Hanakotoba Analysis

Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki -> Daisy (Bellis)

Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki’s official flower is the Daisy (Bellis) as pictured on his official birthday artwork. Daisies are known as chú jú (雏菊) in Chinese and hinagiku (雛菊) in Japanese. This flower is associated with the meanings of “innocence”, “devotion”, “justice”, “charity” and “beauty” in English floriography. Its hanakotoba meanings are “peace”, “hope”, “beauty” and “chastity”. In Japanese culture, daisies are also often associated with new beginnings and are thought to bring joy and happiness to those whom it is gifted. In China, the flower is mainly associated with innocence, purity, hope, and new beginnings. Additionally, they can symbolize simplicity, sincerity, springtime, happiness, and new love. Cheng Xiaoshi is best described as someone with a good heart whose playful, stubborn and impulsive nature can be interpreted by others as being childish and irresponsible. He is extremely sensitive and deeply empathetic with a strong sense of justice. These characteristics paired with his impulsiveness often not only lead to him making decisions with his heart rather than his head—landing not only himself but also those around him in a myriad of tricky situations—but also result in him doing things that are in the best interest of others but are detrimental to himself. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of justice, charity and devotion. His seemingly boundless optimism and upbeat personality complement the flower’s meanings of joy, happiness, and springtime. When Lu Guang was asked by Qiao Ling, what attracted him to Cheng Xiaoshi, he stated that it was the other’s naivety. This ties into the flower’s meanings of innocence, sincerity, purity and simplicity. Cheng Xiaoshi has the ability to enter the time of any photo by possessing the body of the person who took the photo. Using this ability, he is able to directly change the events within a 12-hour timeline of the photo (i.e., alter past events). This ties into the daisy’s meanings of new beginnings and hope. Additionally, when using this ability, Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centre of the daisy.

Lu Guang/Hikaru -> Forget-me-not

Lu Guang/Hikaru’s official flower is the forget-me-not as pictured on his official birthday artwork. The forget-me-not (Myosotis) is known as wù wàng wǒ (勿忘我) in Chinese and wasurenagusa (勿忘草) in Japanese. As its name suggests the flower is associated with the meanings of “true love” and “memories” in English floriography. Its Japanese name means “don’t forget me” thus associating the flower with its hanakotoba meanings of “true love” and “remembrance”. In China, the flower is associated with not only true love and memories but also fidelity and faithfulness. Lu Guang is typically calm, patient, responsible and uptight. Although not always blatantly obvious, Lu Guang cares deeply for his friends and always does things that are in their best interest. Although typically stoic and cautious, when those important to Lu Guang are in danger, he will break his usual calm façade and show anger and concern as well as pull off precarious manoeuvres to save them. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of faithfulness and fidelity. Lu Guang has the ability to see everything that happens within a 12-hour timeframe after a photo has been taken. Photographs are able to capture important moments with loved ones in order to be preserved and looked back upon at a later date. Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi’s abilities rely on photographs and are used to analyse and manipulate memories, respectively. This further links Lu Guang to the forget-me-not flower. Additionally, when using their respective abilities Lu Guang’s eyes turn ice-blue whereas Cheng Xiaoshi’s turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centred, blue blossoms of the forget-me-not, respectively. Qiao Ling/Rin -> Hyacinth

Qiao Ling/Rin’s official flower is the hyacinth as pictured on her official birthday artwork. The hyacinth (Hyacinthus) is known as fēng xìn zǐ (风信子) in Chinese and haiashinsu (ヒヤシンス) in Japanese. The hyacinth is seen as a symbol of sophistication, refinement, grace and elegance in English floriography. It is also known as a symbol of love and passion. It is also sometimes associated with rashness, games and rebirth. Its hanakotoba meanings are friendship, affection and “love beyond sorrow”. The bright colours of hyacinths are said to represent joy and happiness―and is thus seen as a gesture of goodwill when gifted to others in Japanese culture. In China, the flower is associated with good luck and fortune and is thus often used during special occasions and celebrations as an auspicious decoration. It is said that the hyacinth’s bright colours and cheerful blossoms bring prosperity and good luck to those who see it. Qiao Ling is best described as outspoken, expressive, and compassionate. She deeply trusts those she is close to and is very protective over them. Qiao Ling typically possesses a playful and upbeat personality. These traits tie into the hyacinth’s meanings of joy, passion, friendship and goodwill. Although often seen bickering with Cheng Xiaoshi―she retains an air of gracefulness and ladylikeness and often dresses very stylishly, which fits in with the flower’s meanings of elegance, grace and sophistication.

Official Art Celebrating 400 Million Views

In this official art the flower bouquet that Cheng Xiaoshi is holding might be his official flower the daisy (Bellis) but could also be camomile flowers. Camomile also known as chamomile is a daisy-like plant in the same family as the Bellis genus (Asteraceae family). Camomile is known as yáng gān jú (洋甘菊) in Chinese and kamomīru (カモミール) in Japanese. In English floriography, the flower represents the concepts of having “patience in adversity” and “energy in adversity”. In hanakotoba, the flower conveys the meanings of “enduring adversity” and the “power to be born in adversity”. Both the English and Japanese meanings derive from the fact that camomile grows like a creeper on the ground and persists even if trampled on―even growing stronger the more it is stepped on. These meanings greatly complement Cheng Xiaoshi’s immense optimism, endurance, and perseverance that persists despite him being faced with difficult circumstances and harsh obstacles.

In this official artwork, Lu Guang isn’t pictured with his official flower, the forget-me-not but is instead pictured with a bouquet of statice. Statice (Limonium) is also known as sea lavender and marsh rosemary despite not being related to either lavender or rosemary. Statice is known as bǔxuè cǎo shǔ (补血草属) in Chinese and sutāchisu (スターチス) in Japanese. Similarly, to forget-me-nots, this flower is associated with memory and remembrance. In English floriography, this flower represents “longing”, “remembrance”, “success” and “sympathy”. Purple statice in particular represents suppleness and elegance. The hanakotoba meanings associated with statice are “unchanging heart” and “uninterrupted memory”. The vibrant colour of these flowers does not fade even when dried. This attribute has resulted in its hanakotoba meanings “unchanging heart”, “uninterrupted memory”, and “eternal immutability”. These meanings are similar to that of the forget-me-not and consequently complement Lu Guang’s character in a similar manner.

Passing a birthday with the Host Club is over the top. They don’t do the most - they do the absolute max out on all their fancy rich people cards.

Haruhi just wants a fun quiet event with snacks, a few decorations, and maybe some fancy tuna if it’s a big birthday. (Naturally, Haruhi does not get this. She’s kidnapped for a day of festivities, and even her dad lets the Host Club have their way because he’s invited to the dinner feast. The local sea area is now out of tuna, fancy and regular.)

Kyoya rents out an entire island so he can buy a quiet day and relax by himself with NO MAYHEM. Of course, Tamaki still finds him, but it was a blissful 43 minutes.

Honey throws a cake tasting party, flying in the British Bake Off hosts and participants for a “British Bake Off… in Japan!” special episode. He, and the friends he invites, are the ones who decide on the winners.

Hikaru takes over an entire building for a giant, full day, Hunger Games style, paintball battle. Doctors are on hand, and this year, only two people needed to be rushed to the hospital.

Mori rents out the zoo. Not in a “have your birthday party here!” kind of way, but doors are closed, peasants return home, it’s just me and my besties chilling with the animals and feeding them all the snacks. The twins are the reason why all zoos have increased the required height of railings to be higher.

Kaoru would also want to do some crazy outdoor activity paired with something chill. Think skydiving or bungee jumping, and then once you realize the shortness and fragility of life, there’s a private art lesson with a famous painter at the largest art museum in Tokyo.

Tamaki’s birthday is like 10 separate parties all crammed into one day. First, there’s a dress up cosplay event. Second, roller blading. Third, bowling. Fourth, amusement park rides and games. Fifth, food, drinks, and decorate your own cake. Yes, an entire cake for each person and any color and flavor and type of sprinkles you could possibly imagine. Sixth, build your own bear. He bought one of the build a bear machines, and it now lives in his house. Seventh, karaoke and photo shoot with everyone and their new bears. Eighth, movies with everyone and their bears. Ninth, pinatas. Plural. However many branches there are in the surrounding area, there are pinatas. And it’s not regular sized or cheap ass fun sized mini bars, nah man, nothing less than KING sized candy bars for our king. Tenth, PRESENTS! It’s not until just before midnight when you are finally released and allowed to return home.

Infinity week event 8-14 (Part 1)

The event was hosted by Hatanaka Tasuku (Reki's voice actor) and Producer Uryuu! There were some musical acts and Hatanaka answered some questions and we even got some questions answered by Utsumi!

The show was opened by Rude-a singing paradise and then Hatanaka came out on the stage.

Rude-a said he hadn't sung in a while and he actually has a hang over (he's too honest? lol) and Hatanaka joked that he didn't seem hung over lol. They talked about how it was the first event for SK8 held in Okinawa and mentioned that Rude-a is from Okinawa. They asked the audience who was from Okinawa and who was visiting for the event. There was about half of each. Some people were there for the first time. Hatanaka asks if there is anything he recommends for people visiting and Rude said they should eat Okinawa Soba. He recommended a place called Gon. Then they waved at the viewers of the stream lol.

Then they moved onto the "Our infinity talk!!" section and Producer Uryuu came out. They mentioned that the 8th was Reki's birthday and say happy birthday to Reki. Hatanaka says he was really moved by how everyone drew pictures for Reki for his birthday. They mention that Kobayashi Chiaki (Langa's actor) was supposed to be at the event but he caught covid and was unable to attend. But Uryuu is here to take his place for today!

There was a typhoon that hit Tokyo this weekend and Hatanaka says he wasn't sure if they'd be able to do the Okinawa event because of the typhoon but it turned toward Tokyo so Okinawa was okay lol.

The week started with a screening event on the 8th hosted by Midorikawa Hikaru (Cherry's voice actor). Hatanaka says that he heard what Midorikawa talked about was like he was a serious fan of the show. Uryuu said it sounded like he's a "Deep Fan" lol. Hatanaka says that having someone like Midorikawa be so invested in SK8 is really moving to him and a junior actor. Uryuu says that Midorikawa really praised Hatanaka and Hatanaka is really embarrassed and pleased to hear it. He said but "What do I do if he thinks that Reki has changed when we continue?!" and that he would work really hard to do his best as Reki.

They talk about the pictures and the quiz that they posted on the website and Hatanaka says that all the pictures were quite good but the quiz was SUPER HARD. He only got a 36 when he took it. Uryuu asks who in the audience got better than him and pretty much everyone raised their hands lol. Hatanaka says that the comments that they gave when you got your results were like when you take tests to get into schools and it made him want to try harder. He was going to comment about the question about how many times he yelled "Langa!" in the show but Uryuu told him he couldn't say the answer so he just said he guessed 12 lol. Uryuu says that they counted how many times it was noted in the script but how Hatanaka acted it might have come across different to people. They joke about how many times Hatanaka said "Ganga" but Uryuu says they didn't count that.

Next they got a video message from Midorikawa Hikaru.

He asks if everyone is having a good time at the event and that while everyone was probably really excited during infinity week today is the last day! He jokes about Hatanaka being sick with covid last week and hopes he's well now. Hatanaka says he is lol. Midorikawa then says that since it's the end he personally thinks that there will be something special at the end of the event!

Uryuu and Hatanaka comment about how Midorikawa always seems so passionate about SK8 and Hatanaka says he might be the most enthusiastic out of the whole cast lol.

Hatanaka then pulls out a letter from his pocket and starts reading it and it turns out to be a letter from Kobayashi Chiaki! He apologizes for not being able to attend the event and Hatanaka says "don't worry just rest!" He was really looking forward to the event in Okinawa and he's feeling better so he hopes to see everyone again. "I'm sure that Reki and Langa are secretly watching somewhere so make sure to enjoy the event fully!" "P.S. I don't want chinsuko (Okinawan cookies) as a present I want beni imo tart (purple sweet potato tart)" (this is in reference to an exchange Hatanaka and Kobayashi had on twitter when it was announced that he wouldn't be able to attend. Hatanaka said he'd bring him chinsuko as a present.)

Hatanaka says that he asked Kobayashi on Line if there was anything he wanted to say and normally people would say "good luck!" or something but he came back with this long message lol. Uryuu mentions it would have been his first time in Okinawa so it's a little sad he wasn't able to come so she hopes they can do it again someday.

Uryuu asks if Hatanaka went anywhere since he got there yesterday and he says he can't really say since it would be spoilers(????) but he went to places that appear in SK8.

He says that he wasn't able to go to the park where Reki and Langa practice since it's about to be under construction. They tell the audience they can still go there before the construction though lol....

Next they bring out a big box of questions for Hatanaka to answer. Hatanaka reaches in and grabs random questions.

The first question is if there is any scene that he remembers as difficult to act and he had to do a lot of retakes on.

He says that almost all of the scenes had retakes but there was one that he remembers. The scene where he reacts to Langa's first time doing an ollie. He acted it normally as just excited that he did it. Just happy and having fun. But the vocal director told him this scene was supposed to show his thanks to Langa and he should say Langa's name like was saying thank you because he was so thankful to see it. That seeing him see that was the same as him feeling like he was seeing snow falling.

They comment that he must be really happy to have a friend who will skate with him.

The next question is if his impressions about skating have changed since working on SK8.

He says yes. Since honestly he didn't know anything about skating before, but seeing sk8 made him really feel how difficult these tricks are and how high they were jumping and so watching the skateboarding at the 2020 olympics was really fun and exciting. Uryuu says that the staff group chat was really lively.

Hatanaka says that he and Chiaki met one of the competitors, Hirano, because of the show and so he was really excited seeing him compete.

The next question was what was the scene that was the most memorable when he first received the script.

He says ADAM's scenes were really memorable but because at first when reading them, like when Joe was explaining ADAM and he called him the "matador of love" it made him want to laugh. But then actually seeing him in the show he's actually scary and you understand. Even when you see things in the script like "wings appear behind langa" it makes you go "WHY DOES HE HAVE WINGS!?" but actually seeing SK8 it's unbelievable (in a good way). He said that seeing Koyasu act made him feel scared and it was the first time he felt that way while recording.

The next question is about how he felt when Reki and Langa were fighting.

Uryuu said that period was a long time since it was about a whole month. Hatanaka says that he and Kobayashi drove to the recording studio together and so it was awkward between them during that time. They only said a few words between them the whole time. and wondering why they were like that just made it even more awkward lol. He really sympathized with Reki and it lasted from ep 7-10 so it was a long time. But he also thought it was good to be able to use it for the acting lol.

He says the Director was a little worried about them and told them to get along but he didn't think it would be that big of a deal.

They now run out of time to answer questions and move to the next segment.

Main cast one question one answers!

I've been posting these on my tumblr all week so you should know what these are lol.

They did a series of them while they were airing the show and this is the second round of questions to promote the event. Uryuu says that they got the questions from people on twitter so you have all of them (the audience) to blame for the questions lol.

Since they had just posted question 7 they decided to show question 7 in the theater. Hatanaka apologizes for giving everyone the same name as the skateboard. but he thinks they're that important to the series? He's confused by Koyasu's answer and Uryuu says it's because Hachi is how you pronounce 8 so they're 8 names.

People on twitter also answered the questions and they chose one answer for each question they found the most interesting to share with everyone.

Q1: What was the first thing you said when you heard there was going to be more of SK8? I hope ADAM (Ainosuke-san) doesn't get arrested!

Q2: Carla got a new ability! What can she do? She's able to make carbonara all on her own. (He voice is Joe's while she cooks)

Q3: You got a job as a capman from ADAM. What does he ask you to do? While the leader (Kikuchi) is monitoring the live feeds being displayed, I need to collect the cigarette butts that ADAM drops and pick up the red carpet and return them to the leader.

Q4: What lines would you give to this shot? Even though Sakurayashiki-sensei isn't wearing clothing suited for the beach, why does the beach suit him!?

Q5: SHADOW got his own song! What is it called? Orange Tulip ~I'm a shy guy~

Q6: You received a full swing kiss from ADAM! What are your thoughts!?! I understand how a beaten futon feels now

They say they will give presents to the people whose answers were chosen. Hatanaka asks if there are people in the audience who were chosen and there are a few people who say they were.

Since it's infinity week they need 8 questions so they asked Hatanaka another question at the event lol. They also get Kobayashi to answer the questions even though he's not there and they say they'll see who wins between them by who gets the most cheers.

Q8: If you were told "you're my dog for the rest of your life" what would you answer?

Kobayash: A guy named Hatanaka Tasuku would make a much cuter dog than me!

Hatanaka is mildly offended and says it's not a cute answer lol.

Hatanaka: Then, you'll be my master for the rest of your life! Hurry up and put a collar on me and take me to Kokusai Street (where the op was based on) I'm really excited for everyone to see me.

They then ask for claps to see which one was best and Hatanaka obviously wins lol.

Hatanaka says he feels embarrassed winning because he answer was super masochistic.

Uryuu says he won a souvenir set and Hatakana asks if it's wrong to give it to Kobayashi as his present and Uryuu says they'd have to see if it had beni imo tart in it.

If Riku's trailer shows tomorrow at TGS or as a surprise or any day outside the event during this month (which is also my birthday month), I think it would be my perfect serotonin and gift to get me out of the blocky pit I'm in every time I try to move forward with Kingdom Hearts CC (I don't care either if it's a trailer featuring Xion or Aqua). Seriously, every time I get to work on Riku's gloves so that texture doesn't interfere a bit with his jacket, while listening to Hikaru Utada and Yoko Shimomura in background, my mind gets blocked…. Upon finding the sealed envelope on her vanity, Melissa just knew what it all meant - even if there had been no news network relaying the events taking place so far away from Midgar or if the penmanship had been a strange one, a mother always sensed things differently in relation to her children. And while Hikaru (or rather, Sephiroth) had not been born from her body, he was her son.

It was just how she viewed the man - grown-up and deadly when transferred to Melissa's care and thanks to Shiva's grace, but embraced by the innocence of a young boy with the amnesia that plagued (or blessed?) him at the time. Theirs had been a journey of discovery - of the delicate and yet intense bonds that bloomed from simple acts such as washing hair, discovering one's favorite fresh fruit or even celebrating birthdays together.

Sephiroth had caused the deaths of many - a man deprived of humanity and fashioned into a weapon, but not while living under a false name and at the inn. For a while, he had just been 'Hikaru' - the light in her life, a silent presence that yet offered so much joy to Melissa. All the misguided, suffocated love that lingered in her heart and threatened to overflow finally had a worthy recipient. Hikaru needed a mother as strongly as she needed to care for him.

Gone were the ideas of having in him an ally against Corneo, some additional protection for the inn employees and slum residents - that was all secondary. Selfishly, Melissa had thought that their bliss would not be cut short - they had endured their trials and the gods wouldn't be as cruel as to separate those meant to find one another, right?

Not quite.

The woman who clutched the letter to her chest and sobbed with abandon did not react as the average Midgarian would to the news of an iconic figure suddenly re-emerging and then returning to the Lifestream (again?). Sephiroth had inspired many, then terrified even more people - but Melissa couldn't (wouldn't) believe that he was the same. Whoever the general had been - Hikaru was now part of him.

Her son, her curious child, her loving offspring with beautiful mako eyes, tender hands despite the calloused palms, soft touches even if he had no shortage of excuses to be cruel. All the vile words that the news channel kept repeating and people commented about were wrong - hurtful vitriol, baseless accusations. It stained his memory and eroded his good deeds.

What about the homeless children he defended? The girls he stood for? The old and vulnerable who breathed a sigh of relief when he emerged from a dark corner to face those sent by Corneo? Hikaru (and Sephiroth, by extension) had been human, loved and admired without the pomp and circumstance of a 1st Class. He had been himself.

He had been her son and Melissa would never forget him.

"I will see you again, Hikaru," the words were broken, the sobs making it hard for anything to get out at all. No trace of the melodic timbre or the warmth of her eyes remained - just steel determination to make the same journey as he had, "I know. I feel it. I will see you again, my son."

Hikaru at Music Champ event

The other day, Hikaru appeared as a guest on day 2 of the Music Champ promo campaign to celebrate the release of SHAZNA's album "参華三釼" 🎼 (Tweet by Hikaru). The song corner seems to have been pretty neat from what I could tell from various responses on Twitter. Not sure how many songs they sang in total but they definitely did a collab of "Blackbird" by The Beatles (reminds me of Hikaru's Birthday Event from 2018). I haven't been able to watch any of the latest Music Champ streams so I have honestly no idea what's going on at the moment T_T.

In Crimson Resolve, Hikaru tells Ao that she's 13. However, the Magia Day 2022 event revealed that Hikaru is actually 14.

This means that either Hikaru was 13 when she met Ao in CR, but had a birthday sometime during Arc 2, or she decided to tell Ao a totally pointless little lie for no discernible reason

Appearance and Personality

Appearance: Hotaru is a very tall yet muscular man but is a bit slender from a distance in a different POV. He has long golden ash hair which he ties it into a low and ponytail. Like some of the people in the inner beast race, he too has heterochromia eyes as well, neon blue colored on his left eye while light purple colored on his right eye considered to be his beast eye. Hotaru is rather a stiff and stern person which he seems to get annoyed easily.

Personality: Born either as the middle or youngest child in his family bloodline could either be a part of Clementine's family cooperation for any missions, he never seemed to like his days as a teenager and only focused his occupations as an assassin, that is till he reached age 20 which his parents that decided to choose a partner or two for him, much to dismay.

At first he was only one of the options and was hoping not to get picked, until he met his husband and his two wives during that event. It didn't take long for him to get a click from all three of them... He had one trouble in mind that the three would fight over... But instead of what he thought he had in mind, all three of them had decided to married him all together, Hotaru didn't expect this was coming as well but he was glad that all three of the were getting along after the wedding.

The current Hotaru we're now seeing after getting married has a very stiff personality and took equally took his jobs one at time to not bring up the stress in him, cause it will definitely worry his second wife if she knew about it. Despite the fact that he's serious but he knows how to take care of the students, needless to say he has a bit of a gentle side that no one can see, which only his husband and wives can see it whenever he's with them.

But he does have quite an interesting charisma, especially towards sense of fashion on magazines that catches his eye. Needless to say as an assassin he knows how to blend in with a lot of style, some of them can agree with him.

Try not to get into his bad side if you annoy him for too long. Hotaru has a bit of patience but it goes go off whenever he's in a mad mood. He'll might give you a very clear warning about making him pissed, be prepared if you can. He's also easy to get annoyed though, especially since Clementine and Akira knew how to do it.

This man has a weird life after getting married, but hey at least he's going to be fine.

-The name 'Hotaru' is primarily a male name of Japanese origin that means Firefly. While his surname 'Junya' is a name for boys, combines the kanji for “purity” with ya, a character often used for phonetic purposes in given names.

-He's based on Irina Jevalic from the series.

-He's mostly annoyed for being called 'Professor Ass' from Clementine and Akira sometimes, would give either of them a heck of schoolwork thanks to that.
