NA JAEMIN : the coffee incident

today is like any other day, you go to work to the neo cafe you after your classes, take the costumers order you know just the usual nothing new nothing special well that's until na jaemin came.

the first time you layed your eyes on jaemin when he walked through the cafe door, your reaction was concern. it's obvious that he's been cramming for days now, his eyebags says it all.

"uh, hi can i get a 8 shots of expresso to go?" jaemin rubbed his eyes under his reading glasses, tired for only getting 2 hours of sleep.

"eight, are you sure? that's eight, it's strong" you clarified the man who only gave a smile and a nod, not wanting to keep the tired male you immediately went to make his hell of a coffee.

after finishing his order, jaemin was about to exit the door he once walked in too but was stopped when you told him he has to sign a paper.

"i am so sorry sir if i take too much of your time, i know you're a busy person but i need you to sign this for me please" you respectfully handed jaemin an agreement paper that concludes, you not being responsible if anything happens due to his coffee shots.

"don't worry i won't drag you if something happens, but i'll make sure to tell the doctors you make amazing coffee" jaemin lightly chuckled while signing the paper before walking away.

your first encounter might now be as romantic like you see in disney movies, but it's sure became one of your core memories.

LEE JENO : dear, santa... 

the first time you and jeno met was in christmas eve, you're on your way home with a cake in your hand kind of sad that you're once again alone this christmas. not wanting to take the stairs like you used too you decided to take the elevator instead !

the elevator is about was about to close, when out of nowhere a foot came to stop it. you looked up at the opening door to see who entered and immediately saw a struggling jeno, so as a decent person you are you helped the male carry some of the foods he's holding.

"thanks, my arms are starting to get numb" the male in a black leather jacket thanked you after putting the food in the steel floor. the ride was quiet, the both of you are on your phone assuming that i'll be quick.

then a loud crash was heared, the elevator light even started to flicker and that's when the both of you knew that you were stuck in an elevator, in christmas eve. the male near the emergency button quickly pushed it and informed the person on the line that the both of you are stuck. 

"oh my god, this cannot be happening. there's no signal i can't call anyone" you panicked, going back and fort inside the elevator while jeno is still talking the emergency services.

"bad news, they said it might take more an hour since all the repair man of unavailable" jeno sighed, as he sits down in front of you.

it's 11:41 pm it's been more than half an hour, you and jeno are running out of topics plus the elevator is starting to heat. then the emergency services finally came! the both of you stood up in unison.

"alright stand back now! it's going to take 10 minutes" the man shouted to the other side, you couldn't careless if takes 10 minutes all you want righr now is go celebrate your christmas outside the elevator.

12:00 am at christmas day, the doors of the elevator finally opens. the snow out the building is starting to fall, the workers are greeting one other 'merry christmas' so you decided to do the same for each other.

"merry christmas, y/n" he patted your back lightly.

"merry christmas, jeno" you gave him a sincere smile before walking through the stairs together while helping him carry the foods.

who would've thought santa can also grant wishes from adults, two lonely souls who feels alone during this holiday is no more lonely as they found comfort in each other's arms.

afterall, christmas is a holiday that should never be spent alone.

HUANG RENJUN : the cab love

it's now 12:30 pm you're supposed to be at your school at 12 sharp, since the class is having oral recitation. you can't miss today class, you stayed up for this you reviewed your notes all night, so you have to get into a cab fast!

renjun is quite the same, he has an art project to present in front of the class and he can't miss that afterall art is his favorite subject, the male would rather die than leave a bad impression to Mr.Kim.

the both of you have been waiting for 20 minutes now, you can't seem to find a free one, it's either there's already inside or going home.

"it's alright, it's alright we'll find one eventually" you tried to calm yourself down, while your arms still forward hoping a cab would pull up in front of you.

renjun tighten the his grip on the canvas he's holding, clearly stressed in the situation his in. the male even started to shake his arm impatiently.

"dear god if you're true give me a cab" he sarcastically pleaded not thinking it'll actually come true, renjun smiled widely as he saw the cab stop.

thinking that the yellow car stopped for you, you immediately opened the right side of door while renjun opened the left side. you didn't notice each other until you guys are sat in the car seat and said your location in unison.

"make up your minds, building a or build b of neo uni?" the driver looked into the small mirror only seeing his two passengers bangging their heads in the front back seat, humiliated by their mistakes.

the driver didn't ask more questions thinking that his passengers are in a love quarrle, he instead wished you both happiness in his mind.

HAECHAN LEE : cinderella, run !

your third class is finally over, which means it's finally break time ! time to eat lunch that you packed yourself this morning.

as you and your two friends walking down the stairs while laughing at the story you were telling them, they told you to demonstrate what really happened that day and so you did.

you were carefully demonstrating the scene until it's finally in the funny part, you imitated the kick in your story. and with your little to no luck the shoe on your right foot went on a short flight before landing into someone's head.

haechan looked behind him with his one hand touching the part that got hit, he landed his gaze to you that's hiding behind your friends back. the male picked up the black (heel) school shoes and started to come up to you.

"he's coming, y/n run for it" sungchan whispered, scared for your life you ran your ass back to your classroom with no shoes, since the other one will slow you down.

"WAIT! CINDERELLA, YOUR SHOES!" haechan shouted before picking up the shoe you left and went on to find you.

even if the clock strikes 12, prince lee haechan will find you no matter what happens! even if it means searching the whole school.

ORCZY'S FAN FICTION RECOMMENDATIONS

-Varian's Tangled Trials by IFoundYouJustineTime and TheArtistsMuse A complete Vat7k story adapting the original creators' plot points into an amazing, 24 chapters (episodes) long fic that reads like an actual cartoon. If you're new to Vat7k or Tangled The Series, or even if you haven't seen the latter (like me), you WILL enjoy this. If you like a fun adventure with a bunch of nerds as a found family, this is for you.

-What Summer Meant to You -If I Really Hated you (and I really, really do) both by Battybatzgirl First one's a battle of the bands/modern AU, second is an AU where the boys are rival engineers, both focusing on the ship Varigo. The writing style is what made me stay and read these to the end. Incredibly funny and entertaining to read, the way Varian and Hugo are characterised is just. So good. If you like a well written, lighthearted, romantic comedy, this is for you. (Both include some skippable adult scenes, but the story is much more about the romance)

-Making End's Meet by Meltthepoint As the author's name suggest, this is a melting point (Donella x Ulla) story, set in a modern setting. Donella enrolls Hugo into this new school, who then befriends Varian. Ulla and Donella meet again. This is about how two women make up and start anew after their lives went into directions they didn't want. The story is much more character focused, a really fun read. Very insightful about the women's characters. An exception, as I still haven't finished reading it. Definitely not the type of fic I can binge read, but I'm really enjoying it.

At the end of everything by Squirrelflight A Night in the woods AU (haven't played the game, you don't have to, to read it), and unfinished as of yet, but man. Worth checking out! Unlike the stories above, this one's definitely darker and has a really tense aura. Love it. The writing is so good it makes me so thrilled about what will happen next! I also really like, once again, the characterisation.

-You can stay here by KALL A pre canon story about how Pigsy and Tang adopt MK, how MK gets to be in a safe environment and starts figuring himself out. Great writing style, entertaining plot, what more could I ask for? (maybe an update lol) As of yet, unfinished, and hasn't been updated since late 2022. The author actually posted ( https://www.tumblr.com/its-kall-the-clown/735524530668371968/are-you-going-to-be-updating-any-fics-on-your-ao3 ) about wanting to rewrite the story sometime. Which is great! In case you're reading this, take as long as you want!

-A garden across our collarbone by PittedPeaches Spicynoodle soulmate AU where what you write, or in MK's case, draw on your skin, appears on the soulmate's skin as well. Red Son's journey of (very slowly, this is a slowburn) falling in love with MK. A lot of inner monologues, the story plays out more like a retelling of what happened from Red Son's perspective. Kind of like a diary entry and I LOVE IT. I actually didn't understand the pairing before reading this, nor was I that invested in Red Son's character. This fic changed everything. (it also sends you good luck if you read it on the train! I acquired: friends!)

RIPTIDE

-BREAKING FREE! by earlgray_milktea A fish 'n chips Highschool Musical AU (another thing I haven't seen, you don't need to, to read this). The writing is so undoubtedly Disney, it is at times so over the top dramatic, you can't help but smile at half the interactions. The charm is big on this one. The characters are exagerated but somehow not (completely) out of character. Basically if Riptide was on Disney, this is exactly how they'd act. Also it's just really, really cute.

-Depths of Natarus by goldpines Chip Mermaid AU set in an Undersa/Oversea war, focusing on Fish n Chips as well as Jay Ferin (my girl!). Two reasons why you should read this right now. First: the descriptions are SO detailed and immersive! It made me also kinda have a crush on Gillion Tidestrider. How. Second: it made me care about Jay. And the way she's written here is just so so great. You can tell the author knows what they're doing, the feels just keep coming, I alost teared up multiple times. This story makes you feel a lot of emotions at once, an overall amazing reading experience.

And these were my favs since last April. Specifically the ones that made me go absolutely insane. In a good way. Again, if you have any good recommendations (preferably longer stories, but shorter ones are also fine), please feel free to share them.

OC Character - Kayden Park

Kayden was overjoyed. He hadn’t thought tulips would grow at this time of the year, but entering the garden he found a wide variety of them, pristine and in full bloom. They were the one flower that Kayden had really hoped would grow because after he read what their meanings were, he knew almost instantly who he wanted to give them to.

Specifically the red tulips.

Some might say he falls too easily and others might say he loves too hard. But in reality, Kayden couldn’t control who he was or how he felt about people. When he found someone he liked, he became attached to them, trying to be as close as possible while nurturing their growing relationship - whatever it might be. Even if that person got on his nerves all the time, or they ended up doing things that very honestly scared him, ending a relationship just wasn’t in Kayden’s vocabulary.

Red tulips symbolize true love, or a soulmate. Kayden had a specific person in mind and while he wouldn’t say it was true love - hell Atreyu could barely stand him in a good - he did think the other was his soulmate. Despite their ups and downs and the multitude of times he was locked out of the dorm and left to fend for himself for the night, Kayden knew that what he had with Atreyu was special - indescribable even.

And while he couldn’t find the words, he knew the flowers would do the best job. So after carefully plucking five of the tulips, he handed back inside and to his room where he had left his roommate. Atreyu had been in one of his moods again, refusing to speak to Kayden, so hopefully the flowers would double as something to cheer him up.

“Atreyu~!” he sang happily as he opened the door, hoping he hadn’t disturbed the other but knowing he probably did. He braced himself to be hit with a pillow or something, even a “go away” in his harsh and icy tone. But when he got no greeting in return, Kayden took a moment to actually look around the room.

It was empty.

And not just in a way that said Atreyu left to go mope somewhere. It was truly empty. The smile on his face slowly fell as he stepped into the room. His bed was made, but it lacked a lived-in feel - as if a maid had come in and just fixed the bed to make it look presentable. The nightstand next to the bed was barren, everything Atreyu had kept there gone.

Kayden didn’t want to jump to conclusions but his mind was already racing. He crossed the space quickly and yanked open the drawers. Barren. Turning, he moved to the closet next and opened it. Nothing. Everything that had belonged to Atreyu was gone.

He was gone.

As Kayden stood there, reality slowly came crashing down as he realized he was alone. No note. No text. No goodbye. He clenched the tulips tightly in his hand before releasing them and letting them drop to the floor.

Stupid.

He had been so stupid and this is what he got.

Jisung laughed and nodded, pulling back some from the other. “Tonight…supposedly.” He said and shrugged. “But my body has been weird lately, so it may hold off another day. I hope it does cause I wanna be able to spend time with you. It’s been so long.”

Jisung had honestly missed the omega. He hadn’t seen Hyunjin since the night of the attack. The last thing Jisung could recall was rolling on top of Hyunjin to protect him from the blade before calling for help. Chan had told him already that if it weren’t for him, Hyunjin probably would have ended up dying. 

So if that meant Jisung suffered from nightmares and a sore side (with a near death experience of his own), then so be it. It was worth it. 

He grunted when Felix suddenly tackled them both, hugging them tightly. “Yeah! What Lixie said.” He said and whined. “Felix, my side.” He hissed softly. 

Chan watched the three, smiling fondly. He walked over and patted Felix’s head gently. “Come in Lix, be careful with them.” He said gently. “They’re both still healing.” 

Seungmin peeked his head out of the kitchen before hiding once more, afraid to face Hyunjin. He felt so guilty still for turning his back on the omega so fast. Things from that had been hectic, chaotic. Feelings were hurt, people were hurt and Seungmin may have chosen the wrong side. 

He still fully believed how things were handled was inexcusable and that was mostly on Chan’s part but knowing the other was Hyunjin’s soulmate and seeing first hand what a soulmate bond looked like through Jisung and Minho, Seungmin sort of understood where everyone was coming from. It couldn’t be helped, the attraction.

He wanted to apologize for being such an ass but he was afraid Hyunjin wouldn’t accept it. He didn’t want to cause discourse in the pack because the others seemed so hellbent on getting Hyunjin in the pack and they were happy. He would be happy too, he just wasn’t sure if Hyunjin would be happy around him. 

Meanwhile, Changbin made his exit from the kitchen and smiled. “We’ll looky here.” He called. “Chan really did bring us a present.” He teased.

When you met Charlie you immediately connected over your love for nature and animals. It took you awhile to fully open up to him and you where first friends, until you both realised you wanted something more. You and Charlie always go on hikes, walks and nature trails. When you go on your adventures you always take your camera and Charlie always remembers to remind you about it just in case you forget and brings along a second jacket in case you forget that too. Sometimes you listen to music together while hiking, taking turns on who chooses the music.

Along with your hikes you also have picnic dates. You precook the food at home and because Charlie is clumsy he normally stays out of the way due to the many accidents he had while trying to help you, spilling ingredients on multiple occasions. You and Charlie always hold hands especially when on dates.

He thinks you're so cute, he himself often takes comfort over style, and his clothes has become your clothes, stealing his hoodies all the time. Charlie could stare at you all day, committing to memory the specific shade of your eyes and the placement of your freckles and how much taller he is than you.

With your careful planning and Charlie's spontaneous personality, you balance each other, Charlie showing you it's okay to not have everything planned all the time and you showing Charlie that planning is important and valuable.

Gabi is starting to listen to hardcore metal and it's either yours or Reiner's fault.

On the other hand, Falco just discovered what lofi is.

Zofia 100% makes fun of him for not knowing it before, Her and Udo have it as a must when studying together.

Talking about Falco, yeah he's absolutely terrible with the Internet. Like the "taking clickbait videos seriously" type, don't leave him and Reiner with a phone unsupervised unless you want your bank information to be posted on a free fortnite skins page.

Reiner still takes pictures how dads do, an impossibly low angle with the worst quality.

One time him and the kids went to a waterpark and all the pictures Reiner took were blurry or the kids weren't even in the frame.

"But they're! Here look there's Udo's arm and Gabi's hair is visible under there."

From that day on you assigned Udo to be in charge of pictures, that boy is secretary talented in photography and has been begging his mom for a camera for his birthday for a while.

Reiner gives Udo the height boost for the perfect pictures by putting him on his shoulders.

Reiner is their favourite cousin, mostly because he can't say no to them no matter what. He's weak to any form of puppy dog eyes and the kids caught on to that pretty early.

Colt is a close second, mainly because Falco hypes him up so much.

They think of Porco as one of them, it doesn't register that he's almost as old as Reiner.

Each one of them have their favourite disney song to take the role of lead singer in, it's an unspoken rule that they respect too much to break.

Zofia makes Falco watch youtubers drama videos with her, only to say it was his idea afterwards.

Don't worry he's actually invested in it.

Times when you and Reiner have to watch Zofia alone are always the most calm. Usually because as long as you provide her with food, tv and a blanket, she isn't leaving the couch.

But watching Gabi alone? Oh boy, somehow watching her alone is more work than watching all of them at the same time.

Reiner's theory is that without the rest to distract her or balance off her chaotic energy, Gabi is bored. And a bored Gabi is someone to fear.

Without Falco for her to drag into her mischiefs or Udo and Zofia to recruit into her plans. Gabi will target you and Reiner, yes she will attempt to rule two grown adults.

It almost works.

Watching Falco alone isn't as..dangerous as Gabi but it's always the most mind consuming. Mostly because Falco won't leave you alone for 5 seconds before showing you something he did or asking if you need help with anything.

It's sweet yes, at the start. Now it's 3am and you're shaken awake to a smiling Falco with a tablet on his hand, showing you his sonic-suna that he drew himself. Aren't you proud? Please praise him.

Falco will sleep between you and Reiner in the bed, he can't stay alone, and yes he requires you both to be there.

If you aren't careful he will attempt to drink some of your coffee in the morning.

Now Udo, it's always a 50/50 gamble with him.

Either he will be the most well-behaved kids who occasionally shares interesting facts about Animals and show you a book he's reading.

Or he will cry 10 minutes after he arrives. He can't help it he really misses his mom and his friends aren't there, comfort him and hug him. Tell him you're his friend and Reiner's big brother side will activate whenever that happens.

As a result Reiner and Udo are actually the closest, they even text daily but shhh don't tell the rest that or they'll get jealous.

After that the rest of the day with Udo is actually pretty calm. You just need to pay attention to him whenever he starts to get anxious.

He won't ask to sleep with you on the bed but you can see he really really wants to, so please invite him in.

But he will share to you disturbing facts about whatever you're watching, you canceled three shows because of that.

Okay now I need your take on Luke Newton because I have the suspicious that you don't like him 😏 (or anything S4 related 😂) please tell me I'm not wrong and he is actually not attractive, because I find him charmless!!! but I'm scared to say it because a lot of people stan Colin and would kill me lol PD: without wanting to start another arguing I don't think S2 will be more popular nor more watched than S1, the story is way better but the release timing of S1 had a lot to do with the success

I AGREE SO MUCH OMG.

I was pretty much indifferent to Colin's character in the show because I found him bland and uninteresting, which I thought would change when I read his book (knowing it was a fan-favourite) but I just found him charmless and kind of annoying instead?? He has his cute moments in books other than his own (meddling with his siblings etc) but that's pretty much it. I don't think he says much as a male lead, I just hope s04 has some good Kathony and Benophie b plots tbh.

(And like okay, it's not like I was crazy for Simon or Daphne as characters in the book, but if season one proved something is that casting hot people who have chemistry with each other makes all the difference. 🔥)

I don't have anything against Luke Newton and objectively he's not unattractive, he's just so.......meh. He looks like someone in a boyband or a Disney show star that a teenager would have a crush on. Definitely not the guy I'd pick as a male lead for an adult female-oriented romance series that became infamous for its raunchy sex scenes.

And it doesn't even have to do strictly with physical attractiveness either. For example, if I'd never watched the show and you just showed me a picture of Luke Thompson I would probably shrug him off as bland, but there's he was just so charming in his role that he won me over immediately (which also made it much easier to turn a blind eye to his book flaws when I read aofag lol). He may not be Regé-Jean Page or Theo James appearance wise, but he can 100% pull off hot!!

Don't worry, you're not starting an argument, I unfortunately fear the same re the popularity of season 2. Timing combined with the fact that Simon and Daphne's season was the one that introduced the show to a mainstream audience (and brought the genre of romance into the spotlight the way it did!) was pivotal in the popularity of s01, so it makes sense that viewership could drop in season 2. Which frustrates me to no end because season 2 has everything that made the season one popular (attractive leads, explosive chemistry, female-gazey sex scenes) except on top of that the protagonists are also much more interesting and their love story is by far superior..... It's just not fair!!! 😭😭😭

Oh. Oh dear. This ask threatens to expose a horrible secret... that it's been quite a while since I've read any! I am shame. But, I'll consult my bookshelf, and let me see what I can conjure up.

1) The Martian (Andy Weir) -- So, yes, there is a film based on this book, most of us have either seen it or heard of it. I read the book after seeing the movie. I'm actually quite glad I did. While the movie did a surpassingly adequate job of translating the source material, the book adds far greater depth to the circumstances, and demonstrates the breadth of research its author conducted to ensure scientific accuracy. (Mark Watney makes a lot of mistakes in the book, which humanizes him more in my eyes.)

2) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) -- Can you really beat a classic? I'm not sure you can. Whether you're a loyalist to the BBC adaptation produced in the late 80's or the more recent Disney take of the mid-aughts, neither of the films can quite do justice to the book itself, which was written after the author realized that his prolific pen had failed to produce material appropriate for children. The Chronicles of Narnia was the first novel series I ever attempted to read on my own in my childhood, and it kicked off with this entry.

3) Q-Squared [Star Trek: TNG] (Peter David) -- This book is certainly a love letter to a fandom, those who enjoyed and immersed themselves in the lore of the first two Star Trek TV series. Comic readers will recognize the author's name; Trekkies will be pleased and amused to see Q mentoring Trelane... and then quietly pleading with Captain Picard to help him because he finds Trelane obnoxious and unlikable. (Picard rightly notes the sheer irony here.) Some of the script is even formatted specifically to rivet you to your seat. I've reread it I don't know how many times, and have always stuck with it from beginning to end.

4) Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People (Nadia Bolz-Weber) -- Let me preface this by saying I don't proselytize. I grew up as the child of a minister of the Christian faith, and I am forever grateful that the values maintained in our home stemmed from one simple rule: "love everyone -- no exceptions". Whereas I've grown into an adult that has not attended church for many years and takes into frustrated and embarrassed account those who would claim to espouse those values but behave in completely the opposite manner, Rev. Bolz-Weber shares tales and vignettes from her deeply personal experience among the accidental saints of the world that restore, however briefly, my own faith in humanity. I can't read this book and keep my eyes dry.

5) The Red Wolf (S.R. Mateus) -- This one feels like a bit of a cheat, as I've been good friends with the author for many years and I was in fact the editor for this book. But I don't think it's tooting my own horn to say I'm friends with several published authors, and this is probably my favorite among the works my friends have produced. It's the first of an intended series, and while there's a great deal of world-building and setup that takes place, it has no shortage of action, nor of enrapturing characters.

I'm gonna tell you a story about something that happened to us about a week-and-a-half ago while we were on vacation in Disney World.

It's not a happy fun story.

It's not something uplifting or hopeful.

And.

If you've come out of or are currently in an abusive relationship...

Maybe this post isn't for you. No harm, no foul, I'll catch up with you on the next one. Because who this is for... is people on the outside. People who, when faced with dysfunctional and, perhaps, dangerous relationships in public.

And SPOILER ALERT.

I'm one of those people.

And... I'm hoping that someone out there has better answers than I do.

Or even an answer.

So here we go.

We're at the end of another Disney day. Kimmer 'n I indulged a little Epcot before boarding the monorail for the Magic Kingdom where today's gonna end in a thrill of fireworks, projection, music, and showmanship.

We take our seats and, by 'n by, a young, dark-haired woman in a summer dress enters the cabin and sits across from us, kind of jammed into the corner where the bench meets the window.

She's in her own head so we don't engage her like we do fellow travelers sometimes when we're out 'n about.

Shortly after she's settled in, a big guy enters the cabin and sits right next to her. And the reason I'm aware of this is that, while I wasn't specifically paying attention to his entrance, I did catch the moment where she's taken by surprise. As if a complete stranger just invaded her space.

They're shoulder to shoulder, these two. Thigh to thigh.

And she's obviously not into this.

She actually seemed shocked to me when he dropped onto the bench next to her, physically crowding her the moment he sat down.

And now she's pinned between this big guy and the window.

Before another heartbeat passes, I realize they're having a low-key argument. Low-key as in keeping their voices down while the intensity is up.

She is clearly pissed.

Apparently he's said something to her or called her a name... and she's calling him out on it. He responds right back, towering over her by the way, telling her that it's her fault that he said whatever he said or called her whatever he called her.

Now, on paper... this is a young couple having a fight. But in reality this is something more sinister.

The body size difference, for example.

The body language, the physical crowding.

The narcism, gaslighting.

And this:

They're fighting and he puts a big arm around her shoulders, reaches around and downward to grab her breast.

Kimmer's next to me growing ever more tense, urgently telling me he's escalating, he's escalating.

And there it is.

That moment where intervention has to derail an otherwise inevitable outcome.

Meanwhile, the argument across from us continues.

The physical crowding continues.

The intimidation and blaming.

And Kimmer's wondering who we can alert to what's going on.

She's thinking one of the Disney attendants. Maybe security (if only we knew where to find them).

And all the while what's happening right in front of us is unravelling.

Right there right now.

What I did next is something of which I'm neither proud nor ashamed. What I know, however, is that it's woefully inadequate in the scope of this young woman's life.

But it's what I can do.

I raise my voice to get the man's attention.

I actually have to raise it quite a bit to cut through the sound of the monorail in motion and his own intensity.

When I've go him, I ask

"Where are you kids from?"

Which seems to strike the right tone. Just travelers, he and I. Comparing notes.

"Where are you kids from?"

The question breaks him out of his headspace as he disengages from the young woman next to him, pivots his body to face me and, as genially as you please, introduces himself from Boston and the young woman next to him from...

I actually don't catch what he just said. Only that she's from some other city. West coast, maybe.

And so we talk like travelers do. Except that my mind's now racing on two tracks: one that's working overtime to naturally hold his full attention, the other trying to figure out what to do if this young woman really is in trouble and wants out.

How would we know that?

How would I know that?

I introduce Kimmer 'n I from Seattle, empty-nesters on vacation going to meet up with their young adult kids in the Magic Kingdom.

He tells us he's a marine. So I tell him about our youngest who's in the army. I tell him about her basic training. I tell him stories about the kind of challenges into which she's been thrown and how she's overcome all those challenges.

"It's amazing what you're capable of even when you don't know it" I tell him.

He immediately agrees with that statement based on his own experience.

Only...

I didn't actually pitch that thought for his ears.

And so on.

That monorail ride from Epcot to Disney's maybe... well, I don't actually know how long it is. All I know is I kept him talking from before the monorail left Epcot all the way through to the Transit Center plus a little bit more.

Call it about twenty minutes.

By the time the monorail came to a full stop, we all stood up to go... but I kept standing there talking to him, hoping that we'd get some kind of signal or sign from the young woman. Hoping that Kimmer had a better plan than my riff on Tales From The Thousand And One Nights.

And then it was time to go.

The whole time I was talking, the young woman never said a word. I never got a read on her because I was so focused on spinning out a conversation. And when we all stood up in the cabin, she was actually free of him. Not pinned. Not wedged. Just standing there on her own.

And then they turned and left together.

Kimmer 'n I watched them leave. And about halfway down the ramp he places his hand around her upper arm. The way you do to keep a child from running off.

I felt sick.

And I still feel sick.

And the question that's still rolling like a hamster ball is this:

What could we have done that wouldn't end up making her life worse for her?

Because my deepest worry in that moment on the monorail was that even with her cage door open...

She would've, might have still.

Been too afraid to fly.
