oh happily!!!
they live in some like, victorian style home painted a shade of green that could be mistaken for an office space in a neighbourhood full of them. this is the best visual reference i could find for how i picture it in my minds eye:
amanda built a ramp that they placed over the stairs so it's easier for lawrence on a daily basis
lawrence gets primary say over the interior decor because he technically pays the most in terms of mortgage/bills. which isn't to say adam and amanda don't contribute, because they do, but lawrence IS a surgeon who comes from a wealthy family. so it's only fair that he pays the most, and therefore it's only fair that he fills the place with weird statues and nice pieces of art and intricately carved wooden furniture and silk pillows. and also his clock that we see in the first movie.
however. adam and amanda DO also live there so they DO get somewhat of a say. which is why the house's overall decor has the vibe of "trust fund baby going through an emo phase."
adam and amanda kept sticking posters of bands and movies that lawrence has never heard of to the walls and he decided that it was ruining the aesthetic so he had them framed and now adam's crumbled old nine inch nails poster is hanging in an expensive frame next to some painting that lawrence paid an obscene amount of money for.
the kitchen is...surprisingly very domestic and homey. whether or not the weed and shrooms that adam and amanda are growing on the windowsill adds to that or detracts from it is a matter of personal opinion. but yeah! the fridge is covered in photos of the family and drawings by diana and bills and a grocery list that has everything from gourmet cheeses written in lawrence's unreadable doctor's handwriting, kerosene in amanda's chicken scratch, and pop tarts (FROSTED!!!!) in adam's surprisingly beautiful cursive. they have one of those bread/flour/sugar/rice/coffee/etc ceramic container sets and they are ALWAYS filled with the appropriate things. erratic collection of mugs including: one that 4 year old diana painted for lawrence for father's day, the one adam had made that just has a photo of his cat (bastard) on it, the world's worst serial killer mug that amanda got mark for christmas (he tried to bring it into work one time ""ironically"" and strahm nearly had an aneurysm). shelf absolutely stuffed with cookbooks and a homemade spice rack on the wall and a coat hanger with a bunch of embarrassing aprons (they intentionally bought pink ones with heart shaped pockets or cringe ones like KISS THE COOK because mark does a lot of the cooking and they love to see mark "built like a brick shithouse" hoffman in the most ridiculous aprons they could find). sometimes they work on smaller traps on the kitchen table but for the most part that is done in the basement.
murder basement is dark and gloomy and adam hates being in there because well. it's where they make murder traps. so he tried to liven things up in the most intentionally annoying way possible by putting like, fairy lights and lava lamps and beanbags everywhere. it's tacky and they all hate it but if lounging around on a beanbag is the only way for adam to spend more than five minutes there then so be it. the lock on the basement door is all rusted and they tell everyone that "oh we can't get it open haha we just don't use the basement" which is a horrible cover story but it works so. who am i to judge. the basement is also where they store their holiday decorations so there's stuff like a christmas tree and a dancing skeleton figure amongst their tools designed to maim and/or kill. they're kind of weird.
i think amanda isn't used to being allowed to have and keep things so she's a bit of a hoarder. i said this in my mandy hcs post but she's a big reader and doesn't ever throw out any of her books, which range from big hardcovers to tacky romance paperbacks that are falling apart. the bookshelf is full so there's random piles of them all over the house and she WILL somehow know if one is missing and there WILL be bloodshed.
erratic shared vinyl collection? erratic shared vinyl collection. erratic shared cd collection? erratic shared cd collection. erratic shared dvd collection? erratic shared dvd collection.
lawrence got full control over decorating his and adam's bedroom, which adam didn't really care about because they just use it to sleep and have sex. his only request was that he could hang up a bunch of photos of them (many with diana) and lawrence happily agreed. anyway. it's all a nice wooden bedframe and matching drawers and bedside tables and like, silk sheets and an incredibly expensive mattress. they have a little ensuite and the light is ALWAYS on in there because adam can't handle full darkness anymore, let alone in bathrooms. it's kind of boring but like. whatever. let the murder gays be boring in their love nest.
amanda's room is more all over the place, there's barely an inch of free wall space because again, a little bit of hoarder tendencies. she's got postcards and photos and ripped pages from books and magazines stuck up everywhere. lots of reds and purples with the upholstery and the curtains and whatnot. she's got a little desk that's absolutely covered in sketches and trap plans and poems and letters because she's always working on something. adam is forbidden from smoking in his and lawrence's room (tbh lawrence keeps trying to get them to stop smoking in the house but they don't listen) so he usually smokes with mandy in her room.
adam's cat bastard as her own room. bastard does not usually sleep in her room in her fancy pet bed, because cats are like that. bastard is banned from sleeping in adam and lawrence's room after she ate a bird (that was still alive during) on their nice silk sheets. there are dead things in bastard's room and more toys than any cat could ever have. nobody is allowed in there except bastard or adam unless they want to lose an arm.
the other spare room is for diana, and it is constantly changing because she is a growing girl and her interests are constantly shifting. it is on the top floor of the house and has a giant window that looks out into the backyard.
ik the backyard isn't really decor but they do have a very nice large one and adam has a vegetable patch that he tends to religiously. adam's green thumb is a shock to everyone given that he once tried to serve them pasta boiled in gatorade. but. he loves his vegetables and his fruits and his flowers so love is love. they also have a hammock and a back porch with rocking chairs on it.

Teenage girl with escapist attitude wants nothing more than to graduate and leave her past and her guilt behind, but the universe has other plans in store for her.
2. Pick one sight, smell, sound, feel and taste to describe the aesthetic for your novel.
Sight: an empty playground, vacant swing sets swaying to the cadence of the wind
Smell: the bitter aroma of ground coffee beans
Sound: the screeching cacophony of a guitar riff and thrashing drums
Feel: smoke softly caressing calloused skin, like a hesitant embrace

Probably, but I’ve forgotten them all. The story has been called SCIF since I started writing it 7 years ago.

It was a brisk September morning, the sun faithfully emerging from the horizon, pouring through the neighborhood, and illuminating everything in its wake.
7. What’s a dialogue you’re particularly proud of?
“All I’m saying is, maybe if you stopped running away and actually gave things a chance, you might discover something worth sticking around for.”
8. Which line from the novel most represents it as a whole?
Forgiving someone who’d hurt you was one thing. Forgiving yourself? That was a whole other ball game.
And as I said, forgiveness didn’t come naturally to me.

Cami (have no clue who she is but she’s so pretty, and she’s 100% Cami)

Mira’s :) her name is short for Amira which I think is really beautiful.

I’ll only do this for the really main characters:
Cami - jeans and a nice top. she wears light makeup. she isn’t one for accessories/jewelry but she doesn’t go anywhere without the ring on her finger.
Mira - changes styles frequently but a daily outfit for her would look like a crop top/halter top paired with black leggings + heeled boots.
Spencer: nondescript t-shirt, dark jacket and ripped jeans
Vince - t-shirt or tank top, low-riding jeans, necklace, and his trusty backwards cap
13. Do any characters have distinctive birthmarks/scars?
None that I have thought of, but Spencer has a tattoo on his inner forearm (originally it was of a phrase his grandmother said in Italian but I may change that).
14. Which character most fits a character trope?
Vince probably. He’s that fun, hate-that-you-can’t-hate-him, comic relief character that you see in a lot of stories. But he’s my lovable character :)
15. Which character is the best writer? Worst?
Spencer probably cause he’s just a literature nerd. Worst would probably be Vince, but only because he likes talking more than he cares to write.
16. Which character is the best liar? Worst?
Mira would be the best liar cause she’s devious/a little manipulative like that. Cami would be the worst because she hates lying, especially to people she cares for or respects (for good reason).
17. Which character swears the most? Least?
All my characters swear. I would say Mira swears the most and Noah the least on paper, but he swears like hell off-screen.
18. Which character has the best handwriting? Worst?
Cami :) Worst would probably be Vince, he writes like chicken scratch.
19. Which character is most like you? Least like you?
Cami is definitely the most like me in a lot of aspects. Mira is probably the least like me because she’s bold and daring and not afraid to call people out (I do not have the balls for that).
20. Which character would you most like to be?
Mira, for the exact reasons mentioned above. Also she’s just really cool I love her.

Takes place on the continent of Aegis between the Northern Kingdom, Thoran, and the Southern Kingdom, Ceres. General time period is that weird fantasy medieval time zone.

Not particularly? Originally All the King’s Men was just a placeholder but the more I fleshed out the plot and the more I decided to make it about women instead of just using that as backstory I felt the irony from the title fitted a lot more as time went on and now I really like it.

“The whispers clogged her ears like hair in a drain, disdain washed over her like slime and at this rate vague murder of the next noblewoman to side eye her was very much on the table.”
7. what’s a dialogue you’re particularly proud of?
"Everything i do for good will be attributed to someone else. My strength must have come from father. The throne given to me by you, as if i didn’t fight for it,” Kavi growled, a hand slamming against the table that kept her from strangling her brother. “Everyone will assume I am the puppet of someone else. They will rage when my council is full of women. They will froth at the mouth any time I do anything that uplifts the lower class or women. When i do good for everyone, they will assume a cardinal must have been behind it. If I get a husband, even worse, they will say it was thanks to him. But I have accepted my fate. Because frankly this country deserves better than our bastard of a father who fattens himself on the plight of the people, and you who clamber after his coat tails."
“Is that how you truly feel?” Vikan asked, almost reverently, as if the answer was some holy secret. Kavi snorted. “It’s how I’ve always felt you insensitive prick. It’s not like I’ve ever hidden how I feel, if anything I roared it from the battlements whenever I could!” she roared
“I’m so sorry…” he whispered “I only ever wanted to keep father happy. I only ever wanted a sister.”
“And I always wanted a brother, but we don’t always get what we want. Some of us have to fight for it. But you wouldn't know anything about that would you?"

It generally changes from what I’ve planned and I haven’t thought of any outside of Kavi soooo
Kavi: A dark, leather tabard with tails, under a flat metal breastplate. Her legs are protected by thick boots, greaves and sabatons. With vambraces and gloves and a sharpened blade at her side she’s always ready for battle.
13. Do any of the characters have distinct birthmarks/scars?
Kavi has a scar across her nose and going up the left side of her jaw that she got from a bar brawl. “On the upside, my father can’t marry me off for my face”
Noir has a scar on her throat as mark of her place as a Ceresan Assassin to the crown. Those women are extra.
14. which character most fits a character trope?
Kavi fits the violent princess trope, Ely is the “So competent, she could take the goddess to task if she showed up with the wrong paperwork”, Aera is the dangerous airhead and Noir is the silent assassin.
15. which character would be the best writer? worst?
Grey and Virin would probably be the best writers because Grey reads so many scriptures and has probably picked things up. Virin however is a Courtesan, her entire job is to use words to sway her audience, in this case the audience is her marks but it can easily be switched to readers. Oddly enough, maybe Kavi in that way that her drunkenness could fuel a lot of plotlines, but other than that she would probably be the worst in the group because she is too blunt and doesn’t like to mince words like authors would.
16. which character is the best liar? Worst?
Virin for the aforementioned reason, ie its her entire job. The worst would be Aera, the sweet little airhead that she is, would probably be the worst liar.
17. which character swears the most? least?
Ironically not Kavi, it’s Ely when she’s drunk which, doesn’t happen often as a result. Aera swears the least.
18. which character has the best handwriting? Worst?
Kavi has the best hand writing weirdly enough, whereas Ely has chicken scratch “but in my defence… yeah I got nothing.”
19. which character is most like you? least like you?
It’s probably Ely?
20. which character would you most like to be?
A weird mix between Kavi and Grey. I want Kavi’s ability to do the right thing damn the consequences and trust my decisions no matter the cost. But I also really want Grey’s peace of mind, her ability to have faith, not necessarily in a god, but her faith in the world and the people around her.

Because I have to start this blog off somehow! Say hello to some random facts about One Siren’s Soul.
... what, what do you mean I could post some actual writing? Pfft, no.
I actually got this game from @thelysstener‘s blog and thought it was pretty cool! I wasn’t tagged or anything but I really like doing tag games. Hope you don’t mind!
1: Describe the plot in one sentence
Magical things get stolen from magical people, forcing a siren, a sea witch, a pirate, and a legend of the Royal Navy to begrudgingly work together to get them back. (Aka: A study in how Quill doesn’t know how to write story pitches yet)
2: Pick one sight, smell, sound, feel, and taste to describe the aesthetic for your WIP. (I definitely did not follow the “one” thing but too bad)
Sight: The soft, welcome blues of the sky peeking through clouds of a dispersing storm, the ocean below calm despite its froth of foam drifting across rippled dark water.
Smell: Salt and drying seaweed and rotting fish. And then a permeating, engulfing scent from the ocean that you can’t place or describe, like the very depths of its soul. Magic.
Sound: The howl of wind through a cave opening, a background of distant waves crashing amidst sea bird’s cries.
Feel: The crackling of static electricity through your fingertips as you smooth down the folds of your clothing on a stormy day.
Taste: The slight tang of something metallic. Is that blood, or sweat, or metal? Or all three? (Or the tears of my future readers?)
3: Which 3+ songs would make a playlist for your novel?
I’m normally better at making playlists for things but in this case I was really picky, so...
Your Bones by Of Monsters And Men (Probably one of the biggest inspirations for the overall aesthetic and just... feeling of my wip.)
Sirens by Fleurie (The name and lyrics of this song fit in both definitions of the word.)
Coastline by Hollow Coves (There’s... a happy song on this list? What?)
4: What’s the time period and location in which your novel takes place?
Early 18th century on an alternate Earth in the North Atlantic.
5: Are there any former titles you’ve considered but discarded?
So uh. Funny story about that. One Siren’s Soul was originally going to start with ‘A’ instead of ‘One’. I realized pretty quickly why that wasn’t such a good idea, and also I just like how it sounds more, now?
6: What’s the first line of your novel?
Mmmmm this is a first draft, mate, I don’t wanna touch that just yet.
7: What’s a line of dialogue you’re particularly proud of?
Oh, jeez. All of the ones I really like are heavily context dependent or ridden with spoilers. In lieu of those, have a somewhat-kinda-funny one:
“Colin! Nice to see yer up. Or, well. Down.” - George, right after Colin falls flat on his face in front of him.
8: Which line from the novel most represents it as a whole?

9: Who are your character(s) face claims?
I’m definitely not the most set on these (especially for Io and Dione), but:

Isabel - Camila Cabello
Io - Kirby Griffin
Rose - Nivetha Pethuraj

For some reason these sorts of things are always tough for me? I myself don’t fit in only one so I think that’s worn off on my characters. Here’s some approximates, though:
Gryffindor: Phoenix, Isabel, Colin
Ravenclaw: Dione, Alixandre
Hufflepuff: George, Sheila
Slytherin: Rose
I can’t decide whether Celestine is in Ravenclaw or Slytherin, and Io’s stuck somewhere between Gryffindor and Slytherin.
11: Which character’s name do you like the most?
Chichima is probably my favourite. Who’s that, you ask? Nyehehee.
Including full names it’d probably be Phoenix Solarin because if that isn’t the most over the top thing to name a pyro I don’t know what is.
12: Describe each character’s daily outfit:
I’m just... gonna do my PoV characters, since I have too many characters in general, and fashion (especially historical) is not my strong suit.
Celestine: Maroon, long-sleeved dress; long, cream woolen scarf; and a pair of dark brown, lace up leather boots.
Colin: Simple white tunic; red and multi-coloured knit sash around his waist; brown trousers; and black cavalier boots (but to be honest he goes barefoot way too often).
Phoenix: Simple white blouse; bright red sash around her waist and as a headband; dark trousers; and buckled black leather boots. She gets a scarlet frock coat with gold trim later on.
Dione: Honestly, I have no idea how to describe Dio’s clothes. Other than black felt boots and a light green dress-like thing, I know she has a billion hidden pockets and a giant, hooded, fur and wool cloak that covers over all of the rest of her clothes so you can’t even see them. I dunno.
13: Do any characters have any distinctive birthmarks/scars?
Phoenix has a tattoo of crossed cannons somewhere (and also her, you know, vitiligo), George probably has a couple sailor’s tattoos as well, Isabel only has one arm, Celestine is missing her whole left eye, and Io has very distinctive scarring that she hides and is totally not going to become plot important at all.
14: Which character most fits a character trope?
Maybe Sheila? She’s the sweet and kind old lady shopkeeper who has all the best juicy gossip for our main cast to conveniently learn of.
15: Which character is the best writer? Worst?
Dione. Just. No competition. She writes poetry in her free time. She keeps a diar—I-I mean journal. Also she has actual training in writing but you’re not supposed to know that so shhh. Worst is probably Colin. He can barely read due to his dyslexia and as a regular deckhand he never really had the need to learn anyways.
16: Which character is the best liar? Worst?
You’d think it’d be actual thief and criminal Celestine but no, it’s Phoenix. Also another character I can’t mention because spoilers. Worst would be Colin. That comes up a lot. Sorry, Colin.
17: Which character swears the most? Least?
Rose. Swears. A LOT. Celestine does in Spanish. Least would probably be Alixandre because he’s just... too sweet. Too innocent of a boi.
18: Which character has the best writing? Worst?
Dione also has the best handwriting, since spoiler reasons but also she’s just like that. Colin’s handwriting isn’t the best, but it’s actually Io’s absolute chicken scratch that takes the cake for the worst. You wonder how people can even read her ship logs.
19: Which character is the most like you? Least like you?
Fun fact: Colin was originally based on another character of mine that was originally based on a sona form of me. So. His clumsiness is a new development, I don’t have that, and I’m apparently really good at lying, so there’re some differences. (Also I’m a writer and he can barely read. Oops.) But that obliviousness? That absolute clueless, distractibility? That inability to sit still? Those terrible puns and attempts at being socially adept? That’s me.
20: Which character would you most like to be?
I think Phoenix? You’ll find out why that is in the book, ‘cause her true personality isn’t quite the one people think of her as having, but... yeah. Phoenix is fun.

Anon Archives Vol. 3
I think I already answered a similar question in a previous anon archives, but just in case - most of the time I make my own textures and I may release them publicly one day! In the meantime though, WebTreatsETC has a wonderful library of subtle grunge patterns. The trick to textures is “less is more” so the more concentrated the imperfections are, the better.

This isn’t the case with everything. Depending on the subject of your drawing you may want different consistencies. Objects and materials like metals or concrete might require harsher textures as a guide when painting, but for character illustration I’d highly recommend the subtle approach.
Mhmm, well, I’m so bad at explaining... Let me try. I’ll make a proper breakdown one day! (awkwardly written tips under the cut)
Babies and small children have very soft features. They have round, undefined jaws, large eyes with small mouths & noses. As a child grows older, their eyes adjust and grow into their fully developed skulls but, in their early years they can look disproportionately large. You can use this to your advantage in character illustration!
Women typically have curved, rounded features but that’s not always the case. Genetics determines a whole lot when it comes to appearance, so females can inherit masculine traits and vice versa. If you’re going with a typical feminine approach, then rounded eyes, thin eyebrows and delicate chins/jawlines will help. I urge you to experiment, but start simple like this!
Men typically have more chiselled , angled bones with deeper-set features, but as I said before that’s not always the case. Low-set eyebrows and smaller eyes are, in my opinion, the part of the face that most determines “masculinity”, but sharp jawlines with high or wide cheekbones are equally important.
That being said though, it all depends on the character you’re designing. Your character’s age, weight and genetics determines a lot. Many of men have soft features and women can develop sharp jawlines, noses, small eyes, etc. Have fun!
Hey there! That’s an interesting question, because lately I’ve been fluctuating. If I’m well rested and focused, a full piece can take anywhere from 6-8 hours, but depending on the complexity of the piece and other factors like concentration levels, motivation and my mental state - a single piece can take a day or several.
Thank you very much! I wish I could have faith in my character design “process” enough to teach you in confidence, but the truth is a lot of my choices are down to intuition and my own personal aesthetics. Uhm, I can try giving you some pointers though!
It helps to have a rough idea of your characters personality, disposition or backstory first. An individual's appearance can often reflect who they are underneath. It can determine if they are well dressed, if they look after their appearance or what kind of style they carry themselves with. A sad or depressed person may look worn or unkempt. Alternatively, they may be the exact opposite - and have an immaculate complexion in an attempt to hide it from others. It’s all about their personality!
Having a “theme” can do wonders. Much like using fixed colour pallets in art, having a word, object or animal as a reference can help draw parallels between the symbolism and their design. for example:
Wolfe is made to resemble a wolf, so his hair has little tufts and his eyes are yellow. He has claws, sharp canines, and an aloof disposition
Rose, as her name suggests, resembles a rose. She has a prominently red colour pallet, a petal-like birthmark on her eye and subtle blue accents to make her details pop.
Hunter’s appearance purposefully contrasts with his profession as a priest. He’s gruff, strong, foreboding and a man of few words.
Definitely cartoon! I just got so smitten with comics as a kid, I went from still life painting to cartoons pretty quick. So quick that I never really had a true “realism” phase. But I can certainly still appreciate it.
I’m pretty sure everyone’s style is an amalgamation of the things they loved about other artists growing up. By all means, if you wish to take inspiration from my art then go ahead - it’s an honour! I only ask that you don’t copy or replicate my art. Be open to all kinds of style. Experiment and adjust. It’s more fun that way!

I have been using the UGEE 2150 monitor tablet for maybe...a year and a half now. It was by far the biggest investment I’ve ever made on a graphics tablet but it was worth it, and is still cheaper than a Cintiq by a country mile (retailing at about £340)
He’s a big boy, but he’s reliable, responsive, and feels great to work with. I had a lot of issues with SAI when I set up my dual-monitor workspace and it seems to be a frequent issue with UGEE products, but I did eventually find a workaround and the tinkering was well worth the money I saved. The screen is 21.5 inches and it weighs in at around 8kg total, so he’s not ideal if you travel a lot. However, if you have a fixed workspace environment he’s a keeper!
A Malignant without a host is pretty much powerless. They have no ability to manipulate physical matter, so words are their most powerful weapons.
When a Malignant has a host and is possessing their body, they can do all the things a human can. If a hosted Malignant is apparated but isn’t possessing anything, then they can still manipulate their host’s body but nothing else.
For example, if Ghasper is apparated but is not possessing Wolfe at the time, then he can still touch Wolfe, but not Hunter or Rose.

Uhm, well Malignants still know enough about their time spent alive to tell you all about that stuff. Their names, voices, etc helps. My ghosts don’t have genitals.
