The Habit He Can’t Break, 2/4
IQ 123 | Gordon Masson | 9.11.2023
“In Santiago, for instance, we’d sold out two full arenas of 13,000 cap, but then the government declared that for mass gatherings the number needed to be limited to 10,000 people.”
Rather than let fans down, Move added a third day, which again ended up selling out. “I remember being on a night plane from Miami, while Matt Vines was flying in from Dallas, and we were both using the aircraft wi-fi to negotiate via text for that third show. It was an interesting way to confirm putting the third date on sale, just three days before the actual show!”
He adds, “We’re taking a big bet on this tour when it comes to the number of cities and the capacities of the venues, but we’re hoping for the best, and we’ve gone out strong. We feel that the artist is in a good moment and that the latest album has just created more interest, so we’re looking forward to when he arrives in May.”
Further north, Ocesa will promote three dates in Mexico, including a stadium show at the F1 circuit, Autódromo Hermanos, Rodríguez, deepening Tomlinson’s footprint in that crucial North American market.
Meanwhile, in Tomlinson’s homeland, Jack Dowling at SJM is promoting seven UK dates in November at arenas in Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow, Brighton, Cardiff, London, and Birmingham, which will round out the European leg of the tour.
“SJM has done every show Louis has been involved with, including all the One Direction arena and stadium shows” notes Dowling, adding that on the first tour, the London show was originally penciled in as a Roundhouse, then two Roundhouse shows, before finally being upgraded to Wembley Arena.
“This time, The O2 arena show in London will be sold out, while all the others have passed the expectations of where we wanted to be on this tour. In fact, when the UK dates were announced, it ranked as the fourth most engaged tour on social media in SJM’s history – his fans are just nuts.”
But Dowling also reports that the fanbase for Tomlinson is expanding. “The demographics are pulling not just from pop, but also from indie rock now.”
Dowling adds, “Louis really looks after his fans. On the last tour, they did a deal with Greggs to give free food to the people waiting in line, as some of them camped out for days in advance.”
Out of My System
Ensuring his fans are looked after properly is the number one priority in Tomlinson’s live career.
Noting that Tomlinson’s audience comprises mainly young women and girls, Rowland reveals that, at the artist’s insistence, a safety team has been added to the tour to ensure everyone that attends his shows is looked after. “They manage all the safety within the shows for the fans,” she explains. “They came in for the Wembley show last year and have been with us ever since - they’ve been beneficial to the running of the tour.
“When he played in South America, some of his fans were camping outside for a month. So we have a responsibility to look after them. Coming to a show should be a safe place, it’s where they find joy, and we have a responsibility to protect that.”
Manager Vines comments, “One issue that we came up against almost all last year was crushing and fans passing out. We adopted a system where we could communicate with fans, who could hold up a mobile phone with a flashing red-and-white sign if they were in trouble but then we’d see them all popping up.
“I don’t know whether some of that was a hangover of the pandemic where fans just weren’t used to being in venues. But we experienced a number of situations where hydration and temperatures in venues became an issue. I know Billie Eilish went through similar issues.”
With Tomlinson determined to meet a duty of care toward his fans, Vines says that the team now sends a “considerable advance package” to promoters ahead of their tour dates. “Our safety team goes into venues in the morning, and basically ensures that a number of different things are in place – making sure that water is given to the fans, where the water comes from, and at what points in the show it happens.”
And on the crushing phenomena, he reports, “We’ve worked out how many fans it’s safe to have without a secondary barrier. So we instruct promoters to have certain barriers in place to relieve the pressure and avoid crushing.”
He adds, “I get detailed incident reports after each show, which lets myself and my management team know exactly what happened, and so far on this tour, we haven’t had any issues with crushing or hydration, which is fantastic.”
Production manager Craig Sherwood is impressed by the way the tour has pivoted to protect the ‘Louies.’ “The welfare officers are vital for the young girls were aged from, I guess, 14 upwards. They can get dehydrated and malnourished pretty quickly if they are camping out for days, so it’s important that we look out for their well-being,” says Sherwood.
Citing the extremes that the Louies will put themselves through in an effort to secure themselves prime positions at the front of the stage, Sherwood recalls, “The first show on our US tour was in February, and it was freezing, but we found out that girls had been camping out on the pavement for five days. It’s crazy, as we know these young girls are coming from all over the world to see Louis.”
However, Tomlinson’s connection with those fans is evident in the level of merchandise sales at each show. “It’s a huge part of our business, says Vines. “In America, we averaged about $36 a head, and it’s not much shy of that in Europe – we set a few national records in terms of spend per head. But we spend a lot of time on merch plans, and we do venue-specific drops and give it a lot of care and attention, as it’s a really important element of Louis’ business.”

Andoche Junot to Laure Junot, 13 October 1812 (I)
This is the second letter from Junot’s correspondence that had been intercepted by the Russian army during the campaign of 1812. While all letters carry the same date, it seems Junot wrote this one before he received his wife’s letter translated here. (But he did receive Laure’s letter on that very day, because he in reply wrote a second letter at six o’clock in the evening.)
Junot, Duke of Abrantès, to the Duchess Laure d’Abrantès. Moscow, 13 October 1812
Sic! This is obviously a mistake, either in the letter, in the transcript, or in the publication. As Junot says himself a bit further down, he was gouverneur of Mojaisk at the time. (And hated it.)
But, my dear Laure, why have you been so long without writing to me? You know how anxious I am to receive your letters and to learn about the state of your health, and there is another reason why I sincerely hope to receive five or six letters from you soon, because I expect that in the first few you'll scold me, ah! with a master's hand, you'll scold me once, twice, then you'll have carefully considered that there's nothing in all that I've told you that isn't aimed at your happiness, mine and that of your charming children; then you will adopt another style, you will laugh at me, at seeing me falling in love with my wife again, but nevertheless I hope you will not be too upset about it, because, as you are a bit of a coquette, it will be one more triumph, or rather you will be quite happy about it, because this love, founded on a very great desire to render its object happy, this love which no longer has wings and which will be bound by true friendship with the ties of nature, will only give us happier, brighter and more delicious days, but we must know how to keep it chained up lightly.
I had been tempted to make several stupid comments throughout that text but decided to leave it as it is – as one long, flowing sentence that almost seems more of a brainstorming, where one thing leads to the next. What I believe can be gathered from it:
There had been some kind of discussion between the spouses.
Junot had said something / made some proposals that Laure rejected.
He wants to reconcile with her, but only if his chains are »light« - i.e., he still wants to have his personal freedom (to go cheating and gambling?).
The one thing he’s very right about is the scolding that is headed his way … as I said, Junot wrote this letter before he received Laure’s letter from Aix. He continues, still talking about the chains that must not bind him too strongly:
If the knots were too tight it [the love] would do everything possible to escape. But the friendship that will always accompany it will console it for a little captivity that the happiness of others will make forget entirely. You were not yet in Paris on 19 September, so I hope that a longer stay at the waters has done you good; you are going to find your little Rodrigue very handsome, according to what they say. You will have weaned him, no doubt by the time you arrive, and you will see him grow and strengthen visibly.
This seems to be about the second son of the couple, born in Ciudad Rodrigo in November 1810. Laure in her letter had written about the older boy, according to Masson’s footnotes.
You will also rejoin your young ladies, who will have a little serious and stern demeanour; the air of a convent is contagious and there is no one who doesn't gain it after the shortest stay. Please tell me, my angel, what you will do in Paris, how you will live there, how happy you will be with your beautiful children and whether you will sometimes ask for their father, your best friend, interested in being it, and who puts all his happiness in yours. It's hard to imagine a government in the world worse than that of Mojaisk, I don't know if I'll be there much longer, but this stay will count in my life above that of Suez and Cathié.
Not sure what »Cathié« is supposed to mean, maybe yet another misspelled word? Carinthie?
The Emperor is still in Moscow, there is no news, we are always looking to the Moniteur for news, the Bulletin of 8 September is of interest to many people and everyone is waiting impatiently for it.
At this point editor Masson in a footnote is aghast to learn that apparently the army did not receive the bulletins supposedly written for it but had to wait for newspapers from France to read what the emperor in Moscow had said about it. Imperial machine not quite working as it used to, huh, Frédéric?
I'll also be very pleased to see that our troops have been praised for their conduct, they deserved it! What has become of Calo? You don't talk to me about her, no one does; have the waters done her any good, so let me have some news of her, if she doesn't want to give me any herself.
"Calo" apparently would be the baroness Caroline Lallemand, wife of general Lallemand, whose husband, similar to the husband of Junot’s mistress, was fighting in Spain. There is also a letter from Junot to Madame Lallemand – and in a footnote to this letter, Masson may actually bring us up to date about what was going on between Junot and Laure at this era: Apparently, at the beginning of 1812, Junot while staying at Bourgogne had – in good old fashion – managed to get his letters mixed up and had sent a letter destined for his mistress (not "Calo", yet another lady!) to Laure and vice-versa. Apparently, Laure even mentions this in her memoirs; can anyone confirm this (@snowv88, maybe?)
Which apparently had resulted in a somewhat stormy encounter between the spouses. Which now makes me think that Laure had basically kicked Junot out, and that this letter with its repeated declarations of love (but without chains, you hear me!) was, metaphorically speaking, Junot knocking at the back-door in order to be allowed in again.
Farewell, my dear Laure: I would love to be in this letter, in half an hour I would be on the road to Paris, in 20 to 22 days I would be there and I would kiss you, Joséphine, Constance, Napoleon and Rodrigue, all of whom I love with all my heart.
Junot is quite generous with his kisses 😁. There will be some more in the next letter to the lady whose name Masson so mysteriously conceals (well, a bit).

Wassily Kandinsky, with his painting "Dominant Curve", 1936.
Although Kandinsky was forced to leave Germany in 1933 due to political pressures, he did not allow the mood of desolation pervading war-torn Europe to enter the paintings and watercolours that he produced in France, where he remained until his death in 1944. His late works are marked by a general lightening of palette and the introduction of organic imagery; breaking away from the rigidity of Bauhaus geometry, he turned to the softer, more malleable shapes used by Paris-based artists associated with Surrealism, such as Jean Arp and Joan Miró. Kandinsky’s late, often whimsical, paintings were also influenced by the playful, intricately detailed compositions of his longtime friend and Bauhaus colleague Paul Klee.
During his first years in France, Kandinsky experimented with pigments mixed with sand, a technical innovation practiced during the 1930s by many Parisian artists, including André Masson and Georges Braque. Although Kandinsky utilized this method only until 1936, he created several paintings with rich, textured surfaces such as Accompanied Contrast, in which the interconnected colored planes and smaller floating patterns project slightly from the canvas. Always attentive to and appreciative of contemporary stylistic innovations, Kandinsky inevitably brought his own interests to bear on any aspects he would borrow. As art historian Vivian Barnett has pointed out, his employment of biomorphic forms—a motif favoured by Surrealist painters as well as by Klee—attests more to his fascination with the organic sciences themselves, particularly embryology, zoology, and botany.
During his Bauhaus years, Kandinsky had clipped and mounted illustrations of microscopic organisms, insects, and embryos from scientific journals for pedagogical purposes and study. He also owned several important sourcebooks and encyclopedias from which depictions of minuscule creatures found abstract equivalences in his late paintings.
A schematised pink-toned embryo, for instance, floats in the upper-right corner of Dominant Curve, while the figures contained within the green rectangle in the upper-left corner resemble microscopic marine animals. Various Actions is imbued with similar organic figures hovering above a celestial blue field. These buoyant, biomorphic images, often presented in pastel hues, may be read as signs of Kandinsky’s optimistic vision of a peaceful future and hope for postwar rebirth and regeneration.

Hi! I’ve been trying to learn more about the Hittite Kikkuli texts (especially CTH 284). Do you know if they’ve ever been fully translated into English? If they have, do you know where I can find this translation?
I’ve been looking online but I haven’t been able to find anything so far. I was hoping you, as the dead languages blog, might have some insight, or have some idea for where I could look next. Thanks!
Hi there! I have unfortunate news for you: as far as I can tell, there is no English translation of the full text, and it is not available on hittitetexts.com or CDLI. For the full translated text, you can look at Hippologia Hethitica (Kammenhuber, German) or L'Art de soigner et d'entraîner les chevaux (Masson, French)—neither of which is online either.
As you probably already know, Dent (The Horse Through Fifty Centuries of Civilization) made an English translation of part of the text, but only part, available here.
So I'm afraid that your next step is to ask your library for ILL copies of Kammenhuber and/or Masson, then use Google Translate or a multilingual friend. Good luck!

"Strange way of life" the Almodovar short with Pedro will be opening Cannes?! Seems like a big deal. I hope this means we get to see it outside of Cannes soon because I really wanna watch it and I know with short films it's notoriously hard to find a way to watch them.
Reported here:
https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2023/3/0xxzeto7kg7w96z651t6lfk9oonrk4
Do you know how disappointed I am this is only a short, and not a feature? Almodóvar is one of my absolute faves, and I was ecstatic when I heard Pedro was working with him - on a gay cowboy project, no less. But I guess I'll have to take what I can get! Looking forward to seeing Pedro in a tux at Cannes.

"WAS SHOT IN HEAD AND THROAT CUT," Kingston Daily Standard. November 7, 1913. Page 1. --- Cape Vincent Man Undoubtedly Murdered. ---- Robbery Was Probable Motive, But Authorities Say They Are Without Any Clues. ---- Watertown, Nov. 7. - John C. Byers, an aged Cape Vincent veteran whose body was found on Wednesday was murdered, according to Jefferson county officials. He was shot through the head and his throat was cut. An autopsy performed by Dr. T. H. Masson revealed the double means employed by an unidentified party to accomplish the crime.
A bullet entered the man's brain through the left eye, coming out at the rear of the skull and his throat was cut from ear to ear. The motive of the crime is supposed to have been robbery.
Aside from a tobacco pouch, found in one of the rooms of the little shack which Byers occupied, the authorities are without a clew to work upon. Sons of the murdered man declared that their father had never owned a pouch such as was found.
Diligent inquiry made among the residents of the section in which Byers lived failed to reveal the presence of any strangers in that vicinity about four weeks ago, when Byers was killed. The section is but sparsely settled.
Byers was known to have had a money belt, in which he carried a considerable amount, but no trace could be found of the belt. The two bank books discovered in a cotton sack about the victim's neck showed deposits of about $800 in the Watertown and the Jefferson County Savings banks of the city.
He had made no deposits in several months and the supposition is that he had several hundred dollars in his home when murdered. Although a thorough search was made not a dollar was found.
From spots about the rooms it is thought that the murder was committed in the bedroom, the body dragged out and shoved beneath the cot, where it was all but concealed.
Beneath the pillow on the cot a revolver, fully loaded, was found. The weapon was one that Byers had owned for some time and which he invariably carried, saying in explanation that no one would rob him with that in his possession.
A number of letters found in the house were brought here and will be read in the hope of gaining some clew to the identity of the murderer. The authorities admit, however, that the case is one that presents a baffling prospect of solution.

Letter from Junot to Mystery Lady (1812)
This is the third letter from a pack of mail sent off by general Andoche Junot and intercepted by the Russian army during October 1812. I have already translated two others related to this one (Laure Junot to her husband and Junot to Laure I). This now is a letter from Junot to his (former?) mistress (whose existence most likely was the cause of the rather harsh letter Laure had written to him from Aix). As already mentioned, all these letters are taken from a volume "Lettres interceptées par les Russes", edited and published by Frédéric Masson in 1913, and while Masson does kind of respect the incognito of the lady in question (possibly due to her family still being around and influential at the time of the publication?), he does offer plenty of clues to figure out her proper identity.
Also interesting: Laure Junot in her memoirs mentions that Junot did not like his extremely rare first name and sometimes called himself "Alexandre" instead. This would be an example. While the envelope clearly indicates that the letter comes from Junot (carrying the initials A.J. and a ducal crown for "Duke of Abrantès"), the signature says "Alexandre".
Alexandre to baroness L..e de F.., at Montigny Mojaisk, 13 October 1812 I was going to write to you this morning when Papa stopped by for breakfast. He arrived here yesterday from Wiasma with his son, who is still a bit ill and on his way to Moscow. He told me that he didn't receive any letters from you, that he wrote to you, but that he didn't receive anything. I wanted to tell him that he should put his letters in yours, but then I thought that maybe he didn't like having his letters bundled in that way. I was delighted to get to know this hussar that you love so much, when I learnt that it wasn't him; he's an officer too, I don't know if you know, he's in the second regiment of chasseurs à cheval. I found Papa in good health, I had a good breakfast prepared for him and together we visited some of the wounded generals returning from Moscow, some of whom are on their way back to Paris. Nansouty had a small bullet in the knee, he walks with crutches to make people pity him and is going to take the waters of Tivoli for his recovery. Enough about war, I want to tell you now, my darling L..e, that I love you more and more, that I am bored to death, that I want nothing more in the world than to see you again, that I live in the most despicable country in the world, that I will die of grief if I don't go to you soon, and that I will die of hunger if I stay here. Are you still very angry with my portrait? Is it really true that you didn't kiss it and closed your eyes with your thumb? Ah, tell me the truth, it would be a truly heroic trait to keep such a strong and resentful anger. Love is unforgiving, you don't have beautiful eyes, well, too bad for you, you won't be kissed, poor Alexandre, if your eyes were going to look like those in your portrait when you come back! Go away, you evil presentiment, let me believe that I shall always be the same for my L..e. We talked a little about the ladies of Montigny on the subject of painting; I did justice to the grace and lightness of the pretty landscapes that bonne amie does so well and, L..e, L..e draws marvellously, yes I said, but when she copies a painting, she always finds something to correct. "She's got a head", one said. "Full of wit and genius", I replied, and that was the end of the conversation. Will you be spending the bad season in Montigny? I hope not, there is nothing so contrary to virtue as boredom; come back to Paris, enjoy yourself and don't have time to find similarities; don't get me wrong, L..e, you could say 'He looked like you', but I wouldn't listen to reason, I'm telling you in cold blood, I would kill you. Oh, my God! What would become of me if I had killed my L..e. I would do as the handsome Dunois did when he so clumsily bedded the beautiful Dorothée. I would quickly withdraw my sword, and I would fall on it pierced through and through. But it's better to be close to L..e in good health, to love her, to tell her that, to hear that she loves too, and to steal that charming word from her rose lips. Adieu, my darling angel, to tell you a thousand times that I love you is to repeat a thousand times the only sensible thing I have. It does not matter, that word is delicious and I'll say it a thousand times over, with a kiss every time. A thousand as pretty things to bonne amie, who I hope is in good health, and a little kiss to Blanche. Farewell, love for life. Alexandre
Oookay. That was … intense, for sure.
Assuming that this letter is real and not part of yet another prank, it makes me think Junot had managed to get himself in hot water with both ladies involved in the lettre de Bourgogne affair. At least he seems to think his mistress was mad at him? Or really only at his painting? And the suggestion that he might kill the lady in question, if this lady felt so bored during the winter season that she would look for somebody who resembled Junot enough for her to take him as a replacement … well, even if it’s only a rhetorical phrase, it does not sit well with me. (The emphasis on "kill" is in the original letter, by the way.)
So, who was the recipient of that letter? Frédéric Masson in a footnote even gives her name – her maiden name, that is: Elisabeth-Augusta Daniels, called "Lise" (hence the "L..e" in the letter). And the "Papa" mentioned to have had breakfast with Junot is explained to be her father, or rather her stepfather: Lise’s mother, from the region of Mainz, had divorced Lise’s father and married French general Baraguey d’Hilliers. Lise’s beloved hussar whom Junot at first believed to have encountered would have been her brother Joseph Karl Wilhelm Daniels, when in truth the young man in the company of general Baraguey d’Hillier was Achilles Baraguey d’Hillier.
I’m kind of relieved to see contemporaries were as confused about family relations as I tend to be on reading about them.
So, who was Lise in turn married to? As can nowadays be found out with a brief online search, her husband was a certain general Maximilien Foy, one of the best generals in Spain, according to most historians, and acclaimed author of a book on the Peninsular war himself. I can only assume that this identification was not as easy for the general public in 1913, when Masson published the letters, but easy enough for historians. Otherwise, Masson going to great length to hide her name while hinting at her true identity would not make much sense.
On a fun note: "Tivoli" is a name usually given to entertainment parks. So when Junot suggests that Nansouty was going home to take "the waters of Tivoli", he probably means that Nansouty was just trying to get into a nicer environment.

Leclerc says Le Mans is a box I want to tick after Ferrari victory | RaceFans Round-up
In the round-up: Charles Leclerc says he wants to take part in the Le Mans 24 Hours one day after Ferrari won the event for the first time in 58 years. In brief Leclerc hopes to tackle Le Mans “one day” Speaking yesterday after Ferrari claimed its first outright victory at La Sarthe since 1965, Leclerc said he “would love to” take part in the race himself one day. “It’s an incredible event,” he told Eurosport. “For sure one day in my life I want to tick that box. When it will be I don’t know. I’m just extremely proud of what Ferrari has done today. It’s been crazy.” Former F1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi shared victory in the race with Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado. Ferrari’s second car finished fifth. “It feels absolutely amazing,” said Leclerc. “Having a Ferrari winning it’s incredible after a return after so many years, it’s a very special edition. Unlucky for the second Ferrari as we had a small impact with a small rock on one radiator so that made us lose a lot of time.” Hartley defends Hirakawa over costly crash Toyota hypercar driver Brendon Hartley backed team mate Ryo Hirakawa after his potentially race-losing crash at Arnage late in the race. The number eight Toyota was chasing the race-winning Ferrari at the time. Having been 16 seconds off the lead before Hirakawa’s error, the car dropped to more than three minutes adrift. The leading Ferrari beat them to victory by 81 seconds. “I knew if we just tried to put them under some kind of pressure, they had the pace advantage, but we did everything,” Hartley said after the race. “We threw everything at them. “We put Ryo in, we said, ‘look, full risk, maximum attack – we want to win the race’. He had a little accident, it happens. It could happen to any of us, and it happened to many guys out there the last 24 hours. So full support for Ryo as well. The goal was to go maximum attack and that’s what we did.” Boya takes clean sweep at Monza MP Motorsport driver Mari Boya won the second of two races in the Eurocup-3 at Monza to complete a clean sweep of the weekend and take his third successive win in his participation in the series. Boya fell to third at the start but climbed back to pass Esteban Masson in the closing laps to win. The victory moves Boya up to second in the series championship, four points behind Masson.
