Bite the Hand For It Does Not Feed: An Impavidus Cycle Analysis
I've been slowly working on an analyzing the themes present in my favorite series The Impavidus Cycle by @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s , about a young daemon learning to be more than a tool for his father. This is a WIP that I'll keep adding to!
From our earliest moments we're reliant on others for necessities such as food, shelter, affection and stability. A parent's love is supposedly boundless and immutable. We trust them implicitly, believing wholeheartedly in their words that reassure us and bring us comfort. But not all parents are good, seeing their children less as individuals and more as extensions of themselves, the child’s worth only determined by their willingness to follow every direction unquestionably. Birthright's Albtraum learns this the hard way as he realizes that he's been used as a tool to further his father's own goals.
Albtraum awakens in the underbrush of a forest with naught to guide him but the presence in his mind that calls itself Lucifurius, the progenitor of all daemonkind. His favor and praise are easily given, so long as Albtraum obeys. And obey he does, making his way to the nearby village and killing the blacksmith at Lucifurius' command. Albtraum flees into the countryside with stolen armor, weapons, and the skull mask that would become a trademark. For several years he roams, killing in Lucifurius' name and growing in strength. Lucifurius is Albtraum's entire world, he knows nothing else so he makes it his mission to ensure his father is pleased with him. Even the name given to him, literally meaning nightmare, is a carefully crafted manipulation tactic instead of the act of love it's meant to be. Thus the first cycle is established and the seed planted of Albtraum needing to feel useful to and loved by the only other being he's ever known.
Oftentimes we don't recognize abuse or neglect as such when it's happening, only understanding much later on the damage it does to our psyche. Albtraum has been effectively manipulated and honed into a weapon for Lucifurius' sole use, believing his father's lies and wielding them like a blade against anyone he encounters. He's protective of the little world that exists just for him and Lucifurius and has been led to believe that others are a threat to that. Albtraum is both a weapon and a shield, equally useful to Lucifurius.
It's probably obvious I'm not using this account much anymore... my Bakura Fever has ended 😂 (still fucking love the Bakurae and Thiefshipping... it's just no longer ruling my entire life.)
I might still post a few things on occasion, especially if I see any cool fan content... and I have a writing piece in the upcoming thiefshipping zine, so look forward to that!
In the meantime, I've been getting back to my original works, I've missed my OCs desperately 😭 if you wanna follow my original content, you can follow my main blog at @i-m-p-a-v-i-d-u-s ! (And check out the #impcycle tag to see my original work.)
Thanks for a really fun ride, ygo fandom! I'll be back someday 👋
Albtraum is a daemon who is possessed by his father, the ancient progenitor of his kind. For as long as he could remember his only goal has been to kill any who cross his path, until he stumbles upon a hidden mountain kingdom that takes him in and shows him a life beyond violence.
Mianna Serafin
Mianna Serafin is the immortal queen of Sylva and a member of the Order of Azoth, a secret society of immortals who maintain balance and protect the world from forces they are not even aware of. She is caring and kind at her core, but her tenure as a ruler has hardened her heart.
Joaquin Harlan
Joaquin is Sylva’s seneschal and one of the oldest immortals the Order is aware of. He was once a soldier who died of an illness and mysteriously returned to life. He used his immortality to travel the world and learn the arts, though creating clothes is his greatest passion.
Brunhart Frasch
Brunhart is the captain of Sylva’s guard. He was murdered along with his wife, and used his immortality to track down and kill the men who did it. Lacking direction, he stumbled upon Mianna, who offered him a second chance at life - though he's still deeply haunted by the past.
