meanwhile kunimi eats a kitkat like its pizza just CHOMP

makki caNNOT sleep without a pillow between his thighs LIKE LISTEN he has 2 sisters and they all told him its so comfortable and at first he was like,, ??,, then he tried and now cant sleep without it

bUT MATTSUN LIKES TO SLEEP WITH PILLOWS SURROUNDING HIM bc it makes him feel safe and like there are two body pillows on either side of him and hes kinda trapped in the middle aksjskdk

when kyo was younger, he was really short and although he had other pants, he loved this one pair but they were really long on him and he wore it all the time and the part of the pants that touched the ground is torn in shreds

kindaichi steps on the sofa before sitting LIKE puts one foot on the cushion then the other until hes literally standing on the couch before folding to sit with his knees up to his chest (i do this)

watari sniffs his food before eating it no matter if its something he eats all the time or something new, he still sniffs it either way

yahaba is really particular with his feet and he likes to get a really big tupperware (duh one only meant for his feet) and fill it up with warm almost boiling water and he just soaks them

oikawa has sleep paralysis and he oftens hallucinates about aliens in the corner of his room

kunimi does this thing where he makes weird noises with his mouth like sounds of his mouth opening LIKE when youre tastinf something new and you do that sound with your tongue (I DUNNO HOW TO DESCRIBE IT AJDKSKKD)

makki bends his knees just to crack his ankles

iwa sneezes a ton but he has those sneezes where theyre quiet that you dont even notice or really loudly that it just echoes throughout the gym

kyo sleeps with one sock on bc his feet gets cold easily but both socks make him feel really hot so only one sock is perfect

for a tall and hunk of a guy, mattsun is a very light walker like his footsteps are very light and if he wants to, it can be practically silent

watari actually hates vegetables ajssksksk he particularly hates zucchini, eggplants, any vegetables that are that shape

kindaichi likes to stick or lean against walls because to him, they feel cold and can decrease his body heat

oikawa stands and places his feet at V position like \/ instead of ll because his sister did ballet and he was taught that was the right way of standing and it was considered graceful

yahaba has a fear of cactuses

mattsun does so badly in the heat because his body temp runs so high and the hot surroundings make him feel so uncomfortable and so he takes a lot of cold showers

iwa cannot swim like he freaks out immediately when his toetips can no longer feel the bottom and he panics with thoughts of drowning

watari has really small feet that he still buys big kids shoes to save money

kyotani considered playing baseball because he thought baseball bats were cool but he got angry and threw tantrum after missing his first pitch

iwa chomps on a whole raw chili while eating ramen akskksks

oikawa actually hates sweets bc when he was younger, he had cavities and iwa showed him a cartoon of cavities eating his teeth and will make him toothless

kindaichi really really likes hugs but hes too awkward to ask them even from his parents

yahaba chomps on mints so he goes through boxes of them in a week

i feel like theres a boy in the team who doesnt brush their teeth everyday and rubs a towel on their teeth to make it look clean and take mints to hide their bad breath

iwaizumi is actually iron deficient so he bruises super super fast and he even developed iron defiency anemia when he was younger bc his parents didnt catch on which caused him to be put on strong medication for months and still takes it now

WAIT,, OIKAWA IS LACTOSE INTOLERANT BUT HE LIKES MILK SO HE EATS MILK BREAD TO MAKE HIM FEEL NOT SO BAD OR GUILTY OF CONSUMING STRAIGHT DAIRY

seijoh four bonding time is watching gordom ramsey shows and yelling and screaming 'YEA! EXACTLY!' as if theyre also cooking genuises

watari used to eat grapes all the time until his mom got worried and told him if he doesnt stop, he will eventually turn into one. he only eats it every few weeks

when he was younger, kunimi cried because he had befriended a chicken on a trip to a farm and his mom took him to eat fried chicken after and he thought it was Chicky (his chicken friend :"))

kyotani used to stick out his tongue when it was raining so he could taste the raindrops. they taste better than bottled water

one time, during a seijoh sleepover, they dared oikawa to wear his sisters old uniform, skirt and all, and it backfired so everyone turned red and couldnt look at him in the face

their pregame ritual is touching each other's shoe tips

they tried doing yoga at yahaba's house before by watching yoga youtube videos but everyone ended up having to go to the chiropractor after (how did makki even turn into the human pretzel?)

the local gym gets so scared when they see the team coming through the doors bc these men are so LOUD like they HYPE EACH OTHER UP SO MUCH THEYRE SO ANNOYING AKSKSKDK

also never take them to an all you can eat sushi place. if you do, bring them earlier of the day like 30 mins after opening time so the cooks can cook enough for them without running out of ingredients (even then sometimes they still run out)

oikawa used to eat his mom's roses from her garden because he thought it would make his farts smell good like roses

takahiro is a surprisingly good artist like he draws really cool action fighting scenes in the corner of his papers and stuff

in my work: it's canon that iwa is half filo and his nanay used to dress him up in a barong all the time during halloween bc she wanted him to showcase his heritage

yahaba drinks a lot of milk because he hopes to one day grow strong and bulky like the 3rd years instead of being seen as a pretty boy

kindaichi's mom is a hairstylist and she always scolds him for using a lot of gel bc she's always the one who washes his hair

makki never learned how to do taxes and hes had the government knocking on his door a handful of times (BOKUTO AKKDJSKKS)

kyo has a dog: a chiweenie

there's someone on the team who wears those socks with individual pockets for toes

their pinterest is so different from what they look like for example, mattsun has a board of different flower decorations and arrangements

kunimi throws up during intense horror movies

the team alternates from different music genres like from ateez and bts to mxmtoon and beach bunny

they still dont know how to pronounce camila cabello's name

theyre all active in social media but only oikawa is on it 24/7 and in all platforms while the others have insta and snap

mattsun has twins as little siblings and he used to get them mixed up all the time that he used to draw a sharpie dot on the girl's forehead to determine she was his sister

watari hates sitting on the floor bc his butt bone hurts really easily so he can only sit on cushions for long periods of time

the team was supposed to have a party but everyone didnt know what to bring so they proved they shared the same braincell by bringing the same thing: a box of pizza

makki's an old soul and prefers to play records on a record player or watch old movies

kyo is surprisingly good at giving massages because he really pushed hard on those tense muscles

kindaichi knows how to crack necks so everyone goes to him a lot to do it (a friend of mine does this and can i say its terrifying yet so good?)

the only one who has a license is matsukawa and thats because granny needs to go to the doctor a lot and he hates her walking by herself and cabs are expensive

kyotani and yahaba are actually,,, lowkey close,,, not like best friends but theyre nice to each other and they got a stick and poke together (yahaba's was: :) while kyo's was: >:))

watari has a collection of mangas (some bl maybe 👀)

WARNING SAD: mattsun’s future job is a funeral person right? he ends up taking care of granny’s funeral free of charge and he had to take a week off because it was really painful for him

oikawa learned spanish SUPER fast to the point he forgets japanese sometimes but there are moments where he forgets both languages and hes just,,,, ???

makki’s unemployed yea but he rooms with mattsun in exchange of cooking because makki’s surprisingly good at cooking

iwa is practically the nutritionist of the team because he knows everything about proteins, carbs, iron, and needed vitamins so they all go to him to know what to eat and what they need

kunimi has lots and lots of shoes but usually only wears 2

kindaichi has a habit of pretending hes chewing gum even though he doesnt have gum, his mouth just chomps and moves with air akasldfjkf

there was a clown phenomenon in america but in their city, they had a mascots and seijoh 4 went around scaring kids :”(

kyotani can easily sleep anywhere like he would be standing and just fall asleep or he sleeps with his eyes open

yahaba’s parents own a restaurant somewhere in the city and he works there sometimes

i should have never opened the mrs. wood floodgates cause now i have a million questions. did he ever bring her his report cards? did she put them on the fridge with otto’s? i bet she did. when did she start to notice that things at awsten’s house were really bad? did she ever confront awsten’s mom? did otto ever get jealous when they were real little cause he didn’t understand why his mom paid so much attention to awsten? did awsten ever do anything for her for mother’s day? he is gonna now?

this is a mess and it’s so long and so CHEESY im sorry

he did well in history and science when he was younger. not english or math or spelling, but he liked history and science. on the day they brought report cards home, he’d tear off the bad parts and throw them away (i think about him tearing up school stuff a lot tbh). but he’d keep the good parts, so she could only see the parts that he wanted her to.

when otto wasn’t there (in the bathroom, changing clothes, whatever), awsten would shyly bring the scraps to her, and she’d make a big deal about it, giving him a hug and a big kiss and telling him how proud of him she was and what a great job he’d done. he’d put the pieces back in his pocket because he knew otto always did better than he did, but sometimes he would do well on a test, and that would get put up on the fridge (cough, like in MIA, cough).

she could tell right away, but she grew desensitized to it. i think we’d all be guilty of this to some degree - after several months, you get used to a kid wearing the same clothes two days in a row or never having shoes that fit right. and awsten wasn’t acting like anything was wrong because he was five years old and he’d never known anything different.

she knew just from otto talking about awsten that he came from a house that was different than hers. but she was thinking maybe he was living with an underprivileged family. so when she was alone with awsten, she’d start slipping little questions in here and there to try to learn more, and his answers were weird. she figured out that he was alone most of the time, that he was always hungry and in trouble at school, and that he’d have a lot of headaches and a glaring lack of baths, clothes, and sleep. she discovered that this wasn’t neglect but full-on abuse when she coaxed him into a warm bath when he was in first grade and he had five finger-shaped bruises on each of his arms.

she couldn’t ever find awsten’s mom to confront her. if she managed to get a hold of her on the phone, awsten’s mom would just swear at her and then hang up. and then things would be worse for awsten. so she stayed quiet but reported what she could to the police, but nothing was ever really done.

well, she was pretty subtle. a little went a long way with awsten, so it didn’t seem like much to otto when mom would spend a few extra seconds buckling awsten into a car seat so she could touch his cheek and smile at him - because she did the same for otto.

when otto got a little older (first grade), he thought it was weird because not only did other parents not do that, but mom didn’t do it for any of otto’s other friends. he asked about it one night after awsten went home, and she explained carefully to him that while awsten had people to take care of him, they didn’t always do a very good job. so she was trying to make sure he knew that he was cared about.

otto takes after his mom in a lot of ways, but that big heart is the most obvious. he had always loved awsten a whole lot, but he was sure after that to make it a little more obvious.

when the kids were required to make mother’s day cards at school, awsten would act out. he was so little that he didn’t know why he was mad, but he was still mad. he’d tear the pages up then, too, or draw things that would freak the teachers out, like skulls and fire and angry faces. he’d get sent to the counselor’s office, where he’d lie and say he didn’t know why he did it, and it was okay because he’d get a piece of candy on the way out.

in third grade, though, he cooperated and just made a card so the teachers wouldn’t send him to the counselor again. people had started to ask more questions by then, and he’d figured out that it was better to lie and hide everything than it was to cause a scene and draw attention to himself.

he decorated a plain white piece of paper with a drawing of a green and yellow horse. inside it just said a generic, “happy mother’s day. i love you. awsten” and he fully intended to stuff it inside his backpack and then crumple it up and throw it away on the walk home, because on the off chance that his mom was home, he’d never give it to her. she’d be mean about it, and then he’d be sad, so she’d get angry, and then he’d get hurt. he just wanted to get rid of it. it’d be better for everyone.

but then he saw mrs. wood picking up otto, and he thought maybe she’d like it. maybe she’d hug him and say something nice about his horse. after all, he’d spent a long time getting the zig-zags on it just right…

so he went to the woods’ house after school and knocked on the door, and she answered and told him otto was working on homework. and he said something like, that’s okay. i just wanted to give you this. and he was so embarrassed that he couldn’t even look at her, but he held the card out, and she took it, and she read it and crouched down and she was willing herself so firmly not to cry and she thanked him profusely and told him how much she loved it and what a beautiful horse you drew for me, baby, thank you.

and he didn’t know why, but he just stood on the doorstep - head hung, shoulders drooping, big backpack still on his back - and started to cry. he didn’t get it, why he hated this damn holiday so much, but she did. she knew. and she cried too, just a little, and she reached her arms out for him, and he went into them, and she folded him up all safe and warm and, right there outside, she told him how much she loved him and that she knew things were hard at home but she would always, always be there for him if he needed anything.

he asked her why she was crying, and she said because he was sad and that made her sad, too. and he asked why that made her sad. and she said because she loved him. and they were just on the front step, the two of them, hugging each other tightly.

awsten felt like he was too old, like he shouldn’t be needing anyone, especially since his parents always made him do everything for himself. but it just felt so nice… so when she asked him to come inside and stay for dinner, he nodded instead of disappearing like he usually did.

he sat at the counter and watched her while she moved around the kitchen making him a snack, humming along to her crackly little radio. and sitting there, safe, in the clean house with the nice family, he was so angry and so sad and so thankful and so confused and frustrated and happy and heartbroken that he started to cry a second time. and she went over to him and held him again, cheese and crackers forgotten several feet away.

I’ve been thinking about how I will allow my children to be more independent in their decision making. Since they were small, we have allowed quite a bit of freedom. Letting them jump in the puddles and then dealing with cold, wet feet has always been the best way for them to learn not to jump in puddles with tennis-shoes on. My sweet husband calls this method the “experiential” manner of parenting. I’m not sure if that’s actually a thing, but while he teases me with it from time to time, I think it is the best way to describe my overall philosophy for life. How will we learn if we do not experience?

Still, my ten-year-old is getting to a point in life where learning through doing can cost her more than just wet feet. I wonder how to provide all of the right activities for her to live her bigger-girl life without overly harsh consequences? Too much freedom given in the teen years can lead to all sorts of unchangeable life situations, choices that will need to be lived through for years to come, not just an afternoon. Yet I know that this child learns best by living, by putting her truest self out there and trying it out in the real world. I have no answers for these questions this morning, we will walk along this path together, hopefully the puddles won’t be too deep for awhile yet and we figure out the necessary boundaries as we go.

I also have been watching my littler kids, my husband and I give them a lot of space to learn by trying things out, but these two youngest kids are around a lot of other peoples parents, how do I let them think for themselves when so many other mommas don’t give their own kids the freedoms we allow? How do I respect other parents’ boundaries, while still letting my kids respect their own? I know that I need to be more vocal, explaining to my mom-friends the “why” behind the seemingly crazy things I “permit” my children to choose. I forget that our way is what has worked best for our family and, while I don’t need to force it on anyone else, I do need to respect it even in situations where other kids might not be allowed to do the things my kids choose to do.

If I don’t respect the guidelines that I show my kids one on one when we are in a group situation, it sends a mixed message and my kid may start to question her body or brain. That is something that will come back to bite me when we are climbing or on an unfamiliar trail and they suddenly question themselves in a moment of fear. I know that by letting them climb out as far as they feel safe, by letting them jump off the highest wall they are comfortable on, by simply allowing them to choose to wear a coat or not, they are learning that their choices matter. More than that they are learning that they have power over their own choice. They also see that they are capable, sometimes they fall, sometimes they flail, sometimes they come down a step first, but because we are there to bandage the scrapes and encourage the efforts, they trust themselves.

I suppose that is how I’m hoping to make it through the teen years with grace this time. We have allowed, permitted, encouraged even, this child to listen to her body. To trust her gut, to choose what is best for her through all of her “little” years. Unconsciously, by supporting her in these small things we have encouraged her to do the same with the big things to come. Hopefully she has failed enough and dealt with unpleasant consequences enough times to have those lessons to draw from as she matures. Ideally, she will have so much faith in her own body and brain that she will not fall to pressures or fail to be true to herself.

And so we continue. This day I will allow my eight-year-old to wear shorts…in January…in Minnesota…because that is his choice and he has yet to regret it, though I can’t look at him some days without shivering. I will watch my tiny stomp out into the snow wearing dress shoes and be there holding the boots I suggested before we left the house if she chooses to admit that snow is cold when it melts into your shoes! (I know that she will not admit that, she is as stubborn as I am and she will deal with wet feet for as long as she is able, but next time? She’ll choose the boots from the start because she’ll remember.) I will explain myself better to the other moms that we interact with so that I don’t have kids who second guess themselves.

This is not always easy. I often try very hard to explain my “why” to my kids when I want them to do one thing and they are certain that their own way is best. It is hard to remember that cold fingers will not kill an otherwise healthy child when my own life experiences tell me to put on mittens. It is difficult to stop and see their independence growing when the way they want to be independent causes me to need to plan ahead more. I mean, you really can’t let kids be free to explore their world without remembering to pack a spare pair of clothes and a towel or two. I’m banking on this being best though, that as they grow up they will know themselves and have a wealth of their own experiences to draw from. Not just scary words that grown ups threatened them with.

While my confidence often lags behind what I know to be true in this area, I have decided to commit to advocating for them more vocally. If your family plans to meet up with mine on one of these mild winter days please be prepared. I will not be telling my kids they can’t eat snow because they’ll get too cold, that they can’t take their coat…and hoodie…and snow-pants off (insert eye-roll here). Because I trust that when they are cold they will put them back on. I will continue to let my kids climb the trees, stand on the ledges, and jump from the rocks. Whether we are with friends or not. Because I really, really do want them to hear their own inner voice whisper and they won’t be able to do that if I’m constantly screaming at them to “not”.

Join me won’t you? It takes only a few steps. Choose a day and pack the car with all of the things you might need, take the extra time to do this. Then let your kid choose. Shorts in winter? Sure, if you want (you can pack pants). Take a few steps out onto the thin ice at the bend in the creek? Yes (you can explain currents and how far is safe, you can have spare boots and socks in the backpack). Climb on the frozen, metal playground equipment? Yep. (Maybe put dry mittens on first though?) Life should be experienced friends, even at four-years-old.
