Any good Chinese LGBT drama/ movie recommendations? And where to watch it?
Hmmm I thought I would have a lengthy list of recommendations but limited to just Chinese-language films/dramas, and ones that I would actually recommend, I realise that my list is a lot shorter 😅.
These are pretty much all going to be gay (mlm). Sorry for the lack of diversity 😔. Summaries are taken from Letterboxd for the most part.
Film Recs
(in chronological order)

There he meets Shitou and over the following years the two develop an act entitled “Farewell My Concubine” that brings them fame and fortune. When Shitou marries Juxian, Douzi becomes jealous, the beginnings of the acting duo’s explosive breakup and tragic fall take root.

Through flashbacks, we learn about Wan in her early days and Foon, who move in and out of each other's lives.
美少年之恋 || Bishonen (1998) - Hong Kong - dir. Yonfan
Personal rating: 3/5 ~ 3.5/5 (I flipflop on this lol)
Jet is a gay hustler who one night spots a young man walking with a woman, and falls for him instantly. He does some research, and discovers that the man is called Sam, and is an apparently straight policeman.
蓝宇 || Lan Yu (2001) - China (mainland) - dir. Stanley Kwan
Personal rating: 5/5 || [HQ Link EN subs] [HQ link, ZH subs] - Bear in mind these are both the cut version of the movie. There are about 4 scenes cut from this version, which is unfortunately the most easily found.
A love story between a country boy in Beijing to study and a wealthy businessman set against the backdrop of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.

As both men recount and recall their personal histories, they also contemplate a possible future together.
刻在你心底的名字 || Your Name Engraved Herein (2020) - Taiwan - dir. Liu Kuang-hui
Personal rating: 3.5/5
In 1987, as martial law ends in Taiwan, Jia-han and Birdy fall in love amid family pressure, homophobia and social stigma.

Saving Face (2004) - U.S.A
盛夏光年 || Eternal Summer (2006) - Taiwan
Drama Recs
Most of the LGBT dramas I've watched are trash or censored, sorry to say, and I tend to watch movies over dramas, so what's left for me to recommend is just from the HIStory (Linked: wiki with summaries) Taiwanese webdrama anthology:
HIStory1: My Hero (PR: 3/5)
HIStory1: Obsession (PR: 3/5)
History2: Crossing the Line (PR: 3.5/5)
History3: Trapped (PR: 3.5/5)

I don't know how to explain this but the versions of JTTW feels weird when the Tang Monk has the power to defend himself right, and whole reason he argues with Sun Wukong is he want to stay a pacifist and hes powerless when dealing with monsters on the journey
I kinda like the different interpretations!! Personally, I think that there are some versions that make it really exciting having Sanzang as a fighter or at least can defend himself as it changes the dynamics of the group a bit, just enough to make it where the audience can see the same character but with slightly altered roles!
I know that it goes against the OG narrative but I think it kinda leans more into that kinda area of 'what ifs' where the reason Sanzang has Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing isn't that he needs protection but rather he generally wants to help them on their redemption. I know that's never every take when it comes to a fighting Sazang trope but I think it adds another layer of having new dynamics without taking away Sanzang's core elements of wanting to help others and being compassionate. I don't think having a character that can defend himself takes away his values of valuing life. If done well I think that it can be interesting to see someone that doesn't like violence still have the view that they understand certain circumstances cannot be avoided. Like Sanzang doesn't want Wukong to kill but he also never tells them to fight either, just to show mercy on their enemies and never go overboard, especially when they are far weaker them the overpowered yaoguai.
Of course, they aren't accurate but that is the fun of re-marks like that, and I think if done well can still have Sanzang's core traits of seeing good in everyone while having a more playful twist of dynamics in a media.
.....I'm mostly talking about Westward 西行纪 BUT I JUST LOVE THE CRAZINESS OF IT ALL! I'm not here for power structures, I'm here for character-driven narratives.

This Sanzang BENCH PRESSES demons, everyone else is just there for show. HE ALREADY GOT WARPED AROUND HIS FISTS HE READY.
What I'm trying to say it, I think if done right, it could be a really fun concept to play with but understandable if they just make him just a fighter and not a monk. A good "What if he was a Warrior Monk" but don't just make him a fighter.

Aro book review: So Many Beginnings by Bethany C. Morrow
This a retelling of Little Women, and is about a Black family living in a colony for the recently emancipated during the American Civil War. It follows the four sisters and their mother.
The book does a really good job of adapting the setting and teaching some history I was unaware of. I did struggle a little with the writing style at first - it's a bit tell, not show and seems to only briefly go over what's happening at times. It is on the shorter side and I wonder if it would have benefited from being a bit longer to flesh parts of it out better.
It seems pretty clear that this version of Jo is aroace in some way - all versions of Jo I've seen have had strong aroace vibes but often this is neglected at the end when she gets married - but here she gets to stay in that aroace space.

Do you think CLTCL Penguin (or Killer) likes those little devilish Penguins from the Madagascar franchise?
If either of them do, who's their favorite brother?
Oh, they both love them. Penguin loves them all, he doesn't do favorites. Killer too, but every time they do something devilish, Killer is like "You do this too", and "This is why I can't trust you."
Penguin's most quoted movie line from all movies that exist, is "Just smile and wave, boys."
Killer likes to pinch Penguin's cheeks every now and then and say, "I want you to look cute and cuddly." (Penguin hates that)

Something that's been bothering me lately is the amount of vitriolic posts that I see directed at fans of something that the OP and the people who reblog the post dislike. It's perfectly fine to say, "I didn't enjoy the Barbie movie," or "I don't think that OFMD lives up to the hype." But many folks seem to be misplacing their aversion to the show and pushing it onto the fans.
I'll see posts deriding people for enjoying Margot Robbie's performance in an hour-long commercial for a doll and mocking them for thinking that she deserves an Oscar nomination for it. But they could have easily said something like, "Personally, I didn't think that Robbie's performance was all that great, and the premise of the Barbie movie rubs me the wrong way." Why did they have to make it an attack against people they don't even know? They're making generalizations about why a person would enjoy the movie and offending people en masse by turning an opinion into an insult.
I don't go searching for these mean-spirited posts, but they find their way onto my dash regardless. (The amount of OFMD posts that get mixed into the Death Note tag makes me alternately laugh and cry.) And I wish that there were some way to block posts based on a specific tone, but there's no shared tagging system amongst them, and I don't want to avoid an entire show just because a few people are being rude about it. I want to be in a little Internet bubble full of people who are kind and respectful about the shows they don't like. There's so much to be anxious and indignant about already in the world. Why do some people want to waste their energy going after fans of TV shows and popular movies?

“i have a theory that elves are actually super duper itty bitty and blue pathfinders turn them human size but like that’s why they can travel at the speed of light and why humans can’t find them” -my sister
Comes home to my hardworking elf family and puts a single blueberry on the table for dinner and it collapses under the weight because the blueberry is bigger than all of us combined (I carried it with my super tiny elf mind) and we'll feast for weeks
That aside, what is "super duper itty bitty" in numeric values? Are we talking small like, kitten sized? Like rat sized? Like snail sized? Like ant? Like tardigrade? (the irony of me requesting numeric values and then listing nothing numerical is not lost on me).
Because currently I'm imagining them like a colony of ants that you can just step on. Their entire existence relies on something not stepping on them.
I will say, this does actually account for a few otherwise inexplicable occurrences--aside from the traveling at the speed of light and undiscovered by humans. For example, the over abundance I mentioned in an earlier post. Living mostly off fruit and such, anything normal sized will feed several people. That's why they're not at risk of starving. And the reason they can be so lavish with crystals is because proportionally, they need very little crystal to decorate themselves the way humans do. An entire house would be several fortunes over for a human, but there's enough resources to build a small elf house without draining the planet in the same way. It also explains why their economic system sucks so bad; their brains are too small to realize their own stupidity.
There are more kinks to be worked out (how does the blue crystal make them big, for example), but I think your sister is onto something. Not quite sure what, but her mind intrigues me.

willowenigma submitted:
For AMM: The Wall (1982)
The movie is a musical using the music from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album. It focuses on a fictional rockstar named Pink, who's in the middle of an emotional and mental breakdown and is remembering/hallucinating the traumatic events of his life that brought him to that point.
Romantic relationships do play a key role in the movie, but they're generally not depicted positively and it's very possible to watch through the lens of Pink being aro.
Other warnings include graphic sexual content, depictions of WWII and Nazi imagery, blood and death, drug use and overdoses, misogyny, and violence.
(Sorry if this has been submitted before, I had a hard time checking the rec lists on mobile!)
