Posting on main because my sideblog has still not returned from the Shadow Realm (though to be fair...my first support ticket from last week I don't think went through bc I never got a confirmation email so I just resubmitted it this morning...let's hope it only takes a few days!)
Anywho, I'm working on Chapter 5 of Idee Fixe, my Phantom of the Opera Modern AU fic, today and wanted to see if anyone had any preferences!

IDEA NOT FIXED
“…Thy body permanent, / The body lurking there within thy body, / The only purport of the form thou art, the real I myself, / An image, an eidólon…” —Walt Whitman A stereotypical modernist-bohemian “arteest” paints from a nude model. 1) He moves from behind the easel towards her. The chase is on. 2) He tries to grab one of her “lines” and it breaks; she escapes. 3) He tries again with a bear…

Inclement Idee Fixe (Visual Novel)
Created by: HimeBee
Genre: Romance/Horror
As a demo, this one is pretty short but man is Leumin's design cute, so it of course caught me a bit off guard when he did go yandere mode even though I knew it was coming. The theming of rain and general blue is pretty nice as well. If you want more information about this game you can find it at @hime-bee.
The story starts out with the Heroine being annoyed that the coffee place that they're working at going through renovations as their boss did not inform them of this. They notice that their tire is deflated and has to take the bus, only for it to start raining. Their boss emails them outside of work asking them to come over to his place the next day to give them something. After being cold in the rain for a bit, Heroine is greeted by a tall blue haired man, explaining that the bus won't be running for the rest of the day. He offers to walk the Heroine home as they don't have any other way to get back under his umbrella.
Regardless if the Heroine decides that it's safe to walk with a stranger, he'll introduce himself as Leumin (or Leu) before walking under his umbrella together. He talks about hobbies ( and gets very excited about talking about games) and we learn that he works at a florist as Heroine talks about how they're not good at growing plants. From there, they can either invite him to their place or go home by themself.
Inviting him inside for coffee will lead to the Heroine turning on the TV for Leumin to watch while they make coffee. Leumin of course, enjoys the coffee. Heroine gets a call from their boss basically stating she has to go back to the cafe to work on her day off because they're understaffed (which... ouch, you gotta go back in the rain) and Leumin and Heroine exchange numbers. Leumin is very happy that he was in Heroine's home before deciding to get rid of their boss.
The next day while getting ready to meet their boss for the letter, Heroine sees on the news that their boss has just been murdered, leading to them panicking for a spell. After messaging her coworkers and telling them that they were alright, Heroine gets a text from Leumin wishing them a happy day.
The Heroine can go to sleep and nothing really seems to happen.
They also can instead of responding to Leumin call one of their coworkers, Sam to come over, in which he happily agrees. Leumin is not happy with this development, rationalizing that his feelings haven't gotten through to Heroine yet and decides to get rid of Sam as well.
Heroine can also decide to call Leumin over, to which he does agree very quickly. Afterwards, Heroine describes their situation of the death of their boss to where Leumin reassures them by stating they can work in the flower shop instead. Heroine falls asleep next to Leumin, leading to Leumin's confession while they are asleep. Heroine wakes up on their bed and finds Leumin on their couch and decides to cook dinner for him.
Going back by themselves will lead to Leumin talking about how he actually was the one who slashed their tires and although a bit worried about their skepticism, is happy that they were able to meet as he knows all about them.
I will say that despite the fact that I knew that Leumin was a yandere, I still was caught off guard by his yandere behavior. It's probably because the game has a very cutesy vibe to it, a sort of rainy comforting vibe towards it that made me believe it would be a lot more of a light yandere than he actually is, which... he's not really. Leumin goes through a lot to be with Heroine, from slashing their tires so that they're forced to walk together with him in the rain, to possibly killing the boss depending on if Leumin is invited in and even killing Sam the coworker if they so choose to invite him instead. He seems to have been watching Heroine for a while now, and seems like a more calculating yandere than he first seems. That being said, he still retains his more deredere side when interacting with Heroine being shy but overall encouraging to them despite what kinds of troubles they have been going through. It's a cute contrast that a lot of yanderes have, but I do like it when a yandere is shy around their love interest, since not only is it cute, but it continues that kind of gap that yanderes have over their cutesy nature versus their more vicious one.
Like I said though, I am a fan of the more rainy vibes that this game has. It's a comforting feeling, like a melancholy meeting in the rain, which is likely what this style will encapsulate in contrast with the more violent tendencies. I assume the setting will likely have rain often as a theme, which can be cool.
Overall, a fun start to a game. Leumin is very cute (and tall) so I am curious to see what he will be in the future. I'm digging the vibe of the game so far though and I am curious to see what lengths Leumin will go for our dear Heroine.

Joseph Shabason and Nicholas Krgovich will be releasing their new album At Scaramouche, a follow up to their 2020 collaborative album Philadelphia. The first offering from the record is “I Am So Happy With My Little Dog,” a sweet diddy that spans just over 4 minutes long. The effervescence of the instrumental layers really lift you up and matches the warm sentiment of the track title. There’s a simplicity and earnestness to the track that is truly so infectious and it’ll have listeners feeling bubbly and at ease. “I Am So Happy With My Little Dog” is pure joy captured in a song - finding the peace and brightness in the smallest moments of life. And the song features one of the sickest guitar solos from Thom Gill!
At Scaramouche is out October 7 via Ideé Fixe Records.

Idée Fixe - Chapter 9 - NOW ON AO3!
This story has been raging 24/7 in my brain the past week. I've got the first Erik POV companion piece in there, as well as some middle chapters that became clear to me over the last few days.
That being said, this chapter fought me a bit and I ended up splitting it because I'm a wordy bitch (and I once heard that more frequent updates were preferred...and also I love the serotonin from comments so...YOLO).
READ CHAPTER 9 ON AO3
Read From Chapter 1 on AO3
CHAPTER PREVIEW:
The end of the semester approached in a flurry of French translations, finals, and fragmented sleep schedules. Christine was so consumed by her continued translation of the Carmen aria she barely acknowledged the passage of time. The only thing that kept her temporally anchored were her lessons; on the days when she saw Erik she at least knew it was either Tuesday or Friday. Soon the last week of classes arrived. An anxious energy permeated the campus, and the music building was no different. Dr. Meyers’ vocal class was rowdier than usual before class commenced, but there was not much to discuss regarding the class’s final exam. Those who had been assigned a private instructor had their own final assignments while the rest of the class would suffer a written exam the following week. Christine was not in the least bit worried about it, though she still planned to study.  As the last class of the semester was dismissed, Christine shouldered her bag and was making towards the classroom exit as usual when Dr. Meyers called her name.  “Christine. A word, please, before you leave.”

Has anyone ever given real names fictional etymology to give them some plausibility in a fantasy world? To give an example from something I did, the name Luke means light in the real world, but I gave it a different meaning: derived from the archaic words âleu (cheerful, joyous) and ękâuei (archaic form for kâui meaning spirit, soul).
So it means cheerful spirit in the fictional etymological context.
It evolved somewhat like this: Âleukę -> Âleuke -> Leuke -> Luke
I once knew a furry worldbuilder who had an idee-fix on making just that for like, normal-ass real-life names for his fictional world (in which he wanted to play seasoned and reflavored D&D in with friends).
He did some backwards etymology evolution like this for names like Christian, Jesus and stuff, giving them new meanings entirely based on soundalikes and homonyms combined with the power of wiktionary.org.
If I remember correctly "Chris" in his setting came from ancient word for "create", and the derivative names "Christian" and "Christopher" were something like "creating blue dye" and "creating glue", thus, "blue dyemaker" and "gluemaker".
But to be honest? I f'cking love that.

Hey, Red, I just got a idee fixe of starting my own webcomic, despite me having zero art skill and not having any concrete idea on what I want it to be about 😅 Just vague ideas on setting vibe (like Adventurers! if you've read that) and also wanting to have a transhet love story there (but more of a B-plot)
So, tangents aside, any tips for very (extremely) beginner comic artist?
At this stage in the process I suggest you sit down with a sketchbook - a physical one, even if you prefer digital art - and doodle every single idea you currently have in this space. Just cover the page with character designs, single disconnected cool moments, splash panels, anything that your brain is currently chewing on or going "THIS IS GONNA BE SO COOL". The vignettes you doodle can and should be extremely self-indulgent because the purpose of this exercise is to draw out the core of this fluid concept and get it into a physical form to examine more closely.
This is an exercise I still do sometimes when I'm working out the early stages of plotting a story. Even if the doodles don't resemble the final version at all, getting them out of my head and onto paper helps me solidify them. Did a few of those while working out the boards for the pages we're currently seeing, and while the specifics didn't make it to the final version unchanged, the vibes sure did!
Tumblr media
Sketching the highlight reel will also help you get better and more practiced at art, especially if you're new to it. In my experience it's easier to do the tedious early stages of practice if you have something to draw that you're really interested in drawing well.
A good way to think of it might be that you're doodling fanart of your work that doesn't exist yet. Low stakes, just for your own enjoyment and practice.

Good for them.
