Like I don't Post about drama but vis a vis predestro's Tumblr ban, like. I don't necessarily think it's a good thing that we on the Internet have become so desensitized to threats of violence that we use them as jokes, but like.... That's been Tumblr culture for, what, a decade now? At least four years. Almost definitely longer.
And like. I've seen so much worse. Folks admitting to sending asks telling others to kill themselves!! Folks outright wishing x/y person killed themselves!!! Folks harassing trans folks (esp. trans women!)
But what gets this one lady banned was her man door hammer hand car boom-ass post???
Like, talk about enforcing the TOS from the wrong angle.
I totally get that part of it is "this person had their rule breaking reported en masse so something happened" but shouldn't the severity of the response have more to do with the severity of the offense, rather than how many people reported that user?
Like. The fact that we have to do mass reports to get anything to happen to anyone is ridiculous.
And, the fact that INCORRECT mass reports aren't punished more is also ridiculous.
There's also no report function for discriminatory content, or for seeing users harass each other. So... If you're not the one being harassed, your report does... Nothing??
Unless you, what scroll through someone's blog looking for things you could report as threatening violence??
On the "I hope every politician dies" webbed site???
There's obviously something fucky with their reporting system- either the way that reports are handled, or the way the severity of the reports are being judged.
Cause right now, it looks like they got a flood of reports from TERFs, photomatt saw a post about him, and went "well, fuck it, get her out of here" without looking at the context of HER BEING HARASSED FOR AGES. And that the post in question- the only one I saw shared!- was almost certainly a vent post for Said Situation that was...
Comically mishandled?
Like this one?
Like. Look. Do I think maybe at some point, on the "way too comfortable with violence on people I see as Wrong in some way" webbed site, a popular user said something that could actually be construed as a threat, and due to rampant transmisogyny got, got her shit reported?
Yeah, I can see that.
I don't follow her blog too closely, I know she does a lot of hyperbolic stuff. (as is Done on this Web site, again... I've almost certainly rb'd things just as bad)
But the example photomatt uses is hilariously bad and so obviously not a threat, and one would think, IN LIGHT OF THERE BEING ALLEGATIONS OF TRANSPHOBIA ON THEIR TEAM FOR YEARS, THEY WOULD BRING OUT A MORE CREDIBLE PIECE OF EVIDENCE THAN A LOONY-TOONS ASS DEATH WISH.
Just. The bar was on the ground and they still fumbled It! Fucking! Amazing!

Pretty boring take on the whole deal between Izzy, Spanish Jackie, and Badminton to me is when people kind of imply it was an above board arrest of pirates on the Navy side.
Like - ok, first, I do have completely genuine and serious thoughts about the whole thing I alluded to here where Chauncey is acting as a person who wants revenge and not an agent of the empire and that accidentally screws him over on a narrative level (in a different way than being the empire would) by allowing everyone around to be people too. But beyond that...
This isn't a real arrest! It's a bunch of dirty cops doing an off the record meeting with mobsters in a warehouse! There's lots of fandom discussion on Izzy's deal with the devil but Chauncey did the same thing! Not much of a bitter deal for him if the extent of his sacrifice was having to enter Jackie's bar.
No, Chauncey is not operating with the full control of the situation and enforced power of the British Empire, and you can tell.
I mean, The Plan - prior to Edward and the Act of Grace - was for Chauncey to sail over, make a big show of arresting and interrogating all these pirates to confirm what he already knew (that Stede killed his brother), hold a sham trial to tell Stede dramatically that he was going to die, kill Stede, and then leave all the other pirates and the ship with Izzy, Ivan, and Fang entirely free to go about their business. (Like, they do this. No one on Stede's crew is even bound during the episode and none of them need an Act of Grace.) Izzy can be dumb sometimes, but it would be entirely new monumental levels of stupid to have no guarantees that this was going to happen beyond an Admiral's pinky promise, and even stupider on Chauncey's part not to immediately renege on this deal and arrest / kill every pirate on the ship. Unless he couldn't. And it becomes really fucking obvious that he couldn't once Edward gets caught too.
(If I'm going to speculate, that's probably what Spanish Jackie is bringing to this deal. She's negotiated with the Spanish Navy before. Presumably she has a way to ensure the Brits don't do something like just arrest everyone as soon as they have Stede - just like how Geraldo can safely head home from the Spanish ship despite apparently being an infamous gang member.)
Chauncey literally has Blackbeard in custody happily admitting to death penalty crimes and he's just announcing mid "trial" that Edward will be heading out with his First Mate on Stede's ship without any sort of punishment or supervision? And no one questions this at all? Yeah, no fucking way are the actual events of this day in any way official, nor do I buy that Chauncey did not already have his hands tied in some way making him just let Edward go. The "legal record" stuff is all just pageantry / falsifying evidence for the story later and everyone's in on it. Also why Stede's Act of Grace doesn't mean shit unless Edward signs too. This isn't a real arrest that Stede's legalese-ing his way out of. It's just Edward making a better offer (+ required narrative spin) to the other British officers than Jackie and Izzy did.
Somehow - and this is a comedy so we're going to waive the actual how - the only person whose fate was up in the air was Stede. Which works really well in terms of all the antagonists getting together to make an "enemy of my enemy" deal, and for Chauncey getting blinded and eventually screwed over by his quest for vengeance. If he'd done things officially, as a pirate hunter going after a pirate, then he wouldn't have had Edward and Stede's crew just hanging around in the peanut gallery to screw him over. Probably wouldn't have been doing this in an isolated spot in the middle of nowhere at all. But he made a deal instead, and sacrificed control of the situation for it.
Which is why I find it kind of lame and boring to read the situation like Chauncey did have the power to just do whatever he wanted, and instead simply chose to let everyone go and not screw over Izzy for giggles or weird antagonist solidarity. As if he had the opportunity to put "guy who executed fucking Blackbeard" on his list of accomplishments but wasn't feeling it that day, so might as well just release him.
This definitely throws a wrench in blaming Izzy for all the hypothetical stuff that could have gone wrong in a real arrest (and for stuff that didn't happen like "selling" Edward - a British citizen who can't just be sold to some guy by the Navy even if he was actually in custody), but it actually makes sense as a deal all these people would make instead of Izzy, Ivan, and Fang just strolling onto a ship with fingers crossed that arresting bonus pirates is not a priority today.

sorry was going to sleep and my brain BLASTED me with the memory that ppl tried to defend giving money to jkr by going “what about lovecraft!” when like. they clearly don’t know anything about how lovecrafts work is actually Handled nor have they actually Read any of it (which I fucking have it’s not hard you can find it easily and his works pretty short). like. hp lovecrafts work is racist as fuuuuuck. the influence of the racism from people taking from him a bit too much is still absolutely an issue in similar works and is like. Talked About. bc like lovecrafts primary Thing in horror is influence at this point like everyone agrees he was a shitty person and that his work while actually rad as shit in some ways is also bigoted to hell and back in others to the point it’s ridiculously distracting. people are reading them with the Context he’s a racist dick and also dead if I saw someone seriously arguing lovecraft was just supporting whites or whatever the correct response would be to kick them in the jaw. want jkr's books to be treated like that? wait until like a century after she’s died, and also like if they’re being viewed like lovecrafts works jkr would be considered a monster and her work bigoted and hateful by default in a way work inspired by it actively mocks like that’s what the comparison implies. like no one’s saying you can’t do that but again the reason lovecraft is treated like that is bc he’s dead as fuck if he was alive right now and pushing that ideology I would in fact condemn people giving him money too. because. that money would be funding hate. which it isn’t bc lovecraft fucking died. you wanna make that argument you better be prepared to kill jkr yourself

God I am so fucking tired of self-policing. I know I have to, even (especially) in my art, because the derived meanings can lead to real harm to me. If I’ve ever found myself in another country and no legal ties to here, I would explode with such vicious and uncensored pieces god you have no idea.

not to be rude but I kinda think now we’re getting too into it. like it’s the funny little gay hbo pirate show with the wacky characters and emotionally devastating plot beats! and there totally is symbolism and meta to be analysed but seeing as we only have one season, and everyone is starved for content, it’s kinda got to the point where people are reading too much into certain things. I’m not saying they’re crazy, but to build entire perceptions of characters and scenes on meta that is too watsonian or even has been debunked by the writers isn’t the way to go. while reading into the text is good, the text is also just there to be read.

If you rewrote Chicken Little, what kind of punishment (bonus points if it is a Cool And Unusual Punishment) would you give to Buck Cluck for his horrible and entitled behavior and for him being a generally crappy and neglectful father to his own son?
Buck gets left alone. Chicken leaves him as the aliens adopt him when he realizes they make far better parents than he ever did. Also he gets in legal trouble for tax fraud.
