okay so i made a post (here) kind of about this a while ago, but here’s a full analysis on ian and mickey’s relationship and their struggles with abandonment and commitment issues:
as the seasons went on, one of the things made most clear about mickey milkovich, was his love language, acts of service. the way that mickey views love is that loving somebody is doing grand gestures to keep them with you. throughout the entire show, this is made clear, for example: robbing a man’s house for ian then kissing him (overcoming a huge fear of his), getting terry off of ian so that he would get more hurt than ian would, kissing ian in public, coming out for ian and getting the living shit beat out of him, (almost) murdering ian’s half-sister for calling the military police on him, snitching on a huge cartel and getting himself thrown back in prison for ian, attempting to escape prison again for ian, and eventually, faking marrying ian’s sister so that he could marry ian.
however, ian isn’t the same as mickey in that way. does ian love mickey? fuck yeah. but is ian as willing to do as much crazy shit in the name of love as mickey is? not really. it’s not that ian doesn’t love mickey or doesn’t risk a ton for mickey, because he does, he just loves mickey in a different way.
so, since mickey views love as doing grand gestures that could possibly risk everything in your life, he has a hard time understanding that people can love people in different ways that don’t involve a lot of danger. so when ian doesn’t go to mexico and doesn’t sign the marriage license, mickey feels as if ian doesn’t love him. his thought process is kind of just like i’ve done so much for ian, i’ve done everything to keep us together, but he still can’t commit, and that hurts mickey! it’s so obvious that he feels that way in 10x08 when ian says, “i wanna know how you feel!” and mickey just looks beyond pissed and hurt. and in the next episode, ian tries to explain himself, but mickey says, “no, you’re just saying that you don’t love me enough now”. to an extent, he understands that he and ian have different minds that work in very different ways, but he can’t grasp the thought of ian not signing those papers, because to him that’s a grand gesture, and a grand gesture = loving somebody.
but the reason that ian doesn’t sign the papers isn’t because he doesn’t love mickey, it’s because he’s afraid to commit. debbie tells him that he’s scared of commitment, and ian tells mickey himself that the reason he’s scared is because of his parents. and truly, it makes sense. from what we’ve seen of frank and monica, it’s been stated that they’ve been married many times; and ever since season 4 the show has made a point of showing ian’s fear of becoming his mother. and historically throughout shameless ian hasn’t had the best romantic history. he’s been with so many men that he tells a nurse that he doesn’t even know how many, we’ve seen him with men old enough to be his father- possibly even grandfather, and every single of age boyfriend (including mickey, sorry) has treated him like actual dog shit at one point. it makes sense that he’s afraid. he grew up seeing his parents fight with each other and leave each other (and their children) and then seeing his sister get into toxic relationships with men who, in ian’s words, weren’t very nice to her. his view on love is warped, and yes, he does love mickey, but loving mickey scares ian, and believe me, it scares mickey, too.
the real explanation to most of ian and mickey’s conflicts throughout the show is that ian has commitment issues and mickey has abandonment issues. they both grew up gay in abusive households on the south side, and loved each other regardless, but it was hard for them, and always will be hard.

✨️ Tag Game Tuesday Wednesday ✨️
Name: Lyds ⚘️
Age: 34 for another 4 weeks or so 🗓
Where in the world are you? Europe, middle of nowhere📍
The meaning behind your URL: 'Ardent' is one of my favorite words, husband calls me Foxxy cause of my red hair, also it sounds like 'ardent fucks' together so cheeky win 🍑
Your second favorite color: Dusty pink 💕
Any pets? Jasper the bun 🐇
Favorite season: Spring, I feel as if I'm in love with the whole world during it, it kicked in earlier this year and I'm absolutely fine with that 🌸
Last thing you read: Galladrabbles. My brain has been doing its cute thing where it can't focus on reading or writing anything longer than that for the past few weeks 🙃
Last song you listened to: I played the Crazy Ex Girlfriend soundtrack while getting ready to go out, so Gettin' Bi (which has become an anthem of mine ngl) 🎵
What are you wearing right now? A hoodie with a crumbling print of a tattooed and pierced out princess Jasmine taking a selfie, black sweatpants and socks with chihuahuas wearing Santa hats on them, my go-to sexy at home look 😅
A hobby of yours: Writing fanfiction and planning our home makeover, both usually taking place only in my head 💭
Your comfort show or movie: Got several, going with Pride and Prejudice (the 1995 BBC miniseries) this time 📜
And finally, what are you up to today? Had a monthly supply of hay delivered to me this morning, went to a job interview that went surprisingly well, did some chores and now I'm chilling here 😎

✨️ Tag Game Fandom Edition ✨️
Your name: Lyds 🌸
Your age: Still 34 😅
Your first fandom(s): Not sure what qualifies, but probably House M.D. 🩺
Your current fandom(s): Though my hyperfixations are always changing, Shameless/Gallavich is the only fandom I actively engage in 🧑🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏻
How did you first get into fandom? I was part of a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp RPG message board where I played 3 characters and we also used to write what I now realize was fanfiction on the spot over MSN. A bunch of us were obsessed with House M.D. and someone must have mentioned fanfiction.net to me cause I got hooked on reading Hilson and Huddy stories around the same time 👀
How long have you been engaging with fandom spaces? The RPG/House era started in 2008, but I didn't become active on Tumblr and AO3 until getting involved in the Shameless fandom as of April 2022 🗓
How often do you read fanfics? When my brain is in the right place, I'd say a couple stories a week 📱
Top 3 characters from your current fandom(s): Ian gallagher, Mickey Milkovich, Castiel (still going through Supernatural and loving every bit of it) 💙
Have you ever written a fic for a fandom? If so, shout it out! Yes, still at one completed ficlet and a Galladrabble collection on my AO3, not counting the 5-6 WIPs I have in my docs 📂
Have you ever drawn fanart for a fandom? Nope, can't draw to save my life 🙃
Share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about: Probably not the most original one, but Mickey never liked his full name until Ian stated he thought it was beautiful. Him using it in his wedding vows is symbolic of him reconciling with the darkest parts of himself and accepting them before offering his whole self to Ian, a declaration of love for both of them in his own way. The fact that it somewhat mirrors the act of him apprehensively coming out in front of his own hostile audience, only to confidently show his self-acceptance and love for Ian in front of their favorite people 6 years later is just icing on the (wedding) cake 💖
You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. What episode, clip, or scene are you showing them? The "I can explain this" scene when Mickey gets shot in the ass and the social worker appears at the Gallagher house, it's peak Shameless madness 😄
And finally, what does fandom mean to you? A sanctuary of creativity and comfort where we can all be, make and enjoy whatever we want, the closest thing to utopia there is 🫶
Tagging @ian-galagher, @sickness-health-all-that-shit, @gallawitchxx, @gardenerian, @squidyyy23, @juliakayyy, @whatwouldmickeydo, @auds-and-evens, @thisdivorce, @sleepyfacetoughguy and whoever sees this and would like to play! ✨️

Time for Gallavich wedding headcanons: 1. Besides edible boxers from Carl and the honeymoon Car from Liam, what wedding gifts do they get? 2. What flavor was their wedding cake? 3. THE WEDDING EDITION 😍😍😍😍
Tumblr media
Ian's EMT friends (his real EMT buddies, not the fake ones Paula had him working with) got him a years supply of condoms with a note saying "wait a year before you knock him up." Ian laughed, Mickey got horny, and as he threw the box away knowing they don't need any of that shit, they saw the real gift underneath which was a weekend stay at the fanciest hotel Chicago has to offer. They got a few house warming gifts, which was a hint that they needed to get their own place. Mandy sent weed and lube. They're gay friends, because yes, they have some already. Fuck all things s11. gave them some new toys and Fiona sent down the necklace Monica wore on his first wedding day. Apparently she found it and had been keeping it to give to the first of the siblings to get married. Deep down she always knew it would be for Ian, but she didn't want to play favourites. It's a simple silver necklace with a blue crescent moon. "Pretty fucking perfect" where Mickey's exact words when Ian lifted it up from the box and held it in his hands, swearing to god he could smell her perfume.
Their cake was three tier and Mickey had a different flavour for each. The top was of course carrot cake. You can piece together why, I'm sure. The second tier was white chocolate and raspberry swirl, and the third was chocolate, that was Franny's pick.
120 guests is simple. Gallaghers. Milkovichs that aren't homophobic assholes. Close encounters from Ian's gay Jesus days, kids from the centre that WEREN'T being the security. EMT guests, some of the guys from the club Ian still talks to that he used to dance with, everyone from the Alibi that Mickey can tolerate and of course, their plus ones. Once again, fuck you s11, Ian and Mickey don't need to go out looking for friends.
Mickey will ALWAYS be Mickey to Ian. Mikhalio is his legal name, but it's not his name. Though I do love that Mickey called himself by his legal name when he said his vows. Swoon.
The only thing important to Ian at the wedding was the music. He picked a lot of the songs that represent his feelings toward Mickey and what they mean to one another. Besides that, he allowed Mickey to have the final say. Why? Because he was marrying Mickey and in the end that's the only detail Ian cared about. And two, it's because deep down Ian knew a lot of Mickey's behaviour cycled back to the first wedding that still haunts him. The one he hated but was forced to go ahead with. The one where he had no say and was more for show than for love. This wedding was Mickey's chance to have the dream day to match the dream guy.

Hi Sully! Time for Gallavich wedding headcanons: 1. Besides edible boxers from Carl and the honeymoon Car from Liam, what wedding gifts do they get? 2. What flavor was their wedding cake? 3. How the fuck do they have 120 guests at the wedding? Who are they inviting? (only to claim they have no friends a season later?) 4. Why did Ian say Mickey and not Mikhailo? 5. What's one thing in the wedding that way important to Ian? (Chiavari chairs level important)
Ahhhhhhhh this is my favorite thing ever! Sorry for the delay @gallavich-headcanon!
Ok (cracking knuckles)
1. Besides edible boxers from Carl and the honeymoon Car from Liam, what wedding gifts do they get?
So they get a couple of books about relationships and marriage from Lip (to a very uninterested Mickey). Debbie gives them a coffee maker that really she wants to keep in the house for her to use. Fiona sends them money for their honeymoon (that she strongly suggests should be in Florida). Frank attempts to give them the “gift of knowledge” which is drunken marriage advice. Mandy, Iggy and Colin also give them money for the honeymoon in a card that reads “Fucking Finally”. But unfortunately they also get some gifts stolen from the wedding 😩.
2. What flavor was their wedding cake?
Chosen by Mickey…drumroll please…Red velvet 🧑🏻‍🦰
3. How the fuck do they have 120 guests at the wedding? Who are they inviting? (only to claim they have no friends a season later?)
This one is truly a mystery but I think neighbors! Some Milkoviches (in my mind Iggy and Colin are both there and also the uncles that say “gay huh” on season 5). But mainly their southside family like the people that go to the Alibi, the massive group that had that cookout with Kev and V, the ones that were at Frank and Sheila’s wedding, all the people that joined Fiona to bother the racist neighbor etc.
4. Why did Ian say Mickey and not Mikhailo?
Because right before the wedding Ian gets oddly nervous about pronouncing it wrong in the ceremony. He panics and questions if he even pronounces it correctly now so he decides to google it. But when he’s playing the audio Mickey comes in and is all like…“Hello stranger my name is Mikhailo, I don’t believe we’ve met…” which just turns into a running joke so Ian knows he won’t be able to keep it together and he just says fuck it and calls him Mickey all shy and smiley (but he totally calls him Mikhailo during the wedding night 😏)
5. What's one thing in the wedding that way important to Ian? (Chiavari chairs level important)
Music 100%, he goes a little psycho making playlists for the ceremony and the party but secretly he’s always had a couple of songs he considers “theirs” and remind him of their relationship. 🥺

Hi Vey! 5. Hey Anon,
I feel like no one really will be interested in my answers, after the others were quicker but *shrugs* Let's do this anyway.
We see they get a lot of large boxes which makes me think they get some toasters and mixers and other household items that they end up selling during lock-down since they are staying in the Gallagher house anyway. Ian regrets that decision when they have to get the used stuff from Kev and V, but it is what it is. Lip and Tami get them a gift vaucher to a really nice restaurant for date night, Debbie gets them a gift vaucher to a clothes store. Fiona sends a gift vaucher for a sex shop and earplugs for the rest of the family.
Carrot cake, of course. It's Mickey's favourite (Noel's words, not mine) and he placed the order.
Mostly family. Lots of stray Gallaghers from all over. Some Milkoviches who don't want to kill them. Neighbours. Maybe colleagues from old jobs, whatever. Lots of people who you invite to stuff, without really considering them being "friends friends".
Because Mickey is the one he fell in love with. Ian loves "Mikhailo" and loves whispering the name into sweatslick skin, but Mickey was his first love, he owns his heart, so he made it a point to call him Mickey. Not Mikhailo.
Having Mickey walk up to him, holding his gaze, looking handsome and healthy and glowing, while Etta James sings "At last", putting into words and a gorgeous melody what Ian can't really express himself in that moment.

hi!! i was wondering if you had any laura headcanons you hadn’t talked about/ shared yet? 🤍💙🖤
DO I! Thank you so much for asking, it's really validating that I'm not just here yelling to myself about a lady mentioned like 3 times in 11 seasons.
But to answer your question for real, I have so many headcanons. About her life, her personality, her family... Even alternate universe headcanons okay... How do I even begin about my beloved?
(tw for death, violence, abuse, child neglect, sexual assault of a minor, drugs, etc. I'm not explicit about any of that though, it's a bullet list).
Laura Kateryna Levchuk (13/09/1981)
Parents Gleb and Margaret (they suck okay, we hate them)
She has 5 siblings, the oldest being born in 1979 and the youngest in 1991. (I know all about them too, but I'll spare you.)
They all lived in a trailer park outside of Chicago. (maybe near Cicero? I don't know Illinois well) She shared the top bunk with her younger sister Tess.
They're a religious Ukrainian orthodox family, poor but steady.
She's a little fashion designer like Mickey lol, cutting up her older brother's old clothes, thrifting and sewing.
She's such a 90s girl omg, clips and big earrings
Her brother gets all the special treatment, the younger kids are too young, so Laura's doing the cooking and cleaning, looking after "the boys".
She's a good Christian Girl.
Some idiots at school call her "love c*ck" and unhook her bra when she goes by. She starts smoking cigarettes sometimes.
She travels over an hour to a party in Chicago, July 4, 1993. She's feeling like Cindy F*cking Crawford. I want to reiterate she's 11, her birthday isn't until September. That night she meets Terry, who is 27.
This is horrifying, obviously. It does not stop. Terry calls her "Laurie".
April 1994 she finally has to fess up to her parents that she's pregnant, and they kick her out. She goes to live in the Milkovich house, and doesn't go back to school. This is a whole thing too, but we're speed running here.
Terry was not there on 10 August 1994. She was in a lot of pain, with Terry's sister Randelle, and she was terrified. But she loved Mikhailo Aleksandr with her entire heart the moment she held him.
Laura also became the mom of several other children. She grew to love them as if they were from her own flesh. Joseph, Colin, and Ignatius.
The nephews too. James. Shane and Donald. Arsen. Still just a kid herself, but she was all this unfortunate and rabid brood of Milkoviches had most of the time.
(And— much later— the nieces. Sandra and Cicely.)
Joey, Zofia, Aleksy, Sammy, Lou, Marko, Mitchell, Moe, Tommy (Jesus, so many kids).
She's not a good mom. Of course she isn't, she's a kid! These kids are hungry and dirty and cold more often than not. Things are calmer when Terry is on a run, or on THE run, or in prison, but that's when money is the tightest. However, Laura IS a mama bear at heart and she loves fiercely.
She's as much of a product of Terry as Mickey and Mandy become. He teaches her how to drive a car, and shoot a gun. She has no positive coping mechanisms, a heightened reactivity to emotion, and her interpersonal dynamics are histrionic and intense. At this point she's a Milkovich in all but name, tearing out a girl's hair in chunks and breaking a guy's nose with her forehead. She's tough as nails.
In 1995, a month after Terry and Laurie’s anniversary, she suspected she was pregnant again.
Terry missed the birth of this baby, too. He’d been caught on drug possession.
Amanda Marichka was born April 24, 1996. The birth was just as hard as the first time. She fell in love just as quickly.
She was pretty pissed when Terry got back and immediately started calling their little girl “Mandy”. Apparently Amanda was just too much to say.
Terry asked her if she “wanted to get hitched” over a plate of hot wings during a commercial break a week after Laura's 16th birthday (1997). He's got a ring, and it's the nicest thing anyone has ever given her.
She puts Mandy in a backpack and carries Mickey and goes back to the trailer park for Gleb and Margaret's signatures. She's peeked at by her siblings, but they don't speak. Her parents signed freely, (Laura discovers her mom's affair with a neighbour) giving her the parental permission she needed to marry Terrance Milkovich. She wouldn’t see her family again.
Terry had a split lip and a black eye. He promised to look after her. They had a big party afterwards. The greatest rager of the 1990s South Side. They have a lot of parties.
Terry's abusive, obviously. We aren't surprised. Laura gives as good as she gets, though.
Life was harder after that. No job, no school. There was no escape from crying children or a filthy house. Laura saved up the money Terry gave her for groceries and bills, presents and clothes. So she can't really save money to run off with. She had no family or friends in the outside world to fall back on.
Drinking wasn’t good enough to numb the pain of her life. She got into heroin.
Early morning 13 October 2007, it's still dark, Joey finds Terry and Laura motionless on the sofa. He calls 911, because being 17 doesn't make you immune to finding your dad and step-mom dead on the couch. Timeline splits here, in canon the paramedics wake Terry up, and he surrenders the kids to CPS for a year to run drugs for a cartel.
On a happier note, Laura's a Gwen Stefani fan, and loves old sitcoms. She's bi. She's got a lot of ear piercings around her ears. She's got several tattoos, one of which is "1 Peter 4:8" on her rib cage. In a perfect world she'd have a lovely partner and two cats and no one would hurt her. Oh, and she's pretty good at picking locks and picking pockets. Tiny hands.
This isn't even it. 😬Feel free to ask more questions if I haven't scared you away!

I'm all up in my season 4 feels right now, and for some reason I'm really stuck on the moment where Ian and Mickey realize that they have the option of spending the night at the Milkovich house rather than in the boys' room.
I think it's Mickey who gets it first, when Ian starts making noise along the lines of “c'mon, let's get moving.” It's cold, after all, and they both have wounds that need cleaning.
Mickey nods tiredly, standing to follow Ian back to the Gallaghers', but then he stops, struck by a sudden thought: “Wanna go back to my place?”
Ian pauses. “Your place?”
“Yeah. Fuck we gonna sleep in a tiny ass bed in the same room as your brothers for if we don't have to?”
And they don't have to, Ian realizes; they're not hiding anymore, and Terry is in prison. Still, he hesitates. “What about your wife?”
“Fuck her. What she gonna do? Tell my dad about us?” And Mickey suddenly grins, wide and bright, because the lack of fear is exhilirating, and he gets it now, what Ian meant about him not being free. (Even if Ian was a dick for calling him a coward – but I expect him to make up for it by taking very, very good care of Mickey that night.)
And Ian sees that smile and he knows that he'll never be able to say no to Mickey when he's smiling like that, so he doesn't even bother trying to argue. Besides, why would he - a room of their own and a big bed does sound pretty damned perfect.
(And when they step through the door, the Milkovich house is unexpectedly quiet, but the light's on in the kitchen, and Iggy appears. He missed the baptism because he was out doing Important Crimes but now he's leaning against the doorway with a bowl of cereal in his hands. Why a bowl of cereal? I have no idea, but that's the image stuck in my head, so that's what we're going with. Imagine him continually eating from it, please, probably saying half of his lines through a mouthful of cereal. Ain't got much in the way of manners, Iggy.
Anyway, Mickey stiffens ever so slightly, reflexively taking a step away from Ian, but Iggy doesn't bat a lid at the sigth of their bloodied faces and clothes. It's not an unusal sight in the Milkovich household, after all. Besides: “Jamie called to say dad's back in the joint and you're gay now.”
Mickey blinks; he'd been gearing up for another fight and isn't quite prepared for Iggy's casual summary of the night's events. “Uh, yeah,” he eventually mutters. What else is he supposed to say?
“Okay.” And the things is, he really sounds like it's okay; like it's no big deal; like he doesn't care. Iggy's eyes wander over to Ian. “This your boyfriend?”
And Mickey glances at Ian, but he doesn't hesitate before answering. That part of is over and done with. “Yeah,” he says again.
Ah, the things that small word does to Ian's heart. Yeah. He's Mickey's boyfriend. They are a couple – and no longer one that hides. Ian wants to grin and grin, smile like that smitten fifteen year old who stared starry-eyed at Mickey's retreating back after that first booty call at the Kash and Grab. He wants to kiss every inch of Mickey's body; love every inch of him.
Iggy is still watching him, frowning slightly. “Didn't you use to date Mandy?” he asks, but then he blinks. “Oh. She like your beard?”
“What - ? How do you even know what a fucking beard is? Jesus.” Now that it's been firmly established that Iggy is cool and there's not going to be a second brawl, Mickey feels confident slipping back into his normal cranky self. He guesses that maybe Mandy was their beard, even though she didn't know she was covering for anyone more than just Ian, but that's none of Iggy's business. Besides, he fucking hurts all over and there's a bed that will actually comfortably fit the two of them waiting, so forgive him for not being all that interested in having extended chats with his brother. “C'mon,” he tells Ian, heading for his – their – room.
“Keep the noise down,” Iggy calls pointedly after them, grinning like a loon. Mickey flips him off, but, like, in the nicest way possible.
Ian cleans Mickey's wounds and then his own, while Mickey smokes and watches him. Then they have one round of the gentlest sex they've ever had, and while this is partly due to their various injuries (or entirely due to them, if one were to ask Mickey, who's still self-consciosus about some things, and how is this any or your fucking business anyway, huh?) it's also just... what they want right now. What they need. They’ll be back to their rough banging in no time, but tonight it's less about getting off and more about just getting to hold each other so very, very tight; about being as close to another person as you can ever possibly be.
There's no one to see them fall asleep in each other's arms but for the first time it wouldn't have mattered if anyone did.)
(Where is Svetlana while all this is going down? She's there in the morning, sporting a new hair color, but going by her and Mickey's interaction I'd say they did not see each other to, for instance, have a fight about who gets to sleep in the big bed. I'm going with her spending the night at Nika's – wherever that is, probably some extremely small and horrible place where the majority of the girls from the rub and tug lives, making the Milkovich house an actual step up, unlikely as that would seem – and then heading back early when she's had time to regroup and plan her new strategy.)

I was wondering if you guys had any fics with both mickey and monica. like mickey getting to see ians relationship with his mom. thank you sm!!
Some of these have less of Mickey techically witnessing first hand their relationship but have a lot of both Mickey and Monica in general. Which means Mickey witnessing what Monica does to Ian.
Anywhere Out This Place When Monica decides to moves her family away from the trouble that could follow another one of Frank’s fuck ups, eleven-year-old Fiona has one condition: the Milkoviches are coming with them.
Meeting Hurricane Monica what would mickey do if he was there with ian when monica showed up instead of trevor?
Meeting Her Mickey has the displeasure of meeting Monica. Post Season 4.
Halfway House After his mum took off, Ian sort of expected he'd wind up in foster care. What he didn't expect was to meet a sort of dirty boy called Mickey Milkovich there.
there are two birds in your head Ian has a lot of trouble struggling with his feeling as he journeys with Monica. He eventually calls Mickey.
Bound The rom-coms tell you that finding your soulmate is the hard part. For Mickey and Ian, bonded by accident while they're still teens and still stuck in Southside, that is the only part that’s been easy. A re-telling of the early part of their romance where everything’s the same, but soulmates exist.
Because He Loves Me Ian is having some regrets about leaving with Monica, so he listens to his voicemails for some comfort and assurance that he made the right decision.
as long as i'm here, no one can hurt you “Me and Monica are complicated. Maybe it’s best if we just don’t mention her.”

Frank’s Dementia in 11a
Points to discuss:
Moments where Frank forgot.
Things he might be able to remember.
Other characters finding out.
Aftermath...
So to start of, I made a list of every instance in SEASON ELEVEN A, where Frank’s memory seemed a bit off, I’m not gonna analyze the whole series for this but I’m sure there’s more there. Now:
Moments Where Frank Forgot
11x01
1. Frank’s History of Chicago
While this does appear to imply just the opening monologue, there are actually several moments throughout the episode where Frank is talking about the Gallagher’s running Chicago to Alan. And while this seems like typical “Frank being drunk nonsense”, plus a spectacular opening to the season... I now see it in a different light especially after:
2. Frank’s Memory Elixir
Frank LITERALLY has a line asking for “memory elixir”, meaning booze, which Alan hands him. Ironic since he has ALCOHOLIC DEMENTIA. You can’t tell me that wasn’t intentional!
3. He Forgot Bars Were Closed
Now, I may be reaching here... BUT when Frank enters The Alibi for the first time this season (what a grand enterence btw) he says “I heard somewhere all bars were open again”. V responds by saying something along the lines of “three weeks ago maybe” and that the mayor shut them down again. Frank says “Well who the hell can keep track”. And okay, yeah maybe Frank genuinely didn’t know... but this is the bar he goes to EVERYDAY. Not to mention if they shut down less than THREE WEEKS AGO, Frank should know... idk this one might not count but I added it anyway. Kermit is unaware of bars being open/shut down in 11x03 so moving on:
11x02
4. The Alibi’s Secret Enterence
Okay, again REACHING! However, when Frank entered The Alibi through the Keg Zone door he forgot to use the “secret knock” and Kev had to remind him about it. Now in 11x01 he used the front door (and I’m not sure he knew to use the other door in that ep) but still at least he remembered to use the correct door in 11x02.
11x03
This is where it got noticeable.. strap in, here we go:
5. Taking Franny to School
He took her to the wrong school. This is the same person that knows the Southside perhaps better than his kids (lol), like the back of his hand! He not only took her to the wrong school but a middle/grade school. Franny is in elementary/preschool school. You can see in WHM’s face here that Frank was confused...
6. Uncle V and Aunt Kev
Maybe just a comedic slip up, but Frank calls Kev and V “Uncle V and Aunt Kev” as opposed to what they really are. Maybe he forgot? I’m reaching LOL.
7. Debbie Is Not Fiona
Frank talks about one of his favorite MEMORIES with Franny’s mom: Debbie, but “oh no, maybe that was Fiona”. Small moment, typical Frank but... nonetheless, poor memory. The writers are smart by mentioning Fiona in this scene... it’s “a Fiona mention”, we’re going to remember this, and that’s probably why they did it.
8. The Paper Store
Yeah, this was the first red flag for me and if I can recall, the moment EVERYONE knew something seemed off. Frank, walks out of the paper store with Franny and cannot remember where he is, or where they are headed. Once he is reminded of their “goals” for the day (by Franny, a five year old) he proceeds to head to the paper store... Franny once again let’s him know that they already went there and Frank notices the paper already in his (Franny’s) backpack. Ouch.
11x04
9. The Nation of Islam
Ooo this one hurt! After Frank suggests to visit The Nation of Islam in an attempt to get their help to get rid of the Milkoviches, him, Kev, and Liam do. We SEE them go there. It’s a whole scene, so later in the episode when Frank suggests to go ask them for help AGAIN as if it were a completely new idea, we as an audience know they already did that. As Kevin says they “JUST did that”. Frank forgot. Shit.
11x05
10. Mrs.McCurdy
Frank discusses with Kev about murdering Mrs.McCurdy, later he tries to murder her. We see it, we remember it becaue she grabbed Frank’s dick. It was funny, the scene evoked laughter, it forces the audience to remember it. Frank mindlessly walks into The Alibi and Kev asks Frank if he “did the thing”. Now at first Frank is confused. They were using “quotation talk” earlier so yeah I get it, but then when Kevin is more direct with Frank, Frank thinks Kev is implying that he had sex with Mrs.McCurdy... Frank is clearly confused. Only then does Kev point out that he meant MURDER. Frank takes a second, again if you watch he does not know what Kev is talking about, but then it hits him, and he remembers. Thus continuing the convo like nothing.
11x06
11. Monica
Now this one REALLY hurt. Frank’s first scene of the episode is a sex scene between him and Letty. She’s blonde, and Frank calls her Monica. He truly believes he is sleeping with Monica, only Monica is dead, she been since season seven. When Letty mentions that she isn’t Monica (thinking Frank calling her that was only a sex thing), we see WHM’s brilliant preformence once again. Frank doesn’t know what Letty means, he thinks she’s Monica. Then when he realizes she isn’t, he gets this lost dejected look on his face. He’s confused and knows that he keeps getting confused.
Frank says “I gotta get to work”. Letty asks him where he works and Frank is left bewildered.
12. Seven
Okay so remember Frank and Franny’s adventure in 11x03? Frank visits a dry cleaners to get some weed. They make a point of Franny saying that Frank will pay SEVEN for the weed. No offer is made and Frank must get it somewhere else. Throughout the episode Frank refterences SEVEN to Kev & V as the asking price to sell. We as an audience are forced to remember SEVEN. Also in 11x03, as Debbie frantically looks for Frank/Franny, she visits the dry cleaners where they were (retracing their steps). We as an audience have been there twice.
Now, in 11x06 Frank goes to pick up an order but like, we already saw him go there episodes ago. When the woman behind the counter literally tells him she has nothing for him and he argues with her, WE KNOW she is right. Once again, Frank forgot. I’m so sad. Not only that but Kev and V don’t have Frank going on runs anymore. Ian & Mickey are doing it... Frank is legit lost and forgot that he’s not doing that anymore, Kev tells him he’s not in 11x04.
Ms.G even says to Frank that she doesn’t need to write anything down to remember it because the “Mind’s a steel trap”. She doesn’t owe him... she can use her mind to remember where Frank cannot. The irony.
13. Pedestrian, Blue, Handlebar (abc)
a) Frank getting hit in the head results in him having a visit to the hospital where a nurse discovers that Frank has no clue how he got there and more specifically, how he got hit in the first place.
b) The saddest part, when asked his name he remembers FRANK. But has to look down at her sheet to know his last name is GALLAGHER. This is the man who walks around saying “It’s up to Frank Gallagher to save the neighborhood”. He forgot his last name.
c) The scene goes on, the nurse asks him to remember three words: pedestrian, blue, and handlebar. They discuss other things, then she asks him to tell her those words. It’s so abundantly clear that Frank just cannot. He doesn’t remember. He was told like 30sec ago and gets, for the first time ASHAMED. He’s the most shameless person ever (hence the title of the show) but now the tides have turned. He “doesn’t wanna play this game anymore”. Frank can recognize AGAIN that he is confused, only now he is forced to face it. The nurse noticed, she runs some tests and Frank learns that he has early stages of alcoholic dementia. This isn’t his liver, he can’t get a new one, this is his brain.
14. + 15. Letty & Terry
Just two bonuses, Frank wanders aimlessly into the Alibi again (like in 11x05) because it’s routine for him. Letty calls him over. Frank forgot they were supposed to meet there. :(
Frank and Terry on the porch: Maybe it’s just bad writing or they were trying to make a point but like a “Gallagher-Milkovich War” never happened??? We watched the show for 11 seasons... Also are the Milkoviches actually from Poland Frank? I’ll excuse that one cuz Ian mentioned it too, but I thought they wer Ukrainian. These seem like writing mistakes tho so oops.
Things He Might Be Able To Remember
Frank has his and Franny’s name tattooed on his body... he literally forgot his last name at the hospital. And if he forgets a bunch in 11b then that’ll be the payoff for the tattoo... he might not know why the tattoo is there or who the people are listed on his arm, or even what it means exactly, but he will know that Frank loves Franny.
Where he lives. Frank never threw out the paper with his diagnosis. He might remember his home, however the conflict comes in the fact that the Gallaghers might be selling it. He needs to be around people/places that are familiar to him. This could jeopardize his memory.
The Alibi is where Frank seems to just walk to or go to whenever he has no clue where he is or going but it’s subtle. I could see him getting lost and no one knowing where he is and Frank just being at the Alibi beacuse idk muscle memory? He’s on autopilot.
Early stages of ALCOHOLIC Dementia can improve. Like if maybe Frank were to tell someone and if he wasn’t removed from the Gallagher house, and oh I don’t know if Frank STOPPED DRINKING, he could remember. But I don’t think we’re heading in that direction, especially if the house is sold, and let’s face it... it looks that way.
Fiona? Will he forget her... this all feels reminiscent of 4x11.
Other Characters Finding Out
Franny, Kevin, and Liam, are the only people who have REALLY been subject to the possibility of noticing... but think about it. Franny is too young to notice anything, Kevin is not the brightest bulb, he doesn’t seem to realize it either, and Liam was exposed to it once, but at that time he was so scared about the Milkoviches that he didn’t notice it. Maybe if he saw it again, he would. Liam is smart enough.
I wonder if the Gallaghers will just find out the hard way (,like those stills from 11x08 are making me think,) or if anyone will begin to seriously pick up on it. I intially thought they would show Frank forgetting in front of each character until someone was able to notice but scratch that. They seem to be setting Lip up on the “alcoholic path” this season, (and I may go more into depth about that one another time, it’s another big post if I do get into it). But what will the Gallagher’s reactions/feelings be towards Frank’s diagnosis? Mickey and Ian had many Terry/Frank discussions in 11x06 literally setting up for it. It hurt when they all kept dismissing Frank because yup, they don’t know yet. They would have to help him in order to keep his memory maintained, but that’s the thing... Frank’s pride. He might deny their help even if they actually were to give it to him... Either way, I’m “looking forward” to see how this all unravels and how everyone finds out and what their reactions will be, which brings me to my final topic:
Aftermath...
So what happens? Will they sell the house, potentially causing Frank to forget? Will he not know his kids, his history? Will he die? Will Frank finally stop drinking... yeah I doubt that... So what WILL happen? Will the Gallaghers be left to take care of Frank? Will they even do that? Will he remember them?
What if in 1x01 Frank’s narration IS his memory? We see him talking about his kids to someone? It circles back? I don’t know, but either way I expect this whole thing to pull on our heartstrings. When the rest of the regulars find out... it’s gonna get real, and rough.
Interesting stuff coming up in 11b I’m sure. Let’s see how this plays out for our Protagonist and Patriarch: Frank Gallagher.
Omg, if you read through this, you are so cool and I really really appreciate you! Please send me an ask or write a note, I would love to get your take on the matter. 💙
Hope you enjoyed this analysis and I hope it didn’t go on too long.

do u think mickey and mandy were closer when they were kids?
yes, but i think that being milkoviches “close” has a different definition.
i feel like the mickey and mandy we see in the first 4 seasons are already pretty close. again, they show affection in a way different to most, so it’s hard to really explain their bond. i feel like the fact that mickey willingly hugged her tight for a few seconds in front of ian and multiple other guys in 2x02 proves they’re close and love each other (not to mention how he is towards ian in the first season before mandy calls her brothers off, he cares so much about his sister).
that being said, as kids they definitely had a much closer bond. they were closer to each other than any of the other milkovich siblings (or cousins who may as well be siblings). i think we’re led to believe that colin and iggy are a bit older, like i’ve always thought colin was maybe 5 years older than mickey and iggy was 4 years older? maybe a little more or a little less? but because of this, mickey and mandy were the closest because they were so close in age. his older brothers would pick on him, so he would resort to mandy, who may tease him but wouldn’t be like colin and iggy.
@holymurdock has this fic about mandy’s relationship with aunt rande (who we meet in season’s 2&3) and the fic is honestly my favorite thing ever… but there’s a part where mickey and mandy are together over at aunt rande’s house, and i feel like it was an accurate representation of what they would be like as kids. they’re both the youngest and victims, and they have an understanding of that. mickey was (is) definitely protective of his little sister, because if he can’t protect her against terry he can at least protect her against others, and i think mandy would admire that in him because even if he is still mickey, out of all men she’s met (up until ian) he shows the most kindness to her.
^ i mean, we know that at his core mickey is soft, but he’s had to hide that away for so many years. the thing about their closeness is that mandy would’ve been able to see through that façade. like, i know mandy didn’t actually figure out mickey was gay until ian’s drunken confession in 3x11, but just because she couldn’t tell he was gay doesn’t mean she didn’t know he was hiding. i’m sure that colin and iggy are hiding in their own ways, too, but mandy was too little to ever see how they truly acted, and i don’t know if i really think either of them have as much depth as mickey and mandy do. mandy has always known mickey, she knew him when he was small and more… human, she knows that he isn’t necessarily the trash-talking, king of the southside, fuck-u-up, tough guy he always acts like he is. she knew him before all of that, but maybe as that started to develop, they faded apart a bit.
if anyone else has any thoughts on these two i’d love to hear them because they’re one of my favorite sibling duos in shameless<3

10 Statements I have about shameless: S11 edition
(cause i am a gemini who likes to ramble.)
1/?
1. Terry's Death.
The way Terry died is.. so instresting to me. We were introduced to him as this kick-ass, redneck, rightist, who killed/tortured people without a care, only for us to see him in his final moments as a shitty old man with a bag over his head.
Like he didn't die from a hit, or an old colleague deciding he was tired of his games. Terry was taken out by a nun who I presume does mercy killings (???). I think the way the writers handled it was incredibly ironic and emotionally wrecking in a span of about 45 seconds.
2. Terry's Paralyzed.
His paralyzation, I like how they had Liam be the reason he was paralyzed, it was very nice to see the child he terrorized be the reason for his demise. a young black boy at that.
3. Frank's Dementia
I had a feeling that this season we'd finally see Frank diagnosed with SOMETHING, he was drinking for decades and was still kicking somehow. So it's, bittersweet to see Shameless remembering that Frank is human and he can't drink damn near everyday for decades and not have some condition (besides that liver thing.)
4. Terry's one of my faves (HEAR ME OUT.)
Now as an lgbtq+, poc, lefist, I have a hatred for his.. or what was his existence. Terry is one of my faves cause the writers wrote him so damn well, they were able to have us consistently hate him from the moment he said something to even right now, while he is dead.
I like the ability his actor had to truly portray the absolutely filith, hatred, evil, and nastiness found in Terry Milkovich.
5. Sandy and Debby's fight(s.)
I can't get over how.. uncomfortably realistic that fight felt. The way they had Sandy back Debbie onto Franny's bed, who during that episode she was an.. awful mother too (I hope that was their way of saying she felt small.) was.. idk, in a way, bittersweet cause we weren't feeling debby as much anymore, but we also still slightly remembered her as the bright eyed little girl excited to help her family.
It was like.. maybe what sandy was saying is.. semi-right? let's add in frank for this one:
• She never really.. had her mom in her life, she was there periodically but never there, usually long enough for debbie to get semi-attached to, but never long enough for debbie to be able to casually say, "yeah my mom is always here.", so, in my mind, while she had fiona as a stand in mom, she never had her mom.. who was there and periodically coming back, there to really teach her the ropes of motherhood, never there to prepare her for birth, never there for her first period, never there to talk to her about sex and protection. so.. debbie never really got that mother daughter relationship, she got a taste but everytime she did, it was gone, and now she'll never get it.
•and Frank, fuckin frank, jesus christ. what can i say? not caring about her underage drinking, smoking, her worrisome obsession at getting pregnant at 15??(girls now but yk.)- that's all I can get into cause.. you can't even get into the intricacies of Frank Gallagher on text ALONE.
I feel like Sandy was on point with what she was trying to say but.. at what cost?
6. Ian and Mickey babies <3
I want them to be fathers so bad <3
lowkey feel like there would be a moment where Mickey is like 'here ya go, daddy.' to Ian with the baby(s) and then later he'd be like.. 'you know, you calling me daddy was.. kinda hot mick.' but yk.
7. Tami Tamietti
I gotta say, when I first saw Tami, I did NOT like her. I mean i was searching on reddit trying to see if we all mutually agreed that Tami needed to gtfo, but as the series progressed, I honestly.. really like her? but worst fucking name ever, Tami Tamietti?? The writers didn't give a single shit.
8. Ian and Mandy's friendship.
I love their friendship, it started off rocky and kinda rapey on mandy's end but it was cute! They had each others backs, they complimented each other perfectly, and It was honestly so sweet. The smart ass Gallaghers and The mean ass milkovich children produce a sweet friendship between one of each.
bonus points for the gallavich.
9. Fiona was selfish?
Everyone says that they didn't like fiona at some point anymore cause she was selfish, but honestly? she had a right to be selfish. A drunk for a father coming and and taking whatever he wants whenever he pleases and the only thing he gives back is misfortune, A mother who comes and goes as she pleases (also traumatizing them with that thanksgiving incident) who suddenly drops dead IN the house.
Then a bunch of siblings who would act rude and ungrateful as hell towards her, (not my boy liam.) then come crawling back the second they need help. Yeah, Fiona deserved to be selfish, she deserved to splurge on herself, she deserved her right to make a mistake, she deserved her right to exist.
I believe that while Fiona was selfish at times, Fiona was the opposite overall. Fiona was self-less, spending what? 20 god damn years? She started taking care of lip and ian like a parent at nine years old, so for about TWENTY years, Fiona dedicated her life, her time, and her basically her existence to her siblings.
She has every right in the book to be selfish.
10. Shameless.
I began watching in late august, early september and honestly? I love the show. I learned from it, can you believe it? I learned from a show with ghetto white people. I'm gonna miss it, I'll rewatch it again, and again. I'll read the fanfics. I love the show. It's my comfort show. Even in it's dark, shitty, controversial moments, I truly love this show.
10/10 I recommend it.
----
btw, if they kill off frank and make the gallavich couple both orphans?? i'm stabbing someone.

Rewatching season 5 and when jimmy comes back in 5x5 he overhears Fiona on the phone with Mickey and says “oh Mickey milkovich? How’s he doing?” (Or something like that). Would Jimmy have known about Mickey and Ian prior to Ian leaving and/or jimmy disappearing?
thank you for the ask! and especially, thank you for the jimmy ask. i had really liked him, and then i tried to keep liking him for far too long. it was actually in the beginning of 5x06 when mickey calls fiona and jimmy asks about him. but anyways, by mid season 5 jimmy would have most definitely been familiar with mickey. he had spent a fair share of time in the neighborhood and the milkovich’s are pretty well known around the southside. jimmy technically first met mickey way back in 1x03 when mickey was looking for ian out front at the gallagher house. and jimmy had known when lip was seeing mandy and he was there when mandy suggested they pay mickey to intimidate cousin patrick in season 3. this just made me think how ridiculous it is that mickey robbed jimmy’s house (well, his parent’s house at least) and it was jimmy’s dad that took care of mickey’s shot up butt in the gallagher kitchen. it’s safe to say jimmy was familiar enough with who mickey was by his short return in season 5, but as to when exactly jimmy found out about ian and mickey being together? i’m not really sure and i don’t know if jimmy would have known about them before the end of season 3. it may be possible that while jimmy was back in the southside and stalking fiona for however long in season 4 and through the beginning of season 5 that he could have found out then? sorry, i know that’s not the best answer for you, if anyone wants to add on to this, please do.

sandy
headcanon and fill in the gaps for sandy is tricky. they were not this close "month" ago, so I doubt they hanged out much in the past . I doubt they saw each other much too. but, maybe, when she moved in to do jobs in mickeys house, they send her to deliver him some job offers (kinda like svetlana did in season 6), so they talked a bit, and mickey knew she's there, living maybe even in his old room, so when he got out of prison, he naturally just called home and asked her to bring his stuff. after that, even though she grossed him out for a moment, they met to do that gun thing at the house, maybe drived together to deliver them, and both didnt hate it, cause she minded her distance this time and wasn't annoying, and maybe they had the similar music taste or something, and discovered it while driving. Or the opposite and argued about it a whole ride, but in entertaining way. so when mickey and ian broke up, he bitched to her a bit, a few times, and then with the wedding stuff she genuinely showed an interest, and was fun to be around, so mickey got her involved even more, cause he could use some emotional support from someone who isn't ian for once. and he can use a friend even if it's a relative of some sorts (I mean Ian's bff always was lip,.so. *spidermen looking at each other react pic insert)
1. I cant imagine her interacting with mandy, mandy wouldn't like her at all, sandy probs would go through her stuff.
2. Ian doesnt like her, she doesn't take him seriously, he doesnt take her seriously too. she would probably go through Ian's stuff as well.
3. even season 2 mandy would not interact with mickey this way, so I wouldn't call sandy a placeholder for her, even though it was what I originally thought.
4. no one minds her orientation cause terry only has problem with his own children and other milkoviches never gave mickey shit either. as long as they act "southside": at least.

Reactions: 11x06: Do Not Go Gently... (etc)
You know, I was going to do one of these for 11x05 and then I got so mad about the “Pollack” thing that I just couldn’t.
Shameless is such a challenging show in so many ways... because there is a lot of cringe a lot of the time and I am a delicate flower about those things. But... I do love it and so much of its strengths at this point are the performers and just the length of time we have been with these characters. And sometimes you really see that, and sometimes you frustratingly don’t, but this episode was much more the former than the latter.
I’m going talk about Carl right off the jump when I thought I was going to avoid talking about it at all because... not a topic I enjoy. If you don’t enjoy, I will keep it all in this bullet so it’s really skipable. I will see where I eventually land on it, because I am wary -- lots of bad consent on this show over the year and very little longterm exploration and all. But. I have seen a lot of sexual assault storylines over the years. I can’t readily remember if I’ve ever seen someone on a TV show have that moment where they feels weird, tell someone why, and get someone emphatically tell them that they’re right to feel weird, because they’ve been violated. That is something that is so common in life. I have unfortunately had more than one conversation with someone that took exactly that trajectory. There is so often this period of shock and uncertainty and people will then use that against people to demonstrate how they couldn’t POSSIBLY have been hurt. If they were going to tell a story about a sexual assault, I’m glad they did this -- something that they set up like “this is grey!” and then have Debbie say “It’s not grey. It’s a crime.” Weird to them basically SMASHCUT to a totally new topic but I will swing back around to that.
I like Debbie best with Sandy so this was a rough one for me with her.
Frank: WTF, why do I care about Frank’s story? They’ve set this up all season so it’s not a surprise, but... I dunno. Frank is awful. But he’s also an addict. And the thing I will always have empathy for on the topic of addiction is the way it can steal your life. What’s happening to Frank is scary and a direct result of an addiction which we have pretty much never seen him try to get out from under in any meaningful way. He has lost his life to it -- his potential, his relationships, his children -- and now he’s losing his mind. Just. Fuck.
Speaking of: Lip. WTF are you doing? I feel like, by the end of the episode, they’d made it clear that Lip is acting out. That he’s angry and frustrated and it’s making him do stupid and destructive things that aren’t actually going to add up to ANYTHING good for him. Which... Kinda classic of Lip. But those moments where Mickey is looking at him and is the voice of reason ... I mean, I love that. But Lip. That’s not a great look for you.
Once again, V’s story just sorta weird? Like active shooter drills being a replacement for gym class... Um.  Wait. What is this story about, exactly? Gun violence or school funding? Or both? What are we doing?
Liam: Stop going to Carl with your problems. Christian: I love what you’re doing. Because boy do I feel Liam’s terror. And I’ll come back to that, too.
Gallavich! It was a Gallavich story where the focus was on MICKEY. Just... Wow. I literally didn’t think that was going to be a thing this year. We love to see it.
Mickey helping Lip rob Born Free... There are a lot of blanks in all of that, but he seemed quite integral to the operation, Ian clearly knew it was going down and Mickey seems to have primarily seen it as a way to do a thing for family. I love the Lip and Mickey relationship -- I love the history of it. I love that they’ve known each other since grade school and are completely different kinds of alphas. Lip has always had being the smartest in his back pocket, but Mickey often leaves him speechless by just being the most fearless. I love how there’s always been a bit of begrudging respect (and on Lip’s side, maybe a bit of sympathy) there and I love that the show let us have a moment where Mickey is going out to help Lip do crime and then coming back to the house with donuts for everybody. Just. Beyond my wildest dreams for season 11.
Speaking of “beyond my wildest dreams” -- that there would be some decent level of complexity with Mickey and Terry. I think a lot of that complexity was left up to Noel to convey -- but that’s a choice they’re making and I think it’s the right one. I loved Ian observing that this was the most Mickey ever talked about Terry, because that seems true. It’s a little nod, too, to when Ian desperately WANTED Mickey to talk about Terry and the fact that Ian has, for years, accepted that Mickey won’t. It’s in character for Mickey not to want to SAY a lot about his dad, and it’s also just a true fact that the writers can give Noel a non-verbal moment (or five) and get us as the audience what we need to understand about where Mickey is at. And that’s history, too. Because we have watched Noel let the audience see Mickey’s heart through nothing but his facial expression for 10 of 11 seasons.
One of those Milkoviches looks a lot like Jody, so that was weird.
So one of my less popular Shameless opinions is that it makes sense that Mickey is involved with Terry in season 10. For many reasons I won’t get into here, but one of them is just that... people who have been abused by their parents do tend to have some kind of relationship with those parents. Most of that is just the fact that Terry -- while being absolutely horrific -- is still Mickey’s father. And Mickey clearly struggles to completely shrug that off. He struggles with it in seasons 3 and 4, and he struggles with it now. He understands that he has every right. But. Mickey isn’t Terry. And that’s going to make it harder for Mickey to completely shut that door. Since Mickey actually DOES have empathy.
Ok -- everyone has and will say what I’m about to say, which is just: The scene on the couch was amazing. Being take care of is such a loaded issue for Ian. It was loaded enough that it broke them up in season 10. Ian might talk about being paralyzed, but he’s saying that knowing that he will have to rely on Mickey to take care of him sometimes. He knows Mickey knows that and he knows Mickey signed up for it. But it’s hard for him. I think Ian knows the answer to the question -- has to -- but he asks it to ground Mickey in the idea that they both have each other. Mickey isn’t going to end up like Terry. He isn’t going to be alone in his chair with every single member of his family satisfied to leave him on the curb in a hospital gown.
To take a step back, this is also why I love the prior scene on the sidewalk, because that is a lot of how Ian takes care of Mickey. I reblogged Gallavictorious’s post yesterday that talked about an accusation that the fandom promotes the idea Mickey is supposed to solve Ian’s problems. This is the show helping her rebuttal, because my gut response to that idea was “where is Mickey now if Ian hadn’t shown up and loved him the way he did?” -- and that moment on the sidewalk is an example of how that still impacts Mickey. That’s what Mickey sticks around for. To have someone standing right in front of him when he wants to do something that will blow his life up just saying “Don’t.” Like how powerful is it for Mickey to have someone care like that? Mickey doesn’t want to talk. That’s not how he wants to receive love from Ian. But I think it’s incredibly valuable and important that Mickey has someone telling him he doesn’t need to give up his life to punish his father. That Terry isn’t worth it and that Mickey’s life IS.
Back on the couch scene tip: How exhausted must Mickey BE at this point? He’s up all night helping Lip, then he’s driving with Ian all day. Just what a long 24 hours for this guy.
I love that Ian doesn’t chase Mickey when he gets up. That he follows, but he doesn’t seem alarmed. He seems to understand they are past the gun-to-the-forehead part of this experience.
I also love that Ian helps him. I’ve seen several people note that this is Ian observing Mickey’s boundaries and it is. But it’s also Ian pointing out that Mickey isn’t in this alone.
It WAS big of Mickey, Ian. I fully agree. Far beyond the call.
I think Ian’s been wanting to tell Mickey he’s better than that all day. But this was the moment where Mickey was most going to be able to hear it. 💕
Selling the house: Well, we are really getting to the “last season of Shameless” stuff. I get where Lip is coming from, when he looks at his options. I get Debbie’s reaction. I also understand, given Ian’s day, while he is IMMEDIATELY all in. I only have one question: WHAT ABOUT LIAM???? I’m already mad at all of you for not giving that kid a hug.
But. I mean, overall? Literally wanted to see that much Terry/Mickey stuff for years. I never thought it would get here, so I’m happy.
But oh my God. We’re halfway done. 😳

Who wants a controversial Opinion?
Okay I guess you do, hi there.
I don’t really like Gallavich. Yes I said it, I don’t like Mickey and Ian together. NO stop! put down the hate mail, let me finish.
So I really like Mickey and Ian early on, that stuff of any port in a storm, the mad desperation of finally finding another gay person when you’re young and lonely and closeted, all of that rings really true and is powerful. Now my dad also has watched Shameless and he’s really death on Gallavich, his point being that a kid like Mickey would/could never come out at all, so his point of view is that Mickey’s story should have ended when Terry catches Ian and Mickey in the act and beats the shit out of them and forces Mickey to fuck Svetlana (or maybe at his wedding to Svetlana). And I get his point and being reasonable he may well be right.
I’m not nearly as down on them as all that, particularly since Mickey’s coming out and the violent all out fight with Terry is some of the best TV ever and Mickey just screaming covered in blood that he takes it in the ass and loves it is amazing and liberating.
But then what are we doing? The whole relationship is about the tension that Mickey can’t come out, won’t come out and it being unclear at least at first that Mickey has real feelings or that he can even admit them at all. When Mickey comes out..... and nothing changes what do we have?
change is good, basically I felt like there were two paths Gallavich could have taken out of Mickey coming out.
A) move out of the neighborhood and into the gayborhood. I thought two of the most interesting and best character moments for Mickey (ever) were in Season 4 when Ian goes in to kiss Mickey at the gay bar and Mickey instinctively pulls away alarmed at being outed in a public place and he and Ian have a whole conversation without words and you see for the first time Mickey realizes he does want to be a part of this world, this gay world where everyone is just like him and no one judges him and they make out in a room full of people. The second good one is Mickey waking up after the party at a gay dude’s house next to Ian and has his first real conversation (brief) with a gay person who isn’t Ian and you see him value being able to wake up with Ian, but also having people in his life who can see their love as beautiful and right.
Any ways build on that, own that for the first 4 seasons you made the neighborhood violent and homophobic. So get Ian and Mickey out of there and in Boystown (yes thats what the gay neighborhood of Chicago is called). Both Ian and Mickey have to navigate a new world, deal with internalized homophobia, I mean it’s season 10 now and Mickey is still saying WILDLY homophobic shit, it’s not cute guys. Deal with “am I really gay *enough*?” or the right kind of gay and face down the question “am I only with you because you were the only choice?” and we can see Mickey be a fish out of water trying to do jobs in gay world (coffee shop boy, bartender at a gay bar, maybe go-go dancer and jealous that Ian makes more)
The other thing you could have done is B) Ian and Mickey take on the world. Again for the first 4 seasons we have a very homophobic world, also the Milkovichs are shown as violent criminals and murderers (it’s strongly implied a number of times that Mickey has killed people). So rather than have Mickey embrace a gay world (as Ian had in season 4) have Ian embrace a criminal one. Terry is safely in jail so his crime world is up for grabs but people aren’t willing to have Mickey take over because he’s gay, maybe some people try to beat him straight or something. Ian brings some of the Gallagher ingenuity to the Milkovich game soon their running things in the neighborhood but the question is how deep in will Mickey drag Ian and can any amount of force and fear really be enough to keep two gay guys on top of South Side crime?
But instead they didn’t really do anything, Ian remains driven by duty and doing good and also is pretty open about himself, Mickey remains a petty criminal low life with major homophobia issues, the most interesting thing is the running joke about Ian’s big dick and Mickey being the bottom (oh ha ha ha so funny) Both of Ian’s replacement boyfriends, Caleb (season 7) and Trevor (season 8) made more sense, given that both tapped into that service/helping people side of Ian and Trevor really was a lost opportunity to represent a gay trans relationship on TV but we ditched him without a trace to just re-do the Mickey and Ian show, again.
Like I said I thought their early seasons were very strong, but we refused to evolve, change, grow, it’s tired.
