch. Those of us who came out went home with a goodie bag full of skincare products and more importantly, a 10-bottle sampling of their newest color cosmetics launch, Confidence in a Foundation, as well as an additional bottle that we received at their shade match station during the event. These 10 shades are considered their most popular hues that testers gravitated towards during the R&D stage.  This particular foundation comes in 48 hues, with plenty of options for darker skin tones. Confidence in a Foundation is meant to be full coverage with a velvet matte finish.
If you notice that I have 12 rather than 11 bottles (10 + 1 for my shade) in this pic, that’s because when I was at the event, the lighting wasn’t the best and I felt like I was falling between shades. So the MUA who helped me test colors sent me home with two shades.
What I like:
I’m really glad that IT has finally come out with a foundation that’s truly accessible for all skin tones. As much as I’ve appreciated some of their other CC creams, their color options were usually fairly limited with only two or three options for the #teambrownskin or #teamdarkskin crowd. Their previous brown hues would always have a bit too much orange or red in them, meaning that I’d have to limit their wear until the summer when I’m tan and can better match the shades. But this time, I have a shade that matches my “late Fall to Spring” shade.
That aside, I also like that even though this is a full coverage it didn’t feel heavy. Full disclosure, I typically avoid full coverage foundations because I don’t need that level of coverage. Normally I find this coverage level to be too intense, like I’m wearing a mask. That definitely wasn’t the case with Confidence in a Foundation. However to make sure that it didn’t feel or look too heavy, I applied the foundation sparingly and blended with a damp brush.
Today wasn’t my first time trying this product as I’ve probably rocked it a time or two before. I’ve currently been wearing it for just about six hours and it’s still wearing fairly well. More importantly, it plays well with other products too. So, if you’re layering via contour or highlight, it doesn’t slide around or fade away throughout the day.
What could be better:
So, as much as I think this product is great, there is one thing that is somewhat questionable to me. IT Cosmetics claims that Confidence in a Foundation offers a velvet matte finish. No. As compared to their Matte CC+ Cream which is a favorite of mine in warmer weather, this is not matte. Even during the time it took for me to apply my makeup (about 15 - 20 min), this foundation never “dried down” to a soft matte finish like the CC cream did. And I applied my foundation first since I wasn’t doing eye shadow today. At 6 hours out right now, I definitely have shine and would need to touch up with my setting powder to mute that sheen. Mind you, I wasn’t doing anything intense today unless you consider driving to LaGuardia to pick up the hubby and going to dinner afterwards a hefty day of activities.
My Verdict:
Honestly, everything was a winner for me this time. While I did question a few of the claims of Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mist and IT Cosmetics’ Confidence in a Foundation, they’re both still great products that I would use.

Test Drives: Tarte, e.l.f., NYX, NudeStix & Profusion
Tumblr media
So, over the weekend I attended a family wedding and I had an awesome makeup look for it. Unfortunately, we were running behind so I didn’t have a chance to take a pic of my makeup or my new hair color (not the ombre wig from my last beauty post). And since today was a fairly low key day for me, I decided to recreate the look and show off a new hair color. Well, I didn’t do a complete recreation of my wedding guest makeup but I decided to rock a look inspired by something I saw on IG from Jordan Liberty. I’m a pretty big fan of him because I feel like his philosophy is “skin is in”. He barely uses foundation on his models and he doesn’t do any of the over the top IG type makeup tricks, which is really refreshing.
I say “inspired” rather than “recreate” because what I did is definitely a reverse of his and halfway through I decided to do some things differently so this is a loose translation. More importantly, today I finally had some time to test out a few things that have been piling up in my makeup arsenal. We’ll be discussing Tarte’s Shape Tape Contour Concealer, e.l.f. Cosmetics’ Correct & Set Eye Powder, NudeStix’s Nudies, NYX Cosmetics’ Strobe of Genius Illuminating Palette, and Profusion Cosmetics’ Highlight & Contour Palette. As usual, I’ll let you know what I bought and what was gifted to me by the brand, and full makeup details will be at the end.

Tarte Cosmetics Shape Tape Concealer in Tan-Deep (purchased)
So, pretty much everyone loves this concealer and I can see why. It has serious staying power and is perfect for contouring because it doesn’t crease and will last all day. It blends/buffs away very easily and a little can go a long way. It’s a liquid cream so it goes where you need it to and the applicator allows for precision placement as well. I genuinely do like how this does a pretty good job of hiding my under eye bags and dark circles (even when I forgot to use my orange color corrector).
My one gripe with Shape Tape is why in the love of all that’s holy did the product development team at Tarte think that this thing needed to be loaded with cheap fragrance. I really have to wonder what this product smelled like before the fragrance is added that caused everyone who smelled it to think it was too offensive for the product to hit the shelves without it. Although it doesn’t stop me from wanting to use it, I just find adding fragrance to color cosmetics to be strange and very unnecessary.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Correct & Set Eye Powder in Banana/Deep Tone (purchased)
This is e.l.f.’s answer to a flashback-free setting powder that can also double for baking. It’s meant to be a budget friendly accessible option for those who can’t get Ben Nye’s Banana Powder, Sacha Cosmetics’ Buttercup Powder or even Laura Mercier’s setting powder. It’s actually available in three shades to try to meet the needs of multiple skin tones. While I think this is an honorable endeavor, I’m not crazy about this powder.
First, it’s not really yellow but more of a peach-ish shade. And for me, yellow really is preferred if I’m going to prevent the dreaded flashback. This is important because when I bought this in the store last week, the floor assistant made a point of telling me that I could use this for baking. But it’s been my experience as a clearly brown girl, that if I use a setting powder that’s too pale, I get flashback. Second, this is an incredibly small container. At $4, I understand not getting something massive. But it’s so small that if you’re going to bake and use a sponge to apply that powder, good luck getting a sponge with enough surface area to fit into that jar. Third, it left a slight ashen cast to my skin where I applied it (under eyes, bridge of nose, chin & forehead) which was visible under my ring light. So, halfway through taking pics with my ring light, I went back and completely touched up my face with my Laura Mercier setting powder to correct that problem.

Profusion Highlight & Contour Palette (gifted)
About a month ago I finally swatched this palette for review. I liked it, but I remember at the time complaining about how I felt these weren’t richly pigmented. Well I stand corrected! Today I used the Profusion palette in place of my Kevyn Aucoin Flame or Sahara highlight. Profusion is very pigmented, and a little can go a long way. I used the color Baked on my cheekbones, bridge of my nose, chin, cupid’s bow and brow bone. It’s a great, warm gold tone which is in my opinion ideal for warmer skin tones or brown skin girls.
NYX Cosmetics Strobe of Genius Palette (gifted)
Earlier this year, I swatched these colors from NYX and was on the fence about whether I liked them or not. My concern was that the purple shade was a tad pale, and it turns out I was right. It’s not really ideal for warmer skin tones like mine. I ended up looking a bit ashen when I initially applied and I had to buff quite a bit to blend it out so it wasn’t so stark. Although I went on NYX’s site and saw that they also have Strobe of Genius in a warm palette, so that might create better results for people with warmer tones.
NudeStix Nudies in Naughty ‘n Spice (gifted)
I got this from The Makeup Show earlier this year and decided to give it a try. Originally, I was thinking of using this as a lip color because it’s meant to be an all over stick that can double as blush, eye shadow or a lip color. But the dusty rose hue was a bit too stark against the bold blue eye I created. So, for this particular look, it was a no go. I ended up using NYX’s Lip Lingerie in Teddy because it offered a better neutral for me. But I like that this stick is very creamy and even though it offers a matte payoff, it’s also pretty hydrating.
Winners & Losers:
This time e.l.f. and NYX came up short because of too-pale formulations. While I hate the fact that Tarte thinks chemical fragrances are a good idea, I do love the Shape Tape and will be keeping it in my core beauty arsenal. Profusion made me take back my original impression so I’m a believer in them now. And on a day where I’m doing a less colorful eye, I’ll definitely test the NudeStix Nudies again in the hopes that it’ll work with a more neutral eye.

Last week, when Meghan Markle announced her baby royal's new name (Archie Harrison), accompanied by a photo shoot at Windsor Castle's St. George's Hall, all I could see was her makeup. Sure, the precious just-born infant was cute and all (really!), but the Duchess of Sussex's subtly smoky brown eye and dewy skin was all this 27-year-old unmarried woman could see. One can always trust Markle to deliver on natural, glowy makeup looks that define her features without looking too, well, makeup-y —and as someone whose instinct is to wear bright products like taxi cab–yellow eye shadow  and orange lipstick on an average weekday, I envy her restraint. So when a recent opportunity to receive a makeup touch-up by celebrity makeup artist and Dior brand ambassador Daniel Martin crossed my desk, I thought, Oh, goodie: I’ll get this makeup master to show me how to put my playful face colors aside in favor of Markle’s more refined aesthetic. Keep scrolling to see how Martin used just six products to re-create this chic Megan Markle makeup look in less than 10 minutes. Access to Daniel Martin came courtesy of a fun Dior makeup pop-up happening on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The pop-up is in honor of the brand's makeup artist–inspired Backstage collection (featuring truly essential products experts always want in their kits backstage, like customizable palettes and a huge range of foundations). The line is launching three new products: their Amber Neutrals Eye Palette, Glow Glitz highlighter Palette, and Face and Body Primer. The latter two products won't hit shelves until June, but they're available for preview at the pop-up, which is open to the public and happening until May 19, so if you live in L.A., you should totally go. (Buy a $45 ticket, and you'll get tips and touch-ups from the makeup artists there, as well as an exclusive product from the collection.) Martin paid a visit to the pop-up last Friday, and I swung in to ask him for my Meghan Markle look. Here's how he re-created it… Defined eyes, dewy skin, and a plump "your-lips-but-better" pout were the features I was aiming for in this Meghan Markle makeup look. I was instructed to come into my appointment with most of my base makeup already on, so beforehand, I applied my go-to foundation, concealer, powder, blush, and brow product: Koh Gen Do's holy-grail Aqua Foundation ($70), Kat Von D's Lock-It Concealer Crème ($27), Sisley's new Blur Expert Matte Finishing Powder Veil ($95), Make's Matte Finish Powder Blush in Bisque ($25), and Dior's Diorshow Pump 'n' Brow Squeezable Brow Mascara ($27), which I am newly obsessed with for big, fluffy, natural-looking brows. Meghan Markle's eye look used more coffee-colored browns and blacks, but Martin thought the deep purples and plummy brown in this palette of blendable powders would better suit my green eye color. Instead of pencil eyeliner, he used a fine, flat-tipped brush to stamp the dark brown shade against my upper lash line. (I have lash extensions, so there was no need for mascara.) Martin's favorite product in the entire Backstage collection is the soon-to-be-launched "glitz" version of the brand's existing glow palette. He applied the champagne shade in the top right corner to the high points of my face (cheekbones, nose, cupid's bow, brow bone) as well as to the center of my eyelids to make them shimmer ever so slightly. As someone whose go-to lip product is matte and coral, if you had told me I was going to actively enjoy how a shimmery purple gloss looked against my warm skin tone, I would have called you batty. I was perplexed and delighted to discover how futuristic, fun, and flattering I found the finish of this minty-tasting, non-sticky gloss. Perhaps it was because the super-hydrating formula really did have serious plumping action. Where my face makeup needed a little touching up (like under my eyes and on a few blemishes), Martin applied some of the brand's new primer with his fingers. I'm not one for slippery mattifying primers (I honestly just don't understand them), but this hydrating glycerin-and–shea butter formula was super lightweight and had a palpable blurring, glow-inducing effect. On top of the primer, Martin added just a light layer of this buildable liquid foundation, which I was impressed to find felt like nothing on the skin. He used shade 2Warm on me (there are 40 options in all). A dusting of powder contour in this palette's darkest shade under my cheekbones and in the sockets of my eyes added just enough definition to make my cheekbones look higher and my eyes bigger. (Martin didn't apply more blush since I was already wearing plenty.) What’s another celebrity look you’d like a top makeup artist to re-create on our editors?
