hey, so I'm trying to figure out what places would be good to sell my own art at, and I'm wondering- what has been your experience with selling on etsy? I've heard mixed reviews from people, and I want to know your perspective as an etsy seller.
etsy is not perfect but i think it gets a little more shit than it deserves, i've thought about opening my own website but generally i'm actually pretty okay with the services i get on etsy compared to what it costs so i'm just gonna make a subjective pros/cons list for you under the cut (because its loooong)
oh and if anyone else has experience selling on etsy and would like to add their two cents in the replies/reblogs please do!
Pros
⭐ The search function - this is etsy's biggest selling point. it already has a dedicated userbase of millions of people and a search feature to help them find your shop, which takes a lot of the load of marketing off your shoulders, and marketing is a huge factor for pushing sales. i am not good at marketing and a lot of my sales just come from people searching my stuff up lol
⭐ Purchase protection program - if USPS loses or damages your package, you file a missing package report and they confirm they don't know where it is, Etsy will refund your buyers order out of their own pocket (under $250). this is my favorite etsy feature because USPS likes to eat packages every now and again. delicious keychains. if you had your own storefront, you'd just have to replace the order yourself.
⭐ Share & Save program - every time someone makes an order on your shop through a special Share & Save link, etsy will refund you 4% of the fees. it's a nice perk to doing some of your own marketing and it helps combat the moderately high etsy fees!
Trackable letter mail - selling stickers but think it's insane to charge $4 shipping? you can buy letter mail labels for about the rate of regular postage, which is like .65c. this tracking is done through etsy though so you can't track with usps, but it does give customers a little peace of mind. this only works in the 50 US states though.
Customs forms built into your shipping label - shipping internationally is a nightmare. etsy makes it easy though, generating everything you need to ship internationally on one label that you just have to sign and date and slap on your package like normal. for some countries they will actually just have your package sent to a domestic facility where they literally do all that for you. this is miles easier than having to do all that paperwork yourself.
buy shipping labels directly from etsy - related point, and just what it says on the tin. when you fulfill an order, you can buy your labels right there on Etsy so you don't have to mess around with a third party website. it comes out of your sale funds so you don't need to charge a card or a bank account or anything.
star seller program - some people say this is completely useless but i actually disagree! it's incredibly easy to earn this badge, and it lets buyers know you've got some of the best products, shipping, and customer service around. it helps you stand out from some of the more... questionable shops on the website.
sales tax - they remit sales tax for you. i don't think any of the other online platforms similar to etsy do this but i could be wrong. doing any kind of taxes sucks so i consider it a perk if they do it for you.
website promotions - every now and again etsy likes to host sales out of their own pocket. you get all the perks of having a sale without eating into ur profit margin. HUGE sale booster
generally the site is just very easy to learn and use and it's very beginner and dumbass friendly. i say this as a former beginner and current dumbass 👍
Cons
❌ the fees. oogh the fees. they claim it's just a 6.5% fee per sale, but on top of that you have to pay .20c automatically for every individual item you sell, plus there are processing fees (3% + .25c) that apply both to the item you sold AND the cost of shipping. i think it comes out to like 10% total in fees on average @ > @
❌ but wait, there's more fees! if you make more than $10k in sales a year (very easy number to hit actually) you are forced to participate in offsite ads, which i believe takes 15% of your total sale on top of the fees in the previous point. these kinds of sales are not as common as you'd think, but it's still annoying having a couple bucks shaved off your profits a few times a month because of them.
corporate bullshit - etsy is like renting a space in a mall. you don't own your lot, nor the mall itself, so if upper management decides to make any stupid ass decisions, you just have to deal with it or pick up and move. if they decide to raise fees again, you just gotta Deal. you are a little bit helpless on this website unfortunately
the push for discounts - etsy is constantly shoving it in your face that they want you to do discounts. they want you to have free shipping on orders over $35, they want you to do 25% off or more on sales, they want you to have returning customer discounts and abandoned cart discounts and 'you recently favorited this item' discounts - but you already have to compete with the steep fees, and when a customer gets free shipping, you still owe USPS that $4-ish bucks to send the package. you don't have to do any of this, but they do reward participating shops by favoring them in the algorithm and search results, so you can feel like you're missing out.
there aren't as many cons imo but they Are steeper cons. generally etsy is very beginner friendly and easy to get into and set up, and in spite of everything i do actually recommend everyone looking to get into online retail start on etsy and perhaps move to other platforms in the future. plus, you can combat all the fees by just... making your prices a dollar or two higher than you initially wanted to, and using your 'save and share' link as frequently as possible. the fees are a little bit much, but you have to think about what you get in exchange:
the search is invaluable, you could argue the fees are partially a marketing budget lmao. if you have a private website you alone have to push traffic to your website, and not as many people know about things like shopify and bigcartel so they might not be as trusting putting their card details into it. i miss out on a lot of REALLY COOL STUFF because artists only advertise on instagram and i don't hear about them, meanwhile if i want some cool owl house stuff i can literally just search that in etsy and find a lot of TOH stuff super easily. i cannot highlight enough how GOOD the search function is, especially in this day and age where social media like instagram and twitter will blacklist your posts if you say words like 'shop' or 'sale' and now nobody can find your stuff in that website's search either. its very hard to do your own marketing now a days :(
being able to refund customer's lost orders out of the company's pocket is such a nice thing to fall back on if you have to and worth its weight in fees. USPS lost like... four or five packages of mine in december. that's like $100 or more worth of stuff that Etsy Covered Completely, and a lot of the times the customer will take that refund to make their order again. don't abuse this system, make sure you check with usps that the package is actually Gone, but it's a godsend when you don't make billions of dollars and eating the cost of lost orders would otherwise sting a bit.
if etsy did not make international shipping easy i simply would not ship anywhere but the US to be honest. shipping to europe is still a headache though but that's because europe is stupid
that's everything i can think of, but tl;dr yes please open an etsy 👍 i recommend it completely in spite of everything

Yeah ofc, heres what I submitted (acceptance for class of 2025)!!! This isn't everything, but Tumblr has an image maximum lol.
Tips for if you're applying to RISD (or any art school rly, I got into a couple other schools with w good scholarship options), it wasn't just portfolio that led to an acceptance. I had a 4.5 GPA in highschool + I linked to my portfolio website & had extracurriculars & solid LORs. A portfolio should be strong, but usually a good track record as a student/good academics tip them over (so if you're not absolutely sure about your portfolio, your academics might push your app over the edge. Conversely, if you have struggled/haven't scored high academically, you still have the portfolio so put your efforts in there!). they do require a description of your artwork so I'd recommend you think about what you want to do conceptually (why did you draw this, what do you want viewers to come away with? Any big concepts?). You'll want to show off technical skill and conceptual ability; colleges love someone who can critically think (even if it's just the appearance of it, lol). A good portion of my works were social realism/focused on social justice. I submitted a landscape or two too (typically versatility is a good idea). I also think that my sketchbook was probably a deciding factor, I'll reblog w some of it later. Generally tho if you're applying to art schools good luck!!!! Don't worry too hard-- the college you first go to isn't the beginning of end of the world. Have fun with your art :)

i wish i had some amazing life changing advice for you but the truth is that it's painful to be outcasted from your family and the trauma that comes with it doesn't leave your body for a long time. once i was safe i started to unpack everything and its a long process but really worth it when u start feeling grounded and less anxious
i'm not muslim but my family is so i was raised with islam and they did a lot of stuff to try to deter me from living my truth including literally kidnapping me while we were in bangladesh right before my flight back. the entire family would talk shit behind my back and only "respect" me to my face to keep up the niceties
it's family and that makes it hard to let go and accept that they may never come around, at least not in this life time but surrounding yourself with friends and support - your chosen family is so important. we have to help each other because who else will yknow
community is so important for queer people so i encourage you to seek out other queer people any way you can in real life and online. i don't know what country you live in but i've found even in the most homophobic conservative countries the queer groups are there even if very underground and disguised as other things. i hope you can get in contact with some queer organizations and hopefully they can help you gather funds and help with your move. also message me privately with ur city and if its my city or one i'm familiar with maybe i can find you some resources
for me queer organizations literally saved my life. when i ran away i stayed in an apartment run by a queer youth shelter and they weren't perfect, they had a lot of faults but it gave me sanctuary away from my abusive parents and a chance to explore myself and be a normal kid for a while (i was 17). queer organizations also helped me get many things; clothes, hygiene products, chest binders, hrt, support applying to aid programs, doctor appointments when my insurance was a mess bc i was a literal child and had no idea how to navigate healthcare. it was just a really good thing for me to have as i transitioned into adulthood on my own.
so i say find all the mutual aid and organizations available in your area connect with at least one queer person in real life and its likely they will know others and slowly you can build your network of resources. take care of yourself best u can, try to eat well and drink enough water, get outside at least once a day, journaling and listening to music helps me a lot with processing emotions, confide in ur girlfriend or friends, do ART i really recommend this one it can be very therapeutic and healing. any type of art- drawing, painting, knitting, photography, dancing, singing etc it's good to express yourself in some way when everything else feels so restricted. try to have something for yourself to keep holding onto hope when things get really bad like maybe a pin, some type of token to remind you of your truth and that things won't be this way forever. remember that the entire queer community would back you up in a heartbeat and so many people will love you that you haven't even met yet!

hey man, im new here, read the rules and everything. couple questions. -not-a-degen-anon
if i write to fill in a prompt on tumblr, do i need to put it into the nasuverse kink collection on ao3 like that recent medusa prompt that was sent.
for fanart in general, i do sketches so im not sure how that'd work, like a 1-2 page comic or fanart of said characters doing stuff w.o dialogue? but in general for art, if i fill a prompt i still gotta tag it onto the ao3 collection you guys have ?
for old prompts on ur dreamwidth smth, should i still add that onto the ao3 collections?
do you necessary want us to tag you on tumblr for any claims or stuff we did for the prompt, like i have an acct but i barely use this site since its been 6 years. also, since you guys crosspost on ao3 for any stuff that was filled/done should i sent you a link for a completed work i did if you guys didnt see it or reblogged about it? if things get buried

The ao3 collection exists for three reasons:
Archival. When people want to look up the fills that have already been filled, a lot of them find it easier to go on a full ao3 list you can sort by tags and such, rather than on tumblr where you have to wade through every fill ever made to find what interests you.
So that I, personally, can see it, and crosspost it here. Usually, people directly message me here when they've done a fill. But sometimes they don't, and so the only way for me to know a fill exist is if something new has been added to the ao3 collection. If you make a fill, but don't add it to the collection & don't inform me of it, I will not crosspost it here (because even if I see it, I will assume you don't want to be put on blast for whatever reason. Privacy is important.)
(Not relevant to your question but) so there is a way for people to send prompts/do fills that does not rely on tumblr.
What I mean is: adding your fill to the ao3 collection is optional. If you don't want to add your fill there, it's fine. Plenty of people do fills outside of ao3 (namely art fills, but we've gotten some fics via tumblr and google doc too) and can't add them to the ao3 collection. That's fine too. I would prefer of you added your fills to the ao3 collection because it makes things easier for me as a mod, but don't worry about it. It's not mandatory. This applies to the dreamwidth prompts too, if you fill a prompt from there you can add it to the ao3 collection, or not. Up to you.
Likewise, you don't need to tag me on your fills. It's just one way people have to inform me that they've done a fill. If you'd prefer send me an ask with a link to your fill, that is perfectly fine. (Or use the submission box, this one does not require to be logged on tumblr, it might be more useful to you?)
TL;DR: The ao3 collection + tagging me on tumblr are just ways to inform me a fill exists, if you want to do things differently that's fine by me. If it's been a few days and your fill still isn't up, feel free to send me a message, it's possible I missed it.

we could argue opinions all day, but it's a dick move for someone to tell u what u can and can't post. if someone doesn't like ur posts they should just leave. it's more important to have fun than to please everyone, plus there's no way to make EVERYONE happy. the fact that ur not hurting anyone is what's important. if ppl don't like fake lines on a screen kissing, they can go look at some other lines lol.
I mean, this all certainly true. And I'm also very glad of your reminder that you can't please everyone. I definitely needed that reminder.
But the thing is they weren't telling me what to post or not to post. (At least, not directly, though one could certainly make the argument that it was heavily implied via disgust and judgment.) It was just a message of their immediate emotional reaction (surprise and abhorrence) that I reblogged the Lutecest art.
Like I already have said, I personally do not care one way or the other about the pairing itself, about twin/incest pairings, or even other "odd", "troubling", "problematic" ships. (Mostly speaking in general here, children/underage paired with adults for example obviously not okay in my opinion.) My personal crisis came from the crossed wires of forgetting fiction and fantasy is for playing around and is very much not the real world, but applying my morals and ethics all the same as if it were.
But something I think is important to point out with your ask is that, yes, while someone dictating what you should and shouldn't do on your blog is not okay, someone only giving their opinion, even if it's different from yours is not necessarily the worst thing. One of the YouTubers I watch a lot once talked about appreciating coming into contact with different opinions because then he compare his own to them and see whether he actually agrees with them or if it only reaffirms his own opinions and beliefs. It makes him reexamine his thoughts and beliefs and if he should still hold onto them. And make him question any that he may not have even realized he held.
That's all the ask did. No, I'm not hurting anyone. But neither did their ask hurt me either. Just made me question where I stood with twin/incest ships and unconventional ships in general and the conflicts, the dissonance between different thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that I had.
I know you were only being supportive (and I greatly appreciate it! I very much sincerely do!!) and I know that I was being very vague about it (apologies aplenty for that, my mind was in a swirl of thoughts then and I was trying to process it all and didn't want to say much until i had) and that most of the time when people say they got a not-good message about unconventional ships it's usually a terrible thing like you said, but it's all good, truly!
Like I said in the response to the first ask itself, I will be tagging ship posts better in the future and even go back and edit old ship posts soon so they too are better tagged. That way people can still enjoy normal BFS content and choose not to see specific ships via Tumblr's filtering system.
In a way, it's a solution that makes everyone happy, huh? ;)

i hope all of u transmisandry truthers realize that ur literally parroting terf ideaology by trying to subscribe to the idea that transmascs are Oppressed Because Of Their Sex. like. there is no such thing as afab oppression. trans men face transphobia and misogyny, which includes mistreatment AND lack of access to resources. that is not unique to trans men. women experience misogyny in society, and society doesnt believe trans men exist/are men, therefore = trans men get treated as if they are women, which includes mistreatment and difficulties obtaining resources. this is not hard to understand. there is no special form of oppression that trans men face that is unique among transphobia or in queer community. its just the combined result of misogyny and transphobia. it is not sex oppression (which doesn't exist). it is not ppl "hating men" and applying that to trans men. it's not transmisandry. get over urselves.

if i have the energy i try very hard to like...comment in tags of any art i reblog. i was trained in childcare job to give specific/intentional feedback in order to give kids a concrete idea of what it is youre praising them for ("great drawing!" vs "wow! it seems like you worked really hard on this dragon drawing! my favorite part is the big smile you drew!" [+ an optional addition of "what's your dragon so happy about?"]) bc it shows that ur paying attention while also highlighting their choices and how they make you feel (+ optionally inviting further commentary from them which in my experience kids seem to really enjoy giving)
(this also doesnt have to be strictly related to their art , it can also be stuff like "great job!" vs "thank you for taking the time to help me put the chairs away. that was very generous and helpful of you!")
anyway i really recommend learning how to do this, and also applying it outside the sphere of talking to kids. its good practice for yourself on being able to articulate the stuff you like and also (ideally) makes the person who made the thing youre commenting on feel good too
that said, i wonder if people prefer having comments in tags or just if they'd rather have people straight up replying to the post. like is a rando replying to the post intrusive at all or is it the same thing as commenting on a fanfic or something where you dont necessarily know the person

(to preface, for this post im going to use trans rep as my primary discussion example but i think this line of thought could be applied to basically any marginalized group)
honestly regarding that last reblog and the essay i left in the tags, i dont want to hear anyone praising anything for ‘good representation’ or condemning anything for ‘bad representation’ ever again i think.
firstly because people are so braindead that they cant meaningfully identify either good or bad representation. everything that i like is good and everything that i dont is bad. anything created by any trans person is good and anything created by any cis person is bad. everything that is kind and saccharine is good and everything that is angry and miserable is bad.
(seriously if i have to see one more take thats like ‘media that centers around trans suffering is bad and harmful because i dont like it and it makes me uncomfortable it turns trans suffering into a profitable spectacle, and besides being trans can be a good thing actually its not all about pain’, im going to bite somebody. im sorry that a) u dont understand that sometimes the intent of the media or stories like that is to hurt u and make u uncomfortable, b) u dont understand that someone expressing the pain they felt Because they are trans, and that they wouldnt have felt if they werent trans, is a valid form of art and self expression, and u have no right to condemn them because u dont personally connect with it, c) u dont understand that media doing the bare minimum of including a trans character who isnt hatecrimed against isnt ‘celebrating transness’ and can absolutely also be turning trans pride into a profitable spectacle, and d) that ur making all of this my fucking problem. it is not bad or morally incorrect to connect with and represent pain, especially at the hands of bigotry. my god.)
secondly because arguably it will never fucking matter anyway until society at large comes to terms with and moves past whatever -phobia or -ism we decide to center the discussion on that week.
‘good’ trans rep is never going to change a bigots mind or heart because their problem isnt that they just havent learned the error of their ways: their problem is that they hate an entire group of people on the basis that this group of people threatens their status as majority, moral correctness/worthiness, controller, group in power, whatever—whether this is materially true or a paranoid delusion. likewise, ‘good’ trans rep is never going to be enough for trans people to feel validated because of the way society has been marginalizing and oppressing trans people for longer than most of us here have even been alive, and continues to do so. it will feel nice in the moment, to see that people outside of urself and maybe even outside of ur marginalized group dont think of u as subhuman waste, but that feeling will not last forever as long as hate crimes and bigoted policy keep getting real life trans people hurt, jailed, and/or killed. idk about anyone else but nowadays its incredibly difficult for me to feel anything but contempt, dread, numbness, looking at ‘good’ trans rep while all that stuff is still happening on the daily in real life. its like a pathetic consolation prize for putting up with the horrors of existing, ‘thank u for buying our product despite what feels like most people wishing u were dead, heres this cool sticker to acknowledge ur existence and ur status as one of the ones who doesnt Deserve to be dead because ur buying our product’.
‘bad’ trans rep is never going to push an indecisive person over the fence into blatant transphobia because, to a bigot, ANY trans rep in ANYTHING for ANY REASON is ‘bad rep’. childrens books with the softest, cleanest language possible to describe trans experiences are treated like manifestos written to radicalize our good pure innocent children into horrible sexually depraved monsters. drag queens and trans people interacting with children AT ALL are demonized and called pedophiles just for existing in the same space as children. hospitals that provide safe and necessary treatment to trans people as ONE of the services they provide are issued bomb threats for daring to care about peoples health. the HINT of anything to do with being trans is a call for outrage. yeah, that transphobic caricature in that tv show really sucks to see, but its not turning people into transphobes: it is broadcasting the already material reality that transphobes think of us as subhuman waste, deserving of ridicule At Best and total extinction At Worst. a person who becomes a vocal bigot after being exposed to ‘bad’ rep wasnt an ally before that changed their mind, they were just quiet. what is the point of ‘educating’ people how to spot ‘bad’ rep and call it out if all it does is reaffirm to us that we know how to spot it and condemn? how many transphobes have said ‘i thought trans people were demons and pedophiles for the longest time, but then a random tumblr user wrote a scathing review of this random trans character and how they were a totally unrealistic and nasty depiction of a trans person, and it just opened my eyes to the fact that trans people are actually people, turns out’? when that number is larger than the number of transphobes who have said ‘i didnt really know what to think of trans people before tucker carlson and matt walsh told me they were molesting our childrens minds, but now i know theyre a threat to society’, get back with me.
like. im so fucking tired at this point. im obviously very angry and passionate about this, but im tired too. im tired of people constantly trying to say that society is getting better, trans people are becoming more welcomed in society, because of the handful of trans characters in media and the pride shirts and mugs and shit that u can buy in chain stores, while literal atrocities happen every. fucking. day. i cant be okay or happy with ‘good’ trans rep anymore because it matters so little in the context of how people on the whole view trans people, and i cant be upset with ‘bad’ trans rep anymore because its a symptom of hate and ignorance, not the cause.
i reiterate.
society and corporations are selling us pride through hollow ‘representation’ in media and slogans on mugs for the express purpose of keeping us from fighting to FEEL pride. and all the glorious spotless squeaky morally clean rep in the world will not account for the absolute loathing i have felt from every other direction for years, and the loathing everyone else has felt for decades, and the loathing were all gonna continue feeling for god knows how much longer until people and politicians stop actively trying to criminalize and kill us.

things that i learned since ive started using makeup (part 2)
good skincare = good makeup!
skin will always look like skin, it will always have texture and bumps here and there. it will never look as smooth as it is on the internet or filters.
nude colours works best for eyeshadow (the most neutral pallete - suitable for all events)
no lip gloss? use vaseline :D
for smoother makeup: a tip: shave ur face! (not recommended for people that has their hair grow thicker every time they shave, but otherwise, it might be a good option for u :))
makeup in a very relaxed manner, it helps a lot rather than being in a rush
wash ur face before wearing any skincare or makeup to look fresher and feel cleaner!!
always double cleanse after 3-4 days or even weekly to prevent any breakouts since the makeup and sunscreen might be in your pores (and we don't want any of that, obvy)
clean ur brushes + beauty blenders every week if possible, we don't want any of that bacteria to go on our face (leads to pimples, breakouts)
if u have tanned skin, and u wanted to try nude colours, try doing an ombre to make the nude pop out and not flushed out (kusam) OR
you can use a brown lip liner, THEN apply the nude lipstick on ur lips, saw a lot of tanned beauty gurus doing this on tt :3
use a cool undertone brown colour for contour (to create that shadowy effect!)
if ure doing makeup for an event, and u want to make sure ur hijab colour is not flushing out ur makeup or make it look weird, try wearing ur makeup with a similar colour hijab (ie; ur hijab for the event is white, so wear white during ur makeup session so you could know and identify what went wrong since diff colours could change how u look)
for people with hooded eyelids: eyeshadow: blend ur eyeshadow a little bit higher, near to the brow bone so ur eyeshadow is visible :D
wear ur headscarf first before wearing any makeup or ESPECIALLY before wearing mascara (i forgot this A LOT)
if u want to check how u look, check ur makeup in the mirror AND in the camera, trust me when u look bomb in both of those, ur makeup is at the level of perfection 💅🏻
smoother makeup tip: exfoliate ur face regularly (depends on ur skin type/needs) + MOISTURISE AND HYDRATION PEOPLE
use setting powder + setting spray at the end to make ur makeup stay longer
use a qtip if ur eyeliner went wrong and u wanna redo it!!
setting spray and finishing spray is different!
setting spray: to set ur makeup, make it stay longer etc.
finishing spray: to make ur makeup look like skin (basically make it look smoother as it melts ur makeup into one, helps for makeup that is heavy or look cakey after putting powder on)
so the sequence is: skincare > makeup > setting powder > finishing spray > setting spray :)
and yes, the last three steps are optional, depending on ur needs too! :DD
