so we all know astarion was named after the minotaur of greek myth, who, despite widely known as the minotaur (“bull of minos”), was named astarion/asterion (“starry one”) by his mother at birth. asterion the minotaur was trapped in a labyrinth and cursed to devour virginal men and women thrown in there as sacrifices.

”The House of Asterion” is a 1947 short story by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges that retells the story of the minotaur from the minotaur’s point of view. it’s one of his best early short stories and it’s very short, only 3 pages long. you can read it here.

borges is in my top 3 favorite writers of all time, and “The House of Asterion” obviously deserves to be considered on its own merits, so i feel slightly irreverent connecting this text to a recent video game. but i reread this short story today and there was much to think about, there were many more seeds planted in my mind in terms of interpretations of the minotaur myth and how asterion the minotaur relates to the story of astarion the vampire. i think it will for you, too.

Hey hey hey. Do you wanna know a fact that makes me cry. Okay so timber rattlesnakes will guard their babies for a week after birth, but new research has shown that parental care still continues after the fact:

Babies under a year old will follow their mom's scent trail to the overwintering dens that the family uses, and will often den with their moms, siblings, and pregnant female relatives to survive the winter. They will almost always follow their mom's scent, but they will also sometimes follow the scent of another female closely related to them. It's not known if the female is deliberately laying down the scent trail, but its highly likely that she is. They also seem to recognize their littermates and will vastly prefer to congregate with them over non-kin individuals

Not only that, many rattlesnakes will also return to the same birthing dens and overwintering dens year after year, or will use sites close by if the original is no longer accessable. Moms guarding their babies also often be far more defensive than they normally are outside of breeding season, and will sometimes intercept their babies if they're moving towards danger, nudging them to the safety of their dens. There's also been many instances of rattlesnakes giving birth next to other rattlesnakes or pit vipers and raising their young peacefully in a communal 'nursery den', though studies into this behavior don't seem to have been done.

This is such a stupid tiny detail that probably doesn't even mean anything BUT LET ME BE CRAZY AND OVERANALITICAL FOR A SECOND OKAY? I'm thinking about that little scene before the theme song where the brothers become cartoons and they do their little pose and then run off. Iconic, slayed, ate, left no crumbs.

But they didn't just run off... together. Like there's a very clear pause where they make eye contact, Martin runs off, Chris watches for a second, and then follows.

Do you think this is in reference to how Martin, being like 4 years older had a head-start in joining the research field while Chris would have just gotten into college and would have to catch up with him.

Martin's face is so confident and Chris' is just so excited. Like Martin is leading the way and Chris is so overjoyed to follow.

obsessed with zhongli x azhdaha lately like they were doomed from the start and they make my heart hurt a bit

a blind dragon yearning to see the sun and morax gives him eyes so he is the first thing he sees

MIND YOU zhongli is always represented by the sun (this is just like being stabbed)

azhdaha himself said there was no one who trusted and respected morax more than he did

"that day in the chasm...did you hesitate?" "a heart of stone is a heart nonetheless" SHOOT ME

"you're leaving?" if you listen closely you can hear zhongli's heart crash and shatter into pieces when he realizes azhdaha can't stay

rage beneath the mountain is one of my favorite pieces of genshin music it is so good

azhdaha is the moon and zhongli is the sun (why don't i just die)

im telling you they were DOOMED cause morax is like "lets form a contract and be friends but if you hurt my people i will stop you" thats how you knew it was already fucked

zhongli trying to hold back azhdaha's erosion with his own strength for as long as he could but he couldn't do it and having to watch his friend turn into a shell of himself

zhongli having to steel himself and lock away his feelings as he seals his partner in a prison within the earth and its implied that this is contributed to his own erosion

eroded azhdaha calling zhongli an usurper who stole his throne but this also means the true azhdaha did not care for the title and loved zhongli and humanity

that one event where zhongli returns to azhdaha's domain and leaves wine there

the 5* liyue golden bow trapped in beta and the description is that zhongli asks azhdaha "if we can ride on your back we could visit the palace on the moon" and the thought of morax sitting on azhdaha's back as they roam the mountains makes my chest ache

the betrayal hurts even more because azhdaha is saying all of these hurtful things and doing horrible things and morax knows this isn't the real him but he can't do anything to stop him

azhdaha seeing morax's face before he was sealed away and accepting his fate

more beta bow lore (it’s called Dreams of Dragonfell) is that in his prison azhdaha is distraught over breaking his relationship with zhongli and humanity that he treasured so much he doesn’t understand why he did such a thing but the memory itself is painful

Rubius left the server for now, but he says he’ll get more involved in QSMP again. First, he wants to call the admins so they can update him on the lore.
