I recognize that this is probably a “chicken and the egg” question, but do you have any theories/head canon/actual knowledge of how the Ancient Greeks believed that nymphs were born?
I know that in the Percy Jackson series and later books the satyrs, dryads (and possibly naiads) can reincarnate…but how do they form initially?
Well, Nymphs is honestly a broad category of female deities, generally a more- minor class of deity. Small areas of influence and domain.
There's the Okeanides (daughters of Okeanos) who presided over fresh-water and the like. They include a large variety of nymphs, such as Naiades, Nephelai, Aurai, Dryades, Epimelides, and Leimonides. In modern day they're also considered ocean deities.
There's also the Hamadryades, which are typically connected to a very important tree in a grove, sometimes also Naiades of springs too.
There's also the Meliae (which classify as Oreiades and Melissai on top of Hamadryades and Naiads).
Plus the Anthousai, Hesperaies, Asteriai, Haliai, Nereides, Lampades, Mainades, and Nymphai.
Some of the fresh water nymphs are also further classified by Homer, such as Pegai, Krenai, and Potamoi, which became known collectively as Naiades.
Uh- got off point- the point is a large collection of them are simply born much like any other God. Some Nymphs are children of Titans like Atlas and Okeanos, others Gods like Nereus and Boreas, and some have an uncertain origin.
But they're born like any other.

I’m thinking of writing a fic (not PJO, and whatever religion the characters have probably wouldn’t play any sort of role [mostly because I’ve got no idea what they might believe in] so they’re essentially agnostic for all intents and purposes), and I was wondering if it would be considered disrespectful to use a God’s name for a character? I know several members of the Black family are named after constellations and prominent figures in mythology, but is it okay to use a God’s name for someone?
I mean- that depends on one's view? Imo yeah it's fine, especially if it's a derivative rather than 1 to 1 (like Herakles or Apollodonius vs Hera or Apollo(n), etc). I know several consider it wrong to name yourself after a God (like if you do a name change) but consider it find to name your kid after a God (because naming your kid is bringing to mind the Gods for your kid, naming yourself is saying you're like the Gods)
Basically, most will say it's fine. And it's fiction anyways, so have fun.

I have polls now and I've been curious since the Livestream feature came in–do any of these interest helpol Tumblr ? :0 I often do these things for the Theoi but have a very bad time remembering to document my process etc. so, if i streamed any of these options, would you be interested ? :) I'm private about my face, but talking with the community would be so fun !
Option 4: *sacred spaces—im a college student with a LOT of homework. there's many chunks of hours where I can't be distracted by my phone. I had the idea of setting up a small space for Deities and lighting candles & incense, saying some prayers, and then having uninterrupted soft music on stream. this way, people who wish to can "give offerings" in chat or use the stream as a portable/closet shrine ?
I don't think that you need a shrine to worship, but I think that coming together and praying over the same flame/sacred space may be pleasant. Helpol was a communal religion, and I thought this may be a nice modern adaptation.
please please drop any advice, ideas, or critiques !! :))

im currently a revival hellenic, though i am looking into recon for the future. so, either (or both!) works!
-anon looking for queer helpol resources :)
Welcome back, anon. So, let's get down to business!
As always, my number one recommendation is theoi.com. It's focused on translations of myths, hymns, and so forth and separated by deity. In there, you can find stories like that of Iphis & Ianthe, the dual-gendered deity Hermaphroditos, and information about male loves of Zeus and Poseidon, among many, many others. Lots of information to look over. I adore this website, frankly.
The second place I'm gonna recommend is the queer section of @jasper-grimoire, which has been lovingly compiled by myself. You can search "section: hellenism" within those pages to be brought specifically to Hellenism-based queer posts. I'll compile some bits at the end of this answer.
Thirdly, I'm going to recommend the book Queer Magic by Tomas Prower. It goes into queer history and mythology by putting a magnifying glass over the time periods the author examines. While some sections are more questionable in legitimacy than others, there are in-text citations and even some spots about specific deities. The Greek and Roman section specifically talks about Apollo, Athena/Minerva, Baubo and Iambe, and Iphis. There's also a fascinating section about Plato's Symposium that's worth a quick read.
Finally, I'm going to recommend reading a bunch (and I do mean A BUNCH) of scholarly articles on queer folks in ancient Greece. I signed up for an Academia.edu account just so I could read people's research. Remember that these are written by people, just like theoi.com and Queer Magic and all of the posts in my queer section, so don't take any one person's paper as infallible.
Posts of note from my online grimoire (historical substance may vary):
Deities, Saints, Crystals, and Herbs For All Your Gay Magic Needs
Transgender Witchery
Gay & MLM Correspondences
Lesbian & WLW Correspondences
Gender and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture Excerpt
Gender-Neutral and Non-Sexual Ways to Worship Aphrodite
Me talking about Athena from a nonbinary perspective
An excerpt from Artemis by Stephanie Budin about Athena
Aphroditos
An analysis of why people perceive Artemis as a lesbian and what her status as a virgin goddess meant in Ancient Greece
Ares, God of Feminism
Leto as the patron of trans people
Artemis belongs to no one
I hope this helps, anon! Feel free to come chat if you'd like to get my personal practice's perspective on something!

Welcome!
I’ve seen other blogs post these little introductions so I thought I’d do the same.
🕊 Aurelia 🍇 30 🍇 she/they 🕊
Worshipper of Aphrodite, Apollo, Dionysus, and Ariadne
Last updated April 2 2023
Tumblr media
I’ve been pagan for the past ten-odd years and have worshipped a variety of deities from different pantheons over the years but I always was drawn back to Greece and the Theoi and I finally feel like I’m in a good place where I can properly worship them. I realized that Aphrodite has been part of my life since I was little and I’ve been slowly recognizing the other gods making themselves known as well so I felt it was only right to make a specific place dedicated to them.
I dabble in both mythology and history as hobbies so there may be some overlap between that and the other helpol-specific content here, idk how things are gonna go on this blog yet
I’m still getting my footing in Hellenic polytheism so I don’t feel confident answering questions but feel free chat with me! I do have adhd and social anxiety so I can get easily overwhelmed talking with new people and forget to respond to messages but I promise I’ll do my best to maintain correspondence.
Posts are tagged with their respective deity to the best of my ability. Any UPG will be tagged accordingly, along with resources/information. I’ll also update this post accordingly as I grow and change within my practice.
This blog is an inclusive space, if you take issue with that you can fuck right off.

Hermes?? Hermes rambles? Knowledge abt Hermes rambles pls? Love the rambles and wanna know more about Hermes please when ya have the time? <3
Hermes! Okay so Hermes. I’ve got some fun talk about him from off the top of my head, and also some stuff from some very very interesting papers I just saved on him <3
So Hermes, did you know that he is nearly as good as Apollo at stealing other Gods domains? He and Apollo have often switched domains in the past, making his first act upon birth really shine in stealing from Apollo lol. He and Apollo are very close, historically have been so!
Hermes is the God of Thieves and of Merchants, which is super interesting to think about imo because like- he patrons both those stealing from Merchants and the Merchants themselves. Both would pray to him for their work, though one might think Merchants in part do because often Merchants would travel. Of course, you could argue whoever gained his favor the most in prayer would be the one to succeed that day, but it could also be based upon what the Merchant or Thief did with their goods, what treatment they had given people, or more.
In the modern day I associate Hermes more with Cars and Trains and Buses than other methods of travel, though he would also be related to biking, walking, running, and more. But as I drive most places and struggle to walk due to health, Cars are my association. In the Ancient Times he would be associated with horse travel, walking, running, carriages, and similar such methods of travel. Really, any way you can travel on land falls under Hermes, he was the God of the Common Man and of the Rich, in travel, in Wealth, and in Poverty. Frankly the only reason I don’t associate planes with him is because you enter the realm of Zeus then, but even Hermes flits from place to place upon his winged sandals, and that alone would grant leave for planes to be within his purview.
It makes him very approachable. He was even associated with Hestia, due to the nature of the Hearth being the place that travelers would be welcome, the place supplicants would make their plea. The Hearth and the Travelers were intertwined in this way, the center of refuge and worship, of home and welcoming guests. In fact, there was even a marking placed in front of most houses, for Hermes, a statue or otherwise.
Now then, I was reading an article on Hermes, specifically about him being a Figure in Transition, because you see him being a messenger isn’t all that is he, nor is he simply bearing a message from one end to the next, that insults exactly what he is as a whole. He not only bears the message, he is the being that brings the news, the word, the communication, he brings word from Olympus to Earth, he brings the word of the King to his subjects, he conveys exactly what is needed, he is even able to pass freely into the underworld, associating himself with the mists of Erebos which most Gods refuse to even touch. He is not hampered by anything in his path, life, death, the heavens, the underworld, the sea or sky-
He is the messenger, but not only a messenger. For example, did you know that the “herms” in Ancient Greece are the marks of distance upon a map. He is the center of frontiers, up and down, forward and back- his position as a messenger makes him a traveler, and patron of them as well. These natures of his are intertwined. And in the manner that he goes from the Earth to the Underworld and back up to the Heavens, one could even argue he is facilitating the trade of souls, from living to dead and back to the living. And here one may associate him with Merchants, and by the nature of trade thieves are present, tying those natures of his together.
All of this together also showcases him as an agent of change, which is clearly seen in his myth of birth. He goes from born, to thief, to successful pardon, to creator of an instrument, to trader, to free. He changes rapidly, and brings change (by message, by travel, by intertwining worlds and by separating them) just as easily. He has brought change via bringing Zeus’ decrees of law and order, he has brought change with his mischief, he is a force of change.

Man not to start beef (not that I can, because I blocked that blog) but what is with that one particularly popular blog that keeps writing little skits about the gods chatting. Doesn't sound too bad on paper but they're all horrendously fandomizing the deities and just not good and borderline disrespectful. This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to gatekeep helpol.

Hiiiii! So I feel like Aphrodite wants to work with me but how do I ask for signs cos I asked and now I keep seeing Pearl imagery and things that are making me want to buy Pearl related things! X
Hiiii!! I’m so excited to hear you want to reach out to Aphrodite. I love Her so much!!
It seems whatever method you used might have worked since you see pearls everywhere now! If you want other signs and haven’t already used traditional methods, you can always try it this way!
I was taught a lovely acronym by a friend of mine that I think will be helpful!
A.S.K
A - Approach out of a genuine need
Ask yourself if you genuinely need another sign from Aphrodite, or you only want one for comfort? It’s understandable when dealing with things as grand as Gods that we would second-guess ourselves!
To me, seeing pearls soon after asking Aphrodite for a sign seems indicative of it being Her! But it’s up to you to decide.
S - Support your request with gifts
Once you’ve decided that you genuinely need a second sign from Aphrodite, you can go to Her and pray. If you’ve never prayed before, here's a quick rough guide on how I do it:
1) Cleanse your hands - you can just wash your hands or have a shower before praying! 2) Gather offerings - the easiest ones would be water or bread 3) Call out to Aphrodite - traditionally, you would say the Gods name (+ an epithet/s), but if you can’t speak for safety reasons, you can also:           - Type/write           - Paint/draw           - Mouth the words           - Whisper           - Any other tangible act you can think of 4) Pray! - I’ve done another ask about praying you can find here 5) Divination - If you wanted to while you - maybe - have Her attention, you can pull out your divination method of choice and have a chat! 6) Close up praying - Thank Aphrodite for Her time. Whether or not you felt Her doesn’t matter!
K - Keep your request reasonable
When praying, you need to keep in mind your limits. These limits are probably the kharis you’ve built with Aphrodite and the amount you know about Her and Her realms.
You build kharis with the Gods by consistently praying and giving them offerings, regardless of if you get anything in return. Hellenic Polytheism is reciprocal at its core. The Gods give us their realms and continued work, and we repay them with prayers and offerings!
It's also good to know what you mean when you say "working with Aphrodite". There have been recent discussions in the helpol/pagan community about working with or worshipping a deity. As well as a, frankly, stupid argument that it's not safe to worship pagan Gods.
I don't know much about working with, but asking for signs from a God is usually for worshipping! The Gods can help us without it being a "work" relationship!
