Hi! I’m interested in writing a realistic teen fiction novel set in high school, focusing on multiple students and their everyday lives both within and outside of school. I want the story to feel like you're reading someone's diary, similar to shows like Freaks and Geeks, Skam, and My Mad Fat Diary. Sooo, any prompts or ideas to help me get started? Or advice? Anything will do! Thank you so much!
The challenge or writing realistic teen fiction when you're not a teenager is quite high. You always run the risk of outdated references, incorrect slang, and overall awkward writing.
DO go for universal experiences. Teenagers throughout the ages deal with the challenges of dating, parental conflict, pressures to get the highest scores or hang out with the right crowd. Kids are going to go through the same experiences no matter how much the world changes. Tap into those emotions and think about what you went through as a teen. How do you project those experiences and emotions onto your character? Could you give them similar challenges? Put them through situations you managed to avoid? Lean on what you know.
DO treat your characters with respect. Yes, even the guy who smokes too much weed has a much richer inner life than you may put to paper. You don't have to give every character a ten-page backstory and a showcasing scene, but do be sure to give depth to both your main characters and antagonists. Don't brush off their concerns or values - even if you think fighting over a prom date is silly in hindsight - as unimportant.
DO focus on setting and specifics. Where your story is based and what's going on in the environment is going to vastly impact what issues your teen characters will face. Some teens may face issues with drugs and environmental violence. Others will have more experience with dealing with online bullying. A lot of teens are far more used to LGBTQ peers and more accepting environments, but that doesn't mean issues of racism, transphobia, and homophobia have gone away. Where you set your story and what's going on in the environment around it are going to be really important when it comes to coming off as genuine.
And a few don'ts...
DON'T chase the latest trends. There are a lot of things that will date your work within the year, if not months. Twitter is nearly as dead as MySpace, no one says 'on fleek' anymore, and the latest iPhone is not going to sound impressive if someone reads your story two years from now. That isn't to say you should social media or cell phones entirely - that would be silly - or that you should try to disguise them by using some made-up name. Neither would really work. If TikTok is going to be in your characters' lives, talking about it even with a casual line is a better option than pretending it doesn't exist. But if you hinge your plot entirely on TikTok drama, and by the time your book or story comes out no one uses TikTok anymore, you'll be shooting yourself in the foot. Play it safe and lean into generics if your story heavily involves online behavior ('some stranger is sending me DMs' versus 'I'm being bullied via my Discord server's soundboard').
DON'T appropriate experiences that aren't yours. It's really tempting to project what you feel about current events into teen characters, and it's not wrong to write really passionately about something that affects both you and your teenage characters, but think it through. Does your white character single-handedly resolve racism in their school? That's just not going to happen. Is your character's heroic moment tackling the school shooter before he kills someone? Take a long step back and think about what these moments mean for the teens that go through them. You run the real risk of making their lives seem trite and meaningless by presenting an easy solution to a complex problem. A teenage hero with a sword may save a kingdom in a fantasy novel, but in the modern world, dealing with bigotry and violence are complicated issues that require solidarity, collective action, and allyship, not savorism.
DON'T cut corners by making your characters 'really into 80s music' or similar anachronistic interests. Listen, I know this is painful, but as popular as Stranger Things is, your teens characters are probably not listening the Best of the 80s on a regular basis when not in the car with their parents (or, uh, grandparents). They're likely not really into TLC, I doubt they can name all the Spice Girls. You may think you're giving them a funny quirk by having them be really into something you know a lot about, but you risk alienating your audience. I've put down more than one YA book because the author couldn't explain why her teen character loved U2, but couldn't name Taylor Swift if she tried. This... doesn't work. You may not listen to Doja Cat or Charli XCX, but you're doing yourself and your characters a disfavor in not considering who the artist or actor they care about is, and why. Figuring out what your characters are into can be really worth the insight it brings. You can, of course, skip pop culture for the most part if your plot doesn't touch it - but don't believe for a second your characters don't know who Ariana Grande is, c'mon.
Angie Thomas's THE HATE THAT U GIVE is a classic for a lot of reasons, but a big part of it is that she's able to juggle all of the above without coming off as insincere or contrite. Her main character knows that dealing with police violence is complicated. Tupac Shakur's music plays an important part of the book because it's relevant to the character and her experiences, not just because it's something the author knew well. And Starr Carter didn't save the world from the problems plaguing her, but she did take a stand against them. Angie Thomas's work is a masterclass in understanding how teenagers think even if you aren't one, and I'd recommend reading them to get a feel for how to handle a teenage voice.

2023 - The year of Japanese BLs (My 2023 BL wrapped)
After plenty of good BL releases in 2022, I was hoping 2023 would keep the pace and give us even better content. However, I turned out to be very disappointed. In my opinion, the majority of the shows were blank, superficial and had really bad script and bad acting, so there were very few of them I've managed to finish, mostly Japanese ones.
One thing that really draws me towards Japanese productions is that the stories are believable and portrayed in a natural way. Even when the acting has big "anime" reactions, they usually fit in the context. Kieta Hatsukoi, for instance, explores this type of reactions very well and they don't feel cringe at all, unlike most Thai BLs and some Korean ones as well.
Nationalities apart, there's an obvious gold rush that is happening in the BL industry. A lot of companies realized that BL does make profit and are producing a lot of shows, poorly written, poorly casted, but that's ok since people are still consuming for the skinship, right? There's a public for that, so why invest in good, but a little more expensive stories?
Anyway, this is my opinion of course, as a regular consumer of the genre, and I can't help to be disappointed. But enough of the complaining, right? Let's go to the list of my 2023 favorites!
Top 3:
The eight sense
Tumblr media
This BL has entered my list of all-time favorites. Fresh and mature, the chemistry between the leads is amazing. Jihyun's innocent approach to life contrasts really well with Jaewon's harsh perspective and I love the way both of them bond while helping each other to evolve. The feeling of the show reminds me a bit of Skam, another all-time favorite, and I found out that it really was one of the materials they used for inspiration. If you haven't watched it yet, stop everything you're doing and go watch The eighth sense right now.
2. If it's with you
Tumblr media
I loved this show so much! The manga adaptation was beautifully done, they really paid attention to the details. It's a very sweet, heart-warming and honest story. There's no "instant love”: the relationship between them is built little by little, through sincere conversations and empathy. The series invites you to be more honest with yourself and to not be afraid of showing your true self.
3. My Beautiful Man 2 and My Beautiful Man: Eternal
Tumblr media
Well, it's somehow funny that I put this BL on the list, because I hated the first season of My Beautiful Man. However, the second season and the movie explore the motives behind the characters' actions in a deeper way, so the viewer can better understand the relationship dynamic. One thing that I really like about this story is that, although there is a worship behavior from Hira towards Kiyoi, Hira's life is not all about Kiyoi. In the same way, despite the fact that Kiyoi enjoys to be worshiped, he's also unsure about Hira's feelings: does Hira love the perfect, godlike image of Kiyoi he created inside his head or does he love the true Kiyoi, the human being with flaws?
Honorable mentions:
Our Dining Table
Tumblr media
A great slow-burn which approaches the fact that true family is the one you choose, so sweet that almost made me die of too much cuteness.
I Can't Reach You
Tumblr media
A very sweet friends-to-lovers story, which is now on Netflix!
Love Tractor
Tumblr media
A fresh and funny countryside love story. I just love how Yechan is so hyped when it comes to Seonyul. This man must be kept in a jar, protected from all the badness in the world.
Conclusion
Well, although I believe 2023 wasn't the best year for BLs, it did give us some true gems, more productions and more visibility. I've seen news about Kdrama actors working on BL projects that will be released in 2024, so I guess we're having some next-level good content this year.
So that was it for this BL wrapped. I hope you all had great holidays and that 2024 will be full of blessings to all of us! Bye, bye!

A Review of Skam FR Season 3 in 2023
THINGS I LIKED 》
▪︎ The stuff w/Lucas' mom & dad-it felt a tad more in depth than some other versions
▪︎ Their chemistry
▪︎ Side characters- I like the integration and excited to learn more as I go on
▪︎ More Lucas w/the girlsquad (Lucas & Imane/ Lucas & Daphne 🖤🖤)
▪︎ Mental illness-the tone feels different, and the context for this version really leans into Eliott's feelings of isolation all to lead up to that scene of Lucas finding him (wish they would've had more time to go deeper with that, though)
DIDN'T LIKE 》
▪︎ The ending felt rushed (last ep. disappointing)
▪︎ (Sometimes scenes hit you right in the gut & are done so right), and other times it's so half-baked like they attempted to serve up a large meal & they didn't cook it- it's like I know big scenes that are coming, but they feel rushed under the circumstances/ certain stuff would not make sense in this version and it feels like things happened w/out enough development imo (but this is mainly for the first half)
▪︎ Why does the "cheating" feel so much more cruel & simultaneously it doesn't feel justified for the girls to be not understanding? There were times where Lucas & Eliott basically said 'F you' but it also felt too much, for Chloe in particular, to react so harshly (in some instances she was overreacting for what had been established in their relationship). [Eliott's gf pretty much summed it up: they were envious, and that's pretty much it in this version].
FAVORITE SCENES 》
Painting
Lucas running to/finding Eliott in their reunion-that one hit right in the feels
Minute-by-Minute-so glad they used it
The 'kissing other girls party scene'-well played
GENERAL THOUGHTS 》
This "Even"/ Eliott seems more... open..upbeat(?) than Even to me; Lucas is more confident, or maybe bold, than Isak and it changes a lot of aspects of their relationship, which is not a critique but just an observation.
I wasn't really feeling this season as much until like episode 5. The angst was so good; I preferred that much more and seeing how they reacted was more interesting to me than their cute scenes in the 1st half of the season.
Sometimes they do just get it so so right w/how heartbreaking scenes are because of the context & new interpretation...
-The boat trespassing
-Lucas crying to his roommates
-Lucas texting Eliott to stop sending him drawings, which leads to
-> the scene of Eliott being found at his spot
Overall, I enjoyed it. I like the artistic feel of Skam France, and think that those scenes are where they excel the most. I think I'll prefer them as an established couple once they show up in other seasons vs the development of their relationship as odd as that may sound.

I'm still relatively new to the world of BL and not fully immersed in it yet either so I could potentially be working off only partial (or even slightly incorrect) information here BUT
Why do there seem to be so many remakes in the world of BL? Don't get me wrong, I know there are plenty in the non-BL sphere too (Boys Over Flowers seems to be a prefect example of a drama that has been remade by multiple countries about 5000 times) but it does feel like it happens more frequently in BL and I'm wondering why that is, especially when the shows they pick to remake are often considered classics or have their own very distinctive character that's... not necessarily conducive to a positively received remake.
Does it just feel this way because BL is a much smaller pool so it's easier to encounter remakes of shows we already know? Or is it because each BL producing country wants their own version of a hit BL series once they know it has a chance to be a success? Or is there another reason all together that I'm missing?
So, cross-culture adaptations of other work exist everywhere in media. It's not unique to BL. Every day I wake up and find that a new European country has decided to adapt Skam. The USA network show Eyewitness is an adaptation of Norwegian show. Shameless was originally a UK show. Same for Queer as Folk. The Cleaning Lady on Fox is an adaptation of an Argentine work. Being Human was adapted by SyFy channel from the UK. Here's a wiki page on this just focusing on America.
Coffee Prince is a popular (to put it mildly) Korean drama that has been adapted multiple times by other nearby cultures.
So, adaptations are fairly normal. We just notice it in BL because of the genre aficionados. Besides, Japan is the origin country and it's interesting to see what some of their beats look like interpreted in other cultures.
Also, it's hard to sell romance. BL is also a niche genre. They'll rely on any bit of familiarity to get the buzz going on a project. Even my doubts about My Love Mix Up will make people curious about it because Gemini and Fourth just picked up huge popularity from Moonlight Chicken and My School President. The fact that some of us are doubting them means people who love them are going to be even more excited because it indicates that GMMTV is putting a lot of trust in them. It also means that Kieta Hatsukoi fans are likely going to cross over in the first week at least even if it's just to judge the show.
Adaptations are just good business sense for both parties. The Japanese team gets to monetize their IP further, and it often leads to secondary purchases and engagement with the source content.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by the super talented @theawkwardterrier
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
54
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
985,499 😅
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently SKAM. In the past I've written for: Call Me By Your Name, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, You're the Worst, Veronica Mars, and New Girl. I've also written a bunch of one-shots for Yuletide, mostly for films.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?*
Rest Easy (SKAM, Isak/Even, Nordic Noir AU, 18 chapters, Rated E, 168K, complete)
The Boyfriend Experience (SKAM, co-written with @irazor, Isak/Even, Gentle Sci-fi Love Story AU**, 21 chapters, Rated E, 177K, complete)
III. Rondo: Allegretto Moderato (Call Me By Your Name, Elio/Oliver, Post-Canon AU, 6 chapters, Rated M, 33K, complete)
A Lord's Sauce (SKAM, Isak/Even, Food Critics AU, 6 chapters, Rated T, 20K, complete)
1 Thing (SKAM, Isak/Even, Friends With Benefits AU, 6 chapters, Rated M, 31K, complete)
*I feel like this is crazily inaccurate. In terms of hits, The Boyfriend Experience is far and away the leader of the pack.
Lately, I've been getting so many guest kudos and I hate that I don't know if they're legit or bots run amok. I've gotten some fantastic comments from guests without AO3 accounts, so I'm reluctant to shut them out, but that might be what the future holds.
**This is a gross oversimplification of what kind of AU The Boyfriend Experience really is. All I can say is: trust us.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes. Sometimes I'm a little late in replying but I will reply. If someone took the time to read my story and tell me how they felt about it, then I want to respond to them. Say thank you.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I'm not a sad ending fic writer. Early on in my fic writing days, I worked on a non-chronological Veronica Mars fic series and a one-shot in that series, The Teeth by the Shoulder, had an angsty final chapter. That story was meant to connect with the one following, and what came next wasn't angsty at all. BUT, unfortunately, it didn't read that way and readers were like wtf, GC??? That was a structural experiment that didn't quite work. It happens. I still like the story though and how it sets up the one after. A noble failure.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh gosh, most of them are pretty happy, weirdly enough. Probably Rest Easy, because the happy ending was a departure from the Scandinavian Noir genre and I felt it was pretty earned.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I've gotten some weird things.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do. What kind? I don't know. The kind with feelings, I suppose. I think sex writing is a great tool for revealing character. That's usually the best kind.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I wrote one tiny crossover for Veronica Mars and New Girl (who famously share an actor, a fact that in typical-me fashion, I did NOT take advantage of) called Legs Up To Her Waist (The French Have a Phrase for It Remix) for a remix challenge. I think it's a lot of fun, I got to delve a little into my Raymond Chandler fixation.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Probably lines here and there, fanon, but not whole stories. I think they're considered too weird by the general population.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! My Handmaid's Tale fic, We Must Refuse to Disappear has been translated into Russian.
I also have a SKAM story, A Lord's Sauce, that was translated into Italian as part of Fandom Trumps Hate. I hope to post that before the end of the year.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, quite happily, The Boyfriend Experience with the wonderful @irazor.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
I don't play favorites. I am enjoying writing Isak/Even now. Probably because they have such a good foundational story to work from for AU purposes.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The last two chapters of my CMBYN series, Piano Sonata in G Major, "Pense-bête", are so removed from fic expectations (one half of the ship is barely present/there's another, albeit temporary, love interest in one chapter, other nuanced themes are explored in the other) and are so labor-intensive. Every time I look at what I have drafted, I feel exhausted. I am not currently in a place where I can work on it, but I would like to finish it someday. So I can't say for sure that I won't do it, just not anytime soon.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Some nice language, in-character dialogue. Interest in improving.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Simplifying. Proofreading grammar.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's a LOT of work. However, I was very lucky when I was writing my CMBYN stories, which feature French and Italian dialogue. I got a tremendous amount of help from some lovely people.
That's partly the reason I haven't continued writing them. I don't like bugging people about translations. It's one thing to spend time writing stories, it's quite another to drag people into the vortex. Free labor is still labor.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
New Girl. Great readers, awesome betas. Really great place to start.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I have a lot of love for my co-written fic with @irazor, The Boyfriend Experience and my Nordic Noir story, Rest Easy.
- O -
Tagging @irazor, @imminentinertia, @cheesybadgers, @htbthomas, @khaotunqs, @codswalloping

hi! idk if someone asked this already but who are your top skam couples :o
someone has not! there are three i feel particularly attached to though
incantava / i feel aaaaabsolutely crazy about these two. in my opinion they're the best couple out of every single skam adaptation combined. skam italia in general was a series which while it had a lot of issues somehow managed to strike gold with the execution of its version of noorhelm and i like to think giancarlo and bernadetta were instrumental to that. like giancarlo himself said “edoardo and eleonora are very mature characters. their relationship is mature. they dialogue with one other. there hasn’t been a love scene so far, precisely, to celebrate their relationship, their union. there’s love, maturity and so much respect" and i don't think any other pair of noorhelm actors ever verbalized that about their characters. noorhelm's narrative is a difficult one to execute without the wilhelm character looking like a piece of shit even if only briefly but there were these tiny nuances skam italia added bc there was so much emphasis on edoardo's respect for and reverence of eleonora even when he was upset with her. he's the only wilhelm who apologizes to eleonora for what happened to her before the grand reunion kiss and if memory serves the only one who actually dialogues with her at all when she's trying to win him back rather than him simply walking away without a word. it's that emphasis on dialogue between them that constantly drew me in and made me feel like i was watching a relationship between two people who actually grew with each other
zoenne / the only other noorhelm i truly grew to love! albeit for slightly different reasons. where the maturity within incantava's relationship was focused in their dialogue with each other i think zoenne's maturity was focused in their accountability to each other. esp senne's accountability to zoe. every wilhelm tends to think with his heart before his head but beyond the gang fight incident there's not much they actually have to be accountable for and they still tend to come off a bit dickheaded. senne is someone who to me came off less so. similarly to edoardo (and alejandro albeit i'm not as attached to norandro personally) you could tell senne really listened to what zoe had to say and internalized it and acted upon it. so when he recognized what his brother had done to her it wasn't only about saying sorry but also about supporting her to file a case against him with the police. when he lived with zoe it wasn't only about living there for her but also about demonstrating a presence and compassion for her roommates and their problems as much as her own. when zoe broke up with him bc he pushed her too hard to fight the case it wasn't only about missing her but also about recognizing what his support of her actually needed to look like. he genuinely grew as a person rather than remaining stagnant and isn't that poignant considering what he pointed out about humans and their tendency to evolve at the end of season one? i realize i haven't talked as much about zoe here but ofc her holding him accountable to all of these things and standards of a relationship was what made them compelling to watch together. they were a great exercise in conflict resolution so despite there being road bumps those road bumps were undeniably worthwhile
virugo / almost every version of vilde and magnus is literally terrible. like some versions of skam do manage to do good by their noora and vilde's relationship with each other so you don't feel supremely peeved but maybe mildly annoyed by the fact that vilde ends up with a complete dunce who simply happened to crush on her long enough to where she could reciprocate when she got over wilhelm. but skam españa which fortunately happens to be probably the most healthy depiction of skam dynamics as a whole (next to druck) decides to actually do something with its vilde and magnus dynamic bc it makes the genius decision to instate viri as a main character. so you get to see in detail why and how viri has developed all of these insecurities and why she's so desperate to be recognized and loved and then on top of it we get to see how hugo in turn is that person who sees her and recognizes all that she does for everyone and who loves who she is beneath all of the glamour. like it's so simple and sweet and endearing and when she's telling the girls about how he makes her happy and his jokes are like paracetamol and he loves fish it literally makes me want to cry.. i love it when two people are the only ones to see each other in a room it's so good it's so achey

Much as I would love to see a Muslim/hijabi woman on tv. Most likely wouldn't want to be on tv since it goes against their beliefs. I'm ok with Natacha in this role bc I love her and I appreciate what LS has done with showing respect as the show has continued
Tumblr media
[response to my post here]
First off, thank you for the insight/feedback on the accuracy, and the prayer part in particular! I had thought the location she was praying in was inaccurate but that wasn’t something I saw mentioned a lot at the time of the initial backlash to that scene. So I appreciate the information. 💜
I definitely head canon that when Owen rebuilt the firehouse (for the 2nd time!) he made sure there was a dedicated quiet room. Not only would it be important to have for Marjan or anyone else that works at the firehouse with them of Muslim faith to pray in, but also they have stressful and emotional jobs! Having a dedicated safe space at the firehouse to go when you need that kind of quiet privacy just makes sense to me.
As far as the casting part first: I think Natacha has done a great job and I appreciate the fact that she spoke up to the showrunners after hearing feedback from Muslim viewers. and from what I heard of her talking at the most recent convention, she has some great ideas of exploring various intersectionality that is found within that religion and I think that’s great and really hope they do explore some of those things.
My desire for an actual hijabi woman to have been chosen for this part was mainly based off experiences I witnessed from a previous fandom, Skam. IDK if you ever watched it, but the 4th season focused on a Muslim girl in high school, Sana, played by an actress who was actually Muslim, Iman Meskini, who was fantastic. The show writer/creator/producer relied a lot on her knowledge and lived experience when filming things. Then the Skam remakes happened… and another iteration of the show did not bother to get an actual Muslim to play that character and I remember very vividly the negative experiences a lot of the Muslim people in fandom had based off choices that were made and how that character was portrayed. Iman herself spoke up about how much better it was to have someone with the lived experience, who knew what it was like, acting in a role like that. I love this quote from her too: "I never dreamt about being an actress, because I never saw an actress with hijab on. I didn’t even see it as an option or a possibility at all until I became that example that it is possible."
I definitely can appreciate and understand how nuanced the discussion of actors playing parts that aren’t their own experience truly is though. I think the wars that are waged online about actors who play queer parts especially is a big thing happening in culture right now and I truly understand a lot of varying sides to those kinds of discussions. I know it might not always be possible for own voices actors to play parts like this, but I just feel like the best case scenario in a role like Marjan would have been for it to be played by a hijabi woman. That doesn’t mean I think Natacha is in the wrong for taking the role or that it was a terrible mistake for her to have been cast. Just that there was a better scenario that I had hoped for, that didn’t end up happening. and that's okay.
Now the corn silo story: That interview with Natacha where she said there were things that got cut from that storyline makes me really sad because I wish we could have gotten a better resolution to it. Maybe it would have been exactly what you're mentioning here too - clarifying for the viewers that not everyone in the mosque felt that way and it was just pettiness amongst some of them. Sadly, I guess we'll never know exactly what that would have looked like. It makes me a little sad that the only time we've even seen the mosque she goes to was in that episode in season one. I really really hope we get a chance to see some more storylines for Marjan that can include her faith and her mosque but more of how they're positively impacting her life instead.
(I don't have any relevant Marjan reaction gifs since I mainly use my fave Paul, so have this gif of her being absolutely adorable instead)

XDDDD maybe they did watch wynonna earp, only difference is waves and nicole were both adults and the actors too, so way less uncomfortable to watch once again, i hope we get an interview where they're like "yeah it was our idea to do that" or that they were totally comfortable doing it... but honestly even then, it was still too much in my opinion... and yeah, not only could that conversation have happened like a week ago, but also, this conversation could have been longer. i saw someone comment that Bobbie was finally opening up and they wished the conversation would've been longer. also, someone else said that the vibe was really off, like they wish this would've ended in a warm hug and cuddling, i agree with that too. but that's more of a personal preference, i never liked teary kisses and sex, how do you feel about these things? overall the writing is just so all over the place... i also think it was really good to show anais take the initiative this time because in all the other intimate scenes, it was bobbie who made the first move, so it's good to finally see a back and forth and not just bobbie being the one who seems to want sex all the time and anais just goes along with it (which is what it felt like to me at some points in the season, tho obviously anais was able to refuse in that one clip where she said she was uncomfortable and bobbie immediatly backed off, which i thought was a very good clip btw, dunno how you felt about that one) this is a very long ask, i'm sorry about that, it's just that you have interesting things to say so, :)
I agree to everything you said apart from me having interesting things to say 🤣🤣
No, in seriousness I mentioned before that what excites me more is emotional connection on screen and you know a story that moves me. Especially when it comes to sapphics. We deserve fully rounded and complex stories and not just coming out experiences.
But I'm getting off track, so back to these two. I get the portrayal cus if I think back what I was getting up to at their age, I would say skam is doing well in the portrayal of teenagers discovering themselves. And personally I get annoyed watching a show of highschool kids and the actors are clearly much older and look and dress like adults rather than kids.. so there's that.
And every country has its own regulations on actors ages etc, and each actor will also have their comfort zones etc and the target audience is going to be young adults, right? And I do also think that it's important to also show a same sex relationship for young adults without leaving out intimate parts of the story as we often see. I never had representation like this growing up until the l word came out and it was like 0.0 and again, adults- yes but what I would have given to see myself on screen as a teenager, you know?
These clips aren't for us, fine. But we're still invested in the story because it's so good to see representation and sapphic content. And I know both actors would be fully on board with how they are portraying this story, so it's all good from my point of view.
We deserved more clips of them working it all out and they could have even dragged out the reconciliation, we love angst am I right?

Haakon seems to be going alone? I wonder if Ingrid Alexandra would've gone with him if the wedding had happened at a different time (she's in the middle of all the graduating events), especially since Amalia and Elisabeth would be there too
given the knowledge of Norwegian graduation traditions provided to me by Skam, I feel like the graduation events should be over by now. She hasn’t accompanied her parents to any other royal events so I wonder if maybe they’re waiting for another Scandinavian occasion where she’ll be more comfortable.

LA ELECCIÓN INTERNA 2024
just as last year, the website eurovision-spain.com, the main spanish website for all eurovision related stuff, made la elección interna, an unofficial preselection made for the fans, in which they send in artists they would want to see in eurovision / benidorm fest, they select 100 (they also add some chosen by the eurovision-spain team, just as in the official preselection) and then there's votings until there's a winner. the past two years some of the 12 finalists were in the benidorm fest, and it's highly indicative of what the people want to see that year. for instance, the winners of 2022's elección interna were tanxugueiras (nothing to add there), and of 2023's was maría josé llergo (her sound is very similar to blanca paloma). at first i was gonna do a post talking about my favourites cause i did listen to the 100 songs (i discover a lot of cool artists through it!), but it got way too long and complicated so i decided to settle for the top 12 instead.
i do recommend listening to all songs tho, here is the official youtube playlist and here's the spotify one if you want to give them a go !! anyways, hope you like it :) as always, everything will be under the cut
12. LA MARÍA - MON VETLATORI
Tumblr media
La María is the stage name of María Bertomeu Soria, a Valencian (from Oliva) artist singing in Valencian with sounds representative of Valencian folklore and popular songs.
Mon Vetlatori (My Wake) talks about the burial of a young María who, after going viral with a song, she's buried in critics and insults and she has to grow up too fast.
I really liked this song!! It was one of the last I watched (I watched all through youtube) and I got chills from it, it reminds me of what Blanca Paloma did but with Valencian sounds which <33333
11. BULEGO - SUZKO ERROBERAK:
Tumblr media
Bulego is a basque pop group from Azkoitia made up of Tomas Lizarazu (voice), Itziar Beitia (keyboard), Jon Larrañaga (bass), Rubén Lizarralde (guitar) and Xabier Arrieta (drums). They sing in Euskera and are very known in their natal Euskadi.
Suzko Erroberak (Fireworks) talks about defying what its expected and doing what feels right for you. It's a catchy euskaldun pop song with 70s vibes.
I AM IN LOVE WITH THE MUSIC VIDEO cause it gave me so much SKAM vibes that it made me fantasize about a SKAM Euskadi based in Bilbao with those four as protagonists and yeah... Also the song is fun !!! I love pop so this song was made for me, it's just *chef's kiss*
10. LONTREIRA - CAMPO DA FESTA
Tumblr media
Lontreira is a Galician band from Vigo formed by Rotce (keyboard), Adri Coyote (vocals) and Iván Barral (guitar) singing in Galician mixing traditional elements with electronic music.
Campo da Festa (Party Field) is a fun song that combines fertility rituals with dance themes. I tried understanding the lyrics but I am not that familiar with Galician, so I couldn't get much more sorry.
I love this !!! It reminds me like SHUM but more gentle, and their vibe is so fun and yeah. 10 / 10. Also they have confirmed they've sent a song to Benidorm Fest so they could be participants this year !!!
9. JULIETA - CARI:
Tumblr media
Julieta Gracián is a Catalan pop artist from Barcelona that has a sound that mixes electronic, pop, and urban music, and her greatest inspiration is Angèle, frequently including French sounds in her songs. She is widely known in Catalonia as the next big thing.
Cari (Honey/Sweetie/Love... you get it) is the first chapter of her new album, which will delve on the incidents that happen during one night in Julieta's life. In this song she stumbles in the club into a guy she likes. The song has sounds of house mixed with pop.
I knew Julieta beforehand!! I hadn't listened to her but I had seen people talking about her on Twitter, and now I get the hype!!!! As an Ana Mena superfan, she just hits the same spot, and I can't wait what she could offer to Benidorm Fest!! I'm all for new pop girlies, I collect them like pokemon cards.
8. VALERIA CASTRO - LA RAÍZ:
Tumblr media
Valeria Castro is a Canarian singer-songwriter from La Palma island that is known for her incredible voice and her heartfelt songs, very intimist and calming but also with strong messages. She has also recently been nominated to a Latin Grammy for this song !!!!!!
La Raíz (The Root) talks about going back to your roots when something bad happens. In her case, this song is most likely about the volcanic eruption in her home island of La Palma in 2021, which inspired various songs in her second album.
I am so very normal about Valeria Castro. Um. She's one of my favourite singers of all time, I've seen her live twice and I kinda have a crush on her so. yeah. She has one of the prettiest voices ever and her songs are like a hug and she's the cutest person in this planet and I love her. I would recommend listening to her full discography cause her two albums are just. 10/10 (chiquita and con cariño y con cuidado) but for now here's her (probably) two most popular songs, guerrera and la corriente <3 Anyways. Having her in Benidorm Fest would be a longtime dream for me and it would do her so good, she's a gift to the world and the world needs to know her and experience her because she's... incredible. just. i think i'll shut up now.
7. FILLAS DE CASSANDRA - LISÍSTRATA (VARRE VASOIRA)
Tumblr media
Fillas de Cassandra (Daughters of Cassandra) is a Galician duo made of María Perez and Sara Faro that sends a strong feminist message through traditional sounds and folklore mixed with modern ones and mythological references; their first album, ACROPOLE is structured like a greek play and is full of female figures from Greek mythology.
Lisístrata (Varre Vasoira) (Lysistrata (Sweep the Broom) is a retelling of the story of Lysistrata, a woman that convinced all women in Athens to stop functioning as complient wifes to their husbands until the war stops. It talks about the power of women, and it's a feminist anthem urging women to fight back.
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE ONE THEY SHOULD HAVE WON !!!! Like it's a Galician feminist song based on an Ancient Greek play (Lysistrata) ??? Also all of her songs are based on Classics and even the name of the band like !!! I'm a classicist obsessed with languages you can tell how I feel about this !!! Severely underrated !!!! And I think they sent a song to Benidorm Fest so !!!!!!!!
6. RODRIGO CUEVAS - MÁS ANIMAL
Tumblr media
Rodrigo Cuevas is an Asturian singer singing in Galician and he's been referred to as 'the Freddie Mercury of Asturian folklore'. He lives in an Asturian hamlet of less that 20 people with his boyfriend and a bunch of animals, and he reivindicates folklore as a queer movement. He also is very involved with the reivindication of rural life, of depoblation, and of the Asturian language.
Más Animal (More of an Animal) is a mix between the traditional muñeira and ajechao sounds from northwestern Iberia, and it's a fun song inviting to dance and having fun, liberating oneself.
The man the myth the legend !!! WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE ???? LIKE !!! A QUEER MUÑEIRA / AJECHAO !!! FROM THE FREDDY MERCURY OF ASTURIAN FOLKLORE !!!! Unfortunately he has said he has no intention of participating in Benidorm Fest in the near future but still !!! What an icon honestly
5. ABRAHAM MATEO - LA IDEA
Tumblr media
Abraham Mateo, born in San Fernando (Cádiz) is an icon in Spanish pop culture, due to his early rise to fame when he was 14 with the instant classic Señorita. He's basically the closest thing we have to a Spanish Justin Bieber, receiving similar reactions as him (tho in his case he's actually a pretty cool guy). He's collabed with people like Jennifer López, Becky G or Luis Fonsi, and has a ton of awards.
La Idea (The Idea) is an upbeat urban / electronic song about missing a past love and not being able to forget her, even if it is better that you stay appart.
SPEAKING OF LEGENDS !!! Abraham Mateo is part of Spanish pop culture, and just for that I respect him a lot. He is also pretty cool, very unproblematic, and he seems to be experiencing a reinassance of sorts, which good for him! This song is pretty solid I would say, and I enjoy his collabs with Ana Mena and Chanel as well, I'm happy he's doing good :)
4. TRIQUELL - JUGULAR:
Tumblr media
Triquell is the stage name of Cesc Fuentes Triquell, who raised to fame due to the Catalan singing contest Eufòria, and has since been successful in Catalonia singing electronic / pop songs in Catalan.
Jugular is a fun song about going to a party that's not flashy but honest and a place where you can be yourself, going to this parallel realm.
This song has the same vibes as Cha Cha Cha but in Catalan. To me. No but this song is so fun and I know Triquell would make something equally as good for benidorm fest, and he has expressed his desire to participate so !!!!!
3. COLET - DON FEDERICO:
Tumblr media
Colet, stage name of Anna Colet, from Barcelona, is a singer with a distinct 'retrofuturist' sound and personal lyrics with an ironic tone, although there's some songs (like this one) that have a more social theme.
Don Federico talks about domestic violence, denouncing it in a crude and powerful way to an electronic hype tune.
THIS SONG IS SO INCREDIBLE!!! It reminds me a lot to Rigoberta Bandini's songs. Also, the title alludes to the kids' song Don Federico, one of those songs kids play to that starts with 'Don Federico killed his wife, he cut her into pieces and made a stew out of her'. Yeah, we sung that as kids. Idk. It gets better tho I loved that song and game when I was little. Anyways. I think Colet could do wonders in Benidorm Fest, AND just like Triquell she has sent a song so !!!!!!! I am very excited to see if she ends up being selected, she could easily be my favourite.
2. MARÍA PELÁE - EL GRILLO:
Tumblr media
María Peláe, born in Málaga, is a very well known flamenco artist that fuses the traditional sounds with a modern twist and a lot of ironic and frankly funny lyrics. For me she's like. the closest thing we have to younger / more modern folclóricas, which are/were a bunch of female flamenco singers that have a certain attitude and air to them that made them instant icons in Spanish pop culture. Recently she was a participant in a famous music program in national TV.
El Grillo (The Cricket) is a very fun song about this one girl who is completely different from María and comes off as pretentious, but who she honestly doesn't care about (she hears crickets when this other girl talks).
I LOVE HER YOUR HONOUR!! Anyways yeah, I think she's a modern folclórica and she especially reminds me of Lola Flores (the greatest folclórica ever!!!!) I cannot recommend her enough, she's incredible and this song is a BOP, I would love her to go to benidorm fest oh my god she would do wonders. Anyways, if you want to hear more of her stuff I would recommend Por si te vas and La Niña (this song talks about a lesbian bar and girl queerness btw and it's soooo fun, it's her best song imo). While writing this I listened to her recent collab with Melody and it's also a bop, actually.
LA LA LOVE YOU FT. SAMURAÏ - EL PRINCIPIO DE ALGO
Tumblr media
La La Love You is an indie pop punk band from Parla (Madrid) composed by Roberto Amor (vocals, guitar), David Merino (vocals, guitar), Lydia Carré (bass), and Oscar Hoyos (drums). They are giants in the indie world, and very well deserved !!! I would characterize their sound as coming of age teen movie soundtrack, they're amazing.
El Principio de Algo (The Start of Something) talks about that feeling of getting to know someone new and falling in love with them and realizing it and !!!!!!!
THIS SONG. Um. I am pretty sure it's like... on my top 10 most listened to songs this year. lmao. So yeah. I have many thoughts about it and I'm maybe a bit obsessed with it. Anyways. La La Love You are one of my favourite groups rn, they're incredible, i've seen them live and are so much fun (you haven't lived until experiencing el fin del mundo live imo). Also all of their songs have the same vibe as this one which i LOVE. I would really reccomend listening to El fin del mundo (HYPEST SONG EVER) and La canción del verano, they're SOOO !!!. Also I know this entry is for La La Love You only but Samuraï is my favourite artist I've discovered from this year and she's so freaking good it's insane. I really really recommend her stuff, like TIRANDO BALAS and Mechero for example.
Them winning this year's Elección Interna is insane actually cause it came out of nowhere and they're some of the artists I listen to the most and ?????? Also we've never sent something similar to La La Love You to Eurovision so I have no idea how we would do but it would be fun honestly. They would have my vote in benidorm fest that's for sure.

What Did I Watch: #31
This week, I learn to say goodbye.
Tumblr media
What is it with goodbye? If feels scary but necessary. Goodbye gives us closure. An end to a journey. In life alone, there's no perfect goodbye, but in fictional world a perfect goodby could exist.
To me, a great ending is not necessarily wanting me to wish for a direct sequel. A great ending is supposed to be tighten the loose ends. Also gives room for our imagination to explore what could happen after the camera stopped rolling. Moreover, a great ending is the one that left you wanting more but not selfishly enough to make you craving more because we all know deep down a sequel never guaranteed to replicate the exact quality of its predecessor.
My School President is a wonderful journey through and through. 10/10. Landed smoothly without having too much angst or humor. It's already up there with Skam. Perhaps on some other day, it'll be higher than Skam. What a pleasantly beautiful little show about what it means to be young, and having the courage to dream.
I didn't have any of those things which presented during my high school run. A friendship that last for so long or even a significant other who made my life bearable enough. My high school years was boring and literally nothing happened. I don't really any friend that I still contact from that period of time. So to me, at first the concept of My School President was already laughable. But well if it wasn't happen to me, it certainly happened to everyone else, eh?
In addition, I could confirm My School President landed smoothly. Got a beautiful ending. The song still slapped. There's no better word to describe it other than it was charming. This show was charming. Even I couldn't stop grinning ear to ear writing this.
The scene that broke me. Ah young love.
Tumblr media
Never Let Me Go, to me felt like not exactly wasted potential but definitely not something I would praised until seven generations. It was good but never been great. I would love to recommending it but not necessarily you have to watch it.
Because there were many what-ifs scenario forming in my brain while I was watching it. For example, what could've happen if it was starring someone else entirely? How the scene would sound like if they had better sound designer? What if the screenwriters decided to rewrite the whole thing so that the characters could talk like they were in real life instead of lakorn?
Because I couldn't help but to raised my eyebrows during certain scenes. It wasn't technically bad acting. It was an okay but the way Neung convey his feelings sometimes I felt like I was watching a play. It did feel like the whole time Phuwin just pretending to say those words, instead of actually saying those words. Plus sometimes the sentences that coming out from his mouth just didn't make any sense. It was clearly intentional because it kept going until the screen fade to black. I know P'Jo was trying to make a homage to classic lakorns, so perhaps Thais would appreciate a lot more. But I'm not Thai, and I just went "no shit sherlock" the entire time.
Despite all of that though, it was beautifully shot. Honestly this show got the best cinematography ever. Without having too much contrast, P'Jo played a lot with lights and compositions. Colors looked so deep yet soft at same time. There was a sense of longing and yearning radiated from the screen. It was magic to see something that I learned from being an amateur cinephile to get materialize.
Lights on this. And the color. I love the colors. It wasn't trying to be gritty as fuck like Batman movies. It wasn't on the same tone with In The Mood For Love but the use of color and lights and framing to convey devotion are just utter brilliance.
youtube
It was a struggle to watch Moonlight Chicken. Like I said in previous post, it seemed I take a peek on my own life. Eventually, I'll probably never get the happy ending I deserve so much, not like these fictional characters.
10 minutes into episode 5, was solidify my thoughts and prayers on this. I got called out, dragged, faced to one of bitter memories I've had on a past relationship. Because yes, one day people just decided not even bother trying to save their relationship. It already happened to me once, and no I don't want to relive that, even in fictional zone. Therefore, as I was watching episode 5, I undergo so many different feelings. If week 2 felt like a gut punch, week 3 seemed one hell of torture, and week 4 was an utopia that I've never get to lived on.
youtube
This ain't it.
Because Wen got his happy ending. Liming got his happy ending. Me? Well, it wasn't like I don't want to open up to other people. There was no other people trying to get close to me.
I liken this to my experience watching Brokeback Mountain. It was a good storytelling, but do I want to experience it all over again? No. Because it was just too close to home. And I still don't know what kind of my ending is. It was scary. Shit got real this time. I think I'm never going be the same. I tried to shift my focus into something else, e.g. Formula 1, it gets worse. Possibly because Ferrari looked and sounded shit. Everything just didn't help anymore.
Tumblr media
me during the whole shitty shit bahrain gp free practice, watching aston martin became way too more OP, and red bull still being red bull. me as tifosi:

It feels like the yr twitter has been dying for some time already, and it'll happen on tumblr too. Maybe some will stay, a bit like Skam fans who still pop up here and there. I just hope I'll find some new series to get excited about.
It is bound to happen. But I'm sure alot of fans will find new things to be excited about and new fandoms to interact with. It can feel sad I guess but I'm so used to it by now I'm more curious to see if I find something else to be as invested in.
