I'm now into the 5th season of hxh. As soon as I finish this series I will actually make a proper post but in the meantime I want to shout into the void how I feel about some of these bastards. Yes I was too lazy to turn off subtitles before taking hulu screenshots. I've been cutting into my sleep hours to watch this since the past week since I keep having to work overtime so this might be incoherent and delirious idk. I'm not entirely sure I'm awake right now. This might be a dream. Anyway

Hisoka was the only character I was familiar with by name prior to watching and like. I always assumed the pervert schtick was like a one-time line/single scene that people just took and ran with it. I was incorrect

I know full well this man would most likely kill me but like. I think I'd be okay with it. I think it would be a good way to go and I would probably accept it. I'd thank him even. I'd ask him to step on me while he does it. Or maybe I'm right at the threshold where I'm so pathetic I'm genuinely not worth killing which I think I'd also be okay with as long as I can still get knocked to the ground and have him step on my neck. Please sir

Also a large portion of me watching this, up until this past week, has been while I'm at home bc I've been home a lot recently and I often have a parallel play thing going on with my mother where in the evenings I'll watch something or play games while she browses facebook or reads her Bible/Christian books and she'll like pay half-attention and make comments every few minutes on anything I watch. In true parent fashion she's managed to be there for like every scene of random naked shots or weird moaning and says nothing, but once just looked up, made a face of deep discomfort and went back to highlighting her Bible. I think about this a lot. I'm sorry mom

I'm very weak to comic relief men actually and I have a triple weakness to token perv characters and furthermore my ovaries were created as such that men who are incredibly intelligent while also being astoundingly dumb are my kryptonite so my boy, be he as he may, dare I admit, does things to me. I think if you pulled the typical tease line where you say something about having a problem and needing a doctor to inspect you or just flash him he might die on the spot and that is very endearing to me. I want to protect Killua but like does he need it really. Like the "oh poor baby I want to hold him and squeeze him and never let anything harm him" urge is there because of my blatant maternal complexes but at the same time I know full well he does not need protecting and would realistically be the one protecting anyone else but like the urge is still there. I don't care. I WILL find something to protect him from and I WILL do it

Also very tsun. I can sense it. I know I'm dumb and weak and I would get snarky comments about it but that's okay. I would let the middle school aged boy bully me. I'd be okay with that

I think Illumi looks kind of like an insect. However he also terrifies me a little bit but I don't think that would particularly bother him. I think I could tell him both that he terrifies me and that he looks like a bug and he would have an entirely neutral response. Would probably just ask what kind of bug but may be disappointed if I name a non-cool bug. I'd probably say a grasshopper. I don't know how he would feel about that

I think what would be infuriating to me most is it is difficult to get much of a reaction out of this dude. Like you can be a total nightmare to have as a captive and the most you'll get is a :/ response. In attitude at least, like he'd probably still snap my wrist if deemed appropriate but would do it with just a mildly exasperated face/voice. I would try so hard to get a strong reaction and would never get it and that infuriates me. What right do you have to infuriate me like this bug man. Stop staring at me with them big ol eyes

I think if this man were to be living a normal life and not running with criminals he would wear socks with sandals on a daily basis. Like those thick white halfway up the calves socks and tan buckled sandals worn exclusively by boomer middle aged dads. And it's not the only trait he would share with middle aged men either I think he would care deeply about the quality of his lawn and mispronounce foreign things in a way that is borderline creative for how wrong it is. I think he just is a middle aged boomer dad trapped in a younger man's body. Release this man into a Home Depot and he will immediately adapt to his natural habitat

I am terrified of this man because due to who I am as a person I immediately evaluate all male specimens on what I think sex with them would be like, and cannot imagine a scenario involving this man where I come out of it without actual internal damage. Like you know how people joke about "rearranging your guts/insides" well this would be that but like actually genuinely. I think intercourse with this tank of a man would automatically necessitate medical attention. However do not mistake my horror for hesitancy because organ rupture is a price I will willingly pay for the experience of a realistic simulation of what I imagine it feels like to be a sick gazelle that falls behind the rest of the herd only to start hearing suspenseful nature documentary music

I cannot look at this man without my blood pressure immediately rising. I have never been simultaneously so strongly attracted to yet have such a strong desire to strangle someone. I think the worst part of this is that he would somewhat let me attempt to strangle him but would find it endearing and would start going on an analysis of my personhood and I will be real with you all that would peak my fury and I would become violent. And blah blah "understanding myself" hey man can you maybe not mass murder and go on your journey of self discovery by doing drugs or taking a road trip or something like a normal person in their quarter life crisis. Is that so hard.

As my fingers type these words I can feel my heart rate increasing and I am filled with immense fury and arousal at the same time. Why are you attractive? What is wrong with me? I hate it and I hate myself for it. I have to unironically take a break from typing to take a deep breath. I have to move on because I'm getting heart palpitations

Shalnark seems underappreciated. I love him so much but he also terrifies me in a way none of the others do. Like sure being blatantly cruel or loud or huge like some of the others is one thing but he's too cheery. It scares me on a visceral level. Sir why are you smiling like that. I do not trust it. Or rather realistically I know I WOULD trust it if I met this man as a stranger because I'm very gullible and that would not end well for me. This boy would probably be like one of the absolute worst people to end up stuck with once you get into it but that is very well hidden from the surface and I do not like that. I know I'm naive as all hell and I would fall for the same tricks over and over and I just know that would be used against me

On the bright side though this does mean he would actually fit the classic, original yandere trope since originally yanderes are supposed to be super sweet and cheery externally, so there's that

I have a small orgasm every time my eyes are graced with Kurapika's visage. I think about Kurapika at minimum 127 times daily and if I fail to do this I will die instantly. i try to adhere to the adventist etiquettes since i attend the church (it might bear repeating that i do not consider myself a christian and mostly just attend the adventist church because i have a soft-spot for it as part of my 'growing up' and have a measure of loyalty/love to/for it), and one of those is to not wear jewelry -- so i don:t! i let my ears become unpierced, even, cause the shame of secretly taking my earrings out on saturdays was getting to me (as well: i:ve always been wary about breaks in 'integrity of self' and even-just having my ears pierced always made me feel like i were muddying the floors of a temple; granted: i got my ears pierced because of kurapika from hxh);

but also: just in general i don:t like accessorizing very much; i don:t really see the point in it, and much of the 'whim' i get to have 'nice things' (like dolls, or figurines, or pretty pictures) always amounts to realizing that now that i have it there is nothing to be done with it cept look at it and go "yep seen it; wish i spent my money on food instead"; reflects in my fashion; just wear the same few things every single day; non-flashy and comfortable; though -- i saw on tiktok this guy hungryformunchies (or something like that, i should know his name i really like him) wearing this amazing Venom (the comic character!) overprint shirt and it was the most i:d ever wanted a piece of clothing in ages -- it just reeked of everything that i once thought cool back when my mom would take me to comic/halloween stores as a kid and i:d look at those x-men cards that occasionally had the COOL 3d holographic versions and think it were something magic and pristine;

now mostly everything is equally uninteresting cept in rare sparks and doing extra things like putting on some jewelry i don:t care about makes me feel like i am doing something that ought be done solely to trick the spirit to think i am offering it more of my attention than i am; example: using some hypothetical God as example: would loudly praying in a public place be a better gesture to that invisible thing i:ve sworn myself to, or is it a gesture to the public that "yes, i am faithful!"; surely that invisible creator ought be fine with invisible promises that i carry out without gesture or glamour; surely-still (to both myself and the invisible) it might even feel more glamorous than any jewelry to carry-out those promises at the inconvenience of the Public without much thoroughfare, even if it makes me fanatical or strange or inconvenient; as another example: i like my scarring, but mostly i:m fairly content to keep that unseen. it:s the general philosophy i have about "making art for yourself" being bogus and always necessitates that externalizing the Idea or Prayer succeeds in nothing but offering that internal core to the outside insectile intelligences, and any reward from doing-so is the coaxing offered to encourage that behavior; insects: sneaky and crafty.

I like both women and men (though I’d like to avoid being pared with super young characters like gon/killua) and I myself am genderfluid. My personality type is ENFP and I’m ambivert! I’m a very kind caring person and I love kids and animals! I enjoy games a lot whether they be card games or board games or more sporty games like tennis and fencing! I love crafting and am an artist and I love all mediums including drawing, painting, sewing, and sculpting. I also love cooking and baking for people I love! Having loved ones enjoy my food makes me very happy as well as gifting art that I’ve made for them. One issue though is that I lack self confidence and am extremely insecure so I need someone who is willing to baby me at times. I’m plus sized which doesn’t help my insecurities, but I use things like fun alternative fashions and makeup to make me feel more comfortable in my own skin. I love to cuddle and am a very openly affectionate person. I listen to pretty much every kind of music from opera to metal and everything in between! I’m a very duel sided person as I love frilly cute pastel things like lolita fashion and stuffed animals but at the same time I love macabre things like taxidermy and horror media! She would like how affectionate and "clingy" you are. Would hold your hand or let you rest your head on her lap while she reads. Her favorite cuddling position is when y'all lay on yalls sides, facing each other. And you rest your head on her chest. She likes holding you!

Phinks is not talked about a tone! A bunch of people think he is mean but on hxh's page it says that phinks has a kind and loyal heart! And I believe that! And that's why I think he would be perfect for you!

Phinks would like the way you're always up for a challenge when trying something new. The way you want to learn and take on new things is one of the many reasons he was drawn to you.

Phinks definitely has a soft spot for animals. He has a soft spot in general. And even though he tries to hide it. Having this tough guy act always on. He always had a soft spot for you. He is the type to switch up like. "Yeah what's up dawg" to "Hi baby how was your day? :D" when talking to his friends compared to you.

When you give him your art work he definitely brings it to show the troop and brags about it.

And when you bake for him?!??? He's in love. Makes him melt. Like if you pack his lunch or something while he has a troop meeting he will once again show it to everyone and when they say that looks good and asks for some. He immediately gets defensive. Will literally fight anyone that gets near it.

The troop definitely likes you also. Especially your baking. Would always as phinks to ask you if you would make cookies for them or something.

Phinks would just absolutely love your body. Theirs no other way to say it! He looks like the type of guy to want a plus size partner.

My fabulous bae Hisoka and I just having a walk! I wanted to just play with clothes for us both, and I almost always make up outfits for myself, so I wanted to make an outfit of my own that I actually do have. So that was fun!! And Hisoka; I wanted to put him in an outfit that shouldn't work but somehow does. XD I think I did it?

Hi! I hope you don’t mind me asking (you seem to be getting a lot of hxh asks, so I’m sorry for pestering) but is Killua queer coded intentionally? It’s all subtext obviously, but he’s very fashionable, he sits with his legs crossed sometimes, he dislikes women and girls except his sister who’s ostensibly trans, and don’t get me started on how he interacts with Gon! I don’t know how Togashi feels about the lgbt community, but with all the classic tropes in Killua’s character it feels like it has to be at least SOMEWHAT deliberate.

Hi anon!! Thank you for sending the ask, I don't actually receive that many XD so it's an honor.

You asked an older fan this question, so I personally wouldn't have used the word "coded" because... coded according to what code, right? Queer-coded, from what I understand, was originally a film school term describing how filmmakers in the US got around the Hayes code, which forbade any depiction of homosexuality from 1934-1968.

So the "coding" in "queer coded" would have been things that a US American audience - and specifically an audience familiar with the queer subculture - would have understand as gay. The idea was to depict the characters in a way that would be 100% obvious, 100% deliberate, and 100% deniable LOL in case the censors came knocking.

I'm not enough of an expert in Japan to be able to say whether the "code" over there is the same as in the US.... is it a common idea in Japan that gay people are more fashionable and sit cross-legged? I actually don't know... Maybe someone else who knows more about Japanese LGBTQ culture can weigh in.

I did read once read - in a slideshow presentation about BNHA ships of all things - that a big "tell" in Japan is that gay men supposedly use more polite / formal language, and refer to themselves with more feminine or neutral pronouns, and that's not Killua AT ALL lol, he's rude as fuck and uses "ore" which is the rudest and most masculine of all personal pronouns. (Gon uses it too.)

Another stereotype in Japan is that gay men are the "mom's friend," the boyfriend you want to take home to your parents because they are gentlemen... and also, that they tend to have more female friends than straight men. Hahaha. Arguably, even though Killua is a jerk to women (and men), he does form a lot of bonds with female characters... not just with his sister, whom he supports and loves unconditionally, but also with several female hunters - Melody, Palm and Bisky. He's distant at first but ends up sharing personal things with them, despite his uh extremely rude way of speaking and general hostility.

(It's not just the women though, Killua is hostile and rude to everyone - including for example Leorio, or Netero on the Hunter Exam blimp.)

I hope this doesn't sound dismissive by the way, I'm really happy to have been asked this question. Really this could just be a generational gap, because what you describe as "queer coded" we would have called "gay subtext" back when I first joined the fandom, but basically we're talking about the same thing, right?

And like yeah there's so much queer subtext in Hunter x Hunter, are you kidding me, Gon and Killua are obviously gay and in love!!!! Just look at them!!!!!!!

...Ahem. Anyway, I wrote a bit about Killua's romantic interest towards Gon here and there's tons of posts on tumblr about this, so I won't go over all the "evidence" again, but like yeah, in my mind Killua is 100% intended to cause the readers to raise their eyebrows, but 100% left deliberately vague.

BTW I was talking about the Hays code earlier, which obviously doesn't apply to Japan... but there are editorial standards at Weekly Shounen Jump, the Japanese magazine that publishes Hunter x Hunter. About 33% of WSJ readers are female and "fanservice" is a recognized way to build a big audience for your manga, but outright gay and trans characters are pretty few and far between, and often played for laughs. Thinking that Killua could be intended, by Togashi, to be read as a gay character, but that he had to sneak him past the editors is a pretty reasonable thing to think.

As far as his attitude towards LGBT stuff though.. that's a much more straightforward question. Him and Naoko Takeuchi (his wife, the author of Sailor Moon) are some of the most supportive people in the industry. Togashi once pitched a sports manga to Weekly Shounen Jump where the pitch was that all the main characters would be gay or crossdress.

Looks a bit like Kurapika, doesn't it? Or Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho. Sadly, the editorial board turned him down :(

This got a bit long, but in summary, while I don't think Togashi is going to ever come out and confirm Killua as gay in the text, I definitely think all those scenes with Gon that seem romantic in nature are intentional. And the reason I say that is that Togashi is a very deliberate writer... he puts a lot of things into the story on purpose. There's deliberate callbacks in the manga to things that happened hundreds of pages ago. The current manga arc has a murder-mystery subplot with 20+ suspects. And he writes the characters realistically, as multidimensional people, even when they come from stock tropes. I doubt he woke up one morning like, oh shit I accidentally gave the impression that the most popular character in my most popular manga is gay and in love with his best friend... I better fix this mistake immediately and make sure the readers know he's really straight. Like can you even imagine??? I just don't see it happening, ever.

P.S. What's really funny about trying to guess Togashi's intentions re: Killua is that he never talks about Killua in interviews. He's been open in discussing Gon - Gon is "a good polite boy who loves his mom, but actually a bad boy because a good boy wouldn't keep getting into fights as required by a battle manga." :P Later in the same interview, Togashi says Gon is the character with no normal reservations, so he (Togashi) needed to create another character as a foil to Gon, who would voice the reservations... and he says this character is Leorio. Not Killua!!!

In early sketches, all the main characters are there - except Killua.

Make of that whatever you want, but I've never seen an interview where Togashi says anything about Killua... even though Killua has been, from the very beginning, the most popular character in Hunter x Hunter. Go figure.

Analyzing Illumi Zoldyck's Character

Chrollo Analysis | Hisoka Analysis | Killua Analysis

What’s up y’all! Sorry for being away for the last few days. I needed a break from social media because I am so tired of seeing toxic, self-righteous people on my TL. Anyway, quite a lot of you liked my posts about analyzing HxH characters and somehow comparing them to VLD characters. Today, I’ll be talking about Illumi Zoldyck and I’ll try to compare him to a Voltron character. I know many people have already analyzed this character before, but it wouldn’t hurt to add to the discussion some years later. If you want me to write about anything else, send me an ask! The formatting of this post may be different than the one I wrote about Hisoka Morrow (click his name to view that post).

HERE WE GO!

In the first season, all of the characters are contestants for the Hunter’s Exam. I say contestants because this is a contest to see who can win without any injuries and can keep up with each host. I forget what number stage they were at, but I do know they were at the stage where each opponent has to fight each other. They are declared the winner if their opponent forfeits or gives up mid-match. (Off-topic, but) I am going, to be honest; Gon was my favorite character but his flaws began to show, annoyed me, and later led to his horrific downfall (based from YouTube clips). He didn’t know when to stop and kept pushing himself over the limit. Anyway, Killua and Gittarackur are set to fight. This is when things take a turn for the worse.

Gittarackur is a form of a disguise for Illumi to mask his identity. His face is long; nearly (and reminds me of) in the shape of a Tiki. His face also reminds me of the Witch Doctor mask from Scooby-Doo and Hell-raiser. He has several pins stuck in his face to maintain the facial features of Gittarackur. On the flip side, if he removes the pins, his biological form is revealed. Once he does this, Killua is nearly paralyzed; he cannot believe his eyes and I’m sure the trauma he endured at home hit him like a sack of rocks. Illumi then tells Killua that he wants him to return home, that he cannot maintain a friendship with Gon, stated that he was going to kill Gon, but realizes that if he does so he will be disqualified and will not obtain his Hunter’s license.

I’m assuming the cops aren’t a thing in this reality and the only way for them to “destroy” under the law is by obtaining the license. What do you think? I rarely see police officers; all I see are the Mafia and every they suck compared to the Zoldyck's and the Phantom Troupe. Shit, it seems like they’re the police but have twisted motives.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fictional character or not, first impressions matter and he bombed this one...even for a villain.

But you did this for what?

How can you hypnotize (by using Nen) your own brother into killing another opponent because he doesn’t want to become an emotionless zombie like you? At least, that’s my perception. Telling your brother to run every time he faces an opponent that he knows he cannot win against is the sickest shit I’ve ever seen. I know I’m jumping around but another thought popped into my head. As the seasons go on, Illumi expresses an odd way of loving his younger brother and to him, that means to make him suffer in the same way he had to. It seems like Illumi is jealous of Gon in a way. (I’ve seen clips on YouTube) Killua takes Alluka to the hospital to heal Gon. Illumi has stated several times to Hisoka that Killua was hiding rules from him and that he still wanted to get rid of Alluka. Although it is clearly stated why he wanted Alluka gone, I still think that Illumi was jealous of Gon simply because his younger brother preferred to be with a friend instead of him. This is why he emphasizes “You cannot have friends. Either they will betray you or you’ll betray them.”

As I read and watched as the seasons went on, I noticed something about Illumi and his family. We all know that the children were raised by their parents. Specifically, their dad is a trained assassin. I can’t remember but I think Zeno is their grandfather who is also an assassin.

I view him as a character that has suffered from abuse and trauma in order to mold him into an assassin. He is emotionless, doesn’t really care for others, has an odd relationship with Killua that he doesn’t have for his other siblings, and is a hypocrite. Killua can’t be friends with Gon but every time the show cuts to him, he’s with Hisoka? Something is fishy there. Are they more than friends? OK, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Here's the physical analysis below.

Face

When masquerading as Gittarackur, his face has several pins in them and his hair is in a rock star form of Mohawk that is purple. I’ll give him 10/10 for uniqueness, yet it still reminded me of Hell Raiser.

I’ve noticed that when he is in public he is in costume. Why doesn’t he reveal himself in public? I’ve researched this and no one could answer this question. My guess is that he is a verified hunter and assassin. How can you carry out your missions if everyone knows what you look like? Without the pins in his face, it reverts back to his natural state. To me, his large eyes and long, shiny black hair are his distinguished features. Although he may be my least favorite character, he does have pretty eyes. Haven’t you all heard of “I got lost in his/her eyes”?

Yeah, that can be said about him. Most definitely. He rarely smiles and when he does, something BAD is going to happen. I saw him laugh crazily once Alluka began the healing process, the Nen (I guess) rose from the hospital and got on him. This scene reminds me of how Haggar reacted once the Komar’s quintessence bounced from Voltron and bounced onto her. Wow, these supernatural abilities make y’all feel that good?

Clothes

Gittarackur and Illumi wear the same clothes, which should be a clear giveaway that they are the same. Illumi wears a neural green short jacket that has yellow pins in them, a light green shirt underneath, and green pants. His shoes remind me of loafers with a heel on them, something my grandmother would wear.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say again, these bad-ass men in this show are very stylish and seem to be in shape more than I am. Although Illumi irks me, his fashion is great and this is why people prefer him to be their favorite character. Shows should always produce characters that are memorable; that is the key to a long-lasting fan base.

In conclusion, this anime (for the most part) has well-rounded characters that make the plot interesting and wanting more.

Illumi and Lotor are somewhat similar. They both grew up in abusive households and lost some sense of sensitivity, common sense, and were often “misguided” by their own selfishness. Illumi wants a better life for Killua by constantly brainwashing him into thinking that he cannot have friends and his can only find happiness through killing. Zarkon raises Lotor to be a prince that shouldn't work with planets and should destroy them. This explains why he used deceased Alteans from the colony, drained their quintessence, and didn't give them a proper burial. Lotor IS just like his father but Killua IS NOT like Illumi. Ironic, huh? As we all know by now, Lotor is the son of Honerva (Haggar) and Zarkon. After the rift accident, he became an emotionless, ruthless monster that colonized and destroyed planets just to gain their quintessence. He taught this to his son and once he was old enough to think for himself, he refused to act in such a way. Although he was exiled and said he wasn’t like Zarkon, he was; but worse. Lotor studied and gained knowledge about Altea and its people while using Allura to gain the secrets of Oriande. I say he used her because he knew from the moment he met her that he was harvesting Altean quintessence. While fighting the white lion, he yelled “Victory or Death” which is a common catchphrase the Galra use when they are in battle. In fact, the Galra have been victims of trauma from Zarkon. Zarkon’s ruthless ways of ruling had no other motive except for obtaining quintessence so he could live forever. Silva’s way of raising his children was done to mold them into assassins. Since he was taught this way he did the same thing to his children. Zarkon, Silva, and Zeno think that their ways of parenting are necessary for survive in life when it doesn’t have to be that way. Illumi and Lotor have experienced this horrific parenting and deal with it in different ways. Illumi is oddly obsessive of his younger brother and Lotor is a fucking liar.
