For the first time since the games were created the tributes would be assigned mentors. Twenty-four of the Academy’s best and brightest seniors have been tapped for the job.
Eddie fantasizes for a few seconds about refusing.
He knows it wouldn't help the tributes, though. The peacekeepers would most definitely drag him out and beat the shit out of him or— Eddie isn't sure if it would be possible but the president might want to make an example out of him and throw him into the arena along with all the other tributes.
So, he stays silent and lets the guilt consume him.
“And last but least, District Twelve girl, Maddie Buckley. . . she belongs to Eddie Diaz.”
Eddie looks up to see a terrified girl— she couldn't be older than eighteen, this probably was her last year with her name in the reaping, what are the odds. She looks a little worn down, with some dirt on her cheek and what looks like an almost faded black eye. Her lips are visibly trembling as she takes slow steps towards the stage.
And then—
"Stop! Stop!" A voice breaks through the thick silence and hands appear from the crowd. A few seconds later a boy is running towards the girl, being stopped by peacekeepers just seconds before he can reach her. "Maddie! Maddie!"
He has dirty blonde hair and eyes so wide and a dark blue that reminds Eddie of a relentless, force of nature, kind of storm. He looks a little skinny but Eddie gets glimpses of muscles under the two sizes too big shirt he's wearing when the officers pull him back and the piece of clothing stretches against the guy's chest.
The boy keeps screaming, his voice becoming hoarse, breaking everytime he speaks. "I volunteer! Let me volunteer!"
The boy keeps fighting against the peacekeepers and the girl is now being held back but her arms are stretched out and reaching for him.
"Can he do that?" Chimney leans in, whispering so only Eddie can hear. "Can there be two boys as tributes?"
Eddie can't look away from the screen. He sees one of the peacekeepers punch the boy but that doesn't even deter him in the slightest.
"I'm not sure. I mean, maybe?" He frowns. "I guess the Capitol only needs kids to kill each other. Why does it matter if they're a boy or a girl, right?" He wouldn't be able to stop the bitterness and anger from slipping into his voice even if he tried.
"Yeah,I guess you're right."
Eddie watches as his dad and Jeffery Hudson, the creator of the games, talk in hushed whispers.
It feels like an eternity until the cameras focus back on district 12.
"After careful consideration, we've decided to accept this boy's eager willingness and embrace him into the 10th Hunger Games." The announcer says. "District Twelve boy, Evan Buckley… belongs to Eddie Diaz. May the odds be ever in your favor."

gn!reader, no content warnings, pure fluff fluff fluff (and how long has it been since i’ve said that, huh?). written as a cheeky little secret santa present for the gorgeous @liykaii , organised by the incomparable god of organisation @daveyistheloml - all my love to the pair of you!! <333 inspired by ‘origin of love’ by MIKA, and it shows. sam doing some totally-normal washing up in just over 1000 words.
“Come back safe, darlin’.”
He doesn’t say it loudly, but he knows you’ve heard it - mostly because he can see you freeze where you’re fiddling with your seatbelt, and hear you turning to Milo and demanding that he get a move on before you’re late to David’s. Those wolf senses really are a blessing, aren’t they?
There’s a sharp peal of laughter at your flustered state, a gleeful shout of “We’ll have ‘em back in time for dinner, Mister Collins!”, and the muffled thud of a half-hearted punch before Milo gives in and drives away. He watches the taillights as they disappear into the trees, and sighs fondly at the thought of the embarrassed, lovesick teasing that’s happening in that car at this very moment. You’ll be getting on Milo's case about all those flowers he’s ordered for his mate for their anniversary coming up, and he’ll be laughing up a storm once he realises just whose shirt you’re wearing.
Honestly. A whole pack of troublemakers. God, he loves those wolves to pieces.
(Well, not all in quite the same way. It’d probably be a bit awkward if he did, y’know?)
He ducks back inside, grateful for the early winter nights that let him see you off on the porch like this. It’s not quite the same, in summer, and if he’s honest it’s the damnedest thing. Why can’t it be nighttime all the time?
It’s a little sad, he’s always thought, how easy people think it is to get used to this. Walking back into the kitchen to get started on a dinner that he doesn’t need to eat, smiling at the way the picture frames in the hall always seem to be slightly askew, clicking his tongue at your talent for leaving cups next to the dishwasher but not actually putting them inside. His mate, his mate. Running the hot water, and he’s never loved you more.
People say this is easy, don’t they? Being in love (and isn’t that a thought? Sam Collins, in love. Who knew the day would come?). It isn’t right, the way some folks take the whole thing for granted - it makes his blood boil, it really does. He’d go to the ends of the earth for you, follow you anywhere, give you anything you could possibly wish for. Whatever you decide, whatever you command, he has no choice but to blissfully obey.
At your feet, staring up at his saviour, head cradled in your hands and heart held gently between your bloody teeth. He’s soaked, waist-deep in the thousand blessings of you, and being in love is the conscious choice to tread water. Love doesn’t happen without air, and floating isn’t fun, when it’s not with you.
Clouds parting through the kitchen window, liquid silver splashing in the sink. It should always be nighttime, if you ask him. You’re so lovely, in the night.

He does, same as anyone. But it’s funny - did you know that he feels it there too? He’s never been able to explain it. His skin, his soul, anchored to a single square foot of earth where in his mind, his mate still stands - will always stand. For him the night is eternal, and so too are you. A shadow in the moonlight, the blessed eclipse.
Before you, there hadn’t been much.
Not much of him, not much happening to him either. Alone in the garden of Eden, heaped in paradise and nothing to do. A lonely, lonely man, sliced open and abandoned by an Eve who kicked and thrashed her way free of his ribs until he lay shattered among the flowers. Blood soaks deep into the dirt, and Eden hides its face in shame.
Snakes and trees and the beauty of the forever sun. It’s a bore, peace by the absence of passion. He holds his crumbling flesh together and he can almost believe that it’s stone, unchanging and impervious, until the silver moon reaches down to find him and the sweetness of a new life bursts on his tongue. Melting, breathing, learning how to tread water. The quiet shade of a beautiful tree, jade leaves and tender branches, and something catches his eye.
Books be damned. You, the answer to his prayers, the apple that bit back, and he’s forever in your gentle grasp. What is magic, if it isn’t whatever he has with you? All creation is nothing to the wolf Sam Collins loves, who loves him back in equal measure. Heaven is nothing, when it’s midday in the polar night.
The moment passes, and he realises that he’s forgotten to turn the oven on. Are these the sorts of things you’re meant to think about, doing the washing up? He’s not sure, but since when has he ever cared about what he’s meant to do? The clock over the door ticks on, and he’s got the love of his life coming back to him in just under an hour. Better get to work.
People in love stories don’t tend to know they’re in a love story. Silver and sweetness and one breath after another. What a stroke of luck, then, that the two of you have always liked to bend the rules.

Gotham Knights ep 1.05. This series keeps getting stronger and stronger.
Harvey Dent being an angsty beefcake caught in a dark, noirish thriller is immensely enjoyable. Also the scene where Harvey talks about his father. Misha Collins is getting to unleash all the things that have made him such a fine, fine actor. His ability to open up raw, and show the empathy and pain and humanity, to share all that for a camera, for the audience, is so powerful.
The dynamics within the Gotham Knights kids are clicking more and more and I'm appreciating how there are varying shades of morality, priorities and goals within that group, while none of them are bad/evil. They also have gradations on how community oriented they are. Turner and Carrie and Cullen and Steph seem more conscious of the greater good, Harper is about looking after family, Duela is about looking after herself, yet isn't completely morally corrupt and she does care about others despite how she tries not to, but I think she'll be like Harper. Her softening will be for her friends, and her awareness of the good of the community taking longer to develop.
Carrie Kelley <333 Enjoying this look into how she balances her life. It would be a lot doing all that just while being Robin, now on top of it she's helping known fugitives and helping to take down a centuries old secret society that's had Gotham in a chokehold. And she is embodying the spirit of what Batman brought for Gotham--hope. She and Duela argue over the ethics of stealing the mob money, and Carrie rightfully points out it mob money was stolen from the people of Gotham who needed it. Then it was her idea to toss the Court of Owls money out of the back of the van as a distraction and to give something to the people in the Narrows. Maybe not the best method of distribution of wealth--the money's not going back to the specific people who were robbed. But it is going to people who live in the neighborhood. It's a form of justice. The mob and the court, both stepping on the city's neck.
The Row siblings. Cullen losing trust in Harper, and being so hurt she lied to him and kept things from him, only to find out the reason she kept things from him and took a mob job was to pay for his top surgery. Because she knew he'd say no, and refuse the money, if he knew the risk she was putting herself into.
Stephanie caring for her mom who is an addict. Heartwrenching to see Stephanie's sadness and what she's got on her shoulders. A different kind of balancing act than Carrie's. The facades both Stephanie and Carrie have to maintain to be the perfect child while they do what they need to do, and what they're both carrying. I noticed the book end mirrors--Carrie gets tucked in by her mom. Stephanie tucks in her mom who is passed out on the couch after drinking and doing pills.

Malevolent Episode 35 Ramble
The latest episode of Malevolent was great. I was pissing my pants the whole way through. Then Arthur talking smack to the Butcher made me nervous and scared that Collins was gonna snap and all hell would be unleashed but then he hits us with the "Good dog" Malevolent is not beating the allegations. What are we supposed to do with this information?
Anyways the entire confrontation with the Collins and Arthur was intense, yes, but they were literally having a stand-off in the public ward all the patients r just looking awkwardly at their sus tension-filled convo like uhm why is this sad British man telling this dude off like a dog /lh.
Also Oscar is a sweetheart (I cheered when he KOed Collins get him king <33) and Daniel and Arthur's relationship is healing which is really sweet! They called each other dad and son MAN.
AND THE MR.SCRATCH APPEARANCE IN THE BEGINNING? YES PLS Larson is gonna be soo mad <333
And we got a new character--Detective Noel! He seems neat (i was screaming at him to speed up during the fxcking ward scene).
It's great how Arthur managed to garner so many allies! But that also means he has more to lose <33 And JOHN IS LOSING HIS MEMORY R YOU OKAY JOHN

Least favourite: Dennis Collins/The Butcher. He's well written and a cool villain but I!! hate!! him!! (praying Lee doesn't see this, but I did the leitner rant with his name instead of Jurgen Leitner)
Character I'm most like: Hard to say with Malev, bc everyone is a little bit fucked up. Mayyyybe Oscar, because he's a priest who has potential to be a little bit fucked up (I'm a christian and a bit fucked up)
Favourite pairing: Private Eyes <333 (mostly as a qpr though)
Least favourite pairing: KiY/Arthur
Favourite moment: Either when John comes back in season 3, "I won't let you drown" or "and yet you love him". All of malev is so good it's hard to pick 🥺
Rating out of 10: 1000, normally I'm obsessed, but I watched Fionna and Cake today and regularly scheduled malev posting has been interrupted. (Sorry)

Unpopular Opinion: As fun and charming as "Engine of Love" is as Rusty's intro song (and as much as I ADORE the song after it, "This is Gonna Be The Day"), it feels a bit too confident, I guess? Not to say Rusty isn't confident, of course, but he has to grow that confidence over the course of the show. He's confident at the start, but not as confident as he is by the end. I think "Engine of Love" is more fitting for post-show Rusty. Maybe that's just me.

OKAY OKAY get ready for a lot of short stories about what I've been up to LOL:
Last night Jayson & I got into a fight when I got home after work, because we were supposed to go to the speedway today since they have a monster truck event, and he said not to bother buying him a ticket, since he doesn't want to go even though he knows how excited I am for it. So after our fight about it, I reach out to my friends that are going, and asked where they are sitting, so I can try and get a solo ticket near them. BUT by the time my friends answered, all the tickets were sold out, so I can't go :( Which made me yell at Jayson more lol. I went to the casino to watch Tyler's band play, and hung out with his step-son, Gage, for a while. My friends invited me over to play on their bouncy castle, which I might do tonight after Jayson & I get back from seeing Barbie.
The day before that, so my bday, I didn't do much lol. I napped for most of the day, and only worked like 3 hours max haha. After work, I went to my parents and had dinner with them, and then we went out for ice cream & tried a new ice cream place. It was very yummy. The ice cream place also sells banana milkshakes, which is rare, so I texted Collin to tell him (since he loves banana milkshakes), and then texted Tyler to let him know they have tiger tail ice cream (as that is also somewhat difficult to find). My parents bought me The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Oathbringer, which are two books I very much wanted :3 I immediately started Oathbringer lol. Then I came home & fought with Jayson and then felt sad for the rest of the night.
The day before that, so Wednesday, after work I went to Dan & Ally's, as Ally & Mik had a "surprise" planned for me for my birthday. The surprise was decorating the house, as you can see (at least a bit) in my pinned photos. We drank all night long, and did some shrooms, and I got way too drunk lol. I guess Isaac wanted to tattoo "23" on me (which given his 19 tattoo... makes sense), but didn't, for whatever reason. I do not remember any of that though LOL. I didn't fall asleep until like 4am.
Tuesday was a peaceful night. Bought some joints, and went for a walk at sunset to have a smoke. Ended up swinging on a swing set for way too long, it was so much fun omg. I highly recommend!
Monday night I went over to Tyler's after work, and we hung out in his "man cave", trying to find one of those silly hotdog/weiner cooker things to buy. We watched some food show too that he likes, and he was telling me about how he wants to open up a place that only sells philly cheesesteaks (and was quite shocked to hear that I had never tried one). When I got back, I was mad at Jayson again, because he didn't bother asking where I was or why i was out for so long or who I was with.
Last Sunday, Jayson & I went to the beach for the day, and I got very very drunk - I did not realize how much drunker you get in the sun lol. We have a beach tent, so I laid in that for most of the day, as the beach was semi-flooded so the sand was more mud than anything & the water was very cold. I also burnt half of my body (the half that was not quite in the tent). Jayson & I picked up chinese food on the way back in, and then I drunkenly (or exhausted from the heat) passed out on his bed for a couple hours LOL.
And Last Saturday, I impulsively drove almost 2 hours away to go to a bar that Tyler was playing at, and stayed until he left (so like 3am). Drove back in an awful storm, the highway was flooded, and the lightning was literally blinding. Very scary drive, but made it home safe (and so did he). And I had fun! Some boys hit on me at the bar, which was really funny to me. The one was like "come here often?" and i was like "I cannot believe you are trying that line on me". I told him no, through laughter, and that I came to support the band, as I work with the drummer. And his whole attitude changed, which was equally funny to me. He was like "Omg you know the band?! Can you ask them to play more Tragically Hip next time?! Please please please!?! I'll owe you my life!!!" Very funny!
And yea! That's been my week! Tonight we have to start watching Cleo, Jayson's step mom's cat, for the week while his parents are at their cottage. And we are going out for dinner & to see Barbie, like I think I already said.
