How often do you use references in your artwork and if so, how do you find the perfect reference?
Hi thank you for the question!
Not exactly sure how I can quantify it, but I’d say more often then not. My process for using references is usually to start with an idea and sketch out how I want it to look. Then find a similar (it’s rare to find something that’s exactly what you’re looking for) pose on either google or Pinterest and use it to improve on what I already have.
Tumblr media
Other times, if I have no specific ideas I just scroll through Pinterest photos and find something I like or find interesting! These can be ref models, photo shoots, or even pose reference/drawing bases from other artists that give you “skeletons” or grid lines on how to draw the pose. Then I use it as inspo and edit the pose to fit what I want. It’s a bit hard to explain, but I hope it makes sense.
As you notice I rarely post full pieces of art, but rather individual drawings in a compilation of sorts. I think it helps me practice lots of new poses with references that at least marginally match the reference photos I’m using. I hope this helps!

[surfaces from the deep with art in tow]
'tis i, the purveyor of fem!kinnporsche lookbooks, this time bearing kimchay. if you missed the kinnporsche one it's here. if you didn't, you know the drill, thoughts and refs beneath the cut.
okay let's start with kim:
i'm gonna be real with you folks: i struggled hard with fem!kim. in my head, kim much like fem!kinn is someone who uses her clothes to send messages, but where kinn is trying to communicate power and authority, kim is instead using her clothes to adopt different personas or elements of her personality. and so, i can see fem!kim wearing nearly everything, basically.
kimlor swift aka wik aka internet popstar kim
so, return customers may notice something odd about kim: i gave her different poses for each of her personas. why? i think kim is someone who embodies a lot of different personas, and i think the change is more than skin deep.
this was very much the first set i drew. the brief for these outfits in my head was something like "k-pop kim possible". also a lot of these were drawn when i still had covid lmao so i barely remember most of it.
it was very important to me that kim had a wolf cut. that fact came to me the moment i started thinking about fem!kim. so. you know. you're welcome.
runing errands (first outfit) - this one was the first outfit i drew for kim, and it was mostly summoned up from my own head. i spent a lot of time scrolling through pinterest before i started drawing. in my head, this is sort of what she wears when she's out and about as wik but not like, performing or whatever. still a very crafted image, but a little more casual than her performance gear.
performance (second outfit) - this one does have a ref! i found this image on pinterest and was like yes. this one. i thought long and hard about what i wanted wik's fashion and persona to be, because i debated going along the family friendly singer-songstress route, but in the end i figured she had to be cool and a little edgy. hence [gestures at the clothes].
award show/red carpet (third outfit) - this one's kind of fun. longtime listeners will recall that i started drawing these lookbooks bc @mortimerlatrice told me they didn't think fem!kinn would wear dresses and i had to disprove them -- so i thought it'd be fun if for kim, she only wore dresses when on mafia business. kim in a dress is a blaring warning signal that you're gonna get your shit rocked. so, kim's award show look is a pantsuit. she doesn't wear dresses at all as wik. there was definitely a reference image for this one, but i drew the entirety of this first set when i had covid, so i don't think i saved it OTL
detective wikachu aka mafia kim
another fun detail you might notice about mafia!kim -- she's always got her hair up. that was also deliberate. also holy shit this set killed me so bad. we'll get there.
running errands (detective errands) (first outfit) - this is what kim wears when she's gotta blackmail randos for info. fairly casual, all things told, but very different in vibe to her wik stuf. also the pattern on that suit is incredibly simple but it took me 45 mins to create bc i still had covid brainfog at this point. the reference for this look was celine's spring/summer 2021 rtw collection look 24.
visiting dad (to snoop) (second outfit) - another source of debate for me. what, exactly, does kim send as a message to her father when she comes back home? i played with the idea of her wearing a sort of perfectly pretty mafia princess disguise, but i don't think that's what she'd use to get on her father's good side. so, she's wearing a dress (fuck your shit up vibes for her) but it's got a strong vibe to it. so, i had to go with alexander mcqueen, which is one of my favourite designers. this one is specifically alexander mcqueen pre-fall 2022 look 17.
at a gala (mafia-flavoured) also to snoop (third outfit) - oh my god you guys will not believe how many of these i went through. i even fully drew another option before discarding it completely. (originally, i was going to go with erdem pre-fall 2023 look 8 which i drafted here but i just didn't vibe with it the more i worked on it. i guess it felt a little too princessy? so i pivoted.) this one is from another of those designers i actually really like, zuhair murad. this one's from fall 2022 couture, specifically look 38. very much love at first sight. the moment i saw it, i knew i was gonna draw it. and oh boy did drawing it make me suffer. that bead pattern on the dress? killed me. actually killed me. fucking OW. worth it though.
family portrait (fourth outfit) - after all the suffering of kim's formal look this one was comparatively a breeze. found a pic on pinterest, and whoosh i went drawing. the reference is here.
chay!kim
this set is very much what it says on the tin, the clothes kim wears around chay. let's go.
guitar tutoring (first outfit) - okay so in my head the brief for this one was "what kim thinks chay thinks wik wears on her downtime", which very much sets the tone for the entire outfit. i just think it's fun if kim twists herself out of sorts with how clever she is and then chay just bulldozes straight through that. i don't actually have a reference for this one. just drew it.
rescue chay (second outfit) - this is what kim wears to go save chay from the tawan kidnapping. i dubbed this one "when you got library study session at 9, rescue bae at 12, and cyberpunk revolution at 3". the loose inspo for this one was this dress on pinterest which i tracked to the brand ganni and then found they no longer made.
say no to drugs, chay (third outfit) - okay so i wanted this outfit to be like. a wake up call to chay. the first time chay sees kim in a skirt, and the first time chay realises that maybe kim is a little dangerous. it's alexander mcqueen (ofc it is) and actually in the time between me drawing this and posting it, someone actually wore the skirt from this look on the red carpet. it's the spring 2023 rtw collection, look 24. salma hayek wore the skirt to the 2023 brits here.
the youtuber apology video fit (fourth outfit) - the brief here was "kim forcibly bolting on hinges". the idea was to kind of soften her mafia edges but leave the cornerstones of how she dresses for that very much there. so, dress, hair up, but much more relaxed. this outfit is from tommy hilfiger's spring 2023 rtw collection, specifically look 17.
onto chay:
chay was really hard to start with, i'm going to be real. i think the sum total for my notes when i started was just one word: dungarees? as i drew more of her i started to think of her as someone who thrifts and then alters a lot of her clothes. i wanted colour and patterns, and i suffered for them. by god did i suffer.
a few lil headcanons i have about her:
i think chay probably finds it easy to be considered cute and hard to move out of that box. i think there's a part of chay that wants to be sexy the way porsche is (ESPECIALLY if this is a fem!porsche universe) but doesn't know how to go about trying to achieve that. she had to ask yok how to teach her how to apply eyeliner bc porsche doesn't know how to and doesn't care to learn.
i think the role of like, female role model/influence in chay's life is later taken up by fem!kinn, who is full of the kind of advice porsche would be horrified to hear given to her precious baby sister.
chay has short hair because when she had long hair porsche was obsessed with getting her the right shampoos and conditioners and stuff to take care of it (probs based on some internalised stuff from when porsche was at school and girls would mock her for her split ends) so chay just puts a stop to that by cutting all her hair off and it turns out she kind of likes it? so she keeps it.
casual outfits
i drew all these patterns myself. from scratch. you're welcome.
green dungarees (first outfit) - the reference image is here. this was the first look i drew and also the moment i realised how stupid i was to choose a "fun" foot pose for chay. this caused no end of suffering going forward.
orange dungarees (second outfit) - ref here. here i started to regret the pattern aspect of my chay design. also those messy canvas ankle boots killed me to draw. they were so hard.
sweater vest (third outfit) = MORE FUCKING PATTERNS. i also had a reference for this one somwhere but i was drawing this whilst playing dnd so i think it just got lost.
special outfits
school uniform (first outfit) - i did a bit of looking into school uniforms in thailand and from what i can tell they basically all look very similar. idk if the lilac shirt + navy skirt combo is standardised for girls but it was pretty much all i found when i went looking. also she has a long skirt because when she and porsche bought it for her, they bought a really big one that she could wear all through school.
one (1) smart dress (second outfit) - the idea here is that this is the one smart item of clothing that chay has, and it's the one-size-fits-all-occasions dress. it's dark so it can be worn to funerals. it's somewhere between business and formal so it can be worn to both those kinds of occasions. it was based on this dress i found on pinterest.
going to a concert with friends (third outfit) - i... just wanted to put chay in a bucket hat? yeah that's all i have. no ref. just my mind.
porsche's first paycheque present (fourth outfit) - the idea here was that after getting some money from the whole mafia thing, porsche buys this as a present for chay. maybe it's a dress chay's always looked at when they walk past it in a shop window? this is a slight tweak on this dress by alaia. the original's like £2k which i cannot picture porsche and chay spending on a dress but shhh it's fine.
post-kim
these are the outfits from after the whole kim debacle goes down. i just really wanted to draw goth chay. and really, who wouldn't?
break-up era #1 (first outfit) - at this point i was just having way too much fun. the pattern took for-fucking-ever on the skirt though, because i thought i'd just cheekily re-use the dungaree flower pattern with colour changes but oh no that didn't work at all. i had to edit it so much. the reference is here. here her hair is freshly dyed blue, and she's given herself a little heartbreak undercut. you go girl.
say no to drugs chay (second outfit) - this is what chay is wearing when kim points at that rando in the club who offers chay drugs. you see all of the goth reference images i was finding were just too clean-cut and employable, you know? so torn fishnets it was. the refence i found for this is here but i changed it up bc i couldn't see chay wearing a little nightdress to go clubbing no matter how heartbroken she was.
visiting mum (third outfit) - in this one, in my head, chay has dyed her hair back to normal, but she's still got the undercut, so she straightens her hair and pins a little of it over the short bit to try and appear a little more normal chay to her mum. very simple outfit, no refs.
family portrait (fourth outfit) - there's a part of me which delights in this implied scenario because i just think it's funny if chay and kim are posing for a family portrait with kinnporsche and chay's ready to ignore the fuck out of kim and pretend like she doesn't care about her staring but then kim is in full-hide-any-weakenesses mode because korn's there so now chay's the one staring. relationship status: it's very awkward. anyway fashion wise i wanted two things from chay's outfit: for it to be simpler than any of the theerapanyakuls' and for it to be in a lighter shade of porsche's colour (blue). the reference was this cool dress i found on pinterest.
[exhales] is that everything? i think that's everything. obligatory tag for @yeetlegay bc i know they like to see the fem!kinnporsche content.
big shoutout to mort (tagged earlier), @antique-forvalaka, @luckydragon10, and @dr-lemurr for art troubleshooting and cheerleading duties.
everything was drawn in clip studio paint, which i cannot recommend enough. if you want more detailed info abt that side of things, send me an ask.

hi would you ever post your drawing process? i’ve noticed you do research when it comes to stuff like finding references to age up characters properly, making the characters’ styles accurate for their time, etc.
sometimes you don’t realize how much goes into art besides the sketches, drawing, rendering, all that stuff, so the little things like that which make a big difference in the end is so cool to notice, you’re a really inspiring artist for me! your art style is incredible and i’d love to see what goes through your head before drawing something, if that’s alright with you ofc.
like what’s your inspiration? what shaped your art style? do you use references and how often bc sometimes i see some poses you draw and think ok there HAD to be a reference used for this bc it’s too good but i understand finding refs for what’s going on your head is difficult a lot of times so i just chalk it up to you being skilled enough to guess how the anatomy would work (so much praise for artists like that because??? insane talent! not to say using refs makes artists less skilled or anything 😭😭 hope it didn’t come off that way)
OK WOW THAT WAS A LOT IM SORRY!
oh where to begin…
I usually get ideas of what I want to do, but it’s not until I open the canvas that my hand just knows what to do I guess? There’s times when I can just paste what’s in my head on the canvas and times when I struggle more and I have to look for references/trace poses (which are usually me with really bad lightening around my room or yeah, pics from pinterest)
lol funny story, my one drawing of James, Lily and Harry dancing I recorded myself dancing and got screenshots of that to base the poses on…. I accidentally sent one to a person that was commissioning me at the time, most embarrasing moment of my life
ANYWHOO! In terms of clothes, I have a board for every character where I put like what I think their style entails. Cause I like it when they look like teenagers in the 70s
Here’s my process when i just vomit my idea on the canvas
there are some where I don’t have the patience or the project is too big (ex. the panels) and figuring out the anatomy would be too time consuming, so i trace the pose but i’ve been trying to do that less and less to make myself actually work and get better at anatomy
Tumblr media
and what shaped my artstyle? wow that’s a hard question lol, idk
I think i’ve picked things from artists i’ve liked and just created a frankenstein of it, little by little and without realizing it.
not that my art looks ANYTHING like theirs, but these are some of the artists that have inspired me a lot through my art journey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hope i answered your question jsjsjs

This is unrelated to the story but I was wondering where you find reference images for cats? All the art you do for RisingClan is so beautiful and the cats always have such cool and interesting poses. I struggle to find anything but super basic photos of cats online (like just generic sitting or standing poses,) and I really want to find more complex poses to study. Also, I’ve been drawing refs for a bunch of my own ClanGen kitties and their poses are starting to look very same-y, so I’m desperate for some pose Inspo lol
Good question!
I use pinterest, mostly. I have a board full of cat photos that i browse through when i need a reference. To find them I search things like "cat running" "cats fighting" "cats walking side by side" and then I let myself wander through the recommended pictures and save whatever I like. Hope this helps! Good luck with your art!

hey i also have an oc thats a mechanical engineer like blueberry but iim havin troubles to find good poses that arent boring stock ones . May i know how or where to look poses for my oc?
hello fellow mechanical engineer oc haver! 🤝
to be honset I also struggled, I found few pics on google to use them as pose refs few times? like few sketches in this post
but honestly I would suggest you browse through pinterest - a hole to spend hours in, but i do find nice refs there sometimes
for example here what i found while searching for "mechanical engineer"
Tumblr media
here is the link to pinterest post iteslf and a lot of similar photos as suggestions bellow it - this way you can find some other refs like that
or for example this one:
Tumblr media
link to the post, with lots of cool similar suggestions bellow as well
of course Pinterest isnt the best place ever, often don't have source for the origins, adds, and I can see damn disgustion ai pictures in suggestions as well
but its easy for me to use once in a while
also try to look for different things too, while looking for poses? i mean you could search for "man fixing car/refrigirator/radio/airplane/etc" as well or backroom staff working on some sci-fi movie or making props, like alien or star trek or expanse and etc
also also just in general i suggest to do life sketch studdies sometimes
idk what else to suggest, i also am not super aware of how to draw scifi stuff even though i like it much ;')

i'm so obsessed with ur colour choices and painterly style, if u don't mind sharing, could you explain a bit about your process when it comes to ur art? thank u!!!
ahh thank you! i guess i’ll use this recent akiangle piece bc it’s one of the more recent finished paintings. long post up ahead sry
0. sit in lecture and think about what i can be drawing instead of listening for 3 hours about urbicide.
1. sketch concept - i like to use the emilyamiao linebrush 3 for this, it’s really good for life drawing too. usually i just save a bunch of poses on pinterest to use as reference later
Tumblr media
2. refining bc the sketch is messy; i don’t do another round of lineart so this is the cleanest it gets
Tumblr media
3. basic colours with kyle webster wet gouache brush <3 it really gives a nice watercolour texture which i’m currently digging. sometimes i use lasso tool for this step too
Tumblr media
3. fuck around on a new layer using a really big brush size; i like to change opacities and go through all the procreate layer modes until i find a colour palette i like. early stages of colours i dont like going into details much
Tumblr media
4. ???????? get serious
Tumblr media
5. giving up on initial concept and going for a black background
Tumblr media
6. kyle webster cool drag brush for some texture, lasso tool on luminosité (brightness? it’s the last layer mode on procreate idk the actual eng name sry) layer to block shading (v inspired by chuwenjie for this)
Tumblr media
7. colour adjustments to make colours boring again but atleast it’s more cohesive ??
Tumblr media
this is what the layers usually look like at the end. no i dont know what’s going on either. it’s a nightmarish process and not a workflow i recommend
Tumblr media
finish with chromatic abberation :)
Tumblr media
this isn’t a very detailed piece so it’s a bit more straightforward, but sometimes i also like to start with 3d modelling and taking multiple shots to render later. sometimes i take my assignments and make it into fanart lol. usually i do like incorporating architecture in my art as well and looking at all the ref pics i save in pure ref :)

Is there anywhere you recommend finding reference poses? I have trouble finding interesting poses, especially if I'm looking for something more specific and i find it hard to make my own references
it can be tough, especially since google is getting worse and worse (and so is pinterest, tho i've only started looking for poses on pinterest recently -- and so far i don't think it's very good for looking for specific ref, i just tuck away stuff that looks fun for later and then dig in there if i don't have any ideas for warmups).
here's an ask i answered in the past with some starting points (senshistock is now known as adorkastock, though!); i'll specifically highlight that, while tedious, the "find videos of the thing you're drawing and pause repeatedly" method can be a lifesaver, especially if you're looking for really specific types of action or fabric movement. also, i'll bring up that if adorkastock doesn't have what you need, it's very likely that SOMEBODY on dA does -- a lot of the photo stock there tends to be created specifically with aiding artists in mind which means it's easier to find poses/ref that lends itself specifically to character illustration from there (fantasy-esque poses, weapons, etc) vs wading through dumb-looking corporate stock on google

You probably do a lot of life drawing seeing as how perfectly fluid your art always is so this ask might be redundant lol but,, i was wondering what kind of references you usually use? Do you just google similar poses, does it come from your mind, or do you have a go-to app to look through like pinterest?👉👈 i ask bc I struggle a lot with poses and usually when i look them up i end up drawing nothing bc its not. Ever good enough for me/what im looking for lol😔 still not sure how to even draw characters smoochin, rip
thank you, nonny!! i do a lil bit of life drawing, but man i really do feel the same way you do. while i'm happy to show some art when i get it done, the process can be a real struggle.
sorry this is gonna be long and all over the place lol hope it helps tho:
life drawing good: i recommend ditching the idea of finding the 100% Perfect Ref right off the bat. studying anatomy and life drawing (this site has a range of body types and fun poses) somewhat regularly, therefore growing my mental library so that i can try and make whatever pose is in my head happen later, has been more viable to me than spending hours looking for the Perfect Ref.
drawing a bunch of generic people skating without pressure of creating proper character art is good practice, and it primes me to then come up with a skating pose of my own.
ref hunting: i save pictures i might use as refs regularly in a browser folder - good refs, bad refs, boring refs - losing a ref standard can be helpful because at the end of the day it’s what you make with it, so it doesn’t have to be particularly mind-blowing to begin with. you don’t wanna reinvent the wheel or create the most never-been-done-before pose, you just wanna get a thing right.
pinterest is very good for poses, yes, though you have to know how to look for them - i.e. i found that typing out "dynamic pose" will not yield organic results, as opposed to looking up people in motion like athletes, boxers, skaters and such. for fighting, i recommend using photos or clips from (ideally staged lol) fights, as opposed to stock images where the models are standing for a while posing - the former preserves a lot of the movement. i also recommend looking up group photos from events or shows for interesting natural poses and people interacting.
best hot tip of all tho: what helped me most is to not treat references very religiously. don't be tied down by what's in your ref, or not finding the perfect one, because then you're focusing on accuracy and not necessarily on what you wanna communicate with your drawing. if you can't find what you're looking for in full, just use a part that you find interesting, and then bullshit the rest and revise accordingly.
idea-generating can be very hard but you can practice it like any other skill, because having a decent idea of what you wanna draw is helpful - you don't have to have the whole pose visualised 100%. it's the mood, body language and expressions, that i think are more important. looking at refs can help reveal your ideas and intentions, but i will not create them for you i’m afraid.
for example, speaking on characters smooching, i've drawn these using refs in   pretty uptight way with no ideas beforehand - and i find them painfully boring because they're not rly communicating anything aside from a anatomical accuracy (more or less);
Tumblr media
i was being too intent on staying faithful to the reference, and they're looking kinda stale to me. the only one that was done without any ref, was the bottom left - which i like! bc it's got spice and it’s portraying some emotion.
but i wouldn't have drawn it if i hadn't already started on the others, so maybe another good tip is to trust the process and not give up mid-work!! drawing stuff you’re not proud of is still drawing stuff, and not everything you create is gonna be satisfying. things are gonna click here and there, but you never know when, so don’t give up on your ugly artsy ducklings!!

Sorry if you got this asked before but I'm so in love with your artwork, how did you get so good at anatomy and posing? I struggle a lot with it.
omg HI TY TY !!!! uuuhm tbh it was mainly 4 things for me: using irl pics as ref, using my artgods' art as ref, obsessing over proportions until it becomes second nature to you fr, and 3d models or posing apps .... [some examples and entire ramblings under the cut i got carried away AGH]
using irl pics as reference - i literally go on pinterest n combine several photos 2 get the pose i want, [or when it comes to hands i take pics of my own lol] i usually browse through magazine photoshoots or pics of statues n find stuff with cool poses .... this also applies to other stuff rlly like for clothing folds i would pick out parts that would look and feel right and interpret it in my own wayyy
Tumblr media
find an artist with a Banger sense of anatomy n use their stuff as reference - bonus points if ur artgods have a semi realistic style n ur already obsessed with their stuff like Seriously the other half of my ref photos are other ppl's art and i would copy the way they draw certain things - i also actively observe How they draw these certain things like "oh this is actually in a triangle shape" or "oh theres a bump here and its followed by a straightish line" and i am mindful of these, i make sure to remember them even just the tiniest change bc that's still an improvement yk a different way of thinking abt something - love these accs for anatomy [tomfoxdraws, taco1704, kato_anatomy], this artist is great at simplifying their ref but still keeping it dynamic and flowy [UTWP_], and this acc for more general tips but with timelapses so u can see how they go about drawing something [KawaiiSensei_jp] <- theres also some anatomy stuff there toooo also SORRY literally 4/5 of these accs are in japanese or korean i just look at stuff n think about it no need to read :sob:
study up on proportions n figure out ways 2 simplify stuff using basic shapes - thanking my 12 year old self for being so nitpicky abt proportions like, i used to "measure" the length of the limbs and from doing that i learned how a bunch of stuff works like halfway point of the torso is also where elbows are, hands end midthigh, thigh usually as long as torso etcetc and since i got so used to "measuring" these it's just muscle memory for me atp, its all about the observations ur honor - for simplifying stuff its like, breaking something down to its basic shapes like how the hand can be a square or a triangle with a bunch of circles or cylinders attached to it, how the torso can be a rectangle circle or triangle depending on the body type etcetc - once again its actively observing and keeping what u learned in mind and doing it over and over again until it Sticks and u can change stuff n improve on it as u learn more about it
Tumblr media
3d models / posing apps - literally only just started using these. a month or two ago ??? but i find these Very useful for when i have Such a specific pose in mind or when im too lazy to find or take ref pics WOOPS i also use irl ref pics when posing my 3d model btw im not That lazy KJSDFSDF
Tumblr media
oh and i watched jjba and that singlehandedly made me like muscles and want to study how to draw them help there's that too ig ..... I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS MAKES SENSE ITS ALL JUST MOSTLY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE HOPE THIS HELPS !!!!!!!!

hello! just wanted to let you know that i've been a fan of your art for many years. you're one of my favorite artists and i keep your username on a little .txt (along with a couple other artists) so i can always remember who i look up to and who i hope to become as good as someday.
i love your art. all of it. even the transformers fanart, and i don't even like transformers. i especially like your choice in colors (and i never see anyone comment on it!! it's such a key component to your style and nobody talks about it!!) but i also take inspiration from your lineart and poses. the way you draw teeth is unsettling but it grabs the viewer's attention, it might as well be your style's trademark.
i'm an artist, too, and i'm not nearly as popular as you are. (... probably because i'm only on twitter, i post infrequently, and when i post i only post ocs lol.) i just want to say that you've been one of my biggest inspirations and your art drives me forward. it reminds me that if someone can continue as long as you've been going, then i can continue, too.
i haven't always had a tumblr account. i made a couple just recently, and today i remembered that you exist, so i came to your blog. and read through it. all the way back to 2019. and liked several of your posts. so if you see a rando that liked a bunch of your old posts and left you a follow, that would be me. ^^;
since i didn't have a tumblr account, how did i know about your art? well, a lot of it (mostly your JJBA fanart) is on pinterest. some of it is even credited 😭 (pinterest users are notorious for reposting fanart without linking back to the creator). so yeah, your art is on pinterest, sometimes it's credited, sometimes it isn't. but yeah, you've got a ton of fans on pinterest that can't make their presence known to you. we all support you from afar until the day we make tumblr accounts.
this got long. sorry for being weird. i promise i'll buy from your shop and support you more directly someday, but for now i remain a broke nerd. don't feel like it's necessary to respond to this, i just wanted to let you know that you inspire a lot of people, even though you probably already know that.
your art is wonderful and i encourage you to continue with it! please stay safe and take care of yourself. and... thanks for reading my little essay ^^
Ohhh Lovely Anon;;
This is genuinely so, so sweet, and I've been thinking for two hours now how I should even reply to this because I'm very touched by it ;_;
Thank you so, so much, seriously. I'm happy you like my colours, that's honestly a great thing to hear because I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with them;
It means tons to me when people enjoy what I do, whether I can see it or not, so this all means so fucking much to me; I don't know what to say really other than Thank You a million times over, seriously. You people have been keeping me going for years now by just enjoying stuff I doodle <3 I've found my drawings on pinterest before too when looking for refs of characters and it means a lot to me that there are people like you who go out of their way to find me still ;__; Thank you!
And you don't need to buy anything from me at all <3 I appreciate anyone looking at stuff I've made! Thank you so much for taking the time to write me such a lovely message!
I wish you the absolute Best for yourself and your path as an artist, always keep on doing what you love no matter what, and keep up your OCs!! <3 That's so powerful of you!! <3<3<3 Take good care!!

how do you search for period fashion for rote fanart? i want to make fanart but i feel lost on what period the stories are and what to search for good references
hello, and sorry for answering so late! honestly, i dont really search for anything in particular when making rote art, except for some pose refs etc, so i generally make up the clothing on the spot… that being said of course i brainstorm these outfits off of ~vibes and details of inspiration that i already have in my brain from liking to look at inspiring costumes or crafts and art, so you build your own little ”gallery” of inspiration if you will….. but unless its to draw a very specific item of clothing i dont actively go looking for stuff. what im trying to say is that i’m not the best person to ask this of BUT, some things i do:
im sure theres a LOT of neat historical fashion books out there, i’m bad with actually reading them but ive leafed through the one called ”the chronicle of western costume” by john peacock just because i really enjoy seeing the Silhouettes that different costumes make, and how theyre so different in different eras - simple shapes are always fun to play around with. to give an example (img from google because my book is at home… and also in german which i cant read. this looks like…. norwegian maybe? i just noticed…)
Tumblr media
bear in mind this is just one (1) book though, like i said i’m bad with reading but it would be fun to check out historical clothing from all corners of the world!
the other thing is to just… scroll around pinterest, simply because if you see a nice picture there will be so many more of a similar thing, so you get a general vibe. costumes from movies etc are always nice but generally not necessarily historically accurate though, but personally thats not a thing i mind for fantasy fanart!! i like to mix and match and also make stuff up…
just some general screenshots as examples:

so, sorry i cant be of more help but i hope it helps a tiny bit!!! honestly the thing with looking through books etc like that is most of all that it gives at least me that feeling of ”ooh pretty clothes….. i want to Draw,” so you get inspired to
also lastly, it makes me very glad to hear new people want to make fanart of these books, i’m unfortunately not very active anymore but from time to time i go in the tags or just look at old art and its so comforting and nice you know, like coming home after a long while…. just like……. how in the books fitz feels that homely feeling when the fool comes back etc, what if the real rote were the fandom we made all along etc etc

where do you find ur references? i usually cant find anything similar to what i have in mind so i have to mess around with anatomy for ages
Well most of my spn refs I've found on tumblr or homeofthenutty. If I'm looking for pose references I honestly find most of those on tumblr or pinterest. Whether they cross my dash or I have to search things like "mlm couple" "man in crop top" "back muscles" or whatever I need. I usually start there cuz there's less chance of getting stock photos. Pinterest comes in handy because of the "related photos" feature too. However, sometimes needs must and google has to deal with my "shot from above man walking" searches.
Anyways, I'm sure you do the same and trust me I understand the struggle of finding a reference for what you have in mind! Oh the hours I've spent. Sometimes I will search through unsplash.com, but usually when I need inspiration to strike as the results are very general. Croquiscafe is great and has a ton of model references, but it's $36 for a yearly subscription. There's also this collection if reference photos I saw in this tumblr post recently that looks super promising!
If you're okay with more abstract forms theres sites like posemy.art and justsketch.me that have 3D models in hundreds of poses or you can manipulate them yourself. I've also used posemaniacs.com which shows the human anatomy/muscular.
Hope some of these help!

What platform do you use to make your art?
Also any tips for very new artists who are bad at art
IbisPaint X!! Its free & im p sure its on most devices (i use my phone for like 90% of my art).
But sometimes ill plan out or make a rough draft of a piece on my tablet. Its an amazon one so its got like NO art apps...at all. But the best ive found thats free & its called ArtFlow!
As for tips about art, im like the worst at answering that since 90% of when im drawing im just fuckin around and attempting to find out. Most I can think of to say is below! [its a bit long oops]
1. Have fun with finding your style. My art style almost changes every year if not like multiple times a year. Hell if you look at how i drew HMS in like, March it looks very different than how i draw them now. But every time it changes i feel more confident in it! Also its just fun sometimes to draw in a different way :}
2. Its 100% chill if you ever feel burntout or feel like ya "lost the touch". Feel like its said a lot but you do get out of that pit (haha get it like the song) eventually and youll prolly even make something ur hella proud of! Also if its not goin great its good to take a br8k and maybe try the next day. Sometimes ya just be in a funk and its best to make sure ur all hydrated n rested. And a much as i don't listen to myself sometimes, those things rlly do help
3. Last thing i can think of is that its sometimes real difficult to find a good reference of somethin. Whether it be like a pose, an outfit or something, you can always use yourself as a ref! For things like a ref to look at or even to use as a base. And of course not everyone like taking a photo of themself (me included) but its not only very helpful and takes less time than searching through pinterest & google for like an hour, but helps you get confident in yourself! Ive never be confident in myself (specially with that gender dysphoria an all) but it helps to take a photo in a pose, outfit or even a half ass cosplay. Gettin used to yourself in a photo might take a bit but it takes you a good way.
Sorry if this didnt help im not quite good at tips and teaching things. If youd like more ideas/help with things like shading or somethin, id be happy to post a vid of like a speedpaint or something on how i color n stuff :}
Hope this helps!!! 💜

I think your lunter art is very neat. Do you think you could share your art process sometime?
awww thank you kind (maybe) stranger!
about the question tho… i'm an impostor and i don't know wtf i'm doing actually, and i'm not sure what exactly you're expecting, so combine it all and you'll get: i'll answear as i understood the task and you just send another ask if it's not what you meant
so here we go. art process:
1 turn pc on and open sai
2 stare at the white sheet for half an our
3 play genshin impact for six hours
4 turn pc off
5 turn it on the next day
6 (optional) get inspired by lil' kids / braindead antis / just your regular hatefull dumbdumbs' comments under your previously posted art (for OMG ships)
Tumblr media
7 scroll through pinterest to find a pose that doesn't look too boring for you to try to draw
Tumblr media
good thing you're smart enough to save them for the future just to nevere actually ever draw any of them
Tumblr media
8 toss the picked pose into your beloved white sheet and idk maybe trace it? just to understand wtf is going on and how to mimic it
Tumblr media
9 move your trac… kheM KHEM construction tip to the side and while looking at it and at the ref try your best to copy the pose as believable as you can
Tumblr media
(make sure to do it on millioms or at least couple of layers just cause you're insecure indecisive baby who has no idea wtf he's doing and wants an option to make some changes without completely fucking up everything more than he already did by opening sai in the first place)
Tumblr media
10 clean the lines the best you can
Tumblr media
(bonus task - do it on duplicated layers of your sketch, cause, remember, you're scared baby)
Tumblr media
11 color it as lazy as you can, just so you can always excuse your not knowing wft you're doing by "oh yeah it was just a low effort confident fast shit and not me being as unskilled as it possible for human being haha"
Tumblr media
12 oh shit you almost forgot to draken your so called lineartm didn't you?? well at least you didn't forget to color luz's arm or hunter face this time. i call it a win! (also you didn't forget to color on at least 3 separate layer too just for safty, did you?)
Tumblr media
13 nice job! go post it before 2 minutes past you hate the shit out of your newborn masterpie… oh well, it's been 3 minutes already. go post this ugly shit anyway. at least you won't be the only one cursed to see it
Tumblr media
THANK YOU FOR THE ASK BTW that was fun

Hi! :D regarding your recent art post, I really love seeing your art process, I think your coloring skills are especially impressive! May I ask, what website do you use for poses? It looks useful in your screenshots!
Hi! Anon! You're very kind. Thanks for the ask!:D
I'm gonna type google images Since I find quick refs in there mostly. but that seems too indifferent. So I want you to look through any "Stock Images" websites
Like Pexels and Unsplash there you just need the keywords to search for them, The images are high-quality and free to use. I hope you find something good and useful! bc I find the good stuff there. It’s optional like DeviantArt and Pinterest, ofc
app.posemy.art is let you create poses by using 3D models and you can rotate any angles that can be used for quick refs as well. I think it's a great way to start learning about 3D too
Hope this helps even just a bit. I hope you have a great day!
