Katguria Academy for Young Excellences.

A prestigious school in Japan, where only the best of the best could attend. Tuition was always expensive but it was no problem for the kids who went here. The kids that attended were from well respected families such as Samsong, Abbias, Mine, and many more.

In this school resided the adopted son of the man known as Doppo Orochi, God of War, and the daughter of a prestigious company called SVP.

“Guys, look at my new gold medal! I swear, those stupid karate competitions my dad puts me in are wayy too easy!”

November 4th, 2012

The day everything went bad.

It was gloomy day, the clouds covering the sun as rain poured. Most people if not everyone brought an umbrella except you so you were soaked and wet. You sat was near the window in the classroom and you were lost in thought. You had so many tests today and you were hoping one of them got rescheduled to another day. The rain knocked on your window and you finally came back to reality to see your crush, Katsumi Orochi.

You were honestly disappointed to be in love with him, I mean, every girl in the school liked him. It was all girls, loners, popular girls, and even gothic kids. He was the embodiment of perfect. He was good looking, had good grades, was favored by all students and teachers, and even knew how to fight. You were kinda jealous, he had everything. Money, girls, and talent.

You were talented too but not to his extent. You always got what you wanted because of the funds you had from family, you had the best grades in your class, and people liked being in your company. You weren't popular but well known but you had a few close friends to get you through the sixth grade. You were just about to go back to zoning out untill something Katsumi and his friend group said caught your attention.

“Yeah, it's kinda dumb to think that some people couldn't fight at all, its just so easy!”

Well, that was controversial.

You looked his way, your hand on your face with a dead panned expression. You rolled your eyes and muttered a slight ‘stupid’ under your breath before you were interrupted once again by your friend storming towards you.

“Hey [Nameee]! Di- ack, Did you study for the test todayyy?”

Your best friend, Los was in front of you, out of breath. Why the hell would they run here, we aren't even starting class until 8:15. You looked up the clock with your eyes. It read 8:12. Three minutes left, no need to run.

“Well? Did you?”

“Obviously, did you?”

“Of course! I just wanted to make sure my best friend won't fail the next test! We both need to make it in good high schools, y'know?”

All of the boys who were previously talking to each other decided to whisper amongst each other after Los's comment on succeeding in life. After the whispering came snickers.

You ignored their stupid laughs and decided to prepare yourself for the first test of the day, Language Arts.

“Uh, [Name]? Um, you might wanna stop preparing yourself. Karateka is approaching us, like right now. At a fast speed, well not really but he's coming.”

Your best friend kept urging you to look forward and your were so tired of them bugging you so once they stopped talking and only huffs of breathe came out of them, you looked forward to see Katsumi's face right in front of yours.

A loud scream erupted from you so suddenly every single person in the rom or outside of it jumped at the sound of it. You fell over in your chair trying to get away from the guy you considered your crush.

“OH MY GOSH.”

You were scared out of your mind while your crush and his friend group just laughed loudly.

“Hahaha, Dear God, you should've seen your face! You looked like a pufferfish when startled, damn, you could be a comedian with this stuff!”

You slowly got up with a glare on your face. You made sure to shake off any dust on your skirt or cardigan. You picked up your stuff that fell off because of your stupid fall and sat down.

“That wasn't funny Katsumi. That actually hurt.”

“Whatever, boo hoo, you'd never make it in the fighting world.”

“So? I don't even want to fight anyone without a reason so you can respectfully get out of my face.”

“Yeah yeah, suck it up already and hop off me for a sec.”

He rolled his eyes as he walked away from your desk. You started feeling really mad and angered by him but Locs told you it wasn't worth it. You sat back down once the teacher entered the classroom.

“Alright, since everyone is present, we will be commencing our exam now.”

“UGHHHHH! Those test study guides were total scams! I didn't seem half of the question I was expecting to see on the exam. I'm so deadddd…”

Los was trailing behind you as the two of you walked to the lunch room. You both complained about the two unfair exams you just went through because of an inaccurate study guide.

“I know right! I probably got lower than an 80% on the stupid thing!”

As you two entered the luxurious lunch room, you got into line for the lunch lady to serve you both.

“Ooh! Chicken sandwiches, not to bad for a day like this, right?”

“Yeah I guess,”

You couldn't even finish your sentence before you felt a push on your back.

“What the-”

You were about to fall face first unto the floor untill Los caught you just in time.

“Oh Gosh! You okay?”

You somehow managed to shake your head a bit to hard which cracked your neck harshly. You hissed in pain while rubbing your neck in an effort to make it feel better.

“Yeah..Just cracked my neck wayy to hard for my own liking.”

You both laughed it off while you said ‘Thank Goodness for Los’ internally as you looked behind you to see the perpetrator of this heinous act.

“Well hey there, Miss-I-Can’t-Keep-Myself-Off-The-Floor, how are you?”

Katsumi-Fucking-Orochi.

“Dude, what's your problem? I didn't even do anything to you, why are you just randomly picking on me for? What’d I do?”

“Well, you pissed me off this morning so I'm just teaching you a lesson! Simple, really.”

“Not my fault your such a prick, I can't believe there is actual girls who like someone like you.”

What a nice way to out yourself [Name].

“The hell you say? You wanna repeat that for everyone to hear?”

Katsumi walked up to you, practically towering over you. He leaned down to get on your level to try intimidate you. All you did was smirk, if he thought that he would scare you while being a 10 year old, he thought wrong.

You were strong at your age so you didn't mind if you had to fight even though you and Katsumi had a diffrence in height, despite being the same age.

“Sure,”

You took a deep breath and screamed with all your might,

“KATSUMI OROCHI IS A PRICK!”

Every student, teacher, staff member, and anyone who was in the school probably heard the scream. Katsumi stood there with a shocked expression on his face, absolutely baffled that you actually went through with it.

“You b-”

Shortly after your scream, teachers and lunch ladies separated the two of you and sent you both to the Principals office.

You didn't regret it, not one bit.

‘Keep looking at me and I'll beat the shit out of you, stupid Karate Major.’

You and Katsumi had been sitting in Principal's office for about a good 30 minutes and counting while shooting dirty looks at each other to pass the time untill he finally entered. The room was clean and organized but the feeling of dread surrounded the place as he walked in. Not one of you even dared to say a word to each other or to the Principal himself. The scent of paper and rain started to be suffocating.

“So, what happened exactly?”

The Principal tried to break the ice but it wouldn't budge. It seemed if the tension could be cut with a knife, it was just such an uncomfortable room to be in.

After a few minutes of the Principal waiting for a response, Katsumi decided to speak up.

“She called me a prick.”

“Well you pushed me.”

“So? It was by accident.”

“Really? Even though you called me Miss-I-Can’t-Keep-Myself-Off-The-Floor?”

“It was a harmless joke, I don't know why you got so hurt by it.”

You and Katsumi kept going back and forth, spewing insults and starting to raise your volume. That's is until the Principal put your whining to an end.

“That's enough!”

You both went silent as the Principal continued.

“Do you two want me to contact your parents because I will if you two keep provoking me.”

The both of you agreed on something. You couldn't have your parents come here or all hell would let loose. The two of your heads shaked in sync, both signalling the fact of the discomfort at the sound of their parents coming there.

“That's what I perceived. Okay, you two obviously don't get along so I won't waste any more of my time dealing with this. Both of you will a detention on Saturday and you will write apology letters to each other. Understood?”

The sound of his voice and the things he listed made you sick. Apologize, to him? Hell no. You rather die first than apologize to a dick like him. Seemed like Katsumi agreed with you on this one thing and gave you a nasty glare.

But did you have a choice?

“Fine, we'll do it.”

Katsumi’s face seemed like someone just killed his mom. He was furious. You gave him a sign to tell him to shut up so you won't get into more trouble and of course, he obliglied. You decided to speak for the both of you to avoid him protesting.

The following days were absolutely amazing. You kept feeling Katsumi's glare on you and you were dreading the sound of Saturday. You had to tell your mom and dad and of course they were disappointed, they ended up taking away your iPod and Computer so here you were.

Saturday, November 9th

Here you were. In front of the school you went to daily. You were absolutely terrified, you just had a very bad feeling about today, you had a feeling. You tried to tell your mom and dad but they told you that it was punishment and you couldn't escape the ‘consequences of your actions.’

“Love you sweetie! Don't forget, okay?”

You simply waved to your dad who tried to keep everything positive, no matter how negative it might be.

“Love, she's in trouble! We have to be mean and angry!”

Your mom is goofy too but she is wayy more serious than your dad.

“But dear! I just love our little girl, she's such an angel!”

“Ugh, just drive you idiot!”

Your mom and dad were just so lovey dovey, you were kinda glad that they were kissing and making out.

Anyways, on the more important subject at hand, how will you survive the dreading feeling in your stomach?

It didn't matter, you were going to be late, it was already 12:38 and you needed to be there by 12:40.

You quickly rushed inside and got to the library where detention was held.

‘‘What the?’’ you muttered so quietly, you're sure no one heard.

As soon as you walked into the room, you saw Katsumi's whole friend group. They looked at you with the same shit-eating grin that Katsumi had. One of them got up and purposely bumped your shoulder. You looked at him baffled.

Why was Katsumi's whole friend group here? What business did they do?

Whatever, not your problem. You kept walking to an empty seat in the back of the library where a window was. Then came the King.

Katsumi walked in with a duffle bag, he probably just came out of karate practice and came straight here. He looked behind to make sure you were there, which was weird, and once he locked eyes with you, he grinned.

Oh gosh, what are they planning?

The two hours of detention finally went by and you and Katsumi exchanged your apology letters. His glare was deadly and you could tell that everything he wrote wasn't sincere but who cared? You wanted out of here. Like now. Your gut feeling got even worse, it was like you were getting kicked in the stomach.

You were looking really beat up so you asked the teachers who were supervising you to go to the restroom. They told you yes but after going, go downstairs because your parents were already here to pick you up.

You silently agreed and went to the bathroom quickly.

You were inside of the girls bathroom fixing your hair and doing basic toilet things. Of course, as expected, you were the only one there.

That is until you heard Katsumi's voice.

“Knock, knock! Anyone home?”

He intruded anyway, peeking in and telling his friends to follow him.

This wasn't good in any possible way.

“What the hell Katsumi? You guys can't be in here! It's the damn girl's restroom!”

“So? You think I really care about the fact that I can't be in here right now? What I care about,

Katsumi approached you slowly, almost like a snake waiting to bite it's prey.

Is to fucking make your life miserable.”

And with that you were jumped.

“Pleas- ACH!”

You tried to scream out for help but one of the boys holding you down covered your mouth.

“Oh shut up bitch. No one will hear you anyway.”

Tears fell from your eyes, you couldn't see at all. All you could feel was every one of Katsumi's friends beating you up. Kicks, punches, slaps everywhere. One of them kicked you so hard in the stomach to point blood came out of your mouth. They all in unison laughed.

“Guess you won't try and mess with us again right bitch?”

“Hah! If she even tries, she'll be dead!”

They all kicked you and continued to mock you.

“Wah Wah Wah! I want mommy!”

“Hey guys, move out the way. I have something for her.”

Katsumi came from the background, just watching all of this. He stepped up to you while you were now on the floor coughing up blood. You were clutching your stomach and you felt like you were about to die.

“Hey whore! You're done for!”

“Hey Katsumi, try to not kill her, I don't wanna go to juvie!”

“Whatever, whatever. Hey bitch. Look up will you?”

You refused to, keeping your head pointed downward. You couldn't, the pain was excruciating.

“I said to fucking look up.”

His tone got even harsher, you terrified. What could you do? What the hell would happen if you kept disobeying his orders? Well, you were about to find out.

“Fine, I'll force you then. Grab the scissors.”

You froze. Scissors? Was going to stab you? Kill you? Cut you? What the hell was about to happen to you? Oh Gosh. You wished you hadn't talk badly about him that Wednesday. As if one of Katsumi's friends shared a brain with you, he asked the same question you had in your mind.

“Uh Katsumi, I hope you're not planning to hurt her with them?”

“Of course not! I'm just going to cut her clothes.”

Clothes? My clothes? What the hell. Oh God help me, what did I get myself into.

Katsumi bent down to your shriveled figure, shying away from him and his crew.

“Well, you're about to be naked! We might even take pictures!”

He came closer to your face, practically breathing on it.

“So you better make up your fucking mind before I decide to stab you instead.”

‘How the hell was this a 10 year old?’ was the only thought going through your mind.

“Well whore? Speak up!”

All of the boys kept yelling at you to respond to Katsumi's question and you were stuck there. Motionless.

It felt like someone just pushed down a cliff of abyss. You felt like you were falling and the tears came gushing out. You were terrified. Scared. This boy was going to kill you, you didn't know what the hell to do. So many thoughts were running through your mind. Help me. You didn't know what to do, your body shaking rapidly. It was over. And you knew.

“Well, Miss Whore won't respond so I'll just make the decision my self!”

Can you try explain what you mean about Ocelot looking like a drag king in mgsv? I feel like your boyfriend in that I just. Don't see it? I'm trying to understand why Ocelot would even have that applied when he's always been just A Guy™

Okay so I'm going to try to do this without getting into Grad-Level 5D Queer Theory Media Criticism, but I also fully realize that in doing that, a lot of this is going to sound very much like I'm saying "Source: Just Trust Me Bro".

(anon i am SO sorry that you happen to be the first person to directly adress me about gender in MGS)

I also wanna be straight up front here and say that I'm not trying to imply that Ocelot is anything other than a guy, he's just also a guy who's playing a million roles (this is important) and lying to damn near everyone, including himself. He has some of the worst identity issues I've ever seen in a character, and that comes to a head in 4 where he literally isn't even *Ocelot* until the final moments of his life. So yes, for the sake of not writing War and Peace, I'm going to assume Ocelot is "just a guy" and come at this from a pure queer theory/media analysis standpoint, not a headcanon one.

So first it's really important to point out the order in which we see Ocelot through the series. In the timeline, the last time we see Ocelot before V is 3 (or PO which I haven't played due to its placement in canon-limbo, but Ocelot looks basically the same). So we see him go from A to B here.

I am going to say something potentially controversial: even before saw V ocelot, I thought 3 Ocelot looked like he was wearing drag *queen* makeup. I don't know whether it's intentional, or an attempt to circumvent the lower poly models and lower definition textures of the PS2, but the first image looks like someone who is going for a highly exaggerated, feminine cheek contour. Here's a few drag queens who, imo, do a very similar contour look:

Whether the color filter or the texturing of the PS2 or something else, the MGS3 version of Ocelot also has a look of mascara and frosted lipgloss (frosted lips being much more popular at the time of MGS3's original release than today, but alas).

So from that I was already very much primed to look for femininity in Ocelot's whole vibe. It was actually kind of jarring how much more rugged he is in V than in any of the previous games, to the extent that it sent up alarm bells in my head that something was going on.

I don't remember the moment that I went "hey, wait a minute," but it was certainly pretty early on. As someone who's been on tumblr a hella long time and remembers when we used to swap passing tips, the specific combination of facial features remind me of a very specific genre of "ftm makeup tutorials" that were also pretty contemporarily popular on tumblr. A very quick summary being mascara on the eyelashes and specific peach fuzz to give the impression of a squarer jaw and having more facial hair, as well as specific contouring to give a "masculine cheekbone." Most of these tips basically came directly from drag king makeup.

Gonna include some drag kings as well, some things to notice include the tendency towards using stubble as contouring and vice versa, the shaping of cheek contouring, and the tendency to accentuate mustache and sideburns.

I'm pretty bad at wording descriptions of hair and makeup so you'll have to forgive me for not going ham on explaining the similarities bc now we actually get to the interesting part which is: so fucking what? If this is true, if you take my word for it, what does it say about the text? If I want to make this argument to someone else, what can I say that will convince them that, even if it's not *intentional,* it's a valid and meaningful view of his character?

Like, you can make a character based on anything you want, but why does it matter whether Ocelot is based on drag either direction?

Ocelot's "drag"iness is multipurpose. One: he's queer. Like, I grant that he never comes out and says "I love 'Big "Naked 'John' Snake" Boss'" but we get a hell of a lot more confirmation that he's gay than we get straight confirmation for a lot of presumed-straight characters. I feel comfortable saying he's canon queer.

Two: it's a visual metaphor for being a double/triple agent. While he's literally performing several roles (KGB/GRU/CIA, or MSF/Real BB/US, or US/Patriots/BB, or anything in between), he's also visually playing two (or more) gender roles, a feminine man, a mannish woman, something neither or in-between. The implication of drag specifically is pretending to be something that he isn't (which he literally always is, holy shit, again, does he even know who he realiy is?).

And before anyone says "Well, if it's so important to his character, why did they wait until 3 to start doing it?" They didn't!!

This is THE most classically masculine that Ocelot ever looks. But there's still precious polygons invested into giving him long hair and a flowing coat. Working with sprites and low-poly models means having to very carefully select traits that you want to display on your character, and Ocelot's go into making him a cringefail cowboy.

The fact that he's a cowboy in itself is also pretty important to the whole gender/sexuality situation. I mean, Brokeback Mountain might not have been out yet, but the male-to-female ratio in the west meant a lot of men cozied up together on the frontier. Hell, hankey code comes from cowboy culture, with men wearing certain colors to announce who would take the "man" or "woman" role while square dancing.

I could go a lot into gender and how it works on a social/societal level in general and why that matters, but OOPS I have been writing this for a WHILE.

I was actually going to go a lot more into queer theory and gender in MGS in general but ngl, I could write a whole doctoral thesis on gender and how different characters perform or subvert gender. Because holy shit when you start peeling back the very thin macho facade of Kojima's work to do a feminist reading of it, boy howdy do you get. A whole lot to talk about. (ask me about death stranding sometime i dare you)

Basically what I'm trying to get across is that Ocelot has a lot of roles that he's playing and NOT playing, and more than a few of those are gender roles, which is very much visually symbolic of his character.

I am so sorry anon I have been thinking about him nonstop for a full year </3 I hope at least the first part of this answered your question about what features I see that scream drag to me.

So the Given manga ended today, and I felt like airing out my opinions on the last chapter and the series as a whole. Spoilers galore, possibly controversial opinions, and other stuff in a long essay below the cut.

Starting with what I thought of the last chapter: weakly executed but highly unsurprising that it was. A lot of things were left unsaid and unresolved, most of them issues pertaining to one of the main characters, Ritsuka. Remember back in one of the early chapters when Yayoi told Akihiko that “Ritsuka hasn’t been eating or sleeping properly, he’s just absorbed in his music”, a scene that was also kept in the anime’s fourth episode? Yeah, that. It’s been hinted at since then that he still doesn’t sleep well (like when he showed up at Hiiragi and Shizusumi’s school having finished the demo, heavily implying that he’d stayed up all night given the erratic look and vibe he gave off.

Then there’s his insecurities re: himself, Mafuyu, and his relationship with Mafuyu that were seemingly blown away once again by music. Music will always be there to save the day! Absolve all of these people of their responsibility to sort things out like normal people do, instead they just play some music and all is well again. Like magic! Wow. (This was sarcasm, by the way.)

Speaking of which, Mafuyu still never told Ritsuka anything about Yuki. Absolutely nothing. All this time, I felt like he had a responsibility to do so since Ritsuka was dragged into this mess first by Mafuyu who naïvely seemed to think that starting to date someone new would make him magically get over Yuki, yet it seemed to only make it worse and thus it made Ritsuka have to suffer. Then Ritsuka was dragged deeper into it by Hiiragi and Shizusumi who told him a few things about Yuki that Mafuyu should’ve been the one to tell Ritsuka, not Mafuyu’s childhood friends who didn’t know Ritsuka and also weren’t as close to Yuki as Mafuyu was.

The icing on the goddamn cake was the end of the chapter, was Mafuyu saying to Ritsuka “when we get back, let’s do it”. And it only just now hit me that this was the exact same thing Yuki told Mafuyu on the beach. Minus the bathroom bit.

First of all, weird callback. Second of all, cheap way to end it all off. I’ve felt since a long time ago that Kizu has gotten tired of the series and that’s why the story quality has dwindled drastically. But this just felt like her shrugging and saying “let’s just get this shit over with”. Which is a bit of an insult to the people who followed this series religiously either from the start or decided to tag along somewhere during its run.

One thing that also really irked me was the whole bit that happened after Hiiragi and Shizusumi came into Given’s room after their live performance post-debut. How Hiiragi says that Ritsuka “sometimes belongs to SYH” and how Ritsuka obviously didn’t even know this was a thing (isn’t this also a bit of a red flag, where his management goes behind his back and approves something in his stead?), and wasn’t gung-ho about it once it sunk in but agreed to do it anyway because he’s such a good fucking boy and I’m so upset on his behalf that it kind of paves the way for people to take advantage of him now that he’s a professional musician. Mafuyu and Ritsuka still clearly have things to sort out given how Mafuyu was jealous and aggravated when Hiiragi yapped about stealing Ritsuka from them and how Given had to do better to steal their man back. Unsurprisingly, communication is still lacking in the Given manga overall, and that’s where it’s also left unresolved at the very end.

(Remember when Haruki said that music was [all about] communication?)

There’s not much for me to say about the other characters in the series since they got their so-called “happy endings”. I’m very glad for Ugetsu that he got his happy ending, that he seems happy, like he’s moved on. In the promo art for the last chapter, there’s a mystery person standing next to Ugetsu, and while nothing is obviously confirmed- maybe he has a new love in his life?

In any case, he certainly looked happy in the last chapter and in previous chapters where he’s appeared since his breakup with Akihiko, and he arguably got the best ‘ending’ out of all of them. Haruki and Akihiko are moving in together which felt like a logical next step for them, and I’m glad things worked out for them. As for Shizusumi and Hiiragi... who the hell knows. Their entire arc was a mess, the way they got together screamed non-con and BL tropes galore. Holy cow. Yeah. Anyway!

As for the series overall, I’m struggling nowadays to form a single, coherent opinion. I really loved it up until chapter 19 when Akihiko sexually assaulted Haruki (that was basically where Kizu started picking up those BL tropes that at least I thought she would steer clear of... silly me) but then I still loved how he redeemed himself and how that arc ended. Then after chapter 28, things just went downhill for me and I haven’t liked the series as much at all since.

I heavily disliked the Hiiragi arc because of how it introduced things and then glossed them over, that so-called “sex scene” between Hiiragi and Shizusumi that I personally would call something else, the way Ritsuka’s entire character was shoved into the nearest bin (it seriously made me think that Kizu is the first mangaka I’ve stumbled upon who really hates the main character of her manga so much that she takes everything out on him as a result - whew!) and how he then just never got any sort of proper resolution to his story. I liked the first half of the manga, I guess, so in the end my opinion stays pretty wobbly. I’ve never shied away from admitting that I’m heavily Ritsuka-biased and I’ll stay that way. The boy deserved so much better than what he got and that’s one of my major takeaways, unfortunately. For a series that I once really liked, this certainly feels like a disappointing end.

To be honest I think that “gatekeeping” fandom is okay sometimes. I’m saying this as I am bombarded with shitty news articles about the new Amazon prime LotR show and anticipating a major fandom clash… As someone who will never support Amazon and fucking hates how they’re using their new show to make all their detractors seem like racists/sexists (despite how incredibly racist and abusive to PoC Amazon as a company is) and drum up good press to draw attention away from their recent human rights abuses and controversies… I reserve the right to not wholeheartedly welcome fans of the Rings of Power adaptation into my fandom.

I know other Tolkien fans who’ve watched (pirated) it and they’ve all told me it’s just not great in an adaptation sense. From what I’ve seen of the plot and casting it looks like it was made by someone who’s never read even a chapter of Tolkien, and the designs/costuming look uninspired. I’m usually someone who adores adaptations, even shitty superhero films from the early 2000s, but the general inaccuracy of this one did it in for me, and it being picked up by Amazon is the final nail in the coffin for me. No thank you, I’m not going to let this soul-sucking company capitalize on my nostalgia.

A slightly pettier point, but if anyone’s first and only interacting with second and first age Tolkien characters comes from RoP I do actually think they should pick up a book and read. Like no Celebrimbor isn’t some fucking ugly ass crusty old white man. He was a HOTTIE and he lived and served cunt and then he got crucified by his dark lord boyfriend. Fuck Jeff Bezos, if anyone tries that shit in our god-honoring ao3 tag I’m gonna kill someone. It’s gonna be like when someone thinks they’re an expert on a video game and you’re like “have you ever played it?” And they say “no I just watched a YouTube video”.

I’m normally a much, much kinder person and maybe I’m overreacting but holy shit I hate how people are acting like this show is a GOOD THING when it’s clearly a marketing ploy by Amazon to associate LotR with their company and therefore give them a never ending stream of income.

Well, I think there are a few different things going on here, but yes.

When a new adaptation comes out that's going to have a massive audience, it's important to be able to defend some little spaces for the existing fandom. AO3 book fandom tags are going to get misused and stuck on fic for the live action version (in the usual way adaptations play out anyway). Tumblr tags will be a freeforall. So it's down to recs lists, mailing lists, discord servers, DW communities, and the like to maintain a space for the quiet-but-long-lived version of the fandom while the storm of a new adaptation thunders by overhead.

That's true even if the adaptation isn't a travesty, and it doesn't preclude being nice to the n00bs and welcoming them in if they are interested in the pre-existing fandom. But being "nice" doesn't mean erasing all distinctions between versions of the fandom and canon or turning every space into a 101 For N00bs space.

I mean, I enjoyed movie LOTR fandom and thought most aspects of those movies were a decent adaptation (except for Helm's Deep, Faramir wanting the ring, and everyfuckingthing about Gimli, GRRRRRRR). But it was still the case that we movie fans overran Tolkien-themed spaces with our Legolas/Aragorn fic, and that this was not always great. LOL. Same deal with the many iterations of Sherlock Holmes, even aside from the OOC horror that is Sherlock.

There's gatekeeping like quizzing everyone on whether they're enough of a Real Fan™ and being an ass just because someone wasn't born early enough to get into fandom in whatever decade...

And then there's gatekeeping like declaring that not every space is for every thing.

We need the latter in order for little subcultures to thrive.

The Duffers trying to peddle the whole found family, outcasts band together arc is so fucking funny to me because:

Nancy was never an outcast, they just gave her that shitty 'preppy popular girl gets moral angst so becomes a badass gun wielding apocalyptic grunge princess overnight' arc and then literally never showed her at school again so even if she did become an outcast, you actually never see it. In fact, we see multiple times beyond that that she's still very much considered the polite, proper, middle-upper class small town girl by any of her peers who aren't The Gang.

Barb. Chubby shy girl always in the preppy princess' shadow as the holy voice of reason, invited along as nothing but the moral support so Nancy can get laid. Dead. Dead and forgotten by literally everyone except her parents and used as a character device for Nancy (and by extension her romance with Steve.)

Steve is only technically an outcast by association. Sure, he has that fight with Tommy, but Tommy and the dude always kissing ass in Tommy's shadow are the only ones we ever see actually like. Treating Steve any differently, arcade manager dude aside (who just does not give a shit about anyone else anyway.) If the Duffers had actually properly shown Steve at school like Nancy we would've seen that while he might not have been as popular, he definitely wouldn't be sat alone in the corner. I mean come on he was in Scoops Ahoy and still getting flirted with. If you actually peeled him away from The Gang for like five minutes he'd be top of the food chain again.

The actual outcasts themselves pick and choose who is and isn't allowed in The Gang and will immediately turn on each other the moment one of them doesn't meet the standard, as we clearly saw with Lucas, who literally just got into sport and made a few friends on the team. They turn on each other constantly, weaponize their knowledge of each other as and when it suits them, and clearly have a classification of what is and isn't the 'right' kind of outcast. (coughBillyHargrovecough.) Which is exactly the behavior they resent the 'normies' for.

Apropos Billy. The Duffers literally said "its about outcasts and found family and coming together against monsters both human and not" and then also said "except for the traumatised queer-coded abuse victim. We very very clearly want you to know he is the most evil of evil out there and his sole purpose is to get beaten up and die." They decided Steve Harrington couldn't die so they made his evil gay clone. The literal only way they could think of to make Billy "bad" was to have him shout at Lucas and beat up Steve. They said "his ass is too big for him to live but we're gonna ride it for the entire PR train."

Speaking of queer-coded outcasts and dying. I know you hate Eddie Munsen, but he was basically the Queer Canary 2.0. The Duffers really said "anyone who would not be on a Home and Garden magazine cover must be shot on sight." Joe and Joseph started getting a lil too homerotic and the Duffers started loading up the gun.

And controversial but Robin. I love love love Robin but its really like the Duffers said "we have to keep one queer alive to avoid the homophobia allegations" and then after months at the drawing board they just shrugged and said "why don't we just copy-paste Steve but change the formatting to lesbian?"

And like. Its been shown that the moment all these so-called outcasts are separated, suddenly, they're not really that outcast anymore! They're all growing up, getting hobbies, making new friends, realizing that they don't have quite as much in common as they thought they did. Will and Dustin are the only two who kind of stay on the hem of that original format.

I'm not even going to talk about whatever the fuck that was with Eleven running away to some fever dream Murder Goths™ secret club. Not even the Duffers want to talk about it. It genuinely makes me think of the Twilight baseball scene. Its like you know the vision they had in mind when they thought it up but then its like they asked AI to create it.

I still don't know why the ACOTAR world is patriarchal?

And I don't talk here about AuThOr's choice. More like the in-world explanation.

Because we know that for the Fae the One and only GOD is A GODDESS - The Mother. It seems like the genderswap of the Jewish/Christian/Islam GOD. (+ we know that AuThOr like to take inspiration from these sources)

Like:

The Mother = The God

The Cauldron = Holy Spirit?

You get the idea.

So by that logic shouldn't the fae world be like a matriarchy. A crooked mirror of our world. Where we see either:

a) genderswap problems from our world - males get slut-shame, they have rather few choices outside of marriage to a female, they don't have their own money etc.

b)there would be new different problems, and obstacles for Ferye to overcome that would come from that - for example, she would need to like instantly learn how to be a good speaker/negotiator, strategist, and planer because the fae world does not have physical war but like they battle on arguments and sick burns. (imagine rap battle UTM)

And if the fae world would be like this then we can get:

Possible High Ladies (or like its more common ones at least)(if we assume that this is not happening naturally in canon - Cresseida was seen to suggest that it happens but idk)

Tamlin (or Rhysnad or anyone) becoming High Lord instead of their sister/female cousin/aunt is like a HUGE scandal and a BIG obstacle in their rule. (+here death of Rhysand's sister might have an additional political point because she is technically the heir)

Having ALL 7 male rules of Prythian at the same time is like one a million type of situation.

Amarantha might have like propaganda program where she presents herself as the chosen one of The Mother to "MAKE PRYTHIAN GRATE AGAIN" and like priestesses supporting her and that would be a HUGE point in the second book + reason for Ferye to trust Ianthe because she wasn't one of a false priestess (then Ianthe of course still betrayed them but it would hit harder)

contras to the human patriarchal world that Ferye grows up in. That can give her additional freedom which we know Ferya likes.

or it is played as a power move by Amarantha and Rhysand here IS ACTUALLY forced to do this to Ferye and really feels really bad.

Ferye being locked up by Tamlin - IF it's still happening - to be like a hugely controversial thing that makes actual social unrest, starts debates, controversies (High Lord power move for the equality of males or blasphemy that proves he and the males CANOT be trusted with power).

+ And it would help Ferye with her quest in the ACOWAR

But it won't have to. Ferye could live her best life and the only thing that bothers her (destroys their relationship) would be Tamlin being cold (he can have like second thoughts about marriage because he doesn't want to lose the freedoms that he has as a single High Lord)

or he still plays his part of the happy groom but because of Ferye's dementi power, she could like see/feel it and is heartbroken.

Lucien's crisis over how Ianthe treats him. (Ferya see it in him and they bond over it)(Tamlin would where either don't see it because he is training to fit the social expectations or see it and be unable to do something about it or see it and do something about it- it depends on how much agnst you want and what you thing of Tamlin).

Lucien, Tamlin and Ferye can bond over it.

it would paint Rhysnad in a better light for the people from the beginning as "a devoted, good male that just got the wrong spiritual guardians because males can be super silly it's in their nature"

Beorn is being EXTRA careful in being a cruel bastard, especially towards his wife

+ or having Tragic Backstory™ where he was horribly mistreated by the system and/or female and he swore to change it to a Better World™ (here we have the option of Good Beorn = Vanserra brothers being spoiled little shits (in that he may think that Lucien got like rape/groomed by his lover "vile female" and like lose it and not listing to him and kill her still) or Bad Beorn = He is using propaganda on 1000000% and still is cruel, horrible and nothing really change but it's just harder for Beorn which is better) it doesn't matter if he is lying or not.

Rhysand's mother and sister, Tamlin's mother, Lady of Autumn can have a name that would be nice.

King of Hybern and Mortal Queens alliance would have another layer.

In the fandom's use of the word for them, Fell!Sans is often referred to by their source name (mustard), while Murder!Sans uses the word for dust instead of ketchup. By combining mustard and dust, their combination is spelled "Dustard".

Q. Were you the first to come up with the Dustard combination?

A. Yes and no, the combination itself existed before that. If you're referring to the two-person (murder!sans, UF!sans) combination based on Dusttale's unofficial ending, then yes.

Q. What inspired you to create Dustard?

C: My interests have always been limited to the underground of Dusttale, but about two years and a few months ago I became interested in the multiverse and thought about meeting him and other characters. The result was… wow!

F: The Undertale au universe is a big one, and we all have fun creating stories, but Dusttale's Murder!sans, cut off from the multiverse, has been alone for a long time. What were the BLs that took you by surprise last year?

i won't lie, i wasn't surprised that i enjoyed kinnporsche, but to the extent that i did (and of course still do), that was kinda surprising. they had me paying to watch a livestream of gay™ the musical, and i'm not even mad. it was my first thai bl, so, oh lord, my standards were raised.

last twilight in phuket - controversial, but i think i prefer it to i told sunset about you (though itsay is so so good). i didn't know 13.43 mins could make me feel so much, but there we are, and i'm very happy to be in that situation.

What were the BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with last year?

oh i have some very controversial opinions on this–

- there's one that everyone really loves that i didn't finish, thought it was trying to be bigger than what it was (if that makes sense), and just found it really... boring. it got to one plot line and i'd had enough– though i'm willing to give it a re-try because, granted, i was in a kinnporsche mourning period when it came out. im not even gonna name it because i swear everyone i follow loves it (welp-)

- to my star

again, controversial, but i haven't seen this being talked about as much as the last one. i haven't seen s2, but oh my god, i'm sorry but i was so bored, and this was before kinnporsche so my standards weren't even insanely high, yeahhh

- blueming

it wasn't *bad*, but the way everyone hyped up made me think it was gonna be something really special, yeah i was definitely disappointed

didn't finish. arranged marriage is never my favourite, but i'd heard so many people say how good it was, and sometimes you have to trust the crowd. i didn't find that here. i may well re-try it, along with the unnamed show further up, but yeahhhh. best part was perth, and he genuinely might be the only reason i try it again.

i'd been without a favourite show for a little while, which is so so unlike me. i tend to need something to consume me and kinnporsche just did that. first ep and holy fucking shit, *that* is what i'm talking about. i hadn't actually heard of it until an edit came up on instagram, and i instantly downloaded iqiyi, found ep 1 and 2 were out, binged those, and fell in love really

when i say it became my favourite show just from the first episode, i truly mean that. it was the biggest power move of a first episode and ughdhdh perfect <33

i've tried (and will continue to try) to convince my mates to watch it. i have been successful once with the whole show. a few of my mates just know vegaspete as KFCock, but yknow a win is a win, they are aware of their existence, which i'll gladly take.

- mafia, but *sometimes* make it wholesome. and then add a hearty dose of PAIN. perfect :D,, i know i've already said it, but i'll say it again it's consumed me, and i'm so grateful. i had some of the worst exams when it was coming out, and kinnporsche genuinely got me through each week, kept me smiling, made everything just a bit more bearable, and i am forever grateful for that.

strangers from hell

- what do you mean it's not a bl. of course it is. whatever moon-jo and jong-woo have going on is most definitely *not* heterosexual. also there was way more chemistry between those two than jong-woo and ji-eun. if you're looking for a comfort psychological thriller, this is it :D - i mean it's the most wholesome show i've ever watched, just two guys bonding over shared interests and falling in love (aww)

till the world ends

- on my knees begging someone to watch it– it's really pretty, made me cry, from a very small film company and eee i love it

i told sunset about you (& last twilight in phuket)

- so so aesthetic and pretty and ughfhhf– last twilight in phuket is maybe one of the prettiest thing i've seen. itsay is also so so pretty. HOWEVER, for the sake of your own sanity, don't watch i promised you the moon. i mean ep 1 is really good, but after ep 3 and maybe ep 2? hell naw

For some reason I feel like sharing that one of the first times I (the host) regressed was because I got a Traumatic Backstory Memory™ (I'm a fictive for context) and it freaked me out enough to trigger regression </3

Luckily one of our caretakers was there, along with a few of our online friends, to help but it sure was an Experience.

I have more 4TOWN headcanons >:)

Robaire is the charming one, everyone likes him, he’s just a really cool guy

Perfectly fits the leader role: he’s level headed, humble and considerate but strict when he needs to be (he’s usually the one who has to reel in Aaron T.)

Very educated, always willig to try and learn new things, whether it be about languages, music or art

Him and Aaron Z. like to hang out somewhere quiet and do their own things as they don’t need to talk to enjoy each others company

Aaron Z is the mysterious brooding bad boy and a bit quiet and stand-offish, seemingly too cool for everything

He’s actually just misunderstood and like really chill, even shy. He’s definitely the most quiet during interviews and prefers to just listen to the others talk

Has a bit of trouble expressing himself properly which is also part of the reason he doesn’t talk that much

He’s very tall, befitting for someone who plays basketball

Jessie is the heartthrob of the group, a soft boy™ (also kind of prince charming vibes from Shrek lmaoo but I swear I actually really like Jessie)

He cares a lot about his appearance , so he has a lot of hair products, plucks his eyebrows and work out regularly

Veery flirty; he flirts with the camera, with hosts and with his bandmates. He loves to compliment others or touch them just to see the reaction he gets

Also the most controversial one as he has had the most scandals involving ex lovers etc. He tends to be kind of a playboy and his relationships don’t last that long

When he’s frustrated he either vents to Taeyoung or locks himself up in an atelier for a few hours and paints or does pottery

Taeyoung is an absolute sweetheart and very adorable. (Lots of Aegyo) He gets babied by the others even though he’s almost 18 y/o (Aaron Z in particular seems to have a soft spot for him because he finds him very cute but he also kind of envies Taeyoungs emotional maturity)

Because of his love for fostering I’d imagine that he takes on a bit of a caregiver role in the group, he has a very positive aura that makes people gravitate towards him, so the others usually come to him when they’re not in a good mood, he doesn’t judge them and is very understanding

affectionate with his bandmates, loves to hold their hands, hug them, or give compliments, which leaves the others a bit flustered (they’re not used this much open affection due to their cultural difference)

Has a lengthy skincare routine and loves to experiment the most with style, makeup and hair colors

He’s also the most open with his emotions and feelings, so when he’s sad he has no problem with crying or when he’s really excited he gets all giddy

He may or may not have a huge crush on Jessie because Jessie is a huge flirt and Tae is a hopeless romantic.

____ My blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most):

At the moment? Aryll Haywood, my version of Link's sister. Of all my OCs, she invades my thoughts the most, and is- quite honestly- probably the most fleshed out of all of the characters I've ever created. I think it helps that the very essence of her setting gave her an obvious life conflict to bounce off of... aka the loss of her entire town and family to the Calamity. There's a lot of juice to play with there, in imagining how an 11 year old girl would try (and fail) to cope with that. I can't wait to eventually share her full story- just a few days ago, I started officially writing the prologue for that long fic of mine!

My scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped):

ASDshgjhdg is it a crime to ALSO say Aryll for this one? I would very much love to pick her up in my arms and swing her around like a parent with a tineee precious baby ;w;;;;;;;

Not really sure I have any other OCs who would count as "baby," a lot of the others are downright snarky motherfuckers, lmao.

I've grown quite attached to Arwel Haywood (Link and Aryll's father) while writing a bit of fic from his POV, (A FIC I STILL NEED TO FINISH, auUGHHHH! ! !!!!), and feel I don't think about him as much as I should. I need to flesh out his personality a bit more. So far, though... I am big uWU at the thought of him just,,, really, really loving his kids. I think he does have the tendency to push Link too hard too young with their training, and perhaps spends time with his son just a tad more than his daughter due to their shared interest in swordplay, but oh god does he do his genuine best with them, and I am HUGE a aAAA

Taafeite, a fusion of my OC Jean Maverick and Steven Universe. They don't show up in their world very often- thus "obscure fave-" but when they do, it's sure to be quite a show. They're a big personality and very much enjoy being in the spotlight. Please don't underestimate their weapon. It may look like a glorified pizza cutter staff, but that bitch is fucking sharp.

My poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave):

Hmm. I don't think any of my SU or BotW OCs fit this category. The only OC I have that even remotely fits is... a VERY old pull... Aster, a Gravity Falls multiverse OC I had at one point but never did anything concrete with. Aster... was the one who was a mercenary working for Bill, charged with hunting Ford down during those 30 years he was lost in the multiverse. They... definitely kill, and definitely do MANY morally wrong things, but there's a depressing backstory to be told, and they eventually do experience Character Development™ and become a less Problematic person, ahahah.

I was a Very Casual ‘oh my moots are listening to them I guess ill satisfy my curiosity and listen too’ listener of bangtan in the ye olde days until I heard this song and absolutely lost all my marbles. like I remember when they first debuted and my dash was...full of gifs of their mvs.....and like I was a H U G E fan of bap and block b and exo back then and really didnt care for bts’ sound or image or the idol hiphop nonsense back then. and then there was all this drama and fan wars and controversy which further turned me off and. god. high school shirley was So Fucking Pretentious like I liked epik high and tiger jk and thought I was Peak Hiphop and I didnt care for other tomfoolery.

I became a fan when I Need U rolled out and then hyyh2 dropped and this song came up and absolutely shattered everything I knew about music and lyricism to my classical trained ears. like I cant fully explain to you how absolutely yoongi is a musical genius he fucking???? did that!!!! and made it sound good??????? what fucking hogwash witchcraft bullshit????????????? (it also doesnt escape my notice that one of the few songs that jin opens was the song that signed me up as an army thank you king we dont deserve you)

2. Awake - Wings (2017)

this song fucking tore me to shreds. like the album dropped during a full day of econ and math lectures so I couldn't actually listen until I got back to the dorms, so my roommates set up the mv and album for me as soon as I got home (after a whole bunch of teasing and screaming in the gc) and I was still mentally recovering from The Kiss(tm) (srsly I screamed loud enough our RA ran into our dorm thinking we were being murdered) and then awake happened and I just.....emotionally eviscerated. fuck. it hit me so hard.

this is also really special to me bc I became a hardcore Seokjin stan after hearing this live at the Wings tour in Newark (I know!!! who was I before I became Enlightened and stanned the icon of our generation the king of the universe kim seokjin ah wow poor nirvana-less past shirley its ok you were valid bby soon you will understand) and then seeing them win the MAMAs and them look so shocked and crying made me realize I was in this bangtan shit for life.

3. Epilogue: Young Forever - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016)

this song came out right towards the end of my freshman year in college when I had a lot of shit going on in my life and it kinda felt like the world was collapsing around me no matter what........and.......not to be dramatic............this song came along and uplifted me into a better place. they came during a time where I was barely hanging on and said ‘its ok. we understand. you got this.’ every time I heard this song it felt like I was being swaddled in that fluffy sunshine yellow blanket jimin has in serendipity and I was safe and loved and cared for.

fuck I still cant even listen to ‘dreams, hope, forward, forward’ bc the korean for ‘forward’ sounds so much like a mixture of chinese and japanese and it felt so hopeful.....like I was being supported by people who sincerely wanted the best for me even if they didnt know me and thats......just such a lovely feeling to have. music really transcends all barriers. thank you BTS.

4. Intro: Never Mind - The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, pt. 2 (2015)

this fucking song defined my entire freshman year. it got me my first crazy college story (my first friend in college and I were jamming and yelling to this song when the ra from the floor above thought we were doing beer pong with like 2 dozen other people and literally stormed our room when really it was just the two of us and some microwaved instant ramen and our leaning tower of notes acting as the dj tower), my first friends in college, my first bts bias, my first taste of feeling like finding your musical soulmate, my first understanding of truly respecting and analyzing and contemplating an artist for their craft outside of doing it in school......I might have been already been in the kpop scene way before bangtan, but it was really truly bangtan that I truly grew up with if that makes sense

fun fact: you know the memory hack where if you listen to one song and cram, then you think of the song if ur stuck and then BAM you remember? kinda like chewing the same flavor of gum during ur exams as when you are studying but better for the environment? well yea. I did that during my finals that year and I Really Fucking Annoyed all my neighbors by rapping (super badly) to never mind (yes even the korean. yes I may be Asian but I have No Talent speaking in korean. so yes you can imagine how terrible I would sound rapping in korean) on all 8 of my written finals (important tip from future shirley: the life of a double major is hell. don't do it. dont be like me. learn from me. you will d i e)

5. So Far Away ft. Jin, Jungkook - BTS Festa 2017

this is the song that sings me to sleep at night and keeps me sane. god where do I even begin. ok. so agust d? the best thing to have happen to barely adult shirley. thank you min yoongi for embracing all of us and letting us into even the dark ugly parts of your personal struggles. suran? my actual queen. ive loved her since she featured on callin in love and mannequin w beenzino and primary and when I heard she was back and featured on a yoongi song? I fucking lost it. best song on the album next to tony montana and the last.

anyways, set scene: a freshly minted jin stan barely adulting shirley who hardly has her life together, and festa came and dropped this masterpiece in her lap. cue: cathartic crying for like 5 hours fresh from a semi-serious car accident and a bunch of medical complications and family issues. cue: latching onto this song as an emotional crutch, and later, emotional support song. I listen to this song at least once a day. I will go off to war for this song.

yes the majority of this list is all music yoongi has written and didn't include any of the songs in the last 2 series.....listen bangtan came during a very specific 2 year period where I was really not doing well and then saved me (save me I need ur love before I fall.) im really thankful they were with me during that time and, like that dude said in the commentary, their music is really going to be with me for the rest of my life and it makes me so proud and gratified that they have touched millions of lives and made them even a smidge brighter. thank you for giving me a path through the darkness, thank you for picking me up and encouraged me through the hard patches, thank you for giving me a family and joy and belief in not only myself but in others as well, thank you for being there for all of us. thank you.
