i'm actually so facinated by people having the same or very similiar takes on Rimmer as i've seen people have of the Captain, and like, they're correct. these two dead, repressed, traumatizes, snarky, military fuck-ups do share quite a bit of personality, so i get why some takes and headcannons would be similiar. but still, seeing the excact same take on a new blorbo that i held for an old blorbo is super freaky. and now that i'm aware of it i have come to a realisation that scares me a bit, and it is that rimster is just patcap in space.

Okay so the map-territory relation is the idea that a map that perfectly represents a territory and everything about it, would have to be a 1:1 map and therefore useless. The map is not the territory, it's an abstraction of the territory, it's the shadows on the walls of the cave. Annihilation proposes that a map is more than an abstraction; it's a deception, because it makes some parts of a territory visible and hides others. Artifacts from Area X look normal when you look at them but the scientists think they get weird again when you look away, like Area X itself doesn't want to be studied or understood. (Maybe it just wants to be experienced, fully experienced with all the senses and without the urge to make records that are only abstractions of the real thing?) The psychologist suggests that Area X isn't changing the biologist so much as it's making her more of what she already was. Is the thing you become in Area X the most real, true version of yourself, unaccosted by the observation and analysis of others? Is that what you are when you're not looking? The clones are maps of their people, having very similar appearances but lacking a certain level of depth and detail. Are the clones abstractions, or are they abstractions of abstractions?
