For the consideration of the privy council: Grantaire introducing Enjolras to music and cinema.

Consider Enjolras who is "austere in his enjoyments" learning that there is such thing as music that is not just background music to work to, and film that is not just designed to teach you something.

Consider Grantaire gaping at Enjolras for never having heard of the Beatles, sitting him down and forcing headphones over his fluffy golden hair to force him to listen to 'A Day in the Life'.

Enjolras going "this is so stupid" until it hits the second verse and he suddenly becomes very quiet.

Grantaire dragging Enjolras along to the cinema to watch reruns of The Fellowship of the Ring, after which Enjolras grumbles the whole way home, but asks to see the next movie just to "make sure they're all bad".

Grantaire showing up on Enjolras' doorstep with an armful of DVDs because he just has to educate him.

Enjolras discovering Wes Anderson, and the concept of comfort movies, curling up to watch a film not because it means anything or has a deep political comment to make about the human race, but just because it's fun.

gerard way on style, authenticity, gender, british music from the 70s and 90s... and COSTUMES. that was just a primer on the topic i actually want to talk about, which is how different the outfits this past tour have been stylistically from anything gerard has PULLED FROM or DONE.

this entire run, 2022-23, the closest gerard ever got to wearing something he would've worn during the first period (01-13) was the when we were young shows. part making fun: the second night (the first was cancelled) they wore a replica of their revenge album run outfit with HEAVY old age makeup. part homage: night three, they wore something so reminiscent of colleen atwood's work that in conjunction with gerard's tour designer (marina toybina) saying atwood worked with gerard on something not specified and toybina not claiming this outfit as she usually would, led people to believe this was the work of atwood. which is significant because she designed the original black parade costumes!

every single other show was unique in some way. from the tshirts to loose jeans to short shorts to tight skirts to a nurse uniform to a full joan of arc get-up. this isnt to say they didnt divert from the "uniform" back in the day with other outfits -- but the new stuff either became the new regular or they were rare. they were always on theme. even beyond that, the wwwy looks are what people know them for. it's part anti-marketing -- no defintion, no statement. they just performed and people loved it. the only person to even publicize it is toybina, who just talked about the craft.

it's also part anti-glam aesthetically. for a decade, the same figures informed gerard's performance style. in evolving past The Past, he moves away from those figures. never entirely, especially not in artistic ideology. like you can see traces of ferry's idea of the authentic self interrupting expectations or bowie's evolution into softer adaptations of past selves -- but not as much as the hesitant alien look which was explicitly about that. looking at original glam rock style like bowie as ziggy stardust, there is an accentuation, drama, and single vision which defined mcr's revenge and early black parade aesthetics. those periods were gerard's biggest dedication to hair and make up until hesitant alien, which he describes as a return to glam.

looking at the tour vision today, it has none of these qualities. ive talked about how the outfits (mostly) arent highly dramatic or highly gendered, which is why i dont think calling it drag fits. esp on the drama point, that's a key aspect of glam missed. there's no makeup, no accentuation, no BIGNESS. the tour is marked by its long-range simplicity. when the drama comes, it's in the dirty and off-putting, not style. it's interesting that when way does act as a character, like the office worker or dracula, it's entirely physical like a stage actor not a singer. though those are just sparks. he doesnt "break" because it's just gerard as we know him.

one final thread to address here is the gender sphere. if gerard explicitly pulled from glam rock mcr 1.0 into hesitant alien, and he's mostly divorced from glam now... where is all this newfound gender presentation exploration coming from? from female archetypes (cheerleader, jackie-o) to theatrical gender neutrality (any of the body suits) to what wouldve been called "metrosexual" in 2006 (atlanta, nj2) to just a general feminine outfit (firefly, 8/9 of the 2023 leg) -- the artist has their source, meaning, motivation, sure. this step back from talking about anything is sooooooo genius for getting people to take what they want from the tour's artistic output. interpretation fuels discussion. people keep talking about the possible narratives of the albums. people keep talking about the constructed interpersonal narratives. people will keep talking about the mysterious narrative of this tour.

what people have taken from the looks of this tour is that they are a recontextualization of symbols gerard has always connected to -- one example is how cheerleaders went from an old failed pitch to the im not okay mv to revenge photoshoots to the blood and teenagers mvs. but unlike the wwwy outfits, he isnt using the symbols in the same way. it's entirely new that he becomes the exploited female figure he's attached to. the inspiration is the self. there's no avoidance. i think "foundations" had a lot do with the direction of the tour -- its self-reflection forming a new image, in both lyrics and sound, is exactly what the tour looks have been about. not Glam, not Post Glam... not mcr 1.0, not not mcr 1.0... making up new words for an old language to write stories not possible with just the old

anywho here are maneskins albums ranked according to which ones i like best, if you're also into them i would love to hear your thoughts (this is also LONG AS FUCK)

1. TEATRO D'IRA

this was the first one i listened to, i dont even remember why, i vaguely remember thinking of beggin' and being like,, omg i remember that song, i wonder if they have any good albums. so i googled which maneskin album was best and MY LIFE WAS TRANSFORMED. every single song on this album is such a banger there are no skips, like usually on albums i like there are at least a couple songs where i'm like,, ehhh could be better. NOT HERE. idk which song is my favourite i think it's a tie between IWBYS, coraline, zitti e buoni, and vent'anni (literally that is half of the album, that's how good it is).

anyway i love love love the hard rock sound, but it's also not just that, like there is so much variation but it's all very cohesive. maneskin is known for their unique sound so that makes sense but my mind is still sort of boggled. it has like some harder songs but they all feel emotional?? i dont even speak italian but without even looking up the translation i almost cried from coraline because it was so beautiful. and vent'anni is ON ANOTHER LEVEL. IT IS THE PERFECT SONG TO END AN ALBUM WITH. it like combines all the ideas of the album into one song, it has hard rock elements but it still almost feels like a ballad.? GOD I LOVE THIS ALBUM. i think it might be my second fabourite album of all time now,,, it's just actually perfect. i think it's the best album i've heard in 2024. FUCK ITS SO GOOD.

2. RUSH! (ARE U COMING?)

GOD GOD GODDDDD THIS ALBUM. this is a totally different sound to any of their other albums. it's also LITERALLY DOUBLE THE LENGTH OF THEIR PREVIOUS LONGEST ALBUM (il ballo della vita, which is 34 minutes) WHICH MEANS THIS ALBUM HAS ONE HOUR AND EIGHT MINUTES OF MUSIC. TEATRO D'IRA ONLY HAS 30 MINUTES!!!! YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY. okay so this album was at first released just as RUSH! with five less songs, but apparently as they continued touring and stuff they felt they had more to say so they added more songs (correct me if i'm wrong but i think this is what happened). I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS ALBUM, IT IS ONCE AGAIN VERY GENIUS. the songs are almosr completely english. i really love their italian songs, but they have always wanted to write in english so i understand why they're moving back to english.

SO!! this album is so good, it has a lot of extra depth that none of their previous albums had (musically),, except for maybe il ballo della vita. like in teatro d'ira it's basically just bass, guitar, drums, vocals, and tambourine. there might be a couple other instruments but the reason that album is so strong is because of the foundation and stuff. but with rush! there is not only a strong foundation but they also had so many types of songs!!!! there were ballads, there were harder songs, but there were also weird songs like bla bla bla and kool kids. i really LOVE kool kids, i love the punk sound. i think my favourite songs are HONEY (ARE U COMING), off my face, gossip, timezone, baby said, feel, and mammamia but EVERY SONG IS SO GOOD. just like the prev albums THERE ARE NO SKIPS!! that is so crazy for me because even with my one love (david bowie's ziggy stardust and the whatever lol) there is one skip, and måneskin has THREE ALBUMS WITH NO SONGS I WANT TO SKIP. THIS IS SO RARE FOR ME YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. i got off track there back to rush. this album is, also, SO COHESIVE. despite all the different styles they try it all fits together so well, it's such a magical experience to listen to this album. okay so this album was going to be number three on this list but i'm going to switch it now bc im currently listening to it and writing this is sort of changing my mind lol, ITS SO GODDAMN GOOD. tbh i would say this album is equally aa good as teatro d'ira but i have a sentimental attachment to teatro already lol and it's also more my usual style of music.

3. Chosen (this is an ep but whatever)

so this was their first album thing they ever released, it's mostly covers but there are two originals which are the first two songs. the originals are SO GOOD expecially for being some of the first music they ever released????? im obsessed with chosen (the song), i really REALLY love the line "this is not music, this is my life, this is what i live for." IT FEELS SO TRUE BC THATS HOW I FEEL ABOUT MUSIC (i literally do not make music i just like it lol but its like an important part of my life idfk but this line just hits hard) anyway i think the reason i like this album sm is because it's a lot more lighthearted?? i really like the style of their music, how it all feels connected even though it's mostly covers. also i think i like this album so much too because i found this english translation where they competed on x factor and most of these songs were there (if anyone wants the link lmk).

my favourite song by far tho is SOMEBODY TOLD ME. GOD FUCKING DAMN THEY EXECUTED THAT SONG SO WELL. and their FUCKING PERFORMANCE on x factor that went with it was SO GODDAMN GOOD. i love watching choreography and stuff, its my fucking jam, but i dont usually feel actual emotions about it?? like obviously it was very attractive, damiano is stunning, but also it was just so gorgeous..?? i felt real emotions watching that one performance, it was so good. im going to put the link at the bottom of the post bc GOOD LORD. god that was a brilliant performance. anyway i just love the sound of this ep, it's very raw and i really love that it was when they were first starting out,,

also the goofy little intros on both of the original songs on these albums are SO FUNNY why did he do that

4. Il ballo della vita

we've reached the final album :(((( i honestly feel bad for putting it at the end, but the reason it's all the way down here is because there's actually a couple songs i don't love, so i'll say those first. the first one is immortale. i cant tell if its a bad song or not, but i think its good, i just personally dont love it lol. but the other one is "are you ready?" this song is not even that bad it's just kind of goofy, but once again, it's not my usual style of music and it's not something i think i would listen to if it wasn't maneskin.

okay now we can get into WHAT I LIKE!!!! WHICH IS LITERALLY THE REST OF THE ALBUM. this album's style is very similar actually to the chosen ep, except it's all originals, and it's also VERY EXPERIMENTAL. i love love LOVEEEE that. like you can tell this is their first lp by how many different things they try. they're finding their style BUT IT STILL REMAINS EXTREMELY IDENTIFIABLE. on x factor their little music coach guy kept emphasising that when the other judges commented on how maneskin should try different styles and saying that its more important to be recognisable, but MANESKIN DID BOTH!! they tried so many tyoes of songs with different structures and stuff, but they also remained maneskin. obviously damiano's vocals are a huge part in that, he has a distinct af voice, but it's also the other instruments, i particularly noticed vic's bass, and i love LOVE thomas's riffs OMG. this isn't even just on this album. i dont play guitar so i have no idea if he's technically skilled (i think he is???) but i LOVE HIS STYLE AND THE CLASSIC MANESKIN RIFFS OMGGGGG. anyway tho the reason this album is so good bc it has so much variation, although i would say it's not as cohesive as the other albums, even chosen. my favourite songs tho are definitely torna a casa, fear for nobody, and close to the top. torna a case is a BEAUTIFUL ballad. it's brilliant and amazing,, i LOVE that song.

also, they made a documentary about the making of this album which was so so interesting. it was very real, and you kind of get an insight into their dynamic as a band, which was just so SHAJAISISI. but it definitely made me appreciate this album more when i could actually get a look into its production. anyway listen to torna a casa it's gorgeous.

seriously, this band is so good. i'm obsessed with them yeah but they're honestly revolutionary. not only are they basically the only world famous italian band (that i know of at least?? lmk if there are any), but they do so many INTERESTING THINGS. i have been SEARCHING for a modern band who takes old music, particularly 70s bc that's what i'm into, and takes inspiration from it but still makes something original. they are doing so much for music nowadays, obviously there are lots of amazing modern rock bands, but the fact that maneskin is SO popular is crazy to me, it makes me so so happy. and not only that, it's also so amazing that there are two queer band members (vic and ethan) who (especially victoria) talk about being queer. they also act very modest in interviews and stuff, which i really appreciate, and they're all very well-spoken and good at communicating their thoughts even though it's in a second language, which can be SO FRUSTRATING sometimes bc you know what you want to say but it can be so hard in a second language. they are just very eloquent and they act very wonderful (i say "act" and "seem" bc i understand it's a parasocial relationship lol, they could all be assholes, but they seem very, VERY genuine). they all impress me a lot and i am so excited to see what they do next.

hi ziggy <3 life is hard in general but today is sunday and i got dnd later so i'm actually okay right now :3

The game im playing is project zomboid where u play as a lonely little human who is trying to survive in the zombie apocalypse and i love to find a good house for a base and then start filling it up with stuff and trying to learn as many skills as i can (I'm even doing my best to learn farming and car mechanics this time, even though i think theyre boring) but uh yeah u go around looting buildings and build things and kill zombs and stuff and its very fun! I love to collect trinkets and other things, to put up around my house so it's all comfy cozy :) (my fave things to collect are teddy bears but i dont find them very often... in my current base i only have two so far...) how are you doing? i havent been on tumblr much so idk what you might be into rn, but id love to hear about it?

I won't spoil Alan wake ii if you havent played it yet, but ngl while I dont think Kojima is bad at all, its really opening my eyes a bit. Sam Lake (real last name is finnish or a lovecraftian god) uses what he's inspired by way more integrated into his games. And the interplay of multiple forms of media including live action and music and, god help me for uttering this overused phrase, playing with the fourth wall, is something that makes Kojima look like simultaneously like an amateur and an elitist at the same time.

Let's say Kojima likes David Bowie. He'd have a character named David Bowie, Otacon would call in on the comms and say "Snake, that's david bowie. He's named after David Bowie the singer. He was a glam rock singer active from the late 1960s to 2016 most known for Ziggy Stardust" and the entire thing would be a thinly veiled excuse to hang out with David Bowie and put his likeness in the game and maybe release some haute couture sunglasses or something, while also namedropping extremely esoteric things Kojima can feel smart over knowing people will have to go to Wikipedia to understand the concepts he stayed up last weekend reading about. I cant really give an example for Alan Wake/Control like that entirely because everything is so worked in. Yeah its clearly Twin Peaks and X-Files and True Detective and a bit of that sparse Scandinavian Noir and some Lovecraft as well. But everything is blended together without coming to a screeching halt while you listen to the games creator tell you about the stuff he likes.

Not that I dislike MGS or anything, but in terms of "visionary" creators I think Sam Lake has just pulled ahead of Kojima in a really big way. He feels more like those TGWTG people who were only there as a stepping stone to their big hollywood career (which never panned out) and likewise Kojima treats his games more like the artsy movies he's always wanted to make instead of trying to be truly creative.

That's essentially the conclusion I've come to, yeah. Plus, Lake seems to embrace making games while Kojima seems to bitterly regret that he'd be laughed out of Hollywood.

Hell, MGS is supposed to be like an overblown, larger-than-life metaphor/representation of real, serious topics like nuclear proliferation and yadda yadda yadda. Except it gets muddled and stupid because the mechs that symbolize nuclear weapons are just dangerous for being nuclear launch platforms, because metaphors are hard. 30% of the earth's population was a child soldier who now wanders the land fighting for obscure philosophical reasons but shows little to none of the actual problems associated with former child soldiers, and 45% of all military personnel are clones or genetically engineered or turbocyborgs or something. Because this story that tries to touch on Very Serious Issues about soldiers and their place in the world was written in a country with pretty much 0 living combat veterans by a man who's never raised a fist in anger

No it feels like she was lying the entire time. Or more accurately; she was not telling the whole truth and definitely withholding information.

That she's traveling from world to world, always being "lucky" to be the only surivor? That is true, from a certain point of view.

Like, I dont feel like its a Kiana/HoV situation where HoV blows up their house and takes off Ziggy's arm, and Kiana has no memory of it because her evil twin did it. I feel that its more that Vita has obligations she has to do and while she isnt enthustiastic about it, she is also not against doing them. How do I put this...? Like knowing you have to take out the dishes from the dishwasher. You dont feel like doing it now, but you know youre going to have to do it later.

I feel like Vita is that, but about destroying bubble worlds.

Random thoughts since I finished RPM yesterday

- idk if anyone else noticed but Ziggy has an earring and I died on the spot when I realized that. I NEVER NOTICED IT. ITS SO SMALL.

I have questions

Im not sure if i love or hate this movie

But its relatable, so i kind of love it

I love how Evelyn is so obsessed with the thought of having a perfect son like kyle she dosent realise how horrible she can be too ziggy

I love how ziggy doesn't think about his mom at all becuase hes surrounded himself with his obsession with lila and his music but he ahs also convinced him self that his mom thinks him and his music are absolutely ridiculous.

And that scene where his dad asks him if hes happy and he explains his feelings, he almost looks miserable when hes brushed off and it was only becuase of that article, even when evelyn comes in and ziggys dad (i forgot his name) almost immediately refuses to talk about it.

But i feel so bad for the dad hes so overlooked because his family are kind of narcissistic and pay him no mind

But even the scene at the start where ziggy offers to show his parents his music he looks kind of upset when they brush him off, its the most heartbreaking thing to be so proud of something just for your parents to not be interested or think its stupid whenever you do try and open up to them and then they complain you dont tell them anything.

But the ending is very emotional

Alright so, most OP powers and why:

Cataclysm... its... infinite destruction.... if you could pinpoint and control it, its so OP

Akumatization, hey... hey are you unable to get up but youre able to do the equivalent of ringing a bell and having someone do something for you? yeah

Burrow, OP but has extreme negatives that actually even it out, mainly being that you need to make a heavy decision and if you choose wrong you're gonna get corrected. the decision is to be a dick while using the powers or dont be a dick while everyone around you that knows what your power is, screams at you for not fixing this or that terrible thing

Elemental Dragon aka Triple Dragon Threat, but only for the 3 powers at the start thing unlike all the other Miraculous

Second Chance, my man, my friend, my ma'am, (i forgot your pronouns and i dont wanna open a new tab or alt-tab to check) this is one of my favorite powers to abuse, do you have social anxiety? do you worry about what youre saying constantly? are you a save scummer especially in visual novel games? here you go!

Voyage, you don't even need to put your whole body through the portal, 'nuff said

Sublimation.... okay so... i'm like 572905720595% sure that this power changes depending on the timeline because the word choice was changed since Penalteam, and while the new Astruc definition drastically nerfs it.... what about when Marc or whoever has the Rooster unlocks the full power? i truly think that this is one of the few miraculous that any Bunny Holder keeps a close eye on just in case it falls into someone with a lot of evil willpower

Amokization, hey... hey you... you wanna have a baby? furry baby human baby? want an eternal manservant? what about a clay wife?

Gift, you ever seen Black Mirror? There's an episode called San Junipero... a couple of old dying ladies end up in like a virtual world of their youth and have a chance to live out their lives again but in the virtual world and ya know, you kinda dont wanna leave now that you have your soulmate (it wasn't exactly like that but yeah), how do you tell your heart no when your every desire is given to you?

i’ve made named characters prior to him but its Grey, he wins the “first character i ever drew more than once AND cared about longer than a week at a time”

there’s a lot just by volume, but i’m gonna go with Milo (formerly mordecai). despite him being one of my dolls his story’s kind of done and dusted and he’s just Vibin so i dont have a lot to say about him most of the time

Ziggy’s a war criminal on the run whose entire squad / found family either died or hates him now thanks to him fucking up a mission, does that count

hmm. I think Cyanide’s probably getting a worse rap than she deserves (haha i mean she deserves it but…) right now but its most b/c i havent really talked about her more recent character development. i like to think im pretty clear about my characters’ intentions and personalities so this doesnt happen often!

26. Have you ever had to change your OC’s design or something else about them against your will?

not that i remember at this point in time? 🤔 there are definitely design elements or personality traits that i didnt intend characters to have when i made them that developed over time or flipped a switch on me when i made them, but i havent been forced to change any that i can think of!! at least not anymore LMAO

i guess you could count a different doll for Lance than i expected! i meant to order him new but there were some….. shenanigans… and i ended up having to buy him secondhand with a faceup i wasn’t after. its all cool now though he’s perfect

for songs that cheer me up i'd definitely say she bangs the drums by the stone roses, its got such good vibes to me. also moonage daydream by david bowie (and like half the songs off that album tbh). as for the best year for music i think personally 1979, so many albums i love came out that year, but 1972 is such a good answer as well!!

okay!! really really love this question cause i <3 album covers so so much n i think about them a lot. ive even half made an album cover uquiz. i should really make a playlist of my fave covers. so there’s wayy too many to list but off the top of my head: bop till you drop - ry cooder, the last time i did acid i went insane - jeffrey lewis, remember that i love you - kimya dawson, androgyne - gyasi, groovy grubworm - harlow wilcox, pretty much any wilco cover lol, townes van zandt self titled, new skin for the old ceremony - leonard cohen, sweetheart of the rodeo - the byrds, nive sings! - nive nielsen and the deer children, the night the light went on at long beach - electric light orchestra, fear fun - father john misty. and so on and so forth!

as for album covers i dont like. well… there are plenty… i hate to admit this but most of neil young’s album covers across his entire discography (bs and csny etc included) are not very good. i love pony by orville peck but i hate show pony (and honestly most of the songs on that album weren’t great either lol). also the bronco cover was only okay. me n my bestie have a vendetta against pronounced jah-see by gyasi for a myriad of reasons. i’ve never liked tim by the replacements even if it’s one if the greatest albums ever. can’t think of any others but rest assured i am a hater of many <3
