I absolutely loved the article. I loved the authors writing style and I feel like he stayed true to what Austin had in mind for the interview. He didn’t pry or nudge which doesn’t come often in interviews with celebrities, so I’m glad he was able to respect his boundaries. I just wanna point out a couple things. The fact that all he responds to a dating question (from 2 months ago) is just “I’m happy” doesn’t say much. The way he talked about Vanessa when asked about her vs Kaia is astronomically different, like if you put two clips, one of Austin getting asked about V vs one with K, to someone who doesn’t know any of them, I guarantee that person would think he was talking about K like he was forced to be around her. And this isn’t necessarily about being private. You can still be private without giving your relationship away. Vanessa rarely posted a pic with him and they were all over each other in pap pics. He called her his rock in interviews. Austin and Kaia haven’t shown each other affection in front of pap cameras pretty much ever. Only ever on the red carpet, y’know where hundreds of cameras are pointed at you to capture every little thing you do. And it’s always so crazily awkward and forced. Saying “I’m happy” is nothing compared to saying “she’s my rock”. Also the fact that he didn’t even know how old the dog is that is supposedly “his child” according to the shippers. Have to laugh at that. The interviewer never stated the fact that they live together or not so the shippers have nothing to be delusional about on that part, but you’d think it was common knowledge that you wouldn’t be holding two whole boxers while the entire moving truck has KG on it when you are moving into a new house with your “partner.” The shippers can stay delusional about this relationship. But I also wanna talk about how much that article shows how genuine of a human being Austin is. To not only have 1 or 2 but I think 5 (could’ve counted wrong lol) people that you’ve worked with just in the last 3 years, talk about how brilliant, and kind and gracious and talented he is, that is the Austin we all know and love. He has come so far, from tagging along to his step brother’s acting audition, to being an Oscar nominee/ BAFTA winner. and I couldn’t be more grateful to see him grow as an actor and a person. Sorry for the long rant but I also didn’t wanna send you 9 messages when I thought of something new to say so I waited until I had all my thoughts in order lol.
all of this right here. i mean yeah i literally don't have anything else to add further because this was well said lol. i know others here agree with you as well. he puts respect still on vanessa, shows none to kaia. and we move on to the next thing lol.

i think the fabelmans and top gun will get oscar nominations (voting ended on tuesday anyway, before the baftas), but the bafta (and SAG in top gun’s case) snub(s) make it less likely they can be considered too contenders for best picture. HOWEVER…coda did not get a bafta nomination last year, and well! look what happened. unlike the fabelmans or top gun, coda was an underdog all awards season. top gun is an underdog as a less prestigious genre film, but it’s failure to secure a SAG nomination puts it out of step with coda (i think failing to secure BOTH is unprecedented for BP contenders in recent years). the academy loves spielberg, but he was just in contention last year, and the film secured a win in ariana debose for best supporting actress, but nothing else. are they really going to be eager to give him the top prize for this one?
it does look more and more - looking at wins so far (1 for EEAO, 1 for fabelmans, and 1 for banshees) plus nominations (5 for EEAO, 4 for fabelmans, 5 for banshees), that are two frontrunners may end up being EEAO and banshees. among those two, banshees - with a non-american cast, a non-conventional director/screenwriter, comedy genre - has many attributes of an underdog, but so does EEAO - majority minority cast, first time award contending filmmakers, and a male supporting actor frontrunner (moonlight, green book, and coda all had male winners in the best supporting category). however…BP is also a studio award. all the social media driven (and bought) hype behind a24 makes searchlight pictures look like bleecker street. and a24 has only won best picture just once, with moonlight, and back then it was a genuine underdog. nowadays? i’m not so sure. and i don’t know that in 2017 they threw as much money and hype behind moonlight’s canpaign as they are now with EEAO. but maybe EEAO is poised to have a parasite year where it dominates the water cooler, pop culture, and critical buzz and then dominates award season? hmmmm

Hating Nicola is giving jealousy it’s whatever but hating a show that’s pure masterpiece and so loved that won so many baftas biggest award one can win in UK/Ireland brought a whole nation recognition and love is crazy! 3 things come up when asked about Ireland which is Niall Derry Girls (now mostly Nicola) and Cillian Murphy
btw even the interviewers said you were in Barbie so people do remember and she’s not in any makeup she’s showing her face and considering how big she’s become now Russel definitely gonna make her keep coming back people even saying she might be the doctor daughter which would work because nucti and Nicola are friends and they got great chemistry so maybe she’ll be recurring characters no one that big is ever in just 1 episode they always make them comeback!
Putting Nicola's name in the same sentence of 'popular Irish people' like OSCAR WINNER Cillian Murphy is insane behavior anon just FYI.
If you go up to a random person on the street.... I gaurantee you they'll have heard of Cillian Murphy and not Nicola Coughlan.
These two aren't comparable at all.
MMA fighter Conor McGregor is a more iconic Irish person than Nicola. Be fucking serious. (shoutout to him in the Road House remake btw he was so good in that)

'Jonathan Glazer’s Auschwitz drama takes best film, director and technical achievement prizes at annual ceremony, while Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal amongst a trio of winners for All of Us Strangers...
...All of Us Strangers, in which Andrew Scott plays a screenwriter who embarks on a new relationship at the same time reuniting with his long-dead parents, took the Attenborough award for British/Irish film of the year, as well as best actor for Scott.
Speaking to the audience, Scott said: “This is completely wonderful … it just launched our film in the most extraordinary way, and it’s made a difference.”
He nodded to the film’s position at the top of the Irish box office, and it also having made No 1 in the UK, too. “For a gay love story, it ain’t nothing,” he said. “Don’t say those films don’t make money.”
He went on to thank his co-stars Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, “my sexy mum and dad”, and the “also sexy” Paul Mescal, before thanking Haigh for allowing him to be part of a film which has elicited such emotional reactions. “Never in my life have I had such heartfelt, raw responses from audiences.”
Scott finished by paying tearful tribute to his own mother and father, “who I’ve thought about every day”.
Accepting the film of the year award, Haigh thanked critics for being “so generous with the film” and “connecting to it in really personal ways”.
Mescal won British/Irish Performer for his body of work in 2023; the actor has also appeared over the past 12 months in God’s Creatures, Foe and Carmen. Thanking the voters for having helped “films like [Strangers]” which “need to be seen”, he singled out Scott and Haigh, saying that working on the film “was one of the privileges of my life”.
While The Zone of Interest is in contention for five Oscars next month, All of Us Strangers was not nominated in a single category. And while both films are up for Baftas, All of Us Strangers’ six nominations do not include a nod for Scott – an omission which met with considerable backlash...
The sweep of honours for Glazer and Haigh’s films meant Oppenheimer – hotly tipped to sweep the Oscars – went home without a single award...'

The Fame Game (Prologue) | Tom Holland
Summary ↠ There’s just something about Tom Holland that makes your blood boil. He walks around like he owns the world, always with an unhelpful quip or irritating smirk on hand. You can’t stand him, and your feud has burned hard and bright for three years. Everything changes following an explosive evening at the Oscars, when a questionable encounter with the paparazzi lands you in some hot water with PR... fake dating au; enemies to lovers; actor!y/n.
Word count ↠ 4.6k
Warnings ↠ Alcohol, paparazzi, swearing, discussions of misogyny and the corruption of fame, Tom and Y/N are both very petty, dramatic assholes.
A/N ↠ Ahhh it’s here! I was really shocked by how many people responded to the announcement post for the series -- I hope so much that this doesn’t disappoint anyone lol. This series is my baby, and I’m very excited to share it with you all. Before we dive into the fake dating, we must first explore a very critical evening for Tom and Y/N... hahahah. This was a lot of fun to write. Please let me know if you’ve got any thoughts! :D
(Tom’s in the FFH premiere outfit because I’m still in love with that fit, and the jury’s out for whether or not the actual Tom needs glasses to see; this version of him just uses them as a fashion statement lmao)
((The biggest thank you ever to V, mischiefandi, for being this series’ no.1 supporter and proofing this -- love you mate))

ZERO: The Oscars (Y)
The atmosphere at Vanity Fair’s Oscars after-party is electric.
The soft boom of the latest pop tunes seeps into the air, mixing with the warm lights and the sounds of clinking champagne flutes. The room holds Hollywood’s best, and it seems no matter which direction you tilt your head, your eyes find themselves settling over a familiar face. You’re walking amongst legends tonight, and as you throw back your third glass of champagne of the evening, you let a small smile unfurl across your lips.
It isn’t your first time attending the Oscars, but it is the first time you haven’t felt utterly out of your depth surrounded by people of this calibre. When you’d first started in the acting industry, you’d found it incredibly unsettling to enter a room full of Oscar-winners. Even now you remember how your hands had felt slick with sweat as you’d nervously been introduced to Meryl Streep and Viola Davis, and how you’d felt imposter syndrome on a scale you’d never imagined possible. Time and experience have brought you many things, but most importantly, they have gifted you confidence. You’re 24 now, and the string of achievements and nominations tied to your belt is so impressive that they deem you no longer an outsider at the Oscars; instead, it’s as if you’ve been accepted into the fold.
But for all the enjoyment of the lavish after-party, you can’t stop your mood from plummeting. It’s all fun and games until your eyes sweep the room and settle on a smirking figure standing in the corner:
Tom Holland.
Just the sight of him makes your nostrils flare.
You think it must be true what they say: once you start to dislike someone, it’s as if every single thing they do irritates you. This is how you feel with Tom. Even the smallest, most insignificant details about him somehow manage to annoy you. You cannot stand the smell of his hair gel, and you detest the way he stubbornly refuses to mend his phone screen. Your teeth grit together every time you see that smug smirking grin hanging from his lips, and you get worked up by the way he always seems to swagger around as if he owns the room. The grievances fall into several categories: his aesthetic choices, his generally smug demeanour, and his irritating personality, and it all fosters your deep, unyielding disapproval of the man.
Tom infuriates you beyond belief - beyond words. And he’s standing across the room right now, staring at you over the rim of his wine glass with a teasing smirk hanging from his stupid lips.
You try to ignore him at first. You lick your lips and return your attention to a conversation with some of your co-stars. You know better than to try and approach anyone else tonight. Your reputation, as your PR team likes to put it, is ‘fragile’ at the moment. A string of uncomplimentary ex-lovers and a few disgruntled directors have shattered your pristine public image, making you regarded as both a rising talent and loose cannon by the media. There’s been a common trend recently of news outlets dragging your name through the mud, and the desperate words of PR as they’d begged you not to cause a scene tonight drift through your mind as you contemplate wandering over to Tom.
You know it isn’t in your best interests to engage with the man - no matter the occasion, your conversations always end explosively - but Tom is just standing there, staring at you persistently, and you just can’t help it.
Your tongue flicks out across your lower lip as you feel his hot gaze trailing around your made-up cheek. His eyes are intense - holding power over you, to the point where you have you excuse yourself from your conversation. An exasperated sigh slips past your lips as you turn around, preparing yourself for your encounter. Your stare finds him, and it follows Tom as he strides across the party towards you, one hand hanging easily from his trouser pocket as the other clasps an intricately engraved wine glass.
The frown on your lips deepens the nearer Tom gets, and as more details of his figure draw into focus. He’s got his chestnut waves slicked back tonight, with a few stray strands hanging out across his forehead. It makes him look dishevelled, but in a devilishly handsome sort of way - which makes sense, given you’re reasonably sure he must have some kind of relationship with Lucifer himself. Stretched across the wide expanse of his shoulders is a deep burgundy suit, and it cages him in tightly, leaving little to the imagination. Your lips curl into a poisonous grimace as your eyes finally fall on the glasses perched on his nose; you’re sure Tom doesn’t even need glasses, and it riles you up to see him parading the frames as a fashion statement.
But perhaps the thing about his ensemble that annoys you the most is the fact that you can’t look away. No matter how hard you beg yourself, you can’t drag your gaze away from Tom’s swagger, or the tight hold he has on the stem of the glass, or the way his eyes dance with a dark, mischievous glint as he falls to a stop in front of you. Tom is many things to you, but it’s undeniable that you find him attractive, and that fact often keeps you seething well into the early hours of the morning.
“Y/N,” Tom greets, his voice dripping charm. “Lovely to see you again.” His thin pink lips twist up into a smirk, and you find yourself clenching your fingers into fists around the tender stem of your champagne flute.
“Tom.” You step forwards, and your lips catch at his cheek as you press a firm, unwavering greeting to his face. You feel his warm hand slip from his pocket, and it grazes across your hip as Tom holds you closer. “You look to be enjoying yourself.”
When you pull back, you linger near him, allowing Tom to return the gesture by pressing his hot mouth to your cheek. He smells of rich, overpowering cologne, and you scrunch your nose up as his lips burn against your skin.
“It’s quite the party tonight,” he returns, stepping back. Tom’s beady little brown eyes run across your figure, taking in the long designer gown and the decadent sparkly necklace hanging from your neck. He graces you with an approving nod. “Are you having a nice time?”
“I was.” You pause to take a long sip of champagne, finding comfort in the way the bubbles pop against your tongue. You hope the alcohol will help to take the edge off the way your heart has started to pound against your ribs. “It’s a shame you had to come over here and ruin my mood.”
“Couldn’t help but notice you were staring at me, love,” he says, “Thought maybe you had something you’d like to say to me.”
You feel a hot spike of irritation as his lips curve effortlessly around the word love. Tom has always been a fan of pet names. The ease in which they roll from his tongue in that smooth, accented voice never fails to charm the room, and though you like to think you’re immune to his allure, you can feel the word spinning around your head like a broken record.
“Not really,” you return coolly, maintaining your composure with the poise and precision of a seasoned actress. You even manage to flash him an apologetic smile. “No big award for you tonight, though? Must be heartbreaking.”
Tom rolls his eyes. “Are you really still caught up on the BAFTA?” He asks, his voice lower and harder.
The mood between you dips, and instinctively you find yourself moving away into a quieter corner of the room. As you drift away from the hordes of celebrities guzzling champagne, it’s as if the facade between you breaks down. Your smirk becomes harder, your eyes less forgiving - and in return, Tom’s smile sours into a grimace, and he holds himself straighter. The masks you wear come off, leaving you both bare and exposed.
“No,” you respond darkly. You’re tucked away in the corner of the party, with your back almost against the wall as Tom lingers in front of you. Both of you have discarded your drinks glasses. “I couldn’t care less that you won the BAFTA, Tom. If the jury decided you were worthy, then you were worthy. I would have to be very unreasonable to disagree with the committee.”
“I don’t believe that for a second, Y/N.” Tom tilts his head to the side, flashing the tips of his shiny white teeth as his mouth loosens into a wild smile.
“Fine.” You give him an excessive sigh, and you let your eyes drift towards his mouth. “I don’t buy it, Tom.”
Tom’s suit jacket breaks out into wrinkles as he crosses his arms across his chest. “You don’t buy what?”
“This act.”
Tom almost rolls his eyes again. “And which act are you referring to, Y/N?”
“The Mr Nice Guy Act, Thomas.” The way he flexes his jaw makes you lean nearer and smirk. “Everyone here thinks you’re such a wonderful man, but I see right through it.”
It’s hard to know precisely when your feelings towards Tom became so hostile, but you like to pinpoint the night of the BAFTAs in 2017 as the day you surpassed the point of no return. You were younger then - both of you - and things quickly got out of hand. You know Tom likes to pinpoint your ‘jealousy’ following his win and your snub at the awards show as the catalyst for your tumultuous relationship, but both of you know that night was the product of several cumulative events.
Your best friend had worked with Tom’s mate Harrison, all those years ago in 2016. You knew Harrison through her, and you got on well enough with him, so when the BAFTA academy had nominated both you and Tom as contenders for Rising Star, Harrison had orchestrated an exchange of phone numbers. However, given your packed schedule and press engagements, you had failed to respond to all of Tom’s attempts to contact you.
One thing led to another. Tom assumed you were dodging his texts and started bad-mouthing you to Harrison. Word travelled to you that this guy - the competition - was throwing shade to your name, and so you might have made a few choice remarks about him on Ellen and suggested that Tobey Maguire was the best Spider-Man. Whatever. It was all so petty and childish, and it’d escalated to boiling point on the night of the BAFTAs when Tom hadn’t been able to shut up and thrust his win right into your face - quite literally. You can still remember the way he’d clutched the trophy as he’d shown it off in all its grandeur.
Ever since then, your relationship has been poisonous. A case of miscommunication and petty jealousy turned hostile, and now you’re in far too deep to even think about mending the fractured dynamic.
“I am a nice guy,” Tom tells you. His eyes skim across your face, and you don’t miss the way they drag across the curve of your lower lip.
“As if.” You ponder which anecdote you should fall back on to prove your point, and it takes a while to select one: the pool of Tom’s past mistakes and moves against you is vast and wide. “Would a nice guy conveniently forget to invite me to Harrison’s birthday party?”
Tom winces, and something almost like regret flickers out across his face before he meets your eyes and hardens up his gaze. “I’ve already told you that was a case of miscommunication,” he says slowly, patronising. “I doubt you would have enjoyed it anyway, Y/N. Wasn’t exactly your type of party.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” Your hand finds your waist, gripping firmly at your flesh to stop your fingers from shaking. The way Tom looks at you so intensely makes you feel strung-out and bare, and it’s almost as if he can see straight through you.
“It was a small, intimate gathering. From what I’ve been hearing, you’re a fan of the larger, more explosive parties, aren’t you?”
You could throttle him. You could really, truly throttle him. You know with certainty that Tom’s referring to the latest smear the media had run against you, which had placed you at an illegal rave in Downtown LA and cost you a role in a film you were passionate about.
“You shouldn’t believe everything you read in the tabloids, Tom.”
“Maybe not.” Tom’s closer to you now. You find your back brushing up against the wall as he steps nearer yet again, his shiny leather shoes sparkling beneath the light curving out from the chandeliers. “I’d like to think I know you quite well, though, Y/N. We have known each other for several years.”
“I’d use the word ‘known’ very loosely if I were you. I think it’s more like, ‘been plagued by’, but you do you, Tom.”
He laughs, and this time the noise is lighter. You feel a little woozy from the champagne - or maybe it’s his cologne - and you let your hand wander up to rest on the top of Tom’s suit. You drag your fingers across the smooth material, marvelling at how soft the designer garb is to touch.
“Do you like my suit?” Tom asks, his voice lower than before. There’s a strange charge to the air between you, and you find yourself nodding.
“I disagree with the glasses, but your suit is decent. I have to admit that this colour looks flattering on you.” The bold burgundy tones bring out the warmth in his eyes, even if the stupid thin frames of his glasses obscure them. You watch as his pupils widen and feel the warmth of Tom’s breath as he inches in closer.
“Thanks,” he says. Tom’s hand winds around your waist. “Your dress is very nice.”
You swallow, your throat suddenly feeling dry. You briefly wish that you had another glass of champagne to keep you occupied because you find your other hand joining the first and finding purchase on Tom’s shoulder. He’s very close to you, and there’s nowhere left to move because you’d backed up against the wall. Fleetingly you wonder what it must look like, to be hidden away at the back of the party and caged in like this, but you decide that the flurry of heated emotions passing through his eyes and the way his thumb pads over your waist is worth it.
Neither of you says a word, but you watch through wide eyes as Tom’s gaze flickers out across your lower lip. He inches in closer, almost painfully slowly, his demeanour radiating a shaky confidence as he tilts the angle of his head. You watch the hard lines of his mouth dissolve, and his smirk melts away into something like a smile as his eyes flutter shut. Now Tom is very close - so, so close - and the gap between your mouths narrows by the second.
He’s going to kiss you. You know he’s going to kiss you. Why is he going to kiss you? Why are you going to let him kiss you-
“Y/N! Hey, congrats on the film. I saw it last week with my wife, and she loved it-”
Tom springs back. You gasp a short breath of air as your eyes widen, and the film of scattered emotions that had temporarily disarmed you shatters. Tom’s cheeks are bright red, and he doesn’t seem to know where to look or what to do as he jams his hands into his trouser pockets and stares at the floor.
“-Oh, sorry, was I interrupting something?”
Your throat tickles as you shake your head, looking up to see Mark Ruffalo standing there, his expression relaxed but growing in confusion as he drinks in the awkward tension rippling between you and Tom.
“No,” you say immediately, a bite to your voice. You refuse to look at Tom. “You weren’t interrupting anything.”
Mark releases a breath of relief and launches back into his speech, complimenting you profusely on your performance. You become distracted as you listen to him, but not enough to forget about the way Tom had leaned closer and brushed his thumb across your side almost gently. After a few moments of conversation, you can’t stop yourself from glancing over towards Tom, only to notice that he’s slunk away elsewhere. His absence makes your heart twist.
Another hour slips away, and you find yourself returning to the Moët for release. You can feel your composure gliding away from you with each fateful sip. Tom seems to have vanished, and you find yourself questioning if he’s so embarrassed by your moment in the corner that he had to leave. You wonder if that would be better than him staying.
But eventually, your eyes seek him out, as they always seem to do. And you catch him chatting with a woman, his arm around her shoulders and his lips brushed against her ear. Tom seems to feel your gaze on him, and his deep brown eyes meet with yours. He raises his eyebrows and whispers something into the woman’s ear that makes her laugh, and it sends something whipping down your spine.
It isn’t just jealousy - it goes deeper than that. It’s the realisation that you could never get away with this behaviour. You know that if the roles were reversed and it was you who had been seen getting close to two men in one night, you would be assigned a whole host of derogatory names. The double standards that exist in this artificial world of cameras and headlines make you feel sick to your stomach. You are not jealous of the woman beneath Tom’s arm, though you will admit it makes you feel uneasy - it’s the hypocrisy of it all that makes you seethe.
“Excuse me,” you mutter to no one in particular. Tom’s eyes slip away from yours as you put down your empty glass and turn, heading in the direction of an exit. You wander the vast, glittering ballroom for a few moments before spying a door embedded in the back wall that leads out into a dark alleyway.
When you step out onto the street, the cold February air seems to bring your tipsiness to the forefront of your mind. You giggle softly to yourself and wrap your arms around your chest, your fingers rubbing rapid fiery circles across your exposed flesh as you try to drum up a heat.
You lean back against the wall and stare up at the vacant sky. LA is too polluted to see the stars, but you like to imagine they’re staring down back at you. In the distance, you can hear the sounds of laughter coming out from the hall, and out at the end of the alley you can see the street, cloaked in dark paparazzi vans and dim amber street-lamps, but tucked away up here alone, you feel at peace.
“Cinderella runs away from the ball, yet again.”
You scowl. Your eyes move away from the dark blanket of clouds to see Tom. He’s ditched the glasses, but you can see the legs sticking out from the pocket sewn to the top of his suit.
“Joined by her ugly pumpkin.” You screw up your nose at your own words, cursing your fizzled mind for messing up the tale. “That’s not right, is it?”
Tom approaches you, his cheeks full of a rosy tipsiness. “Dunno,” he murmurs. “Think I like it better than being called your ugly sister, though.”
“Ew.”
You share a loud, unruly laugh with Tom, your voices mixing almost melodically. When you sigh, you lean further against the wall.
“I hate it in there,” you find yourself admitting. “So many people were talking about me behind my back. It’s like they think I can’t tell that they’ve just been discussing me when I walk over and the conversation falls silent.” You slot your fingers together and play around with your thumbs. “Everything is so fake. It’s like a game to them.”
A cool breeze floats down the alley, and you find yourself shivering.
“It is a game,” Tom says slowly, all whilst slipping off his suit jacket. He holds it out to you, raising an eyebrow when you shake your head. “It’s cold, Y/N. I know you’re stubborn, but neither of us wants you to freeze out here.”
The mood between you feels tender, and you let yourself accept his warm jacket. You throw it across your shoulders and feel the warm embrace of his suit, and the husky traces of cologne nestled to the fabric, but Tom’s looking at you with an intense gaze, and the sight of his golden browns draws you back to the scenes from inside the party.
“Saw you chatting with a woman inside,” you say, words a little sharper. “Trying to see how many times you have to try it on before someone bites?”
Tom flinches. The air fills with the sound of him clicking his tongue as he rubs his hands together. “You are so fucking petty, Y/N.”
You raise an eyebrow, responding to his clipped voice with surprise. “Hit a nerve, have I?”
He groans softly. “Sorry,” he mutters, “I shouldn’t swear at you. You just get under my bloody skin.”
You shrug. “You’ve said worse.”
“So have you.”
“Only because you deserve it.”
Tom’s bearing in on you again, but this time you feel more at ease. The scent of his cologne mixes with the sweet champagne that lays fresh across your palette, and it makes you feel delirious. You can’t stop yourself from reaching up and draping your hands across his shoulders, bringing him nearer.
“You drive me crazy,” Tom admits. His voice is husky, his eyes dark and intense. In the slight breeze, strands of his hair waft across his forehead.
“I can’t stand you,” you return. Your heart beats wildly in your chest as his hands dig into your waist. The rough render on the building behind you digs into your back as you loop your arms around Tom’s neck and bring him in closer.
“Neither can I, darling.”
It’s like magnetism - some sort of invisible force pulling you in before you can even fathom it. One moment you’re staring at Tom, scepticism in your eyes and anxiety thick in your chest, the next he’s surged forwards and captured your lips in a messy, sensational kiss. You gasp into his mouth, and your fingers tighten against the short hair at the nape of his neck as you kiss him back harshly. Your noses bump and your teeth collide as Tom grabs at your sides with fervour, and having him clutching at you is so hot that it takes your breath away. The kiss is messy and hurried, and it seems to melt down all the built-up tension and frustration you’ve been nurturing for years. It makes your head hurt, and all you can focus on is how crazy it is that you are kissing Tom Holland - and, horrifyingly, how much you don’t seem to hate it.
It comes crashing down when there’s a round of flashes, and you hear the telltale sound of paparazzi photographs.
“Shit!” You push Tom away from you immediately, your breath hitching as your head snaps down to the end of the alley. Unbeknownst to either of you, you’ve been spotted by the men with those large, invasive lenses. The flashes continue, and you turn away, your actions almost in slow motion as you feel a wave of nausea travel across your chest.
“Y/N!”
“Tom, Tom!”
“Are you dating?”
“Having a bit of fun tonight, Y/N?”
A chorus of cataclysmic yells come racing down the alley and the howls of the paparazzi mix with the loud sound of camera shutters.
“Fuck.” Tom grabs your arm, and he pulls you away from them, bringing you both back into the party. There’s a tightness in your chest as you gasp for breath, walking in dizzying strides as you card your fingers through your hair anxiously.
“No, no, no,” you mutter to yourself. You can hear the calls of the paparazzi ringing in your ears, and you dig your fingers into your temples for relief as you snap your head to glare at Tom. “Why did you just kiss me? What’s wrong with you?”
Tom looks pale, and his eyes are round with shock, but he still manages to stare at you incredulously. “You kissed me too?”
You bury your head in your hands. “This is it - this is the last straw. They’re going to have a field day with this.” You peek out at Tom through gaps in your fingers, laughing humourlessly. Your chest burns as you take in his disarmed expression and his deep chocolate eyes. “This is the end.”
“It… It was just one kiss.”
You shake your head furiously. “They’ll run with it. They’ll make a spectacle of us.” Your nails dig into the soft palms of your hands. “You are such an asshole.”
Tom’s mouth, a little red and puffy, twists into something of a snarl. “You kissed me! Why is this my fault?”
“It’s always your fault.” You pause and shake your head. You can’t help but fall back on the naive thought that this truly is all Tom’s fault. You’d been fine before him. You’d been looking into the starless sky. You’d been at peace. He’d just had to waltz on out and trick you into his lips. “Well, I hope you enjoy the end of your career.”
He raises a thin eyebrow. “What do you mean by that?”
“You’ve been associated with me, which is the equivalent of getting a big black line scored right across your name.” You reach up and jerk his jacket from your shoulders, and roughly shove it back into Tom’s hands.
“I think you’re overreacting.”
“Really?” Your gaze hardens. “This is all just a game, Tom, don’t you see? We don’t get to decide who stays on top.” You laugh humourlessly, your tongue tasting sourly of champagne. “We have fucked up.”
Tom sets his jaw. One by one, he stuffs his arms through his suit jacket and tugs it back around his body, sinking into it forcibly. He pulls his glasses from the pocket and places them back on the bridge of his nose, balancing them crookedly.
“Goodnight, Y/N,” Tom remarks, his voice cold and sharp. You briefly wonder if he understands the magnitude of the situation, and as he sweeps away without so much as a kiss on the cheek goodbye, you realise he probably does.
Without yet wholly understanding it, one drunken kiss has sealed your fate. As you stand there, twiddling with your thumbs in the back corner of the Vanity Fair party, your mind races. You know with absolute certainty that things will never be the same again, but not even your wildest dreams could compare to what is about to come.

Taylor and Joe in 2019
January 2nd – Joe is seen leaving Taylor’s Tribeca apartment. (x)
January 6th – They both attend the Golden Globes in LA.
Tumblr media
“While Taylor presented, Joe watched the teleprompter near him and smiled and [his The Favourite costar] Nicholas Hoult patted him on the back. After Gaga walked on stage, Joe shifted his gaze to the stage near Taylor. She was smiling at him while she walked off the stage. She looked over her shoulder and gave a sassy cute little smile at his table’s direction.”

January 6th – An ET reporter asks Joe if he and Taylor would ever work together. (x)
“It’s not planned at the moment but who knows.”

“Swift joined Alwyn at Fox’s party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The instant she entered the event, the “Gorgeous” singer made a beeline for The Favourite star, putting her head on his shoulder and hand on his chest. Swift didn’t leave Alwyn’s side, posing for photos and chatting with Alwyn’s co-star, Nicholas Hoult, as she kept her hand around Alwyn’s waist. At the end of the evening, the two exited through the back of the venue and away from the crowds.”

FOX Post Show Celebration was also one of the starriest, with The Favourite cast holding court at their table and having a ball throughout the night. Big winner Olivia Colman was seen taking shots with Joe Alwyn, who was accompanied by girlfriend Taylor Swift the whole night.
The Grammy winner cheered on the cast as they took the shots and was affectionate with her beau throughout the celebration. The ultra-private couple was spotted kissing and cozying up at their table along with Alwyn’s Favourite costar Emma Stone and her Saturday Night Live writer boyfriend Dave McCary.

They looked at each other a few times and it seemed like Joe was trying to make sure she was OK and gauge when she wanted to leave. They were then escorted out of a private exit together.”

Taylor Swift spotted caressing Joe Alwyn after sneaking into BAFTA dinner (x)
Determined to keep a low profile, Taylor swerved the main event at the Royal Albert Hall attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and headed straight to the exclusive dinner at the swanky Grosvenor Hotel on Park Lane.
“Taylor and Joe spent most of the evening in the middle of the room near the head table and based on table 68. They were chatting to colleagues but Taylor didn’t hide her affection towards Joe. She was seen caressing his back as they chatted away to a pal. It was clear they were an item but Taylor appeared conscious not to make a big deal about her appearance - she was just there for a good time rather than working like she would have to at the Grammys. Taylor didn’t leave Joe’s side all evening.”
Keen to keep a memento from the night, Taylor was seen taking home two pottery rabbit table decorations from her table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taylor talked to a Grazia reporter about The Favourite and how proud she was of him. (x)
While Grazia chatted to Joe about working with Olivia Colman (‘She was amazing,’ he gushed), Taylor appeared and gave him a congratulatory squeeze. ‘I was watching the show from home,’ she told us. ‘Every time The Favourite won another award, I was just squealing! I couldn’t believe it,’ she continued. ‘It’s so great for him – and it’s his first time coming to the BAFTAs, so it’s exciting. It’s a big deal.’ The singer, who is currently filming Cats, added how ‘proud’ she was of Joe’s success.

How to fight fair with the ones you love. Chances are you’re not trying to hurt the person you love and they aren’t trying to hurt you. If you can wind the tension of an argument down to a conversation about where the other person is coming from, there’s a greater chance you can remove the shame of losing a fight for one of you and the ego boost of the one who “won” the fight. I know a couple who, in the thick of a fight, say “Hey, same team.” Find a way to defuse the anger that can spiral out of control and make you lose sight of the good things you two have built. They don’t give out awards for winning the most fights in your relationship. They just give out divorce papers.
Apologizing when you have hurt someone who really matters to you takes nothing away from you. Even if it was unintentional, it’s so easy to just apologize and move on. Try not to say “I’m sorry, but...” and make excuses for yourself. Learn how to make a sincere apology, and you can avoid breaking down the trust in your friendships and relationships.
For too long, the projected opinions of strangers affected how I viewed my relationships. Whether it was the general internet consensus of who would be right for me, or what they thought was “couples goals” based on a picture I posted on Instagram. That stuff isn’t real. For an approval seeker like me, it was an important lesson for me to learn to have my OWN value system of what I actually want.
Playing mind games is for the chase. In a real relationship or friendship, you’re shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t tell the other person how you feel, and what could be done to fix it. No one is a mind reader. If someone really loves you, they want you to verbalize how you feel. This is real life, not chess.

What made you decide to go with the name Benjamin Button?
I really liked the movie Benjamin Button.

Other people still saw Swift, Alwyn, Pattinson, and Waterhouse, and one onlooker told Us Weekly that the date happened. It was good fun. "The four were laughing and talking" all night, the onlooker said. "They were at a table, just the four of them. Rob and Taylor were across from each other."

“I started seeing her around at like the Oscar parties when she was accompanying her boyfriend and I just went up to her and I was like 'hey, you know it's been a long time and I think we've grown up a little bit and I just wanted to say I'm sorry.”
July 18th – Taylor and Joe fly to Manchester, and it’s pretty likely that this photo (posted on July 26) was from this trip, because it was taken at the Peak District and that’s an hour long drive from Manchester.
Tumblr media

My 2022 Oscar Predictions
Cinema is back! The last year since the 2021 Oscars were handed out in April 2021 has given us big blockbuster experiences: “Dune”, “No Time To Die”, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and latest “The Batman”, which of course will have to wait until next year’s Oscars to fight for the awards. While the three aforementioned 2021 Blockbusters are all up for Oscars, it is only “Dune” that really is part of the biggest races with no less than 10 nominations only surpassed by Netflix’ “The Power of the Dog”, which highlights another trend of 2021: the atmospheric slowburner. Apart from Jane Campion’s take on the West, we were given beautiful slowburners such as “Drive My Car”, “Nightmare Alley” and “Mass” (which sadly hasn’t been nominated for anything). Other trends were the comeback of musicals with films like “In the Heights” (not nominated), “Cyrano” (one nomination) “Tick, tick…BOOM!” (two nominations) and of course Spielberg’s long awaited remake of “West Side Story” (7 nominations) and some true feel good stories as we got in “King Richard” (6 nominations), “CODA” (3 nominations) and “Licorice Pizza” (3 nominations). Finally, as a Dane, I of course HAVE to highlight the historic presence of “Flee”, which is the first film ever to score trio nominations for Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film.
All in all, however, I personally find last year’s slate of films to be stronger. There were simply more films I loved last year. Although, I still like a lot of the films from this year, “Flee” is actually the only one of them all to get a 5/5 score from me on Letterboxd. In all 53 films were nominated and I ended up seeing 50 of them with only a couple of short films sadly missing from my watchlist. In no way a sign of devaluing the shorts, unlike what The Academy has done to those three categories along with Film Editing, Make-Up and Hairstyling, Production Design, Score and Sound. A shameful decision forced by ABC’s negligence of the crafts without which there would be no films to celebrate. I hope to see plenty of artists, presenters and winners protesting this decision on the red carpet, during the show and after the show, so the decision will be rolled back before next year’s awards.
So who will win? Here are my predictions: (In parenthesis are my personal ratings of the films from 1-5)
Best Picture
Tumblr media
Belfast (3,5)
CODA (4,0)
Don’t Look Up (4,0)
Drive My Car (4,5)
Dune (4,0)
King Richard (4,0)
Licorice Pizza (4,5)
Nightmare Alley (4,0)
The Power of the Dog (4,5)
West Side Story (3,5)
It started off as being Belfast’s to lose. Then that slowly disappeared out of the race and for a long time it looked like it would be a one horse race with The Power of the Dog as the obvious winner. However, that only until the entire cast of CODA hit the stage at the SAG Awards to collect their SAG Ensemble award. Since then CODA has taken home adapted screenplay at BAFTA (ahead of British Belfast) and WGA as well as PGA. Some heavy weight awards to walk into the Oscars with. And it looks like it very well could be enough for CODA, who might also have an advantage in the preferential ballot system. I have a clear idea that CODA is easier to love and it is to hate, whereas The Power of the Dog might be hard to love and easier to dislike. I doubt many people will have The Power of the Dog in the middle of their ballot - it will either take a top spot or a bottom spot, whereas I think CODA will take top spots and middle spots as people tend to put their hated or disliked films in the bottom. Ultimately, however, I think - right now - that The Power of the Dog still have the widest support within the Academy, although I might very well change that five or six times in the run in to show start. It is that close!
Personally, I didn’t directly dislike any of the ten nominees. I was truly impressed with the visual and sonic work in Spielberg’s West Side Story, but I simply never bought the central love story making it a somewhat cold experience for me, which I was surprised by. Maybe it will change on a rewatch. I rated a lot of the films 4 out of 5 stars of which I want to highlight Dune, which I was truly impressed by, but I couldn’t stop feeling it was a long trailer for a much bigger film; awards will rain on the sequel, I’m sure. Nightmare Alley is beautiful and atmospheric but a bit too slow in its second half, and King Richard is one of the best biopics of recent years. CODA is as heartwarming as it gets and a truly well-acted audience pleaser with some much needed and important representation! On a rewatch I changed my score for Don’t Look Up from a 4,5 to a 4, but McKay’s furious bulldozer subtle satire still works surprisingly well for me, although it is still clearly far from the masterpiece The Big Short. Belfast is a nice and lighthearted depiction of war through the eyes of a child featuring some stunning acting and a super interesting sound design, but I lacked some character development and a deeper connection to the story to appreciate it further. The Power of the Dog is in many ways a masterful film, although it might suffer a bit from the same limitations as previous Netflix films from masterful directors such as Alfonso Cuaron (Roma), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and David Fincher (Mank) in the sense that it is  a bit closed, albeit nowhere near as much as the other films mentioned. With 12 nominations it clearly has widespread and well-deserved support and it grew on me on a rewatch too, taking my third place. My two personal favourites, however, are Drive My Car, which really moved me on a deeper level and was a truly impressive adaptation from Hamaguchi, and Licorice Pizza, which simply is one of the best times I have had in a cinema the last year. Neither of the two stand a chance, though. Personally, I would have loved to see at least one of the following: Flee, Spencer and/or The Worst Person in the World.
Who will win: The Power of the Dog
Potential spoiler: CODA
Personal favourite: Licorice Pizza
Should have been there: Spencer
Actor in a Leading Role
Tumblr media
Javier Bardem, Being the Ricardos (2,0)
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Andrew Garfield, Tick, tick…BOOM! (4,5)
Will Smith, King Richard (4,0)
Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth (4,0)
The category that deflated the finale of last year’s Oscars with Anthony Hopkins’ extremely deserved, yet clearly unplanned win, is back with another seemingly clear cut winner in advance this year. Last year, Chadwick Boseman was on everyone’s lips and this year Will Smith’s name is as good as already engraved in the Best Leading Actor Oscar. He is charming and inspiring in King Richard; his best performance since The Pursuit of Happiness and perhaps his career best. The only possible challenger for him seems to be Benedict Cumberbatch who might also give a career best performance in The Power of the Dog; he is as vile as he is fragile and his performance is constantly unnerving. My personal favourite, however, is once again out of tune with the consensus: Andrew Garfield broke my heart in Tick, tick…BOOM! where he sang and performed with all he got as Jonathan Larson. Another career best? The three of them are outstanding! Washington is always good, but yet, to me, he never managed to make The Tragedy of Macbeth more than a(n extremely stunning) visual showpiece. The inclusion of Javier Bardem is honestly insulting to quite a big bunch of actors who gave beautiful, layered performances. Personally, I would have loved to see Nic Cage for Pig, Hidetoshi Nishijima for Drive My Car or one of my personal favourites of the year Peter Dinklage for Cyrano who simply broke my heart with his performance as the titular character; he is one of the most charismatic actors to see and was probably the one closest to getting the nod.
Who will win: Will Smith
Potential spoiler: Benedict Cumberbatch
Personal favourite: Andrew Garfield
Should have been there: Nicolas Cage / Peter Dinklage
Actor in a Supporting Role
Tumblr media
Ciaran Hinds, Belfast (3,5)
Troy Kotsur, CODA (4,0)
Jesse Plemons, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
J.K. Simmons, Being the Ricardos (2,)
Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Another two horse race involving The Power of the Dog and another two horse race where it looks destined to lose. Kodi Smit-McPhee started award season in a strong way, but - as with Best Picture - the moment Kotsur and the CODA cast took the stage at SAG changed everything. Kotsur has won everything since then and he would be a well-deserved winner as his performance in the film is both extremely funny (completely relying on ASL for the laughs) and heartwarming. Add to that his extreme likability when entering the stage and you have one of the most certain winners of the night. I would not complain with a Smit-McPhee win either, though. Plemons is the least showy in The Power of the Dog, but it was still a nice surprise to see him on nomination morning; he will get a lot closer to an Oscar win in the coming years, I’m sure. Ciaran Hinds is extremely charming in Belfast and creates a lovable character. The inclusion of J.K. Simmons, much like that of Bardem in leading actor, is a disaster; his character was one-dimensional and uninspired. Considering the amount of beautiful supporting actor performances we have had this year, his inclusion could only have been topped by the inclusion of Jared Leto for House of Gucci. With all this being said, I have to highlight Jason Isaacs in Mass - it is a crime that he wasn’t nominated. Heck, I honestly think he should be winning. Mike Faist for West Side Story could also have deserved a nomination here and so could Anders Danielsen Lie in The Worst Person in the World, although you could argue that he balances on being a lead.
Who will win: Troy Kotsur
Potential spoiler: Kodi Smit-McPhee
Personal Favourite: Troy Kotsur
Could have been there: Jason Isaacs (Mass)
Actress in a Leading Role
Tumblr media
Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye (3,5)
Olivia Colman, The Lost Daughter (3,5)
Penélope Cruz, Parallel Mothers (3,5)
Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos (2,0)
Kristen Stewart, Spencer (4,5)
Just as last year, this category is all up in the air! Before the awards season started everyone had Kristen Stewart as a clear winner, then she lost Golden Globe to Nicole Kidman who took the favourite tag especially as Kristen Stewart missed several nominations. Then Lady Gaga took over for House of Gucci only to not even get an Oscar nomination allowing Chastain to take over  with wins at SAG and Critics Choice. And now, after the release of secret Oscar ballots, Penélope Cruz looks ready for a last minute surge. Who will win??? It looks like Chastain, who I really liked in Tammy Faye, but look out for Cruz or Colman! Both of them deliver amazing work in their films and they are extremely well-liked in Hollywood and I might very well end up going with a surprise last minute win for Cruz. Stewart’s performance in Spencer is in my eyes easily the best performance of the year, but the general lack of love for the film makes it hard to imagine a world where she wins, and Kidman seems to be out of the race again too. Renate Reinsve should have been here for The Worst Person in the World and so should Alana Haim for Licorice Pizza.
Who will win: Jessica Chastain
Potential spoiler: Penélope Cruz
Personal favourite: Kristen Stewart
Could have been there: Renate Reinsve and Alana Haim
Actress in a Supporting Role
Tumblr media
Jessie Buckley, The Lost Daughter (3,5)
Ariana DeBose, West Side Story (3,5)
Judi Dench, Belfast (3,5)
Kirsten Dunst, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Aunjanue Ellis, King Richard (4,0)
One of the easiest categories to call of the evening. If Ariana DeBose doesn’t win for her scene stealing performance in West Side Story then it is easily one of the biggest shocks in recent Oscar history; she has won EVERY important award until now. While she is very good, my personal favourite of the five nominees is Jessie Buckley who simply gets better and better, and for me, she stole the show in The Lost Daughter. Ellis has some stunning scenes in King Richard and Dunst has rarely been better. Dench is biggest question mark here - she’s just here on merit, right? The fact that she was picked ahead of Caitriona Balfe for Belfast has been widely discussed and righly so - Balfe is the heart of that film and the only possible explanation is that many people placed her in lead… Anne Dowd and Martha Plimpton in Mass really should have been in contention here, albeit Plimpton could have been placed in lead.
Who will win: Ariana DeBose
Potential spoiler: None (but Dunst if I have to pick one)
Personal favourite: Jessie Buckley
Should have been there: Anne Dowd (Mass)

Encanto (4,0)
Flee (5,0)
Luca (4,0)
The Mitchells vs the Machines (4,0)
Raya and the Last Dragon (3,5)
The Disney category is more Disney than ever this year with three of five nominees. Flee is the only masterpiece of this year’s nominees in my opinion, yet I don’t think it will take home any Oscar, because the love for it will probably be split between categories. It’s not my personal favourite in this category either. Encanto looks destined to win with its stunning animation and record beating soundtrack, however The Mitchells vs the Machines is the most playful of the films and Luca packs the most moving story. Raya and the Last Dragon is the weakest the category has to offer, although it in no means is a bad film.
Who will win: Encanto

Greig Fraser, Dune (4,0)
Dan Laustsen, Nightmare Alley (4,0)
Ari Wegner, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Bruno Delbonnel, The Tragedy of Macbeth (4,0)
Janusz Kaminski, West Side Story (3,5)
Perhaps the best line-up of any category this year. Five amazing examples of cinematography. Fraser’s work in Dune is otherworldly and stunning in its many sci-fi vistas, Laustsen continues his atmospheric and dark collaboration with del Toro in Nightmare Alley, Wegner’s grand vistas in The Power of the Dog makes it one of the most stunning films of the year, Delbonnel creates some fascinating images in The Tragedy of Macbeth and Kaminski’s opening scene in West Side Story makes his nomination well-deserved for a film that packs plenty of cinematography magic. I honestly will not complain no matter who wins, but Fraser walks into the night as the favourite perhaps strengthened by people’s admiration for his current work on The Batman. Look out for Wegner, however, as her work is equally stunning and she has picked up a couple of wins. I would have loved to see Claire Mathon recognised for her work on Spencer, but I don’t know what to kick out if I’m honest.
Who will win: Dune
Potential spoiler: The Power of the Dog

Cruella (3,5)
Cyrano (3,5)
Dune (4,0)
Nightmare Alley (4,0)
West Side Story (3,5)
If a film about two fashion designers battling against each other with two very distinct styles, which features a ton of costumes should not win this category, what should? And so it will be; Cruella is destined to take this home and it would be well-deserved.
Who will win: Cruella
Potential spoiler: Dune

Directing
Tumblr media
Kenneth Branagh, Belfast (3,5)
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Drive My Car (4,5)
Paul Thomas Anderson, Licorice Pizza (4,5)
Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Steven Spielberg, West Side Story (3,5)
Last year was a historic year for this category; the first time that two female directors were nominated in the same year. This year we only have one, but she will undoubtedly win. Jane Campion’s admirable work with The Power of the Dog looks unbeatable and she could have gotten well-deserved female company from Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter) or Julia Ducournau (Titane). However, the biggest snub here is the omission of Denis Villeneauve for his work on Dune; a work often labelled un-adaptable that goes on to get 10 nominations but not for directing? Get out! Hamaguchi’s work is beautiful, but his screenplay is even stronger than his directing. West Side Story and Belfast are clear passion projects, but I definitely think that Spielberg’s direction is the strongest of the two. Finally, PTA just knows how to set up memorable scenes.
Who will win: Jane Campion
Potential spoiler: Steven Spielberg
Personal favourite: Jane Campion
SHOULD have been there: Denis Villeneuve

Ascension (4,0)
Attica (4,0)
Flee (4,0)
Summer of Soul (…or, when the revolution could not be televised) (4,5)
Writing With Fire (3,5)
If Flee had only been nominated in this category it would have won and frankly, it should win! One of the best documentaries of recent years. However, Summer of Soul looks like the winner, and to be fair it is brilliant film that flawlessly manages to mix the stunning concert footage into a socio-political context to make a both entertaining and thought-provoking film. Ascension was deeply fascinating, Attica was a hard watch and Writing With Fire was deeply inspiring, albeit a bit uninspired film-wise. But a great year for documentaries!

Audible (3,5)
Lead Me Home (2,0)
The Queen of Basketball (4,0)
Three Songs for Benazir (3,5)
When We Were Bullies (have not seen this)
A category that is historically difficult to predict. However, this year The Queen of Basketball seems like quite a good pick in a somewhat disappointing year. Audible is its closest competitor as Three Songs for Benazir felt a bit too short and something felt off with Lead Me Home’s stylish take on its deeply sad focus.
Who will win: The Queen of Basketball
Potential spoiler: Audible
Personal Favourite: The Queen of Basketball

Don’t Look Up (4,0)
Dune (4,0)
King Richard (4,0)
The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Tick, tick…BOOM! (4,5)
We have all the different types of editing in place here. The fast-paced, playing-an-active-part-in-the-film editing of McKay’s satires in Don’t Look Up, impressive action editing in Dune, fast-paced sports and montage editing in King Richard, seemless editing in The Power of the Dog and the more artistic and musical-based editing of Tick, tick…BOOM! A good thing to have in mind when predicting here is the obvious editing for the naked eye. King Richard or Tick, tick…BOOM! look like good bets then, but I have an idea that Dune will come close to a technical sweep and as such it needs this as well, but look out for the two others. West Side Story could have been in the mix here!

Drive My Car (4,5)
Flee (5,0)
The Hand of God (3,0)
Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom (3,5)
The Worst Person in the World (4,5)
Drive My Car is up for four Oscars including Best Picture. This race is looking like a non-brainer. Flee is deserving and so is The Worst Person in the World, but they don’t seem to stand a chance. Lunana was a nice surprise and it will get a well-deserved attention boost thanks this nomination. I didn’t care that much for The Hand of God and would have liked it (VERY MUCH) if Titane had taken its place.

Coming 2 America (1,5)
Cruella (3,5)
Dune (4,0)
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (3,5)
House of Gucci (2,0)
The only nomination for the travesty that was House of Gucci and it will not get close to winning it despite its prosthetic work. Prosthetics were done better in both Dune and especially Coming 2 America. I think The Eyes of Tammy Faye will ride on the possible win for Chastain, but look out for the transformations of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in Coming 2 America. Cruella is here for the hairstyling but it will settle for its costume win. Again, Titane should have been there!
Who will win: The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Don’t Look Up (4,0)
Dune (4,0)
Encanto (4,0)
Parallel Mothers (3,5)
The Power of the Dog (4,5)
Some strong scores here, with Zimmer looking like the clear winner for his loud, ominous work on Dune. Iglesias’ score for Parallel Mothers is brilliant and controls the film like no other nominee. Greenwood comes closest to doing that with his work in The Power of the Dog and he should have been here for Spencer as well. However, the scores of Britell and Franco in Don’t Look Up and Encanto are the most listenable outside of their films.
Who will win: Dune
Potential spoiler: Parallel Mothers
Personal favourite: The Power of the Dog
Should have been there: Spencer

“Be Alive”, King Richard (4,0)
“Dos Oruguitas”, Encanto (4,0)
“Down to Joy”, Belfast (3,5)
“No Time to Die”, No Time to Die (4,0)
“Somehow You Do”, Four Good Days (2,5)
Disney are hating themselves for not letting “We don’t talk about Bruno” compete, although “Dos Oruguitas” is a stunning song that might just ride on the back of the record beating hit to give Lin-Manuel Miranda his EGOT. However, Billie Eilish and Beyonce would want a word in that fight with Eilish looking like the winner. Diane Warren is here again, because you know - apparently she has to, and “Down to Joy” is bland, although it is a plus that it is featured in the actual film. “Just Look Up” should have been there, as should “Beyond the Shore” from CODA.

West Side Story (3,5)
Five stunning films here highlighted by their corresponding cinematography nominations. While I think Dune will get that one, I think it might just lose this one to Nightmare Alley. Will the Academy go with the extremely impressive world building of Dune or the atmospheric del Toro magic of Nightmare Alley? It will be very close. Cyrano and Spencer could have been there, but who should they replace really?

The most adult line-up in this category for years. Affairs of the Art and Bestia are quite disturbing, while The Windshield Wiper is stunning and fascinating. Robin Robin looks like the favourite and it is extremely charming and cute, but I am going for a surprise win for The Windshield Wiper.

Ala Kachuu - Take and Run (4,0)
The Dress (3,0)
The Long Goodbye (4,0)
On My Mind (2,5)
Please Hold (have not seen this)
The Long Goodbye is hard-hitting and can feel slightly un-finished, but it is strong and has the star factor of Riz Ahmed, although that didn’t help The Letter Room (Oscar Isaac) last year. Danish contender On My Mind felt way too constructed and managed to feel overlong despite its 18 minute runtime. Finally, Ala Kachuu and The Dress are hard to watch, but Ala Kachuu seems to have a lot more heart and sympathy for its subject and, thus, it looks like the one to beat The Long Goodbye if one has to. Unless it will be the Black Mirror-ish Please Hold, which I sadly have not seen.
Who will win: The Long Goodbye

Belfast (3,5)
Dune (4,0)
No Time to Die (4,0)
The Power of the Dog (4,5)
West Side Story (3,5)
Belfast has an interesting sound design as one of its strongest assets and the sound design of The Power of the Dog really helps build its atmosphere. However, it seems like it will be between the remaining three. Of them Dune seems like the strongest, but look out for West Side Story. If Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho should have been anywhere, it probably should have been here.
Who will win: Dune

Dune (4,0)
Free Guy (3,0)
No Time to Die (4,0)
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (3,5)
Spider-Man: No Way Home (4,0)
Last year I wrote: “A category that would probably have been dominated by films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Dune and Black Widow in a normal 2020.” Of these, only Dune made it into the category in the end. Free Guy is the surprise addition here with is playful effects, and also this is the only option to give Spidey an Oscar, although Shang-Chi arguably had better special effects. However, Dune looks destined to win this as its effects played an integral part in its world building.
Who will win: Dune

CODA (4,0)
Drive My Car (4,5)
Dune (4,0)
The Lost Daughter (3,5)
The Power of the Dog (4,5)
While I really liked CODA, I think it is wild that it might just beat (in particular) Drive My Car in this category. That ought to be winning, but The Power of the Dog looks like the one to beat for CODA as in Best Picture. And I actually think it will, even though it might just be the weakest of these five screenplays.
Who will win: CODA
Potential spoiler: The Power of the Dog
Personal favourite: Drive My Car
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Tumblr media
Belfast (3,5)
Don’t Look Up (4,0)
King Richard (4,0)
Licorice Pizza (4,5)
The Worst Person in the World (4,0)
I thought this would be Paul Thomas Anderson’s spot for finally winning an Oscar, but him losing the WGA to Adam McKay for Don’t Look Up was quite the curve ball. Maybe Branagh will take it home for Belfast, although I did have some issues with his writing here. Can McKay do it with Don’t Look Up? It seems too divisive, but it is in no way impossible. The real winner, however, should be The Worst Person in the World and I would love for it to win! Fran Kranz’ screenplay for Mass should have been here easily knocking King Richard out of the five.
Who will win: Belfast
Potential spoiler: Don’t Look Up
Personal favourite: The Worst Person in the World
Should have been there: Mass
I wish everyone the best of Oscar nights! May the best films win!

I saw you mention Sandition season 2. Is that a possibility?!?!?! I assumed it would just be a 8 episode miniseries but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for there to be more.
Hey!
It’s just a theory/rumor at the moment that this is in fact only the first season with more to follow. This hasn’t been confirmed and it could potentially depend on how well the show is recieved.
However I do think there’s reasons to think there will be more seasons, namely:
1. Andrew Davies, the creator of the show, said he’d love to do more and that season 1 leaves off in a place where he hopes people want to revisit Sanditon. And when the celebrated writer of Pride and Prejudice 1995, winner of multiple Baftas and writer to some of the best novel adaptations of all time says he’d like to do more, it’s likely that people will take him up on his word.
2. ITV actually commissed the building of very extensive sets for this show, actually building most of the town of Sandtion. It seems odd that they’d invest this much money in what is a limited 8 episode series. Particularily since they no longer have Downton Abbey (their greatest success) and are unlikely to comission a new season of Victoria. I think they’re looking for their new serialized period drama.
3. Theo James is an executive producer on the show. I assume he requested it and they gave him the position because they wanted him to accept the part of Sidney (which was very smart of them). However, if there wasn’t a chance of multiple seasons, I don’t see why Theo would be interested in being executive producer in the 1st place.
Now, there might not be an announcement straight after the show ends (and there might not be one at all, of course). But I do think that if a second season will come into play, they will announce a Christmas special for Sanditon.
This show is so beautiful to look at that it’s made for a Christmas fairy lights, snow everywhere extravaganza. And can’t you just see the promotion now: “Mr Tom Parker cordially invites to Sanditon for the festive season”???
Anyway, it might just be me. I fell in love with Christmas specials watching Downton Abbey.
We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess but I’m with you, @justbrie. I would love a second season!

So, Taron got the award, he did the post-show press, he probably partied it up, what’s next? OSCAR RACE! Yeah, so Taron’s place in the Oscar race has shifted a lot. I’ve covered this on here before, but I’ll give a short recap. After the standing ovation at Cannes, Taron got some real Oscar buzz. Of course, this was in May (so, at that time we were a lot closer to the previous Oscars than the next one). Thus, over the summer, some commentators felt that Taron was bound to lose momentum by February. By mid-summer, the best actor race exploded. Like, this is probably one of the most competitive best actor race in recent years. When it became apparent that the race consisted of heavy hitters like Robert Dinero, Leonardo Dicaprio, Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jonathan Pryce, and Eddie Murphy, it was unclear if Taron could break through. A lot of the analyses I read had Taron finding himself outside of the final five (usually at number 7). This was not so much on account of his performance but on timing. Rocketman came out long before the start of Oscar season, and a lot of commentators believed that it’d be overlooked/forgotten by the fall.
However, Paramount is smart. They started an insane awards campaign which had Taron and Dexter doing interview after interview, Q&A after Q&A, talk show appearances, and shaking hands with just about everyone in Hollywood. He campaigned both in the US and the UK, so they covered all their bases. It really was an impressive awards campaign. Lately, commentators have been remarking on this campaign and seem to think it’s impressive and helpful. This campaign did its job; it got Taron back into awards conversations where he was slipping. This has been particularly helpful in his Golden Globes bid. I’ll get into this more later, but as the Globes got closer, it was harder and harder for commentators to discount Taron as an unlikely win as he was, in their view, campaigning so hard.
That brings us to now: awards season. Taron kicked off awards season with some big wins from some smaller organizations (GQ, Attitude, etc.) which was a good sign. It meant his work was not going to go unrewarded. He then got the Hollywood Film Award which is a huge deal. The Hollywood Film Award is not only a prestigious award, but it is also very much in the realm of the Golden Globes, SAG, etc.
Then, the nominations for the big awards came out. He missed the Critics Choice (which is frustrating because there were seven spots), but got the Golden Globe nomination as well as the SAG. I’ll break down why these are both important and for different reasons. I heard early on that Taron was a lock for a Golden Globe nomination, so I wasn’t too worried about it. Despite the super contentious best actor race, most of the competition was in the best drama category, and that left best comedy open. That meant that he could easily get into a top five in that category, and voila he did. While it wasn’t the hardest nomination to score, it was still a huge deal. Taron had never been nominated for a Globe before. Prior to this awards season, he only had one major award nomination and that was from BAFTA. Now, he had a second nomination from a major award association. The SAG, while it may not seem as glossy (as no one really watches the SAGs) is actually hugely important. Members of the Academy are also members of SAG, so from what I understand it is the same voting block (at least for the nomination). So, if Taron was already able to win over that same voting block he needs to get a nomination, then well, he probably will get a nomination.
Prior to the Globes, though, his nomination was not a secure. But that is true of almost everyone except Joaquin and Adam Driver. The Globes would determine who makes it through, and with that win, well, it seems like he has a pretty clear path to an Oscar nomination. Right now, the last Academy voters are turning in their ballots (they have about two more days to do so), and I reckon that Taron, considering he’s now a serious contender, will be on a lot of ballots. Even though the timing of where Oscar voting ends and when the Golden Globes happened are a little off, Taron likely built up enough momentum that he probably already got a lot of votes, and these final two days will give him the push he needs. Now, if he does get the nomination (which likely will at this point), what are his chances of winning? Frankly, he has very stiff competition, and it’s unclear if he’d actually make it to Oscar gold. There are a few things to keep in mind. One, he just beat Leonardo Dicaprio. A commentator on Gold Derby said that this, in a sense, puts Taron ahead of Dicaprio. Two, one commentator said this could put him at a number 3 spot (in terms of the likelihood that he’ll win), and guess who was at number three for the Golden Globes. Friggin Taron. And guess who crossed the finish line. Taron. So, while he’s A) not guaranteed to get a number 3 spot and B) being number three doesn’t guarantee you anything, it does give him a real fighting chance.
All of this begs the question, if Taron is, potentially, at number 3 (and a win really could put him there), who’s number 1 and 2? It’s exactly who think it is: Adam Driver and Joaquin Phoenix. Now, I’ve been of the mind all awards season that this is Adam Driver’s year. He’s put in the time. He got a nomination last year for a performance in a great film (in which he was surely not the stand-out performance). This year, he’s a high profile drama which could win best picture, and he’s the stand-out performance in it. All of that spells out OSCAR GOLD. However, he lacks a narrative. The Oscars love a narrative. For instance, last year’s surprise best actress winner Olivia Coleman also had a narrative. Her narrative was that she was a British actress swimming in British awards and accolades but was new to Hollywood and was just so damn happy to be there. She was the new girl, but a new girl with clout, prestige, experience, and poise. Lupita Nyong’o had a similar but more conventional narrative: she was the breakout star. 12 Years A Slave was her first feature length picture, and she was literally brand-new. She ultimately won multiple awards including the SAG and the Oscar. This is not to suggest that these two actresses won purely based on their narrative and that their incredible performances were not a factor. A narrative can simply give a nominee a boost or even just make their win seem all the more special. So, what’s the point of all of this? It’s basically that Adam Driver doesn’t have a narrative. One can win without a narrative (see Alicia Vikander or Eddie Redmayne). However, in an awards season that is so packed with incredible performances, it helps to have something to stand out, and Adam Driver, as talented as he is, doesn’t really have much to go on. Then, there’s Joaquin. He’s not a friend to the Academy voter or the construct of awards in general, and he’s certainly not a friend to the press. None of that will help him to cross the finish line come Oscar night. So, if Taron only has to beat those two, well, frankly, there is a small possibility that he has the momentum he needs to take him all the way. Despite a lot of love and adoration for Olivia Coleman’s performance, she was not last year’s favorite. Glenn Close seemed like a lock. And then, Olivia Coleman swept in with the win. What gained her that momentum was her campaign. It wasn’t so much that she shook hands with everyone but that she was a genuine personality who was good-humored, good-natured, beloved her peers, and just charming as hell. Who does that sound like? One also has to consider that the best actor/actress in a comedy or musical has, in recent years, been either the number one or the number two. Soarsie Ronan was the clear number 2 in 2018 (and had a serious chance of winning). Olivia Coleman was last year’s number 1. It’s possible that a similar situation could happen again. Right now, nothing is certain. He doesn’t even have the nomination yet, and it is the toughest race in recent years. But no one should completely rule him out just yet.

'With the Oscar race heating up and the SAG and BAFTA awards less than a month away, people are predicting who will take home an Academy Award based on the outcome of these two significant precursors. One of the most intriguing races this year is Best Actor, which includes Oscar nominees Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer“), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers“), Bradley Cooper (“Maestro“), Coleman Domingo (“Rustin“), and Jeffery Wright (“American Fiction“). For the purposes of this article, we’re going to focus on Murphy, Giamatti and Cooper due to Domingo’s film not having a Best Picture nomination and Wright losing the Golden Globe to Giamatti. It’s highly unlikely either rally back to become contenders to win the Oscar at this point.
Cillian Murphy seemed like the surefire winner for the longest time, and it was his award to lose as he has led the precursors all season long. Then, a little film called “The Holdovers” started to creep in on voters’ radar. Now, Paul Giamatti is beginning to gain momentum in the race following wins at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. Suddenly, this has become a two-man race for the Oscar…or has it? Here are some possible scenarios that could lead up to who wins the Oscar on March 10th…
1. Cillian Murphy Sweeps Given how much love “Oppenheimer” has received since its premiere over the summer, this possibility is still in play. Murphy has had to carry the weight of this movie on his back both in production and through the awards campaign. Winning SAG will be more of a challenge than taking the BAFTA, but if he wins both, the Oscar is guaranteed for him.
2. Cillian Murphy Takes BAFTA & Paul Giamatti Takes SAG Paul Giamatti winning the SAG award is more likely because not only was his performance in “The Holdovers” genuinely excellent and appeals broadly to a large group of voters but because it feels like other actors want to show their appreciation for all the work he’s done over the last 30 years years. There may not be a better opportunity than now to acknowledge what a consistent and beloved actor he’s been for many years, whether it’s in the lead or supporting roles. If this happens, the Oscar race will suddenly become tighter between the two men. I would still predict Cillian to take the Oscar since “Oppenheimer” is widely expected to win Best Picture at the moment, but I wouldn’t feel confident about it should this scenario play out.
3. Paul Giamatti Takes BAFTA & Cillian Murphy Takes SAG This one feels like a bit of a stretch, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Giamatti’s dry humor in “The Holdovers” could win over some BAFTA voters, and Murphy could win SAG based on the popularity of “Oppenheimer” alone. This would make Oscar night pretty interesting, even more so than the previous scenario, making the race neck and neck between the two actors. Still, given SAG’s track record correlation with the Academy’s winners, I imagine this would benefit Murphy by a tiny margin...'

Brutal honesty about Oscar
To be brutally honest in return, what stands out about how this person voted (and they’re not hugely different from other people in this series) is both how political and how petty a lot of it is. Surprisingly little has to do with what they think was “best” or most affecting about a nominee in a particular category. And the rah-rah nationalist bites are quite unexpected and eyebrow-raising.
Brutally Honest Oscar Ballot: 'Irishman' "Was Boring," Tarantino "Amazing," "I Want an American Director to Win" (hollywoodreporter.com)
5:00 PM 2/4/2020 by Anonymous, as told to Scott Feinberg
As voting ends, a female member of the Academy's actors branch, granted anonymity to speak freely, shares which films earn her precious vote (and — gulp — why).
Best Picture: [...] I didn't care about any of the people in [The Irishman]. I really liked Ford v Ferrari — I loved the two actors and the moral of the story — and I wish they had promoted it more; it's worthy of more attention than it has gotten. Parasite is beautifully done, but it didn't hold up the second time, and I don't think foreign films should be nominated with the regular films. I liked Joker more than I thought I would; I put off seeing it for a long time, but it was actually a beautifully done film about mental illness, and I thought about it for a long time afterward, which is always a good sign. I loved 1917, but Quentin Tarantino's film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was even better the second time than the first. I was in L.A. in the '60s, and I thought he captured that era perfectly. 1917 was a very good but pretty straight-on story about the horrors of war; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was more complicated and stayed with me longer. MY VOTE (1) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; (2) 1917; (3) Joker; (4) Parasite; (5) Ford v Ferrari; (6) The Irishman; (7) Marriage Story; (8) Jojo Rabbit; (9) Little Women
[EDITOR’S NOTE: For “Best Picture” -- and only for that category -- the Academy uses a ranked preference ballot, and assigns values based on that rank. If any film receives an outright majority of first-place votes (which appears not to have happened any time recently), then the vote count is complete. Otherwise ... things get complicated quickly:  How the Oscars preferential ballot turns the best picture race into a celebration of the ‘least disliked’ (latimes.com)]
Best Director: I can't vote for Marty [Scorsese, of The Irishman] — nobody wants to say it, but it's just not that good. Todd Phillips did an incredible job on Joker, as did Bong Joon Ho on Parasite, but not the best. I liked 1917 and Sam Mendes' direction, but I thought Quentin did a great job, and I want an American director to win. The Oscars is an American thing; English things win BAFTAs and the French vote for the French, and Quentin Tarantino should be honored for a great American movie.MY VOTE Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
[EDITOR’S NOTE: It’s one thing to say that Quentin did a great job -- that’s a comment on quality. It’s another thing, and rather eyebrow-raising, to say that it should only go to an American director. Apart from anything else, in the specific examples she cites, those awards do in fact nominate people from outside their nationality, and did this year. All that said, for an even more bracing look at who may win Best Director and why:  6 reasons why ‘1917’ is destined to march to 2020 Oscar glory as Best Picture (goldderby.com), in which the reason for their prediction is simply, “Testosterone”.]
Other “Brutally Honest Oscar Ballots” from years past.
For a less deeply cynical (and very different) take on this year’s Oscars:  Three anonymous Oscar voters share their super-secret ballots in key categories (latimes.com). I will note that the opinions expressed in this article may make it less surprising if Scarlet Johanssen can pull off a major upset by beating out Renee Zellwegger for best actress, and if “Knives Out” manages to edge “Parasite” for original screenplay (... although I fully expect both of them to lose to Tarantino, so.):
WRITER, woman in her 40s
Original screenplay: It was between “Parasite” and “Knives Out” for me, but Rian [Johnson] writes one hell of a screenplay. Not a word wasted, rich characters, plenty of twists and an exceedingly original idea. I watch Rian’s movies for the immersive worlds he creates, big or small, and for the new language he seems to create for every single movie. That always starts with the script....
And for a return to cynicism about what happened and why:  Oscar Ballots Due Today As Academy Quells Tweetstorm Over Glitch In New AMPAS “Prediction” Site (deadline.com) in which it appeared briefly as though the Academy -- which, after all, actually knows the winners ahead of time -- was “predicting” the results of the awards. That’s apparently not exactly what was happening, but given the various issues the academy has had to deal with this year and in recent years, it is, shall we say, not at all a good look for them.
