the whole "cats choose their owners" thing is really funny to me because ivy very much did NOT choose me. she was a slightly dim-witted and very rambunctious feral kitten, and that combination led to her getting herself stuck inside an old chipmunk nest halfway down the steep bank of the creek by my parents' house. from there she proceeded to scream her head off until both my mom and i came out to see what on earth was making all that racket, then we excavated her out of that hole like a sad little potato. she was grateful for the rescue, but definitely NOT grateful for the ensuing flea baths and conversion to indoor cat life at my apartment, which she reminds me of regularly. ivy i'm sorry for saving you from an early death due to predation/disease/cars, but can you stop biting me every day of my life please

So- we all agree that MK will at some point fight his friends.
But what do you think would cause an actual fight to break out? I can imagine a CONFRONTATION. Arguing, a small scale brawl or scuffle. A full blown, all out, cataclysmic battle however? HOW???
Yeah, MK did lash out at Macaque when he was pretending to be Wukong. MK was definitely upset, but the thing that made him want to straight up fight Wukong was Macaque antagonizing him and hitting him where it hurts.
Mei and the real Wukong wouldn’t do that. They love MK too much. And vice versa. I just can‘t imagine them fighting eachother while fully aware.
Do you think it would be a loss of control situation? That MK‘s too powerful to contain? Brainwashing 2.0? Golden Circlet? Someone pretending to be MK and leaving the real one to deal with thr consequences? I‘m just listing all the different tropes at this point oof
Or do you have a specific scenario in mind that you think could realistically happen or hope for?
So! I think it'll be a combination of a loss of control, good ol' fashioned manipulation, and MK learning something that pushes him over the edge.
Like, you know in 4x13 where MK says things that distinctly don't feel like MK—"We'll alright then", "Oh there's nothing mindless about me friend"—and he's smiling and very much unhinged, and it's all kinda scary? I feel like there's gonna be a lot more of that next season, all aligning with MK and his fate vs what he actually wants. Like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subodhi: “Who or what you are, even I do not know the answer—but of one thing, I am certain: fate has plans for you! Great plans, or foul? Time will tell.” MK: "I- I can't be! I'm just MK!" Subodhi: "The Monkie Kid?" MK: *Gasps*
(4x06 Show Me the Monster)
-
"Great plans, or foul?" - "Remind me how this 'game' is supposed to convince me I'm not destined to turn into an evil monkey demon thing again? Cause every option I pick takes me to this same screen!" - Aka, despite your choices the final outcome is inevitable. MK wants to be MK, but he's also the Monkie Kid, and he can't separate himself from whatever he is—i.e. MK is gonna have to reconcile the different parts of himself, including the parts of himself he refuses to acknowledge.
The conclusion Macaque helps MK come to at the end of s4 is that no one can decide who MK is for him ("Only you get to decide who you are kiddo."), and what I LOVE to point out is that the person who decided who MK is, who he will be, was in fact himself—or at least the curse version of himself:
(*sigh* this wasn't supposed to be super long and then it was. The rest under the cut!)
Curse MK: “Haha, seriously? You still think we’re just some, noodle delivery guy? You can’t remember where we came from, and we got ALL this power, and you never once thought, WHY US? What are we? What is our purpose?”
-
Tumblr media
Curse MK: “You can’t escape it, this thing, whatever you are, embrace it. Embrace your destiny.”
-
Tumblr media
Curse MK: "You can see it, can't you? This is your fate. Your friends will turn on you, seeing you for the monster you will become. They will destroy you, harbinger of chaos."
(4x07 Pitiful Creatures)
-
It's this interesting mess, where it seems like MK is spiraling towards becoming something else, something he doesn't want to become. So let's add a little check mark next to the "loss of control" box for why MK is fighting his friends next season—I'm not sure he'll be entirely "himself" if you catch my drift (maybe a kinda Samadhi Fire Mei situation, similar to the way she loses control).
Next point: good ol' fashioned manipulation.
So, just like LBD we got another puppet master on our hands, the person who was pulling the strings and released Azure.
AKA whoever the fuck this guy is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hooded Figure: "There will of course be an inquiry into how the scroll of memory was stolen in the first place, and what is to be done now that the Jade Emperor has been dethroned. The universe is perilously close to tipping into chaos. If it comes to light that any of this party were involved, you can believe the consequences will be dire—but only a fraction of the price compared to what shall come to pass should you succeed."
(4x14 Better Than We Found It)
-
The thing about this guy who wanted Azure to become the Jade Emperor and lose control—perhaps they wanted the Jade Emperor's power without a host so they could use it for their own purposes?—is that we don't know what their plan is, but we can assume it's going to include MK ("Great plans or foul?", MK as a "harbinger of chaos" with this mystery person trying to tip the universe into chaos, etc.—I'd argue they're the next stand in for destiny)
Which gets me to my point: our hooded figure is going to manipulate MK the same way they manipulated Azure, and the same way LBD manipulated MK before, which means gettin' all up inside MK's head. Making him doubt both himself and Monkey King and his friends.
And well, people trying to turn MK against Wukong has had a track record of MK absolutely losing his shit and going into Monkey form before (which admittedly may be the very thing the hooded figure wants):
1.) The very first time MK glitches into Monkey Form is after the curse insists that "We're just like Wukong—a fraud! A trickster! Destructive! Why would our legacy be any different? Actually, no no- the chaos and destruction we'll bring upon the world will make Wukong's past look like nothing."
Tumblr media
2.) Then, first time MK fully enters monkey form is after the curse insists that "It's just like the Lady Bone Demon said—all you'll ever do is cause pain and suffering!", which in itself is tied to the words Mei says to Wukong in 3x10 "Don't you see you're hurting the people who care about you the most?" which is ALSO tied to 4x08 with the reason MK decides to run off to begin with—he's afraid of hurting the people he cares about (just like Wukong) and that perhaps he really is only destined to cause pain and suffering.
Tumblr media
3.) After 4x07 MK goes into his Monkey Form again in 4x08, but this time it's after Azure tried to destroy MK's faith in Wukong ("Monkey King's a hero he wouldn't just-" "You saw it with your own eyes! His betrayal his brutality, he took the only friends I had from me."). MK really starts to lose it after he learns Azure won't release Wukong from the scroll ("I won't let you take Monkey King away from me again!").
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.) Next, in 4x09, MK starts glitching into Monkey Form after Macaque insults Wukong ("Or, he was just doing his usual Wukong thing and being a lazy peach eating idiot—ignoring all the worlds problems."). It's also directly after MK wonders why Wukong stayed on flower fruit mountain all those years: "You think Monkey King ever felt like this? Maybe that's why he stayed up on this mountain, just having a good time with you guys. You know cause- cause he knew he'd be out of the way where he couldn't hurt anyone he cared about."
Tumblr media
5.) Next instance of Monkey Form isn't until 4x13, but I'd argue it's the most relevant of the bunch. For the entire special MK hadn't flickered into Monkey Form once, but he does after Azure starts insulting his loyalty to Wukong: ""After all Sun Wukong has put you through, how much he has let you down, you would STILL meet your fate trying to protect him? He doesn't deserve such loyalty, yet you insist on learning the hard way, just as I did. I should have never trusted the Monkey King! The false sage, equal to NOTHING!"
Tumblr media
And then after this we have the scariest instances of Monkey MK I ever did see:
Tumblr media
MK is ripe to be manipulated in all the wrong ways, specifically around his relationship with Monkey King—and perhaps even his friends if the situation gets bad enough (though I would imagine it being something more like MK trying to leave to protect them [again] and the gang not letting him) (Other side note: there are literally 5 examples of MK going into Monkey Form because of how his relationship/view of Wukong is being called into question, all at the end of s4. That is so many).
I think a la 2x05 and 4x07 MK will also have his perception of himself pushed to it's limits via our new antagonist. So rather than Wukong or Mei antagonizing MK for him to lash out, I'd say our puppet master will be the one to antagonize MK. To push him towards whatever they need MK to be for their plans.
And with that, I'm checking off box number 2 "good ol' fashioned manipulation".
Now onto point number 3, MK learning info that pushes him over the edge (which will be helped by point number 2 and lead to point number 1, FULL CIRCLE BABY).
So the special definitely set up the fact that there's more both MK and the audience don't know about Wukong's past, particularly around Macaque:
Tumblr media
Macaque: "Every choice has consequences kid, for someone." MK: "Okay come on man! What happened between you two, for realzies!"
Tumblr media
MK: "Seriously! Come on man I need answers!"
(4x11 A Lifetime of Mistakes)
-
Oh sweet MK, answers you will receive! They just won't be the answers you want. (The fact that MK is questioning Wukong's past at all, along with the curse saying "We're just like Wukong" as proof they were destructive, leads me to believe that uh, maybe your boy is having some doubts! One of the things MK is specifically upset at Azure about is that the Lion attempted to "turn him against his own mentor". That's all gonna lead somewhere)
Which, the implication is clear:
Tumblr media
For undoubtedly some important reason, Wukong had to either kill Macaque or bring him to deaths door. But, MK over there who refused to abandon or hurt Mei even when she was going to burn away reality, who refused to abandon his friends even if it might risk unleashing the curse into the world, might not understand the nuances (hi "good guy" V "bad guy" binary mentality) of whatever happened between Wukong and Macaque.
Lego Monkie Kid is a show where plot points and arcs line up—the fact that MK's faith in Wukong is being questioned, the origin of SWK and Macaque's falling-out is just around the corner, and MK losing control is a very likely possibility, it all means I would be surprised if it everything wasn't going to be acknowledged at around the same time. All these things will build off of one another, and MK is going to spiral HARD (and SWK probably will too. Sorry boys)
The Macaque and SWK backstory alone would be enough I think, or WHATEVER other Wukong past plot points they want to introduce, but we also have the matter of MK's origins—his purpose. Why he was created and why he exists (again that who MK wants to be VS what fate has in store for him, and acknowledging the different parts of himself). MK, without any real knowledge of what he is, already believed that he was destined to bring chaos. Say, MK were to learn that he was either created for such a purpose or was something that caused chaos before (hello EAMK), this would absolutely RUIN MK's perception of himself.
So then combining all of these different problems and the culmination of MK's series long crippling self-doubt/identity arc, we're like, fucked? Honestly I can't imagine MK not having a full blown, all out, cataclysmic battle and breakdown.
There have also been certain things building up from s2 that MK never really talked about with Wukong. MK was willing to punch Wukong in 2x07 (the og "hey MK your mentor kinda sucks" episode). He was clearly hurt by Wukong's decision to leave in s2, Wukong proceeded to lie all through s3, and after Monkey King apologizes to MK in 3x14, he sort of brushes it off:
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "I know I can never make it up to you. Honestly, I- I never thought I'd live as long as I have let alone be someone's mentor—turns out I'm not very good at it. I guess what I'm trying to say is...I'm sorry MK. For all of it." MK: "It's okay—I can always get another bowl of noodles."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sun Wukong: "Wha! No! Not the noodles! Ugh! I mean, I'm sorry for being a bad mentor and making you clean up after my mess!" MK: "I know—sometimes I just play dumb to lighten the mood."
(3x14 Destiny Fulfilled) (Crying look at that face full of love. Oh my god. Fuck. Fuck me. How dare I write a meta on why these two are going to fight)
-
To me, this scene reeks of MK going "oh thank god things can go back to normal", and then trying to sweep everything under the rug without actually acknowledging or processing anything. He does something similar in 4x11, wanting to brush past Wukong's mistakes and rush to SWK's "path of the good guy" and "good life choices" so that he can move on.
When it comes down to it, MK doesn't want to have any issues with Wukong, but unfortunately there are very much issues. Wukong has tried his best to make amends and be better for MK, but MK isn't letting himself heal. He's running from himself, and he wants to pretend things are much simpler than they are.
And, once MK is forced to come face to face with how complex and messy both himself and Wukong are? I am expecting that kid to break and an all out fight to emerge. SWK V MK, Mentor V Student, Monkey King V Monkey Kid.
But, because Wukong is Wukong, he's not going to be able to go all out against his student (he couldn't even go all out against Macaque or Ne Zha), which, with how powerful MK is, that's not going to go well. That's where the gang steps in—they're going to have to try and put a stop to MK, and get him to see reason, to come back to himself. "Mend the fracture between [him]self and Wukong" if you will. Perhaps even Samadhi Fire Part 3 if we're lucky.
Or at least that's how I imagine it could go down!

References to the Odyssey in owl odyssey
Spoilers for the episode Owl Odyssey!
When I saw the episode Owl Odyssey I was taken by surprise since there were a lot of references to the actual odyssey! It's a bit of a funny coincidence since recently I've been obsessed with the musical "Epic" which is based on the Odyssey. So I'm going to be analyzing all the references I caught in Owl Odyssey. I put the "keep reading" since this post ended up super long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The episode starts with Aviva, Martin, Chris, and Koki being on the spaceship Aviva made. After the Kratt bros accidently start the ship it flies off and ends up landing in the ocean which leaves Jimmy Z all alone at the Tortuga. This starts the Wild Kratts "Odyssey" as they now have to try to find their way home without any technology except Aviva's creature power disk maker and the miniaturizer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout the episode we can see that more and more animals move in, starting with the grizzly bear and they end up kicking Jimmy Z out of the Tortuga. I think the animals moving in to the Tortuga are meant to represent Antinous and the other suitors that move in to Odysseus' castle while he is trying to get home. And I guess it would make Jimmy Z Penelope since he is left to wait for the team to get back home while the creatures take over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While they are on their way back home in the hot air balloon Aviva converted the ship into, Chris hears the call of some burrowing owls and is ready to jump out of the ship to get to them! I believe this is a reference to the Sirens who tried to lure Odysseus and his crew out to sea with their songs.
According to https://www.awesomestories.com/asset/view/Odysseus-and-the-Sirens
"Therefore pass these Sirens by, and stop your men's ears with wax that none of them may hear; but if you like you can listen yourself, for you may get the men to bind you as you stand upright on a cross-piece half way up the mast, and they must lash the rope's ends to the mast itself, that you may have the pleasure of listening. If you beg and pray the men to unloose you, then they must bind you faster. (See Samuel Butler’s translation of The Odyssey, Book XII, online via MIT.)"
Chris ends up asking Martin to help him out of the ropes so he can see the owls and Martin almost ends up almost helping him out of the Ropes until the crew miniaturizes Martin since they have to get home!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While miniaturized, Martin ends up meeting a Barn Owl and since nobody can hear the barn Owl he ends up naming the barn owl "Nobody". "Nobody" tries to attack Martin but Martin gets away and when he tries to tell the wild kratts crew that he was attacked they don't understand them since he keeps saying "Nobody" attacked him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is similar to when Odysseus is on the island with the cyclops but since he doesn't want to tell the cyclops his name he just says his name is "Nobody". When the Cyclops betrays him and attacks Odysseus, Odysseus hurts the cyclops and the cyclops calls out to their neighbors for help but the neighbors think the cyclops has gone crazy since the cyclops keeps saying he was attacked by "Nobody". Also, Chris just scooting over to check out who "Nobody" is and to see the chaos cracks me up lol.
Tumblr media
Finally, the owl is often associated with the goddess Athena and seen as a symbol of intelligence and are effective hunters. Athena was the goddess of strategy, wisdom and warfare. Athena was also a patron of Odysseus in the Odyssey.
According to classicalwisdom.com
"Athena was a virgin warrior goddess, and was widely worshipped in the Greek world. The goddess was the embodiment also of strategy, wisdom, warfare and technical skills. Athena played a major role in the works of Homer, and is often shown as the patron of heroes such as Odysseus.
Athena was long associated with the owl. " https://classicalwisdom.com/culture/the-owl-of-athena-symbol-of-wisdom/
"Of the two Homeric poems, Athena plays a much larger role in the Odyssey. She essentially acts as the protector of Odysseus. At various points across Odysseus’ journey, it is Athena’s help and guidance that allow the cunning hero to escape to safety. Moreover, it is Athena’s request to Zeus that allows Odysseus to leave the island of Circe."
At the end of the episode, Chris uses his creature power suit to turn into an owl, fly the crew back home, and kick out all of the creatures from the tortuga. Aviva is inspired after seeing all kinds of different owls throughout their journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soo that's all, 10/10 episode. :D It really lived up to the name "Owl Odyssey"! :D

What is your opinion on the themes of escapism/escape from reality in the 4koa manga? (obvious example: percival/ not so obvious: Arthur and Merlin) Personally, I'm loving it. Also, what is your opinion about the female cast? (mainly gawain
yeah it's SUPER intriguing!!!! i think it's key to contextualize those themes with the other recurring theme of defying fate, too. i'm really enjoying how some of the themes are similar to the original manga, but 4kota feels like it flipped them on their head a bit and it's exploring untouched angles with new ideas.
i'm a huge fan of the female cast, i think nakaba always tends to have a really solid female cast especially compared to other shounen lol. anne is definitely my favorite of the girls and might be my favorite new character next to lancelot, i REALLY adore her and i want to see her succeed!!!!! i loooove isolde and her personality a lot (although she needs to move on fr...), and guinevere is super intriguing to me.
gawain is another one of my favorites, i'm so curious about her background and family life. in what way is she blood related to arthur? the only brother of arthur's that we know about is kay, and he's not blood related. so what could be going on with that? she's easy to theorize about. the fear she seems to have of her father (arthur mentioning her disappointing him made gawain spiral bad) and the way she age regresses when she's under immense stress is something i'm excited to learn more about. also canon butch lesbian?? it's so cool.
her arrogance is much more fun and interesting compared to escanor, for example, who bored me to death at best and pissed me off incredibly as worst. her arrogance also seems more... justified as a character trait, in a way? the way she overcompensates and how it comes from her fear of failure feels a lot stronger. possibly even fear of her father, but it definitely feels like there's a lot of expectations weighing her down and it leads to lashing out, and breaking down when she fails to meet these expectations. i only make this comparison since the narrative itself compares the two (which she hates, interestingly enough. i wonder who in the family compares these two?)

I just came back from watching Earth's venting session with Sun, and boy, this sent my mind on overdrive-
First of all, the majority is pretty much a character analysis, and I am all here for it!
There's something so intriguing, hearing about Lunar through other people's eyes, y'know?
There's something so painfully human in the way they are talked about, and the way Sun and Earth talk about it. It feels like I'm listening in to a conversation not meant for me.
Earth is the therapist of the group, and prefers dealing with her issues on her own, something Sun does similarly, though his coping mechanism aren't usually this healthy. He generally tends to stay in the background. Seeing both of them talk like that feels a little awkward, Sun not being used to being the voice of reason when it comes to a specific topic like this, and Earth ranting about something she'd usually try to work out herself.
Though Lunar isn't physically present, they still are the topic of discussion, and I'm not even sure where to start, or how to properly express my emotions about it!
Lunar is so human, it's honestly messing with me! Someone who doesn't want help, whether it's because they don't want to admit they have problems, or because they are scared. Someone who isn't easily understood. Someone who has an "Eye for an eye" mentality. Someone who is so incredibly flawed, it's breathtaking, in a good way!
A lot of it I knew deep down, but having it spoken aloud feels different!
There's also the similarities between them and Eclipse still, the tragic, yet fascinating point of "you can take a person out of a place, but you can't take a place out of a person." Because you can choose your family. You can reject those you share your origins with. But they will always be a part of you, because their time with them shaped you, and you can't run from that, no matter how hard you try.
Both Lunar and Eclipse asked for help, yet neither of them actually wanted it, neither of them tried. One actively rejects what they are offered, while the other doesn't process it, simply nodding along.
Both of them, together with Bloodmoon, share the "eye for an eye" mentality. Eclipse felt left behind by old Moon, and bitter towards Sun and later Monty, and wanted them to suffer for it. Lunar actively wishes those that do them wrong death, specifically, interestingly enough, Bloodmoon and Eclipse. Saying they hope Bloodmoon dies and rots for what they did to their sister, and trying to bring Eclipse to hell personally.
Neither of them can take criticism, lashing out when it's given to them.
It is so fascinating!
-Stardust
YES!!!!! YES YES YES OH MY GOSH ALL OF THIS YOU ARE SO CORRECT!!!!!
Seeing Earth and Sun interact one-on-one was already super interesting 2 me bc rlly, we don't see em together often unless Moon or Lunar is present, yk? So taking out both of the lunar bots leaves them almost, like, a new sort of vulnerable with each other, if that makes sense?? They can finally have conversations like the one they had!! They can talk about other people and they don't have to filter any words or thoughts, they can just speak. And even if they're a lil stilted without any barriers, it's still something!!
AND LIKE U SAID YEA IT'S ESPECIALLY FASCINATING TO SEE HOW THEY TALK ABOUT LUNAR!!!
Seeing them sort of dissect Lunar some more for the audience was super good and YES MAKES THEM A VERY HUMAN CHARACTER !! It gives them even more layers!!! More depth!!! More painstakingly human traits!!!!!
AND MORE SIMILARITIES TO ECLIPSE AND EVEN BLOODMOON YESYES!!!!!!
I truly TRULY love how much Lunar has tried to set themselves apart from the people they hate only to share so many similarities w/ them!!! And especially with Earth confessing she's a little scared of Lunar?! oh my stars their whole "me(good) vs them(bad)" approach is already crumbling and that would NOT HELP !!!!
The situations are situation'ing <3

my immediate thought in regards to "why are all the grands men and beasts women" was "because sexism" but then I though that's jumping the gun, but then I thought about it and like....that actually tracks? Like look at the main stories people associate with Nasu, Heaven's Feel or Fate Extra or CCC or Hollow Atarxia. They all have a theme of "Women are extremely easy to corrupt and men are much more set in their ways". Even Notes is about a male killing a corrupted female figure. Pretty much every story Nasu writes boils down to a powerful force that's been corrupted into being evil, and the only male one of them that actually gets treated like a villain for it is Angra Mainyuu who still gets to be a main character and does the right thing in the end rather than have to be stopped by force.
I dunno maybe i'm overthinking it? I guess it could just be he really likes Sakura and Shirou and so he keeps making similar characters and THAT's why we get so many "evil woman of corrupting evil" characters vs "Bodysnatching and-or power/name-borrowing himbo who is very bad at trying to help"
I feel like it’s probably a bit of both of those reasons as well as a simultaneous combo of it being not that deep and also deep like
(Disclaimer that I haven’t fully read the source material)
As you mentioned nasu loves the shirou/sakura type dynamic and a lot of his work reflects themes that, while not identical do tend to mirror that in vaguely similar ways with the fucked up dude trying his best and woman suffering very much who then starts lashing out super hard thing it to varying degrees of success and compassion. And to be clear, I think Sakura herself in the original vn is a pretty good character- she isn’t demonized by the narrative so much as it’s seen as a understandable but not tolerable reaction to a frankly untenable situation, and she is allowed agency and to grow and heal as a person-her most important relationships in heaven’s feel aren’t just w shirou but also her estranged sister. Same case for shirou as well-he suffered extreme trauma at a young age that he never healed from, instead using an unrealistic ideal to keep himself moving cowards, and the routes all tackle that background and how it colors his relationships in varying ways. Obviously there’s still flaws w their writing and they/their proxies haven’t always been handled great afterwards (stares hatefully at ooku) but I think some of this really is just bc it’s two character archetypes that personally speak to the writer in question.
At the same time there’s def been more of a focus on evil and fucked up women after the case then there has been on the fucked up men, and if I had to say, in the most mercenary terms, it’s probably bc they think sex sells (or something along those lines). I know stuff like ccc was written with the premise that ‘all girls possess the ability to become monsters when in love’ and borrowed heavy theming from sources like utena, but at the same time there’s basically 0 focus on the men of that game or other games (sans gilgamesh and Charlie/karl in extella link.) Why can we not have any male secret gardens? Why is the game so heavily weighted towards exploring the dark side of feminine sexuality but locks you out of archer’s third secret garden if you play as a male character? (I know why, but it’s so petty when they don’t do the same to the female servants if you play as a girl) It hampers their ability to properly develop the character arcs and themes of the story when they shove recurring characters like Leo and Julius off to the side while giving loving attention to new people like liz and jinako and it’s truly a shame. This is a similar reason as to why goetia is now the only beast who is completely unsummonable (you can summon fou paws can you not?)-they simply want to dedicate more time to developing the women characters whether bc of preferential bias on the writers end or bc the women are more popular, but it does create a damaging implication about what they might think of women when they don’t also reflect that effort back into men
I don’t think this is something done out of complete malice but it definitely does give off unfortunate implications, especially bc a few of the beasts have no historical basis (kiara and koyanskya) and are just woman who girlbossed too close to the sun, whereas all the grands do have some connection to history even if they are more obscure, so it does give off the impression that the evils of humanity are all sexy sexy women and the world will have to be saved by men even if that’s not what the writers intended (I still suspect we will probably get a female saber, and ofc goetia is a man…72 men?)(I also argue that kama should’ve been a man or non-binary bc how tf are you gonna split list into a top/bottom side for yin-yang stuff and then make them both woman for personal horny reasons that’s just stupid. Fuck outta here men also list. Or, uh, women also lust? I’m losing track).
would also argue king Hassan is PROBABLY not a himbo.

Our Flag Means Death S2
oh, we all have opinions, don't we? this is a recap/reflection post, so you know, spoilers ahead and all.
In general, I enjoyed the season, which was not a given - I was sort of trepidatious going on, mostly because I wasn't sure what leaning into fandom would end up being like. On that point, pleasantly surprised! Will come to that point later.
However, it definitely had its flaws. I do feel that these flaws mostly emerge from that the season was clearly too short for all they wanted to do with it, though. Eight episodes of less than half an hour for them to bring everything back together and wrap it up? Not really possible, which was a shame. What I'm left with is a feeling of how much I liked the bones of the season, and some particular things about it, but with a feeling of "oh, this could have been better."
Izzy's arc, for example. In broad strokes I'm in favor of it, I think it was entertaining and even moving in parts (I liked Izzy calling him Eddie at the end), but it was so rushed through that the change didn't quite hit the way it should have. Some more episodes to draw it out, to see him go from "guy who'd sell out the crew easily" to "guy who joins in the drag party" would have sold it better and given it the impact I really wanted.
We see this with a lot of the show's elements - the crews coming back together, Zheng as helper/antagonist, Prince Richard as an Evil Stede, even the sort of goofy shenanigans that are what made the show so fun in the first place. There's not enough time in the series' run to have it all work as well as it could have. To the show's credit, though, I'm inclined to blame Max rather than the writing team. I respect their ambition in trying, I like the bones of what they were doing, I wish they could have the time (and money) to have done it properly.
What it has done (mostly) well this season, and has always done well, is its sense of character. Stede's a remarkable work, at once cartoonish and fully believable. I particularly loved his episode 7 shift from "for the first time in my life people like me" to "lashing out because the default of them not is coming back." I wish there could have been more done here! But alas, cost-cutting.
My exception to this was whatever was going on with Oluwande and Jim, which seemed to have nothing to do with their first-season journey and mostly seemed confusing. Would more episodes have helped with this? Couldn't have hurt, if only to have their relationship make sense and flesh out their characters a little more. I'm still not sure I would have liked it, though.
It's a shame because what's interesting about the show is how much focus it has on relationships. Clearly what they decided to prioritize is the central Ed/Stede relationship, and that more or less all works here. Of course I want to see them together. Of course I want to see them happy. It feels like fanfiction in a positive sort of way, engaging with similar tropes and pressing the central relationship in similar ways. It's got almost enough room to develop properly, and, of course, ends with the pastoral fantasy fanfiction likes to end with. (Do I feel it really suits them both now? Well. I don't think they're counting on a third season, at least.)
There is a tension in choosing to have the show's focus be that relationship, between doing what the fandom wants in developing this middle-aged queer relationship in a sensitive fashion, and the absurdist, sadistic humor that is also at the show's heart. The biggest laugh I had was Lucius' recitation of the horrible things that happened to him, the way it escalated and the deadpan-dramatic delivery was just outstanding. (Nathan Foad's twitchy, chain-smoking, overly dramatic Lucius was a delight the whole season.) At its funniest, OFMD is violent and mean and callous, and that really works for it. Even Stede is kind of at his best when he's swishing around in a fabulous cursed suit and snapping at the crew for being superstitious (and I am so glad they managed to get in one low-stakes shenanigans episode, there should have been so many more). The tension between the realism of the relationships and the absurdity of the humor is really fascinating. I haven't actually looked into how people are responding to the season, but I can imagine that's at the heart of it. Which do we as viewers take the most seriously? Can we hold both visions of the show in our head?
(What We Do in the Shadows, for example, has a similar sense of humor, but centers it instead of the relationships, and sometimes at the expense of them. It's a better show for it in my opinion. But it also has more time to do it - 5 season, 10 episodes each. What could OFMD be with time to develop properly?)
Anyway, that's where I am with it. I'd say let's see where it goes, but well. Can't count on that, can we?

El and Mike — An Analysis (Part 1)
**I'm just going to put a quick warning. Yes, I am a Byler shipper. This post won't focus on Byler but will have references to it. This is merely my analysis on both characters and their relationship. If you don't agree you can scroll. This is all just my interpretation~~**
(Also these are all things people probably have said before but I'm just going off what I've noticed from my last rewatch).
This is split into several parts because I have a lot to say. At first I was going to break it down into El, Mike and then them together– but I'm writing out El's one and it's super long so I'm dividing it further.
Okay to begin,
El's Perspective:
Her Toxic/Abusive Past (And its Effects):
Throughout the seasons, we kind of see that El (when she was younger) didn't have a very strong understanding of what healthy relationship was.
In season 4, we can see through flashbacks that her 'siblings' were bullies. They essentially parallel Angela in how they target El. Not only that, but they're taught to compete. They are not each other's support but rather each other's enemy. We also see how Papa – her designated father figure – is super toxic and manipulative. He sees her as an experiment, and only praises her when she passes tests. Her mother was taken from her, and later shocked into a catatonic state.
This is my inner psych major coming out– but family dynamics are super important to how we grow up. When we're super young, we can't self-regulate our emotions– so we need the help of our family. They work as a support system. You lean on them, until you are old enough and comfortable enough to try and rely on yourself. Because, if you fail, you know you have your support system to lean on again.
One example would be if you wanted to go to a new city. You would probably be super scared (especially if you've never been outside your own town). You would, however, feel 100% better going if you knew your parents wouldn't judge you if you needed to comeback, but rather comfort and support you. That support helps- just knowing they're there for comfort if you mess up is enough.
There's a bunch of studies on this. Anyways-
El doesn't have that.
Her father figure when she was young would pit her against her siblings. He would punish her for disobeying (for going against what he wanted). There was no way she could be herself or try and understand herself in that space.
And this bleeds into her relationships with other people.
Tumblr media
In Season 1, we see Mike take the role of her caretaker. He's the one housing her and caring for her. Problem is? He's a child. So he doesn't have the mental capacity or emotional intelligence to sorta care for her or become an attachment figure for her. He lashes out a lot– understandably so. Both him and El are valid in this situation.
But still, we can see it in how she reacts to Mike's outbursts towards her. She gets scared. She's worried she did something wrong. She was supposed to help them, and because she failed, she's worried she'll get punished (similar to how Papa would punish her). She keeps saying she's a monster and constantly overexerts herself to help them (and to not mess up).
It doesn't help that Mike, while yes he does care for her, is using her to try and find Will. Yes, Dustin and Lucas too. But Mike's the one is whose taking care of her. When he thinks Will died, he gets mad at her. When she accidentally hurts Lucas, he gets mad at her. Again, completely understandable. But it doesn't help that he's her only support system. It means more when he lashes out because he's taking care of her.
He's her family. She literally assumes he would be her brother if she moved in with the Wheelers because that's how she sees him– in a familial way.
What I'm getting at is, in season 1, we see how El's super toxic family dynamics sorta transfer onto Mike.
Tumblr media
In Season 2, Hopper becomes her father figure- and in turn, becomes her caregiver. And, this season, we see a lot of times in which her and Hopper argue.
Why? What changed between season 1 and 2?
Well, she learned her worth. Yes, Mike wasn't the perfect support family, but him, Dustin, and Lucas all fought for her. They embraced her. They made her feel happy. She has something to fight for in a sense. She wants to see her friends again.
That's not the only reason though. She's also fighting and lashing out because she doesn't know how to self-regulate her emotions. She doesn't know how to cope with how she feels– so she lashes out. It's a childish thing, but she doesn't know anything else. She didn't get the opportunity to learn how to understand her emotions.
Back to the arguments.
Obviously, Hopper is also in the wrong in those scenes. They're both lashing out, getting angry, and saying things (or do things) that they know will hurt the other. But, the key difference is in the resolution. In the end, we see Hopper being vulnerable with El– sort of explaining how he feels the way he does and apologise about it. We don't see this from El.
And obviously, Hopper is the grown up so of course he should 100% be the one to apologise, but my point is– we don't really see El have a moment of understanding why she reacted the way she did. She doesn't reflect on her feelings because she doesn't know how. If anything, seeing Hopper reflect was probably her first encounter. Sorry to her at that point was literally just a way to not get punished. To avoid it. Now, it's something more. It's remorse. It's love. It's care. It's a way to show someone that you're sorry for hurting them and that they did nothing wrong.
Like damn, that was her first time experiencing that.
(We'll talk about the important Hopper-Byers family dynamic later).
Tumblr media
In season 3, we see her learn and explore friendships and romantic relationships. Up until this point, El has only ever understood (and experienced) family love, the kind of love where someone is taking care of you (food, shelter, protection, etc.). She has only ever seen romance through the lens of film. And, whilst yes she experienced friendship with Mike, Lucas and Dustin, season 3 is the first time she experienced friendship with another girl.
Yes, there's a difference. Yes, it matters. (I'll explain why later.)
But anyways, here we see that lack of emotional understanding come back. El doesn't know how to communicate with Mike the way the other couples communicate (Mike too– but I'll talk about Mike and their relationship later). With El specifically, it's because she doesn't know how. She has to learn how relationships work through Max. She doesn't have an understanding of romantic relationships at all.
This is mainly because– what did she have to base it off of? She's never had parents in a romantic relationship. So, she couldn't see it through that. She isn't allowed to go out that much, so she only gets glimpses of Lucas and Max. She only really has romantic movies (which we know aren't accurate).
Why does she make out with Mike? Because thats what they do in movies. Why does she say I love you back? Because that's what they do in movies. (I'm always jumping ahead of myself- I'll explain this more I promise).
Hence why she just dumps Mike- because Max told her to. She doesn't know how this works, she's just learning. She hasn't gotten an opportunity to learn so she's exploring. She's trying new things because why not? How else would she learn?
We are seeing how having that emotional support allows El to feel more comfortable trying things out. She has Hopper, and now she has Max. She also has Mike– who we see support her more when she's being a superhero.
Point is, she isn't in the same stage as everyone else. She's still learning and exploring. She doesn't fully grasp what it means to be in a romantic relationship.
What's crazy is, again, we see her learn and witness emotional vulnerability and intimacy through Hopper and his letter. He opens up to her and explains his fears. He shows why he feels a certain why. He shows her what it means to open up- to communicate.
Tumblr media
In season 4 though, things change.
First, El doesn't have Hopper anymore– or Max. She is in a new place– away from home. She's still grieving, she's being bullied, and she lost her safety net.
But she's also exploring herself more. She's understanding things better. She's trying to mix and match clothes to see what works– what screams El- who is El?
She's being thrown into the real world. She can't have nicer clothes because the Byers can't afford it– so she has hand-me-downs. She's in high school now so she has to face bullies and grades. She doesn't have the complete innocence – or more the naivety – she used to have.
Here, she's beginning to understand herself more in a personal level. And I feel it's here where we see her trauma come back. Yes, she has the support of the Byers– but she still dealing with a lot of changes and its hard (Not to mentions the Byers also are going through some shit). Not to mention she's experiencing the same things (aka bullying) that she did when she was in the lab.
So she reverts. Her insecurities come back. She feels like a monster again. She needs more reassurance because she can't self-soothe– she never learned how to.
When she fights with Mike– we can see her try to communicate, but she doesn't do it perfectly. She said it as a deflection when Mike tries to confront her about another issue. She becomes defensive and accusatory. Why? Because she's still learning how to be mature.
She's learning how everything works. She still has to learn how to self-regulate and how to communicate her feelings. And her being in a relationship– and trying to work on that and herself– it's just super difficult.
----
Okay, I'll probably post the second part right after this. I'll link it on this post when I do. It'll explore sorta El and her relationships a bit more in detail. Hope you enjoyed! Thank you for reading my rambles!
Also sorry for any grammar and spelling issues.

@3rachabot Jisung
🍷: I can see that~ I see we have a curious kitten here~ Welcome *grins*
👊 PUNCH - are they quick to violence?
🍷: Not around people. I wouldn't lash out at a person and hurt them.
⭐: He tends to get irritated at certain points, especially when really tired. He won't hurt someone though, especially his partner...unless they want him to take it out on them in...other ways 👀🤭 but yeah! he would most possibly walk away and go to the gym or smash some things to blow off steam.
🍰 CAKE SLICE - favourite cake flavour? are they specific about types of cakes?
🍷: Um I don't know if this counts as cake but Melopita which if translated is like Honey Pie or Honey Cake. It's really similar to Cheesecake. *he hums softly* I'm not really one for sweets so I'm not very picky as long as it's not too sweet.
⭐: He also likes a good chocolate cake as long as it's not too sweet or liquor soaked cakes. He's not super on sweets.
☀️ SUN - are they a morning person? what is the first thing they do in the morning?
🍷: ...I have the hardest time waking up- so no~ I hate mornings but if I do wake up early to go to the cafe, I tend to get ready and then do restocks. On a regular day I might go to the gym to fully wake up

Hi!!! May I get a HP, Star Wars, Voltron, and Disney matchup?
𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗖𝗦 + 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘
19, Libra, Neutral Good, enneagram is 4w5, muggleborn Ravenclaw (with Gryffindor tendencies), and my patronus spirit is Hummingbird. Biromantic Pansexual Genderfluid woman using pronouns of She/Her or He/Him. Cherubic-like face, with short height (5'1") plus sized Southeast Asian woman with Spanish descent that has chic messy/wavy brunette medium hair that reaches to my shoulder, oriental skin, slightly upturned eyes, small lashes, chocolate brown irises, cute flat nose, heart shaped face, full cheeks, cupid's bow lips, a small beauty mark on the forehead, and naturally straight teeth with tiny gap in front (just imagine that it's a mixture of Marinette from 𝗠𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝘆𝗯𝘂𝗴, Musa from 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘅 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯, and Alexandra Trese from 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲---cause' my friend told me that I kinda look like them). My sense of fashion is in between emo and boyish plus korean glam, I sometimes let my hair down or styled like Lara Croft reboot.
𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬
Distant, quiet, and timid at first making people thought I'm a demure, modest, and self-effacing that looks "immaculate" or "one of a kind" (due to my protective mom, a reason why I've never been in a relationship) but the truth is, dunno how to initiate a conversation, but a total opposite if I open up---friendly, ambivert, witty, laughing loudly on a daily basis---like my happiness is too shallow, super talkative, eats a lot (yeah I can finish a huge slice of cake or a meal in one sitting), awkward, daydreamer (I got embarrassed from knocking at the door even I'm inside the classroom 😂), EXTREMELY CLUMSY (mostly gets bruises from hitting, bumping my head somewhere, walking into something on my way, and being careless to my belongings), secretly likes affection, easily overwhelmed, prone to melt over wholesomeness, flusters on compliments, lightly blushes on cheesy banters, eager to share what I know (especially about Catholic Church---my past teacher joked that I'll become a saint because of it 🤣), oftenly speaks full of sarcasm with a lowkey crackhead energy citing meme references, and talented girl who can be your no.1 supporter and unashamed to be true to myself but can be awkward to strangers. In terms of leadership, I only educate and guide than being a prefect (I might take the role seriously), will lift my group when there's lacking/incompleteness. About doing projects in school, I become too extra and prepared for efforts, but I'll forget the process in the end.
The extent, I'm expressive, warm-hearted, willig to help, kind, intelligent, supportive, nice, creative, enthusiastic, laid-back, determined, tough, competitive, and feisty outside, but a real softie that can be childish and dramatic that cries so easily (but will enlightened real quick by smallest things that makes me smile) filled with doubts, frustrations, and insecurities with fear of failure that pushes off the limits to to please everyone because they might get dissappointed from expectations---I simply can't stop proving myself too much because I'm a survivor of bullying. But I still managed to be stronger than ever after I stumbled, even it's a slow burn process. I can be blunt, intimidating, harsh, and a douchebag if I receive ends or I got interrupted while doing something. Immature, headstrong, perfectionist, demanding, hesitant, jumpy, forgetful, overthinker, quick-tempered, sensitive, and anxious (no joke, my nervousness makes me think worse scenario will arrive). Though can be procrastinator and arrogant, I raised as a religious 𝖺𝗇𝖽 diplomatic youth, willing to fight what I believe (including my dreams and what's important to me) and what is right. In addition, I have a habit of staying up late and doing sign of the cross to ease nervousness.
Rowdy and feeling-brokenhearted and bitter friend in the group who fangirl a lot, swears like sailor, will call out on people that we loathe, will make fun of your stupidity (in a good way) before helping, and bring gossips, but a hopeless romantic and cheeky (makes banter with sarcasms or pick up lines as an endearment, but gets annoyed if I received sappy or offensive one), Still generous and concerned person in a subtle and different way.
𝗛𝗢𝗕𝗕𝗜𝗘𝗦
My hobbies are singing, drawing, roleplaying, listening to music, chatting/browsing on social media, conceptualizing, writing, and reading some stuffs. I'll include making corniest jokes/puns, sleeping, and dancing when nobody's around or walking like a model if I feel so bold (even I'm terrible at both xD). I also used to learn Italian language a bit.
𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗦
Loves kittens, milk tea, singing at the karaoke, cartoons, iced coffee, memes, cute things, watching YouTube videos (mostly pageants, ASMR, edit audios, and mukbangs), also enjoys playing games on my sister's PSP. Sucker for arts, choir, poetry, night sky, makeup, fun/deep/dumb conversations, Christianity, documentaries (about saints, real crime stories, and inspirational people), reading interesting stuffs, talking about social issues, and creative writing, chilling both indoors and outdoors. Beside that, my music taste are like late 90s-2000s songs (mostly rock, pop, and country) sometimes Catholic songs, kpop and ppop, chocoholic, and a sweetooth as well.
𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗦
Things that I hate are stereotyping, HUGE creepy crawlies (spiders, toads, snakes, and cockroaches), firecracker sounds, thunder and lightning, being left out, loneliness, heart break, blackout, and judgemental people. If I found out that someone hates or backstabbing or being rude to me, I won't hesitate to throw offensive criticisms, leaving them with a "I don't give a f" attitude. One random fact about me is, I 𝗐𝗂𝗅𝗅 vent out EVERYTHING I despise in my entire existence---from bad soap operas to toxicity, worse scenarios in real life, and how terrible is my love life from unrequited feelings that I got, because it's a big deal for me, and I consider forcing me to do what I'm not into and manipulating me as my major pet peeves.
𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦
In terms of triggers...I only have two which are ta𝖨king about divorce/annullment/separation because I came from a generational broken family (it sucks that some people I knew assumed that the reason why I'm overly unaware that someone is interested in me in secret, is I have "high standards" looking for a partner, but the truth is I'm strict and I have a personal preferences...I know my worth and I don't want settle for less!) and religion/beliefs discrimination, cause' there are reasonings that doesn't makes sense because some, sounds too hypocritical, like as if you're a morally good person.
𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 + 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦
My love languages are quality time and gift giving, but I actually swoon over physical touch (especially cuddles and cute kisses) and words of affirmation when it comes to having a partner, though I get attracted so easily, matured but can be a goofy person who's nice, friendly, kind-hearted, loving, faithful, and excels in academics is my cup of tea. Whenever I have a real life crush (which is rare), I act the same but deep inside, my heart is about to explode and will eventually share to my trustful friends how I highly admire that person, however if they spilled the beans out, I'll obviously deny it and will cry if they like someone else, it will take some time for me to move on, now I don't care for them anymore.
Best Friends to Lovers is my ideal trope because I find it very cute since you already knew each other before dating (which happened to my 2nd cousin, she married her best friend!)---perfect balance for romance, laughters, comfort, and tears when it comes to sharing your vibes, being there through thick and thin, safe with embraces, and helping each other to grow.
𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗔𝗦
My best assets are smile, eyes, personality, singing voice, artistic skills, writings, intelligence, oratorical skills and I have potential in hosting...so I can consider myself as a singer, artist, orator, speaker, and a top student who's a former active campus ministry member with three roles (choir leader, psalm singer, and reader).
May sounds different but I'm passionate for helping people through my talents and sharing my story to inspire everyone. I may look selfish, but I have a different way on how I show that I actually care also I have a biased sentimental value
Currently a college freshman, learning how to cook. I have so many interests, to the point I don't know what I'm into because of my dreams to become a popular Filipino YouTuber, a novelist, and being part of a successful chorale competing internationally...I also consider joining pageants at school too once the pandemic ends, but maybe.
HP: Remus!
- Remus is also quiet and a bit reserved when he's not in a familiar situation, so your own first impression on him would be a good one, as you'd seem similar to his own personality. He's sweet and is able to start up a conversation if he notices the other person is having a hard time doing so, so hopefully he'd be able to bring out your more extroverted and friendly self after a while so he can be around the more open you. He wouldn't mind you being a bit awkward-he's very much the same way-honestly, the comradery that would come from that would be more positive than anything else. He loves sharing knowledge and learning about new things, so your eagerness to talk about what you know would work really well also! He does a lot better when he knows someone has his back too, so your extra supportive nature would endear him to you as well.
SW: Han!
- Your nicer and more helpful personality would balance out Han's more standoffish vibes when first meeting. You might get on his nerves a bit first, but you'd quickly grown on him and, in turn, make him a bit of a better person. Your ability to be blunt and a bit harsh would serve you well if you ever needed to stand your ground on an issue that two of you have, as he can be quite stubborn.
VLD: Lance!
- Lance can be a bit immature from time to time as well, especially when it comes to trying to be funny or cheering up those around him-he's also headstrong and typically firm in what he wants to do, so your own determined personality would attract him to you a lot as well. He often puts off things he needs to do if they make him anxious too, but if you both recognize that you share that problem, helping each other might be a good solution!
Disney: Flynn!
- Flynn is quite a sarcastic and teasing person, so your own humor would match well with his. He's also quite a hopeless romantic as well, even though he's certainly not one to admit that right off the bat. He enjoys singing, and as he gets closer to someone he feels more comfortable doing so in front of them, so a partner he's been with for a long time would get to see him be more and more open with it. That also applies to activities like dancing.

How come Giles never got arrested and charged with Jenny's murder? Like surely the Police would take one look at the situation and conclude he killed her. Yes, there might not be lots of literal evidence but who else is it going to be? Giles is more than capable of breaking someone's neck, he's killed before, history of violence, he's the boyfriend and they always say it's someone close to the victim. I'm just confused how he escaped a prison sentence, any ideas?
Bloody hell Anon, really? There's a few ways of answering this but wither way, it’s a long one. Oh and here's the disclaimer that although I’m genuinely a qualified Legal Professional in the outside world and it is my day job, that's for English Law not American, plus I specialise in Civil not Criminal Law...which is different. Anyway, here’s why Giles didn’t get arrested and charged with Jenny’s murder:
Insufficient evidence.
That's what it boils down to. You can't go charging people with murder all willy nilly without a shred of proof. And you can't be detained by the Police without a charge brought against you (very simplified).
We've all watched how Police Investigations go on TV. CCTV, pathology and forensics would eliminate Giles as a suspect. It was 1998, not the Cretaceous Period, it’s not difficult to confirm his whereabouts. Even the most useless Police Department in the world would figure out pretty quickly that Giles had nothing to do with it. They probably kept him for three hours, tops.
They could potentially detain him for is obstructing a murder enquiry. And if he said he had no idea who could've done it, they're likely to believe him. Especially given the almost catatonic state he was in when talking to that officer at his flat. If they thought he knew more than he’s saying (possible, though unlikely), then perhaps they'd press further. Due to his clear emotional distress and being forensically eliminated as a suspect, they'd maybe just give him a ‘friendly’ reminder to call them if he remembers anything. Tbh given the amount of mysterious murders in Sunnydale, they'd not be hurried in finding the killer. Obviously, like I said, it'd likely be a tad more complicated but I'm not well versed in American Police procedures, so idk for sure.
So I’m going to teach you about how the English Legal System would approach this, in super-basic terms. While it is different to America, most of the principles are the same/similar, and illustrating exactly why Giles couldn’t be charged will probably help. I’ll even chuck in a few case citations/examples for good measure.
Murder is the most serious Unlawful Homicide Offence, a Common Law Offence. This means that it isn’t contained within an Act of Parliament, so there are no explicitly set directives to follow. However, in the 17th Century, Sir Edward Coke (fancy, influential English dude) defined it, and this definition is still widely used today. It says that murder is the “unlawful killing of a reasonable creature in being, and under the Queen’s Peace, with malice aforethought, express or implied”.
In order for a charge to be brought against someone, the Crown Prosecution Service (the equivalent is the U.S. Attorney’s Office) have a checklist of criteria that needs to be met. If one of these isn’t, there may be insufficient grounds for a charge brought against the defendant to be successful in Court. Also, the burden of proof is on the Prosecution, they need to have a watertight case to secure a conviction “beyond reasonable doubt” in Court. It can get quite confusing but essentially, it’s innocent until the Prosecution proves otherwise.
There’s two key components of a crime: Actus Reus and Mens Rea. Guilty Act and Guilty Mind. We just use the Latin to sound pompous and confusing because we’re English and apparently it’s necessary. Without one, you can’t have the other.
The Actus Reus of murder is “unlawful killing of a reasonable creature in being and under the Queen’s Peace”. It’s split into 4 parts:
Jenny’s death must be unlawful, which it was because it wasn’t a justified killing (Clarke and Morabrir), e.g. meaning not in self-defence.
Causation, but it’s easier to hang fire on that for now.
Was Jenny a ‘reasonable creature in being’? Yes, according to the criteria established in Attorney General’s Ref No.3 1991 and Malcherek and Steel (she’s not an unborn baby, nor braindead).
Did she die under the ‘Queen’s Peace’? Yes, because it didn’t happen in a war-time situation.
If all parts are ‘satisfied’ then the defendant will be found to have an Actus Reus and we move onto the Mens Rea.
Establishing a Chain of Causation then. This is where it gets a bit more complicated. The defendant (Giles) must have both Factual and Legal Causation for Jenny’s death. For factual, we use the ‘but for’ test. Would Jenny have died ‘but for’ the defendant's actions? (R v White (1910)). For Legal, we must ask if the defendant’s actions were the “operating and substantial cause” of death/injury (Malcherek and Steel). The defendant’s conduct must “contribute significantly” to Jenny’s death (Benge). Giles has neither of these, so there is no chain of causation, therefore the second part of the Actus Reus cannot be satisfied and thus, the Prosecution cannot proceed.
You could then discuss New Intervening Acts (we also use Latin for this bit but I cba) to see if anything else happened that could’ve broken the chain of causation, for instance gross misconduct of a medical professional. Seeing as Giles has no causation for Jenny’s death based on the evidence that the Police will have gathered (not from what we as an audience already know), he can’t be charged. They may suspect he had something to do with it, but in all genuine honesty, I doubt it and they couldn’t prove it in Court anyway.
So they can’t do him for murder. They could try to get him for manslaughter (accidental death), in this case either Gross Negligent Manslaughter or Voluntary Manslaughter, but again, there’s insufficient evidence and it wouldn’t be pursued by prosecutors. Other than that, unless Angelus planted evidence to frame Giles, our Watcher remains a free man.
So let’s look at the ‘evidence’ then. Giles is a big guy. 6ft1, relatively strong (he’d have to be to train Buffy), much bigger than Jenny and he’s the boyfriend. The scene where the body was found appeared to be that of a romantic evening between the happy couple. Giles could’ve lost his temper and resorted to violence, lashing out and killing her. Any investigator taking one look at the tweed clad, stammering Librarian (who called to report the crime himself) would figure that he isn’t a likely suspect.
Pathology would prove that Jenny’s time of death was before Giles came home, likely by over an hour. CCTV from the school car park would show Giles leaving at least 30 minutes prior. His car registration/model would be picked up on various cameras in Sunnydale on his way home/wherever he went. They’d find Jenny’s classroom and forensics would show DNA from another individual that matches prints on the body (Angelus) but obviously that wouldn’t be in the system, so it’d likely be a cold case with the killer having never being found. There is no evidence.
Also, Giles can have ‘violent tendencies’, but arguably only in times of distress. The Police wouldn’t think this unless they looked at his medical record. Even if they did, so what? Sunnydale is full of weird shit and the school librarian apparently gets bi-weekly concussions, big deal? Maybe he just gets hit on the head by falling books? The Council also likely purged any criminal record Giles obtained during his ‘Ripper rebellion’ so there would be nothing on the system to indicate he has violent tendencies, nor that he has killed before.
My initial reaction was to scream “BECAUSE HE DIDN’T BLOODY KILL HER!” from the rooftops but that wouldn’t have been helpful... Hopefully this wasn’t too confusing though... :)

(Hope you don't mind if I group these two asks together!)
Tamaki:
Tamaki's the epitome of "obliviousness" but after he actually recognizes that he has a crush, he goes full swing. He's ready to marry them kind of swing.
He's writing their names on his exams/work documents Instead of his own.
A big daydreamer. He'll completely space out when talking to them, because he's too focused on them than what they're saying.
Sends them anonymous flowers to their school/job all the time.
Probably confesses to a crush in HS through a letter. A letter he'd spent a whole week on.
A letter that has to be rolled out like a scroll.
He wouldn't just hand it to them though. He'd read it out loud on one knee. In front of the whole class cause he wants the whole class to know that his crush is off limits if they don't reject him-
As he gets older he's a lot less awkward.
But he's still Tamaki so anything he does gets out of hand, so a "simple" dinner would include him renting out an entire restaurant and hiring an Orcastra just to ask his crush out.
Kyoya:
Kyoya won't ever admit he has a crush on them. He'll beat completely around the bush.
Not because he's shy, but because even if he knows he has feelings for someone, he believes it's non benifical to him to be in a romantic relationship, so he'll pretty much just thrown the idea out there, waiting for them to confess first, making it seem like he's doing them a favor by accepting them, while also getting what he wants.
He'll make sure that they have feelings for him as well so that it doesn't fail.
Cause there's no way he'd purposely embarrass himself like that—
Tends to get a frustrated a lot easier when he's with his crush than when they're not around, because despite not wanting to have feelings for someone, he does, and he doesn't like not being in control of himself and how he feels, so he'll lash out with a rude comment towards them or move aggressively. Ect/ slam doors, handle things with less care./ Things he'll indirectly apologize for later.
Is in the habit of biting his lips a lot when he's around/thinking about his crush.
I think as he gets older he'll definitely become more aware of his different emotions and how to manage them, so he'd be much more gentle and polite towards them.
Still, he's not going to admit he likes anyone. That's embarrassing. His confession would be something along the lines of:
"Seeing as we both enjoy each other's company—"
Or
"Seeing as you enjoy MY company so much—
Haruhi:
It's going to take her awhile to realize that what she feels for someone is attraction and not just "respect", which is a rocky development in itself, but she'll get there eventually.
She'll subconsciously flirt and compliment them. All the time.
Though they're subtle flirts. Ect - sitting so close to them that their legs are touching. Holding their hands. Fixing their hair if it's a mess or out if place - She's unintentionally super handsy.
Is actually a stuttering mess when confessing, especially to a first young love. She'll twiddle her thumbs and kind of crouch in embarrassment, quietly muttering something like: I just... Kind of- I mean a lot. I like you. A lot and-"
She's a fast learner. I don't think Haruhi would have a lot of crushes, so it's not something she does on a regular basis but as she gets older she's a lot more mature with handling her confessions. And especially views "sitting on her feelings" as a big waste of time, so when she realizes she likes someone, she'll tell them probably over a coffee date with a plain and simple: "I've liked you for awhile now." Followed by something like: "If you feel the same, I'd rather you tell me now."
Hikaru:
A master at sitting on his feelings. And sometimes gets somewhat of a "crush grudge" when/if he gets rejected.
He won't get angry. Just very sulky. (Maybe there was an instance or 2 where he had sat on his feelings for too long or somehow found out his crush was in love with someone else and he cried to Kaoru about it).
+ Gets very sulky when
Develops crushes rather easily. Not the typical "they're so pretty i'm gonna ask them out" but if someone is kind or compliments him (particularly something that makes him stand out from Kaoru (something he has an unspoken complex about)) he's obsessed.
But because he sits on his feelings and contemplates for so long, he won't even think about confessing until somebody (most likely Kaoru) urges him to. And when he does he gets so nervous he almost cries. He's a shaky mess. Cause he knows he's gonna be absolutely devastated if they say no.
He'll blurt out: "I love you." And immediately regrets putting his whole heart on his sleeve like that and quickly tries to save himself with: "I think I love you."
Poor kid has no filter.
When he's older, he's a lot less emotional but still too awkward for his own good so his confessions are still really heartfelt and honest.
He keeps really intense eye contact and holds their hand, giving them a kind of long speech about all the things he likes about them, leading up to his confession.
Kaoru:
Not as timorous as his brother and recognizes his feelings pretty easily so he makes quite an effort into making sure his feelings towards them can't be misunderstood.
But is always worried that he might be "moving too fast" or is "too clingy".
Gets really anxious when his crush doesn't text back right away and sometimes giving himself a mental breakdown: "what if they're mad at me?"
Tends to stare at them a lot, silently, chin in his hands, absolutely mesmerized.
He's very affectionate. Constantly nuzzling against them.
Kaoru won't confess until he's absolutely sure their crush is the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with, because breakups terrify him. (And does not take them well).
He cries everytime.
Always goes the extra mile to impress them, leading up to his confession. + Spends hours getting ready.
His actual confessions are pretty straight forward because he's so desperate to get it off his chest.
It goes something like: "I like you. You don't have to tell me your answer now, but I want you to know I'm serious."
Hani:
It doesn't take much to get his attention to he crushes fairly easily.
But there's actually very few he'd be serious enough about to confess to.
A Savage tease when it comes to his crush. + Teases them to cover up his own embarrassment.
Makes up pathetic excuses to hold their hands or just to be intimately close to them. Doesn't matter how.
"It's cold outside. We should hold hands to keep warm!"
He's the type who'll hide their umbrella when it's raining so that they'll "have to" share his umbrella.
Frosts littles messages on the cakes that he buys them as gifts.
He's pretty sly when confessing. He won't say he likes them until they agree to go on a date with him so that he can blow it off as just a "friend date. Nothing serious" in case he gets rejected.
And he still avoids the word "love" until he's sure that he's serious about the relationship. Cause that's a strong word.
His confession being something like: "I'd like it if we could eat cake together like this all the time." As he looks them in the eye suggestively.
"Just me and you."
He likes to watch their reaction as they slowly come to realization that he's confessing. It's cute to him.
Mori:
He doesn't talk much, but gets embarrassed so easily around his crush.
Tends to get a bit overprotective with them. Similar to the way he gets with Hani, but a little more anxiously.
Has a strange mentality that he somehow how has to prove to himself that he's "worthy" to them before he can tell them how he feels.
Which kind of goes hand-in-hand that he's determined to never let them do anything themselves or by themselves, if he can help it. Ect: insists on carrying their bags, walking to class with them.
It's in his blood and unintentionally becomes their personal servant/bodyguard.
He gets a little blundering and uncoordinated, because of his feelings for them. Ect: The poor guy is walking into walls, + becomes so graceless and out of focus when he's training at the dojo that his pupils and underclassmen start overthrowing him.
Which is when Hani tells him that he should "probably tell them how you feel", afraid that his cousin might accidentally walk into traffic or fall down a flight of stairs.
Mori's confession is straight to the point, but considerate. He doesn't want to use too many words that it would overwhelm them but he does want them to know that he's serious about them.
But it's be completely out of the blue. The moment he comes to the realization that he likes them, he's going to say it.
And it's something maybe like: " t/n... I'd like for us to be together. If you're comfortable. You're special to me. I'd like it very much if... You could be with me."

New Places, Friendly Faces (Sanny) Pt 1
Author (As known on Various sites): Lady Lover- Rockfic, Luluthechoosingcrow - AO3, theladylovingcrow - Deviantart and Wattpad, @sammy_bluebells - Instagram, @imacrowcawcaw - main Tumblr, @theladylovingcrow - writing/art Tumblr, @insannywestan - Sanny shipping Tumblr
Fandom: Greta Van Fleet
Pairing: Sam Kiszka/Danny Wagner (Sanny), lil bit of Danny/Ronnie but he's quickly swept away with Sam
Length: about 2k
Warnings/Tags: Alternate Universe, Diner AU, No band AU, fluff, some angst, awkwardness, first dates, you know the ones where person A's date is failing and person B comes and sits with them, sorry i forgot what its called but that, hand holding, flirting, Sanny
Summary: Danny was nervous; he had been building up the courage for *weeks* to arrange a date, and now.... He wasn't quite sure what to think of the situation he found himself in. The night certainly wasn't going as he had expected it to - and his emotions had never ridden a roller coaster this fast. Hell, the beautiful angel holding his hand wasn't even the one he had arranged to meet 2 hours ago.
Author's Notes: I don't know what inspired me to do this but I'm very very happy with how it's turning out (and I've never written a longer-ish multi chapter story before, so this is interesting!) I would hate for Danny to not know the Kiszkas growing up, but hey I think I made their first meeting pretty damn cute!
Also, just FYI this is set roughly in late January of whatever year, so the twins are supposed to be 20, Ronnie is 18 I think, Danny just turned 18, and Sam is 17 (I think I did all the math right but idk) HOWEVER it wasn't until I finished that I realized I absolutely did not make their appearances congruent with what they would have looked like then.... Sam and Danny look like 2018 ish but the twins also look like their high school selves :( Idk sorry
Also, because Sam is 17, this will not be posted on Rockfic and will be marked as underage, though I'm not planning for it to get dirty
---------------
Danny had been taping his foot for the past fifteen minutes.
He usually didn't do that, it wasn't his nervous tick of non-choice, but Michelle hadn't showed up yet, and it was nearing eight.
Checking his watch, Danny watched the hand tick to 7:58 and then looked up, peering around the restaurant he was in.
Diner, he corrected himself. It was a homey, 1960's American diner, a little more exposed timbers and bear carvings than checkered tiles and jukeboxes, but that's what you got in Michigan. The building was low and sturdy, a log structure with a river rock chimney over the grills in back. Every single wall was decorated with various signed pictures of celebrities that had passed through, local newspaper articles about Gerald and Fern's Homestyle Grill, old handsaws, vintage pop signs, and a million other trinkets and posters chosen by the owners (Gerald and Fern, he assumed, though they'd probably passed on considering how old the place looked to be).
It was a nice restaurant, Danny thought; the atmosphere was welcoming and calm despite the occasional clamor from the kitchen, and the decor was very interesting to look at. Plus, the waitress that had directed him to a window booth and brought him some water was just gorgeous.
'Don't think that! You're on a date, idiot' Danny scolded himself,  shaking his head. Well, he was technically waiting for the date to start, seeing as she hadn't showed up yet. But, he still shouldn't be admiring another girl like that when his wasn't there - that would just make him an asshole.
But maybe Michelle was a little bit of an asshole because she said she'd meet him at 7 o'clock and it was now 8:06- 'Stop. It.' Danny scolded himself again, mentally smacking himself upside the head.
'Didn't your mother ever tell you to assume the best of people?' One voice asked.
'Of course!' Another Danny answered.
'Well, then, she probably got stuck in traffic, or her dog threw up in her car, or she hit a bad pothole, or her mom made her go to the store, or-'
'Okay, I get it! She probably doesn't mean to be so late,' Danny conceded, concluding the conversation he was having with himself. Maybe the waitress was right and he had been sitting there by himself for a little too long.
Of course, being the nice girl she was, the waitress - Ronnie her name was Ronnie - had stopped by periodically whenever she had a minute to chat with him or finally bring him some coffee after he had given in to the craving.
Danny looked down at the small bouquet wilting on the table and sighed. Looked like this date was a bust, just like the few others he'd attempted, and he'd actually been very excited to see her. In fact, it was Michelle who had suggested this Gerald's Grill when he had shyly asked her out in Biology.
He had finally made up his mind to just stop wasting Ronnie's time and go home when a group of boys came trouping in, wet from the snow but in exuberant spirits and, apparently, "In great need of some refreshment, Ronnie dear!"
That made him want to pack up and get out even faster because, honestly, he didn't need any more knowing looks or judgement right now, but the last boy to walk in made him freeze with his coat halfway on.
The kid looked about Danny's age, roughly the same height but a whole lot skinnier. He had on skin tight jeans, scuffed hiking boots, and a red woolen coat. When he turned to talk to Ronnie, Danny could see the Tom Petty hoodie beneath the jacket and some silver necklaces.
'Nice,' he thought, 'seems like a cool guy: good taste in music and fashion.'
Also, 'Fucking gorgeous'.
What made him pause his leaving, though, wasnt the guy's body but his face - his sculpted brows, insanely high cheekbones, pink lips, and long lashes; all framed by the healthiest looking head of hair Danny had ever seen, second only to his own, or possibly one of the guy's he had come in with (the one who yelled for Ronnie) that had rather impressive, long curls styled to look like 70's mutton chops. There was something naggingly familiar about his features, but Danny couldn't place it.
Ronnie rolled her eyes and pointed the group of boys to a large table in the Eastern corner of the diner.
She snagged some menus and followed behind them, though another guy, this one also with long hair (he was having some competition here) grown out Justin Beiber style (okay, maybe not) said; "We don't need those, Ronnie, I'm pretty sure Sammy here has the whole menu memorized by now. Right, Sam-a-lam-a?"
The intruiging boy nodded, starting to recite off what sounded like a very accurate, detailed account of the diner's menu, prices and everything. Danny was surprised at the slight raspy, smokers quality of his voice, but it was pleasant, in a way.
After the fourth item or so, Ronnie stopped "Sammy" with a swat to the shoulder, shaking her heading and muttering "stupid genius" under her breath. He grinned up at her, wiggling his eyebrows and asking for a round of Vernors, pretty please, Ronnie-kins.
Holy shit, they were siblings! That's what had been buzzing at the back of his head for the past couple minutes; those mouths and cheekbones, seductive eyes, that lovely hair. The guy was Ronnie's brother (and no wonder he was so beautiful then).
Squinting, Danny watched the party in the corner. Two of the other guys, 70's hair and Justin Beiber (though he felt bad calling him that since he seemed cool and, hey, he'd  had the same 'do when trying to grow his out) were laughing at something Ronnie said, leaning on each other and behaving the exact same way, down to their blinks.
Twins! Danny could tell because he had two cousins, also twins, that acted exactly like that. Wait, though.... they looked awfully similar to-
More siblings?! Jesus, how many kids did this family have? He hoped the four were all, for the sake of their parents.
He guessed that the twins were a little older, so either "Sammy" or Ronnie had to be the youngest, though they all looked awfully similar in age.
'Seriously, how do their parents handle that?' Especially with the attractive, flirty twins, beautiful daughter, and the super smart supermodel - it had to be several handfuls raising a house like that. Danny suddenly felt a bit more sympathy for his parents, even with just having to deal with him and his little sister.
Ronnie sashayed away, calling over her shoulder for the boys to keep it down. They all hooted and hollered in response, seeing as Danny was the only other patron to bother at the moment.
Danny slowly sat back down, curious as to what interesting conversations he would hear from the group. The twin with curly hair was currently talking to a larger guy on the other side of the table about the "carefully curated sensuality" of Led Zeppelin's Prescence, which alone made him want to stay.
Not to mention, he could continue to observe the hot guy that was immediately fascinating him like few people did. Danny wasn't deluded enough to think it was love at first sight - though it was definitely a fair amount of lust - but there was something about the other boy that made him want to track his every move down to the blinking of his eyes.
"Woah there, creepy much? Chill out, he probably doesn't even like guys anyways," Danny muttered to himself, hoping that his staring wasn't obvious enough to make "Sammy" aware of it. He loved to people watch - and admire, but hated the uncomfortable confrontation of acknowledging that he had been doing so.
Supermodel boy twisted in his chair, looking at one of the many things on the wall - though it made Danny's breath catch because, could he tell? - when he caught Danny's eye. He smiled at Danny, making him smile a little tightly and nod in return.
At that moment, Ronnie came out of the back with a platter of glass pop bottles and a notebook tucked into her apron pocket, using her hip to close the swinging half-door to the area behind the counter. She smiled at Danny as he passed, murmuring a soft "I'll be right back with you," before continuing on to her brothers' table.
Gorgeous boy laughed - a surprisingly obnoxious, though maybe endearing, braying one - and reached out a fine boned hand, plucking a bottle from the tray before she could set it down. He took a long swallow, throat visibly working and eyes half closed, head tipped back. Danny quickly averted his own eyes unless he started drooling onto the tabletop.
Ronnie came over to him after a minute, refilling his coffee and insisting that she get him a piece of pie, on the house. He didn't have the heart to tell her no, not after more than an hour of sitting there pitifully, and especially not now that he knew her gorgeous brothers (or at least one of them, the prettiest, too) knew he was there. It would be incredibly embarrassing for them to know that he was stood up and alone; Danny wanted to give off a good impression, for some reason.
Ronnie walked away again, hips swaying, and disappeared into the back. "Sammy" laughed at the table in the corner and Danny's eyes shot to him, watching how he played with his straw between those two pillowy lips.
He started sweating a little bit, considering who he thought was more attractive (not like either of them would be interested in him, but). Ronnie was curvy and kind and beautiful, but Sam was lean and charismatic and had the most lovely facial structure Danny had ever seen.
'Ugh, bisexual problems', Danny thought. No one else would have know what he was talking about if they were there, though, since he had never mentioned it to his parents nor his few friends.
He wondered, idly - because he really was out of their league and it would never, ever happen - what his family would think if he brought either of them home. Ronnie would be sure to elicit absolute delight from his mother after her admonishment for getting a girlfriend in the first place (despite the fact that he was allowed to do what he wanted now that he was 18, Danny's mom still saw him as her little boy). Ronnie's brother, he wasn't sure; it's not like they were homophobic, but Danny was certain that him bringing home a guy out of nowhere would be quite the shock.
They'd warm up to Sam (he didn't want to call him "Sammy"; it felt too familiar to he polite, though he did like that), he was sure. His parents would be impressed by his intelligence and be charmed by his jokes, and tell Danny that they were glad he had found such a nice boyfriend.
Danny drifted off into a daydream of what it would be like to date Sam, to take him to family holiday meals and go out hiking with him and cuddle up on a late winter afternoon like this one. He rested his head on his hand, letting his eyes go unfocused as he envisioned the imaginary world in which he had an 11/10 boyfriend.
"Hey, I've got your pie. Mind if I sit and eat mine with you?"
