Book 18 of 2024
The Witch's Ladder by Wendy Wang
We revisit Charlie and her family once more in this book. This one gives a much broader look at the magic system in their world, as well as introducing another love interest for Charlie's cousin Jen, who is my second favorite character so far. We also get a good look at the consequences of their magic system as well. I loved the deeper dive into the magic world outside their family (at least that wasn't ghost driven ex. book 3) I quite liked Tom's moments in these, and am liking the natural build of his and Charlie's relationship. I missed the acerbic whit of Jason in this one, but he seems to be falling into the background and that's okay. Also, Penny the chicken is awesome.

A Tale for the Time Being – Ruth Ozeki book review
Tumblr media
I don’t know how to describe what I’m feeling right now. After completing this book I’m left with a storm in my chest, Ruth Ozeki wrote a touching and unforgettable story. It was funny and tragic at the same time, and a lot of times very harrowing and so gut wrenching that I had to put the book down and stop for a couple minutes.
In this book we follow two stories at the same time but not actually. Ruth is a novelist living in a remote island who one day discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox, there she finds the diary of sixteen-year-old Nao who lives in Tokyo. As Ruth continues to read Nao’s diary she plunges into the life of a young girl who’s bullied by her classmates and has an unemployed suicidal father. Nao’s voice is funny, quirky and deep while she talks about life and death, quantum physics and Buddhist nuns. We go from one story line to the other, back and forth between past and present, and so we find ourselves wanting to know what’s going to happen at the end.
A Tale for the Time Being is a beautiful story with touching characters, compelling narrative that is equally magical and wise. It may make you bit sad but it’s a story worth reading.

So I’ve been terrible at posting here about my reading. But I’ve been logging daily on Goodreads. I friggin love that app. Maybe I’ll whip up a recap of some kind of everything I’ve read since I kinda spaced on this blog.
First I’ve gotta finish my current read. My eyes aren’t feeling tired yet and I’m close enough to the end I can probably finish it before I pass out for the night

Fascinating! I keep meeting people in some sort of engineering major that have a passion for creating music. Is this just a coincidence?
who knows 😭 i personally dont know anyone like me. if society didnt treat musicians/art jobs like shit i would very likely be in the field, but im good at math (and science), i like problem solving, and engineering has a good job outlook so im here instead.

Book 11 of 2024
The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates
A phenomenal read that feels like watching Rose Red for the first time. I like the building tension in this book, both the setting and the between characters. This has the author's stereotypical villain reveal about three quarters through, but is written so well that it didn't bother me. I do like how her heroines tend to not be shrinking violets, but was mildly annoyed that the 32 year female side character was called old and desperate, as me, myself, am older than that. 😅 I also love the absolute clash of personalities between the cast of characters. I do wish the author had given a bit more outside the house description, but am satisfied either way.
