What methods/sites would you recommend using for reading Arcs 5-8 of Re:Zero?

I’ve almost finished season 2 of the anime, and I’m pretty sure this has become one of my new favourite anime/works of media in general.

And considering I keep spoiling myself anyway when I look at Re: Zero tumblr blogs, I figured I should just find a way to catch up with the rest of the series.

You seem smart, and have clearly read Arcs 5-8, so I was hoping that you would be able to provide some advice.

hi there!! :D no worries for the ask, its cool to have another rezero fan join in the fandom especially on tumblr (which is a very small, curated circle of a bunch of us trading posts around a campfire HAH) and i hope youve really been enjoying the anime and your stay here so far!! :o this is absolutely one of my favorite media as well (if. if you couldnt tell by the blog pfft) and thanks for the compliments haah i am glad to seem smart.

but yes i gotchu on where to read!! ill be giving you a pretty detailed explanation/guide. (this explanation also goes mainly for english speakers / people who wanna experience rezero in english.) (and of course if any other seasoned fans are seeing this feel free to add on if i miss anything or correct me if needed)

Main Route Stuff:

witchculttranslations is where you can find the translations for the entire main route (which is arcs 1-8). this page is where youll find the main table of contents for each arc and you can find arcs 5-8 there!

note that arc 8, at the time of me writing this ask, is still a work-in-progress and the team of translators in this fandom are always hard at work to translate each chapter. also note that arcs 7-8 are "conjoined arcs" - think of it like arc 7 is part 1 and arc 8 is part 2. so if you happen to get caught up to where rezero is currently at, the rezero subreddit regularly updates chat + update threads whenever new rezero novel content comes out in general. youll find updates on translations or summaries for new chapters there.

there's also distinction between web novel and light novel - web novel are the chapters that tappei releases online, light novel are the official finished versions of the chapters that are released for sale. sometimes there's changes between the web novel and the light novel, but for the most part it's either minor changes to improve on the web novel - sometimes it's major, but for arcs 5-8 iirc there isnt any major changes that you need to worry about.

just note that in the wn translations, all/almost all dialogue is written in script-style. let me show a small excerpt from arc 5 chapter 1:

???: “Good job, Subaru, I suppose.” A small silhouette enters Subaru’s view from above. A loveable girl with long, cream hair and an extravagant outfit—Beatrice. Her fluttering dress looks out of place in the meadow as she presents Subaru with a towel. He accepts it and vigorously towels his head dry. Subaru: “Ah, thanks. Was looking to cool down so this’s perfect.”

so yeah the wn will be formatted like this by the way, just in case you didnt know this yet!! i hope thats not much of a turnoff or anything, but dont worry you get used to it - and the story is still pretty great anyway!!

also dont bother with arcs 1-3 wn. its not so important (and you already know all the major info because youve seen the anime) and also arcs 1-3 wn doesnt have the Best writing. tappei himself had to make extremely major changes for the light novel and the light novel (along with the anime and manga) is the finished and polished result.

and of course the light novel comes with illustrations for each arc. the web novel sometimes includes images as well at the beginning of each chapter, but if youd like to see finished and official illustrations for various scenes throughout arc 5-8 its easy to find them if you search them up online!!

the anime also has a few bits of Important cut content from arcs 3-4 - unfortunately i dont have any resources on hand for this ;-;;; but you can look this up on rezero reddit or online in general since a lot of people have made summaries about this. from what i remember in arc 3 (which is the royal selection/white whale/petelgeuse half of season 1!), the main thing is just the reveal that al has some sort of connection to ram (and rem by extension), some sort of connection to satella possibly, and he is ALSO someone that was isekaied into rezero's fantasy world.

as for arc 4 (which is season 2 of course), the anime got down almost all of the general important info you need to know, but there's a lot of important information in the last parts of arc 4 that the anime didnt include. the anime may include this information (and the al stuff from arc 3) later, but you'll need to know it for arcs 5-8. you can find the witchcultranslations guide for arc 4 here - scroll down and youll find the chapter called Appendix: Advent!! you'll need the info in that chapter for later.

if you want, you can also read the chapters after that - theyre sorted under One Day II and are the official arc 4 interludes that take place before arc 5. i do recommend reading through them, but theyre mainly characterization stuff, character dynamics post-arc 4, everyone trying to recover after arc 4, etc etc. the most important info in there is leadup for arc 5 (all the post-arc 4 aftermath stuff) and also some info/introduction on clind and annerose (who are characters that are briefly shown in the anime for like two seconds). these two do play minor roles in arc 4/beginning of 5, but theyre hinted to be important for later. if youre in a hurry to get to arc 5, totally fine to just skim through it, get basic info on clind and annerose then continue into arc 5 or something. or you can look at their wiki pages - totally cool to enjoy rezero however you wish. it's a LOT of reading dont get me wrong HAH.

as for the manga - this is not required reading or anything, the manga has only done arcs 1-4 atm so it's not really super relevant to you since youre almost done with arc 4 already via the anime!! but of course if you havent done so youre welcome to check it out if youd like, the manga artists are pretty great imo. im just gonna show some art from the manga artists here:

anyway thats it for main route content!! now i gotta explain side content.

Side Content:

you can find witchculttranslations' side story table of contents here, which very neatly shows you Every Single Side Story and is updated regularly every time tappei comes out with new side content. and trust me, tappei makes A Lot of side content. i guarantee you a lot of rezero fans havent read every side story (and i still have a lot of side stories to catch up on myself), so theres absolutely no need to read every single side story!! honestly just read the ones you find interesting + the ones that are required reading! im not sure how much of the side content youve heard about, but ill give you a rundown:

this extremely helpful google spreadsheet here (thats also regularly updated) tells you how important each side story is and where you can find it so you dont have to go on a wild goose chase wondering which ones you need to read for the main story. rezero side stories are on a sliding scale of just silly stuff tappei wrote for fun to this is VERY crucial for the main story. that google spreadsheet should help you out with that - both the spreadsheet and witchculttranslations have links to almost every side story available.

(the spreadsheet also tells you important details and who it's centered around + when each side story is safe to read free of spoilers after a certain point - so it's easy to decide when you wanna read the side stories and WHICH side stories you'd like to read!)

also i guarantee you that if you have a favorite character in rezero that character Probably has a ton of side content theyre featured in - so i recommend just hunting down all their side content and devouring it whole because im sure youll have a fun time with that. a lot of side content also fleshes out a ton of side characters as well in general - people who Looked shallow in the anime ARENT shallow at all, i promise. many people have hidden depths, which is one of the fun parts of rezero!

witchculttranslations and the google spreadsheet also tell you what order you might wanna read in terms of when each one takes place. i recommend following that order for the most part if youd like, but if you wanna binge read side content or something later you can also do that after reading arc 6.

that's how i experienced the side stories myself (i started reading them after finishing up with the arcs 5-6 plot) and in a way, i would say that might just be the easiest way to do it given a lot of the side stories take place during arcs 1-6 or before the events of arcs 1-6. itll make you go "ohhh thats what was happening with these background characters during *insert event here that was focused on in the main story*" or "ohhh thats why These Guys are like this" a lot pfft. so its easier to just get out the most important ones / the ones thatre most interesting to you all in a row after finishing up with arc 6 👍

The Ex Novels:

these are THE MOST IMPORTANT side stories. :o theyll be extremely important for arcs 7-8 especially!! also because these are light novels the dialogue is written in normal narrative format so hooray for that!!

anyway theres five ex novels. i recommend reading these after arc 6 so you got them fresh on the brain for arcs 7-8.

however if you happen to be a crusch camp fan, you can read ex novels 1-3 at any time youd like!! these flesh out characters like crusch, felix, wilhelm, and theresia (some of the wilhelm and theresia content was shown a bit in season 1 of the anime!) so youd probably enjoy these even more if youre a fan of any of them. ex novel four also features felix, julius, and reinhard too, if that interests you! (as a knight fan ex novel 4 was my favorite akdndn and i loved ex 1!!). but yeah in general though read the ex novels in order (from 1 to 5 of course) so you dont spoil yourself for other ex novels, but as i said - you can read 1-3 at any time, and in general its best to read the rest of the ex novels after arc 6.

the ex novels in general mainly focus on important historical events in the rezero world and stuff that happens before arc 1. the ex novels are also our first introduction to the nation and empire of vollachia—this is also the country that priscilla is from (and al also came from there)!! you get introduced to vollachia's whole deal in these novels. youll need this info for later!

anyway witchculttranslations and the google sheet dont have links to them because theyre published + officially translated light novels that are easiest to access by buying them, so harder to get a free pdf of them. however i got you (and your wallet) covered because i got pdfs for all of them right here (if these links dont work let me know!):

ex novel 1 - crusch and felix-centric

ex novel 2 - wilhelm and theresia-centric

ex novel 3 - wilhelm and theresia-centric

ex novel 4 - felix, julius, and reinhard-centric

ex novel 5 - priscilla and al-centric

anyway thats the ex novels in a nutshell!! and of course if you want a physical copy of these books (or any of the rezero light novels in general) in english you can buy these online (sites like amazon has them) or at a bookstore. if you live in the US like i do, barnes and noble has them irl as well. or if you happen to live near a kinokuniya store, they also sell rezero irl. kinokuniya is also specifically for japanese media so i highly recommend giving it a try if you happen to be near one (i got a rezero keychain from there also hah, rezero merch is a little hard to get a hold of sometimes).

rezero light novels are also translated in a few other languages (iirc spanish and polish are some of the other languages its translated in) so if youd like that too you can look into it and buy some!!

The If Routes:

if youre not familiar with these by now, theyre basically "what if"/ alternate universe stories where subaru makes a different and Very Major choice at different points of the main route. theyre not necessarily required reading, but some do have some important lore regarding several of the characters and in general most of them are extremely important AUs for rezero that emphasize all the themes of the story. they also show the Insane butterfly effect of subaru’s decisions.

and if youve gotten this far with the anime already im gonna assume you probably like subaru at least a little bit? :o yeah his character gets fleshed out in Very Interesting ways in these routes. other characters also get changed in various ways due to his decisions!

new ifs are also released typically every year on subaru's birthday - april 1. so with every april 1 the entire fandom plays russian roulette because either the if will be a super silly one or a Very Important one LMAO.

also these ifs tend to be mentioned a lot in fandom bc theyre very beloved and interesting side stories, so i highly recommend choosing which ones you find interesting and just have fun reading them!! you can find them on the spreadsheet, if you want to read them in a more chronological order, or you can find them on the main witchculttranslations website as tabs on the side underneath Re:Zero If Stories. (but ill provide the links to each separate one in this post also.)

all current if routes at the moment take place somewhere in the arcs 1-6 range, so you can look at them either after arc 6, like i said, or in order as you read along with the main route. ill give a quick breakdown of each if just in case!!

Pride If - diverges from arc 1; subaru doesnt call for help when fighting the three thugs in the alleyway. slight spoilers for one part of arc 5 in like One Scene of pride if.

Wrath If - diverges from arc 2; subaru accepts beatrice’s offer to help in the loop where rem dies + subaru tries to run away from the mansion. very minor spoilers for ex novels/arc 7-8 (characters who appear in those arcs appear in wrath if).

Sloth If - diverges from arc 3; subaru gives up and runs away with rem instead of dealing with the arc 3 conflict. very minor spoilers (a character who later appears in arc 8 appears here).

Aganau If - diverges from arc 3; in the loop where rem dies in the cave and subaru carries her back to the mansion, he decides to go down another route away from the mansion instead. years later, he’s now older and still alive after almost everyone else has died. this if is one of the routes in the now discontinued lost in memories mobile game (and this is The Most Important route out of the whole bunch anyway). you can find a playthrough + english translation of it here.

Greed If - diverges from arc 4; subaru accepts echidna’s contract. major spoilers for arc 4 of course. minor spoilers for arc 5+ (small plot beats are mentioned iirc). a bit of important lore for characters like echidna and clind. the first edition of it can be found here - make sure to read this first. this is because this if was also given a longer and polished light novel version of it (it was a special that came with some of the season 2 blueray dvd packages?) and you can find an english translation for the extended + final version under the Blueray Novels and Databooks section of witchculttranslations' side content page.

Gluttony If - diverges from arc 6. major spoilers for arcs 5-6.

Mimigau If - this is just a genderbend au that tappei made that starts from arc 1!! almost nothing is changed besides the characters’ genders, biological sex, names, etc. i sadly dont have a link to this one, but iirc this hasnt been fully translated yet? and it's also very much not that important of an if lore-wise so you're not missing out on much. the genderbent character names are really fun though!

Lust If - this is, supposedly, an if that tappei wrote in one sitting and then decided to delete off of the official rezero wn site. this if is just an april fools joke where subaru gets a harem of various rezero girls. and imo its not Particularly Good, but it was meant to be a joke and tappei just wrote it for no reason so ig the quality makes sense haah. and also sadly that harem includes petra iirc which. yeah. not what id call great.

Vainglory If / School If - basically a canon high school au for all of rezero! not a necessary read at all but it's super silly and fun. and if you like anastasia and/or priscilla they have a lot of Fun Interactions in this one. im not sure if all of this if is english translated yet, but you can find chapter one here.

Other Various Ifs from Lost In Memories - i dont have the links to all of these, but lost in memories has a lot of other more minor aus as well, aganau if is just the most important + the darkest one. the other ifs are more lighthearted and just extra stuff for funsies. other big examples include a julius if (subaru calls for help in arc 1 and julius is the one who comes to help), a reinhard if of sorts (takes place around arcs 1-2, it's a sillier story where reinhard just keeps appearing out of nowhere to help subaru every time he needs help), and also an otto if (arc 1 divergence; subaru gets involved with otto and the two of them decide to start a mayonnaise business).

A Side Note About Rezero Video Games:

ok i know your ask is mainly about how to READ rezero but i figured i might as well explain this really quick just in case!!

there are a bunch of rezero video games and none of them are really Necessary, so dont worry about it. theyre either like - silly alternate universe stuff or theyre a bit more of the serious au variety (like aganau if, as mentioned earlier. i dont know every single rezero video game out there (and i think theres still new ones in the works at the time of me writing this??) and also almost none of them are english translated so its hard to experience them if you dont understand japanese.

the two most important ones (aka the ones with more story in them) are gonna be prophecy of the throne and lost in memories (which i mentioned earlier!). and again, these games are not necessary content - theyre mostly just side content that you can look at/watch/play through for fun and if you just wanna see more of your faves. you can check them out at any time since they dont have any major arc 5-8 spoilers.

Prophecy of the Throne - this is visual novel + a divergence of arc 3 where a new and sixth royal candidate emerges and it looks like emilia is the fake royal candidate here.... so yeah the plot is just. it's like a game of among us. but it's a fun story with a lot of different character interactions (so if you really like the entire cast of rezero youre in luck!!) and features a tiny bit of lore about some powerful groups in the fantasy world. a few of subarus failed loops in this one are also Particularly Brutal. you can watch gameplay of it on youtube or play through it yourself (i know that the game IS on steam too) since it's fully english translated (and all the jp vas and english vas reprised their roles as well).

Lost In Memories - as mentioned earlier, this is a now discontinued mobile game. iirc it was a gacha game? a sort of fighting game? and also it's narrative driven with a bunch of different routes. you can find the wiki for it here - it summarizes a lot of the main story beats. theres no official english translations for this game, but theres a lot of fan translations that you can find on stuff like youtube if youre ever interested in any part of the game. also it has a really fun opening song and animated sequence. nonoc's rezero music is great <3

A Side Note About Rezero Youtube:

theres a lot of summary videos for both main content chapters and side stories on youtube. im not sure how accurate these videos are, but i know that at the very least they can give you a brief rundown on the main points for certain chapters/side stories if thats something youd like to have!

theres also an entire team of people making a fan-run audiobook for arc 5. ive given some of their episodes a listen, and i can confirm that theyre absolutely great. you can find their readings of chapter 1-47 on spotify, and on their youtube channel theyre up to chapter 62. i think theyve also expressed their interest in branching out into other rezero content as well? :o so if thats also something youre interested in you can check them out there!

In Conclusion

anyway, that should be all you need to know - thats a summary of basically all important rezero content from here on out!! i know this is like. vines I am staring at your MY canon divergence au and would love to hear more about it!!!

OKAY SO.

This AU exists for two main reasons:

1.) A lot of fix-it fic for JGY seems to focus on him being "saved" from his canon fate via romantic relationship, and that simply doesn't cut it for me. You really want to free him from the destructive weight of his misplaced filial piety in a way that doesn't just handwave it all away? You save his mom. You save his mom and enable them both to know JGS is a lost cause from the get-go and give them the means to forge a different path.

2.) WQ and MY are my faves and I want them to hang out!

As I said, I will almost certainly not write the whole thing out. I did post the inciting portion where MY actually arriving in Qishan and WQ starts treating MS, but as you can see, I did not finish it over the summer as intended, because I am the world's slowest writer. But I think about the ways it could go a lot! It's a little thing--just pushing a canonical event earlier in the timeline and changing the impetus--but it has SUCH impact. Aside from what I mentioned in the tags of that other post:

-MY no longer has any ties to Qinghe. He and NMJ can still clash (since MY is for all intents and purposes a Wen), but it's not personal in quite the same "I lived in your household for a substantial amount of time" sort of way

-WQ has someone she can talk to who's in similar straits! This is all based on CQL canon foremost, and what's striking to me about her is that she never gets to be a kid. Even at Cloud Recesses, while her peers are having a silly goofy time, she's on high alert doing WRH's work. WN's behavior suggests that he knows the vibe is weird, but he doesn't seem to understand exactly how fucked things are, which in turn implies that WQ is deliberately shielding him from it. That's so much stress that she's bottling up! With MY there in the same situation of abetting atrocities to protect beloved family members, at least she has someone to confide in (while their situations are juuuust different enough to conflict).

-MENG SHI REACTS TO: EVERYTHING. Those five sentences of information about her are so interesting. She's clever! She's shrewd! She's also compassionate, I feel, because MY had to get his altruism and his loyalty to those who show him kindness from SOMEWHERE, and he certainly didn't get it from his dad, WRH, or anyone else he grew up with. I have a whole backstory for her that I cannot write because hooo boy the effort required would not be worth the reward, but I want so much to explore how she'd respond to the fucked-up situation of being beholden to the Evil Regime. On the one hand, she knows the Wen clan under WRH are doing horrible things, and I don't think that would sit well with her. On the other hand... MY inherited his survival drive from somewhere, too. What does MS feel she owes to society when that society abused and degraded her?

-MS and WQ would also have some things to talk about on the "making great sacrifices for family" front, I think.

-Less seriously, XY meets MS and probably calls her a slur to be edgy, and she hits him right back but in a way that he finds fun rather than takes personally, and now she's on XY's list of People He'll Murder For On The Slightest Provocation.

-MY and/or MS might know about the core transfer and that sure is a fun piece of information for more people not named Jiang Cheng to possess!

-I think MS gets to date WZL firstly on account of WZL being a total catch who respects smart women going by his ??? with YZY, secondly on account of them both getting a lot of shit from society for their work (though the one who voluntarily disables people for a living is treated more respectfully by far bc this is a horrible garbage world!), and thirdly because MS is going to have to bear witness to Xiyao and Chengqing and she deserves something for herself there.

-I mentioned "what about after the war?" in the tags of that other post, but ahhh the Optimal Outcome here fixes EVERYTHING. JGS offers to legitimize MY. MY kind of wants to tell him to fuck himself, but realizes that his and MS are in a highly unstable position and he needs to go all-out on convincing people He Was A Good Guy All Along. (WQ and WN don't have that luxury with their Wen surname.) He accepts on the condition that prisoners are treated with mercy and MS is also granted security. JGS provides exactly neither of these things, as MS is either shunted off to a prison camp with the Wen remnants or she's isolated within Jinlintai as a means to keep MY compliant. How do we solve this? Unclear! Maybe XY finds out JGS is being a dick to Meng Shi, A Person He Likes, and he impales him about it. Regardless, we have MY and the Jiang sibs (plus Jiang-in-law Zixuan) all conspiring together, and in an ideal scenario, I believe in them.

-There are also a lot of sad messed-up ways this could go, but. I do not want it to this time. At least not for my two faves and MS. Everyone else........ debatable.

Again, I cannot stress enough that this is not ever going to be an actual longfic. I have written one (1) longfic ever and it was three years ago and not even that long. But it has POTENTIAL.

Some kind of part 2 to this one

This was an incredibly funny piece to write, shoutout to Lan Jingyi for seeing a business opportunity and running with it.

Wei Wuxian rushes through the Cloud Recesses, Suibian in hand, unsheathed - and that never happens unless there is a great emergency somewhere that he knows he can't fix with just Chenqing. There are very few such instances - one was when Lan Sizhui got kidnapped, and another was when some poor sod put a curse on Lan Wangji, and to this day nobody knows or dares ask what happened to either of those people. So to see the Yiling Patriarch (who's usually just fun and mischievous Wei-qianbei) exude murderous intent, everyone makes way for him to storm out of the Cloud Recesses without issue. Not that they're scared he'd kill them - but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Lan Wangji struggles to catch up to him, and that's saying something. "Wei Ying!"

"Leave me alone, I'm going to kill this Yan Bai person myself! How dare he!"

"Wei Ying!" Lan Wangji tries again, finally reaching close enough to his husband to get a hold of his shoulder.

"What?! You've seen those ridiculous drawings and read those horrible stories too! Aren't you supposed to be righteous?!"

Lan Wangji is not going to take offense to that and he's not going to fight with Wei Ying in the middle of the Cloud Recesses where everybody can see. In fact, there won't be any fight at all.

"You can't kill Yan Bai."

"Like hell I can't, I've killed hundreds, what's one more!"

"We'll circle to that later, but the reason you can't kill him it's because he doesn't exist!"

Wei Ying blinks at his husband incredulously. "Lan Zhan, do you take me for a fool? What do you mean he doesn't exist? Then who created that ludicrous sexy Ghost General calendar? The fanfiction subscription service? The fan letters?!"

Lan Wangji sighs like the weight of the world rests on his shoulders. "Come with me, I'll tell you in private. And please put Suibian away."

Inside the jingshi, Wen Ning and Jingyi await. Now, Wei Ying is even more confused than before, joining Lan Wangji at the table. He takes a seat, and says, "Wei Ying, please meet Yan Bai." as he elegantly gestures towards Jingyi, who looks very much like Wen Ning down - a living corpse.

There is such tense silence in the jingshi that it feels suffocating. Jingyi has long accepted he's going to die today, he's said his goodbyes and even sent a last letter roasting Jin Ling express shipping to Jinlintai. All his affairs are in order, might as well get it over with.

"How much money did you make?" Wei Ying asks, his voice flat and neutral, and somehow scarier than when he's angry.

"I... Double my allowance, sir."

"Per month?"

"Per week... sir."

Wei Ying whistles lowly. "What did you spend it on?"

Lan Jingyi keeps quiet, eyes stubbornly squeezed closed.

"Well?"

"I cannot say."

"Why not?"

"It is forbidden."

Wei Ying rolls his eyes. "So is drawing porn, yet here you are."

"It's not - porn... it's-"

"Erotic art, whatever, same thing. I would know. So, where's the dough?"

"..."

"Lan Jingyi."

"We're saving up for something! It's - well, a surprise..."

"And you've decided to exploit Wen Ning for it?"

"It's not... exploiting. It's a... business. I overheard some people talking about him in a certain way and had an idea..."

The new information is nothing short of surprising, so Wei Ying turns to his friend. "Wen Ning, did you know about this?"

"...somewhat. Not to its full extent, but I agreed to the- stories."

"So then what's the big project that had you sell yourself out like this?"

"Please don't say that... I didn't... do that."

Wei Ying crosses his arms, raising an eyebrow. "I don't know, Wen Ning, I received a letter from Yunmeng-"

If Wen Ning could blush, he'd be beet red. "I didn't do anything for cash, I mean... all that you've heard about, I've done it... um, for fun..."

Wei Ying sighs so deeply he feels like he's taken up the whole air in the jingshi. This conversation is terribly embarrassing and he still wants to know what the hell they're saving up for.

"Here's how it's gonna go. Jingyi, you tell me what you've been investing in all this time, and I'll convince Hanguang-Jun over here not to punish you for the next 15 years."

Jingyi steals a look towards Wen Ning, and they seem to be having a silent conversation before Jingyi finally looks up at his seniors.

"We've been - the lotus pond we've been nursing in the Cloud Recesses died last spring, and we know how sad that made you. So we bought a piece of a lake near Caiyi and have hired someone specialized in lotus cultivation to help maintain them and make sure they don't die out like last time." A pitiful sigh, "But they're really expensive, even with all the help we got from Jinlintai... Jin Ling can't just give money out right now, so we had to... be creative. We actually got the idea at the last discussion conference, sect leader Nie dropped something about Yiling Laozu fanfiction selling really well in the past and, well..."

Wei Ying can do nothing but stare. Everyone - the kids, Wen Ning, even Nie Huaisang - all contributed to this one project that's more time-consuming than anything and that takes up a whole lot of money... and all that because he cried over the lotuses that dried up last spring instead of blooming. All that because they wanted him to be... happy.

He stands up from his seat abruptly, and Jingyi squeezes his eyes shut again, awaiting deliverance - instead he finds himself and Wen Ning pulled into a hug.

"Thank you."

Jingyi's eyes widen. "You're... not mad?"

"I am very mad. I married into this super rich sect for you lot to go sell porn for money?!"

"Wei-gongzi, it's not-"

"Quiet, Wen Ning! You should've just asked Lan Zhan for cash!"

"With all due respect, Hanguang-Jun is not adept at keeping secrets from you..."

"...fair. Still, all this was... a bit too much. Even if I appreciate it, it's not okay to do. So, there will be some kind of punishment for you, Jingyi."

"I know..." and he begins reciting, "...for lying, keeping secrets, making illicit money, drawing and reading pornographic material, distributing said material, pricing highly, not reporting earnings..."

"That's a long list of crimes to atone for. I'll leave Hanguang-Jun to do that. Wen Ning, come talk to me outside?"

"Yes."

"How do you feel... about all that?" Wei Ying asks as they stroll along the pathways around the jingshi. "The... materials, I mean."

"To be entirely honest... I am not that upset... You know I have not been very confident before... and this, surprisingly, helps a lot."

"Don't you feel... I don't know, objectified?"

A shrug. "Not really. Sure, it's a bit... weird to see so much... erotic material about me, but it's better than people calling for my death..."

Wei Ying sends him a sympathetic look. He wishes people could see him like that, kind and loving and soft, the way he truly is - nothing like the monster people accuse him to be.

"And anyway... I'm not entirely innocent either... so I'm not surprised there is, um, demand for such things."

"Right... uh, you should probably be a bit more on the down low with that in Yunmeng... I know people from there are really attractive but...like, I'm not trying to police what you do or anything-"

"It is fine, I understand what you mean." A conspirational smile. "I was planning to visit Qinghe next anyway, so you probably will not be receiving any more angry letters, hopefully... Though I must admit Hanguang-Jun's response was... quite hilarious."

Wei Ying chuckled. "He got the 'no bitches?' thing from Jingyi, which is why I think he won't punish the kid that harshly... but how do you feel about what he's done?"

"Well. It is... a bit excessive... but... I cannot say the idea is bad... I did get some of the proceedings myself after all..."

"Man, you guys have a whole business going on! Next thing you'll tell me is Sizhui's keeping the books or something."

"..."

"Wen Ning."

"..."

"WEN NING!"

Alright that’s it, got tired of people bitching about Lilith. So, lets get into the deep dive, shall we?

It is well known (in the WN fandom, at least) that Lilith is the first wife of Adam, expulsed from Eden after she refused to submit to him. She then partnered up with the Archangel Samael, head of the Satans, which is probably the Adriel equivalent of the Bible.

(Yes, we could have guessed that they would fuck. It was literally written for thousands of years.)

There are many versions of Lilith, of course, as with everything, but she is very often referred to as a demon of the night, often very hot, with long hair and wings (no I am not making this up).

I think the scene where she goes to see her family is very important. You don’t give your character a butterfly shirt if some shit is not about to happen. I think it’s also well thought, because this puts her even more as the opposite of Ava. Something got shoved into her (the halo vs tarask claw), she came back to life, now she has powers that she didn’t ask for and don’t know how to control, or just generally why. Why her. Both went to Jillian for answers but couldn’t be helped. Both went back to where it all started, Lilith’s family and Ava’s orphanage. I didn’t really go well for either of them. After wandering for a bit, Ava went back to the OCS, even after what Superion and Lilith did to her. She found someone there who believed in her and supported her, so she stayed, and became what they needed her to be.

It was probably added after the fact, but it has been showned that Lilith got Ava, Beatrice and Camila away from Adriel in the last scene of s1. That means Lilith also left Mary there to die. Imagine how much that must have fucked her up. I too would be hesitant to show up at the OCS. She can’t go back there, and that “other side”, the one that would reflect Ava’s journey, is Adriel. So she went to him, and he believed in her and supported her. She became what he needed her to be.

This new Lilith is becoming more and more like the Lilith from the myths. Thing is, that character is… evil? And there are hints in season 2 to her becoming more like that. First, Lilith is supposed to have some sort of control on wind and storms. Adriel says in their first meeting that the storm around them was made by Lilith, but he also makes wind in his final fight with Ava? It’s hard to know if he was making that first storm to manipulate her, or if Lilith really was making a storm without meaning to.

When Lilith is chasing Vincent early in the season, we are presented with this beautiful mural. I had to ask some friends, some say its just some art that was on the wall, some say it’s a mural that was made for the show. I decided to go with that last idea, simply because of the drawing on the right (and it’s more fun this way).

Lilith, according to pretty much everything she appears in, is a baby killer. Which, huh, isn’t great! She kills newborn babies, or sometimes pregnant people, or sometimes just people in general. And that graffiti, seen while Vincent is being chased by Lilith, feels kind of on purpose.

(If you’re asking about the other character drawn, I can only hope that this is Adriel’s hairy ass, a demon with a nicer mask, but I have big doubts about that. I think it’s Asmodeus, and we’re about to meet him in s3, cause Lilith is also seen as his queen in some writings, and wouldnt that be cool?!)

I have been obsessively reading on Lilith since I watched the season, and I remember reading somewhere that Lilith has a realm, somewhere, according to Something. But I cannot find it again, so this is all pulled out of my ass, don’t take this for gold. But I’m pretty sure I read somewhere about Lilith having a realm, and leading hordes of demons. If I did really saw that and it wasn’t a fever dream, then I really hope that’s the way Warrior Nun goes.

At the end of s2, Lilith doesn’t have any desire to kill Ava, and some people were confused by that. For me, it’s just a big parallel to the end of s1. Lilith is constantly there to try (and fail) to stop Ava from Doing Something. Back then it was from freeing Adriel, now it was to stop him from using Reya’s power. Adriel hinted about a divine war, a devourer of world coming, and it make sense to think that he would have told all of that to Lilith. She’s smart, if she knows what’s coming and know that Adriel is gone, then she also knows that she might need Ava in the future. Who knows what’s coming! Not me! Even Lilith didn’t know if they would be on the same side. It would be stupid to kill someone that you might need later.

It’s is particularly funny to see people complain that she “turned evil”, considering Lilith has always been Bad. First scene we see her, and she’s waiting for Shanon to die so that she can take the Halo. She then tries to kill Ava to take the Halo. In the first few episodes of s2, she has no problem with hurting and killing people. Remember how much she enjoyed torturing Ava in the first episodes of s1. She was always morally grey at best, if not straight up bad.

Lilith is one of the most interesting characters of the show, and I say that only because so much thought has been put into Ava and I am obsessed with my Baetrice, so Lilith comes close third. The depth of her story is so good. The idea of making her the opposite of Ava, since the first episode of season 1, they are playing the long game. Ava started the show with nothing, and through trust and resilience, found a family and a purpose. Lilith started the show with everything, and through selfishness and refusing support, she lost her purpose and her family.

They didn’t “fuck up her arc” in season 2. This has always been her story.

So sorry to be the one who broke the bad news!! I’m thrilled to see the community fighting and some media outlets write about the outrage. But I’m sure many feel that this could be another WN emotional roller coaster, so that’s not great.

All that said, I’m so grateful to have gotten what we got on screen from a network show. The cast and crew who have been so Team Kacy. And most of all, that the show sparked REALLY talented queer writers, you’re on the top of my list, to write amazing stories about Kacy and the ohana. So whatever happens, I’m glad you’re a part of this community and I get to revisit your work to soothe the sadness and anger that will bubble up for a while.

And fully with you when you posted about always getting knocked down my a Jemily gifset. I think my touchstone ships have been Jemily, Calzona, and now Kacy. Forever floored by a gifset that shows up on the dashboard of this perfect hellsite.

Writing prompt: MC, Jessy, Hannah, Lily and Cleo are all having a hard time dealing with what happened in the mine. They decide to take a girls trip to get their minds off of everything but things don't go as planned. Bonus points if you make it really funny.

WN: Hello Red, thank you so much for giving this challenging prompt! I deeply apologise for writing this late and I'm not sure if this what you had expected but I would still publish it anyway because I love to ruin people's expectation aha. So, yeah. I'm sorry for my messy writing and grammar. Please bear it with me. Warning: Violence. Characters: MC, Jessy, Cleo, Lilly, Hannah, and little bit of Jake because why not? Words: 4000 more or less.

Don't Be A Stranger.

Things are being so hard after what happened in the mines. It’s been months and no one is able to move on. Everyone is having hard time and it shows as clear as the glass on their faces. Dan’s remorse, Cleo’s frustration, Lilly’s misery, Thomas’s resentment, Hannah’s regret, and Jessy. . . .I’m not sure with Jessy. One time her eyes look darker and show rage, one time her eyes look miserable and show grief, and one time her eyes look like an empty hole and show nothing.

Everything is not the same anymore after Richy’s death, after the veracity of the story has been revealed; after all of us know the truth behind Man Without A Face, after all of us know the story among Hannah, Richy, and Amy. Everything is not the same after what happened in the mines.

I don’t think I’m also able to accept this, to accept the truth completely. Even though we managed to rescue Hannah, even though Jake is safe and not getting caught from his pursuers, even though the case is over, but it feels so wrong. Of course it is, someone is died. Our friend is died. Nothing will be the same anymore.

But it doesn’t mean we cannot have time to put aside the grief and look after ourselves first, right? So, here we are; trying everything to get our minds off from everything for a while. The girls are planning to make a short trip to the beach, its 3 days and 2 nights trip. At first, the boys are against this but Cleo and Lilly already rented mini RV for our trip and they finally relented. But Jake is still against this and he keeps telling me how bad this idea is. Just like right now.

JAKE: I’m still not surely pleasant with this trip, MC.

MC: I know, but we are on our way already. Cleo is driving the RV right now while chit-chatting to Jessy, the RV is surprisingly huge! Hannah and Lilly are playing cards right now, they are just giggling to each other. All of them are trying to have fun, Jake. Isn’t that great?

JAKE: What about you?

MC: I want to play cards too but you still cannot let me go. Here I am trying to reassure you everything will be fine

JAKE: Alright.

JAKE: But I still want you to keep me posted. I want to make sure you are doing fine there.

MC: Yes, sir!

JAKE: Haha.

JAKE: Talk to you later, MC.

JAKE IS NOW OFFLINE

I put my phone away and walk to the table where Hannah and Lilly are playing cards; both of them now are looking at me with cards on their hands. “Hey, I want to join after you are done playing.”

“You mean after I make Hannah lost the bet,” Lilly is smirking.

“Oh right, you wish.” Hannah sticks her tongue out.

It’s fun to see all of them are doing well, especially for Hannah. She has had treatment for her trauma which not only about when she’s missing but also everything in the past. I still have mixed up feeling about Hanson’s family doesn’t accuse her but instead just let her go like this. It’s clear as mud, I’m grateful for her but no doubt that it makes me confused and hard to understand.

“MC, look at this!” Jessy shouts my name with waving her phone in front of me. “This is our beach house. It looks so pretty, right?” she is smiling from ear to ear. I’m smiling back at her and giving nod.

“It is. How can we afford that again?” I turn myself to Cleo, trying to recall how we can a beautiful house near the beach which looks like out from the fairy tale.

“My cousin let me borrow it since she owes me something. I never want to black-mailing her like this but I think it’s great opportunity for all of us.” Cleo grins while explaining.

“Cleo is the life-saver!” Hannah exclaims, her reaction makes us laugh. But I take a glance to Jessy, she’s smiling but I have no clue why but her smile doesn’t show happiness. I think I might stare at her for too long and she somehow can sense it because right now she is looking at me and with this smile on her face and eyebrows are raised; somehow asking me through telepathy why I am staring at her. I shake my head and give my reassurance smile to her.

While heading to the beach and our lovely house, we are spending our times in the road by giggling, joking around, playing board game or stupid truth or dare. It feels so nice and I’m enjoying every moment I have with them. It feels like we are really having trip like common people, like the trip that we usually do when we have time to hang out together. It feels normal.

We are finally arrived to our beach house. Cleo parked our RV in front of the house and turn off the machine. “Alright, girls. We are here, let’s check the house first before we bring our bags inside.” Cleo gets out first from the car and I can see her checking the house from the window.

“So, what are we waiting for?” Lilly walks toward the door then she’s trying to open it.

“Come on, Lilly!” Hannah says impatience. I peek from Hannah’s shoulder and it looks like that Lilly is having trouble to open the door.

“I don’t know why but the door is stuck!” she grunts while still trying to open it.

“What, really?” Jessy shows up behind me and her face is showing worried.

Lilly is still trying so hard to open the door but unexpectedly her hand is slipped and somehow hit Hannah’s in the nose. “Ouch!”

“Oh my god, sorry sis!” Lilly immediately reach Hannah and put her hands around Hannah’s neck; trying to hug her to ask for forgiveness. She is showing worried but also laughing at the same time, it makes Hannah feel annoyed and slap her shoulder playfully. The Donfort sisters’ act makes me and Jessy laugh by seeing their bickering like that. As soon as all of us are laughing, Cleo managed to open the door from outside. Her doing catch all of our attentions.

“What on earth that taking you guys so long? And why Hannah’s nose is so red?” Cleo’s question then makes us to continue our laughs again.

I walk out from the RV and look in awe to the beach house in front of me. There is only one house there and no residences surround us. I remember that Cleo mentioned that this is private place and the neighbourhood are living 30 minutes from our place. Great place to enjoy our time to relax or even if someone kidnap and murder any of us since no one can hear and bother with our existence.

The house is beautiful, it is painted by mixing of baby blue and ivory, it has three floors and my guess that the third floor is an attic. Beneath the house is like an empty place to chill and relax since there are some wooden beach chairs and small table heading to the beach behind the house. To get inside the house, we need to take the outdoor stairs. The terrace in front of the front door is not quite big and also there is nothing special in the terrace. The only thing that catching my eyes is the windows in this first floor are wide picture size in each side, which offer best way to enjoy the scenery and let the sunray shower the house.

Inside the first floor of the house, we are able to see the living room and open kitchen and also another terrace in the end corridor of the house which showing directly the view of the beach. There is a fireplace which somehow makes me excited. There are also stairs that heading to the second floor of the house, under the stairs is bathroom which contains toilet, mirror that pinned on the wall, and corner shower with glass and no curtains to cover it. Either the architect or the owner of this house is confident with their body until they won’t complain if someone suddenly breaks in inside while they are showering.

“Our bedroom is in the second floor, we are going to split up since it’s only two bedrooms. The main bedroom is filled by 3 people and the second one is for 2 people.” Cleo explains while she is heading to us. We are already resting ourselves on the couch in the living room; feeling exhausted all of sudden after the long trip.

“How are we going to do that?” Hannah asks, her head is resting on Jessy’s shoulder.

“I’m all okay with whichever room but I want to sleep with Hannah.” Lilly explains then wrap her arms on Hannah’s arm. Hannah gives this disgusted expression toward her.

“Let me breath for a while, Lilly! You cannot always stick to me.” Hannah rolls her eyes.

“Yes, I can!” Lilly stick her tongue out.

“I think it will be great if we just do it with fate. Let’s play rock, paper, scissor to decide it?” I finally suggest. After hearing my suggestion, Hannah’s face beaming.

And that’s how the next thing happened is we did rock, paper, and scissor and the universe decided our fate; the main room consist of Cleo, Jessy, and Lilly, meanwhile the other room is for Hannah and me. After deciding our rooms, we are bringing our stuffs to our own rooms. The room is pretty much big and comfy with the wall is painted by ivory and some spots are covered by wallpaper with geometrical shape. There are bay windows with the blue couch leans on one of it and there is door which connects to the terrace which split our room with theirs. Our room only has one large bed there and it is somehow asking me to lie down, so I did what it has to be done.

“Heaven!” I throw myself to the bed, Hannah is giggling then doing the same thing like I did and right now she is lying beside me.

“The bed is so comfy.” She is rolling herself to left then to right and making her body is leaning with mine.

“I know right,” I close my eyes and try to relax my body with the fluffy pillow and soft linen under me.

“You know, I thank you to suggest we did rock, paper, and scissor for deciding our room. I want to stay away from Lilly for a while.” Hannah sighs, makes me to open my eyes and take glance to her.

“Why?” I shift my position to be able to look at her in the eyes.

“It’s just…after what happened makes her being so over-protective with me. I’m the one who supposed to do that since I’m the oldest from all of us, but this is kind of the opposite from the reality.” She explains, her hand is rubbing her face, frustrated if I might guess.

I didn’t say anything and just let her vent out the frustration, I cannot understand the feeling since I’m not the oldest child in the family but the youngest one; that’s why whenever people become too protective toward me, I already felt used with that. After all, Hannah is now an oldest sister with two younger siblings, it must have been hard for her to be taken care of all the time. Yes, you read that right. She already found out about Jake and I found it awful that Jake is few months younger than Hannah, since it means Mr Donfort kept both of Hannah’s and Jake’s mothers close at the same time. What a jerk.

I try to move the topic and talk about anything else to cheer her up. Luckily, my trick is working and now we are having long conversations about everything and cannot stop to laugh. While both of us are talking and laughing, our door which connects with the other bedroom is getting knocked on. It’s Jessy which asked us to join them to play with in the beach. We both agree and quickly get change ourselves with our swimsuits. We are playing with the warm sands and ocean wave; all of us are having great time.

After done playing with the ocean, I’m walking toward Jessy who is chilling with her drink in one of the wooden beach chairs. I’m having seat beside her, “enjoying your ‘me-time’?”

She nods then takes a sip from her drink, “of course. This place is perfect.”

“Perfect for taking break?” I confirm.

“Perfect for hiding and doing something that boost adrenaline!” she grins.

“Whoa, like what?” now I’m curious with what she is thinking since her eyes are sparkling because of excitement.

But Jessy didn’t say anything to answer my question and merely smile at me. There is this smile of her which giving me strange feeling because somehow it doesn’t look like her usual smile. I know this is weird; probably I’m just being paranoid and worried at her so I just try to shrug it off.

We are playing around, having fun, enjoying with each other’s company until any of us doesn’t realise that this is the last night that we are staying in this beach house. We wanted to make campfire outside but suddenly there is rainstorm and we decided to stay in the house and enjoy the warmth of the fire from fireplace. It is so nice and cuddly and all of us are curling to each other with the wide blanket covering. Even though there is so much rain falling and it sounds so intense outside, the pitter-patter of the raindrops against our windows and roofs mixed into one long and whirring noise; but it doesn’t bother us with the warmth of the fire and soft blanket which bathing our skin, giving us comfort and also pleasant feeling.

“Oh, I just remember something!” Jessy suddenly stood up from the couch and walking to the second floor, makes us wondering with what she is trying to do. Before any of us managed to ask her, she already headed to us with bringing a bottle of wine.

“You brought drink!” Hannah yells in happiness.

“I did, yeay! I’m sorry I almost forgot about it.” Jessy apologises then she walks to the kitchen and trying to open the bottle. Hannah and Lilly then walked to the open kitchen and helping her by bringing our glasses to drink the wine. At first, I refuse since I don’t think to drink for tonight, but they are good to persuade me so I decided to also enjoy the wine with them.

I don’t think I drink so much since I clearly remember that I only take one or two small sips but somehow my head started to spin and my eyes are so heavy and I suddenly feel so drowsy. The next thing I know that everything is suddenly collapsed into darkness and I hear there is something shattered.

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw is the fire from fireplace. I’m not sure at first because it’s still blurry but after I’m trying to recollect my consciousness, I’m sure it’s the fire from before. I’m still in the living room. My head is throbbing in pain and I’m still feeling dizzy, it feels like I just got beaten by some people. . . .or did I? Since I can sense my body is numb and something is holding me down and it seems to be tying me up. I look at my body and just found out that I’m actually being tied up.

In the room with only the fire from fireplace which helps me to observing my surrounding, I found out the others are also in the same condition with me. But they are still not conscious yet. There are Hannah, Cleo, Lilly, and. . . .hold on, where is Jessy? I want to call her name but somehow my throat is dry and there is no sound I could make. I start to be panic, I’m so worried what if someone who did this to us is kidnapping her and taking her somewhere. Whoever they are, I cannot see them anywhere.

“Oh, you are awake.”

I recognise the voice and my head is sticking to everywhere to look at the voice’s owner. My eyes widen in surprise, my brain is still trying to connect the dot. How can I manage to understand the reason Jessy is freely walking toward me without being tied up like the rest of us? Her smile is cold like there is neither empathy nor the kindness like she usually has; her gaze is so dark as if the whole storm and grey clouds managed to get inside. As much as I hate to admit, but there is only one reasonable explanation for this kind of situation.

I am furious. I am hurt. I feel betrayed. This is the second time; this is the second time after what Richy had done.

“Why?” I whisper in pain, finally let out the voice which just stuck in my dry throat.

“You tell me, MC. Why?” Jessy shrugs then walking in circle, “why the hell I can’t!?” she exclaims.

“Jessy…” I mutter her name, feeling lost and hurt until I have no clue what to say.

“I still don’t get it how could we suppose to move on from Richy’s death!? Especially you, MC! I expect a lot from you! This is so unfair. Why Hannah is alive when Amy and also Richy have to die! You think she deserve the second chance, no? After she killed someone, ups I mean—after she killed three people in row!” she snickers.

I shake my head, trying to wake myself up from this nightmare. This cannot be right, this cannot be happening! But nothing happens; I’m still here with this scary situation. Please let me wake up! I’m tearing up and slipping the tears fall down to my cheeks. I’m not scared with her; I’m scared with what my friend turned to be.

Jessy is heading to me then stroking my hair gently, and then she is pulling my hair so I can look at her in the eyes. I don’t know if it’s because of the expression I’m making and my teary eyes or she is suddenly in her right mind which making her soften her face, I can see the Jessy I have known through her eyes right now.

“My twin, I never wanted to hurt you…but you disappoint me.” She clicks her tongue and shakes her head in disapproval.

“What are you going to do right now?” I mumble, it’s hard to look at your friend suddenly become completely stranger who could never recognise in one night so I just look away; still being denial with whoever the person that I’m facing right now.

“What it has to be done.” She whispers then she lets her hand off from my hair then walking past me. I’m not sure what she’s doing but I can hear something splash and splatter behind my back. As soon as I can recognise the smell, I shut both of my eyes; the smell of gasoline. While my eyes are still shutting, accepting whatever the fate I will face in the split of seconds, I can hear the click sound which if I can guess it must be the sound of the lighter.

I open both of my eyes reluctantly and finding out Jessy is sitting beside me. “Why you are not leaving yet? This is only for VIP guest.” I joke, but my face is stern.

She is giving this dry laugh while her eyes are fixated with the fire which spreading and eating everything inside the house. “I’m also in the list, did you forget?”

I don’t understand with her words but I just let it go and then close both of my eyes.

“MC!? Wake up! MC!!”

I feel like someone is shaking my body and her voice is asking me to wake up, I want to really. But it’s hard to do that, I put so much effort to get out from this never-ending darkness and finally I managed to open my eyes. I quickly look at around me and find out there are Hannah, Lilly, Cleo, and also Jessy are staring at me. Their faces tell me that they are worried as hell. I almost cry out but instead that I’m giving them reassurance smile. That was just nightmare.

“I think I fell asleep.” I bite my lower lip nervously.

“You bet, the nightmare it must be what you are having.” Lilly sighs.

“You okay, MC?” Cleo asks in concern, I just give her nod and smile.

Apparently we are still chilling in the living room with the fire warms us while the rainstorm is still beating outside. There are some part of me which feel relieved because the nightmare I just had is ended, but some part is still feeling strange with the déjà vu I’m experiencing right now. All of them are worried and they might not say anything but their expressions are questioning my sanity.

“Everything is fine, girls.” I convince them.

“Tell us everything if you need something, okay?” Hannah rest her palm on my knee, I nod and mouth my answer, “of course.”

“I know what makes you feeling better,” Jessy is standing from the couch and jogging herself to the second floor. Before any of us could manage to ask what she is doing, she already came back with the wine on her hand. “I’m sorry, I almost forgot about it.” She apologises then walks to the kitchen and try to open the bottle.

There is strange feeling inside me. This already happened before.

“You brought drink!” Hannah yells in happiness. I immediately turn myself toward her, if my nightmare is really happening then she and Lilly will walk to the kitchen to get some glasses. And it’s true; both of them are now coming back with glasses. This can’t be happening right, this is just a coincidence right?

“I don’t think I want to drink right now.” I try to reject politely.

“Oh, why?” Hannah whines. I try to think hard with what’s reason I should make. I definitely cannot tell that I have strange feeling that my brain thinks I’m experiencing déjà vu, right? Can I?

“I don’t want my head is getting more hurt than it is now.” I lie.

“But, this is a medicine. Who knows if you take some sips then you are going to feel better?” Jessy suggests. I usually don’t have doubts to her but with I had experienced in my dream, I’m being sceptical.

“You sound lot like Dan right now.” Cleo laughs. “But don’t force MC; just go get some rest okay? You can go to sleep.”

Cleo is indeed a life-safer; I thank her and say good night to them before heading myself to my room with Hannah. Quickly I take my phone and send quick message to Jake, I don’t believe this déjà vu kind of crap or something, but if anything happens tonight, I want him to know that I love him so much.

MC: Jake, I have strange dream

MC: I think it’s more to be nightmare. The worst nightmare ever. And when I woke up, something strange is happening

MC: I just want you to know

MC: Oh God.. I know this is weird and silly but I just want you to know that

MC: Jake, I love you so much

MC IS NOW OFFLINE

After sending the messages to Jake, I can hear something is shattered in the first floor. Without thinking twice, I immediately run to there and find out the glass which Cleo was holding fell and shattered on the floor. Not only just Cleo, but Lilly, and also Hannah are lying unconscious on the couch. Before I managed to run from my position, something hit my back head and everything is suddenly going to dark.

You know what.. I have a feeling I have to get this out of my chest before big announcements (renewal as I belive it should or the other word that should not be named). I really think this show and especially show runners got us a big deal. First season was exceptional not even gonna talk about this one. Like everything that was said and done and.. Like I literally have no words because I remember when I first decided to give warrior nun s1 a chance (don't get me wrong but the title.. It sounds so freaking funny, dumb, interesting and unbelievable at the same time😅.. For someone who has no idea) I fell in love with it.. So much..with every aspect of the series

It was my comfort show since the first time I watched it, and I belive it will be after whatever news we get in the next weeks.. Just the concept of the show, characters, the way it was filmed, scenes, aesthetic, cinematography, action! EvERYTHING is so great it hurts

Anyway to the point (getting sentimental here sorry)

In s2 they gave us everything they could (whole team of WN) and I mean it, if you watched season 2 you know what I'm talking about. Not just the facts (the fanfic tropes, amazing moments, fight scenes, real characters - which none of them were forced-everything feels so natural! Like backstories? None of them was like straight forward.. Like this character is like this because this and this happened in their life, no. They gave us space, entire warrior nun team gave us space(our own fictional world we can create) to only imagine what happened in-between. I cannot appreciate and thank them enough.

To the point again.. Even if (I pray to God/Netflix for not doing this to us) we.. I don't want to say it.. If the end of the season two is all we get.. We have so much space, by we I mean fans, writers, artists and so on.. To make the most of it (hyperbole) I think in the way the writers team prepared for it-for us as well. The hell! Simon even fought for the after credit scene because he could not let the fans hanging in the unknown. So they've tried to make the best they could.

So with this statement (which is propoably the longest I've ever made) I beg you not to compare avatrice with clexa because trust me I've been there when it happened and it's not the same. Not the Bury your gays trope nor the love story. (not bubbling here. I'm still carrying this fucking pain with me).

With this afrer credit scene they gave us hope they gave us so many stories we can carry on with.. even if it's not on screen.

So with this confusing pep talk I want you to carry on- make art, write fanfiction and so on..

even tho we know that lwj is at the very least attracted to wwx, this early on it really doesn't come off like that at all to anyone else besides lxc. he's even harsher and stricter with wwx than he is with anyone else. of course, later on he does a 180 because he's incapable of acting like wwx means as much to him as anyone else does

wwx goes to a lot of effort this episode to repair his relationship with lwj, which indicates a lot more responsibility and maturity than, say, jc would have us believe. though tbf, wwx isn't trying to become friends for political reasons, he just wants lwj's attention. but he's also defending and explaining his actions, and the fact that he'll retaliate when attacked is of course extremely important later on. even with all the changes he goes through and and nuances we see, his core character is intact throughout. such strong writing

ppl who ship jc and wn are unhinged for various reasons but the kicker is right here. wq briefly held fast to her principle of looking after her family and nobody else, but wen ning never did. he puts himself in danger for people he barely knows over and over again, with no possible reward. this mindset is so alien to jc's caution and 'I got mine' outlook that there's no conceivable way that they could ever make a relationship work. even in an AU, I could barely see them becoming friends. they're just too different at their core

whew, what a long episode. ngl, this sequence at the lake ties with the maze forest as my least favorite parts of the show. it's just so BORING. there's some character work, like wwx saving wen ning and giving him the amulet, jc getting himself a crush, and wwx flirting, but it's not enough to liven up this very dull passage. regardless, the ending where lwj bought the ES for wwx was sweet

Sharing an au bc i like chatting with you and probably won't ever actually write this. It is...sad.

Okay, you know how most modern AUs have wx with adopted a-Yuan?

Imagine A-Yuan losing his family due to some great engineering failure that affected a lot of people. He ends up with his grandparents until they can't take care of him anymore and he ends up in foster care.

Scenario 1: He ends up with the Lan family. He is never taught about his past family. He has a good relationship with both LXC and LWJ. One day, LWJ shows up with a new boyfriend. A-Yuan likes him! Until he finds out WWX was responsible for the incident that killed his parents.

Scenario 2: His uncle, Wen Ning, tracks him down and takes him in. A-Yuan grows up hearing about his family and knows who he is. Eventually, he gets an internship at the Lan family's company. Training gets split between LWJ and an outside consultant called WWX (who was hyped the moment he heard about LWJ's little protege). A-Yuan comes to regard WWX as someone to look up to... until he finds out about WWX's greatest mess.

Damn, yeah! The whole concept of A-Yuan dealing with the fact that a person he likes and looks up to could be responsible for the death of his parents is definitely worth exploring!

As mentioned some days ago, the fandom is really missing on the chance to go further into one of the many gray and complicated situations in canon: that A-Yuan is a Wen, and as such, his parents could have very well been casualties of demonic cultivation. And tbh it would be such a fascinating thing thematically and narratively that the same man was the reason A-Yuan survived.

But ANYWAYS. Ooh boy, you really out there, not holding your punches with the feels :'D. I honestly don't know which one would hurt more lol: on one hand, you'd think that there would be more of an emotional connection in the first scenario for the discovery to hurt more, but there's the fact that his life until that point was one of blissful ignorance, so it could be argued that he was happy.

On the other hand, while it would suck to know that someone you ended up respecting and liking was the culprit of your parents' deaths, it is just an intership. However, if he was raised fully knowing what happened, it could be assumed that he was perpetually conscious of the family he got robbed of (regardless of how much uncle WN would love and do his best for him).

Either scenario can get messy as all fucks, and there's also the fact that we know that A-Yuan turns into a mature and kind young man, so it'd be interesting to see how he handles this. Especially since this is modern AU and you don't have the whole "they were at war, WWX did what he had to, it was natural that there'd be casualties" argument that could make the discovery a bit easier to process since his parents would be completely innocent civilians here.

... then again, it was an accident, so is WWX really to blame??? Damn, there is no way to make this any less complicated lol.

Short reflection on the gusulan rules, lwj's struggles and the fickle nature of justice.

I've read so many wonderful metas on the wall of discipline and lwj's relationship to it, and it's a never-ending source of fascination to me. I wanted to share my own little reflection on it, and while I did read a piece on the rules just recently this isn't a response to that. It did inspire me to write it though, so I did. The rules I refer to are taken from the wiki, so I may get them wrong due to me not knowing the original phrasing in chinese. Anyways, here it is.

One consensus is that the rules themselves are imperfect, and while I think this is true, I don't think we can isolate this from the idea that people are imperfect. The individual has to judge the situation at hand with bias on which rules to prioritize. Given the sheer number of rules, and the multifaceted nature of moral dilemmas, it's nearly given that several rules will stand in opposition to one another.

I also think the way we define the rules will change depending on the rules in question and their context. In many ways they are guidelines: "do not drink alcohol.", "do not rise after 5" etc. Their intention is clear, and the enforcement of them relies less on individual interpretation and more on what importance you regard them with, if exceptions can be made, and so on.

However if we move away from the clear-cut rules and over to the less so, we'll find that they cease to be guidelines at all. When I use the term "guidelines", my definition is "an answer to which choice you should make in a given situation". For example: "do not drink alcohol" is a guideline, but "uphold the value of justice" is not, since upholding justice is not an action in itself, but the result of one: by holding the wrongdoer accountable you uphold justice. Let's not forget there's layers to this too. Sure they should be held accountable, but what does that mean? Punishment? Repentance? If punishment then what punishment? And so on.

Due to this I personally won't put lwj "distancing" himself from the rules as the core of his character development, or that his inner journey revolves around realizing that the rules are imperfect. Instead, I think his struggle stems from facing situations in which his previous approach is no longer enough to judge what the right choice is, if there even is one at all. That's not to say lwj had an overly simplistic world-view in the beginning. He knew about the fate of his parents after all, but one thing is knowing situations can be complex and answers hard to define, another is to find yourself in those situations. The problem isn't the rules, because the rules aren't the answer. Sometimes they're guidelines, sometimes they are values, ideas. By their very nature they cannot give you the answer, because the answer in this context relies on bias.

Let's look at the nightless city aftermath. Lwj is faced with the dilemma of helping wwx or standing with his sect. What was justice in that situation? Wwx killed jzx. He did not intend to, but the responsibility of the action is his. The great sects in turn says that the wen siblings turning themselves in will absolve wwx of any guilt. This is a lie, and while wn was involved in the incident, wq wasn't. To uphold justice wwx needs to be held accountable for the act, but what does accountability mean? Who decides this? The people who lied and targeted the innocent? For that act they should be held accountable. Then who shall cast the first stone? Was it right of wwx to unleash the bloodbath? They attacked him first, but who are they? Were everybody there complicit? Even lwj? Is wwx's attack on the sects justice, self-defense or revenge, and does the motivation behind it change its nature?

This isn't meant as an example of a situation with no answer. I'm sure many will have their own thoughts on who was right, who was wrong, and what the right course of action would be. My point is this: to get to a conclusion you'll have to apply bias. To uphold justice we'll first have to define what that is, and if it's the core on which we should base our judgement. In the end lwj didn't land on a clear conclusion, but he made his choice regardless.

So I don't think it was a struggle to do the right thing and the rules being something that blocked his way. I think it was a struggle to live up to those values, yet not knowing how to do so. How do you stay righteous in a situation where you can't properly discern right from wrong? It's paralyzing, but inaction could be the worse choice in the end, so even if you don't have the answer you'll do what you think is right. That's the most important thing.

The reason why I prefer this perspective is because it's a dilemma we'll all face eventually. Perhaps we don't have the 3000 rules, but we do have moral guidelines and social rules. "Don't cut in line", "pick up after your dog"- guidelines. "Be kind", "help those in need"- values. As we move through life we'll see situations in which the answer is not as clear-cut as we'd like. How do we uphold justice then? In the end it all comes down to our own judgement, and to quote wwx's words of wisdom:

"(...) let the self judge the right and wrong, let others decide to praise or to blame, let gains and losses remain uncommented on. I, too, know what I should and shouldn't do."

I appreciated your thoughts about MDZS Vol. 2, since you were able to help me realize just what bothered me about Wangxian/WWX in the novel. It always felt to me that LWJ was WWX's only romantic option in a way bc WWX didn't have to think about his past as much with him? Personally I felt like his relationship with JC was more intense and meaty and interesting. And also why JYL maybe HAD to die. Honestly the ending just feels so strange and unhealthy the more I think abt it.

[pt 2 i guess??] but also can you imagine JYL if she had lived post-timeskip? how she would react to WWX being back? how she would feel about the core reveal as well as WWX + JC's reactions it and the way WN revealed the truth? how she would feel about what happened to Qin Su? also JYL had to die bc no way she's taking LWJ forcing her son to be quiet lightly (only half joking here).

ANON YES I AGREE WITH ALL OF THIS. I got another anon back when I first complained about Novel WWX who defended his lack of concern about his past actions with that exact argument: that meaningfully acknowledging and processing the consequences of his past actions would get in the way of his happily-ever-after with LWJ. But yeah, for my part, I much, much, much prefer the tangled mess of love and sacrifice and perceived betrayal that all iterations of Chengxian have going on to the Novel Wangxian holding pattern of LWJ behaving romantically towards WWX and WWX misinterpreting and/or not remembering over and over until they finally have bathtub sex.

And oh my god, there is SO MUCH GREAT STUFF you can do with JYL living! Yes, okay, you don't have as profound a rift with JC... but I think that's compensated for by there now being a rift between WWX and his beloved shijie whom he previously could count on to mother him and laugh good-naturedly at his antics without ever questioning. Suddenly, WWX's least complicated relationship has become one of his most complicated. How would he respond to that, especially since he can't write off JYL as being a cranky asshole like he can JC? When the sweetest person in the jianghu is unable to forgive you, but you know she loved you enough to risk her life to save you, what do you do with that? I get why the drama was reluctant to change such a huge plot point, but I'd love to have seen that explored within drama canon with its more-developed JYL in particular.

Re: JYL and QS, ahhhhh there are so many ways that could go! Is that particular tragedy prevented entirely, as JGS marries JYL off to JGY to keep JL at Lanling fulltime? Does JYL somehow get wind of Madame Qin's secret and break the news to QS herself? Does NHS use JYL--either wittingly or no--as one of his informants, and she delivers the letter not realizing the consequences it will have? At the very least, JYL would be a trusted friend and ensure that someone gave a damn about QS's death other than her husbandbrother who's trying to conceal a severed head.

And omg. Yeah, Hanguang-jun, you go ahead and try that silencing spell shit in front of JYL. JC has sect politics to consider. JYL's priority and actual job as dowager is to defend her son. The gloves are coming off.

a rant about mdzs and fandom

Hi Dee :") As a long time follower, the recent influx of asks and some takes have gotten my mind rolling LOL

Regarding your recent ask (re: the XianQing fanfic), I agree that if WWX or LWJ were married to someone else, they would invest the time, effort and patience to make the relationship work especially if they are compatible. It's not that both of them can't be happy with other people; the most fundamental aspect of their relationship is that they are most happiest with each other. They choose each other in their entirety regardless of distance/separation. Both LWJ and WWX won't choose anyone else because deep down, they've already chosen someone and that is each other. WWX doesn't fit as a fandom nor can he be shipped with anyone else in canon BUT I think his character at its core is often modified extensively to fit the mold.

RE: WEN QING: I don't know what's with the MDZS fandom reducing WQ to a love interest. She literally shows 0 interest in canon in WWX and while you can twist that in fanfiction, it's always great to see Wen Qing's character and love being erased for a homophobic trope on her and WWX (pls note my sarcasm @CQL I SEE YOU). I would argue that the same thing is done to WN however he's infantilized.

Some of the recent anons have been using fics and claiming them as canon, which is so wild to me LMAO In fandom and fanfiction, anything goes. Characters are modified to be shippable, and people want to see their characters to be pushed into different scenarios + to see how they will thrive in a different environment/cast etc. Fandom for me at least is an enhancement, exploration and experimentation of canon. I will admit that MXTX's works and lead pairings are very well-written to the extent that I don't ship them much with anyone (95% main pairing + 5% of what ifs HAHA).

Ship and let ship, but I'm definitely someone who has a low threshold for when people argue that the canonical gay romance is worse and less valid compared to a fanon ship that neither of the main pairing would ever show interest in canon.

I have a question for you regarding characterization, its subjectivity and validity. Would some works technically have poor characterization or should we take it as the author's interpretation of the character? I typically ignore it honestly but sometimes, I have difficulty accepting different characterization especially when the characters are modified immensely.

Sorry for my long rant, Dee! I've been kinda sick of the trolls LOL I'm taking a fandom break, but I hope to hear your thoughts about this! You're one of my favourite authors and I always enjoy hearing your takes and understandings on MXTX, her works and overall fandom.

Rant away, lmao. Everyone has their frustrations with the fandom, of course.

About your question, I believe there needs to be some flexibility when it comes to characterization because fanfics pleases characters in different situations and humans respond to their circumstances can be somewhat unpredictable. There are also ways to interpret a character depending on what *layer* you wanna focus on.

Every character has different layers. You choose what suits your writing style and plot. I typically make characters a little more serious than they are in canon. Not to say that is a better way to write it, canon will always be the best way, but I don't have MXTX's talent for lighthearted narration.

The key is to find the right balance between plot, your interpretation of the character, and the core traits in canon. You can change the outward personality a bit based on what the plot demands but it is best if the core established in canon remains intact.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 12 second part

Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!

After locking Wei Wuxian into some comically large chains, Wen Chao has him thrown into the dungeon, with an unpleasant surprise.

This Fucking Dog

Being a fan of The Untamed involves occasional second-hand embarrassment, like when they fly on their swords, or the zombies all have the same wig, or a fight sequence moves slower than everybody’s granny. It's ok because each of these things is offset by excellence in acting, story, costumes, weapons, sets, etc.

Then there's this fucking dog.

The department of questionable practical effects really outdid themselves with this thing. Just seeing this awful creation on screen gives me so much cringe squick I can barely look at it. But for you, dear readers, I FORCED MY EYEBALLS to watch the entire dog sequence OVER AND OVER. Then I applied some brightness adjustments and looked at it EVEN MORE.

Let's get desensitized! I’m going all in on this monstrosity.

First, this dog does not ever move its body or its feet. Its legs are totally immobile. It appears to be made of a big sawhorse with a stick for the neck. The head swings up and down and side to side. That’s it.

“Animatronic” is too generous of a term for this thing. The animatronics at Chucky Cheese learned to play musical instruments and host birthday parties decades ago. This dog cannot play an instrument and it has to wait for Wei Wuxian to walk over to it before it can attack him.

When it falls over after Wen Ning K.O’s it, it’s like a chair falling over. It just topples to the side, legs sticking straight out.

Next, It has a mouth full of teeth, which opens and closes. And it has drool the texture of Astroglide Extra-Thick Gel. But...no tongue.

Seriously you guys, it literally does not have a tongue. They just sculpted a little bump at the at the bottom of its mouth, despite dogs being known for, like, lolling their tongues out of their mouths at every opportunity.

Moving along, it has dull, lifeless eyes, and its eyelids are visibly disconnected from the rest of its head, like a doll that mechanically shuts its eyes when you lay it down to sleep.

Finally, its fur looks like a fucking muppet, and it has random shiny spots all around its eyes and lips. These are probably supposed to be body fluids of some kind, but they just look like someone was careless with the cra-z-glue.

Xiao Zhan gamely tries to act opposite this ridiculous fail prop, but there is nothing remotely scary about it.

Here is Wei Wuxian being scared. I replaced the animatronic dog with a reversed clip of my dog Pepper asking for a piece of cheese, and I think it looks more convincing this way.

Ok, let's be done with this stupid fucking dog. Wen Ning knocks it out, Wen Chao criticizes it in the morning, and nobody ever speaks of it again.

Wei Wuxian is so mortified to have endured this farce that when Lan Wangji asks him, much later, “why are you afraid of dogs?” he does not say “don’t you remember that time I got chewed on by a giant animatronic dog at Wen Chao’s place?” but instead pretends that this never fucking happened.

Wen Ning to the Rescue

For contrast, the next dungeon scene is a really touching and important encounter between Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian.

Wen Ning comes and knocks out the creature, and gives Wei Wuxian medicine.

Wen Ning is doing this in defiance of his clan and his sister, simply because Wei Wuxian is his friend. Yes, he feels indebted, but Wen Qing saved WWX’s life once, so the tally is already even. Wen Ning is just super attached to Wei Wuxian, and vice versa; WWX calls him Wen-Xiong in this scene.

When Wen Ning explains how to use the medicine, Wei Wuxian changes the subject to ask how WN and his sister are doing. He is bleeding, chained up, high on adrenaline and fear, and what he really wants is to hear how his friends are doing. When Wen Ning talks about Wen Qing’s troubles, Wei Wuxian wishes she would accept help, instead of always going it alone.

Wei Wuxian thanks Wen Ning formally, and tells him no words can express his gratitude. Whether this is a literally correct translation, the gratitude both of these young men feel toward each other transcends words. It will become a driving force in both of their lives as they save each other from increasingly awful situations.

Wen Ning tells Wei Wuxian about the burning of Cloud Recesses....the burning of the half we never visit. It would suck to damage that exquisite set, so I’m ok with that production choice, but creates some cognitive dissonance when characters get upset about the fire.

Wei Wuxian reacts to the news of Lan Wangji’s injury by punching the concrete floor of the dungeon, which is dumb but also highly relatable.

After Wen Ning leaves, Wei Wuxian decides to save the medicine for Lan Wangji, who might not even need it, while WWX is bleeding right now and definitely needs it. No matter how bad things are for him personally, Wei Wuxian is always thinking about ways to help the people he loves, and constantly seeing his own needs as less important than everybody else’s.

Breakfast Time

After his night of terror and maiming, Wei Wuxian emerges as chipper as ever. Almost like he is already an expert at hiding his trauma from the people close to him.

Lan Wangji gives him a careful look, taking in the sight of his ripped clothes and bloody neck and hands.

Jiang Cheng is angry at Wei Wuxian for joking about his injuries, so he shoves him, potentially causing more injuries.

Wei Wuxian laughs off the signs of torture and attempted murder and everyone goes along with it. Nobody knows what happened to him other than "dungeon" and what he looks like right now, and they’re all just like, okey dokey, I guess you’re fine.

He’ll carefully laugh off his months in the burial mounds in the same way, later, and Jiang Cheng will accept it nearly as readily as he accepts this. But by that time Lan Wangji will see right through him.

Nie Huaisang mentions the Lan Clan in the course of discussing breakfast, and then everyone pauses awkwardly because they know that mentioning this will make Lan Wangji think about the recent attack on his home and the deaths of many of his fellow disciples. Whereas if nobody had mentioned it, he totally wouldn't think about it. That's how grief works, right?

Insult to Injury

Wen Chao decides to spend some time gloating about battles and insulting people's families, which he does with Wen Qing standing behind his eyeline so that she can warn Wei Wuxian not to let his brother go off.

Jiang Cheng is not going to let anybody who isn't his mother insult his father like that, but in a reversal of their normal roles, Wei Wuxian restrains him and helps keep him from doing something rash.

Monster Hunting

Wen Chao makes everyone read out loud until Nie Huaisang wisely faints and gets carried off. Then he gathers everyone for a monster hunt. It's unclear why he wants to go monster hunting but he sure does, and bringing the hostages along might make them all die, which would be a nice bonus.

The cultivators wander around en masse in a small section of forest, thoroughly covering every inch of it. This is a great way to hunt for a dead body but not so good for living prey.

Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng stand around like bitchy queens at a dance club, talking smack about Wen Chao and his girlfriend.

Wei Wuxian brings out a salty phrase and Jiang Cheng wonders what websites he's been going to.

Dude. Lighten up.

Leave that Boy Alone

Wei Wuxian notices Lan Wangji struggling, and now that he knows the backstory, he's determined to help. Jiang Cheng is determined to stop him.

This is, once again, the fundamental disagreement between the brothers, and it's never going to be solvable. Jiang Cheng's specific dislike of Lan Wangji may be rooted in jealousy, but his belief in not helping outsiders runs a lot deeper than that.

For Wei Wuxian, there is no such thing as having helped enough. If someone is his friend, he will never stop helping them, and he has a lot of friends, and makes new ones wherever he goes. He's always going to be giving something of himself, to the detriment of any conflicting obligations.

Jiang Cheng tells him that Lan Wangji won't accept his help, and Wei Wuxian says that's not the point.

What other people think, want, say, or do, is not going to have any effect on whether Wei Wuxian does what he feels is right. This is a bit of a problem where a person's right to self-determination conflicts with Wei Wuxian's need to help them, as Jiang Cheng will eventually discover.

Jiang Cheng's least effective argument is the one he relies on most often when they disagree: other people's problems are not our responsibility. He's saying this to an orphan who was eating trash and stealing scraps from dogs before Jiang Fengmian came into his life.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t seem to realize the underlying logic of this argument. If it's wrong for Wei Wuxian to help the people he cares about, it was also wrong for Jiang Fengmian to help Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng loves Wei Wuxian and would willingly die for him, but he, like his mother, rejects the philosophy that brought them together in the first place.

Wei Wuxian walks away from an upset and shocked Jiang Cheng to offer a piggyback ride to Lan Wangji.

...who won't accept it, but who will remember the offer forever.
