helloo since we're on the topic: top historical fiction (or adjacent) ? can be any time period I just really love your taste in shows/games/etc and am always on the lookout for history inspired media !

thank you!!! im rly glad im like. inspiring other ppl to engage w things im insane abt hudofajsdfdassfsad. anyways. i will probably expand that list bc i literally forgot every single thing i ever read. also i havent watched that many movies so far

ancient times: i havent really watched a lot of movies/series set in ancient times so far :(

rome HBO (2005-2007) (tv series) - OF COURSE. i personally think its one of the best series ever made. they combine political, miliatry history with the lives of every day people in an incredible way. they never let you once engage with the series through modern lenses. according to my teacher (a historian, archeologist & self described 'romaphile') its incredibly historically accurate, mostly the clothing, set designs, characterization, military practices, etc. except for the things they straight up made up, of course.

i really enjoyed gladiator (2000), i think its a masterpiece.

prince of egypt (1998) i guess?

all the asterix movies of course, all the animated ones and most of the live actions. but i wouldnt really call it historical fiction

ok i havent actually finished watching it for now but sebastiane (1976) - an erotic, x rated, gay interpretation of the martyrdom of st sebastian. its in latin also.

wait i cant believe i forgor about assassin's creed odyssey - so far the only one ive played. its so fun and incredibly immersive visually. especially pour moi who cries into the pillow about how ill never experience the ancient world. also you can b a faggot which is always fun. i have things to say about their portrayal of same-sex sexuality and slavery in classical greece but i get why they did that considering its supposed to like. appeal to a lot of people, and a more "historically accurate" portrayal (for example of pederasty or how common slavery was etc.) would b v difficult for a lot of their target audience. alas.

medieval and early modern era:

the name of the rose (1986) - my medieval history teacher literally showed us bits of this movie to teach us about monasteries and monks fhdosiasdjasd.

the borgias (2011-2013) - incredibly messy, lots of political intrigue, and so so fun to watch. about the history of the borgia family. filled to the brim with drama.

the three musketeers (1993) - my favorite adaptation, also coincidentally the one i grew up on. casting tim curry as richelieu was genius. he slays so hard.

i also like bbc's the musketeers (2014-2016) - a neat little series. very fun and entertaining to watch.

outlaw king (2018) - like i dont think most ppl heard of this movie. its about robert the bruce's fight to reclaim the throne of scotland. starring chris pine

vikings (2013-2020) - its fun. i havent watched the entire series tho. dont expect anything resembling historical accuracy

the northman (2022) - you will see something resembling historical accuracy

mihai viteazul (michael the brave) (1971) - a fun movie. very much romanian propaganda tho.

1670 (2023-) - such a fun series!!! incredible cast, shows respect to the actual history and the lives of historical people. really cute and funny.

caravaggio (1986) - a biopic about caravaggio.

wait i also forgor about pentiment - an intriguing, immersive, and incredibly beautiful video game! it has a lot of 'the name of the rose' vibes, with it being a medieval murder mystery taking place in a monastery. its incredibly touching and made me cry, and in the last few years i very rarely cry. also im 99% sure its an indie game? go support the creators!

vaguely-medieval/early modern fantasy:

mirror mirror (2012) - a retelling of snow white. a very fun movie imo, with incredible costume design. julia roberts plays the evil queen and she SLAYS. armie hammer is unfortunately in that movie.

stardust (2007) - one of my fave movies growing up. more modern-inspired but still.

the green knight (2021) - controversial i know but i actually loved this movie! i liked it both as a standalone movie but moreso as a 21st century adaptation to sir gawain and the green knight.

galavant (2015-2016) - !!!!!!! one of the most series ever! they manage to tackle such difficult concepts and conversations with a hilarious wit. so fun to watch. i listen to a lot of the songs still, and rewatch every once in a while.

disenchantment (2018-2023) - very fun to watch, especially the first season.

i also really liked the novel uprooted by naomi novik. its a polish-inspired fantasy.

modern era:

killers of the flower moon (2023) - of course. a masterpiece

aferim! (2015) - a romanian movie set in 19th century wallachia, about two officers, a father and son, who were sent by a nobleman to retrieve an escaped enslaved romani man. a lot of the people in the comments were calling the movie humorous and funny, maybe im missing smth (as im watching with subtitles n dont understand the original language) but it was a very difficult watch for me??

the handmaiden (2016) - need i say more

black sails (2014-2017) - a prequel to the famous novel 'treasure island'. not an easy series to watch. incredibly good.

the favourite (2018) - need i say more pt 2

the rabbi's cat (le chat du rabbin) (2011) - animated movie set in early 20th century algeria. a rabbi's cat learns to talk overnight.

the nice guys (2016) - a fun murder mystery set in the 1970s

o brother, where art thou (2000) - a retelling of the odyssey set in the southern us in the 1930s

victor/victoria (1982) - set in early 20th century paris. julie andrews pretends to be a man and takes on a job as a drag queen. extremely fun, extremely gay movie.

lady chatterley's lover (2022) - very much porn for moms but it was a nice watch imo

amulet (2020) - set in like. idk. sometime in the 20th century. this is a horror movie, deals a lot with misogyny, sa, and so on. i really like it, personally. a lot of people, mostly weird men, dont tho.

the great (2020-2023) - i have mixed feelings about this show. on the one hand, its really fun to watch. on the other hand, its basically ofmd for girls who have public mental breakdowns whenever someone claims corsets were oppressive. and theyre so weird about russians, jesus christ.

disses:

domina (2021-) - i just couldnt get into it, esp since i tried right after finishing rome hbo. it was kind of silly, and not in a good way. takes itself wayyyy to seriously.

i didnt like spartacus (2010-2013) - the dialogue was almost grotesque and the editing, especially the transitions, straight up killed me

damsel (2024) - holy fuck what a trainwreck of a movie. absolute waste of angela basset and robin wright. the only good thing were the costumes.

lancelot du lac (1974) - i just didnt like it at all. couldnt get into it. i guess it was way too french and artsy fartsy for me. a movie that was trying to say both too little and too much at the same time.

i didnt rly like bram stoker's dracula (1992) - i mean. it was a fine movie. it was definitely not the godfather. the movie itself was meh. the visuals tho? absolutely stunning

Satan & Violins

I share a lot of similarities with Satan, even when before they canonized something about him; one of them being violinist!Satan😭 In spite of me having a mini identity crisis following the drop of his canon violinist card, i think it makes sense! heres why.

Disclaimer!

1. I have not picked up an instrument in years

2. This is purely bcuz my brain is so busy thinking abt Satan so its kinda rambly. . Pls bare w me T_T

The violin and its family, unlike other string instruments (ex. the guitar), doesnt have these little things (that i forgor the name of because im a bad musician) that separates every note. those little separating thingies are the reason why people who dont know shit about playing a key on guitar but memorize musical scales (me) is at least able to strum a simple one octave melody.

Obviously, the two come in with their one difficulty (i prefer the violin myself), but it's a little bit harder to pull that trick with the violin. As you can see, theres not exactly something to tell you where each note begins or where they end. Nothing to determine where is where. You simply have to memorize the placement and the distance between each note. You basically play the violin with Your Gut (1). We'll keep this in mind for now.

Moving on, let's talk about body posture.

Beginner violinist usually directlty face towards the strings when playing, as they aren't used to letting their 'gut' lead the show. However, more experienced players would find no need to do so. A quick glance at Satan's art could tell us he was at least above beginner level to be brave enough to face (us) instead.

When you're not facing your violin, you would usually lean your head towards it, resulting in your ear becoming the closest thing to it- here's a real life example:

Now, if there was anything my teacher warned me before starting violin, is that even without having your ear be the closest thing to it, the strings are already LOUD😭 so its even louder when you alr have ur ear on it. The violin is considered one of the most emotional instruments ever, their lower sound resemble what we use to express sadness in speech. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, you as a player are forced to feel what you're playing. Thus is also why you play the violin with Your Heart (2).

So, how does this tie into Satan? It's no secret that our handsome man is incredibly romantic, and to me if he ever wants to express something to us and making sure the message is clearly received, the equally emotional violin is his best bet! The violin allows Satan to play heartwrenching notes that would quickly be felt by the listener.

Lets get technical.

There's still another side of the violin, as there is another side to Satan. The way you stroke your bow matters, the way you angle it so you'll only hit the notes you want. (thankfully if you mess up, the violin is made to still sound graceful😂). Satan too, is quite the detail oriented person. He is tactical, analytical, observant, a man obsessed with striving to be the perfect one, etc etc. The need of preciseness of the violin is definitely right up his alley. The way you need everything to be correct to be rewarded for a beautiful sound. Idk exactly where I'm going with this but it's basically intelligence meets emotion kinda thing, do you see it too?!?!

In conclusion, the violin is a wonderful instrument that both requires great attention to detail yet is also incredibly emotional and heartfelt, an instrument that requires your gut and heart guide your play without abandoning technique. Satan, the incredibly smart yet fluffy softie, is quite literally made for this and I LOVE HIM for that RAAAAAAHHHH. im normal.

more duke things bcs I'm so normal abt Him I promise

duke was in the foster system for years while not being able to mourn his parents, knowing that they were missing while only being able to search for them to the best of his ability, often being moved from home to home bcs of how often he got into fights and being mistreated or abused in some of the homes he was sent to

what I'm saying is, duke probably kept to himself because he was moved around so often that it made keeping relationships hard, in batman and the signal he straight up says that he doubts that his situation will last already putting up a wall between the rest of the family and him

eventually when he does settle in or at least get comfortable with the rest of the bats he stops being rigid and is able to be himself for the first time in a while, this is his first stable living situation since his old apartment and a small part if him is sure he's gnna fuck it up like his previous foster homes

when he first arrived he was awkward and cold, so when he started getting comfortable and everyone was exposed to his blinding smile and cuddly habits

as for relationships w the other bat kids, cass and duke like to tell ppl they are twins for the fun of it, they know nobody believes them but no one's been brave enough to question it either

Jason is dukes lame big brother who wants to look cool so bad but duke is so so dedicated to never letting Jason find out that he finds him incredibly cool and also lame, Jason will do the wildest shit for dukes attention and then ask what duke thinks and he'll go "eh it was aight"

duke and dick don't interact a lot but whenever they do dick is trying to banish all of duke's insecurities like it's his fucking career, they cannot go a single conversation without dick praising duke and duke preening and shit

tim is so awkward w duke at first he has no idea how to interact w him at all. instead of just talking to him like a normal person he'll just leave gifts in duke's room that say shit like 'I heard you wanted this shirt so here you go' only they didn't have a conversation at all and the shirt was in duke's online shopping cart - its so weird but it's growing on duke, he won't say no to free stuff

steph and duke are not allowed to be alone together anymore because last time they were there was a category 4 incident with the riddler and it was just hell for everyone involved esp nygma, bcs they were having the time of their lives

one of the many reasons duke is able to get away w sm is bcs babs has a soft spot for him and will cover his ass without hesitation, if some wild stuff went down on dukes patrol there will be no evidence bcs oracle wiped anything that even mildly incriminates duke from existence, they get lunch on weekends

okay so the crew members who currently have information are orange, black, lime, white, coral, and pink

lime is this really upbeat and cheerful crewmate, they're super friendly and their favorite pass time is making little buttons and pins to decorate their suit and give to their crewmates. the members-dropping-like-flies thing greatly stresses them out and makes them really antsy so they spend a whole lot of time in crowded areas to feel better, the crew members they consider their bestest friends are orange, black, coral, yellow, and blue. they are always one of the first ones to greet new members and despite being deeply upset about the deaths have not been spotted outwardly expressing it once, they always keep up a positive face when around their crew members repress anything other than positivity as hard as they can since they believe it won't help the situation. they're a bit of a bean pole (like 5'10) and very huggy. they're also one of the ones who likes to decorate orange's helmet with stickers for fun <3

black (who also likes to be called teddy) is one of three impostors, and is a big [6'4"] shy dude who gets really easily attached to his fellow crewmembers and falls in love with them Super quickly, resulting in him following them around like a puppy and protecting them from the others. he can be described as very soft hearted and nervous, he has an anxious stutter and is Incredibly Bad with words, often resulting in whoever he's currently pairing up the most with having to talk for him/defend him in meetings. the issue comes in when he finally gets it in him to tell his partner that he loves them, in which if they reject them he will become Furious and murder them in a blind rage . he then tends to dump the body in the trash and spend an hour or so bawling about it after. he's a big soft teddy bear please trust him i swear it's fine

orange is a guy who Was human probably at least once. we think. anyway his body is infected with a plant-like parasite that destroyed his brain and tanked his motor skills and intelligence Massively, he is still technically sentient and can think for himself but functions at a pretty much zombie-like level. his body is stuck inside the suit and basically rotting (his hands, the only part of skin visible because he can't wear gloves due to claws that might just be sharpened bone sprouting from his fingertips, are greying really badly. and he smells like death 24/7.) despite all this, he is completely docile. he has made no attempts to hurt the rest of the crew in any way and in fact INSISTS he is 100% human and even gets distressed and sad when someone says he isnt. since he doesn't bother anybody he is allowed to stay aboard and the more friendly/brave crewmates like to decorate his cracked visor with stickers. it's unknown how his parasite spreads so no one is allowed to touch the plants on him. he is also massive [6'7"] but it's unknown how much of that is due to whatever he has goin on

white is. a fuckin cockass he sucks so hard forever. he's not an impostor but behaves incredibly sus and is greatly disliked by the rest of the crew, the only reason he had avoided being voted off thus far is because he always has a solid alibi (he's known for forcing other crewmates to pair up with him to ensure this). he's Super full of himself and thinks he is above the rest of the crew, willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus for any reason. he is also known for going out of his way to cause problems within the crew just to make things more interesting to himself. think similar to fuckin. byakuya frm dangan. also he has two amogus babies who he named Child 1 and Child 2 and when in the presence of other crewmates he appears super neglectful to them but is real doting and caring in private. Child 1 is really curious and friendly and Child 2 is really shy and anxious. the main reason he neglects them around others is because he automatically assumes other crewmates will just. take care of them for him. [coral does usually]

coral is a really sweet single mother aboard with her one son who she's named peach (her fav fruit <3 also he taped a plant to the top of her helmet bc it makes her look like a peach and she's just never taken it off), she's sort of the resident doctor and tends to the other crewmembers in any way they need her to. she is also the main one when it comes to investigating murders aboard the ship as she is determined to keep the place safe for peach. she and yellow have kind of a gay thing going on <3

pink is another impostor, who is an alien taking the shape of a crewmate that was originally just here to observe and learn about humans and their behaviors. however, after once witnessing black killing a crewmate, she kinda went :AYO: and decided that looked far more fun, and has spent her time since perfecting her skills in taking out the rest of the crew. she is a bit of a cocky bastard and likes watching the others try and figure out who the culprit is. also she's technically genderless, when she was brought aboard the ship the crewmate who was greeting her was a lady and was like btw what's ur pronouns? :-) and she was kinda like . um . what's urs and when the other was like oh mine are she/her she kinda just went Those Ones. Me Also

i am very fond of the vang0 bang0 trans headcanon but u know what’s funnier??

him waking up in a warehouse and not remembering anything. except there are 2 big ass scars on his torso. and since he forgot abt pretty much the whole world, he also forgot about the concept of trans ppl (and like, gender in general, but this would be a complicated concept to really comprehend as fully socialized individuals bc gender is a very big part of society and we can’t just imagine living without the norms it created, ANYWAY). so he just thinks, 'yo, i got wounded pretty bad in the past lol'

and he learns how to live in society again and thinks he’s just like any other man. which he kinda is. he tells everyone he’s kind of a warrior bc of his scars and even though everyone knows they’re top surgery scars, they think he’s joking and never actually tell him off.

when he tries to find his past, he only finds traces of a woman who looks a lot like him. so he thinks it’s his twin sister, and when he tries to look for her, she hasn’t given any signs of life since a few years before he woke up in a warehouse. then, his theory is that she died in a fight with a gang or some sort of criminal organization, and that he got those scars by trying to defend her. it made him a bit sad, but he was glad his past self was brave enough to try and fight. he wished he was that brave now.

but everything stops when someone in the streets seems to recognize him and calls him by his deceased sister’s name. vang0 is about to ask them about her, and everything that has happened before the warehouse, but burger shoves a fist in their face before he can try. dapper is incredibly angry too, and it takes vang0 a few rounds of vehement insults before he starts to understand. he didn’t get the scars from a fight, at least not a physical one. and he never had a twin sister.

when he asks burger and dapper about it, they say they thought he knew he was trans and that asking him about it would be disrespectful.

Ok ill read more my thots as a courtesy

But God okay I already saw shit abt the copaganda + its kind of obvious given Miles' dad and the conventions of the superhero genre in general but yeah it was a lot I'm honestly sick to death of Gwen and her stupid ugly cop dad and those too took up wayyyy too much screen time in a movie that is supposed to belong to Miles. Using rest in power in reference to a cop was incredibly disrespectful and honestly everything at the end regarding the almost Comically Horrible universe with no Spiderman where the whole city was literally on fire after the whole movie kept intentionally drawing parallels between the Spider people and cops just absolutely reeked of thin blue line shit like honestly it kind of pissed me off. Very brave of them by the way to completely straight up cut the movie off at a cliffhanger with absolutely no resolution or even like. A Breather. Just BAM and it's over wait for the next one. I hear someone else in the theatre go "ARE U KIDDING ME?" when the credits started 😭😭😭 I really didn't think it was going to end that abruptly it kind of sucks.

But ultimately obviously the movie is more of an animation showcase than anything and holy shit that was honestly the most stunning piece of visual art I have ever experienced it was just GORGEOUSSS all the way thru I can't get over it. The bright and flashing lights were definitely overkill especially at the very beginning? Like I don't see the reason for it to be that abrasive and without even having any particular photosensitivity I still had a headache throughout basically the entire film 😭. BUT OH MY FUCKING GODDDD HOBIE WAS SO COOOOL I knew he was going to be and I was more excited for him than basically anyone else but it's CRAZY.... So hard not to just stare at him basically the entire time he's on screen and also couldn't help but notice him serving cunt in the background on the regular. Runway model indeed. No really tho I'm obsessed. Honestly did not catch what the fuck he was saying half the time but it's fine cause he's the baddest bitch on the block regardless

Rachel 🤝 Jason

I really like pitting these two against each other and comparing them like specimens in a glass jar because I remember someone said on here that a lot of Rachel’s character is built on her being... well, herself, Rachel King! In other words, a goddamn queen! Clarice even calls her ‘’your majesty” albeit sarcastically. She's strict, she's brave, she's good at her fucking job and that’s an undeniable fact. She keeps things to herself but gets shit done. Everyone knows who she is. Rachel who said “Do you think it bothers me what people call me (queen bitch)? I wear that shit like a badge of fucking honour!”

Bear with me cuz this is a glorified Jason appreciation post. But they also pointed out that Jason’s character, while overshadowed a lot by his ridiculous patriotism and funny accent, he is almost if not just as intelligent and pragmatic as Rachel is. I’m pretty sure he’s the only one in game that acknowledges that Rachel is highly skilled aside from Eric, her husband, so go figure. Merwin’s sexist, Joey died too early, Nick was pretty stupid about being into her, and that was it

And someone mentioned this once in another Tumblr post abt his character analysis (but I cannot for the life of me find it), Jason was at rock bottom and worked incredibly hard to get to his position as a first lieutenant (even with fuzzy intentions), which iirc, he got promoted quicker than most people would have

For such a high rank, he undoubtedly worked his ass off. During the cutscene at the end of the game with the agents in hazmat suits, they remark how Jason was the “best of the best” as a squad leader. I’ve seen lots of people who wonder just how it took Jason to get promoted so fast, w/ such an apparently great reputation? Well.. the answer is that he’s basically a copy of Rachel lol and I mean that in the most endearing way possible

Both of them are emotionally distant, practical, good in a pinch, among other things that just liken them to each other a lot. Ok... maybe they wouldn’t be the BEST of friends... I don’t know how good their friendship would be seeing as they both take their jobs deathly seriously, but hey, you always get on well with someone who’s just like you, right???

II. Alois is a lot smarter than most people consider him to be

Part 1

I don’t see it often now (bc everyone forgot abt Kuro 2 lol) but back in the day, there were a lot of Alois haters and a repeating theme in their explanations was that he was “too stupid to be an earl”. Aside from the classism which I’ll detalize later, this statement is obviously not true. He’s extremely street smart at the very least. At a young age he learns how to survive himself and keep his brother alive, and he almost succeeds in that (the contract between Hannah and Luka wasn’t something he could control). We see him next at age 11-12 which means that he spent several years on the streets living alone. Judging from his demeanor when he just arrived at the Trancy mansion (apathetic, closed off, and cold), he lived all those years in physical survival mode. Fearing for your life constantly causes a person to disregard their existing emotional trauma but it still festers in the subconscious.

The “too stupid to be an earl” argument also loses its relevancy when considering how Alois managed to go from being a captive of the old earl that the latter despised from the start to getting deemed that man’s long lost son. Back in the 2010s some people in the fandom were calling Alois a whore because he apparently “smiled while being presented to the earl, meaning he enjoyed it”. Thankfully this isn’t a point of view I encountered often because besides the blatant pedophilia (keep in mind that he was 11-12 at the time), the time Alois spent as the old earl’s captive was an incredibly mentally deteriorating experience. He saw a chance to get out of poverty and escape potential death and took it, despite the taxing cost. It wasn’t like he went willingly, it was just the most logical (and honestly brave) thing to do given the circumstances.

Now, how this influenced him in his later years. Child survivors of sexual abuse may exhibit the following trauma reactions:

Angry outbursts

Anxiety

Depression

Not wanting to be left alone with a particular individual(s)

Sexual knowledge, language, and/or behaviors that are inappropriate for the child’s age

The first four are pretty self-explanatory but I want to analyze the last one in a bit more detail. Over the course of the entire second season we see Alois display behavior that can be considered as inappropriate, especially for a 14-year old earl in Victorian England. Everything – from his outfits to his behavior towards those around him is often seen as comic relief and yet another reason to slutshame this kid. I find it peculiar that Alois commences these actions whenever he’s actively pursuing a goal, like with getting Arnold Trancy to stop suspecting him, making Ciel leave the costume party unexpectedly, many occasions of this with Claude, etc. He's doing this mechanically: acting like that is how he escaped poverty, how he managed to persuade the old earl to give him a noble status, and I’m assuming it influences those around him because they’re so stunned by the unconventionality of it. I don’t think Alois was ever taught about how society standartly views sex and sexual behavior so his perception of it is formed solely by his trauma.

That brings me to another point which I’ll also elaborate in the classism chapter of this literal manifesto. For the duration of the season Alois was often referred to as “dirty” on several instances by those around him, from Sebatian and Ciel to random people. This point isn’t really an analysis thing in this chapter, we don’t see how this affects Alois on a deep level besides getting (rightfully) offended. I just thought it was kind of fucked up to insult a child who went through severe abuse, including sexual, and have that abuse define him in society. The old earl should be the brunt of society’s critique, not his traumatized victim.

Alois’s relationship with Claude, from a psychological standpoint, isn’t really that complicated. Here’s what an article by a therapy clinic says about how childhood abandonment trauma manifests in survivors later in life:

“Abandonment trauma leads to unhealthy relationships because the trauma survivor might become dependent on the other person for validation and love. As such, they will fear rejection or abandonment. The person suffering might not know why they are clinging to their partner, especially when the relationship is unhealthy or abusive.”

Claude saved him from the old earl and played a crucial role in creating Alois as a noble. His mind associates Claude with the freedom he received. The demon was the first being to approach Alois with no intention of harming him (not without a carrot before the stick, at least), and love-starved Alois saw him as salvation and a cure for all of his pain. If Claude made an effort to actually help his master psychologically, then maybe the entire story wouldn't be so grim, but Claude’s specific goal was the opposite. He deliberately destabilized Alois’s mental state so that “his soul would taste better”. Of course, Claude never hid what his intentions were, but from an ethical standpoint, it wasn’t a morally correct approach.

Alois knew all this, and I think he even accepted it, despite not wanting to. He gives off the impression of someone who’s aware of many things, but doesn’t show that outwardly. A compelling part of his character is that while he’s generally easygoing and sociable, and sometimes overshares to those around him, a lot of his deep feelings remain inside his head only, either because he isn’t aware of them consciously himself, or because he just doesn’t vocalize what he truly believes in (like the “they’re all just damn demons” sentiment he has about his servants on a few occasions, or the butterfly monologue in the OVA).

In terms of Jungian typology, he absolutely exhibits the traits of someone who uses extroverted sensing. You can read about the characteristic traits of it here, but I want to point out that individuals who use this cognitive function have a very “grounding” vibe in the sense that they live in the present and tend to tackle problems as soon as they arise, without mulling over them beforehand. This makes them very adaptive and easygoing people. IMO, the best example of this function in Alois is the beginning of his duel with Ciel. The latter puts all of his teenage noble pride into the entire duration of the duel. Ciel is giving it his all but with a stick-up-the-ass atmosphere to it. Alois, on the other hand, despite never having dueled before, just goes along with it casually, and manages to considerably hold his own before spiraling (remember the emotional hijacking thing? yeah…)

Alois seems like a very curious child. People who use extroverted sensing are often called “explorers” because they want to experience so much of the world. This definitely manifests in Alois: he expresses a wish to travel the world when talking with Sebastian disguised as a traveler, then shows interest when the man tells him about a mystery in the Trancy mansion. The duel with Ciel is also a good example of this, since Alois literally just improvised a challenging task that he was never taught how to do.

Another point of Alois’s intelligence is how he had to “make” himself into a noble within just a few years while those around him were brought up in that environment. We can see that he’s able to read and write, which is extremely impressive considering the fact that he was most likely illiterate until the age of 13. He has super nice handwriting too. Yes, Claude tutored him, but he wouldn’t have been able to grasp information, no matter how well explained, if he wasn’t smart himself. This also goes for learning aristocratic etiquette and other things he would’ve had to know as an earl. That brings me to my next point in his character analysis.

ok some Free Range bnha thoughts. I think I left off around 300 when I paused reading it week to week so I started at 290 to Refresh. obviously, spoilers below the cut , but I'm not saying anything that hasnt been said b4 probably. just My Thoughts. turns out I wasn't like, 80 chapters behind but roughly 30-40, which is. ok so. u wanted more fear street asks? heres another fear street ask!

(beware, in typing this i just realized what started as me trying to get one simple point across led to me rambling but i think this still counts as talking to u abt fear street sooo)

im just once again thinking about how the characters are so fleshed out and engrained in the plot?? like, it would have been fairly easily possible to kinda treat the characters as secondary to the plot and instead focus mainly on the curse w/o really developing them (especially since the movies really dont cover that much time, by which i mean 1994 parts 1 and 2 together are maybe a bit over 2 full days? and 1978 is one day and 1666 is like 2 days, if that makes any sense lol). but the thing is, the only reason the plot matters is the way it affects the characters, and the way the curse has shaped their whole lives and the lives of literally anyone who lives in either shadyside or sunnyvale (tho obv in wildly different ways) and just. despite there technically only being so little time the main characters did all get their own personalities and in most cases also some form of arc and maybe i just get attached too easily but i loved them all dearly. kate, simon and alice are all only present for one of the movies and arent even the main protagonists in it and yet they are all distinct characters and i love them. i am well aware this is a horror franchise but i do think the reason im so incredibly obsessed w these 3 movies is the way they dealt with the characters and their relationships to each other. (which is not to say i dont adore the plot and couldnt ramble abt it forever but the thing is it is v much character driven and also not currently what im sitting here thinking about lmao)

first of all YES to all of that, i LOVED what you said and you're so right!!! let's talk the characters!!! because i'm literally in love with all of them. first, Deena. how could you not love an angry but secretly soft lesbian that would fight the actual devil for her girlfriend? the way she went from "shit is doomed" to "you and me are the way out" we love some character development!

which brings me to Sam! I saw some people say Sam was the most underdeveloped character and yeah i wish we could have gotten to know more about her but ???? if she doesn't have a personality who cares I'll give her one via fanfic??? but seriously though i love Sam so much like did we watch the same movie? that girl sacrificed herself TWICE (three times if you count kissing her gf in front of her homophobic mom, bc hey that's as brave as facing the devil imo).

literally all the secondary characters also had sooo much potential. Josh could literally have a spin off series where he solves mysteries. Simon was comic relief but so. much. more. than that and when Deena said he had been providing for his family since he was 15 i cried. and Kate!! she wanted to live and have a life so badly and every time i think about her i want to cry so badly!

then there's 1978! the Berman sisters! who had their complicated relationship but also very real personal stuff on top of that too! like seriouslly fully fleshed characters all of them!! did you watch the actress that plays Alice say that she played her as having romantic feelings for Cindy, and that the other actress and the director agreed??? i'm still losing my mind about that. don't even get me started on Leigh Janiak because she's so iconic i'm seriously losing my mind

okay this rant was incredibly messy but aahh thanks for sharing your thoughts and enabling me to just yell about these amazing movies!!!

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff — i don’t really get when people ?? say percy would be anything other than a hufflepuff. like yes he’s brave. yes he is a reckless mess. yes he’s ambitious and yes he’s so smart but. bby his fatal flaw is loyalty for a reason? he’s SO hardworking and although i don’t rlly see him as a patient person imo, he’s just ?? absolutely a hufflepuff i don’t care u can’t change my mind

best quality: loyalty — ok i feel like this might not make sense however. i project onto annabeth ok hfjdks and i feel like one of the reasons why her and percy work so well is bc? abandonment issues combined w unconditional loyalty is,,, a perfect combo. and i,, too have abandonment issues and would appreciate? a percy jackson who is so loyal to the point where,, it’s his downfall. pls

worst quality: temper — i know it’s mentioned pre-tartarus that he has a temper, it’s evident throughout the entire series, but i think esp w the events of heroes of olympus that must’ve gotten much worse, like i can imagine him losing his temper so so much and feeling,, awful and guilty over any situations where he did lose his temper?? idk if i’m explaining this right at all however. yes. that boy has a lil bit of a temper and i think that,,, in His opinion he’d probably think it’s his worst quality? like. he’d hate it. and also i’m kinda in love w him and cannot at this moment think of another single thing wrong w him ngl so. yes (also mildly scared of people w bad tempers despite being someone w a bad temper so. yes)
