Maverick has a breakdown and Ice and Slider try to put the pieces of Maverick's broken heart back together. Maverick and Ice are also dancing around feelings that they're afraid to address. Maverick is left with a huge choice: does he stay in the Navy or start a new life as a civilian? Chapter one fills in the gap in the movie starting where Charlie tries to tough-love Maverick into flying again and Maverick going to see Viper at his house. Chapters two and three follow the plot of the rest of the movie.

Mav whump my beloved!! He’s definitely going through it in this fic, but he’s got some external support and love that helps him through the roughest parts. A really good dive into what Mav’s headspace might have been looking like immediately after Goose’s death, with a solid icemav relationship that shows their steady beginnings.

Summary: Bradley shuffled inside their house, looking every bit as tired as Ice could tell he was. But he did not have the heart to tell the kid to head back home, when it was obvious that he wanted to talk to Pete and straighten things out. There was something there, something that made Tom think that this was the right time for those two to settle the score so to speak.

As it always goes, huge thanks to @thethistlegirl for all the help and hand holding throughout the process. Joining the fandom (or rather experiencing the whole Tom Cruise filmography step by step) is still a wild ride, and I am enjoying it.

This fic was inspired by many rewatches of Top Gun Maverick and me analyzing what wasn't said, because I had a feeling there was more to Mav pulling Bradley's papers, than just a promise to Carole. Brainstorming that ended up with a realization, so here we are, 8k words later with a finished story. I am very happy with how it turned out.

And of course, Ice lives!

Hopefully between giffing and daydreaming some other fics might pop up in the meantime. As for now, happy reading!

I'm Leaving On a Jet Plane FINAL CHAPTER

Here it is, the final chapter. I'd like to extend a thank you to every single one of you for following on this fever dream I wrote in the final days of my course. A particular thank you to @saengak (i really hope i'm tagging the right acc haha) for primary inspiration and such supportive comments. And @destinedtobeloved (again, i hope this is the right account!), your comments have been so sweet i'm truly grateful to them.

It will always, always hold a special place in my heart. Top Gun has, and this sounds ridiculous, but it has had a great effect on my life. I experience Top Gun winter when everyone else experienced Top Gun summer but it has helped me plan my summer to be full of simple things that bring me great joy and personal growth.

Thank you, I will see you in the next one (christmas fic? 🤫)

My 5 favorite fics that i’ve written (for fic writer appreciation day)

I was tagged by @ravens-words thanks EJ 💙 I know I'm late but I had to wait until I got one of them posted. All the links will go to my A03 account.

I'm cheating here and putting a series The Halsteads - One Chicago/Jay Halstead&OC: My 1st ever AU/og character story. And honestly it's one I'm most proud of so I put it first even tho I'm no longer in this fandom.. I never actually finished it but the last chapter of the last story ends on a good/hopeful note so it might as well be done.

Hold Onto Me - there was a lot of love and work go into this and I'm very proud of it. Carlos joins the Army instead of the Police Academy. TK becomes a baker instead of a firefighter. They happen to meet at a bakery in Austin; TK is a baker there, only been there a few months, when he meets Carlos who is home on a short leave. That chance meeting leads to a friendship that develops over texts and emails until Carlos is medically discharged from the Army.

Migraines - TopGun/Icemav fandom: Bradley (age 11) gets a migraine at school and has to call Pops (Ice) because Dad (Mav) is on training.

Another series but oh well It Started at ACC - 911 Lone Star/Tarlos fandom: Tarlos in college and different things that happen during that time.

Hi, big fan of your fics. I've just found your Tumblr and binged everything Icemav-related. When reading about Icemav's political beliefs, I've gotten curious. Does Bradley share the same political beliefs as Ice (and Mav)? Does being raised by them or them pulling his papers influence how he votes? Or there are other factors in the play (e.g. generations, social media)? How about Jake and the other Daggers? How does this young generation of the Navy perceive politics (elections, gender, etc.)? My apologies for bombarding you with questions. But as a non-American, American politics have always been something we must pay attention to. I've seen many interesting interpretations on Tumblr but it feels more or less wistful than realistic, but I might be wrong (again not an American) so I would love to see your perspective on this. Thank you.

ice’s NECESSARY conservatism as commander of the pacific fleet (i.e. officers who are most likely to get promoted to the highest ranks do NOT break the service line when it comes to domestic politics, so by necessity ice would’ve had to keep his mouth shut, he Cannot be both a four-star and a revolutionary, like he just can’t; and being a revolutionary is otherwise antithetical to his character anyway): here, here.

I’ve gone back and forth on everyones politics over the last year of me being involved with these characters, but let me just tell you where I’ve ended up headcanoning them politically, if ur interested

ice: reagan democrat. “educated moderate” who was more right-leaning pre-9/11. now just a regular ol liberal (did you SEE those gay little round glasses in tgm? no way this guy isn’t a straight-up lib) with absolutely no strong feelings about most domestic politics besides “fascism bad”. Has some foreign policy opinions that areeeee questionable at best, like all members of the military elite (hangman voice: DO NOT ASK ICEMAN ABOUT CHINA. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE). foreign policy neoliberal favoring the dovish side of the spectrum. A force conservator (“let’s save our military assets [read: my boyfriend maverick 🥺] for when we really need them, not for any old conflict. the deterring specter of the American war machine should outweigh the risk of underperforming”). He’s in favor of marriage equality of course, but treats it like a privilege and not a right. would be sad/upset if it got repealed but wouldn’t necessarily fight for it. “well at least my marriage will always be legal in california so i just won’t leave, problem solved.” Normie median Biden voter.

mav: political wildcard tbh. original 1986 mav is DEFINITELY right-leaning (i think i’ve written elsewhere, “he fully believes bill clinton is an affront to god”). i get young republican vibes from him. Full on patriotic (but dispassionate) 1980s reaganite anti-commie neoconservative. but after the 2010s i am very confused tbh. Tom cruise’s political aura is an insanely confusing one. idk. No matter what, Mav has some Hot Takes that a.) can immediately be shot down by ice using Facts and Logic at any time and b.) are not strictly partisan. He’s registered democrat just to support marriage equality (his marriage is his top priority but he doesn’t care about Other gays’ marriages, only his own), doesn’t care about any of the party’s other lines. Votes however ice tells him to. I get real “kind clueless libertarian” vibes from 2022 maverick tbh. Especially with the “isolating himself in a hangar in the middle of the mojave desert.” that has a political connotation to it for sure. bro just does whatever he wants out there

also, ice & mav live in San Diego, which… while in blue/democrat leaning California…is famously a bastion of right-wingers & has a hitler particle level off the charts… (sorry its not my favorite place in the world). That’s why they’re both continually so disgusted by San Francisco (a metonym for effete liberal homosexuality). Theyre from San Diego, hatred of SF & liberal SF politics is kinda par for the course down there.

Bradley: as u will see in the extras i definitely hc Bradley as an activist, but because he’s… in the navy and also like in his 30s… It’s not college campus activism, it’s just “things all of us in the left wing can agree upon” activism. so, like, BLM or pride, etc. He’s an “in this house we believe” yard sign liberal. He is 38 years old. hes a solid millennial so not politically hip with the kids (me)

Bradley & ice/mav disagree on the VISIBILITY of politics. Ice & mav, who did live through the vietnam era draft/near-dissolution of American society in the 60s and 70s, are not in favor of possibly losing their job/honor they have fought and killed for, for the sake of a political statement. And they believe their relationship IS a political statement, whereas Bradley would rather encourage them to treat their relationship like, I don’t know, a relationship that has a right to exist independent of politics!

Jake and the other daggers: idk. i don’t really give a shit about the daggers sorry. They r blank slates 2 me. jake especially is canonically frat-boy sexist in a way that gives me the heebs, much like original 1986 maverick and ice. But the navy tends to be the most left-wing (or thought of as left wing in common thought) service of the military, if that helps. But it is also the most traditional service of the military, and by traditional I mean BRITISH!!!! 🇬🇧💂there’s so much pomp and circumstance and hoity-toitiness that comes from the navy’s origins in the Royal Navy. A lot of sticking to outdated tradition in the very fabric of the navy itself, while the navy’s enlisted demographics shift younger and more left-wing/“revolutionary…” some interesting conflicts there. Like that one sailor who got blasted by multiple congressmen on social media for (with permission!) reading a poem about their queer identity on the USS Gerald ford’s intercom a few months back, if I remember correctly. Hoo boy the Takes that day were wild. Younger Americans tend to be more liberal but YMMV with officers, who are by nature trying to uphold outdated traditions of the navy for the sake of keeping the navy a unified service

friend of mine gave me the brainrot so. top gun ‘86 but they’re in a band!

goose and mav had the idea to start the band after a night at the o club- goose drags slider into it who drags ice into it (who wanted to join anyways but was too proud to admit it) ice and mav argue about who gets to be lead vocal but eventually ice relents, and it’s not just because of the smile on mav’s face… definitely not (icemav worms got to me)

anyways this is super self indulgent but very fun to draw so pls enjoy

WIP WEDNESDAY!

hello you cool people. this my first wip wednesday and i present a little icemav extract from my top gun formula 1 au. not sure when i’ll actually get the first chapter out because i’m incredibly busy, but i’m loving this au so far!

Kazansky.

It wasn’t as if Pete hadn’t known about him.

Ferrari’s current golden boy, the man who Red Bull had been trying to snatch for two years, now set to win his first world championship.

Thomas Kazansky.

Pete let the name roll around in his tongue.

Tom — nicknamed ‘Iceman’ by his fans, was a brawny, twenty six year old Russian-American. His frosted tips were often slicked back and perfect with not a single strand out of place, even managing to maintain the look when he took his helmet off. He had piercing blue eyes, and a resting expression that strongly resembled a Paddington hard-stare.

If you’d given Pete a few drinks, he would’ve happily told you that Tom Kazansky was probably the hottest man he’d seen in his entire life.

Staring at Tom was unlikely to be the best method of preparing for the race. Nevertheless, Pete was doing it anyway. He hoped he was at least being subtle, hiding his gaze behind the aviators perched on the bridge of his nose, angling his face so that unless you came ridiculously close to him, you would have assumed he was staring at the car, rather than the hot blonde talking to his engineer not fifteen metres from where Pete was leaning against the fencing.

Yeah, maybe this could be a problem.

His heart stuttered in his chest when Kazansky flicked his gaze over to him. Pete quickly coughed and looked down at the ground, pretending to adjust his fireproofs and praying to a God he didn’t believe in that the flush on his cheeks looked like sunburn. He looked back up slowly, only to find the Iceman still looking at him. His eyes flicked around Pete’s entire body, face shifting into a knowing expression.

Then Tom smiled, and Torro Rosso were gonna have to find another reserve driver because Pete Mitchell had been reduced to a puddle on the floor.

this fic isn’t gonna entirely focus around icemav, with pete’s friendship/teammate relationship with goose also being a centre point! (but what’s a top gun fic without a little tom x pete, eh?) thank you for reading!

haven’t written much this week because i was catching up on stranger things and steddie had me in a chokehold. i’m not a big fan of the series but it’s so refreshing to read new fics in a new fandom, i had missed that feeling (also love how the fandom collectively agreed to ignore the s04 finale, bc it was bullshit, and instead started their own fix-it fanfics, as it should be lol). anyway, here we go c:

He's zipping up his khakis when the phone rings. Maverick frowns. It's ass o’clock in the morning, and he definitely isn’t expecting anyone to call at this hour. He crosses the distance to the wall where the phone hangs and picks up.

“Mitchell speaking.”

“Uncle Mav!” it’s a whisper-shout, and it lights up every fiber in Maverick’s body.

“Hey, little guy! What are you doing up?”

“It’s your birthday, Uncle Mav! I wanted to be the first to wish you a happy birthday, of course!”

Maverick snorts. “Of course.”

“It’s today, right? Daddy said it was, and Ms Riley helped me mark it in my calendar. Ms Riley is my new teacher, by the way! She’s sub– subti– she’s teaching us while Mrs Sophie is on leave! Did you know she’s having a baby? She said it could be born any day now, that’s why she’s gonna stay home and rest! I was sad at first, because I really like art classes with Mrs Sophie, but I guess Ms Riley is cool too. She helped me make your present, did you know?”

Maverick’s grinning from ear to ear. He fucking loves the kid.
