Ethan Winters Doesn't Get Enough Love and that's Heartbreaking
Tumblr media
So I'm gonna preface this by saying yes: there will be spoilers to the ending of Resident Evil 7 and Village. If you don't want that scroll away now. Leave, shoo, outta here, go on git, *angrily shakes broom and smacks it against the door to make a loud, aggressive sound*
——————————————————————————
Okay so I get Ethan was the "villain" of Resident Evil Village because he killed everyone's favorite vampire mommy but this is in fact a Resident Evil game. Alcina and her daughters and the rest of the four lords were always going to die. It's the nature of the game. It didn't help that Capcom flipped the script and leaned VERY heavily into the villains of Village when it came to the marketing. (Hell I'll bet Capcom is literally kicking itself for making Lady D the first chapter boss) but they really went heavy on making Ethan kind of take a backseat to Lady Dimetrescu and Heisenberg for this game. Which I think is really kind of shitty because we get to see Ethan at his best in this game both in terms of characterization and development.
I need to give a shout-out to Todd Solely, Ethan's mocap and voice actor. We don't get to see Ethan's face in the game so we have to go off of every little action Ethan does and every bit of dialogue we get from Ethan we pay a closer bit of attention to. It's like when you lose one of your senses every other sense tries to make up for its loss. Some truly stand out moments of this were.
1. When Ethan is rejecting Heisenberg's offer of using Rosemary as a weapon and Ethan just spits back at Heisenberg "Rose is not a weapon, fuck you." Ethan freaking lowers his head and leans into the fuck you. You can just tell Ethan is not having ANY of this at all and while I know a lot of people wanted an option where we could have sided with Heisenberg, I'm glad we didn't. Forcing us to pick between Mia and Zoe in RE7 was already a nightmare. Like would the option have been nice yes, but the canon of Resident Evil is being held together by duct tape and spit at this point. That would have torn down the whole house of cards that is the continuity of this franchise.
2. When Ethan is in the village and after he watches the floor cave under Elena and he watches her burn to death. Ethan starts audibly crying, "why does everyone around me keep on dying?" And when he leaves out the window he slams his fist against the pane and yells out why this is happening to him again. You partially wanna go 'come on Ethan, you're in a Resident Evil game, get with the times.' but you realize Ethan thought he was free, he thought if he and Mia cooperated with the BSAA and did what Chris told him to everything would be okay. Yet here he is, back again in Resident Evil hell and he's had three years of him trying to rebuild his life after an EXTREMELY traumatic event just thrown out the window.
3. When The Duke points out that the jar Ethan has is in fact Rose's head and we see him drop the jar like it was a bomb. We saw Ethan's brain literally break. That's his daughter, the one thing he loves more than anything in this world, in this tiny jar. His whole world has shattered. And then when The Duke tries to make light of the situation the abject fucking hatred and pure venom in Ethan's voice. Especially the line "You'll pay if I find out this is a lie." With the delivery of an almost animalistic, hatred-filled growl. It sent a shiver down my spine. It felt like Ethan was willing to freaking maul The Duke with his bare hand (and what's left of the other one)
4. It's not as serious as the last three, but it's actually rather heartwarming. The whole opening portion of the game where Ethan is walking around the house with Rosemary commenting on things throughout the house. There's so much tenderness in this opening. This is a bit of a contrast to the very terrified but almost cynical towards the end delivery we got for Ethan with RE7. We're now seeing a much more tender and loving side to Ethan. Especially when Ethan is pretending to be one of Rosemary's stuffed monkeys. It's silly and cartoonish but it really shows the depth of Ethan and just how much he loves his daughter.
5. Ethan's become such a little shit by the time Village rolls around. He may be yet another human* trapped in a Romanian hellscape with mutated nightmares, but by god is Ethan willing to verbally beat you down if you step in his way. "Looks like your outside matches your inside now, psycho witch." he shouts at Lady D. in her Dragon form." Or when he talks down to Moreau after killing him. "In death as he was in life. Disgusting." And the delivery of that disgusting too was just *chef's kiss*
6. When Ethan is killed by Miranda and is in the Purgatory state with Eveline. Even though the effects make it seem really hard to make out what Ethan is trying to say, I also think it genuinely is because Ethan is freezing, his body has gone cold, his body has given up on him at this point and Eveline reveals the truth. Ethan has always been dead. Ethan is shocked at this realization. His whole life for these past three years have been a lie. But to see Ethan drag himself up again solely for the sake of saving his daughter? UGH. SO GOOD.
7. The entire ending cutscene where Chris is helping carry Ethan and Rosemary out of the Altar and back to the Helicopter. It's honestly so heartbreaking. Once we saw Ethan's good hand start to disintegrate, we knew. Ethan's time was up. Ethan's body had taken on too much damage and the Mold couldn't keep him alive much longer. His final words while alive in this phase still make me choke up every time. "Mia..? I'm so sorry... I love you... Keep Rose safe. Watch over her.. Teach her to be strong.. Goodbye Rosemary." In Ethan's last conscious moments the only thing that mattered to him were his wife and his daughter. I.. i need a moment..
Ethan Winters was different than any other Resident Evil protagonist. He wasn't some ex-air force pilot turned sharpshooter, super-cop who punches boulders. He wasn't an ex-army master of unlocking turned international savior and founder of a paramilitary group created to stop bioweapons. He wasn't a rookie cop turned direct operative for this universe's version of the Secret Service who saves the president's daughter. Ethan is just a regular systems engineer from California who loves his wife so much he was willing to drop everything for a chance to save her. Ethan's just a civilian forced to survive the world of Resident Evil. Hell, Ethan didn't survive, Ethan Winters was killed by Jack Baker after Jack stomped on Ethan's head. What we know as and see as Ethan is really a collection of mold that re-animated Ethan and took over his body and personality. It's downright horrific when you think about it.
Tumblr media
Ethan being a dead man walking is something that I've thought about a lot since finishing Village for the first time. To know that Ethan isn't Ethan, but instead is just a collection of mold cells that used his body and has dog-eared his consciousness and personality is insane to me. Not only was Ethan able to resist Eveline, the source of the mold that created the thing that became Ethan, but he was able to resist The Black God (the Megamycete) completely. The mold collective that was Ethan Winters was able to fully retain Ethan's shape, form, appearance, consciousness and be completely unaffected by most external factors. Even in Resident Evil biological terms, what Ethan Winters was, was nothing short of a miracle. When Ethan "dies" in the game during a game over screen we don't see him mutate into your usual flavors of Resident Evil biological nonsense. We never saw Ethan disintegrate after dying (if he did it was done off screen but bleh) Ethan was a full-fledged human while absolutely not being one.
The complications and plot holes that this opens are very numerous. Why exactly was Ethan able to maintain so much of himself despite purely being a mold being? How was Ethan able to resist even Mother Miranda even while being directly connected to the Megamycete? The source of ALL of the mold infection? How was Ethan able to sexually reproduce and make a (mostly) normal human? How did Mia not get re-infected with the mold by having sex with Ethan? Why didn't Ethan mutate as opposed to say Jack despite having similar regenerative abilities? If the BSAA was able to physically remove mold spores from both Ethan AND Mia, how did they not realize that Ethan was even more infected than Mia?
Don't get me started on Mia, she's getting her own rant soon enough but Mia while being just as much a victim of this situation as Ethan, Mia Winters is easily one of the worst characters as a person in Resident Evil. She lied to Ethan about her occupation as a researcher for The Connections, she physically assaults Ethan on multiple occasions (she was infected by Mold and under Eveline's influence I'll give her a pass here.) But most importantly Mia is fully aware that Ethan is still infected with the mold. This is compounded by the fact that originally in RE7 we were told that Mia was just Eveline's handler. When in reality at the Exposition Bombing at the end of Village we see a photograph (see below) showing that Mia and Miranda weren't strangers. They knew each other enough to take a picture with each other. Mia wasn't just a handler, she was a full-blown researcher and scientist with The Connections and she was fully aware of the extent of Ethan's infection. Yet she willingly allowed herself to be impregnated by a molded Ethan. She sits on the secret for a long time, she almost even tells Ethan the truth in an argument a week prior to the events of Village. Yet she doesn't. I want to give a lore-related theory/explanation to this. I can't remember exactly which game it was but Wesker had entered into a file that he hypothesized that the human psyche plays an impact on mutations on highly mutagenic strains of viruses. I.e. think about how Alexia became this bulbous, insect queen in her second form because she saw herself as royalty, genetically superior and above all else. Mia had no idea what would have happened if she told Ethan the truth, she didn't know what would have happened to Ethan whether he would have just had a full-on mental breakdown or if he would have mutated because his psyche would have become so fractured. Let alone what would have happened to her family. Because while Mia may have been duplicitous and lied to Ethan both in RE7 and Village: Mia genuinely loved Ethan. I don't think there's any way we can debate that.
Tumblr media
(The person on the far right of the image is Mia. The woman to the left of the little girl is Miranda. The little girl is Eveline. Mia and Miranda weren't strangers. Which begs the question: why did Miranda keep Mia alive in her lab?)
Ethan Winters is a character who has left a huge impact in only two games. While he's your generic everyman protagonist with a little bit of biting sarcasm in RE7. By the time Village rolls around Ethan is a fully-fleshed character. We get our actions survivor back but this time with basic military training, even more sarcasm, and now with the full range of emotions. We get to see Ethan as a tender and loving father towards his daughter, from criticizing Mia (Miranda) for reading a scary pop-up book with Rose to him swaddling his daughter as she starts stirring and crying. To holding onto Rose tightly but ever-so tenderly as Ethan is physically falling apart and carbonizing. We watch Ethan cry as the people he tries to help die around him, we see Ethan filled with abject and carnal rage towards his adversaries. Ethan truly is Resident Evil's titleholder for best dad. (Sorry Barry lol) and for a character with no face that we can see during the main game, Ethan is exceptionally expressive and emotional and shockingly so human for this franchise.
I'm beyond excited for what Shadow of Rose: the DLC for village will bring. My theory is that since Rosemary has gained access to a remaining sample of the Megamycete, we probably will see Ethan again in some way/shape/form since the Megamycete absorbs the consciousness of all who die within the reach of its roots. Whether or not Ethan is corrupted or he finally reunites with the daughter he loved so much is yet to be seen. But I would love to see a tender moment where Ethan pulls Rose into the tightest of hugs. He remarks how he's been inside of her watching her through her connection to the mold. Ethan would be profusely apologetic about not being there for her, but that he's so incredibly proud of the strong young woman she's become.
Ethan Winters deserves more love and recognition and it's a crime he doesn't get his pearls. I love this daddliest catch of a man who literally goes through HELL just to save his daughter. It broke my heart when Ethan died, just like it did when I saw Piers die from Resident Evil 6. But we got a fantastic character out of all of these two games. So go on Mr. Winters, smile. I hope whatever afterlife you are on you're loved and valued.

Ah! Love your AU! I can’t wait to see Abel’s role in your story! Cain claiming the crown? Love it! Technically, he can have a say for the crown because he is still Lucifer’s bloodline. But imagine Lilith though… then again we have no clue what her personality is so creating a scenario with her in it will be hard. How would Lilith fit into this?
Able's role will be interesting. I haven't seen him depicted this before but I'm not an Able aficionado so my idea could be an overused trope. I have no clue.
I'm working off of some Helluva Boss information (possibly OLD) regarding bloodlines and how inheritance works. I imagine that because Cain is half human he's the last option, if even an option at all. He could DEMAND compensation from Lucifer but considering how they feel about one another I highly doubt Cain would ask for a rock.
Lilith has just enough spicy cannon information to make her a villain or misunderstood saint. Either way, she wouldn't allow Cain on the throne through inheritance. She'd probably rather birth 10 more children then let the bastard son of the woman who 'replaced her' claim the crown through bloodline. I imagine that she'd work towards keeping herself in power over supporting her daughter and husband. Even in the intro for Hazbin Hotel it shows she mainly works to satisfy herself over her fellows.

Alastor is NOT a good person
Tumblr media
I am going to say this ONCE: I do NOT hate Alastor, I am simply making a reminder post for a certain section within the Hazbin Hotel fandom who either downplay or ignore the demon's flaws and cruelty.
Look, I am NOT making this post to get people to not like Alastor. I get it - he's an entertaining character and one of the reasons the show is well known. If you like him, that's okay. But don't use your liking of him to mischaracterize him into some misunderstood saint. He's not.
Alastor is NOT helping Charlie out of the goodness of his heart but, as clearly stated by him, he WANTS to be there to see the Hotel FAIL. He even redid Charlie's song from the Pilot to openly mock her and her goals, which the Princess didn't notice given how she was distracted by the Overlord's song and dance.
He is a MASTER MANIPULATOR. Yeah, he doesn't technically lie but he's an emotionally manipulating sociopath. He did this to get Husk into eternal servitude and again with Charlie to make a deal with him during her most emotionally vulnerable moment.
Tying into the last part from the above point - if Alastor was a good person and ally/friend for Charlie, he would've told Charlie and the gang the vital info WITHOUT making a deal. He didn't.
His personal lyrics in "Ready For This" and sinister facial expressions, heavily imply him "guiding" Charlie is another word for "manipulate". It's unclear as to WHAT, but it can't be good.
"He sees Charlie as a daughter" - No, I don't think he does. His entire reasons for playing up the paternal role was to irritate Lucifer and further manipulate Charlie by saying the things he KNEW she would want to her given her obvious daddy issues.
I've seen many people (I presume Charlastor shippers), say he's a better fit for Charlie than Vaggie. And I'm like, "What?" Aside from the fact that he's canonically AroAce and Chaggie are an official and happily committed romance, but how about all the reasons I just listed - In short, Charlie is a kind, selfless, pure hero while Alastor is a selfish, arrogant, violent "anti-hero/villain"; Vaggie is no saint but she's honest, loyal, and definitely more heroic than him. Plus, unlike how Alastor is prideful over his kills, Vaggis is nothing but ashamed and regretful, and it's lightly implied she never enjoyed any of the killings of Sinners during her time as an Exorcist. I mean, ship who you want at the end but don't character assassinate Vaggie to artificially prop up Alastor. Again, ship and like who you want but be real and don't make up stuff.
As shown in "Dad Beat Dad", Alastor is NOT a good boss to Husk. He threatened to murder the cat demon just for stating a fact that Alastor hated. I can't say what Vivziepop was thinking, but I think she possibly put that scene to not only reveal Alastor's soul is owned by someone else but also to remind the audience that Alastor isn't this "sweet, old timey" guy - He's a violent, egotistical asshole who ENJOYS killing and seeing people in pain.
While he does admit to having grown close to the Hotel crew, his lyrics in the ending song shows he was more scared of dying for his friends; in short, he was disgusted at the idea and pushing whatever feelings of camaraderie away so he can keep his pride.

Tell me more about that anti hero squad
Tumblr media
I'm so glad you asked
So they're part of a comic I'm working on where the basic premise is a group of villains are introduced to a rehabilitation program to help them process their traumas and get the help they need, both to help them on their path to redemption and to boost up the number of heroes in the world because there's very few now. I'm still working on the details and worldbuilding, but that's the basic premise. It's a character study about heavily traumatized people finding community and love within each other, building a found family and helping to save a world they once saw as hopeless and shitty. It also takes place over the course of several years, I'm thinking 5, so their ages listed are what they start as.
The starting main characters are;
Raze (Kaito Shimoda):
Tumblr media
Raze is 21, Japanese, and is the leader of the group, mainly because he recognises everyone's strengths and weaknesses and gets them to work together as a team. He was the son of a yakuza gang member who had the "brilliant" idea of trying to overthrow the boss so he could get power for himself. Only his plan was discovered and both he and his family were made an example of. Raze only survived because earlier that evening he had a massive fight with his parents over the fact that they didn't like the crowd he was hanging out with or that his test scores were extremely poor, so he snuck out and didn't come back until early the next morning. When he saw police cars and ambulances outside their house. And then he saw what the yakuza had done to his little kid sister Haruhi, who he'd shoved aside when she tried to comfort him after the fight and told her to get lost.
It's her little phone charms that he keeps tied around the handle of his sword so he can never forget her or the state the yakuza left her in, because he wants to do worse to them. He was 15 at the time of the murders and spent the next few years honing his skills as a martial artist and swordsman (both skills he was already developing beforehand he just didn't take them as seriously at the time) so he could hunt down each and every last member who hurt his family.
He's primarily motivated by shame, guilt and self loathing, he wants to make up for the fact that he wasn't there to protect his family, that his last words to them were "I hate you" and that he'd told his little sister that he didn't care about her, for her to get lost and stop bothering him. His character arc revolves around learning to let go of the guilt and to allow himself to heal and move on. He's been punishing himself for years by isolating himself and wallowing in self pity and thats not healthy.
Mama Croc (Bella Roth):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm still working on her design.
She's the black 37 year old former wrestling champion from New Orleans, who fell dangerously ill to a strange disease no one could identify or find a cure for. She spent all her money on doctors and when she became too sick to fight anymore, her company dropped her. So she was forced to seek experimental treatment which led to her horrific mutations as the crocodile woman.
She's the rock keeping everyone else together, able to keep a cool, calm head even in the midst of chaos. She's used to being regarded as a dumb bulk of muscle, but she's actually got a razor sharp wit. After she had to give up her own daughter to foster care when she became too sick to properly take care of her, she develops a mother/daughter bond with Plague Witch and shows her compassion, empathy and love. She and Raze also used to work together from time to time and he was the first criminal who didn't treat her like dumb muscle so she's fond of him too and she uses pet names for everyone. If she calls you doll, babe or gorgeous, you know you're in her good graces. Her character arc focuses on her learning to love herself again and reuniting with her long lost daughter, and even finding true love in the one place she never expected it.
Mainly the one superhero who never gave up on her and who always believed she was incredible and deserved better than to just be some cowardly villain's bodyguard.
The Fool (Frank Grey)
Tumblr media
The Fool is of Romani/Irish heritage but was born in America and he's 19. His family owned their own circus but when they refused to pay protection money to a mob boss, their circus was burned to the ground and The Fool was the only survivor of the massacre. He was thrown into foster care and bounced around between families where he suffered terrible abuse. I won't go into detail here but it was bad and left him with a distorted view on love and relationships, to the point where when he ended up in an incredibly abusive relationship with a girl who exploited his trauma to keep him in line, who physically and mentally abused him and made him dependant on her, even if it meant sticking with the clown gimmick he hated because of the memories it dragged up (and she insisted they keep it because it was "cute".) His character arc focuses on him breaking the bonds of abuse, learning what genuine love, compassion and empathy is like and with the support of his friends he's finally able to break up with his toxic girlfriend and start on the path to recovery. He even ditches the clown gimmicks over time but keeps the Fool because his girlfriend used it as a dig to mock him but he's reclaimed it and made a mockery of her instead. He primarily uses explosives and a hammer when he fights.
He and Raze have similar backstories but whereas Raze was more seeking to atone for not being there to save his family, the Fool is angry and wants to make the mob boss bleed for what he did. They're both revenge stories but different sides to it, if that makes sense, and because of their shared trauma they grow closer and help each other cope with the nightmares and the triggers, and over time they fall in love but its a slow, slow burn. Because the Fool has trauma from men and they have to love each other as friends first before they can fall in love with each other.
Plague Witch (Eva Kirkland):
Tumblr media
Plague Witch is the 16 year old Native American with an alien parasite living inside her that attached itself to her when she was only a little girl. After her shape-shifting powers were discovered she was abducted from her home and experimented on for years to the point she suffers with amnesia and can't remember a time where she wasn't stuck in a cell and tortured every day.
She's the most powerful member of the group with her shape-shifting powers allowing her to morph her arms into swords or massive, deadly claws. The biggest drawback though is that she's still only 16 and her powers require concentration to manifest, and when she loses that concentration the form breaks down, or when she becomes moody or loses control of her temper, her form fluctuates and loses its efficiency. So that's why she's kept with Mama Croc, who teaches her patience and how to keep a cool head even in tense situations. She also develops a brother/sister bond with Raze because she reminds him of his sister Haruhi.
Her character arc is about her finding a family again and developing from a social outcast with severe anger issues and anxiety, to a level headed and outgoing young lady who winds up becoming the next leader after Raze decides to pass the mantle onto her.
This was very long I'm very sorry but I'm so glad you asked because I love talking about these guys :)

Peace Of Mind (Diavolo.(JJBA))
Tumblr media
Sy:  Diavolo sits down to relax with you by his side. Just some soft fluff with our favorite boss.
Word Count: 368 words (a short lil fic)
A/n: I really love JJBA, and I love Diavolo. Actually my favorite two people in the anime/series are Diavolo and Dio. What can I say, I love me some villains. (oh and kars too, i'm a huge kars simp too..)
Heres my kofi if you wanna support me!
»»————- ★ ————-««
Your Mother had warned you about men like them, that they didn’t mean anything. That they wouldn’t do you any good. They would use and abuse you, they would never love you.
But oh how your momma was wrong.
“Tesoro..what are you thinking about?”
A hand ran through your hair, soft and kind like before coming down to caress your cheek. You leaned into the hand and looked up to see the pink/fuscha hair you’d come to love.
“Nothing, Dia..just relaxing right now, I had a long night last night..” You answered, hearing as he came to sit next to you.
Diavolo.
The name would strike fear and terror into anyone who heard the name for miles, but you, it drew you in closer. Diavolo was a mafia boss, a strong one at that. He had control of much of the area you resided in and that’s how you knew him.
You had captured his and his right hand mans, Doppio, attention. You were a gentle soul, someone who wanted to keep to themselves and lived a quiet life, something that Diavolo craved. He craved that quietness that you had, to be quite honest, he was very jealous of it.
So here Diavolo was in your quiet little home on the outskirts of Italy, spending every minute that he was not busy with you. Soaking up time. He would even bring Trish sometimes and actually loved the idea of the three of you being a nice little family, but he would have to wait a bit before bringing his daughter around.
For now, he enjoyed being with you by himself.
He moved to lay his head in your lap, allowing himself to feel vulnerable with you, letting his guard completely. He nearly let out a purr as he felt your hand run through his hair.
A soft grin came on to his face as he listened to you, you were just rambling on at this point, the sunset glow bouncing beautifully off of your skin.
“I love you Tesoro..”
“I love you too, Dia..”
Finally he had a little peace of mind, and that he could finally relax for once in his life.
For now…

A Thought That Came To Me
You know, I think I came up with two concepts for myself when it comes to character portrayal. The Pink Diamond Effect and the Stolas Geotia Effect. And I'll be more than happy to explain more into that. (Warning, though, if I rant here and there. Kinda of spontaneous as I write down opinions and all that) (Another warning, Stolas lovers should stay out of this one)
So I felt like watching Helluva Boss videos on youtube. I would come across Steven Universe ones, too. And I noticed something kinda peculiar about Steven's mom, especially when I compared her to Stolas. Both the gem woman and the demon owl man are exact opposites in character protrayal.
Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond was initially this big force of goodness, who couldn't do anything wrong and was thoroughly, absolutely perfect. The most to mistakes we would hear about is from Greg and, even then, it made Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond more, well, human. (And now that I think about it, did Greg ever find out that he had a child with a diamond? Like, before Steven was born or was it at the same time as everyone else?)
But then the series would go on to reveal how awful Steven's mother was, over and over again. Like I heard from Sarcastic Chorus, was there anyone Pink didn't traumatize when she met them? And really, the main series was already enough to pound in how demonized Pink Diamond is. I'm not sure if much people can keep in mind the good that she did do before being, well, gone for good.
Yeah, Pink Diamond foolishly thought that her family would be discouraged by her death and then be happy that she's gone, had left behind Spinel, and we're not touching all the shit between her and Pearl. But she was the only one to see value in organic life and fought to defend Earth. And the thing is, Earth was her first planet so she likely never saw any planets up close that would still have life on it. So I would like to believe that she's the kind of person who would instantly love whatever her planet is as it is and would fight to defend it. She did it in a way that wasn't rocking the boat too much, up until she did it in a way that ended up overturning the boat. But she at least never realized that and, compared to the other diamonds who just get a weirdly-constructed turn from evil to good, Pink Diamond had a more natural turn from evil to good.
Then there's Stolas. At the start of the series, Stolas was just a closeted gay who discovered a new source of elation and wanted it. Badly. He wanted it so badly that he chose when Blitz was currently being shot at so that Stolas could talk to him. So that Blitz couldn't exactly say 'no' the arrangement presented. Then Stolas gets the bright idea to distract his daughter from the troubles at home by inviting the most painfully physical reminder of the troubles at home as bodyguards and spend a good chunk of the day graphically flirting with Blitz right where Octavia can see and hear it. Even after they made up, Stolas kept focused on sleeping with Blitz (Just because Stolas promised to never leave Octavia for Blitz doesn't mean it can't leave a bad taste in one's mouth if Stolas continues to screw around with Blitz even after his daughter exploding with built-up frustration at Loo Loo Land). And Stolas kept up the baby talk and demeaning names to Blitz until the second to last episode decided that he loves loves the imp for some reason.
Season 2 starts and the show pretends so damn hard that Stolas was never an asshole who just wanted imp dick. Now Stolas is all of a sudden a sensitive, lonely woobie boy who was forced to marry a horrible, abusive girl against his will and has always loved Blitz since first seeing him. And now, whenever anyone tries holding him accountable for anything anymore, it's either by Stella or Striker - antagonists and/or villains who are meant to not be in the right anyways - or by Octavia or Blitz, who are made out to be tragic cases that will resolve itself in an episode's time anyways. In Blitz's case, he'll likely ignore the problem just like how Stolas does, even if it's the opposite way from how Stolas likes to ignore problems. (Although the show itself seems to be doing that. And ironically enough, I would have just been fine with the show if Blitz and Stolas just remained what they were before: mutual assholes to each other, especially if the series was supposed to be episodic)
Long story short, Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond started as an undeniably good person who was beloved by all but then got demonized more and more and more as the show went on. (And seriously, the movie and the sequel series didn't relent on that, either. At fucking ALL). But with Stolas, he started out as an asshole only for the show to eventually start pretending that he never was. And I'm certain the show will keep pounding it in that idea of Stolas being a poor woobie as it goes on
So I'm calling the whole thing, respectively, the Pink Diamond Effect and the Stolas Geotia effect but if anyone has any other ideas, go ahead and tell me. It'll be fun seeing your ideas on what to call it

DC universe story arc idea (may have been done, but I'm not aware of this particular setup)
Batman is still goth Sherlock Stark. He is reviled by society, with the police actively hunting him or feeding him false tips to lure him into mob ambushes. In-universe Superman reacts to big, flashy crises when they arise, and he's loved for his quick response times. By contrast, Batman roots out the causes of crime, seeking to scrape out the cancer and sluice out the corruption, until every last dreg, every ounce of bribery and lies, is laid bare to the public... A rogue's gallery of inmates from Arkham asylum keep getting let out to keep Batman busy, off the mob, and off the state officers who want him gone.
Arkham is a city-funded asylum, and there's local ordinances and state laws that prohibit the asylum from receiving funding from charities or charitable persons, barring Bruce Wayne from having an impact on the asylum on that front. He's actively sponsoring various legislators who aim to tear down those restrictions, but they've all got other priorities too, and the opposition is still stronger.
The Night Wing is an organization of Robinsonas and Batsonas who are largely orphans and the homeless. Some of them wear costumes. Most of them don't. Informants, smugglers, and a few combat-trained veterans make up the bulk of their organization, but there's a few others with specialized skills. One Batgirl is a hacker who calls herself Oracle. Her dad was on track for commissioner of the Gotham police before he walked into an ambush during a drug bust. Gordon never got to see his daughter grow up. Barbara lost her mom to racketeers a few years after. At 16, she was living on couches, bouncing around, trying to finish school. Her computer lab teacher caught on and decided to teach her the ins and outs of coding, hacking, troubleshooting, etc. So she could support herself by getting a job fixing broken code for health insurance companies, or something.
Instead, she became a tech vigilante, and uses her know-how to jailbreak tech, hack software, and erase her own footprint with a forged footprint that leads investigators somewhere else.
Joker has it out for Batman, knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne, but won't tell a soul because that would spoil the fun.
Harvey Dent knows who Bruce Wayne became, because he saw what losing Thomas and Martha did to the child, saw what Bruce became when his parents' killer was finally found, and saw how when Bruce returned from abroad, the Batman started to show up. NOBODY else knows it's Bruce in the Bat Suit until Bane shows up and rips the bat mask off.
In this version, Bane isn't a Luchador, or quite Tom Hardy's version. Rather, he's a former wrestling federation Heel who got into the drug trade, and eventually became a cartel boss. He's not a member of the League of Assassins, but Talia al Ghul is his primary problem-solver, and she is one of the few surviving members of the League.
Riddler:
Poison Ivy is a chemist who concocts several toxic plant compounds into serums and cosmetics that she uses to keep herself inoculated to their effects. She's at a high enough dose she'll eventually develop hepatic and renal failure, but in the interim, she's so deadly that any kind of bodily fluid exchange with someone else is likely to kill them.
Sometimes that's a kiss. Sometimes she spits in someone's eye. Sometimes, well... you get the idea. Skin-to-skin contact can cause anything from mild euphoria, discomfort, pain, etc. But direct fluid exchange is almost guaranteed fatal. Harleen Quinzel has a natural immunity to nearly every poison Pamela Isley uses, as do Selena Kyle and Richard Grayson.
Selena Kyle is a bast-worshipping vigilante who survived a near-fatal fall when she found evidence of corporate malfeasance. Together with Dr. Pamela Isley and Dr. Harleen Quinzel, the three of them are probably the most villainous of the vigilantes, but they only go after demonstrably evil people. Abusers, torturers, people who litter...
Joker is usually the most deadly of rogues' gallery villains, as he kills to seal the punchline of his jokes. But the most murderous and evil villains are government employees. Officers in Gotham police, judges, attorneys. Not all. Not even most. But the few who are evil shield themselves under the cloak and pretext of righteousness by rule of law.
The stories revolve around Bruce Wayne growing from a boy who lost his parents to a rich man bent on saving the world, to recognizing just how small a part he plays in real world solutions to the ongoing problems.
The series would run for approximately 4 books or 4 season's worth of material, where Bruce would grow less and less the focus of the story, and by the end of season 3, full blown revolution is underway with certain members of society's elite pitching their support for the common folk, or digging in their heels about it. One poignant scene in Season 2 has Bruce getting it in his head that he should fire Alfred, dissolve Wayne Enterprises, and give up his vast sums of fortune to the poor, and while Alfred affirms that giving money to help the poor would be a good start, he doesn't think dissolving Wayne Enterprises would be a good idea. When Bruce inquires about Alfred's opinion on leaving the business, he just shrugs and says he loved Thomas ever since they served together. Carried each other to the med tent, survived ambushes and mines together. Had Thomas had a mind for it, he would have gone AWOL just to be with him. Had it been legal, he would have married the man.
But Thomas Wayne was as straight as they come, and while he respected Alfred and loved him as a brother, did not reciprocate romantic interest. So Alfred had prepared to move on with his life when Thomas hired him on as a butler. It was only after their deployment that Alfred realized that his beloved friend was extremely rich. Of course, he accepted the job. He was there to help Martha throughout the pregnancy. He was there to help Thomas calm down when she went into labor prematurely with hypertension. He held both of their hands throughout the process, and he'd always seen Bruce as a surrogate son. He just... didn't dare say so until now.
What had he to lose? His "job"? So Alfred suggests Bruce take a different track. Build charitable organizations that provide employment to the under-employed, but also serve as watchtowers throughout the city. Nerve centers for the Night Wing. And in so doing, Bruce ingratiates himself to the public, gradually spending down his own wealth into an organization whose end-goal objective by the final season, is to have broken the corruption of the mob, shaken the police departments down to spare parts and built up new community support structures. Not perfect, but better.
Decriminalization of drugs, sex work, and other poverty-survival tools, while increasing penalties for embezzlement, bribery, and other crimes of power. Arkham gets closed, demolished, and turned into a memorial park to the victims of the Joker and the other villains. Arkham's patients get permanent residencies in much more modernized hospitals. Therapists with adequate training, minimal use of meds, except where absolutely necessary. The last episode shows Bruce stopping in to walk with Jack, the man who went as Joker for so many years.
The show ends on a hopeful note, leaving room for a better future without promising perfection.

the bakarina anime is done! it’s just a drop in the ocean that is the otome isekai genre so these are some recs + what you need to know about them. i just listed most of my favs otherwise it’d be too long :p
in no particular order. includes some non-isekai ones too. needless to say most of these aren’t completed yet
my next life as a villainess: all routes lead to doom
using this to plug that there’s more bakarina content in the form of light novels, manga and 3 spin-offs
an observation record of my fiancee - a self-proclaimed villainess
told in the pov of prince cecil, whose fiancee bertia straight up tells him she’s a villainess of an otome game from her past life
if you ever wonder what jeord from bakarina might be thinking half the time, this is probably close. cecil is the same kind of prince who initially finds things bored and predictable until they met the mc
the things cecil would get up to for bertia? hoo boy
also the way the mangaka draws hair is addicting to look at
the villainess cecilia silvie doesn’t want to die so she decided to crossdress
the title speaks for itself~ after remembering an otome game she played in her past life, cecil (previously cecilia) is now the one capturing the hearts of the academy ladies instead
it’s fairly new so there’s not much of it yet :c but it’s pretty interesting
the original otome game had a whole rpg combat system going on and i’m hyped to see how it’s gonna lead the story
the Angelique vibes are strong in this one
the villainess wants to marry a commoner
isabella used to play an otome game in a past life, but she was really only interested in a side character named ursch. and then one day she finds him in her mansion garden
her past life self is such a mood - i too have 100% otome games in hopes of side characters getting hidden routes but alas
definitely deserves the ‘video game’ tag. isabella can see status screens and character stats/skills etc, and all the gacha rewards and grinding transferred over after her reincarnation. she’s the isekai female protag we’ve always wanted
seriously the main ship is too op for their own good aha
deathbound duke’s daughter
in a past life, erika only managed to finish 2.5/7 scenarios of an otome game thanks to an unlucky encounter with knife-kun. with the different flags of her impending doom approaching, she takes things into her own hands years before the game events start
very fantasy-oriented (the most on this list) and pretty action-packed, once you get past the game exposition in the first 3? chapters
the world building is brilliant, from the hafan mages to the aurelian alchemists, and there’s beasts and wands and spells and dnd stuff sprinkled in
the cast has quite interesting dynamics and interwoven plotlines, and they’re all dorky in their way :>
beware of the villainess
melissa remembers a novel from her past life and desperately tries to cut off contact with the male leads, but they still make her life hell & she rages
she’s just so done with everyone and you can’t help but relate to her
definitely the funniest on this list XD melissa and her reactions takes the cake but even the shit characters are hilarious in their own way
there’s also a lot of parodies to memes etc & best of all, there’s cussing. all the shits and fucks. a whole lot of it
it’s great
death is the only ending for the villainess
penelope wakes up as the villainess from a game she’d been playing in her past life, only right now it's on the hardest difficulty where death is literally everywhere. thus she tries, well, not dying
what’s cool about this is that penelope has access to the original game system. she can see menus, choice options etc. the male leads even have affection percentages floating above their heads :> which is always cool to see (and what i’m a sucker for)
but it’s definitely one of the darker ones on this list. iirc there’s depictions of violence, abuse, drugs and then some. just a fair warning
the daughter of albert house wishes for ruin
upon realizing that she’s the villainess from a past-life otome game, mary decides to stay as one. chaos ensues
i love this manga so much, everyone is so quirky and there’s something to laugh about on almost every page. the story almost feels self-aware of itself and just lets the characters do whatever. like ride bikes
addie is so cute ;o;
it’s definitely something everyone should experience
i’m a villainess daughter so i’m going to keep the last boss
one of the finished ones!
post-annulment, aileen pulls a Lisa Tepes and asks the demon king claude to marry her. he refuses. hijinks ensues
mostly on the fantasy side, as it builds on the world of the monsters
the cast is pretty fun! aileen’s smart, funny and pretty competent in her own right. plus she and claude are positively adorable together
milady just wants to relax
post-annulment, ronia decides to open a cafe in the countryside. it later becomes the frequent hangout of a beastmen mercenary group, who are intensely feared by the townsfolk
well... beastmen. that’s all you need to know /wink
okay, that aside, it’s just as chill as the title suggests. ronia slowly makes friends she can trust, and the beastmen find a second home in the only cafe that’s willing to accept them. it’s pretty wholesome
the banished villainess! living the leisurely life of a nun making revolutionary food
despite actively trying to change her ‘villainess from a past-life otome game’ fate since childhood, elizabeth gets annulled, her noble title stripped, and is sent to a church in a neighboring kingdom. she enjoys it more than expected, despite the appearance of the ever watchful leonid
there’s plenty of 21st-century food like sandwiches, cotton candy leonid’s muscles <3
the entire cast is lovable, and can chris get an f for all the heart attacks leonid keep giving him
seduce the villain’s father
yereninovica (or just yerenica) realizes that she’s in the world of a novel she read in her past life, but as the aunt of said novel’s mc. after thwarting a kidnapping that’s basically the mc’s origin story, she takes it upon herself to also prevent the tragic death of emperor belgoat
a bit different since it switches the roles around (side character x side character) and goes into the “parent generation” of the original work
there’s also an interesting bit where the world seems to recognize her as a hijacker, and where that takes her, we’ll see in due time :o:
plus the way yeni habitually calls him ‘father’ cracks me up every time
transferred to another world but i’m the savior of an otome game
after a ritual gone wrong, “yamada tarou” (fake name) is stuck in the world of an otome game. the only way back is with a magical ring, normally obtained after becoming the lover of one of the male leads. he of course says no i’m going adventuring but the game doesn’t like that
it’s absolutely hilarious - the leads treat our mc like a heroine, and there’s a lot of otome tropes that are called out on/parodied. like the seiyuus’ names oh my god
tarou’s reactions are great and his appraisal skill is the funniest thing alive
endo and kobayashi’s live commentary on the villainess
in modern japan, endo and kobayashi start their playthrough of an otome game, which becomes a bit glitchy and odd. they discover that siegward, a male lead in the game, can hear what they’re saying. they use this chance to finally give lisolette a happier ending
much of the story’s focus is on the characters slowly warming up to lisolette, and a bit on endo/kobayashi’s irl relationship. despite being the primary drive of the story, lisolette herself hardly moves the plot - if you know what i mean
regardless it’s undeniably adorable
tearmoon empire
no isekai, more of time travel? chronoskimming?
mia wakes up 10 years in the past after being sentenced to death. now afraid of guillotine-kun, she strives to solve the issues in her kingdom that had previously led to her doom
a bit similar to bakarina in terms of concept: avoid death flags, unknowingly recruits the people she meets into her little saintess cult. the misinterpretation is very strong, and in brilliantly funny ways
it has really fun narration ngl especially in the light novel
of course, i’ll claim palimony!
to prepare for her annulment, yulia starts scheming recording her fiance’s meetups with the heroine to use as evidence. if you’re gonna lose a suitor, might as well get some money out of it, right? along the way she gets involved with rudonik, one of the male leads
no reincarnation. rather than an otome game, the villainess story comes from a book written by a side character, and the “heroine” just decided to play it out in real life
the cast together is a riot, and it’s entertaining to watch yulia only think in profits and every connection she can make to achieve it
the villainess’ slow prison life began with her broken engagement
no isekai, just a plain old villainess
post-annulment, rachel is sentenced to imprisonment. which she enjoys and is thoroughly, hilariously prepared for
everyone’s a little afraid of rachel and for good reason. it’s better to find out yourself through the LN or manga, but let’s just say that even the king doesn’t want to deal with her XD
the holy grail of eris
now this one is interesting, putting the villainess trope into a mystery ghost story. that said, no isekai either
our innocent heroine constance attends a party and encounters scarlet, an executed villainess from ten years ago. a body possession and some public embarrassment later, they decide to team up to solve the mystery that might be behind scarlet’s death
i mean, ghost villainess? sign me up
+ some honorable mentions
i favor the villainess (the heroine goes for the villainess- girls? girls? yes)
a bellicose lady got reincarnated (a delinquent reincarnates as a heroine; what a concept :o unfortunately there’s not a lot of english content for it yet)
it seems i got reincarnated into a yandere otome game (i like that the mc actively makes it so that game can’t ever happen the way it should; plus, yanderes are always interesting to study)
inso’s law (modern isekai, and quite cute!)
the reincarnated young lady aims to be an adventurer / holy guardian tiger (similar to deathbound duke’s daughter in that there’s more of a focus on the fantasy aspect)
expecting to fall into ruin, i aim to become a blacksmith (so far the only one with a shounen tag that i like; its main charm is probably the cast and their interactions with each other eliza best girl)
since i’ve reincarnated as the villainess’ father i’ll shower my wife and daughter with love (big big wholesome vibes)
level 99 villainous daughter (severely op lady who takes no shit from the people looking down at her, and regularly thinks about blowing up the academy within the first 4 chapters? hell yeah)
may i please just ask one last thing? (post-annulment, the mc literally punches everyone in the room; it’s great)
this is getting long now oops
edit: i also made a visual-friendly personally-tagged-by-me bookshelf here!
