she — hange zoe
— hange zoe x female reader (modern au)
— warnings: angst ??? the stinging feeling you get when you see someone you love, love someone else
— summary: hange's best friend found love in the form of autumn while hange associates her with all of the seasons.
— word count: 2.5k
— notes: i love hange but i hate myself for writing something that hurts them :<<< they're my first love in aot and it pains me to imagine them hurting in any sort of way (which is probably the reason why i bawled my heart out in chap 132). this little fic hit too close at home for me bc it's exactly what i felt one time during high school. it's fucking traumatizing and istg, i don't want to relive falling in love with a friend again, it's like the most satisfying way to hurt, too. happy reading tho :<<<

She embodies everything positive in Hange’s eyes.
She is spring — the bursting of blossoms under the tendrils of sunlight seeping between the spaces of the trees in the woods. Every time Hange closes their eyes, they are reminded of how she signifies every single flower they ever know. She makes them feel everything at once — see every color at once in a single frame. There is no space for artistic abilities in Hange’s calloused, mismatched hands but when it comes to her, they can create a myriad of paintings encapsulating her beauty at every stroke of a brush. Her laughs, her flowery perfume that doesn’t hurt their nose, her smiles that are as radiant as the early morning Sun — are ingrained in their brain. She brings forth the butterflies that Hange carefully imprisoned in their ribs, the monarchs’ wings already seeping through the cracks at every joke she makes, reaching to their heart until every beat swayed to the sound of her giggles.
“Hange, the love of my life, there you are!”
Hange turned around with a huge smile on their lips. Their conversation with Levi came to an abrupt stop, with the shorter man mumbling along the lines of ‘here we go again’. The small smile on his face spoke otherwise while watching two of his closest friends hug each other as if they didn’t live together in an apartment right outside of campus. It was such a mystery that Hange could be so comfortable around someone to the point of playfully kissing their neck in public, followed by their best friend’s melodious laughs soon after. However, Levi couldn’t be fooled. He knew the glint in the brown-haired person’s eyes. The downturn of their eyebrows when their best friend wasn’t looking. The longing was apparent when she was talking to someone across the room.
The idiot going by the name Hange Zoe was irrevocably in love with their best friend, [Name] [Last Name].
“What is it, baby?” Hange asked vibrantly, glasses reflecting the equally excited girl in their arms. “Didn’t know your class dismissed this early. What happened?”
“Nothing. Our professor announced that we should visit a museum for our finals.” She then mimicked the haughty tone of her Art History professor, straightening her back to make herself appear taller. “Choose a painting or a sculpture and trace down its history and attach your critique in the final output. If I see anyone half-assing this paper, I will not hesitate to give a failing grade that will make you retake this class. I know you lot don’t want to see me again for another semester and I don’t want to see you again, too. So, prove to me you’re worth your standing in this course.” She cleared her throat. “What he said.”
Hange whistled. “Dang, I’m happy that I didn’t follow you to the Arts Department. Your professor sounds like a complete asshole.” They chortled the next second. “Sounds like my mom, to be honest.”
“At least your mom makes a bomb bento box.”
“Yeah, I guess, you’re right.” Hange then nuzzled their face in her hair. “But your bento boxes taste much more delicious — I could eat them all day. Can I be your partner so that you’ll cook for me every day?”
“I’ve already taken the position of your wife the moment I agreed to be your roommate in university, sweetheart. And I cook for you every single day so you don’t have to ask to be my partner because you already are.”
Hange looked smug at her reply, the heat in their cheeks traveling to their ears. “That was a rhetorical question but hearing those words come out of your mouth, it’s making me feel things.”
“Oh? What are those things?”
The brown-haired person snickered under their breath, glancing at Levi who was now looking at the two of them in that lazy way of his that might come off as him being annoyed again. In reality, he was only waiting for the two to finally stop flirting to recognize he was there. His daily job of being a third-wheel should’ve started fifteen minutes ago but Hange wouldn’t let [Name] go. Hange turned back to the expectant girl. “I don’t want Levi to hear what I’m about to say. Just expect something back at the apartment,” they joked, a cheeky smile tugging at their lips.
[Name] laughed heartily. “I’m looking forward to that, gorgeous.”
“I’m still here, you know?” Levi dryly made himself known. He huffed and turned around in the direction of the university restaurant. “Come on, lovebirds, let’s have lunch. Oh, and [Name]?” When he heard her little hum of acknowledgment, Levi slightly turned around to meet his friend’s eyes with his jaded ones. “It’s your turn to buy me a drink. Make it a venti today.” She only blinked at him, giving him no choice but to resort to that dumb thing she always asked. “Please can I have a venti this time? I got you and Hange a venti last time so this makes us even.”
“Ooh, make mine a venti, too, baby!” Hange squeezed their best friend’s waist.
“Anything for my sweetheart.”
“Again, I’m right here, you know.”
Just the thought of that little scenario hurts Hange.
But as much as the pain comes in the package, she is still summer in their eyes.
The Sun can’t compare to the brilliance of her smile. Kind smiles and gentle touches under the warm rays of the summer heat. Her scent is yellow to Hange — so bright and warm that they don’t care how long they bask in her presence, never caring if they get burned because it feels so right to be within her orbit. She urges them to feel so loved and so special, tender caresses of her warmth cascading down every vein until it reaches their heart. The cerulean waters of the sea hold nothing against the beauty of her grins, brown eyes searching for her every time of the day no matter how ethereal the world painted itself to be. Viewing the sights with rose-colored glasses is what they may call it but for Hange, it’s simply her. Someone once said that summer brings forth a paradise where blue covers everything in its wake, the cry of the seagulls reverberating in the distance, and the scent of ice cream flickers in the breeze. For Hange, summer is in the form of pretty close-lipped smiles, of late-night movie marathons on a worn-out couch, of bento boxes filled with their favorites, of a scent so saccharine, and a loyal friend.
A friend.
Of course. No matter where Hange goes, that word haunts them. Hidden beneath their smiles, their jokes, their longing, and admiring stares. It’s a reminder of where they stand in this limbo they created. At one point, they thought that line had been crossed only for it to be established again in permanent ink. And before they know it, Hange is tumbling down in a spiral, along with a change of seasons.
Fall is where everything started.
The orange glow of the leaves created the perfect view as she sipped on her tall cup of warm coffee. The blissful sigh that came soon after warmed up Hange, even though they were seated in front of each other in the outside tables of the small cozy café where Levi was working at. The chill brought by the autumn wind caused both of them to shiver in their layered clothing. The way she nuzzled more into her scarf made Hange coo, reaching out to pinch her cheek affectionately. Autumn was both their favorite season, how it made them resort to the comfort and warmth their sweaters bring, or how they cuddle in each other’s beds with the air conditioner blasting despite the cold. It was also a season where Hange could admire her in their hoodie, a piece of clothing that swallows her whole because she’s so small compared to their lanky figure.
Hange remembered being called out here because she wanted to talk about something. Now that they thought about it, her cheeks appear to be glowing more than usual and she kept glancing inside the café where Levi was busy telling his coworker how to make the new drink. Hange even went as far as following her gaze but they didn’t find anything out of the ordinary other than Levi sighing in that stressful way of his that always made them snicker. They turned back to their Sun, who was once again in a daze while staring at the clear windows of the café. “So,” they prolonged the syllable, “how’s life going, darling? I know we’re living in the same apartment but I just can’t help but ask you this because it seems like you’re always in a daze these days.”
A pause made the breeze’s call known.
“Hey, Hange, have you ever been in love?”
That spread the chill even more inside Hange’s chest. She called them by their name. Not sweetheart nor big spoon. The reality washed over Hange like a pail of freezing water.
“W-What?” Damn, they couldn’t keep the stutter off their words.
She turned her head to them, eyes so soft and smile so beautiful that made Hange breathless for one second. The butterflies dwindled, losing their iridescent wings when they realized that look wasn’t reserved for them anymore. “I thought about it,” she murmured, rubbing her numbing fingertips on the warm cup. “I have never fallen in love with anyone before. Sure, I love you and all our friends but I’ve never stopped and thought about how someone can look like starlight in front of me. But recently,” again, that pretty smile that pierced Hange’s chest, “I never knew that it could hit me that unexpectedly.”
Hange grinned despite the pounding of her chest. “So, who’s the lucky person?”
She chuckled, going back to staring at the interior of the café. “I told Levi to lay off on scolding her but he never listens, says she’ll never grow a backbone if he’s being considerate on her.”
Now, they’re confused because the only people manning the counter as she spoke was Levi (and she would never fall in love with Levi, seeing as they grew up together like siblings rather than the childhood friends that they are) and a strawberry blonde who looked like Levi’s become their worst nightmare. It took Hange a full minute to process that the person she’s been staring at was never their mutual friend, but the strawberry blonde who looked up towards their direction and waved with a pretty blush on their cheeks. She waved back with the same shyness, leaving Hange dumbfounded. “Wait, the person you’re in love with is—”
“Yeah, it’s her.”
Suddenly, Hange understands why she’s starting to like autumn.
It reminds her of the girl’s hair, which she gushes about smelling like coconut. It reminds her of the girl’s preferred perfume, how it smells so much like cinnamon, something that she sometimes puts in her autumn drinks because in her words, ‘it’s the perfect season rather than winter’. It reminds her of the girl’s hugs, the way both of them fit with each other like lost puzzle pieces.
But as the seasons change, feelings of long-term pining will always be constant.
“Are you okay, though?” Erwin asked them, blue eyes reflecting their pathetic faux smile. He pushed the plate of pasta to them since Erwin had an idea that Hange wasn’t eating that much now. It also worried [Name].
“Yeah, four-eyes, I know you’re not doing that great and I’m saying this in the friendliest way possible because we’re worried now,” Levi reminded them, sipping on his tea with slightly narrowed eyes. “You always decline whenever we want to bring you to somewhere, to the point of leaving Nanaba on voicemail. You always answer at the first ring. Look here, shitty four-eyes,” the way Levi enunciated the nickname made Hange slowly turn their head to him, face void of the smile they were known for, “shouldn’t you be happy for her? [Name] gained the courage to confess and you’re here moping when you should’ve been supportive—”
“And what of my feelings, Levi?”
That made Levi blink and feel like an asshole.
Then, the dam broke.
“I’ve been with her all this time, you’ve seen that. You witnessed how this shy girl opened up to an extroverted idiot and became one of her best friends during high school. It feels like I can’t fucking breathe because I always thought we were meant to be. When she was lonely, I was there to comfort her. When she got a bad grade on an exam, I was the one who knows what flavors of ice cream she wants or how she eats them together like a fucking milkshake. Every day, I never expected her to look my way like she looks at her girlfriend right now. It fucking hurts. It feels so empty to know that I’m not the one she fell in love with. What did I lack? Should I be sweeter and gentler like that girl? Or dainty whenever I eat like she is? Be girly and dress up like a doll? Fuck, I can’t even bring myself to hate her girlfriend. She’s so nice and kind and sweet, anything I’m not.” Hange buried their hands in their hair, making it messier than it was.
“I just want [Name] to love me and make things wonderful. Why isn’t Fate on my side this time?
“Why didn’t she choose me?”
Tears were now drifting down like snowflakes.
“Hange,” Erwin murmured.
“Look, sunshine, it’s snowing!”
A voice catches their attention. A strawberry blonde cheers the words with glee painted in her eyes. Beside her is the subject of the trio’s conversation, the subject of a brown-haired person’s affections. Her eyes are taking in the beauty that is her girlfriend. She looks so pretty in love — how her eyes crinkled at the corners and how snow clung on her eyelashes as if she is a fairy straight from a fairy tale Hange loves when she was a kid. Her girlfriend takes her hand and pulls her to the restaurant where the trio is watching from the windows. Gray and blue irises slide over a somber bespectacled person, gauging their reaction though their face never gives anything away.
“I’m right behind you, Petra. I just took the time to admire you because you’re so pretty under the snow.”
“Stop it! You’re prettier!”
“Did you know that seeing the first snow of the year together with the person you love, your relationship will rival that of eternity?”
“Then, I’m happy I get to see this first snow with you, sunshine.”
“Me, too, angel.”
Hange smiles under a steady stream of tears. “I’m happy for her. I’m happy she found happiness even if it’s not with me.”
The chill blows inside the warm walls of the restaurant the moment the door opens, [Name]’s joyous greetings for her best friends bringing smiles to two of them. Her eyes drift to brown ones before turning to Petra to ask for a pack of tissues since Hange’s tears are still visible. Hange watches the commotion with a small smile, the chill spreading through them like a snowstorm.
Winter is here.

summary: Chris Redfield and his wife were on a mission a seven months after Piers’ death. His wife has been Captain of their team ever since that day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seven months ago Piers Nivans died in order to save Chris’ life and for the BSAA. Chris was still fucked up after that day and he thinks about it almost every day. He took a break from the BSAA since his wife made him. It wasn’t a very long one though, he missed being at work, he missed his coworkers and he missed her
Chris resigned as Captain and let his wife replace him. It was a very emotional day not not only for her and Chris but for the entire BSAA because they’ve never had a woman as Captain before. She was a good captain probably even better than Chris. Despite her height, weight and basically being the youngest on that team at 28. She was undoubtedly the best captain in years
Her team along with Chris were on a mission. Their mission was to take out the enemy, find three hostages and disable the bombs set in the building “Okay men… we’re gonna be splitting into three teams since there’s a lot of us here. Team A; Corey, John and Andrew. Your job is to find out where the bombs are and disable them as quickly as possible.”
“Yes ma’am!” The three went off to do their job as told
“Team B; Phil, Jean and Mark, you’re in charge of finding and getting the hostages to safety out of this building. You three can split up, stay together I don’t care. As long as your job is done”
“Ma’am” the three left
She turned to Eric and Chris who were standing together “what a coincidence, you two are with me.” She said with a slight smile on her face, walking ahead of the two Eric leaned over to Chris “She’s so cool…” Chris thought of Finn the moment he said that, he couldn’t help but to smile and look at him “I know…”
“Stop standing around we have a mission you know!” She yelled out to the two of them. Chris and Eric quickly made their way to the door the enemies were behind, Chris was silent the entire time before he was quickly checked back into reality with a pat on the shoulder “you okay? We need you fully here for this” his wife said as he looked down at her and nodded “yeah I’m okay…”
Chris, his wife and Eric all prepared as the door was blown open and guns were firing. The three did take cover just in time. After about five minutes of gun fire and fighting it finally stopped, thinking they had all the enemies taken care of they all stood up “good job! We did it — Chris!” Y/N called out as she did catch a glimpse of an enemy that didn’t die somehow standing up and pointing their gun towards Chris.
She quickly ran towards Chris and pushed him out the way, for Chris it’s almost like everything was happening in slow motion. He had to process everything leading up to that moment. He heard a scream of pain when his head finally cleared, looking up to see his wife shot in the sternum and Eric shooting the enemy down
She started to fall and Chris caught her before she hit the floor, his eyes started filling up with tears as he looked at her “baby please… tell me this is a joke!”
She knew she was dying, her body felt so cold from the inside out she, she coughed before reaching into one of her many pokes on her pants “c…Chris… do me a favour okay? Please…. stay safe” she handed him her wedding ring, she never wore it during missions to avoid it getting broken, rusted or something. So she held it in her pocket where it was safe “I… feel so… cold”
Chris looked at the ring then at her “no don’t say that! You’re gonna be fine! You’re gonna be fine! Please stay with me!” He started crying, Eric stood by as Team B; Phil, Jean and Mark came in. They surprisingly finished the bomb quicker than expected “Captain w—“ Mark was starting to talk but he quickly stopped when he realised what was happening
“Guys… take care of him for me…” she struggled to talk. She looked up at Chris to see him crying, she lifted her Hand up to his cheek to wipe his tears one last time “no no… don’t cry hon… I’ll tell my parents you said hi… I love you..” Chris held onto her hand and his heart practically stopped the moment he felt her hand and body go heavy and her head fall back … she was dead now
“No…. Please come back! Please don’t go! Y/N!!!” He held her body close and just sobbed, Eric and team B were tearing up and trying to wipe their tears
It took a while to get Chris to let go of her body and let them put her on a stretcher and on the truck so they can go back. When they finally did everyone on the team was there. It took three guys to pry him off of her This was the first time they’ve ever seen him cry like this
—————————
It’s been almost a month since she’s died, Chris looked horrible. He hasn’t shaved, left the house, he started drinking again and Claire had to clean him up at night since he wasn’t sober enough to even do it himself. The house looked like shit especially the room Chris and his wife shared
It was the day of the funeral and Chris was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at the picture of him and her on their wedding day back in 2007. He somehow managed to even get up that day and not drink. He showered that morning, got dressed in a suit and did his hair. He still didn’t shave though
Claire came in “Chris? You ready?” She asked. She had on a black dress on “I guess so…” Chris responded. He stood up and placed the picture down on the night stand and grabbed the necklace he had with his wife’s ring on it.
Claire fixed his tie and jacket before they left. Chris was always taking care of her when she was younger so now it was time for her to take care of her older brother “good. Let’s go” Claire let him walk in front of her to the car. She drove because one he couldn’t think straight enough to drive and he was completely hung over from drinking too much
After about a 45 minute drive they arrived to where her funeral was being held at. Everyone they knew was there, Leon, their BSAA team, Her family. It was hard for him to see her brother and sister at their older sisters funeral
The ceremony, the viewing and speeches all happened and Chris barely even got through his speech without crying
(Im so so so sorry for this next part)
Chris’ speech: “Y/N was an amazing person, she always took care of everyone, me, her siblings, our team, Claire… everyone. She put everyone before herself no matter who they were. She joined the BSAA not because of herself because of her parents death in Raccoon City. She promised them she would do something in any way to stop what happened in Raccoon from ever happening again. She treated our team like her family and even the rookies as her kids even if they were a few years younger then her. She was an even amazing person and wife. And I miss her dearly.”
There wasn’t a single dry eye in that room when Chris said his speech. After everything, everyone went inside to eat and talk.
Chris sat with Claire and Y/N’s siblings. He just picked at his food and stared at the plate. He was terrifyingly silent before Leon came over “hey Chris… how are you holding up?” Leon asked as he stared at Chris. He could tell how hard this has affected Chris. “I’m fine…”
“Chris… You need to eat. All you’ve done in the past month was drink, workout and cry… You need to at least eat something” Claire said “she wouldn’t want this… Her or Piers wouldn’t want you to be like this. Y/N would be yelling at you if she saw you picking at your food like this. We both know she would”
Chris’ eyes started to water once again before he spoke “I…. I know.. but I just miss her so much, Claire… we were gonna start a family together… she wanted to have kids and get a bigger house so we can have a big family… now I can’t have one because she’s the only person I wanted a family with…” Chris sighed softly as he wiped his eyes
“I miss her too… we all do…” Leon commented looking down at his plate. Chris eventually ended up eating his food and everyone left to go home. The entire drive home was deafening to the point you can hear a pin drop
When he got home he changed inside a fresh pair of clothes and he started to clean the house, starting with the bedroom and ending in the Kitchen. He cleaned it exactly how she’d like it and when he was finished around 3:32 am he sat on the couch and sighed
They were right… She would yell at him if she saw the way he was, how the house was when she died
—————————
After a few years pass it’s before the entire Village situation. Every week since the funeral Chris visited her grave and just talked to her for a bit. On her birthday he spent almost half the day there, on new year’s he watched the fireworks by your gave.
He still hasn’t moved on since her death he can’t even get into another relationship with a woman since her death but it’s not like he can find anyone else like her… and honestly he didn’t want to.

You always told yourself that you would never be one of those 9-5 office workers that sat in a cubicle all day long. You wanted to travel and see the world. Little did you know, that to travel the world, you needed to be seated in that cubicle. For four years, you have been working in the same cubicle with the same 12 co-workers, one of whom stood out to you more than the rest.
Lee Hyunjae was quite the character. With such an upbeat personality, he was the life of the office. Hyunjae was the first person you met when you started working at the office. He liked to be the center of attention. Not that you minded. Hyunjae made you feel so welcome when you first started to work here. He talked you through everything, would partner up with you for certain jobs, and even take you out for lunch or dinner, depending on how late the day became. You two built up quite the friendship, and along the way you developed feelings.
According to your other coworkers, Hyunjae felt the same way. You never believed them, however, the now constant flirting and small sexual innuendos that had made their way into your daily conversations with Hyunjae made you question whether he did feel the same way or not. Hyunjae was naturally a flirt, but he only just started to flirt with you. Maybe he was interested.
“Hello,” Juyeon, your coworker, said as he waved his hand in front of your face. “Are you even listening to me?”
You shook your head, snapping back into reality as you looked at the dark-haired boy. “I’m sorry, Juyeon. Did you say something?”
Juyeon huffed before following where your gaze was currently focused. He looked back at you and smirked. You raised an eyebrow at him before speaking.
“What?” You asked him.
He chuckled. “You know what? You were checking out Hyunjae.”
You rolled your eyes. “No I wasn’t.”
Juyeon scoffed. “Yeah sure.”
You turned back around in your chair so your back was to him before hearing someone speak.
“You know,” You heard a soft voice exclaim. “ You could just tell Hyunjae you like him. Rather than ogle him like a horny schoolgirl.”
Your eyes widened as you looked up at the top of your cubicle and made eye contact with Jacob. Jacob was a more soft-spoken worker. He wasn’t overly loud or insanely crazy, though he did have some spurts of wild in him every now and then.
“Will you shut the hell up!” You stated, making both Juyeon and Jacob laugh.
You went to focus back on your computer before hearing Juyeon speak.
“You know he feels the same way,” He started.
“Bullshit.” You countered, keeping your eyes on your computer screen.
Juyeon eyed you for a moment before giving a look to Jacob who disappeared back behind the walls of your cubicle. You worked diligently and quietly, unbothered by Sunwoo and Eric’s daily shenanigans before feeling a tap on your shoulder.
“I’m hungry. You want to go get some lunch with me?” Hyunjae asked.
You exited out of the spreadsheet you were working on as you turned around in your chair, a smile growing on your face when you made eye contact with Hyunjae.
“Yeah,” You stood you, grabbing your coat. “Let’s go.”
Hyunjae smiled at you as he waited for you to gather your things. You threw a goodbye to Juyeon and Jacob as you walked out the door, not being able to miss the snide ‘be safe’ that came from Juyeon which you knew for a fact had a double meaning.
You and Hyunjae decided on a little café just a couple of blocks from the office as you both got comfortable and ordered.
“So, how's the workload today?” Hyunjae asked.
You looked at him with a raised brow as you smirked. “You took me out to lunch to talk about work?”
Hyunjae chuckled, smiling. “Okay you caught me. How was your date last week? I’ve been meaning to ask.”
You nodded with a tight smile. “It was good.”
He snorted. “And by good, you mean terrible?”
You let out a laugh, making Hyunjae grin. “You can read me so well. He was insanely self absorbed. All he did was talk about himself. I’m never letting Changmin set me up with one of his college buddies again.”
Hyunjae took a sip of his drink as he nodded. “Changmin isn’t too fond of that guy anyway.”
You almost choked on your coffee. “Thanks for telling me that now.”
Hyunjae laughed. “You could always avoid getting set up on blind dates if you just find the right guy.”
“And is that your way of saying it should be you?” You looked up at him over the lid of your coffee cup, catching his strong gaze.
“Maybe it is.” Hyunjae said.
Your breath hitched in your throat at his tone. It was a questionable one as you couldn’t tell whether he was being a tease or being serious. Part of you hoped he was serious. You both ate and drank your coffees in silence before throwing away your trash. You wrapped yourself back in your coat before feeling Hyunjae grip your hand.
“Come on you. You’re taking too long.” He said with a teasing smile as he pulled on your hand.
Without realizing it, you two had managed to make it back inside the office hand in hand as Hyunjae walked you to your cubicle. You both were laughing at something Hyunjae had said about Sunwoo as you say in your chair. Hyunjae peeled off his jacket as he made his way over to his cubicle.
You logged into your computer before hearing someone clear their throat. You looked up and met the warm eyes of Jacob as he smiled.
“Someone had fun at lunch.” Jacob said with a grin.
You looked at him. “And what are you implying?”
He shrugged as he held his head up over the cubicle wall to look down at you.
“Something obviously happened.” You heard Juyeon counter behind you.
“Says who?” You said without turning around.
“Says the hand holding when you two walked through the door.” Jacob said before falling back into his seat when he saw your boss come out of his office.
You kept yourself busy as he walked around each cubicle, looking over the work. He studied Hyunjae for longer than usual as he tapped his shoulder before heading back to his office. You heard Hyunjae sigh as you watched him make his way to your boss’ office. The office stayed quiet, trying to listen in on the conversation before the door swung open. It was closed gently as you all watched Hyunjae stand outside the door. He took a deep breath before loosening his tie and heading for the break room.
You turned yourself around, trying hard to concentrate on the spreadsheets on your screen before giving into the nagging temptation to go check on him. Scooting back your chair, you quickly made your way to the break room. As you approached, you saw through the blinds, Hyunjae with his head in his hands.
You knocked on the door, closing it behind you as you entered. “Are you okay, Jae?”
Hyunjae lifted his head to look at you and smiled. “My consumer report came back. It’s not looking too good.”
You frowned, sitting down next to him. “That can’t be right. You’re our best salesman.”
He shook his head. “I guess I’ve been a little distracted this quarter.”
It was your turn to laugh as you watched him stand up and grab yet another cup of coffee. You watched him add an unreasonable amount of sugar that was likely to put him on the ground as he mixed it. He stared at the sugar coffee as you stood up, reaching for the glass.
“Okay, first. Don’t drink this,” You told him, pulling the glass away from him. “Second of all, what could possibly have you so distracted that you went from top of the sales to bottom of the sales faster than Jacob goes through the cereal?”
Hyunjae smiled before looking back at you. It was another look you weren’t used to, it was almost an admirable look.
“You,” He whispered quietly, hoping you wouldn’t hear him.
You cocked your head. “What?”
He repeated it, louder this time. “You. You’re distracting me.”
You felt yourself get slightly offended. “What do you mean I’m distracting you?”
Hyunjae could tell by your tone that you didn’t understand what he was saying as he decided to take matters into his own hands. He grabbed your hand, pulling you into him as he kissed you. You kept your arms on his chest, putting tension on your palms, almost as if you were trying to push him off before bringing them up to wrap around his neck. Hyunjae pulled away first, leaning his forehead on yours as he spoke through heavy breathing.
“You know, I would be good for you. I know so much about you. Too much if I may add,” You hit his chest as he continued with a laugh. “But I know for damn sure, I can treat you a hell of a lot better than anyone that those idiots out there try to set you up with.”
You grinned at him. “Could you now?”
He nodded as he leaned by your ear, nibbling on the lobe before whispering. “And I am confident that I could touch you better as well.”
You bit your lip to stifle your laughter as Hyunjae tightened his grip on you.
“Well then, I guess we’ll need to test that before I think about giving you a chance on a first date.” You said, feeling yourself being moved forward as you heard the break room door lock.
You giggled as Hyunjae closed the blinds. “Just try and keep the noise level down.”
You kissed him again as he lifted you on top of the small table. “Whatever, Hyunjae!”
Juyeon and Jacob would not let you live this down.

>//:INTERMISSION: HOT SPRINGS
>//:BEFORE THE WARNING. BEFORE WHAT IS TO COME:: -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
The trio after securing their ride over the digital ocean come to see the city ahead of them coming closer. It was massive, buildings intricate in their design and nature crowded together. Their structures rose high in the sky reaching the clouds and all the three could do was stare in awe, but not don...he knew this place fair well. The airship they were on blared a jingle in a robotic tone for all of them to hear. “We’re arriving at PRIMARY CITY airship drop off, thank you for riding and enjoy your stay.”
“Thank Yggdrasil..” Donovan said aloud, the two looked at him. Chester opening his mouth to ask “Why are you thanking Yggdrasil about?” Donovan then looked back to him then to Werner “Because since we’re here, first things first...We’re going to the hotsprings.” The other two digimon stared before in unision “What???
Chester saw that the other two were already settled in the water though he himself stood there nervous. "I thought you said you didn’t want to share a bath?” Chester questioned to Donovan. Donovan scoffed “Well Werner is already here and you’re going to come in anyways so...whatever.” he huffed. Chester still stood there and Werner spoke up “Comeon ches it’s going to get cold out there with you being naked and all! don’t worry the water won’t burn you” he said with a smile. Chester turned red “F-Fine okay I’m...getting in.” he then slowly walked over and eased himself into the water. Donovan and Werner just sort of watching as he did so “see! told you Ches” The wizardmon wanted to sink into the water and nearly did “y-yeah..” ---
Don is finally starting to relax after a while, seeing Werner and Chester interact, when he blinks, eyes set on Chester "wait a minute... i've seen this before"
The wizardmon had his upper body turned to Werner, and looks back to Donovan puzzled.
“You’ve what”
“I knew this rang a bell when Werner first pointed out” Don says pointing to Chester’s neck “your tattoo. It’s one of those ancient crests”
Chester’s eyes go wide, but he doesn’t say anything. Don continues:
"I thought they weren't used anymore..." he goes silent and then looks to Chester.“What” replied the wizardmon, in a defensive tone. Don lifts a finger to his chin: "So did you buy it on the black market, or did your dumb luck found the old code"
The water starts to boil near Chester "No, I didn’t buy it! Where would I even get the bits?!" he punched Donovan in the arm. Though after that the bubbling stops then he sinks into the water further "I didn't know shit about it alright?" With a sigh he continues "Some old decaying cave was a bad place for an egg to hatch and I couldn't just leave it there."
Werner’s mouth opens in awe:
“You found a digiegg!? That’s so cool! I always wanted to see one”
“You thought it was a common egg?” Don asked
“How was i supposed to know? I only found out when a blacktailmon tried to take it away from me…”
Don presses his lips together, gesturing dismissively:
“Instead of playing the protective mother hen, you could have sold it for a lot of money. What a waste of a golden opportunity”
"Well whatever everything's all done and gone now" he shrugs then looks to Werner ignoring Don "What have you seen anyways..you seem uhh.." Chester puts his hands together "...like you've been out - well I mean, before me and Don"
He stops, unable to find words to articulate his question. Werner’s smile wavered, but remained there:
"Oh, I don't think I have seen as many cool things as you guys! The region my family's from is quite peaceful, or... used to be until recently"
"So you broke your horn tripping on a flower?" Don crosses his arms.
Werner smile softens in a sad one, his eyes looking down "oh, so you've noticed....."
There’s a heat wave in the spring water from Chester’s end, enough to bring steam up. Werner pokes the broken tip of his horn with his metal hand:
“I used to wander off the village when I was younger. I just... I guess I always felt a bit antsy, more eager to explore the world than anyone I knew. And I got into finding things, old things, you know? Things that have a history in it, that you could tell something about the world just by studying them. So I’d go out by myself and find ruins, old and forgotten areas, trying to look for something that could offer me a glimpse of the past” he sighed, looking up to the sky “and… well, when I was out near a lake, I accidentally tipped an old electrical tower onto the water and that woke up the Seadramon living there. He wasn’t very happy with the commotion, I think he uh, thought I was attacking him…”
He paused. Both Donovan and Chester were listening to the story intently.
“I was lucky I got out of that alive. Recovery took a while and some of my data was too damaged to repair. I’m lucky I got my hat, or I’d be rather embarrassed by it. It’s not a very exciting story at all…” he lets out a chuckle in an attempt to make things sound more lighthearted than they were
Despite Werner’s attempt to keep the mood up, the other two were clearly somber. Don was looking down to the water, seemingly lost in thoughts. Chester had only his head out of the water, a concerned frown on his face.
“What about you, Don?” Werner asks.
“What…?” Don replies absentmindedly, snapping back to reality.
“How was your first digivolution?”
“Oh. Oh, uhh…” he shuffles, sits back straight against the rocks “it was… it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary”
“Nothing about you is ordinary, tho” Werner says “You’re a very unique digimon. You even got your own name all by yourself!”
“Well, you know what they say, labels are for archives” Don says with an odd modesty, clearly not accustomed with honest compliments “but my evolution was a bit of a blur. There was a fight, and a flash of light covered my vision, and suddenly I was several feet taller”
“Who started the fight?” chimes in Chester.
“Which digimon was it?” Werner asks.
“Why are you guys so curious all of a sudden?” Don asks indignantly.
“Well I remember you asking about mine and you never told me yours sooo..” Chester didn’t continue but he just kept looking at donovan waiting for an answer.
Don lets out a sigh, but his body is still tense and his eyes are anywhere but towards the other two digimon:
“It was a Megadramon and a Gigadramon. I was told to fight them. Her ord-- I mean, my order was to, well, defeat them. In order to get to Machinedramon…”
The wizardmon raised his eyebrow at the moment he said ‘her’ “So….some other digimon told you to fight them? What for I mean what was your job? I don’t see you the type to fight with anybody just cause someone told you.”
Donovan snapped his head towards Chester, and for a moment he almost looked offended for… something. But he quickly took a hold of himself, and waved his head away from Chester:
“I wasn’t supposed to fight them per se. It wasn’t meant to be a fight. The idea was to distract them and then defeat them with an item I received from, uh, my boss. A Dramon killing item. It just... “ he hunched his shoulders, curling up on himself “... it got a little messy”
He paused, fighting against either his own words or his own feelings, and then looked back to Chester.
“And why I took the contract is none of your business”
“Two Ultimate level digimons…” Werner mused, almost to himself “that must have been really hard. I don’t think any of us could win a fight like that. Especially without knowing how to digivolve! It just seems unfair”
Don huffs, but says nothing.
Chester sat there in the silence before he spoke up again “So basically you were used as a bait. Where was your boss or coworkers in all this? I mean two ultimates and one little… you. I’d think they’d of made you data and ate you for lunch.”
Don this time didn’t bother not to look offended - he leaned his body towards Chester, poking at the Wizardmon’s bare chest:
“Remind me how much do you know about teamwork? Because last I checked the only person you ever cared about in your life was a stupid egg that couldn’t even hatch!”
Werner left out a small gasp of surprise, one of his hands reaching his mouth.
Chester looked down to Donovan's finger poking at his wet chest. With a blink while frowning he looked up to Don with a fire in his eyes and grabbed at his finger.
“One. don’t poke me. Two. you don’t know shit about me, so how about you piss off? If you don’t,I don’t know if I can stop the instinct to light you on fire.”
“Big words for someone partially immersed in water. Try it and see how well you fare on that, matchstick”
“Guys!” Werner waves his arms, which shouldn’t look threatening except for the fact his arms are two big machine guns “we’re here to relax…”
“I just wanted to talk” Don complains, and tries to yank his hand away from Chester’s grip. Chester smirked as Donovan’s failed attempt, after Werner had him go dead quiet.
“I’m not the one that lost his shit at a question.”
“Oh, don’t give me that crap, I heard the disdain in your voice. And you may think you’re so cool being all rebellious and free from any burden or responsibility but you don’t know shit about me either. I thought there was too much to lose! I’d do anything to get that job done, I would gladly kill myself for her if--”
He cut himself sharply amidst his rant and leans back, having said too much but too proud to admit it.
“Let me go” he says after a short pause, pulling his hand yet again but with less intensity, merely a statement.
“No, I won’t let you go.” his tone still aggressive towards Donovan and kept him in a grip. “I mean I don’t know shit about you, true.” giving a pause realizing don cut himself off then continued “That’s why we’re talking in the first place and I’m curious as to why a digimon like you would kill yourself for another digimon.”
Don gritted his teeth. His first thought was to materialize the data of his gun and aim it straight at this misshapen puppet-looking, broad shouldered asshole right between those fiery, deep blue eyes. Why were his eyes SO blue?
But then he glanced quickly at werner, his concerned expression, and took a deep breath, leaning forward towards Chester.
“There’s no point in talking about it. What do you know about the emotion the humans call love? Nothing” his mask muzzle was but  inches away from the Wizardmon’s forehead “You wouldn’t understand even if I explained it to you”
Chester didn’t say anything he kept frowning and let Donovan go from his grip. The tension that had been building up at this point snapping, he then grabbed Donovan by the shoulders. Roughly kissed him afterwards pushing him to the edge of the spring and slapped him hard.
The sequence of Chester’s actions were so haphazard and unpredictable the Astamon got literal whiplash, and all he could do was to stare at the other digimon in a mix of shock, outrage and slight arousal (much to his annoyance).
“Stop implying that I can’t understand things” Chester added, and made his way to step out of the springs pool to go and dry himself off.
“Oh, you know all about it, don’t you?!” Don finally snapped his mind from his gutter, and his hand grabbed Chester’s ankle as he crawled off the spring, while at the same turning his upper body and yanking Chester back towards the water “alright then! Sit down and listen if you want to so much”
Chester’s weight gave way and he got slammed into the water, almost immediately making the water start to heat up to a boil entirely. Werner in the meantime was able only to let a tiny yelp escape his mouth.
All that came up was Chesters hand at first grabbing Don’s arm then yanked on him to pull himself up. “Start talkin’ cause I’m this close.”
The wizardmon’s hand was almost scolding hot, but Don withheld the wince, and put a single open palm against the other’s chest.
“Her name is Lilithmon. I don’t expect you to recognize the name, being the shut-in you are…”
He pushed Chester away with his hand slowly, just enough to have space between them (and thus avoid the distracting warmth underneath the water) “for starters, I wasn’t hatched in the Primary City. I’m not sure why… my best guess is that i was a leftover from the digiegg black market. Digimons with enough resources are able to bribe or steal digieggs from the city before they hatch, and they’re either sold or raised for cheap labor. A pretty smart move from a business point of view… you don’t have to worry about betrayal if the first words your minion learn is ‘Yes,sir’”
“Anyways, I met her when I was already a rookie, falling under her orders… and falling hopelessly in love with her as well. She was sophisticated and alluring and when she gave me an attachment to help me absorb data faster, I was hooked. Which led me into a blind quest to prove my worth to her since she would treat a chair with more kindness than she treated me. I was determined to become stronger, and I went quite the lengths to achieve that. I didn’t care what I had to do, or who I had to use, or how many times it took, if I became a Demon Lord, I would have a chance with her… or so I thought”
He shook his head “when I finally became Astamon I realized those feelings weren’t real. The attachment wasn’t for data absorbing, it affected my emotions core. It was turned off once I digivolved, and…” he shook his head. He still remembers it so vividly “I didn’t want to believe it, at first. But when I looked at her, and felt nothing, I knew that I had to go”
He leans back and lets his head fall backwards, his muzzle pointing to the sky.
“I’m pretty sure she meant for this to happen too. Not that it matters anymore…” his voice tone was absent minded, his thoughts clearly somewhere else.
“Is that why you’re being chased right now?” Werner tilted his head.
“Partially. They want me to keep working for them, with a change in… job titles” Don kept his eyes lost on the sky above as he replied.
“I digivolved because of her… because I loved her so much. Because I wanted to be a Demon Lord like her. And now I have to wonder if I would be a different digimon if I had never gone through that hell. Forever.”
With a sigh, he straightened his back and got up “there you have it” he said, and Chester knew it was directed at him despite Don having his back to the other ones “hope you’re happy” with a slight flap of his wings, he stepped out of the water.
Chester was silent listening in, the water's heat toned down and his hand cooled off. The threat wasn't there anymore after hearing that, why would he? Chester watched Don step out the water and just said a tiny “I guess...” before sinking into the spring again turning his head over to werner not sure what to do now.
Werner offered Chester a look that said “I don’t know what to do either”. Once Don was out of sight, he moved over to the Wizardmon, and whispered:
“We should do something for Don… it seems the city brings him sad memories”
“Yeah, I get that” Chester replied “but what can we do to cheer him up?”
The Gargomon looked up, tapping his finger against his chin, and his expression lit up.
“I think I know what we can do” he paused, and then frowned in a concerned smile “but you will have to put in an effort not to lose your temper”
Chester looked at Werner with a puzzled expression.
Half an hour passed by since the hot spring, and the door of the bedroom creaked open. Don wasn’t sleeping, too many thoughts in his mind to do so. He was leaned against the window, still on his hotspring robe, and peeked over his shoulder to the sight of Chester and Werner’s head coming from the door gap.
“What do you two want?”
“Uh… we were thinking… maybe… maybe, we, uhh, we could…” Chester stuttered.
“Can we sleep with you?” Werner asked. Don blinked in surprise.
“Why…?”
“Why?! Well I mean, isnt… isnt it obvious?” Chester tried to speak though it was very rough.
“We like you and we are sorry about what you went through and we wanna be close to you” Werner said without skipping a beat. Both Chester and Don showed a visible blush.
“Uhm… yeah” Chester agreed, practically curling up on himself.
Don had an almost outraged expression, but it was mostly a mix of confusion and embarrassment.
“Also we are naked and it’s kinda cold out here so can we get an answer soon?” Chester said.
“Wha-- gods. Come on in already”
Chester practically fell into the room as Werner pushed his way in as well. Don took a few tentative steps towards them.
“After all I said… do you still really wanna…” he bit his lip and couldnt finish the sentence. Then he felt two arms embracing him.
“Of course Don”

@blucpincushicn (x):
🌀   The speedster chases away his lingering nerves and the old but fond memories of exploring haunted mansions and castles with his team as he comes back to reality. How young then, he’d felt. Eyes wide and full of rebellious spirit, so much has changed since then. The last of his nostalgic thoughts slip away when Sonic’s focus returns back to the screen, ears raising back up at attention.
Tumblr media
Ah yes. Jack’s Lament had begun, Sonic noted with a tiny smile. He knew all these songs by heart, although this one was always one of his favorites. It was certainly quite the performance, even after all these years. It was simultaneously bouncy and dramatic, with a tune that was ever so catchy even if the mood was somber. Once again the blue blur was reminded by how much he enjoyed musical numbers.
He has to resist the urge to hum along, in fact. Shoulders tremble a bit again while Sonic watches the animated character dance across the screen, the glow from the movie casting an otherwise gloomy wash on his azure painted fur. For a moment he even forgets his previously fluttering thoughts over his companion. The hero silently follows along to the song, easily reciting the lyrics from memory alone.
…But who here would ever understand? ♫ That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin, ♫ Would tire of his crown, if they only understood… ♫ He’d give it all up if he only could~ ♫
…Oh, there’s an empty place in my bones, ♫ That calls out for something unknown~ ♫ The fame and praise come year after year, ♫ Does nothing for these empty tears… ♫
The music softened as the song came to a close, signaling that it was moving onto the next stretch of plot points. Sonic lets out a small sigh with a puff of visible fog, ears drooping slightly, gaze somewhat glossy and distant. What a classic.
Tumblr media
And of course, with the lament coming to an end, so did his focus on the movie. green eyes silently wander over back to Shadow, his train of thought once again delving back into sap territory.
Sonic wouldn’t of anticipated the sudden shift in Shadow’s own attention as he’s suddenly met with that piercing ruby gaze and- oH
Tumblr media
Crap. CRAP. Look away, look away!!
Sonic reacts a bit too slow, ears folding backwards and his fur all but poofing out on every inch of his azure coat as he tears his attention away from the agent. Oh no. Ohhh no. Shadow definitely saw that. Eye contact was made. Gaia damn it this is bad this is baaad-
Tumblr media
❝ Huh? ❞ Is all he can respond with, the pitch in his tone a little higher than he intended. Glancing back, he watches Shadow rid himself of his jacket and lean over- what was he doing?!
It takes Sonic a second to register the cozy fabric being draped over his form, leaving him blinking several times before he realized what was happening. He unlocks his arms from around his knees and grabs onto the hems of the coat, staring in awe at the article of clothing he’d just acquired.
     Shadow gave me his coat??
Tumblr media
Oh. Oh dear. Sonic hadn’t even realized how chilly it’d gotten out. His body had been responding to it- come to think of the slight trembles of his shoulders, but he’d been so distracted by thoughts he hadn’t even picked up on the signals his body had been sending him. Was this why he was feeling so jumpy?? Surely his emotions had contributed to some of it, but…
And clearly Shadow noticed. He’d noticed before Sonic even noticed. Gee… he really was just a mess tonight, wasn’t he? Still, it certainly didn’t stop the bloom of warmth and butterflies that took off in his chest as the faint scent of coffee hits his nose. Okay… Rein it in, Sonic. Keep it cool. Act normal. Pretend like you totally didn’t just get caught staring.
Tumblr media
❝ H-heh… Y’know I’ve survived sub-zero temperatures way outside the stratosphere, right? ❞ The hedgehog teases quietly, shooting the agent an amused look as he stretches up and wriggles his arms into the sleeves of the coat so he could comfortably hug his knees again. It a good humored jab, certainly not one Sonic made intending to start anything. He further solidifies that point by continuing before Shadow can get a word in.
Tumblr media
❝ …Thanks tho’. I appreciate it, I really do. Not a huge fan of the cold, if’m honest. ❞
It really was… kind of the agent. Not something Sonic would have expected, yet somehow he didn’t feel as surprised as he should be. After everything he’s witnessed from his companion tonight, the speedster honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Shadow leaned over and put his arm around Sonic and maybe tilted the hero’s face up with a hand, leaned down and-
Tumblr media
……..Yeah okay, we’re not finishing that thought. Whatever happened to platonic?? Sonic was trying to be a good friend, not get caught up in…whatever that train of thought was leading to. He really needed to get a rein on his feelings tonight or he wasn’t gonna make any actual headway. Sonic didn’t wanna just be a sitting, stuttering duck the entire time.
So, he thinks of a diversion, if only from his own stupid feelings as the movie led up to it’s next musical act.
Tumblr media
❝ Hey… what’d you end up getting from the convenient store? ❞ Sonic whispers, completely pretending like he wasn’t using this as an excuse to glance at Shadow again. Not at all.
Yeah, I was there for some of it, in case you forgot. The words never left his mouth for there were too many implications tied to them to consider in a moment’s notice. For one thing, he knew all too well the speedster had had countless adventures without him, and far be it from him to exaggerate his importance in those he did take part in. For another, none of the ones that applied here were among those Shadow was particularly proud of.
Tumblr media
The first time, the two of them were enemies, and the second, well - he didn’t remember. Not who Sonic was, not what had led up to that moment, not the last time he’d been there. And now that he did, it was even more conflicting to think back on.
They hadn’t exactly been on the same side, that second time around - it had really been more of a... temporary partnership, along-for-the-ride kind of deal. Yet Sonic had never stopped being nice and encouraging, and most of all, he had tried to get him to remember. And he’d been the only one, out of everyone Shadow knew.
     Why ?
The question died on his lips though, as Sonic quickly moved on to thank him for the coat, effectively pushing him off that specific train of thought. “Yeah...” he uttered slowly, forcing his mind to get back to the present time and place. “There’s a notable difference between living and surviving though, wouldn’t you say ?” The semi-rhetorical question was punctuated with a scoff - as if proving his point before Shadow had even voiced it, the speedster hadn’t wasted any time properly putting on the garment. It seemed it was even more welcome than the agent had guessed.
Tumblr media
“I can imagine,” he said with a widening grin, as an actual response to Sonic’s confided sensitivity to cold. “What with how little fur you’ve got growing there.” He just had to get a little jab in there, however objective. It made things feel a bit... less strange, and more like they usually were between them, he thought as he let his gaze linger maybe one too many second on the bundled up hedgehog. It was a pretty cute image...
Tumblr media
Chaos, stop being so weird, Shadow urged himself, snapping his attention away from Sonic and back to the screen a tad too suddenly to look natural. His heart had leaped a minute earlier when they’d unexpectedly made eye contact, and it still felt out of sorts now, after he thought he’d figured out such a perfect distraction. He leaned back some, planting his hands against the ground to try and quell this odd trembling that had overtaken them. And it wasn’t from the cold, that much he could tell.
Maybe he was getting a little too friendly. Not by anyone else’s standards, for sure, but by his own - this was likely further than he had been planning on letting it go. Far out enough of his comfort zone that his own body was responding where his mind couldn’t, sending him signals that he was overdoing it. But then, why did this behavior come to him to naturally ?
Tumblr media
“Hm ?” Ears and head both turned to his companion as a reflex when he spoke up again. So much for paying attention, Shadow thought to himself, almost rolling his eyes. He’d been so caught up in his reflections he’d completely lost track of what was going on for a minute - both in the movie and right by his side. “Same as you,” he said after a brief delay, shifting his weight onto one hand so he could reach into his bag and pick out the snack in question with the other.
Of course, it being a discount plastic bag, it just had to get hung up on the ring of his wrist and tumble over when he pulled his hand back, effectively revealing his other pick that he’d more or less forgotten about already. “Oh, and this,” he added, dropping the first item to pick up the bag of salted dried meat and bringing it up the other’s attention. “Some coworker got me addicted to this stuff. It’s not junk food enough to be forbidden on duty.”
He let out another quiet laugh. It was the excuse he’d heard when no one made a fuss when said coworker had shown up with the snack in question, but he’d come to know better as time went by. It was just awful food all around for most people, too salty for some, too chewy for others, or too odd of a taste. It didn’t distract people like most other junk food did because no one wanted it. It was no surprise, in hindsight, that Shadow would develop a certain affection for it.
Which led to an interesting question...
Tumblr media
“Wanna try ?” he offered in turn, ripping the bag open and handing it out to his rival with a weirdly curious expression on his face.
